00:00:00
okay welcome back to my channel if it's
00:00:02
the first time you've seen me welcome to
00:00:05
youtube i have basically decided to put
00:00:07
this video together because i've had
00:00:09
lots of people reach out to me on
00:00:10
instagram asking me about moving over
00:00:13
can they move with their girlfriend can
00:00:14
they move with their boyfriend what is
00:00:16
it like is there stuff to do so i just
00:00:18
wanted to basically create a series
00:00:19
whereby i give you the information
00:00:22
around what it is like to live here so
00:00:25
actually today funnily enough it has
00:00:27
been my two year anniversary
00:00:30
of living in saudi arabia i came over
00:00:32
here and when was it 10th of september
00:00:36
2019 so i've been here throughout
00:00:39
through the whole of corona didn't leave
00:00:42
didn't go back to london so so i'd like
00:00:44
to say i'm i'm settled in i've got my
00:00:47
own apartment my car my girlfriend too
00:00:50
so life is very good and i just want to
00:00:53
share
00:00:53
with you what it is like out here
00:00:55
because honestly if you come out here
00:00:57
for work or even a holiday then you will
00:01:00
not regret it i don't regret a decision
00:01:03
i've made coming out here not for a
00:01:04
second and then just to give you a bit
00:01:06
more information about me
00:01:08
i as i said i've been here for two years
00:01:10
i am a personal trainer here i upped and
00:01:12
left london
00:01:14
uh left the nine to five the hustle the
00:01:16
commute uh and yeah decided to just try
00:01:20
something new in a new country a totally
00:01:23
different country and i must say i'm
00:01:26
loving every minute of it so
00:01:28
what i'm gonna do in this video is talk
00:01:30
around
00:01:32
you know what it is like here questions
00:01:34
that i get asked a lot in terms of
00:01:36
where is good to live compounds
00:01:38
apartments flats and generally what the
00:01:41
area is like so i hope you find it
00:01:43
useful so for me i'm quite lucky because
00:01:45
i live with my girlfriend and it looks
00:01:47
like ikea has vomited all over our
00:01:49
apartment as you can see it's quite
00:01:51
messy
00:01:53
but this is what it's like on the inside
00:01:55
we're more of the lucky ones whereby
00:01:58
we're in a big residential compound i
00:02:01
mean there's no kids here at the moment
00:02:03
but they are a nightmare
00:02:06
and generally
00:02:07
it's it's a nice place to live and and
00:02:10
one of the first questions i get asked
00:02:11
is around compounds basically so in the
00:02:14
middle east especially saudi compounds
00:02:17
are areas
00:02:18
where people expat specifically live
00:02:21
really
00:02:22
you know they're not necessarily
00:02:23
essential anymore particularly in saudi
00:02:26
so over the last couple years things
00:02:28
have really opened up here and so you
00:02:30
know if you're a foreigner or an expat
00:02:32
you can really live live anywhere but
00:02:35
the reason why compounds are popular and
00:02:37
they carry a price tag um is that
00:02:40
they are places communities sort of
00:02:43
closed off um secure you get various
00:02:46
different types you get some which are
00:02:48
you know 10 20
00:02:50
apartments or villas
00:02:52
and then you get some of the others
00:02:53
which are more of the village type
00:02:55
compounds whereby
00:02:57
you know they're up to 200 300
00:03:00
apartments or villas and those really
00:03:02
are the ones where it's kind of like a
00:03:06
sort of five-star holiday resort in a
00:03:08
way you've got you know you've got kids
00:03:10
clubs you've got all sorts of gyms and
00:03:12
pools and facilities restaurants and
00:03:14
everything but
00:03:16
you know from my experience here in
00:03:17
jeddah is that you don't actually need
00:03:20
to live in a compound um so as i showed
00:03:23
you earlier my place is is a residential
00:03:26
complex so it's open to saudis as well
00:03:28
but it's open you know they still vet
00:03:31
people who who apply here so that you
00:03:34
don't get people who are going to cause
00:03:35
trouble uh and it's generally a nice
00:03:37
place to live besides all the kids
00:03:39
so i would suggest depending on
00:03:42
obviously what you like
00:03:44
go for compounds which are a bit smaller
00:03:46
not necessarily the village type
00:03:49
compound so the smaller compounds
00:03:51
essentially you know
00:03:53
it's a smaller community but they tend
00:03:56
to be much much much more modern so
00:03:58
similar to what mine is like here you
00:04:00
know it's white walls feels new um well
00:04:04
it's kind of new whereas the older
00:04:06
village types are sort of 20 30 years
00:04:09
old and they are warm they are raggedy
00:04:12
they're dark
00:04:13
and they're not that nice but you know
00:04:16
there are a couple options whereby you
00:04:19
can really focus on the sort of
00:04:22
you know facilities and have an awesome
00:04:24
gym awesome swimming pool and that kind
00:04:26
of stuff examples of some of the village
00:04:29
compounds are shabatly and then also our
00:04:32
basatine village compound so these are
00:04:35
huge they're like 200 300
00:04:38
apartments or villas and as you can see
00:04:40
from this map which i'm gonna put in
00:04:42
just here um they're massive they're
00:04:45
massive so they're nice um they come
00:04:48
with a price tag and they are very
00:04:51
children friendly so you know they have
00:04:53
everything you need in there but now
00:04:55
that i would say jeddah the community
00:04:57
everything here is opening up a lot more
00:05:00
you know you don't necessarily need
00:05:02
everything at home whereas in previous
00:05:04
years you did because there was just
00:05:06
literally nothing to do outside then
00:05:08
you've also got some of the smaller
00:05:10
compounds much more modern uh which
00:05:12
again as you'll put in here if i can
00:05:13
work this well um like sukina compound
00:05:17
uh and a couple of the others can't
00:05:19
remember the names of the top of my head
00:05:20
but i will include them um these are
00:05:22
much
00:05:23
well to be honest much nicer
00:05:26
putting it frankly uh maybe i'm a bit of
00:05:28
a snob uh but no you know they're
00:05:30
they're just finished nicely they're new
00:05:33
they're modern and you don't necessarily
00:05:35
have that kind of
00:05:37
dark wood finishing beige from just you
00:05:41
know
00:05:42
people living in it for for years and
00:05:45
years and years so they're definitely
00:05:47
worth a look at
00:05:49
and you know they're in some of the
00:05:50
areas whereby
00:05:52
they're more developing so there's going
00:05:54
to be a lot more coffee shops and
00:05:56
restaurants and all those sorts of
00:05:57
places but i think now what i'm going to
00:05:59
do is i'm going to walk outside for a
00:06:01
bit and then show you
00:06:03
kind of what it's like here so i've
00:06:05
taken you up to the top of my compound
00:06:08
and this is the view absolutely lovely
00:06:12
right so
00:06:13
we have lots of building going on over
00:06:16
here because jetta is developing and it
00:06:18
is
00:06:19
basically one big building site you've
00:06:20
got a big cityscape over there
00:06:23
and around here so that might give you a
00:06:25
bit of an oversight as to what
00:06:29
is around me jedda's developing there's
00:06:31
a lot of new malls a lot of new
00:06:33
restaurants all that kind of stuff
00:06:35
apartments compounds everything so
00:06:37
give it a few years and it is going to
00:06:39
be
00:06:40
a whole different place
00:06:44
what was it two minutes outside
00:06:47
i am very sweaty so this is going to be
00:06:49
you're going to get a first-hand
00:06:50
experience as to what jeddah humidity is
00:06:54
like
00:06:55
so that there you can see
00:06:56
my compound in the background well i say
00:06:59
compound it's more of a apartment
00:07:00
complex type thing and now i'm just
00:07:03
going to take you on a trip through the
00:07:05
local area so you can kind of see what
00:07:07
the vibe is like for people living here
00:07:11
and as you can probably see i'm sweating
00:07:12
profusely already
00:07:15
because there's not really any pavements
00:07:16
in this place i mean
00:07:18
you know this is one of the back end
00:07:19
roads but
00:07:21
generally speaking
00:07:23
nobody walks here because look
00:07:25
it's way too warm
00:07:28
and you're gonna get hit by a car
00:07:29
realistically everything is pretty much
00:07:31
behind closed doors um i imagine the
00:07:34
reason for that is
00:07:36
obviously saudi's come from a very
00:07:38
restricted past and still is in some
00:07:40
ways people want to be able to do what
00:07:42
they want to be able to do in the in the
00:07:44
privacy of their own home which
00:07:47
is essentially where compounds came from
00:07:49
so you know people
00:07:51
wanted that privacy wanted to be around
00:07:53
people who were similar to them
00:07:55
and weren't going to get in trouble for
00:07:56
doing certain things and behaviors for
00:07:58
whatever those might be i think one of
00:08:00
the things that gets people when they
00:08:02
look at my stories and when i send their
00:08:05
pictures and everything of where i am is
00:08:08
obviously it's very very very culturally
00:08:10
different to somewhere like london and
00:08:13
so
00:08:14
that often
00:08:16
makes people a bit well people are
00:08:18
afraid of different right
00:08:20
so they couldn't imagine themselves
00:08:21
living here they couldn't sort of
00:08:23
well they think it would be like the
00:08:25
worst place to know
00:08:26
but actually
00:08:28
i love it i love different
00:08:30
culture everything i think once people
00:08:32
get over that
00:08:34
then you know they can actually start
00:08:35
living and exploring experiencing
00:08:37
different things not just what they're
00:08:38
necessarily used to
00:08:46
[Music]
00:08:56
so as you might have guessed
00:08:59
stray cats are everywhere it's
00:09:02
kind of sad
00:09:03
but
00:09:04
i guess they're the uh they're the
00:09:06
pigeons
00:09:07
of uh of saudi i mean
00:09:09
always on the road as roadkill
00:09:12
it's very sad see it's getting quite
00:09:15
warm now i mean it's always warm
00:09:17
uh just sweating even more so you
00:09:19
probably would have seen
00:09:21
you know some places which you thought
00:09:23
looked a bit
00:09:24
00:09:25
some places which you thought were a bit
00:09:26
nice like this here is one of the big
00:09:28
international schools like anywhere you
00:09:31
get parts of town which are lovely rich
00:09:34
people you get parts which aren't
00:09:36
necessarily as nice which unfortunately
00:09:38
just you know tend to have more poor
00:09:40
people in them so in terms of
00:09:42
location and and what to expect when you
00:09:45
come here is it is very
00:09:47
you know diverse in some ways there is
00:09:49
definitely the gap between the rich and
00:09:51
the poor unfortunately that line is
00:09:54
is often blurred quite a lot because
00:09:56
everything happens behind closed doors
00:09:58
so you know you've got gates gated
00:10:01
houses gated village gated compounds so
00:10:04
you know location
00:10:06
doesn't really necessarily matter all
00:10:08
that much because you do have um sort of
00:10:10
security and protection around and
00:10:13
on top of that actually the crime rate
00:10:15
here is pretty much zero from what i've
00:10:18
seen in my two years here i haven't
00:10:20
heard of anything
00:10:22
nothing bad in terms of
00:10:24
of crime but then again that might just
00:10:25
be the circle that i'm fortunately in
00:10:28
and we are back home
00:10:31
no yes the kids are out
00:10:34
you see this is why no one goes walking
00:10:38
in jeddah because you just end up like
00:10:40
this after 10 minutes i hope that has
00:10:42
been some sort of enlightening if not
00:10:46
or if you do want to know more actually
00:10:48
please do
00:10:49
please do just get in touch um i'll be
00:10:52
more than happy to help with any
00:10:53
questions if anything has put you off
00:10:56
please don't let it as this wasn't
00:10:57
really an accurate representation of
00:10:59
what
00:11:00
life in jeddah is really like it's just
00:11:03
a bit of me blabbing on about and i
00:11:06
hope some of it
00:11:07
is useful and thank you once again for
00:11:10
watching my videos if you haven't
00:11:12
already please watch the adventure
00:11:14
videos on my channel uh there's all
00:11:17
sorts in there showing you that saudi is
00:11:19
actually a pretty incredible place lots
00:11:22
of incredible stuff to do so if you
00:11:24
haven't already subscribe now and i
00:11:26
shall see you next round
