    - So I have been using this M1 Max MacBook Pro
  • 00:00:08
for the past three years since it came out,
  • 00:00:10
    and it's been great.
  • 00:00:12
I have felt absolutely no compulsion to upgrade since,
  • 00:00:17
    haven't needed to.
  • 00:00:18
It's funny, most of my work is pretty light,
  • 00:00:20
but occasionally I will have to edit a video on the go,
  • 00:00:24
which is then when, you know, the extra horsepower
  • 00:00:26
and the screen and everything about this comes in handy,
  • 00:00:29
    and it's great.
  • 00:00:30
If I didn't have to do that ever,
  • 00:00:31
I would just have, like, an Air or a Surface Laptop,
  • 00:00:34
    something like that.
  • 00:00:35
But that range of work is why this has been great for me,
  • 00:00:38
and it's been awesome so far.
  • 00:00:40
    (light groovy electronic music)
  • 00:00:47
So along comes this M4 generation of MacBook Pros,
  • 00:00:52
    and it's the first generation
  • 00:00:53
that I have actually been tempted to maybe upgrade to.
  • 00:00:57
You know, they've stacked a couple
  • 00:00:58
of the right upgrades in the right places
  • 00:01:00
for things that actually make a difference to me.
  • 00:01:03
So let's just get right into it. Nuts and bolts.
  • 00:01:05
'Cause the first big pillar is performance.
  • 00:01:07
And the main reason why this new laptop matters at all
  • 00:01:10
is that it's got the new generation of M4 chips inside.
  • 00:01:13
And we all know the leap from Intel chips
  • 00:01:15
to Apple silicon chips for M1 was generational.
  • 00:01:18
But since then, it's been a sort of more reasonable
  • 00:01:21
incremental upgrade, going from M1 to M2, then M3,
  • 00:01:26
    and then M4.
  • 00:01:27
So I think it's pretty obvious that nobody with an M2
  • 00:01:28
    or M3 needs to upgrade,
  • 00:01:30
but there have been enough improvements now
  • 00:01:32
stacking up upon each other from M1 to M4
  • 00:01:36
    that the numbers are now
  • 00:01:37
starting to get kind of interesting.
  • 00:01:39
So just to set the stage, this laptop that I've been using
  • 00:01:41
is the M1 Max maxed out.
  • 00:01:44
Basically, the best you could get at the time.
  • 00:01:45
64 gigs of unified memory on this system.
  • 00:01:48
And this unit I've been testing of the M4 Max
  • 00:01:52
    is also maxed out.
  • 00:01:53
    It's the best you can get now;
  • 00:01:59
faster, stronger on the new one:
  • 00:02:01
    Three nanometers versus five,
  • 00:02:03
    546 gigs per second
  • 00:02:06
    of memory bandwidth versus 400.
  • 00:02:10
Just the hardware improvements to get to M4 Max
  • 00:02:12
    are clearly there.
  • 00:02:13
So, to keep the apples-to-apples comparison going,
  • 00:02:15
    Apple, in their own presentation,
  • 00:02:17
said up to 2.2 times faster CPU performance than M1 Max
  • 00:02:21
and 1.9 times faster GPU performance.
  • 00:02:25
So we're looking at around twice as fast,
  • 00:02:28
and the synthetic benchmarks I've run back this up.
  • 00:02:31
I got over 4,000 in Geekbench 6 CPU single core,
  • 00:02:36
which is the highest single core score ever in a Mac
  • 00:02:39
    by a while.
  • 00:02:40
And the multi-core score was incredible, too.
  • 00:02:43
    Tops the chart.
  • 00:02:44
And then, GPU has improved a lot
  • 00:02:46
to the point where it's bumping up against M2 Ultra.
  • 00:02:49
Not M2 Max, M2 Ultra chips,
  • 00:02:52
the one that's currently in the Mac Pro.
  • 00:02:53
So it's pretty clear that on paper,
  • 00:02:55
yeah, these M4 chips are blazing; they're incredible.
  • 00:03:00
    But that's just on paper.
  • 00:03:01
    What about in real life?
  • 00:03:02
    What about real workflow stuff?
  • 00:03:04
So, on YouTube, you might have noticed
  • 00:03:06
a lot of the benchmarking and real-world stuff that you see
  • 00:03:10
    is video editing benchmarks,
  • 00:03:12
just because that's the most intensive thing
  • 00:03:13
most YouTubers do on their computers.
  • 00:03:15
It's the most intensive thing I do.
  • 00:03:18
But yeah, that's what's gonna drive my purchase decision,
  • 00:03:21
so that's the first thing I looked into.
  • 00:03:23
So my own benchmark is literally loading up
  • 00:03:25
a video project in Final Cut Pro,
  • 00:03:27
moving things around, messing with clips, cutting, effects,
  • 00:03:30
tracking, and then, of course, export times.
  • 00:03:33
This project here is a mix of 8K RED raw footage
  • 00:03:37
and action camera footage with comped graphics
  • 00:03:39
and smaller video files from the Snapchat glasses.
  • 00:03:43
And not only did this laptop open and flip through Final Cut
  • 00:03:46
faster than any other machine I've ever used,
  • 00:03:48
but it also exported the final video roughly twice as fast
  • 00:03:52
    as my M1 Max laptop,
  • 00:03:54
which is really exciting for me. (chuckles)
  • 00:03:56
    So a pretty prime example
  • 00:03:57
of the performance unlocking something new
  • 00:04:00
is Final Cut Pro 11 just came out,
  • 00:04:02
and I've been messing with it for a little bit,
  • 00:04:03
and there's a new headlining feature called Magnetic Mask.
  • 00:04:07
And my theory is that it's taking
  • 00:04:09
pretty heavy advantage of Apple silicon,
  • 00:04:10
specifically the neural engine, 'cause it's "AI-powered,"
  • 00:04:13
but I had to prove it. So previously, to cut a subject
  • 00:04:15
out of a background in a video,
  • 00:04:17
it was this painstaking process called rotoscoping,
  • 00:04:20
where you're essentially manually drawing the mask
  • 00:04:22
    for every single frame.
  • 00:04:24
Now, this one works even better than some plugins I've used,
  • 00:04:28
like mRotoAI, and it's even faster.
  • 00:04:30
Basically, all you do is click the subject
  • 00:04:32
and sort of refine your selection,
  • 00:04:34
and then once you're good to go,
  • 00:04:35
you just analyze forward for the entire clip
  • 00:04:39
and just let it do its thing,
  • 00:04:40
and it just continues for the whole clip.
  • 00:04:41
So, I ran through this on the M4 Max.
  • 00:04:43
I ran through this on the M1 Max,
  • 00:04:44
but I did some other machines as well.
  • 00:04:45
And the results, well, the M1 Max was able to pull this off
  • 00:04:49
    in two minutes, 56 seconds.
  • 00:04:51
The M4 Max got it down to two minutes and 13 seconds.
  • 00:04:55
But then M2 Ultra got it down to a minute and a half.
  • 00:04:58
But then the Intel Xeon Mac Pro,
  • 00:05:00
super expensive with the dual Radeon Pro GPUs,
  • 00:05:04
took six minutes for the same 45-second clip here.
  • 00:05:07
So, the leap is crazy, and it just keeps getting better.
  • 00:05:09
I'm thinking M4 Ultra is gonna be, as a video editor,
  • 00:05:15
    pretty sick.
  • 00:05:15
    But of course, you might not be a video editor;
  • 00:05:18
you might be something else; you might be a photographer.
  • 00:05:20
I just watched Tyler Stalman's video on his M4 Max laptop.
  • 00:05:24
    It's really good.
  • 00:05:25
The second half of his video, he does a lot of testing
  • 00:05:27
against the M1 generation with Lightroom and Resolve,
  • 00:05:30
and not only does it continue to crush M1 Max,
  • 00:05:34
but sometimes it actually gets close to
  • 00:05:35
or it beats the newest Mac Studio with M2 Ultra,
  • 00:05:39
    which is pretty insane.
  • 00:05:40
So I'll link his whole video below; it's really good.
  • 00:05:42
Now, obviously, we expect Mac Studio and Mac Pro
  • 00:05:46
to eventually get their own M4 generation updates
  • 00:05:49
    with the M4 Ultra chip.
  • 00:05:50
    I'm sure that'll be immense.
  • 00:05:52
But even so, with this, it's crazy to see Apple silicon
  • 00:05:55
is still improving fast enough that this new laptop chip
  • 00:05:59
is outperforming some of the desktop chips
  • 00:06:03
from earlier years of Apple silicon.
  • 00:06:05
There's a bunch of other real-world benchmarks out there.
  • 00:06:07
I'll link some more below that are really good.
  • 00:06:08
But I think the bottom line from my testing
  • 00:06:11
and from other tests that I've watched and read
  • 00:06:13
is, yeah, there is now a significant bump up in performance
  • 00:06:18
    from M1 to M4.
  • 00:06:19
Not just 30 or 40%, but, like, 200%, which is pretty crazy.
  • 00:06:23
    But that by itself
  • 00:06:25
might not be enough to convince you to upgrade,
  • 00:06:28
    so there's more.
  • 00:06:29
    Luckily, several other things
  • 00:06:30
are updated about this laptop as well.
  • 00:06:32
So, first of all, this laptop is Space Black,
  • 00:06:35
    as you may have noticed,
  • 00:06:35
which the M1 generation didn't have,
  • 00:06:37
    but it's not exactly new.
  • 00:06:38
It's actually had the same two colors as M3,
  • 00:06:42
    Space Black or silver.
  • 00:06:44
I do love me some Space Black,
  • 00:06:45
but anyone who has one already knows
  • 00:06:48
    it looks really good new,
  • 00:06:49
but then (sighs) it kind of collects fingerprints
  • 00:06:52
and starts to wear over time.
  • 00:06:54
Still, the best solution I found is a skin over a case,
  • 00:06:57
just as that little bit of scratch protection,
  • 00:06:59
and you'll never see fingerprints again.
  • 00:07:01
    So I'll leave a link below to channel-sponsored dbrand's
  • 00:07:03
Glitch skin if you wanna check that out.
  • 00:07:05
It's much more interesting than black or silver.
  • 00:07:07
But there is another visual improvement here too,
  • 00:07:09
and you've probably noticed it watching this video.
  • 00:07:12
    It looks so good.
  • 00:07:13
That is the nano-texture display option.
  • 00:07:16
It is new, and I love it.
  • 00:07:18
    It's incredible.
  • 00:07:19
And the thing is, I have slight reservations
  • 00:07:22
about how it might wear over time,
  • 00:07:26
but on a laptop like this, it just looks so good.
  • 00:07:29
    Nano-texture started out as a $1,000 option
  • 00:07:33
    on the Pro Display XDR,
  • 00:07:35
and this is the hardest one to recommend.
  • 00:07:36
    Like, it's stupid expensive,
  • 00:07:37
and then it's also so delicate to maintain.
  • 00:07:41
It just picked up fingerprints so easily.
  • 00:07:44
You'd have to have the right low-pile soft microfiber
  • 00:07:46
    to actually clean it.
  • 00:07:47
    Like, it is tough.
  • 00:07:48
I wouldn't recommend it to most.
  • 00:07:50
But it seems like it improved since then
  • 00:07:53
because now it's a $300 option on the Studio Display
  • 00:07:56
that a lot of people have.
  • 00:07:58
Then they offered it as a $100 option on the iPad Pro,
  • 00:08:02
    which obviously that's something
  • 00:08:03
people are touching constantly with their fingers,
  • 00:08:05
and we haven't really seen too many issues with it.
  • 00:08:08
And so I think on a laptop like this, like, if it can be...
  • 00:08:11
    Geez.
  • 00:08:12
If it can be, like, maintenance pain-free,
  • 00:08:15
then it feels like a kind of no-brainer.
  • 00:08:17
Like, this is my favorite option on this laptop.
  • 00:08:20
Like, you're gonna take it all over the place
  • 00:08:21
in all sorts of different lighting,
  • 00:08:22
and just the way this matte finish just eats reflections
  • 00:08:26
and completely removes any lighting environment distractions
  • 00:08:30
from anything from an office building to a coffee shop
  • 00:08:33
to an airplane with a window next to you.
  • 00:08:35
    Like, it's actually incredible.
  • 00:08:37
    It's awesome.
  • 00:08:38
All laptops should have something like this.
  • 00:08:39
It's 100 bucks more than the glossy version
  • 00:08:41
for the MacBook Pro, and I'll take it every time.
  • 00:08:43
The fact that this is new to the M4 generation by itself,
  • 00:08:47
honestly, is very compelling to me.
  • 00:08:50
So then the only other big thing that's new here
  • 00:08:51
    is Thunderbolt 5, which is funny;
  • 00:08:54
it's kind of overrated and underrated at the same time.
  • 00:08:58
So the outgoing laptops all have perfectly great,
  • 00:09:00
very fast Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports.
  • 00:09:03
    Love that.
  • 00:09:03
Almost every new high-end laptop has that.
  • 00:09:06
These new ones here are getting Thunderbolt 5,
  • 00:09:08
which a lot of other machines don't have yet.
  • 00:09:11
And actually, the base 14-inch MacBook Pro
  • 00:09:13
gets one more port, too, which is great.
  • 00:09:15
So now they all have the three Thunderbolt 5 ports.
  • 00:09:17
It feels a bit underrated, maybe because it is so new
  • 00:09:20
and it's in so few laptops,
  • 00:09:21
but it is actually a genuine capability improvement.
  • 00:09:24
Like, we love more bandwidth, we love faster I/O.
  • 00:09:27
You can do three 6K displays from this laptop
  • 00:09:30
    instead of two.
  • 00:09:31
    So that's awesome.
  • 00:09:32
    But there are so few
  • 00:09:35
Thunderbolt 5 accessories out right now,
  • 00:09:37
and the ones that do start to come out
  • 00:09:39
you also notice are pretty expensive.
  • 00:09:40
So my favorite accessory in the world right now,
  • 00:09:42
for example, I think, is the Samsung X5,
  • 00:09:45
    the Thunderbolt 3 drive.
  • 00:09:46
    It's incredible.
  • 00:09:47
2,800 megabyte per second read speeds.
  • 00:09:49
    They don't sell them anymore,
  • 00:09:50
but you can get a nearly equivalent
  • 00:09:52
two-terabyte SanDisk drive for about 275 bucks, right?
  • 00:09:56
Then there's the new OWC Thunderbolt 5 drive,
  • 00:09:59
and it'll read and write at 6,000 megabytes per second.
  • 00:10:03
    Damn!
  • 00:10:04
But it's also two terabytes for 400 bucks.
  • 00:10:07
So, you know, as a video editor
  • 00:10:08
who's passing around really large files,
  • 00:10:10
like, I'm gonna want one of these at some point.
  • 00:10:12
I'm gonna wait for more options; it's gonna be great.
  • 00:10:14
But I think the point of Thunderbolt 5 on these computers
  • 00:10:17
is that ecosystem of Thunderbolt 5 accessories,
  • 00:10:20
    drives, docks, interfaces,
  • 00:10:22
that's gonna be built up over time.
  • 00:10:24
This is great for future-proofing the thing,
  • 00:10:25
but it doesn't actually affect most people right away.
  • 00:10:29
Unless you're literally gonna plug in
  • 00:10:30
three Pro Displays right off the bat.
  • 00:10:32
So then there's a couple of other little, smaller things.
  • 00:10:34
You know, the new Center Stage ultra-wide webcam
  • 00:10:37
    that will follow you around.
  • 00:10:38
I actually think it looks better, which is nice.
  • 00:10:41
The battery life is also rated to be slightly better,
  • 00:10:44
thanks to the M4's improved efficiency.
  • 00:10:46
So I think this is mostly gonna come into effect
  • 00:10:47
under lighter workloads, but you'd love to see it.
  • 00:10:49
Same size battery, better battery life.
  • 00:10:52
And then, the screen has a higher SDR max brightness
  • 00:10:55
of 1,000 nits over the previous; I think it was 500 or 600.
  • 00:10:58
So, if you're in a brighter space,
  • 00:11:00
whether you have nano-texture or not,
  • 00:11:02
    everything is more readable.
  • 00:11:03
And it turns out Apple quietly updated
  • 00:11:06
all these MacBook Pros to quantum dot displays
  • 00:11:09
    and didn't tell anybody. (chuckles)
  • 00:11:10
They're probably still on their way to OLED.
  • 00:11:12
But yeah, these improvements to quantum dot
  • 00:11:14
    and efficiency and especially responsiveness,
  • 00:11:17
it might just be confirmation bias,
  • 00:11:19
but I feel like the responsiveness
  • 00:11:20
is actually noticeable to my eye.
  • 00:11:22
    So you might not upgrade
  • 00:11:23
    just for the performance improvements,
  • 00:11:25
    but they are pretty good.
  • 00:11:27
You might not upgrade just for the new nano-texture finish,
  • 00:11:31
    but it is really good.
  • 00:11:33
And you definitely won't upgrade just for Thunderbolt 5
  • 00:11:36
or just for the slightly brighter display
  • 00:11:38
    or the ultra-wide webcam.
  • 00:11:40
But I think all of these things
  • 00:11:42
stacked on top of each other combined is...
  • 00:11:46
I think you actually can justify an upgrade this year.
  • 00:11:50
If you are regularly pushing this laptop to its limits,
  • 00:11:53
    you can justify this improvement,
  • 00:11:55
or at least that's what I'm telling myself. (laughs)
  • 00:11:57
M1 Max is gonna be perfectly fine for another year though,
  • 00:11:59
    no question about that.
  • 00:12:00
I also think it's really interesting that we basically have
  • 00:12:03
Apple Intelligence to thank for all of these new Macs
  • 00:12:06
basically having a new minimum of 16 gigs of unified memory.
  • 00:12:11
It just makes all of the base Macs
  • 00:12:12
feel like a better deal now.
  • 00:12:14
And the Mac Mini is amazing, and there's more to come.
  • 00:12:17
We know there's gonna be more M4 chips on the horizon.
  • 00:12:20
But it was a really good new laptop.
  • 00:12:23
    Thanks for watching.
  • 00:12:24
Catch you in the next one.
  • 00:12:26
    Peace.
  • 00:12:26
    (upbeat electronic music) (singer vocalizing)
