摘要

TLDRThe talk explores the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and spirituality, highlighting concerns about how AI impacts spiritual practices. Swami Sarva Priya Nand outlines four main areas of concern: Attention, as AI fosters distraction that contradicts meditation practices; Community, as technology can isolate individuals, reducing human interaction; Devotion, where AI may encourage material desires instead of fostering spiritual love; and ultimately, the understanding of self, contrasting the materialistic view perpetuated by AI with the spiritual perspective that sees consciousness as transcendent. The speaker emphasizes the need for mindfulness and awareness as AI continues to evolve and influence daily life.

时间轴

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

In this discussion, Swami Sarva Priya Nand emphasizes the connection between artificial intelligence (AI) and spirituality. He highlights that while the benefits of AI are acknowledged, there are ethical concerns to be addressed, particularly from the perspective of Indian philosophy. He introduces four key areas of concern: attention, community, devotion, and the concept of the self, which are impacted by the rise of AI technologies.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The first concern centers on attention, as technology and social media platforms are noted to distract individuals rather than foster concentrated focus needed for spiritual practices like meditation. This distraction can undermine the ability to train attention, crucial for both spiritual growth and effective learning in various settings. Consequently, the impact on meditation practices may be particularly severe, as the constant allure of notifications and digital distractions train younger generations toward restlessness rather than focused contemplation.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:17:05

The second concern addresses community and altruism; the pervasive use of technology can isolate individuals from real human interactions and diminish their awareness of fellow human beings’ suffering. This disconnection makes it increasingly difficult to cultivate compassion and engage in selfless actions, which are essential both for spirituality and social harmony. Overall, Swami Nand argues that these challenges underscore the need for a mindful approach to integrating spirituality with advancing AI technology.

    what do artificial intelligence and
  • 00:00:01
spirituality have to do with each other
  • 00:00:04
i have raised this issue with many gurus
  • 00:00:06
    many spiritual people from various
  • 00:00:08
    traditions
  • 00:00:09
but there's one person swami sarva priya
  • 00:00:11
nand of ramakrishna mission in new york
  • 00:00:14
who gets it i he asked me to explain ai
  • 00:00:17
to him and what the significance is he
  • 00:00:19
caught on very quickly so here he goes
  • 00:00:22
to a major conference sponsored by the
  • 00:00:25
    united nations on technology and
  • 00:00:27
    spirituality with various faith leaders
  • 00:00:31
and he in fact explains this answer from
  • 00:00:34
my book in a way that is absolutely
  • 00:00:37
amazing so i i invite you to listen to
  • 00:00:39
this and i thank swamiji here we go
  • 00:00:42
    i was not um
  • 00:00:45
i was not aware of the possible effects
  • 00:00:47
of ai on on the domain of spirituality
  • 00:00:49
    and philosophy
  • 00:00:51
    i must thank uh
  • 00:00:52
    rajiv malhotra's book
  • 00:00:55
this brought the whole issue to my
  • 00:00:57
    attention
  • 00:00:58
    artificial intelligence and the future
  • 00:01:01
of power it's published by rupa
  • 00:01:03
    publications
  • 00:01:05
    so uh
  • 00:01:07
based upon some of the concerns that
  • 00:01:08
rajim alhatra has raised here i'm going
  • 00:01:11
    to talk for the next
  • 00:01:13
10 minutes or so 10 12 minutes and
  • 00:01:16
raise four areas four specific areas of
  • 00:01:19
concern before i go into that
  • 00:01:22
i'm not complaining about ai here it's
  • 00:01:25
    not a negative talk it's
  • 00:01:27
    the
  • 00:01:28
power and promise of ai is
  • 00:01:31
is acknowledged and it is in fact even
  • 00:01:34
welcome it's just that because the
  • 00:01:36
    subject is ethics and ai
  • 00:01:38
what are the areas in which we need to
  • 00:01:40
    be watchful concerned and prepare
  • 00:01:43
    ourselves
  • 00:01:45
so i'm speaking only from my perspective
  • 00:01:49
    about perspective of
  • 00:01:50
    from perspective spirituality
  • 00:01:53
indian philosophy if you will from that
  • 00:01:55
    perspective
  • 00:01:56
    four areas of concern
  • 00:01:58
    the first area is attention
  • 00:02:03
    several
  • 00:02:04
months ago in fact last year we
  • 00:02:07
organized a retreat here in in garrison
  • 00:02:09
new york on meditation and we had
  • 00:02:12
    sessions on different approaches to
  • 00:02:15
    meditation buddhist mindfulness
  • 00:02:16
    meditation meditation in kashmir
  • 00:02:18
    shaivism
  • 00:02:20
    meditation in the bhakti traditions
  • 00:02:21
    meditation in
  • 00:02:23
    vedanta and so on
  • 00:02:25
and a professor of philosophy professor
  • 00:02:27
indam chakravarti when i told him about
  • 00:02:30
the scheme about of this retreat he said
  • 00:02:32
that's very interesting at the end of it
  • 00:02:34
what you should do is take a look at
  • 00:02:36
what is common to all these traditions
  • 00:02:39
so that would be interesting and we
  • 00:02:41
found in all these diverse traditions
  • 00:02:43
    you know buddhist meditation that's
  • 00:02:45
that's a perspective which does not
  • 00:02:47
    accept the existence of god
  • 00:02:49
compared to the bhakti traditions in
  • 00:02:51
hinduism which are all about god
  • 00:02:54
what could be common to these approaches
  • 00:02:57
    the
  • 00:02:58
the upshot was we discovered what is
  • 00:03:01
    underlying all meditation techniques all
  • 00:03:04
    meditation traditions is training of
  • 00:03:07
    attention
  • 00:03:08
so that's the common thing and that is
  • 00:03:10
an area of concern already with our
  • 00:03:13
    existing
  • 00:03:15
    internet and social media technologies
  • 00:03:18
    there was this
  • 00:03:19
    documentary film which made
  • 00:03:21
    uh some waves here
  • 00:03:23
    last year
  • 00:03:25
    the social dilemma
  • 00:03:26
which talked about how social media is
  • 00:03:29
impacting two areas one is uh attention
  • 00:03:33
    and the other one is
  • 00:03:34
    privacy
  • 00:03:36
    so
  • 00:03:37
you know all these facebook and twitter
  • 00:03:39
and you know all these social media
  • 00:03:42
    platforms
  • 00:03:44
where the first thing we notice is that
  • 00:03:47
    as enormous amount of
  • 00:03:50
services are provided to us and there is
  • 00:03:52
a saying and seems to be provided to us
  • 00:03:54
free and there is a saying that if
  • 00:03:56
something is being provided free to you
  • 00:03:58
then you are the product which is being
  • 00:04:01
sold and that is true these modern
  • 00:04:03
    social media platforms
  • 00:04:05
    they provide an
  • 00:04:07
enormous amount of free service to us
  • 00:04:10
but what is being sold there is
  • 00:04:13
us more specifically our attention so
  • 00:04:16
they talk about an attention economy see
  • 00:04:18
what propels these uh technologies what
  • 00:04:22
    fuels these technologies
  • 00:04:24
it is nothing more than money of course
  • 00:04:26
it's it's profit driven and so
  • 00:04:29
    what they discovered was
  • 00:04:31
    it is
  • 00:04:32
    not enough to provide interesting
  • 00:04:33
    content online anymore
  • 00:04:36
    we one must also
  • 00:04:39
    one must in fact
  • 00:04:40
specifically try to grab the attention
  • 00:04:43
of the person the whole idea is that
  • 00:04:45
    these platforms make money from
  • 00:04:47
    advertisement and so
  • 00:04:50
    that demands our attention
  • 00:04:53
what they have been doing in silicon
  • 00:04:55
    valley is designing and fine-tuning
  • 00:04:58
these platforms so that they kind of
  • 00:05:01
    train us into distraction
  • 00:05:04
    instead of concentrated and focused
  • 00:05:06
attention we are being trained into
  • 00:05:08
distraction let me give a practical
  • 00:05:09
example of what is meant by this our
  • 00:05:11
phones i also have one of those these
  • 00:05:14
smartphones have you noticed how once in
  • 00:05:17
a while they buzz or beep or there's a
  • 00:05:19
ting sound and something has come maybe
  • 00:05:22
a notification maybe a little message or
  • 00:05:24
a text or something it seems innocuous
  • 00:05:27
but there is something insidious there
  • 00:05:29
    the idea there is
  • 00:05:31
that it functions on the same
  • 00:05:34
same psychology as the slot machines and
  • 00:05:37
gambling machines in las vegas for
  • 00:05:39
    example
  • 00:05:40
they provide us with some incentive to
  • 00:05:43
keep looking to keep trying and it seems
  • 00:05:46
    it trains our
  • 00:05:48
    you know
  • 00:05:49
neuropsychology to keep giving giving us
  • 00:05:52
births bursts of dopamine once in a
  • 00:05:54
    while
  • 00:05:56
so that we get sort of addicted to keep
  • 00:05:58
looking at the device at the smartphone
  • 00:06:01
    or whatever
  • 00:06:02
the more we look at it once in a while
  • 00:06:04
we get a little bit of pleasure
  • 00:06:07
this is the psychology of addiction what
  • 00:06:09
is the advantage to these platforms
  • 00:06:12
they we are looking at them more and
  • 00:06:14
more and of course that leads to more
  • 00:06:17
advertisement revenue for them as far as
  • 00:06:20
i understand this is the point
  • 00:06:23
of these you know these constant
  • 00:06:24
    notifications
  • 00:06:28
one point here is that this means these
  • 00:06:31
    technologies
  • 00:06:32
these technologies are not neutral we
  • 00:06:35
always have this cliched idea that after
  • 00:06:37
all it is a technology and we've been
  • 00:06:38
hearing this also that is a technology
  • 00:06:40
that can have good uses and bad use it's
  • 00:06:42
    a tired old cliche
  • 00:06:44
    some technologies are not neutral
  • 00:06:47
somebody explained it very well in this
  • 00:06:48
country people have guns they keep lot
  • 00:06:50
    of guns unfortunately at home
  • 00:06:53
so the the practice is to keep the gun
  • 00:06:55
cabinet liquor cabinet and gun cabinet
  • 00:06:58
under lock and keep it so the children
  • 00:06:59
    cannot touch them
  • 00:07:01
now if the technology were neutral it
  • 00:07:02
can be used for good or bad
  • 00:07:05
why would you keep it under lock and key
  • 00:07:08
    because people everybody knows that
  • 00:07:10
there are some technologies which are
  • 00:07:12
more prone to accidents to causing
  • 00:07:15
    damage
  • 00:07:17
    this
  • 00:07:18
    the way
  • 00:07:19
    our
  • 00:07:21
internet technologies are going our the
  • 00:07:23
    way artificial is coming
  • 00:07:25
is a kind of technology like that which
  • 00:07:27
is not neutral it can actually and it is
  • 00:07:30
already causing some kind of damage
  • 00:07:32
    um
  • 00:07:33
    students
  • 00:07:34
    teachers and students are already
  • 00:07:35
talking about a phenomenon they call
  • 00:07:37
    continuous partial attention continuous
  • 00:07:40
    partial attention
  • 00:07:42
it's something that we are all uh we are
  • 00:07:44
all aware of in fact um you know in
  • 00:07:47
    meetings in classrooms
  • 00:07:49
these days you will notice peop it's not
  • 00:07:50
that people are not paying attention
  • 00:07:52
    people are paying attention
  • 00:07:54
    but only um intermittently sometimes
  • 00:07:57
they're looking at their phone sometimes
  • 00:07:59
at their laptop and then again listening
  • 00:08:01
    to you
  • 00:08:02
it's something that people who are
  • 00:08:04
listening here on this platform uh may
  • 00:08:06
    also be experiencing right now
  • 00:08:09
now what is the problem here one big
  • 00:08:12
    problem is
  • 00:08:13
    in spirituality
  • 00:08:15
as i said all meditation techniques
  • 00:08:17
depend upon attention upon the training
  • 00:08:20
of attention on the ability to focus and
  • 00:08:22
hold focus for long periods of time
  • 00:08:25
whether it is following the breadth in
  • 00:08:26
    mindfulness meditation or concentrating
  • 00:08:28
on the deity or holding a visualization
  • 00:08:31
in whichever way or self-inquiry in
  • 00:08:33
vedanta whichever way the fuel the the
  • 00:08:37
    the
  • 00:08:38
the fuel behind these practices is
  • 00:08:41
    attention
  • 00:08:42
now the more we become distracted the
  • 00:08:45
    more difficult it is to
  • 00:08:47
    pay attention to continuously hold
  • 00:08:49
attention this has already it is having
  • 00:08:53
severe effects in education in corporate
  • 00:08:55
life in every sphere of human
  • 00:08:58
interaction where people are are always
  • 00:09:00
    a little bit distracted
  • 00:09:02
but the most severe impact will be on
  • 00:09:05
people who try to meditate for example
  • 00:09:07
    it will become almost impossible
  • 00:09:09
so this is one area of concern the
  • 00:09:14
    spirituality depends on attention
  • 00:09:17
    and the training of attention
  • 00:09:20
what these technologies are doing and
  • 00:09:22
will probably do in an exponential
  • 00:09:24
    fashion in the near future
  • 00:09:27
is train us in the opposite direction um
  • 00:09:31
    surreptitiously without our knowledge
  • 00:09:34
from a very young age children will be
  • 00:09:36
    trained to distraction and restlessness
  • 00:09:39
    so this is one point
  • 00:09:40
    the second point is
  • 00:09:42
    community
  • 00:09:44
    selflessness altruistic action
  • 00:09:47
what one might call you know the term
  • 00:09:49
    karma yoga which basically means
  • 00:09:52
    that
  • 00:09:53
    our instinctive
  • 00:09:55
    the the the instinctive
  • 00:09:59
urge is to act for ourselves selfishly
  • 00:10:02
and if one wants to be spiritual one
  • 00:10:04
must extend the boundaries of the self
  • 00:10:08
    include others
  • 00:10:09
so engage in selfless action in
  • 00:10:12
    altruistic action in service activities
  • 00:10:15
    for example
  • 00:10:16
now what is the connection to ai
  • 00:10:19
one problem could be and is already is
  • 00:10:22
is that these technologies tend to cut
  • 00:10:24
us away from our fellow fellow human
  • 00:10:26
    beings
  • 00:10:28
it's a common sight everywhere if you go
  • 00:10:30
to an airport not in these pandemic days
  • 00:10:32
maybe but usually at an airport or a
  • 00:10:34
railway station you'll see hundreds of
  • 00:10:36
people thousands of people all sitting
  • 00:10:38
close together but not interacting with
  • 00:10:41
each other they're all looking at their
  • 00:10:43
screens and they're absorbed in the
  • 00:10:44
screens i go for walks in central park
  • 00:10:46
    here a beautiful place
  • 00:10:48
but half the time people are on their
  • 00:10:49
    screens they're not looking around
  • 00:10:52
in one of the upanishads and i think the
  • 00:10:54
qatar panishad it is said why is it that
  • 00:10:57
it's so difficult to realize the truth
  • 00:10:59
about ourselves the problem is that we
  • 00:11:01
    are
  • 00:11:02
    continuously externalized
  • 00:11:05
    our senses flow outwards
  • 00:11:08
so that is the problem we are always
  • 00:11:10
looking at the world outside and not
  • 00:11:11
inside and therefore it's difficult to
  • 00:11:13
realize the truth about ourselves so in

    openish it says this
  • 00:11:17
i remember many years ago i chanted that
  • 00:11:20
    particular verse
  • 00:11:23
in a talk in a conference
  • 00:11:26
    and the moderator who was
  • 00:11:30
    a retired ifs officer
  • 00:11:33
    and very
  • 00:11:34
erudite lady she stood up and said
  • 00:11:36
swamiji has said that we should
  • 00:11:38
we are too much engaged in looking at
  • 00:11:40
the world outside we should look within
  • 00:11:42
and i'm saying that it would be good if
  • 00:11:44
we were engaged in looking at the world
  • 00:11:45
offset we are not even looking at the
  • 00:11:47
world outside we are looking at our
  • 00:11:48
    screens
  • 00:11:50
    and that's now
  • 00:11:51
imagine when ai comes in how much more
  • 00:11:54
immersive that experience will be the
  • 00:11:57
the problem is that we might be so
  • 00:11:58
immersed in our virtual worlds that we
  • 00:12:01
forget to interact with our uh fellow
  • 00:12:03
beings we lose the sense of community
  • 00:12:05
and that makes compassion more difficult
  • 00:12:08
there have been studies which have shown
  • 00:12:11
that compassion first of all requires
  • 00:12:14
attention again we are back to the
  • 00:12:16
question of attention we must first be
  • 00:12:18
aware of our fellow human being and the
  • 00:12:20
suffering of that human being and then
  • 00:12:22
only compassion is evoked if we do not
  • 00:12:24
at all pay attention to the person next
  • 00:12:26
to me on the subway or you know in the
  • 00:12:28
    park
  • 00:12:30
how how are we going to be aware of the
  • 00:12:32
suffering of the others and where will
  • 00:12:34
    the motivation then be for
  • 00:12:36
    um you know
  • 00:12:38
for for compassion and for altruistic
  • 00:12:40
    action
  • 00:12:41
so that's the second uh uh
  • 00:12:43
    area problem area that
  • 00:12:45
    how can
  • 00:12:47
    there be motivation for altruistic
  • 00:12:49
action for compassion when we are not
  • 00:12:51
aware of our community of human of
  • 00:12:53
fellow human beings the third area of
  • 00:12:56
concern would be what might be generally
  • 00:12:58
    called bhakti
  • 00:13:00
    all religions
  • 00:13:02
theistic religions it's about god but
  • 00:13:04
    even the non-theistic religions like
  • 00:13:05
buddhism and jainism the the feeling of
  • 00:13:08
love and compassion and devotion is to
  • 00:13:11
    be cultivated so what
  • 00:13:14
what is the underlying philosophy is
  • 00:13:16
that our desires continuously flow out
  • 00:13:18
in 100 different channels through to the
  • 00:13:20
    world
  • 00:13:21
and ultimately these are not satisfying
  • 00:13:24
if you really want satisfaction and
  • 00:13:26
peace of mind you have to collect all
  • 00:13:27
these desires and sublimate them and
  • 00:13:30
    focus them either towards god
  • 00:13:32
or you know a transcendent being
  • 00:13:36
enlightened being like the buddha or the
  • 00:13:37
gene or whatever it is and focus it in
  • 00:13:40
    the love of all beings
  • 00:13:43
    now
  • 00:13:44
if ai and it's almost certain that ai is
  • 00:13:47
going to be driven by the profit motive
  • 00:13:49
it will even more insidiously more
  • 00:13:51
effectively uh seek to fulfill every
  • 00:13:54
    little desire and
  • 00:13:56
    maximize our
  • 00:13:58
outward urges our desires for 100
  • 00:14:01
    different things in the world
  • 00:14:02
it's going to be market driven profit
  • 00:14:04
driven anyway so that's another area of
  • 00:14:06
    concern
  • 00:14:07
that our bhakti traditions might be
  • 00:14:09
    impacted and finally
  • 00:14:12
from the perspective of vedanta the path
  • 00:14:14
of knowledge there is a curious
  • 00:14:17
similarity with uh the way ai functions
  • 00:14:20
and and how vedanta functions also but
  • 00:14:22
ultimately they are very dissimilar what
  • 00:14:24
is the similarity both of them they
  • 00:14:27
inquire into our self sense of self and
  • 00:14:31
    then analyze it
  • 00:14:32
vedanta says that you your apparent
  • 00:14:35
sense of self that i'm this limited body
  • 00:14:37
and mind this is not true this is a
  • 00:14:38
false self and we are shown
  • 00:14:40
by argument arguments and insights how
  • 00:14:43
we are we cannot be the body how we are
  • 00:14:45
not the mind that we are the spirit of
  • 00:14:47
    the atman the witness consciousness
  • 00:14:49
    beyond body and mind
  • 00:14:50
what ai does also is it analyzes our
  • 00:14:55
    thought patterns speech patterns and
  • 00:14:57
    behavior patterns building up enormous
  • 00:14:59
databases and then analyzes it using
  • 00:15:02
algorithms so the ideas of an
  • 00:15:05
    algorithmic self
  • 00:15:07
so it can be analyzed and divided and
  • 00:15:09
then focused upon and then micromanage
  • 00:15:11
    sort of
  • 00:15:12
but the problem with ai is that
  • 00:15:13
ultimately it does not find anything uh
  • 00:15:16
    higher or transcendent beyond this
  • 00:15:19
    so
  • 00:15:21
    there is a huge
  • 00:15:22
    philosophical difference
  • 00:15:25
you know the basis the materialistic
  • 00:15:27
basis of ai and the spiritual basis of
  • 00:15:30
of all our religious and spiritual
  • 00:15:32
traditions the if i were to put it in
  • 00:15:34
    one sentence it would be
  • 00:15:36
    the
  • 00:15:37
the basis of ai is that consciousness is
  • 00:15:40
    ultimately material and can be
  • 00:15:42
    infinitely subdivided and analyzed and
  • 00:15:45
    controlled and manipulated
  • 00:15:47
    the spiritual approach is consciousness
  • 00:15:50
is not material it is transcendent and
  • 00:15:53
it is indivisible and that is where we
  • 00:15:56
must find ultimately seek to find
  • 00:15:58
meaning and peace and transcendence so
  • 00:16:01
these four areas of concern which we
  • 00:16:03
need to look out for and manage in the
  • 00:16:06
years ahead the area of attention
  • 00:16:09
    the importance of focus versus
  • 00:16:11
    distraction the area of altruistic
  • 00:16:14
action unless we are connected with our
  • 00:16:16
    fellow fellow beings i'm afraid
  • 00:16:18
    unselfishness altruism might might
  • 00:16:20
    disappear altogether
  • 00:16:22
    and the area of devotion
  • 00:16:24
    into some higher power
  • 00:16:27
that is one area that might be impacted
  • 00:16:29
and finally the very philosophical idea
  • 00:16:31
of what is a human being
  • 00:16:34
what is our ground reality fundamental
  • 00:16:37
reality there there seems to be a
  • 00:16:39
conflict between the ai version of uh of
  • 00:16:41
a human being and the spiritual version
  • 00:16:44
of of what a human being or what we
  • 00:16:46
    truly are
