摘要

  • 00:00:01
    unfortunately I do sometimes wonder
  • 00:00:04
    whether my industry the retirement
  • 00:00:06
advising industry is unnecessarily we in
  • 00:00:10
a group of the US population that
  • 00:00:12
frankly many of you my viewers are part
  • 00:00:14
of and that's the group that's very good
  • 00:00:17
Savers already and perhaps you're too
  • 00:00:19
good of Savers and you're sacrificing
  • 00:00:22
your journey so in today's video I'm
  • 00:00:24
going to share with you five thing five
  • 00:00:26
signs that you might be over saving in
  • 00:00:30
    un necessarily sacrificing having fun
  • 00:00:32
today in order to prepare for a stronger
  • 00:00:35
and a a brighter future so let's jump in
  • 00:00:38
and the first one is if your favorite
  • 00:00:41
word is someday you know someday I'm
  • 00:00:45
going to go on a trip you know to to New
  • 00:00:48
York City and and and see the sky
  • 00:00:50
skyscrapers and and go to some shows and
  • 00:00:54
if someday maybe isn't coming like you
  • 00:00:57
thought it would you know if you thought
  • 00:00:59
you were sacrific ing for a year or two
  • 00:01:01
    maybe you're sacrificing when you're
  • 00:01:03
    putting yourself through college or
  • 00:01:05
trade school and you said when I get out
  • 00:01:07
of out of this then I'm going to splurge
  • 00:01:10
on myself and do some nice thing so if
  • 00:01:13
your favorite word is someday and and
  • 00:01:16
MPA guilty is charged it happens to me
  • 00:01:19
sometimes as well so that's the first
  • 00:01:21
sign the second sign is if you're
  • 00:01:24
putting off Adventures if you're putting
  • 00:01:27
    off opportunities to improve yourself
  • 00:01:31
    and to continuously grow and
  • 00:01:33
continuously learn because it's it can
  • 00:01:36
    be
  • 00:01:37
expensive right for instance one of the
  • 00:01:39
things I like doing my adventure right
  • 00:01:41
now is is travel traveling to different
  • 00:01:44
countries but you know I have a tendency
  • 00:01:47
to only go on these trips when I can
  • 00:01:50
score a really good deal on airfare and
  • 00:01:53
you know what sometimes like I'm here in
  • 00:01:56
New York City right now and it's as I
  • 00:01:58
record this it's early fall and it's
  • 00:02:01
absolutely gorgeous here so could I have
  • 00:02:03
gotten lower airfare in February when
  • 00:02:06
it's cold and and glue me out probably
  • 00:02:10
um un fortunately for me I was able to
  • 00:02:12
get inexpensive airfare in the fall but
  • 00:02:14
    if you're postponing Adventures if
  • 00:02:16
there's things that you want to do um if
  • 00:02:20
there's things that people that you love
  • 00:02:22
people in your life that want to do but
  • 00:02:25
you're constantly pushing it off and
  • 00:02:27
saying well we'll do that someday but
  • 00:02:29
    you're you're postponing these
  • 00:02:31
    Adventures or you're postponing learning
  • 00:02:34
either new hobbies or maybe new skills
  • 00:02:37
now learning new skills probably is
  • 00:02:40
going to have a pretty good return on
  • 00:02:42
investment for you but what about new
  • 00:02:45
hobbies I would argue that that's the
  • 00:02:47
spice of life that that's the return
  • 00:02:49
that all of us want which is the joy how
  • 00:02:52
much joy am I getting out for out of
  • 00:02:55
    this investment and there's there's a
  • 00:02:57
really good book that talks about that
  • 00:03:00
    it's called it's got a strange title
  • 00:03:02
admittedly it's written by Bill Perkins
  • 00:03:05
and it's called die with zero that talks
  • 00:03:07
about there's these periods of time that
  • 00:03:10
make sense for us to to do certain
  • 00:03:13
activities for instance if you've got
  • 00:03:15
young kids you know going to Disney
  • 00:03:17
World is probably something you want to
  • 00:03:19
do before they're teenagers and they get
  • 00:03:22
jaded uh and and and they're cynical
  • 00:03:26
right so there's a a pocket for that and
  • 00:03:28
then there's also a pocket for
  • 00:03:30
um a period of time that makes sense for
  • 00:03:32
us to do the activities that we we want
  • 00:03:34
to do I learned to skateboard I learned
  • 00:03:37
to surf in my 50s um and and I'm no
  • 00:03:41
longer in my 50s and I'm really glad I
  • 00:03:43
did that because it was easier to bounce
  • 00:03:45
back when when I wiped out um after that
  • 00:03:49
I could still learn to do those things
  • 00:03:51
now but you know my my my teenage years
  • 00:03:54
were the best years to have learned that
  • 00:03:56
but I didn't do that so if you're
  • 00:03:58
    postponing Adventure
  • 00:04:00
    the next one
  • 00:04:01
is sometimes when we're good at saving
  • 00:04:04
money sometimes when we're good at
  • 00:04:06
investing money we're afraid to take
  • 00:04:09
risk maybe we have a job that pays
  • 00:04:12
really well but maybe it requires us to
  • 00:04:15
work 10 or 20 hours a week more than
  • 00:04:18
what we wish we had to maybe we're
  • 00:04:20
working 50 or 60 hours a week instead of
  • 00:04:23
40 and maybe there's another job that
  • 00:04:26
doesn't pay as much but would give us
  • 00:04:28
better quality of life and maybe we're
  • 00:04:31
afraid to do that because you know we
  • 00:04:34
don't want to give up that salary or
  • 00:04:37
maybe in the back of our minds we know
  • 00:04:40
that there's another chapter in our
  • 00:04:41
lives and we want to switch careers but
  • 00:04:44
we're fearful to give up that warm and
  • 00:04:47
cozy feeling that we have in our current
  • 00:04:51
career that we know we're good at that
  • 00:04:53
    we've done for 5 10 15 or 20 years so if
  • 00:04:57
you're afraid to to take risk that might
  • 00:05:00
be a sign that you're saving too much
  • 00:05:02
that you're not enjoying the journey
  • 00:05:05
along the way now I'm not saying that we
  • 00:05:07
    should sacrifice our financial security
  • 00:05:10
and so for Point number three I want to
  • 00:05:13
share with you what the Fidelity
  • 00:05:15
Investments Fidelity is one of the
  • 00:05:17
largest custodians in the United States
  • 00:05:20
they have a report that they put out and
  • 00:05:22
they say this is how much money you
  • 00:05:24
should Benchmark to save by age and I
  • 00:05:28
want to share that here cuz if if you're
  • 00:05:30
three four five times the amount that
  • 00:05:34
Fidelity is saying you should have saved
  • 00:05:36
at a certain age maybe you can afford to
  • 00:05:39
ease off the throttle a little bit I'm
  • 00:05:41
not I'm not saying to not save any more
  • 00:05:43
money I'm not saying to put your
  • 00:05:45
financial future at risk but I'm saying
  • 00:05:47
to blend it to to to seek you want both
  • 00:05:51
if you can you want to enjoy today and
  • 00:05:54
also um prepare for a secure future but
  • 00:05:57
    Fidelity's numbers would say
  • 00:06:00
by the time we're 30 years old we should
  • 00:06:02
have one times our salary saved by the
  • 00:06:06
time we're 35 years old we should have
  • 00:06:08
two times our salary saved by the time
  • 00:06:11
you're 40 we should have three times our
  • 00:06:14
salary saved by the time we're 45 we
  • 00:06:17
should have four times our salary saved
  • 00:06:20
by 50 we should have six times so let's
  • 00:06:23
    say you're making $100,000 a year and
  • 00:06:27
    instead of
  • 00:06:28
$600,000 which is what Fidelity saying
  • 00:06:31
you should have saved at 50 let's say
  • 00:06:34
    you've got $2.5 million saved I'm just
  • 00:06:36
throwing out numbers maybe you're 30 and
  • 00:06:39
    and and you're making 50,000 a year
  • 00:06:41
instead of having $50,000 saved maybe
  • 00:06:44
you've got $150,000 which is saying
  • 00:06:47
you're you're ahead of the game and
  • 00:06:49
maybe you can you can ease off that
  • 00:06:51
throttle a little bit let me just finish
  • 00:06:53
the Fidelity table people 55 Fidelity
  • 00:06:56
saying they should have seven times
  • 00:06:58
their salary say people 60 Fidelity says
  • 00:07:01
eight times and by the time you're 67
  • 00:07:04
you should have 10 times your salary if
  • 00:07:06
    you're making 50,000 a year that would
  • 00:07:09
    be$ 500,000 you're making $100,000 a
  • 00:07:12
year that would be a million dollar but
  • 00:07:15
if you're way ahead of that maybe that's
  • 00:07:17
    a
  • 00:07:19
sign that you can you can ease off the
  • 00:07:22
throttle a little bit and then I also
  • 00:07:24
want to talk about as we get older as
  • 00:07:27
our savings start to to accumulate our
  • 00:07:30
money starts working harder for us than
  • 00:07:34
we're working for our money because the
  • 00:07:36
growth on that existing base and a great
  • 00:07:40
place as our money's working harder for
  • 00:07:42
us a great place for us to buy back some
  • 00:07:45
of our time to throttle back to work
  • 00:07:48
less is to hire other people for tasks
  • 00:07:52
that are easy to hire other people for
  • 00:07:55
I'm thinking like you know for me mowing
  • 00:07:58
the lawn um when my kids were young I
  • 00:08:01
wanted them to see Dad out mowing the
  • 00:08:04
lawn so I mowed the lawn but you know
  • 00:08:06
what when they went away to college I
  • 00:08:09
paid somebody to do that and we've paid
  • 00:08:12
somebody we haven't always paid somebody
  • 00:08:13
to clean our house but we do now those
  • 00:08:16
tend to be the easy ones and the other
  • 00:08:18
big bang for the buck might be investing
  • 00:08:20
in our health and maybe that means
  • 00:08:23
somebody does some meal prepping for us
  • 00:08:25
to make that easy or uh there's
  • 00:08:28
different services for like $100 a year
  • 00:08:31
you can get groceries delivered to your
  • 00:08:34
house um this is not sponsored by the
  • 00:08:36
Walton family and Walmart but um Walmart
  • 00:08:41
plus offers grocery delivery and it's
  • 00:08:43
one of the best $100 I spend a year so
  • 00:08:48
if you're not having other PE if you're
  • 00:08:50
not buying back your time maybe it's
  • 00:08:53
time to think about throttling back and
  • 00:08:55
if you also want to see not just how
  • 00:08:57
much you should save which is what that
  • 00:08:59
Fidelity report was but what the average
  • 00:09:02
income is for retirees in the United
  • 00:09:05
States that's why I made this video up
  • 00:09:07
here take a look I think you'll find it
  • 00:09:09
    fascinating I suspect you're doing
  • 00:09:12
really well I'll see you in the next
  • 00:09:14
video thanks for watching this one
