TLDRThis video by Megan Moona explores the complexities and challenges of marriage in Korea, specifically focusing on the difficult dynamics with in-laws, particularly mothers-in-law. She shares two illustrative stories, shedding light on how in-law interference can lead to marital strain. The first story revolves around Mr. and Mrs. Kim, where cultural expectations and the mother's overbearing behavior adversely affect the marriage, eventually leading to divorce. Megan illustrates specific incidents like the reservation of sleeping arrangements during a trip, highlighting the psychological influence mothers-in-law may have over their sons and the lack of boundaries. She emphasizes that such stories, while intriguing, are not representative of all Korean families. The second narrative focuses on another couple where the mother-in-law's disrespectful interference, including naming the child, results in tension and violence, ultimately prompting a divorce. Megan concludes with hope for changing attitudes in the next generation, as contemporary Korean society becomes more aware of mental health and respectful familial boundaries.

Megan, who is feeling unwell, shares her interest in understanding the complexities of Korean marriages due to in-law dynamics. She recalls crazy mom-in-law stories she researched, aiming not to mock but to discuss the cultural and emotional nuances involved. Megan aims to share intriguing anecdotes, starting with a popular story from Korean show JTBC about a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Kim, and their insightful interaction with their in-laws which reflects on cultural expectation and love boundaries.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The story of Mr. and Mrs. Kim unveils cultural tensions during family interactions, highlighting the discomforts Mrs. Kim experiences when her mother-in-law oversteps boundaries, like buying underwear for her son and dictating what Mrs. Kim should eat. This detailed exploration into family dynamics showcases the struggles faced and Mrs. Kim's consideration of divorce due to her husband's inaction in defending her preferences against his mother's dominating behavior.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

As the story continues, the bizarre family dynamics persist with a family trip reflecting deep-seated issues. The mother-in-law's insistence on sleeping in the same room as her son exemplifies the unhealthy attachment, while the father-in-law's lack of action highlights traditional, passive male roles. The story underscores the emotional turmoil experienced by Mrs. Kim leading to a divorce, exacerbated by a lack of support from both her husband and father-in-law, who fail to establish boundaries.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:20:00

A new story of a couple, also named Mr. and Mrs. Kim, introduces a different mother-in-law challenge, beginning with a disrespectful first meeting and evolving through financial demands secretly placed on Mrs. Kim. The narrative continues to highlight the transactional nature of some Korean familial relationships, as well as the silent acceptance and generosity often expected from daughter-in-laws. Mrs. Kim navigates this uncomfortably, showing resilience despite her in-law's backward demands.

  • 00:20:00 - 00:25:00

The conflict heightens when traditional beliefs clash with medical advice during a pregnancy complication, with the mother-in-law's insistence on a natural birth risking Mrs. Kim's health. This sparks the husband's rare intervention to protect his wife. Despite eventually asserting some boundaries, they face ongoing in-law interference, particularly with naming their child, and the mother-in-law's culturally rooted superstitions causing additional stress. Mrs. Kim's patience wears thin with continuous disrespect.

  • 00:25:00 - 00:30:16

The culmination of disrespect forces Mrs. Kim to confront her mother-in-law directly, resulting in a physical altercation that further diminishes her marriage's stability. Her husband's unwillingness to defend her against his mother's aggression prompts community reactions emphasizing the importance of spousal support and boundary setting. Megan concludes by expressing a cautious optimism about evolving societal norms addressing these generational conflicts, hoping for healthier family practices in future generations.

at all and I had to breathe out of my

any stretch of the imagination so I got

like zero sleep last night I am dead but
  • 00:00:38
I am here to share these stories with
  • 00:00:40
you last week I made a video talking
  • 00:00:42
about why marriage in Korea is difficult
  • 00:00:45
and I talked about a lot of the
  • 00:00:46
psychological aspects behind it and one
  • 00:00:48
of the main reasons why it's difficult
  • 00:00:50
is because of in-laws mom- in-laws and
  • 00:00:52
while doing the research for that video
  • 00:00:54
I came across a bunch of crazy
  • 00:00:56
mom-in-law stories so I asked you guys
  • 00:00:58
in the last video if you wanted me to sh
  • 00:01:00
share some of those with you you guys
  • 00:01:01
were like yes yes yes please share so
  • 00:01:05
that's what we're doing today so I do
  • 00:01:07
want to preface by saying the intention
  • 00:01:09
of this video is not to make fun of
  • 00:01:11
these people or to talk bad about Korean
  • 00:01:14
mom- in-laws because I do feel bad for
  • 00:01:16
them because the older generation is
  • 00:01:18
very much a product of that culture at
  • 00:01:21
that time and I do think that in
  • 00:01:23
cultures like this where husband and
  • 00:01:25
wife don't really have good quality
  • 00:01:28
marriages it's very easy easy for the
  • 00:01:30
women to just latch on to their sons
  • 00:01:32
which is what happens a lot so when you
  • 00:01:34
think about it it's sort of like a way
  • 00:01:35
for them to get and receive love so I
  • 00:01:38
    totally understand the psychology behind
  • 00:01:39
that and I feel for these people however
  • 00:01:41
it doesn't mean that we can't enjoy
  • 00:01:43
listening to the drama and hearing the
  • 00:01:45
tea about these stories because they're
  • 00:01:47
very interesting today I'm going to
  • 00:01:48
share two stories from jtbc news jtbc
  • 00:01:52
news has a segment on it
  • 00:01:55
called and on that show people send in
  • 00:01:58
their stories there's a couple of news
  • 00:02:00
    announcers sharing their opinion they
  • 00:02:01
always have therapists to sort of share
  • 00:02:03
their opinion about the psychology Andor
  • 00:02:05
if it's grounds for divorce Etc it's a
  • 00:02:07
really interesting show last month one
  • 00:02:09
came out and it blew up it's got like
  • 00:02:12
1.2 million views and like over 3,000
  • 00:02:15
comments we're going to go over that one
  • 00:02:17
second so this first story the person
  • 00:02:18
who sent in this story the news
  • 00:02:20
announcers just called her Mrs Kim and
  • 00:02:23
her future husband boyfriend let's just
  • 00:02:25
call him Mr Kim So Mr and Mrs Kim and
  • 00:02:28
    then mom-in-law and father-in-law just
  • 00:02:30
call them mom and father-in-law so Mrs
  • 00:02:32
Kim met her boyfriend they seem to hit
  • 00:02:34
it off really well after about 6 months
  • 00:02:36
they decided that they wanted to move
  • 00:02:38
toward marriage so Mr Kim called up his
  • 00:02:41
parents set up a meeting between Mrs Kim
  • 00:02:44
and the parents you know in Korea people
  • 00:02:46
typically get permission to get married
  • 00:02:48
so it's always necessary that you set up
  • 00:02:51
a meeting with the parents and the
  • 00:02:52
parents have to approve of the person
  • 00:02:54
before any marriages can take place so
  • 00:02:56
the First Time Mrs Kim met the parents
  • 00:02:58
they met at a shrimp breant restaurant
  • 00:03:00
and I don't know what it is but I think
  • 00:03:01
Korean men really like to remove the
  • 00:03:04
shells from the shrimp for their ladies
  • 00:03:06
in Korea when you go get shrimp at
  • 00:03:08
    restaurants especially grilled shrimp
  • 00:03:09
it's almost always going to have the
  • 00:03:11
shells and everything and all the little
  • 00:03:13
legs and like the head and like the
  • 00:03:14
    little antennas everything is intact
  • 00:03:16
it's a fully intact shrimp and Mr Moon
  • 00:03:19
does this for me too like whenever we go
  • 00:03:20
out and have shrimp even to this day we
  • 00:03:23
have shrimp at home he's always going to
  • 00:03:24
peel my shrimp for me I thought it was a
  • 00:03:26
Mr Moon thing but I've heard so many
  • 00:03:27
stories of other men peeling shrimp for
  • 00:03:29
women I guess it's a thing in Korea men
  • 00:03:32
peel the shrimp for you which is great
  • 00:03:33
because they look like little nasty bugs
  • 00:03:35
to me and I personally don't like
  • 00:03:37
touching the little leg so thank you Mr
  • 00:03:39
Moon so Mr Kim and Mrs Kim are sat
  • 00:03:41
    before Mother and father-in-law the
  • 00:03:44
shrimp comes out Mr Kim starts peeling
  • 00:03:46
the shrimp and he gives it to Mrs Kim
  • 00:03:49
his girlfriend at the time mom-in-law
  • 00:03:55
looks so you're not going to get your
  • 00:03:57
mom shrimp first you're going to get
  • 00:03:59
your girlfriend shrimp first so Mrs Kim
  • 00:04:01
feels a little bit uncomfortable like
  • 00:04:03
okay what what is this but nobody really
  • 00:04:05
says anything they just kind of gloss
  • 00:04:07
over it and apparently everything else
  • 00:04:09
was fine after that because Mrs Kim went
  • 00:04:11
on to marry Mr Kim so when they first
  • 00:04:14
got married the mom-in-law would come to
  • 00:04:15
the house often like several times a
  • 00:04:17
week to bring over you know side dishes
  • 00:04:20
and food for her son but one day she
  • 00:04:22
came over and she brought her son some
  • 00:04:25
underwear that she bought and she says
  • 00:04:26
    to the daughter-in-law now so
  • 00:04:30
how can you know my son's underwear size
  • 00:04:32
like you don't know his underwear
  • 00:04:35
size I know the type of underwear that
  • 00:04:38
my son likes and then she goes on to
  • 00:04:42
say I'm going to buy his underwear from
  • 00:04:44
    now
  • 00:04:45
on Mrs Kim is like um excuse me and here
  • 00:04:49
she sort of shared that she was worried
  • 00:04:52
that she's just being too sensitive like
  • 00:04:53
am I just being too sensitive is this
  • 00:04:55
something that's appropriate do all moms
  • 00:04:57
continue to buy their adult 30-some year
  • 00:04:59
    old
  • 00:05:00
    Sons even after marriage
  • 00:05:02
underwear so she just kind of Let It Go
  • 00:05:05
and whatever they didn't want to cause a
  • 00:05:07
fight so one day shortly after Mr and
  • 00:05:09
Mrs Kim went to mother and
  • 00:05:11
father-in-law's house to have a meal
  • 00:05:13
there's a bunch of side dishes one of my
  • 00:05:15
favorite side dishes is kadi which is
  • 00:05:17
like Fern break and then it just has a
  • 00:05:19
little bit of soy sauce and sesame oil
  • 00:05:21
on it a little bit of sesame seeds and
  • 00:05:24
mom-in-law made something called K which
  • 00:05:27
is bra short ribs and like awe sweet soy
  • 00:05:30
sauce sauce is really good so when you
  • 00:05:32
go to your mother-in-law's house and
  • 00:05:34
she's in the kitchen cooking you're
  • 00:05:36
supposed to go in and ask if she needs
  • 00:05:37
any help so Mrs Kim goes into her mom's
  • 00:05:40
kitchen hey do you need some help and
  • 00:05:43
she goes to pick up something to start
  • 00:05:45
    helping mom-in-law smacks the
  • 00:05:48
hand I'm going to be cooking the food
  • 00:05:50
that my son eats so the daughter-in-law
  • 00:05:53
didn't do anything she just kind of sat
  • 00:05:54
around and then the table was set
  • 00:05:56
there's all these side dishes so
  • 00:05:58
delicious everything smells good so the
  • 00:06:00
mom-in-law takes her Chopsticks picks up
  • 00:06:02
a piece of the braid short ribs and puts
  • 00:06:04
it up to her son and
  • 00:06:06
says my son do you want to have some
  • 00:06:09
braid short ribs and to the
  • 00:06:11
    daughter-in-law she picks up her
  • 00:06:12
Chopsticks and picks up some Kar which
  • 00:06:14
is Fern break that like brown stem
  • 00:06:17
looking thing that you see in the piping
  • 00:06:21
pop you might be like okay well she's
  • 00:06:23
    offering the daughter-in-law some food
  • 00:06:24
like what's the big deal but how it is
  • 00:06:27
is she's saying this good thing this
  • 00:06:29
meat meat is going to be for my son and
  • 00:06:31
you the daughter-in-law you know you
  • 00:06:33
just have the vegetables right no matter
  • 00:06:35
how good these vegetables are obviously
  • 00:06:37
    we know the
  • 00:06:38
meat that is the sustenance right the
  • 00:06:41
meat and potatoes is what we say even as
  • 00:06:44
a colloquial expression in English right
  • 00:06:46
like the main sustenance of the meal and
  • 00:06:50
basically she's saying I'm going to give
  • 00:06:51
my son these good things and you a you
  • 00:06:53
    just take
  • 00:06:54
whatever Mrs Kim said this is the first
  • 00:06:56
    time she seriously considered divorced
  • 00:06:58
because her husband didn't say anything
  • 00:07:00
like you would expect he would say oh my
  • 00:07:01
wife likes KY B Jim too or she can have
  • 00:07:03
KY B Jim or whatever but he didn't say
  • 00:07:05
anything but Mrs Kim felt like very just
  • 00:07:07
disrespected like why is this woman
  • 00:07:09
coming for me like this so then not too
  • 00:07:10
long after the father-in-law was like
  • 00:07:13
hey why don't we all travel together
  • 00:07:14
let's go on a trip you know Mr and Mrs
  • 00:07:17
Kim mother and father-in-law like what
  • 00:07:18
could go wrong we would all Bond and it
  • 00:07:20
would be a great trip right the problem
  • 00:07:23
started right from even reserving the
  • 00:07:25
accommodations for the trip if you going
  • 00:07:27
on a trip with your in-laws you you
  • 00:07:29
would expect that we would reserve two
  • 00:07:31
rooms one for Mr and Mrs Kim and one for
  • 00:07:35
    mother and father-in-law but mom-in-law
  • 00:07:36
comes out and says you know what I want
  • 00:07:38
to sleep in the room with my son so how
  • 00:07:40
about we all get one big room and we all
  • 00:07:43
sleep in one big room together this is
  • 00:07:45
like one of the times when the son spoke
  • 00:07:46
up he was like um you know it probably
  • 00:07:48
be uncomfortable if we're all sharing
  • 00:07:50
one big room like let's have our
  • 00:07:51
    separate space
  • 00:07:54
k I'm going to sleep in the room with my
  • 00:07:56
son it's been a long time since we've
  • 00:07:58
done that and she said says to the
  • 00:08:02
daughter-in-law you just go sleep in
  • 00:08:03
another room and be comfortable so for
  • 00:08:05
this trip they booked three rooms one
  • 00:08:09
for the daughter-in-law one for the
  • 00:08:11
    father-in-law and one for the
  • 00:08:13
mother-in-law to sleep in the room with
  • 00:08:14
her son Mr km the whole time I'm just
  • 00:08:17
thinking where is the father-in-law like
  • 00:08:19
the father-in-law should say hey honey
  • 00:08:21
maybe that's a bit much you going to
  • 00:08:23
sleep in the room with me and they going
  • 00:08:24
to sleep in the room together but the
  • 00:08:26
father-in-law's like what is he doing so
  • 00:08:28
they booked the accommodation that way
  • 00:08:30
and Mrs Kim was sort of complaining to
  • 00:08:31
her husband like hey what's going on and
  • 00:08:33
    he was like you
  • 00:08:35
know I'm going to sleep with my mom
  • 00:08:37
she's just lonely that's why you know
  • 00:08:39
she wants to sleep with me but it's like
  • 00:08:41
she has a husband he's not dead even if
  • 00:08:44
her husband was dead and she was a widow
  • 00:08:46
still that would be just not even
  • 00:08:48
appropriate right it's like okay your
  • 00:08:50
husband died find some friends I don't
  • 00:08:52
know definitely don't be trying to sleep
  • 00:08:54
in the room with your son sometimes when
  • 00:08:55
these stories are on I'm like watching
  • 00:08:57
them like with Mr Moon and I be like sir
  • 00:09:00
    if you
  • 00:09:01
ever if she as a mom-in-law
  • 00:09:05
ever we will be done because I could
  • 00:09:08
never ever but apparently this is a
  • 00:09:10
thing in the last video I mentioned this
  • 00:09:12
monk who's really popular on YouTube p
  • 00:09:15
he has like millions of subscribers and
  • 00:09:17
people call into him and like say their
  • 00:09:19
concerns and he gives them advice like
  • 00:09:21
two years ago there was a story on there
  • 00:09:23
and this Widow mom-in-law lived with her
  • 00:09:25
son and his wife in a one room apartment
  • 00:09:28
and there was just like a cur that
  • 00:09:29
blocked it off and the mom-in-law wants
  • 00:09:32
to sleep with the son so the wife has
  • 00:09:34
just been sleeping on the couch and
  • 00:09:36
    mom-in-law and son-in-law have been
  • 00:09:37
sleeping like sort of out of the way
  • 00:09:39
behind the curtain and she was married
  • 00:09:40
to this man for 25 years I cannot anyway
  • 00:09:44
but I've heard many stories of like mom-
  • 00:09:46
in-laws wanting to like sleep like next
  • 00:09:48
to their sons and stuff it's not common
  • 00:09:50
I don't want people in here to think
  • 00:09:51
that I'm saying that it's super common
  • 00:09:53
but I've just heard a lot of stories and
  • 00:09:55
like of stuff like that happening so
  • 00:09:57
there are some people who do that but
  • 00:09:59
it's definitely not the most common
  • 00:10:01
thing but back to the story so I said
  • 00:10:03
what is the father-in-law doing like why
  • 00:10:04
isn't he saying wife get it together
  • 00:10:07
apparently he's just going along with
  • 00:10:09
whatever she wants because when they
  • 00:10:10
were on that trip together which they
  • 00:10:12
did actually go on if it was me I would
  • 00:10:14
have said well I'm not going on a trip
  • 00:10:16
why don't you just go with your mom by
  • 00:10:17
yourself cuz apparently that's what she
  • 00:10:18
wants and I don't know I probably would
  • 00:10:20
have gotten a divorce already but in the
  • 00:10:22
story she didn't say where they went but
  • 00:10:24
I'm going to say they went to jedu so
  • 00:10:25
they're in jedu do it's beautiful
  • 00:10:27
beautiful scenery and the mom's like why
  • 00:10:30
don't we all take a picture so the
  • 00:10:31
father-in-law is like okay I'll take the
  • 00:10:32
    picture of everyone mom-in-law goes
  • 00:10:35
grabs her son's arm sort of nudges the
  • 00:10:39
wife Mrs Kim away and she
  • 00:10:42
says you got to take a picture with your
  • 00:10:44
mom first like she comes after me and
  • 00:10:47
Mrs Kim shared in her story that at this
  • 00:10:49
point she felt like she's the second
  • 00:10:50
wife to Mr Kim right the first wife is
  • 00:10:53
the mom the second wife is her and she's
  • 00:10:54
like I cannot stay in this situation
  • 00:10:56
much longer she didn't last very long
  • 00:10:58
she got a divorce after a year but even
  • 00:11:00
still that's longer than I would have
  • 00:11:01
lasted there are some people and stories
  • 00:11:03
I've heard from divorce lawyers where
  • 00:11:04
    people in these situations literally
  • 00:11:06
    like 2 3 months later they're like I'm
  • 00:11:08
out so at this point in the story she
  • 00:11:09
shares that Mr Kim also has a younger
  • 00:11:12
sister up until this point you thought
  • 00:11:14
that Mr cim was maybe an only child but
  • 00:11:17
no there's a younger sister and
  • 00:11:18
apparently the younger sister left the
  • 00:11:20
house because the mom shared so much
  • 00:11:21
favoritism toward the son and it's so
  • 00:11:24
sad this daughter said that she never
  • 00:11:26
felt any type of Love or warmth from her
  • 00:11:28
mom at all so it's as soon as she could
  • 00:11:29
she started working and left the house
  • 00:11:31
and like how sad is that to not feel any
  • 00:11:33
love for your mom and see your mom
  • 00:11:35
fawning over you know your brother like
  • 00:11:37
that like I can't imagine what kind of
  • 00:11:39
big impact it would have on her but at
  • 00:11:41
least she was somebody who was like you
  • 00:11:42
know what I'm going to get out and take
  • 00:11:44
control of my own life and live cuz I've
  • 00:11:46
heard that there are people who go
  • 00:11:47
opposite and like bendo backwards to try
  • 00:11:49
and please their parents instead so good
  • 00:11:51
on her for getting out anyway the trip
  • 00:11:53
to Judo is over everyone's back at home
  • 00:11:56
a couple days later after coming back
  • 00:11:57
from Judo Mrs Kim is at home getting
  • 00:12:00
some cleaning done Ding Dong doorbell
  • 00:12:02
rings she goes and gets it it's a
  • 00:12:04
package she opens it up it's some couple
  • 00:12:06
clothes it's like a sweatpants like
  • 00:12:08
    sweatshirt and sweatpants couple set
  • 00:12:10
    there's like a man's size and a woman's
  • 00:12:12
size in there so she's thinking because
  • 00:12:14
of that trip that didn't go so well
  • 00:12:16
maybe mom-in-law is just trying to make
  • 00:12:18
amends and send them some couple clothes
  • 00:12:20
    that they can wear mom-in-law
  • 00:12:26
calls the couple clothes arrived all
  • 00:12:28
    right right
  • 00:12:34
Mrs Kim is like what you just ordered
  • 00:12:37
some couple clothes that you want to
  • 00:12:39
wear with your son-in-law for the next
  • 00:12:40
time we go on a trip the mom-in-law goes
  • 00:12:42
on to say that she had them sent to the
  • 00:12:44
house so her son could try it on to make
  • 00:12:46
sure it fits so that she can get a
  • 00:12:48
different size if she needed later on it
  • 00:12:51
was at this point in time that Miss Kim
  • 00:12:52
decided to divorce I don't blame her
  • 00:12:54
everyone in the comments was like
  • 00:12:56
divorce divorce divorce one thing that a
  • 00:12:58
lot of people are saying nowadays and I
  • 00:13:00
think a lot of people are feeling is
  • 00:13:01
that mainly it's up to the husband to
  • 00:13:04
sort of set those boundaries like the
  • 00:13:05
older generation is sort of set in their
  • 00:13:07
ways and are a product of their ways and
  • 00:13:09
    mother-in-law's husband father-in-law
  • 00:13:11
    definitely should have been blocking
  • 00:13:12
that from a while ago but maybe her
  • 00:13:14
personality is just strong and people
  • 00:13:15
just don't want to fight with her and
  • 00:13:16
they think it's easier to just give her
  • 00:13:18
    what she wants instead
  • 00:13:20
of going against it cuz maybe she throws
  • 00:13:22
a big tantrum but definitely one thing I
  • 00:13:25
said in the last video all crane mom-
  • 00:13:27
in-laws are not like this where they're
  • 00:13:29
like really trying to treat your uh
  • 00:13:32
husband like their husband but they
  • 00:13:34
inevitably will do things that you feel
  • 00:13:36
like cross the line so you have to make
  • 00:13:38
sure that you have a partner who's
  • 00:13:40
willing to speak up and set those
  • 00:13:41
boundaries really strongly like Mr Moon
  • 00:13:43
does otherwise it would be very
  • 00:13:45
difficult and also you have to be
  • 00:13:47
someone who's willing to speak up for
  • 00:13:49
what you feel uncomfortable with and
  • 00:13:50
what you will and will not tolerate it's
  • 00:13:52
not for the faint of heart if you're
  • 00:13:54
somebody who's a people pleaser and
  • 00:13:55
you're married here and you have in-laws
  • 00:13:57
    that are like very traditional
  • 00:14:00
it could be very difficult to you just a
  • 00:14:02
for warning so this next story I
  • 00:14:03
actually found this morning I was going
  • 00:14:05
to do another story but I found this one
  • 00:14:07
it popped up immediately because it's
  • 00:14:08
been one of the most viral ones that
  • 00:14:11
they've had and the person who sent in
  • 00:14:12
the stor to jtbc news is also a Miss Kim
  • 00:14:15
so we will be calling Mr and Mrs Kim and
  • 00:14:18
mother and father-in-law once again so
  • 00:14:20
Mrs Kim is around 35 years old she met
  • 00:14:22
an amazing man figured that they should
  • 00:14:24
get married so on the first meeting she
  • 00:14:26
    had with her mother-in-law her
  • 00:14:28
mother-in-law addressed her like yeah no
  • 00:14:31
    which is very disrespectful language
  • 00:14:33
when you're first meeting people in
  • 00:14:35
Korea there's different type of language
  • 00:14:37
that you use there's like a very
  • 00:14:38
    respectful language where you're saying
  • 00:14:40
things and you're putting you at the end
  • 00:14:42
there's also something called very high
  • 00:14:44
language where you might use IM and you
  • 00:14:47
use a completely different set of words
  • 00:14:49
for stuff for example house is jib but
  • 00:14:52
when you're being respectful tone you
  • 00:14:53
will say Tech so the words are different
  • 00:14:56
I'm assuming many of you guys maybe know
  • 00:14:58
basic level Korean but eat M for older
  • 00:15:01
person you use a word like like it's
  • 00:15:04
just a totally different language so you
  • 00:15:05
    have to
  • 00:15:07
learn extra words for stuff to address
  • 00:15:10
old people like is that serious like
  • 00:15:12
rankings and who's older and who's not
  • 00:15:14
now when you meet an older person they
  • 00:15:15
can talk to you and P my right away it
  • 00:15:17
really irritates me because old people
  • 00:15:21
sometimes show such a huge lack of
  • 00:15:22
respect for anybody and so it really
  • 00:15:25
irritates me when you meet someone for
  • 00:15:26
the very first time older are not and
  • 00:15:28
they speak p in like informal language
  • 00:15:31
um I guess I've been in Korea too long I
  • 00:15:33
expect to be respected in the amount of
  • 00:15:35
respect that I give to you so it's not
  • 00:15:37
typical for a respectful old person even
  • 00:15:39
if they meet someone younger they
  • 00:15:41
typically will use a bit of formal
  • 00:15:43
language they'll end everything with you
  • 00:15:46
right because they don't know you still
  • 00:15:47
right maybe after you met a couple times
  • 00:15:49
then maybe they'll switch to informal
  • 00:15:50
language because they're older they can
  • 00:15:52
make that decision but when you first
  • 00:15:53
meet someone especially not the person
  • 00:15:56
who's going to be marrying your son you
  • 00:15:57
definitely wouldn't be like yeah no
  • 00:15:59
no means you yah is just like hey like
  • 00:16:02
    that's completely disrespectful I don't
  • 00:16:04
even talk to moon like that like we
  • 00:16:06
don't even talk to each other like that
  • 00:16:07
so her mom-in-law was addressing her in
  • 00:16:09
that way just very very informally and
  • 00:16:11
disrespectfully but she thought you know
  • 00:16:12
maybe that's just how my mother-in-law
  • 00:16:14
my future mother-in-law is whatever for
  • 00:16:17
whatever reason she proceeded to go
  • 00:16:19
along with the marriage when Mr and Mrs
  • 00:16:21
Kim decided to get married they decided
  • 00:16:23
not to get any help from either side of
  • 00:16:25
the family and they also decided that
  • 00:16:27
they weren't going to exchange gifts
  • 00:16:29
there's something called Y and Yan which
  • 00:16:32
are gifts that either side sort of
  • 00:16:34
    exchanges for themselves sometimes it
  • 00:16:36
could be a huge amount of money or just
  • 00:16:38
like very very expensive gifts like I'm
  • 00:16:40
talking in the thousands or tens of
  • 00:16:42
thousands of dollars of money that you
  • 00:16:44
    exchange between families for this
  • 00:16:46
marriage to happen nowadays people don't
  • 00:16:48
    do that I didn't do that it's just it's
  • 00:16:50
outdated but there are still a lot of
  • 00:16:51
older people who want to do it and think
  • 00:16:54
it's necessary nowadays when people get
  • 00:16:56
married they typically up until marriage
  • 00:16:58
the parents support you even get you a
  • 00:16:59
house like to live in after marriage but
  • 00:17:02
in a case where your parents are paying
  • 00:17:04
for your marriage paying for your house
  • 00:17:06
after marriage you know that they're
  • 00:17:08
going to be intruding and Breaking All
  • 00:17:09
    the boundaries because they feel
  • 00:17:10
entitled to do so because they are the
  • 00:17:12
ones who set up this marriage for you so
  • 00:17:14
a lot of younger people are like they
  • 00:17:15
don't want to accept money or anything
  • 00:17:17
from their parents because they feel
  • 00:17:19
less entitled to sort of intrude in that
  • 00:17:21
marriage so it's very admirable that the
  • 00:17:23
couple got married without any help from
  • 00:17:25
their families so they go through with
  • 00:17:27
their marriage after the marriage mom
  • 00:17:28
    andlaw calls up
  • 00:17:34
    daughter-in-law like aren't you you're
  • 00:17:36
    doing the most
  • 00:17:41
basically how could you not even pay
  • 00:17:43
even just a penny to take my son and
  • 00:17:45
    live with
  • 00:17:48
him don't tell my son but you need to
  • 00:17:51
    send me
  • 00:17:52
$10,000 for the Yan price so the
  • 00:17:55
    Mother-in-law calls the daughter-in-law
  • 00:17:57
    secretly to demand
  • 00:18:00
$10,000 Mrs Kim didn't want to cause any
  • 00:18:02
trouble so she didn't tell her husband
  • 00:18:04
    and she sent her mom-in-law
  • 00:18:06
    $10,000 now I'm saying $10,000 Chan
  • 00:18:08
Manan is 10 million Korean W I think it
  • 00:18:11
    would be maybe like
  • 00:18:12
$8,000 so let me just clarify that but
  • 00:18:15
she did wind up telling her husband and
  • 00:18:17
the husband asked the mom and the mom
  • 00:18:19
was like well I already called the other
  • 00:18:21
in-laws and then you know I sent them
  • 00:18:23
some stuff too just without telling you
  • 00:18:24
but even still that's crazy like your
  • 00:18:27
son and daughter got married without
  • 00:18:28
asking you guys for any they just got
  • 00:18:30
married so you're calling up these
  • 00:18:32
people and saying I deserve money
  • 00:18:33
because they got married that is such
  • 00:18:36
old school thinking and so disrespectful
  • 00:18:39
to go behind your son and daughter's
  • 00:18:41
back to like get money from people
  • 00:18:44
because they got married on their own
  • 00:18:46
but even still Mrs Kim carried on and
  • 00:18:48
she got pregnant on their honeymoon they
  • 00:18:51
are having a honeymoon baby in Korean
  • 00:18:54
the word is honeymoon baby they have the
  • 00:18:56
same word like in English honeymoon baby
  • 00:18:58
you just say it with a Korean accent
  • 00:19:00
honeymoon baby and everybody knows what
  • 00:19:01
you're talking about so mom-in-law goes
  • 00:19:03
to visit daughter-in-law and she says
  • 00:19:05
hey even though you're pregnant you soon
  • 00:19:06
need to cook my son three meals a day
  • 00:19:09
and at night if you get hungry or have
  • 00:19:10
cravings or whatever don't send him out
  • 00:19:12
to like go get you stuff like don't
  • 00:19:14
bother him with that don't go asking him
  • 00:19:16
to buy you this and that while you're
  • 00:19:17
pregnant Mrs Kim didn't say whether or
  • 00:19:19
    not she followed her mother-in-law's
  • 00:19:21
directions she just moves directly on to
  • 00:19:24
a couple days before the birth so anyway
  • 00:19:27
they're a few days away from the birth
  • 00:19:28
    birth and suddenly there's complications
  • 00:19:30
with the birth now Mrs Kim doesn't tell
  • 00:19:33
us exactly what those complications were
  • 00:19:35
but her husband Mr Kim rushed her to the
  • 00:19:37
hospital and at the hospital the doctor
  • 00:19:40
says you guys need to have an emergency
  • 00:19:42
C-section I guess for whatever reason
  • 00:19:44
probably Mr Kim called his mom and had
  • 00:19:46
her come to the hospital with them but
  • 00:19:48
    mother-in-law comes into the hospital
  • 00:19:49
and says you cannot have a C-section
  • 00:19:53
they're literally at the hospital in an
  • 00:19:54
emergency situation the doctor is saying
  • 00:19:57
we have to do a C-section and the
  • 00:19:58
mom-in-law is coming in saying no you
  • 00:20:00
cannot her reasoning is that when you
  • 00:20:03
have a natural birth the baby is smarter
  • 00:20:06
and more healthy so the mom-in-law says
  • 00:20:08
we need to go to another hospital well
  • 00:20:10
they will let us do a natural birth you
  • 00:20:12
know typically in an emergency like this
  • 00:20:14
we want to care more for the mom's
  • 00:20:15
health than maybe the possible health of
  • 00:20:17
the future baby I know that that sounds
  • 00:20:18
    horrible but typically in hospital
  • 00:20:20
    situations they're thinking about the
  • 00:20:21
mom's life right how do we make sure the
  • 00:20:23
mom's life is safe but it seems like
  • 00:20:25
that mom-in-law is only interested in
  • 00:20:27
the baby she's like I don't care if
  • 00:20:29
you're healthy or not or if it's good
  • 00:20:30
for you or not or whatever emergency
  • 00:20:31
you're going through losing blood or
  • 00:20:33
whatever okay you just need to have a
  • 00:20:34
natural birth cuz that's better for the
  • 00:20:36
baby thankfully this is one of the times
  • 00:20:37
where the husband sort of stood up and
  • 00:20:39
said okay Mom you need to head out right
  • 00:20:41
because this is an emergency like I
  • 00:20:43
don't know if the wife could die or
  • 00:20:45
whatever Mrs Kim didn't say what the
  • 00:20:46
issue was but it's like okay okay you
  • 00:20:49
need to go need to go so he sent the mom
  • 00:20:52
out and they wound up having a c-section
  • 00:20:54
and delivering a healthy baby boy and
  • 00:20:56
typically in Korea when babies are born
  • 00:20:58
right away you don't actually have to
  • 00:21:00
have a name and birth certificate you
  • 00:21:01
just do that typically within one month
  • 00:21:03
of birth and so we also didn't have a
  • 00:21:06
name for one of our kids uh right at
  • 00:21:09
Birth either um and another reason why
  • 00:21:11
they do that is because a lot of people
  • 00:21:13
at Birth when they get the names they
  • 00:21:14
actually go to a lot of people are
  • 00:21:16
superstitious still so they'll go to
  • 00:21:19
monks or other sort of people who do
  • 00:21:21
tarot type of things and they'll go to
  • 00:21:24
them and give them the baby's date and
  • 00:21:26
time of birth and then they will go and
  • 00:21:28
find a lucky name for them like in Korea
  • 00:21:31
a lot of people have Superstition around
  • 00:21:32
name like choosing a name determines
  • 00:21:34
your future even to the point where if
  • 00:21:36
people go to a fortune teller and they
  • 00:21:39
tell them that their current name is not
  • 00:21:40
lucky and they need to change their name
  • 00:21:41
they will change their name even you
  • 00:21:44
guys I don't know if you follow me on
  • 00:21:45
Instagram you know years ago uh when I
  • 00:21:47
was first training to like do
  • 00:21:49
competitions and stuff my trainer she
  • 00:21:51
actually did that um like two years ago
  • 00:21:53
she was like you know I was told that
  • 00:21:54
this name is not lucky and that my son's
  • 00:21:56
name is not lucky so she changed her
  • 00:21:58
name and and her son's name based on
  • 00:21:59
what the fortune teller said so it's
  • 00:22:02
very common for people to not have names
  • 00:22:03
for their kids like right at Birth but
  • 00:22:05
Mr and Mrs Kim decided when they named
  • 00:22:07
their kids that they were going to take
  • 00:22:09
one syllable from Mr Kim's name one
  • 00:22:11
syllable from Mrs Kim name put it
  • 00:22:13
together and that was what they were
  • 00:22:15
going to name their baby typically in
  • 00:22:16
Korea people's name have two syllables
  • 00:22:19
plus the last name so three syllables
  • 00:22:21
total so that actually sounds like a
  • 00:22:22
good idea I think me and moon should
  • 00:22:24
steal that if we have a third kid do you
  • 00:22:26
think the Mother-in-law liked the name
  • 00:22:28
no ho ho she said guys I already went to
  • 00:22:31
a monk and I got a name chosen for us
  • 00:22:35
that name is Pac bong Pai I've been in
  • 00:22:37
Korea for quite some time so just upon
  • 00:22:39
hearing that name I know that it's a
  • 00:22:41
very old people name it doesn't really
  • 00:22:44
fit with current society and that kid is
  • 00:22:46
going to be mocked in school if he has
  • 00:22:48
that name so this is another one of the
  • 00:22:50
situations where the couple put their
  • 00:22:51
foot down they were like okay no we are
  • 00:22:53
not naming our kid P okay we're going to
  • 00:22:57
name our kid blah blah blah so the
  • 00:22:58
    Mother-in-law was Furious that they
  • 00:23:00
weren't going to name their kid
  • 00:23:04
P very dramatically she says if you
  • 00:23:07
don't name your kid this your house is
  • 00:23:09
going to fall basically I guess the monk
  • 00:23:12
said this is a lucky name for this child
  • 00:23:14
and if this child is not named that
  • 00:23:15
you're going to have bad luck basically
  • 00:23:17
is what she's saying so that was another
  • 00:23:19
big issue that the mom-in-law put up a
  • 00:23:21
huge fight with with the name but
  • 00:23:22
obviously did not name their kid bomai
  • 00:23:24
nobody who's my age here in Korea would
  • 00:23:27
probably name their kid that so fast
  • 00:23:28
forward a little bit later um Mrs Kim's
  • 00:23:31
mom lives in the countryside and she
  • 00:23:35
made a whole bunch of Mrs Kim's favorite
  • 00:23:37
dishes and Mrs Kim was out I believe at
  • 00:23:39
work mom-in-law was at the house and um
  • 00:23:43
Mrs Kim's mom came up from the
  • 00:23:45
countryside probably took a couple hours
  • 00:23:47
and she brought a whole bunch of side
  • 00:23:49
dishes and she told Mrs Kim her daughter
  • 00:23:51
I brought all these side dishes for you
  • 00:23:52
they'll be waiting for you when you get
  • 00:23:54
home so Mrs Kim is at work and she's
  • 00:23:56
thinking about her mom's cooking and
  • 00:23:57
    she's like
  • 00:23:59
I just can't wait to have my mom's
  • 00:24:00
cooking she gets home she opens the
  • 00:24:05
refrigerator none of the mom's food that
  • 00:24:08
she brought is there so she asked the
  • 00:24:09
mom-in-law Hey where's the food that my
  • 00:24:12
mom brought up from the countryside I
  • 00:24:13
    cook
  • 00:24:15
all oh I threw all that food
  • 00:24:20
away I'm going to give you money so you
  • 00:24:22
can go buy the ingredients but you need
  • 00:24:25
to remake that food daughter-in-law Mrs
  • 00:24:27
cam is like um excuse me and a fight
  • 00:24:30
ensued she's like why would you do that
  • 00:24:32
and the mom-in-law is like because there
  • 00:24:33
was a hair in it Mrs cim is like well
  • 00:24:35
you can take the hair out why would you
  • 00:24:37
throw all the food away mom-in-law is
  • 00:24:38
like that food is dirty then mom-in-law
  • 00:24:40
gets really heated because I think this
  • 00:24:42
is the first time daughter-in-law really
  • 00:24:43
stepped up to her and like gave her a
  • 00:24:45
piece of her mind but mother-in-law
  • 00:24:47
starts like pushing her face you know
  • 00:24:49
when some people are talking they're all
  • 00:24:51
in your face they're like hey like hey I
  • 00:24:54
said this and she's just going off on
  • 00:24:57
Mrs Kim she's saying how dare you talk
  • 00:24:58
to me like that your parents must not
  • 00:25:00
have taught you anything and she's just
  • 00:25:02
pushing Mrs Kim's head right there so
  • 00:25:04
Mrs Kim in an effort to get her to stop
  • 00:25:06
pushing her head back sort of does a
  • 00:25:07
    slapping motion and she accidentally
  • 00:25:10
slaps the mom-in-law in the face just
  • 00:25:13
ever so lightly while she's pushing the
  • 00:25:14
    hand back and mom-in-law
  • 00:25:16
flips she hits Mrs Kim her
  • 00:25:20
daughter-in-law in the face so hard that
  • 00:25:22
her glasses fly off and she just keeps
  • 00:25:25
on hitting her and then mother
  • 00:25:28
mother-in-law goes into the trash can
  • 00:25:31
gets the food that she threw away gets
  • 00:25:34
food out of the trash can starts
  • 00:25:35
throwing it all around the house she's
  • 00:25:37
legit having the Tantrum of her life and
  • 00:25:40
daughter-in-law is not hitting her back
  • 00:25:42
or anything she's just sort of okay you
  • 00:25:44
know it was an accident I didn't mean to
  • 00:25:45
punch her in the face but even still
  • 00:25:47
after she accidentally hit her in the
  • 00:25:49
face mom-in-law proceeds to actually hit
  • 00:25:51
her up like in her face like actual
  • 00:25:54
violence so then the husband comes home
  • 00:25:56
    mom-in-law starts crying oh
  • 00:25:59
daughter-in-law hit me in the face like
  • 00:26:02
that and the husband's like what how
  • 00:26:04
dare you hit my mom you get on your
  • 00:26:06
knees right now and you beg for
  • 00:26:08
forgiveness how dare you do that and
  • 00:26:11
then Mrs Kim is like um no sir so Mr Kim
  • 00:26:14
grabs his mom's hand and proceeds to
  • 00:26:17
leave the people in the comment section
  • 00:26:20
were going crazy like what what is wrong
  • 00:26:24
like with that husband but even the MC
  • 00:26:26
and stuff was like yeah this seems like
  • 00:26:28
a situation where you wouldn't really be
  • 00:26:29
able to get out of it seems like he's
  • 00:26:31
going to continue to just be on the side
  • 00:26:33
of his mom for everything and while I do
  • 00:26:36
understand listening to a situation like
  • 00:26:38
    that where somebody like accidentally
  • 00:26:40
hit your mom could be jarring for a lot
  • 00:26:41
of people in a society where you know
  • 00:26:45
things are so hierarchal but the fact
  • 00:26:46
that it was overlooked at the mom
  • 00:26:48
actually went ham Rambo on her but like
  • 00:26:51
with a fist instead of a gun punching
  • 00:26:53
everything and through food all around
  • 00:26:55
the house that he just lets that go and
  • 00:26:57
it's just the wife's fault and only she
  • 00:26:58
    needs
  • 00:26:59
to apologize like everybody was going
  • 00:27:02
crazy this video has over 3,000 comments
  • 00:27:05
    and people were
  • 00:27:07
like the mom-in-law just needs to live
  • 00:27:11
with her son forever why would you take
  • 00:27:13
    someone's precious daughter and cause
  • 00:27:15
her so much grief and it has 3,000 likes
  • 00:27:19
and somebody's like uh yeah a husband
  • 00:27:21
like that is not a husband that you
  • 00:27:23
could believe in and have faith in
  • 00:27:25
definitely needs to get a divorce 3,500
  • 00:27:27
l somebody was saying like what I was
  • 00:27:29
saying girl you shouldn't have got
  • 00:27:31
married like who when they first meet
  • 00:27:34
you would call you yah and no like use
  • 00:27:36
that like informal language and there's
  • 00:27:38
a lot of people saying that they had
  • 00:27:39
    similar situations with their
  • 00:27:41
    mother-in-law there's a lot of people on
  • 00:27:42
there that are like they had similar
  • 00:27:43
    situations like with their mom-in-law
  • 00:27:45
and stuff like that and it's so sad that
  • 00:27:47
like even to this day there's still such
  • 00:27:49
extreme cases um of that going on but I
  • 00:27:53
think this after this next Generation it
  • 00:27:55
will most likely like die out a lot
  • 00:27:58
so I have faith that the next generation
  • 00:28:00
of parent children relationships will be
  • 00:28:02
much more healthy Korea is making a big
  • 00:28:04
effort to educate and teach Korean moms
  • 00:28:07
and- laws I've come across some TV shows
  • 00:28:10
where they literally sat down Korean mom
  • 00:28:11
in-laws and they're like okay this is
  • 00:28:13
how you treat your children in marriage
  • 00:28:15
and I think just overall on Korean TV
  • 00:28:18
shows and like talk shows when they
  • 00:28:20
bring these stories on everyone is sort
  • 00:28:22
of telling the mom- in-laws you can't do
  • 00:28:23
that you can't be that way so it is
  • 00:28:26
changing a lot I think people are
  • 00:28:27
starting to take notice of like mental
  • 00:28:29
health and stuff like that and there's a
  • 00:28:30
lot of programs like geared toward
  • 00:28:32
helping people's mental health um it's
  • 00:28:35
still kind of taboo to talk about mental
  • 00:28:37
health or to say that obviously this
  • 00:28:39
person is not mentally healthy they need
  • 00:28:40
help um so hopefully as time goes on
  • 00:28:45
things will change and get better and we
  • 00:28:47
will have less and less of these kind of
  • 00:28:50
    insane mom-in-law stories there are
  • 00:28:51
still so many stories out there um but
  • 00:28:55
today I just wanted to share these two
  • 00:28:57
um this video was quite long already um
  • 00:29:00
but if there are some videos topics but
  • 00:29:02
if there are some video topics that you
  • 00:29:03
want me to cover or some things that
  • 00:29:05
you've heard that are happening in Korea
  • 00:29:07
and you want me to share information
  • 00:29:08
about it then let me know down below if
  • 00:29:10
you know of some crazy stories that you
  • 00:29:13
want me to share or talk about it
  • 00:29:14
doesn't necessarily have to be related
  • 00:29:16
to Korea and life in South Korea I think
  • 00:29:18
because I'm here in Korea and you guys
  • 00:29:20
are interested in Life in Korea that's
  • 00:29:22
kind of where we can start but I'm
  • 00:29:23
hoping that in the future we can just
  • 00:29:25
talk about more and other things maybe
  • 00:29:27
even besides Korea so let me know if
  • 00:29:29
there are some things that you want me
  • 00:29:30
to talk about or things that you wish
  • 00:29:32
for me to change in these type of videos
  • 00:29:35
um typically my videos have a lot of
  • 00:29:36
editing and music and stuff so this is
  • 00:29:38
new to me to sort of be doing a more
  • 00:29:40
podcast Style video also so if there are
  • 00:29:43
some things you would like to see change
  • 00:29:45
in the video or some things that you
  • 00:29:47
would like for me to do then just let me
  • 00:29:49
know because these videos are also just
  • 00:29:51
sort of like a trial for me as
  • 00:29:53
