[Music]
00:00:49
in 2013 when dr. Angela D passed away
00:00:55
there was this sort of creating a
00:00:58
memorial for him to kind of celebrate
00:01:01
his memory
00:01:02
and we all along with all the family
00:01:06
members we got together at this place
00:01:08
and we were looking at alternative sites
00:01:10
because there was a lot of options
00:01:12
available all across to choose the best
00:01:14
place but out of several options finally
00:01:19
we chose onto this particular site and
00:01:22
there are a lot of reasons for for that
00:01:25
one of the main reasons was when used to
00:01:28
sit and work in his lab which he was
00:01:30
extremely passionate about about his
00:01:33
laboratory we would have some of his
00:01:36
guest guest scientist and we would take
00:01:40
them for a lunch to his farmhouse which
00:01:42
is just behind and he would actually
00:01:45
take this path from his lab walking
00:01:48
around walking through these Ashoka tree
00:01:50
Avenue and right up to the farmhouse so
00:01:54
we thought back to that path has to be
00:01:57
sort of respected the memories along
00:02:00
that path have to be respected and at
00:02:03
the end of this Avenue there is one
00:02:05
people treat the people tree is called
00:02:08
Bodhi tree which is a symbol of
00:02:09
knowledge and when we would take some of
00:02:13
these scientists along he would actually
00:02:15
talk about that Bodhi tree so he was
00:02:17
quite attached to that and that became a
00:02:21
important reference point for us the
00:02:25
second thing was this grid of goober
00:02:28
trees and the beautiful thing about this
00:02:31
goalball trees which keeps changing as
00:02:33
for the seasons at one time it is all
00:02:36
fed with all white flowers then suddenly
00:02:40
all the flowers go off and you have very
00:02:42
barren kind of a landscape
00:02:44
then suddenly again it turns totally
00:02:46
green so over the seasons you have these
00:02:49
different kind of a scenario different
00:02:52
kind of ambience which would happen
00:02:54
that was the second aspect to it the
00:02:57
third one was the row of palm trees
00:03:00
royal pumps and they almost form the
00:03:04
wall along one axis then we had these
00:03:09
open ground which we could use it for
00:03:12
larger functions and lastly this large
00:03:16
avenue of trees along the main road at
00:03:21
that particular time the boundary wall
00:03:24
was at the edge of the road so that
00:03:28
became one more reference for us so we
00:03:33
wanted to use all that energy which is
00:03:35
there in the site you know to develop
00:03:37
something which could evoke dr. Brady's
00:03:41
memories now talking about dr. Vedas I
00:03:44
was fortunate enough to know him for a
00:03:48
long time and he if you see his
00:03:53
childhood it comes from a very humble
00:03:57
background in one of the villages in in
00:04:02
Andhra Pradesh and his father used to
00:04:06
grow turmeric plants and used to give
00:04:09
medicine to odd in the village and
00:04:13
that's how he got interested in medicine
00:04:15
and then he happened to establish one of
00:04:18
the largest you know pharma industry in
00:04:21
India so so this is the complete kind of
00:04:24
a growth story there are a lot of
00:04:26
landmarks on the way lot of milestones
00:04:29
we achieved but his passion was always
00:04:31
about discovery so it's about
00:04:34
discovering things it's about motivating
00:04:37
youngsters at the same time when you
00:04:40
know him as a person
00:04:41
he was very childlike a passionate
00:04:45
person you know very very transparent
00:04:47
you can actually see through him and he
00:04:50
had a very infectious laugh he would
00:04:52
laugh like a child now all these aspects
00:04:55
we wanted to capture while designing a
00:04:57
memory
00:04:57
and wanted all that all those those
00:05:01
energies to come into this space so we
00:05:05
started reacting to each and every
00:05:07
element which is which is here one of
00:05:11
the first thing was we had to look to
00:05:15
locate the ashes where those could be
00:05:19
placed and that would actually become
00:05:21
the relic the samadhi kind of a feature
00:05:23
so and that had to be done very fast
00:05:26
within within some 15 days so so there
00:05:30
was urgency in taking some design
00:05:32
decisions for us so so we did some very
00:05:37
initial kind of concepts in terms of how
00:05:40
those place will feel like and finally
00:05:43
we establish that place where actually
00:05:47
that void is we were talking about the
00:05:51
presence of absence because we want his
00:05:55
memory to stay and his absence to be
00:05:57
felt so that's why the idea of a wild
00:05:59
came in and we started with the idea of
00:06:02
water actually because that's something
00:06:04
which is so tranquil it has a quality of
00:06:08
reflection you know which no other
00:06:10
material in the nature has as much as as
00:06:14
much as the water where you can see the
00:06:17
reflection you see the movement you see
00:06:18
the the glimmer kind of a thing onto it
00:06:22
so so we place this entire stretch of
00:06:26
water body which culminates into that
00:06:29
void and that water body actually comes
00:06:34
out so before you enter the place you
00:06:37
can almost touch that water you can feel
00:06:39
the water so even before entering you
00:06:42
are establishing the contact across and
00:06:44
that was important for us
00:06:48
the secondly the idea of discovery had
00:06:51
to be emphasized so you don't enter the
00:06:55
complex directly you sort of come in
00:06:58
directly you walk across and then you
00:07:00
see the entire ambience to these
00:07:02
different openings and you again restore
00:07:05
the whole place so there is a sense of
00:07:08
discovery which happens within the whole
00:07:10
formation of the of the plan then this
00:07:16
Ashoka Cree Avenue the walk that he used
00:07:21
to take that actually symbolizes his
00:07:25
evolution right from childhood so it
00:07:27
starts with very rough stones then it
00:07:32
becomes slightly more slightly becomes
00:07:35
semi polished they then they become
00:07:37
polished and then they become grass and
00:07:39
that's how this whole life kind of
00:07:44
evolved because after reaching a point
00:07:47
after reaching all those milestone or
00:07:50
during that time his philanthropic life
00:07:53
sort of comes to comes forward and you
00:07:58
realize he starts giving so much you
00:08:00
know and that idea of giving idea of
00:08:03
sort of distributing not just the
00:08:08
knowledge but the wealth for the
00:08:10
well-being of the society that was
00:08:13
something which was very very important
00:08:15
so so you see the roughness which sort
00:08:19
of slowly changes and becomes grass
00:08:22
becomes nature the same thing happens
00:08:26
when you are when this wall around the
00:08:29
the Samadhi again it starts as a very
00:08:33
low wall becomes bigger becomes still
00:08:37
bigger and then it finally becomes this
00:08:39
row of trees so again we are talking
00:08:41
about starting from the low becoming
00:08:44
less you know establishing larger goals
00:08:46
and finally meeting the nature now if
00:08:50
when you when you when you see these
00:08:53
again there is a void in the in that
00:08:57
wall exactly in line with that void
00:09:01
which happens into the water now that
00:09:03
when you stand in the axis and look at
00:09:06
it that word gets reflected into the
00:09:08
water and it sort of creates this long
00:09:11
vertical line which is which is actually
00:09:15
the sense that we are missing here maybe
00:09:18
you know that it's a kind of against the
00:09:22
same word I am using the presence of
00:09:23
absence and then from there you start
00:09:26
with one opening the opening start
00:09:29
increasing become 2/3 and they become
00:09:31
larger and larger and it's talking about
00:09:36
the life starting small and becoming big
00:09:39
in always that becoming a team becoming
00:09:43
taking people along but at the same time
00:09:46
during the night
00:09:47
all these openings get lit up and they
00:09:51
start becoming like stars and it starts
00:09:55
with a smaller one star more stars and
00:09:57
finally it reaches the sky till it you
00:10:00
know with actual stars so so
00:10:03
symbolically we are sort of trying to
00:10:05
link that entire aspect to the larger
00:10:10
context the next one was about the
00:10:16
[Music]
00:10:18
depicting heads of milestone in life now
00:10:23
that's why we work with different
00:10:25
different people and other designers the
00:10:30
elephant design they are this kind of
00:10:33
design that entire entire setting so we
00:10:38
have this entire display which happens
00:10:40
across which is like one spine and
00:10:43
that's where you sort of look through
00:10:45
his achievements the landmarks the big
00:10:48
you know and and some of the collection
00:10:51
some of the some some of the objects
00:10:54
which were dear to him and that
00:10:56
culminates into a room which which is a
00:10:59
replica of the of the office room which
00:11:02
he used to use where there are some of
00:11:05
the scribble
00:11:05
ketchup and which are there on some of
00:11:07
the glass board so you actually feel is
00:11:10
present there when you and this entire
00:11:13
stage culminates into that room then we
00:11:19
have the main walkway which happens
00:11:23
along the main road now as I said
00:11:25
earlier the the fencing or the boundary
00:11:30
was along the road but we wanted the
00:11:34
scientists specially the young
00:11:35
scientists to walk along that path and
00:11:38
it's a long stretch if you see so what
00:11:41
we did is we moved that that boundary
00:11:44
and we created a transparent green wall
00:11:48
now that transparent green wall again
00:11:50
symbolizes transparency of his character
00:11:54
you can as I said he was he was such a
00:11:56
transparent person and you can actually
00:11:58
look through him so symbolically this
00:12:01
green wall represents that and in that
00:12:04
entire walk you have his bike - good
00:12:10
bike which used to use as a youngster
00:12:13
which is kept at one end and then there
00:12:16
is the mercedes-benz which was very dear
00:12:18
to him one of his first one which is
00:12:21
kept at the other ring and as you walk
00:12:25
towards the Mercedes you climb up so
00:12:27
symbolically you sort of go higher as
00:12:31
you go to work and for a youngster it's
00:12:33
a it's a path which sort of energizes
00:12:38
them motivate them that anybody from any
00:12:41
small background could actually reach
00:12:44
very very high goals and as long as you
00:12:46
have that spirit within you have that
00:12:49
are you know motivation within you so as
00:12:52
you walk through there are there are
00:12:56
benches where a lot of inspirational
00:12:58
sports by different scientists are
00:13:00
engraved into it so as you walk through
00:13:03
that Avenue you sit onto those benches
00:13:07
read about it get energized you know you
00:13:10
know again get charged up and go back
00:13:13
and do some you know fascinating work
00:13:15
and that's the whole idea and as you
00:13:18
sort of walk
00:13:18
we have created one diagonal path and
00:13:21
those who a lot of them who work with
00:13:26
him who had very close association with
00:13:29
him so even if you don't step into this
00:13:32
place when you are taking a walk there
00:13:34
you just get a glimpse of this samadhi
00:13:36
from there and you sort of connect
00:13:40
yourself with with the with the police
00:13:44
and with him and then you continue your
00:13:46
walk and I think that is that's very
00:13:50
important you know to just get charged
00:13:52
all the time we added these mounds which
00:13:57
are smaller amounts just to create this
00:14:00
introverted space now this almost
00:14:03
becomes a very meditative kind of a
00:14:05
space I was talking about his laughs
00:14:09
which was very very infectious just to
00:14:13
remind you about the about that we have
00:14:16
hung a lot of these wind chimes which
00:14:19
you can hear in the background and when
00:14:21
you hear those wind chimes you sort of
00:14:23
remember that simile surely the kind of
00:14:26
laugh that he used to have and one of
00:14:29
the most important aspects of his life
00:14:32
was about cilantro
00:14:33
about giving and that had to be it had
00:14:37
to be expressed so we we started with
00:14:41
the idea of firm of a spouse or a spouse
00:14:44
almost like you know giving giving away
00:14:48
or either the knowledge or the wealth
00:14:51
and which he kept on doing all the time
00:14:54
and that when that water falls out from
00:14:58
the samadhi and it sort of spreads
00:15:00
across across that entire spine and gets
00:15:04
connected across the whole space one
00:15:10
more important thing that when you
00:15:12
actually experience that samadhi we
00:15:15
wanted to emphasize onto that void and
00:15:17
as you go in you sort of walk down and
00:15:21
when you walk down your eye level comes
00:15:25
closer to the water and the water being
00:15:28
treated with black granite stone it
00:15:32
becomes very reflective it's almost like
00:15:34
a black cube of water and then when you
00:15:38
go down and with your eye level is very
00:15:40
close to the water that's where the void
00:15:43
stands out and you can't see what is
00:15:46
within the void and and again there is a
00:15:49
sense of curiosity sense of loss and
00:15:52
that is very very evident when you take
00:15:54
that price reduction at the lower level
00:15:57
and then you come up again and
00:15:59
everything opens out during the design
00:16:02
process when we are clearing some of
00:16:05
these areas we discovered these few
00:16:08
younger silver oak trees and then we
00:16:12
started responding to that we call it a
00:16:15
philanthropic walk and the kind of
00:16:17
philosophy that he did all those details
00:16:22
about all those schemes and always all
00:16:24
returned there so you walk around there
00:16:26
you know discover that and then continue
00:16:29
your walk along this the along the
00:16:33
display area the display area we wanted
00:16:37
to separate it with the screen and in
00:16:40
fact we we spent a lot of time detailing
00:16:43
that out the screen using the granite
00:16:47
the same granite which which is used for
00:16:50
creating all these walls again we spend
00:16:54
a lot of time and you know getting that
00:16:56
right texture different kind of textures
00:16:59
different kind of horizontality to bring
00:17:02
the scale down and and the same stone is
00:17:05
used to create this jolly and in the
00:17:08
night it gets lit up and you you see
00:17:11
these different kinds of voids and it
00:17:13
almost creates a flame across when you
00:17:16
approach the project I was talking about
00:17:19
that sense of discovery which happens
00:17:23
but it happens with a kind of a method
00:17:26
we have three openings indicating three
00:17:31
accesses the first access is about the
00:17:33
display area the second axis is the
00:17:36
Ashoka path thought he used to take the
00:17:39
third one is the main axis which leads
00:17:41
to the Samadhi and
00:17:43
the void and the fourth axis is a
00:17:45
diagonal one which sort of as you walk
00:17:47
accidentally you come across and again
00:17:49
it's connected to the to the main shrine
00:17:52
so so there is a kind of a definition in
00:17:56
the sense of discovery as well and in
00:18:01
the night the whole scenario keeps
00:18:03
changing as the light falls down during
00:18:07
the daytime you have this filtered light
00:18:08
coming through these feeds and it's
00:18:10
almost like a canopy during the data but
00:18:14
the way in the night we sort of
00:18:17
accentuated some of these accesses we
00:18:21
worked with a lighting lighting
00:18:23
consultant called Linus and we we have
00:18:27
sort of accentuated some of these spots
00:18:30
and the entire canopy of please get let
00:18:34
up in the night so you almost sort of
00:18:38
create a space within within this is
00:18:41
kind of a space within space and that
00:18:44
gives a very very different character to
00:18:46
the to the entire ambience so so it's a
00:18:50
kind of a process of discovery there is
00:18:53
a meditative question as to the whole
00:18:55
thing and it's a place where you sit and
00:19:00
remember dr. Anjali
00:19:16
you
