- 00:00:39feel kind of disappointed when I was
- 00:00:41reading them in fact I was questioning
- 00:00:45if the intention of that video which was
- 00:00:47to provide my personal insights to why
- 00:00:50more and more drivers are buying EVS now
- 00:00:54well was this intention
- 00:00:57wrong and so between one thing to do a

- 00:02:05I've experienced quite a bit of what
- 00:02:07this car can offer but beyond the
- 00:02:10characteristics of the car itself I've
- 00:02:12also gone through some of the quirks of
- 00:02:14EV ownership uh that only owners not
- 00:02:18reviewers would experience now before I
- 00:02:21start I need to qualify that whatever I
- 00:02:23say in this video are my opinions based
- 00:02:26on my car ownership experiences and the
- 00:02:30subjective influences those experiences
- 00:02:32have on me okay with those out of the
- 00:02:35way right here
- 00:02:44goes now first disadvantage of owning an
- 00:02:47EV in Singapore takes place even before
- 00:02:50we drive the car out of the showroom
- 00:02:52that is the price now take for example
- 00:02:56this byd SE here the omv for8 which
- 00:03:00stands for the open market value is
- 00:03:03$38,000 now in layman terms uh that's
- 00:03:07the original price of the car that the
- 00:03:10dealer got it straight out from the
- 00:03:13factory or in the case of pis right the
- 00:03:16price that they bought from overseas
- 00:03:18Steelers or Distributors now $38,000 is
- 00:03:21considered mid-range high for cars in
- 00:03:24Singapore this places this SE Dynamic
- 00:03:27model way above uh Most Japanese and
- 00:03:30Korean sedans and even crossovers like
- 00:03:33the Honda cic P Cora Hundai uh Avante
- 00:03:39Mazda
- 00:03:40CX5
- 00:03:42Tiano Honda vasel and many more in fact
- 00:03:46some of the more premium Continentals
- 00:03:49like the boo XC 60s and uh AI A6 have
- 00:03:54omvs that are lower than the seal so EVS
- 00:03:58really come at a premium and for this SE
- 00:04:02right the price of the omv is closer to
- 00:04:05that of a BMW 3 Series or even a
- 00:04:09Mercedes
- 00:04:12cclass however there's a carette here
- 00:04:14and many car owners still don't know
- 00:04:16about this I'm referring to the EV early
- 00:04:19adoption incentive that our government
- 00:04:20gives coupled with the enhanced VES rate
- 00:04:24most if not all EVS are looking at
- 00:04:27upfront $40,000
- 00:04:29discount of the sticker price which
- 00:04:32means for many lower to Mid EVS like up
- 00:04:36to this byd SE the price we pay to drive
- 00:04:40it out of the showroom will be lower
- 00:04:42than many other petrol cars even many
- 00:04:46hybrid cars of similar omvs so at this
- 00:04:50point you might argue and ask is this
- 00:04:54High omv a real disadvantage of evv
- 00:04:56ownership well it isn't still we sell
- 00:05:00the car a number of years later I'll
- 00:05:03come to the resale value
- 00:05:09later next another big hurdle of EV
- 00:05:11ownership is the charging time now we
- 00:05:13don't talk about the newest EVS with
- 00:05:15stoppable batteries from Neo or those
- 00:05:18that have the golden Battery Technology
- 00:05:20from zika let's only talk about what we
- 00:05:23have today taking my byd seal here as an
- 00:05:27example so this car has a a maximum
- 00:05:30charging rate of 110 KW now with only a
- 00:05:3461 KW hour battery the theoretical time
- 00:05:38to charge from 0% state of charge to
- 00:05:41100% would be about 33 minutes but in
- 00:05:44the real world right this would never
- 00:05:47happen I've never tried charging from 0%
- 00:05:50before uh but I can personally vouch
- 00:05:52that with a 180 KW DC charger like this
- 00:05:56one I've clocked 10% to 100% in 44
- 00:06:04[Music]
- 00:06:07minutes this isn't slow by EV standards
- 00:06:09but to I car owners this is embarrassing
- 00:06:13and I get it because with my other
- 00:06:14Patrol SUV right even with a 60 little
- 00:06:17tank it would probably take at most like
- 00:06:205 minutes to pm to a f tank and leave
- 00:06:24and so not surprisingly so many of the
- 00:06:27comments that I got from the previous
- 00:06:29video is about the inconvenience of
- 00:06:32charging more so uh some others also
- 00:06:35added that there's not enough charges to
- 00:06:38serve all the EVS today in Ms let alone
- 00:06:41in 2030 when all cars here are
- 00:06:45EV I'm not going to address that point
- 00:06:47I'll just discuss about the speed of
- 00:06:50charging and yes I cannot disagree that
- 00:06:53charging is way slower than pumping
- 00:06:55Patrol therefore there is going to be a
- 00:06:58need to change our ownership habits from
- 00:07:01that of a purposeful pump uh to that of
- 00:07:04a charge when able what I mean is this
- 00:07:08now for Ev owners who drive around
- 00:07:10thinking that they have to purposely go
- 00:07:12uh pum up their batteries right uh years
- 00:07:15this 40 plus minutes of weight will be
- 00:07:18unproductive so there's a need to change
- 00:07:21our lifestyle to that of charging when
- 00:07:24convenience
- 00:07:25meaning when we drive to a mall to buy
- 00:07:29groceries or have lunch charge the car
- 00:07:33um when there is a charger at our
- 00:07:36workplace right charge the car even if
- 00:07:39we are going to a park on a Sunday
- 00:07:41morning for 2 hours stroll charge the
- 00:07:44car with AC Chargers an hour or two
- 00:07:47won't really feel the tank full but with
- 00:07:50frequent charge when able lifestyle
- 00:07:52patterns like this which to be honest is
- 00:07:55impossible when I drive my patrol car uh
- 00:07:58the charging time deliver
- 00:08:00will be a thing of the past but I like
- 00:08:02to address one more point and that's the
- 00:08:05type of residence that we are in now for
- 00:08:07landed owners right you have the best
- 00:08:09case scenario for Ev ownership not only
- 00:08:11is it going to be convenient for you
- 00:08:13charging is going to be so much cheaper
- 00:08:17for htb dwellers it isn't too bad with
- 00:08:20something like one in three car par in
- 00:08:22stock with charges sure they are not DC
- 00:08:25charges but you have the option of
- 00:08:27leaving your car to charge over night uh
- 00:08:30at the AC charger and even if you don't
- 00:08:32have a charger at your C out right
- 00:08:34chances are there are there's going to
- 00:08:36be one within 10 minutes of walk away
- 00:08:38but condo owners will be the real drag
- 00:08:42if you don't have charges in your car
- 00:08:45because I bet there will be many of you
- 00:08:48who won't want to park overnight at a
- 00:08:50neighboring htb mscp because of
- 00:08:53security or status so your only place to
- 00:08:58charge is at the the workplace or at a
- 00:09:00mall now take it from me I felt the same
- 00:09:03way because my condo didn't have charges
- 00:09:07yet on to the third disadvantage now and
- 00:09:09this might be trivial but it absolutely
- 00:09:12irks me now I'm talking about the full
- 00:09:15touchscreen interface I really miss
- 00:09:17exual buttons for Eon control and even
- 00:09:20for something as simple as the real Den
- 00:09:23now in this seal at the fastest I got to
- 00:09:26pull down a menu on the screen like this
- 00:09:30and click on the the Mis icon and then
- 00:09:34press the back icon to go back to where
- 00:09:37I was the controlling the icon is as bad
- 00:09:41with three or more clicks to achieve the
- 00:09:44temperature or fan speed that I want now
- 00:09:48sure there are shortcuts using three
- 00:09:49finger swipes like this but I still
- 00:09:53cannot remember the difference from a
- 00:09:55horizontal swipe to a vertical one and
- 00:09:58which direction is which
- 00:09:59and if you are seeing there are voice
- 00:10:01commands right High
- 00:10:05BD turn on the rear
- 00:10:09deister okay turning on rear
- 00:10:13defrost well I feel that they are just
- 00:10:15too slow so back to the touch screen
- 00:10:18this can sound funny to you but I belong
- 00:10:21to the group who absolutely cannot stand
- 00:10:24fingerprint marks on the screen so it
- 00:10:27takes incredible patience for me to
- 00:10:29control my OCD when my wife leaves uh
- 00:10:32fingerprints even her makeup residue

- 00:11:22inconveniences there's another con that
- 00:11:25is a big disadvantage to me and that's
- 00:11:27driving an EV po
- 00:11:32trips now for context prior to covid I
- 00:11:35drove on root trips with my family in
- 00:11:37Malaysia at least twice a year I've
- 00:11:39driven to pinang at the furest and for a
- 00:11:4210day trip around the peninsula at the
- 00:11:44longest clocking easily more than 2,000
- 00:11:47km for some trips now in my petrol cars
- 00:11:51then the thought of stopping to refi
- 00:11:54never crossed my mind but in an EV right
- 00:11:56doing a road trip isn't going to be a
- 00:11:58straightforward
- 00:11:59and in some instances might be even
- 00:12:07possible now let's take a simple weekend
- 00:12:10trip from Singapore to KL as a case
- 00:12:13study and in a petrol car like this one
- 00:12:16here right with a full tank we probably
- 00:12:18only need to refill when we reach KL and
- 00:12:21when the fun is over PP one or two more
- 00:12:23times to reach home I'm not so sure if
- 00:12:26that's possible in an EV at least for my
- 00:12:28SE
- 00:12:29while the charging Network in Singapore
- 00:12:31is very reliable I've seen many Chargers
- 00:12:34being unserviceable in Malaysia and they
- 00:12:36don't have as many as we have so
- 00:12:39potentially at a popular RNR stop the
- 00:12:42worst case scenario is that all the
- 00:12:43charges there are spits or occupied and
- 00:12:47at the best case scenario right uh it is
- 00:12:49a 30 minute downtime for a 20 to 80%
- 00:12:53charge as opposed to a 5minute patrol
- 00:12:56fuel up so for me unless I'm stopping
- 00:12:58for lunch that 30 minute break at the
- 00:13:01RNR is time lost at the
- 00:13:06[Music]
- 00:13:11destination so for this reason I'm not
- 00:13:13an advocate for e road trips in fact
- 00:13:16while I look forward to trying one maybe
- 00:13:18to KL I will only do that to prove a
- 00:13:20point the anxiety I and the family uh
- 00:13:24will have along the way will definitely
- 00:13:26be a mood killer now I'll still prefer
- 00:13:29to do road trips in a petrol car like
- 00:13:31this one

- 00:13:42anytime I'm very related to the previous
- 00:13:45point which is a big disadvantage for
- 00:13:47EVS is driving at high speeds now like
- 00:13:50all ice cars there is a sweet sport uh
- 00:13:54in terms of speed to maximize pel or
- 00:13:56battery efficiency now in many car like
- 00:13:59this one the speed is around 70 km to
- 00:14:03about 100 km/ hour depending largely on
- 00:14:07the number of Gears the car have and the
- 00:14:09gears ratio now in EVS certainly in my
- 00:14:12byd the most efficient fast speed seems
- 00:14:15to be around 70 to 80 km/ hour at this
- 00:14:19speed battery consumption is around 12
- 00:14:21to 15 Kow depending on the WID in the
- 00:14:24cabin but when I drive at higher speeds
- 00:14:27for instance at 110 km/ hour the power
- 00:14:32consumption Rises to 16 to 20 Kow now
- 00:14:37compared to an ice car EV certainly
- 00:14:40don't like to be driven fast at least
- 00:14:43when it comes to
- 00:14:44consumption a few weeks back in a
- 00:14:47Facebook group I saw a post where
- 00:14:48someone was asking how many charging
- 00:14:50stops does he need if he drives to KL at
- 00:14:54180 km/ hour in an app tree firstly
- 00:14:59don't drive at 180 com Nagi but this is
- 00:15:03really dangerous not only to yourself
- 00:15:05but other Road users but as uh
- 00:15:09importantly right at this speed Aran
- 00:15:11consumption will be perhaps in the 30
- 00:15:14kilow range maybe more so the battery
- 00:15:17range will effectively be half maybe
- 00:15:20even worse than that that's why my wife
- 00:15:24mainly uses the seal to fetch the kids
- 00:15:28uh and EV actually is more suited for
- 00:15:31start stop type of driving uh especially
- 00:15:34when compared to an ice car like this
- 00:15:36one but at high speed right I'm certain
- 00:15:40a petrol car has more range and can
- 00:15:43maybe be more economical

- 00:15:51even in any case let's move on to a more
- 00:15:53serious disadvantage and that's the road
- 00:15:55tax and insurance yes these are more
- 00:15:58expensive than if you own an ice car now
- 00:16:01just to give you a context on my road
- 00:16:03text on uh the bydc dynamic
- 00:16:07right so for 6 months it is
- 00:16:13$751 now it's slightly higher than a 2 L
- 00:16:16ice car in fact for the more affordable
- 00:16:18ATO tree the road tax is this high too
- 00:16:22but let me share how absurd the road Tex
- 00:16:24is for the performance model of the se
- 00:16:27you know the one that does zero to 100
- 00:16:29in 3.8
- 00:16:33seconds it is
- 00:16:36$2,800 for 6 months you know now in the
- 00:16:40car's lifetime you would have paid
- 00:16:43$556,000 just to put this car on the
- 00:16:46road now that's a price of another car
- 00:16:48actually minus the Coe of
- 00:16:51course this is really something I think
- 00:16:53is unfair to EV owners yes I sort of get
- 00:16:56the $700 of additional premium in our
- 00:16:59annual Road tax because we don't pay for
- 00:17:01fuel tax but charging Road tax by power
- 00:17:03output is absolutely rubbish now there
- 00:17:07are 3 lit turbo ice cars that can be
- 00:17:10considered with superc car performance
- 00:17:12but their Road tax is less than half of
- 00:17:14that
- 00:17:16$5,600 right for the seal performance
- 00:17:18model so really I think this is a big
- 00:17:21unfair punishment for many EV owners
- 00:17:23especially those who drive The more mass
- 00:17:26Market TI

- 00:17:38that I'm paying is at 1,300 plus if I
- 00:17:41remember correctly and this is nearly
- 00:17:43double of what I paid for my Mercedes
- 00:17:45GLC I understand that EVS are more
- 00:17:47costly to repair and the chances of a
- 00:17:49complete write off is higher but at
- 00:17:51Double the cost of a more expensive
- 00:17:53petrol car now I hope this higher
- 00:17:56premium is because of the current
- 00:17:57gestation period of the year TVs on the
- 00:17:59road and in one or two years time we can
- 00:18:02get better rates because we'll continue
- 00:18:04to be tied in to the small selection of
- 00:18:07insurance with markups due to the
- 00:18:09warranty of the
- 00:18:11car so far we have Ted most of the more
- 00:18:15common disadvantages of owning an EV
- 00:18:17I've saved the most talks about one for

- 00:19:04cannot reference resale values uh
- 00:19:06figures from you know other countries
- 00:19:08because quite a number of them have
- 00:19:10crazy depreciated uh depreciation value
- 00:19:13even uh especially within the first 1 to
- 00:19:163 years so what we can do is to compare
- 00:19:19the real data here in
- 00:19:22Singapore and so I went to script
- 00:19:24figures from SG Kat so let us uh analyze
- 00:19:28a few case studies starting from the byd
- 00:19:31ATO tree which has been sold since
- 00:19:352022 now a search on the internet
- 00:19:37suggests that the ATO 3 was introduced
- 00:19:39at a launch price of
- 00:19:42$178,000 in quarter
- 00:19:453222 today that car is priced at
- 00:19:48$135,000 on the market and let's say
- 00:19:51that the dealer eats $10,000 off the
- 00:19:54value which means the owner so it at
- 00:19:57$125 $5,000 so now the owner actually
- 00:20:02lost
- 00:20:03$53,000 in 2 and2 years or around 30%
- 00:20:07from the original price he paid now
- 00:20:10let's compare a hybrid car now which I
- 00:20:12will use the MAA CX5 here because they
- 00:20:16seem to be at around the same
- 00:20:20category again a search on the internet
- 00:20:23reveals that the price of these cars in
- 00:20:25uh in quarter 3 2022 right is quite
- 00:20:28similar to that of the at tree which is
- 00:20:30around
- 00:20:31$178,000 too so in SG Kat I found this
- 00:20:35one here from September 2022 asking for
- 00:20:40133,000 now supposedly the dealer also
- 00:20:42buys a car in at 10K below right uh so
- 00:20:45this Masa owner lost $55,000 in the same
- 00:20:502 and A2 years now this work out to be
- 00:20:52around 31% loss in the same period now
- 00:20:56let's go for one more car and this time
- 00:20:57round petrol SUV again at around the
- 00:21:00same price of
- 00:21:02$178,000 uh in mid
- 00:21:052022 we have the uh pel
- 00:21:0950008 and I found this one advertising
- 00:21:13at
- 00:21:14$120,000 since this is slightly older at
- 00:21:16around 2.7 years old right the owner
- 00:21:20lost

- 00:23:03to you know many ice cars or hybrid cars

- 00:23:21I reckon that its resale value will be a

- 00:23:26lower so yes EV resal value won't be
- 00:23:29good but it's probably not the worst

- 00:25:44do people wish to see ev drivers suffer

- 00:25:51chicken rice lovers saying that people
- 00:25:52who eat duck rice are wrong or in my

- 00:26:05you get the drift just because charging
- 00:26:07an EV is not as convenient as filling up

- 00:26:17lower it doesn't mean that EV ownership
- 00:26:19is a mistake or or maybe because you

- 00:26:25then all Chinese EVS must be dangerous
- 00:26:28and the batteries will kill the owners
- 00:26:30if they catch fire and the absolute
- 00:26:33worst one for me right because other
- 00:26:35people can afford to buy an EV then they
- 00:26:38have to be lackes who work for the
- 00:26:40government or sponsored by companies
- 00:26:43come on I mean what has it got to do
- 00:26:47with I my
- 00:26:50friends don't hit people who have money
- 00:26:54not everyone who is richer than us who
- 00:26:56can afford to buy buy a Mercedes a BMW
- 00:27:00or Porsche cheats other people's money
- 00:27:03many of them work really hard to get to
- 00:27:06where they are today yes some of them
- 00:27:09have Rich parents but even if I hit them
- 00:27:13because my parents are poor right will I
- 00:27:15become richer so if I don't agree with
- 00:27:19EES I'll just State My Views that I
- 00:27:21don't agree and present my case I
- 00:27:24wouldn't go around calling EV owners
