  • 00:00:03
    [Applause]
  • 00:00:07
    blooding good evening good
  • 00:00:10
evening uh my name is Jamar Youngblood
  • 00:00:12
I'm a proud nor native and Resident my
  • 00:00:15
family has been in this city for
  • 00:00:16
generations and I grew up moving from
  • 00:00:19
war to war chasing Section 8 housing
  • 00:00:21
with a single mother of six I shared
  • 00:00:24
this because I'm here to speak for the
  • 00:00:25
25% of newers living in poverty uh
  • 00:00:29
despite my early challenges I was still
  • 00:00:30
able to attend an ivy league university
  • 00:00:32
for grad school where I studied how
  • 00:00:34
    local governments operate across the
  • 00:00:37
world and I want to use this time to
  • 00:00:39
    discuss three major challenges facing
  • 00:00:41
our city and three solutions to solve
  • 00:00:43
them so here are the problems um in the
  • 00:00:47
last 20 years the cost of living has
  • 00:00:49
risen faster uh than wages which is
  • 00:00:52
forcing uh Native raisin out of our city
  • 00:00:55
    and property taxes have increased
  • 00:00:57
    substantially during the same period
  • 00:00:59
which adds more economic pressure on our
  • 00:01:02
residents the second problem is that in
  • 00:01:04
nor there's no correlation between hard
  • 00:01:07
work and escaping poverty so while nkers
  • 00:01:10
struggle to afford rent groceries and
  • 00:01:12
health care of the wealthiest members of
  • 00:01:14
our society continue to grow their
  • 00:01:16
wealth not because they work harder but
  • 00:01:18
because the system is structured to fun
  • 00:01:20
wealth upward so our current system is
  • 00:01:23
failing us so many residents um are here
  • 00:01:26
in norc and I think we all know it so
  • 00:01:28
lastly the city bu budget shows that we
  • 00:01:30
are spending more on Youth and Senior
  • 00:01:32
Services than ever before yet it doesn't
  • 00:01:35
seem that the taxpayers are getting
  • 00:01:37
their bank for their buck so the
  • 00:01:39
question is if the money is being spent
  • 00:01:41
why aren't the services improving so
  • 00:01:44
here's some solutions we are often gas
  • 00:01:46
lit and told that our economic system
  • 00:01:48
would fix everything that the market
  • 00:01:50
would balance itself and that the free
  • 00:01:51
    running economy would benefit everyone
  • 00:01:53
but we all know that the market has no
  • 00:01:56
conscience it does not care if single
  • 00:01:58
mothers are struggling to pay rent or
  • 00:02:00
    seniors cannot afford their medication
  • 00:02:02
so the market rewards the wealthy who
  • 00:02:04
seek to extract everything they can from
  • 00:02:06
the most vulnerable members of our
  • 00:02:08
society so knowing this our elected
  • 00:02:11
officials must evolve and I encourage
  • 00:02:13
you all to rethink your role in
  • 00:02:15
    protecting residents and improving our
  • 00:02:17
quality of life because many Outsiders
  • 00:02:20
only see norc as an opportunity to grow
  • 00:02:22
their wealth which is why we must
  • 00:02:24
establish a uniform agreement for all
  • 00:02:26
businesses that want to operate here
  • 00:02:28
this will protect us from those looking
  • 00:02:30
to exploit our city for their personal
  • 00:02:32
    gain setting clear expectations will
  • 00:02:34
attract the right businesses to nor I'm
  • 00:02:36
talking about the businesses that are
  • 00:02:38
committed to reinvesting in our city and
  • 00:02:40
growing alongside us I'm a tech
  • 00:02:43
entrepreneur who has built projectss for
  • 00:02:45
our city so when it comes to building a
  • 00:02:47
trust and relationship between City Hall
  • 00:02:48
and nework residents I know we can
  • 00:02:50
    leverage technology to keep residents
  • 00:02:52
informed and engage because even with my
  • 00:02:55
ivy league education navigating our city
  • 00:02:58
budget is challenging well but one thing
  • 00:03:00
is clear money has been allocated to
  • 00:03:02
help residents but so many say that they
  • 00:03:04
don't see the impact so before you all
  • 00:03:07
leave office next year we ask that you
  • 00:03:09
help us uncover where that money is
  • 00:03:11
going so we can ensure that the tax
  • 00:03:13
dollars are being used effectively and
  • 00:03:15
with that said I am introducing to the
  • 00:03:18
council the first version of an
  • 00:03:19
ordinance and a resolution designed to
  • 00:03:21
build trust between City Hall and the
  • 00:03:23
residents of n uh the ordinance called
  • 00:03:26
    the four transparency ordinance will
  • 00:03:28
allow residents to easily search online
  • 00:03:31
and see how their tax dollars are being
  • 00:03:32
spent and the resolution would give nor
  • 00:03:34
residents a voice in deciding how some
  • 00:03:36
of their tax dollars are allocated these
  • 00:03:39
ideas are not radical because they're
  • 00:03:41
already being used in places like
  • 00:03:42
Handover New Hampshire where I attended
  • 00:03:44
grad school they're also being used in
  • 00:03:46
Jersey City and New York City we need to
  • 00:03:49
catch up and we need to do it as soon as
  • 00:03:51
possible and lastly this message is for
  • 00:03:54
the Millennials and members of gen Z
  • 00:03:56
here in North Article 1 Section two of
  • 00:03:58
New Jersey Constitution states that the
  • 00:04:00
people control the government so now
  • 00:04:03
more than ever we need your energy to
  • 00:04:05
put that principle to test if we want
  • 00:04:07
nor to be a place where we all age
  • 00:04:10
comfortably and provide our children and
  • 00:04:11
    grandchildren with opportunities to
  • 00:04:13
better their lives we need at least
  • 00:04:15
3,000 of you to get involved to stay
  • 00:04:18
engaged and to demand more from our
  • 00:04:19
elected officials so do your part by
  • 00:04:22
    voting and supporting candidates who
  • 00:04:24
would fight to protect you from the
  • 00:04:26
harms of our current economic system so
  • 00:04:28
thank you all for your time time and I
  • 00:04:30
would love to get this ordinance and
  • 00:04:31
resolution to you all and if anyone in
  • 00:04:34
the audience wants a copy I have an
  • 00:04:35
extra thank you thank you for your
  • 00:04:37
comments Sylvester if you can get a copy
  • 00:04:40
    of the ordinance thank you
