00:00:00
it's that time of year again when fungal
00:00:02
diseases
00:00:03
start to show up in the garden there are
00:00:05
many ways
00:00:06
to try and prevent them to keep them
00:00:08
from coming
00:00:09
but eventually in spite of all that some
00:00:12
will show up
00:00:13
however there are some things that you
00:00:15
probably already have
00:00:17
at home right now that will help save
00:00:19
your plants
00:00:20
so in this video i'm going to go over
00:00:22
prevention and home remedies that
00:00:24
actually
00:00:25
[Music]
00:00:28
work
00:00:31
hey i'm brian with next level gardening
00:00:33
if you're looking to join an
00:00:34
online garden community that offers tips
00:00:37
tricks
00:00:37
and support to help take your garden to
00:00:39
the next level
00:00:40
you're in the right place get started
00:00:42
now by clicking subscribe
00:00:44
and hit the bell so you never miss
00:00:45
anything now let's
00:00:47
get growing let me know in the comments
00:00:49
if you're starting to see some diseases
00:00:50
pop
00:00:51
up right now fungal diseases like mosaic
00:00:54
virus
00:00:55
rust verticillium wilt and of course our
00:00:58
favorite
00:00:59
powdery mildew also let me know what you
00:01:02
use
00:01:02
to prevent and treat these diseases so
00:01:05
over the next two weeks i'm going to be
00:01:08
working with the photographer
00:01:10
here in the garden to uh take pictures
00:01:13
for the book
00:01:14
so we've got a few photo sessions set
00:01:16
now
00:01:17
my biggest priority at this point is
00:01:20
keeping the garden
00:01:21
disease free right now it's looking at
00:01:24
its best
00:01:26
and i need to keep it that way so i am
00:01:28
going to be using
00:01:30
a ton of preventative strategies but i
00:01:33
also have some home remedies at the
00:01:35
ready
00:01:35
in case i see something start to crop up
00:01:38
so as always let's talk prevention
00:01:40
first now all of these diseases that i'm
00:01:42
going to talk about today
00:01:44
are fungal diseases so they're all
00:01:46
caused by
00:01:47
spores the first one is
00:01:50
mosaic virus now there are several types
00:01:53
of mosaic
00:01:54
virus that actually affect a wide
00:01:56
variety of crops but
00:01:58
usually they are going to present
00:02:00
themselves as
00:02:01
different color greens and yellows and
00:02:04
whites they're going to show up in
00:02:06
bands and stripes and blotches they're
00:02:09
gonna really look like
00:02:10
a mosaic or a stained glass and there
00:02:13
are three ways that this virus
00:02:15
spreads number one it's spread through
00:02:18
touch if you touch a plant that has
00:02:19
mosaic virus and then touch a plant that
00:02:21
doesn't
00:02:22
you yourself could be spreading that
00:02:24
virus so
00:02:25
wash your hands if you ever have to
00:02:27
touch a plant that has that virus
00:02:29
the second way is through aphids aphids
00:02:32
eating on one plant that
00:02:33
has it and then going to another plant
00:02:35
that doesn't have it that will spread
00:02:37
and the third way is actually seed borne
00:02:40
the virus is asleep
00:02:41
in the seed of the plant you plant the
00:02:44
seed the plant comes up
00:02:46
might look okay at first but eventually
00:02:48
that virus is going to show itself so
00:02:50
preventing seed borne really is don't
00:02:51
save seeds that
00:02:53
you know have that virus don't save
00:02:55
seeds from the plant that year
00:02:56
to the next year and then just buy your
00:02:58
seeds from
00:02:59
reputable sources for the aphid thing
00:03:02
we're going to go back to a companion
00:03:04
planting video that i did
00:03:06
and you want to plant plants that either
00:03:08
repel aphids
00:03:09
like members of the allium family onions
00:03:12
shallots garlic but also companion plant
00:03:16
with plants that
00:03:17
attract aphid predators such as ladybugs
00:03:20
and
00:03:21
lace wings and things like that and you
00:03:23
do that by planting
00:03:24
interplanting fennel daisies
00:03:28
dill all those plants are going to bring
00:03:31
in natural predators
00:03:32
of aphids so hopefully try to keep those
00:03:34
at bay
00:03:35
so i've got some dill planted right here
00:03:38
in with some of my peppers
00:03:39
i've got some daisies planted over there
00:03:42
i'm not a fan of fennel so i don't have
00:03:43
that so the next disease
00:03:45
is rust that's another fungal disease
00:03:48
and it's really easy to identify because
00:03:50
it looks like
00:03:51
rust it's orangy golden dusty
00:03:55
uh splotches that can actually be raised
00:03:58
they can start to disfigure the leaf
00:04:00
in a bad situation they can defoliate
00:04:03
the whole plant killing it
00:04:05
so to prevent that water from below drip
00:04:07
if possible but do not never spray the
00:04:09
leaves because that is going to
00:04:11
the splash is going to start spreading
00:04:14
that virus from one plant to the next
00:04:16
very quickly any rust leaves that you
00:04:19
see or stems
00:04:21
snip them off get them out of your
00:04:22
garden into the trash or destroy them
00:04:25
never leave any of these diseases you
00:04:28
know on a leaf or that you cut off and
00:04:29
leave on the ground you always got to
00:04:31
get them out of there to stop the spread
00:04:33
keep the leaves as dry as possible prune
00:04:35
some of the
00:04:36
the leaves and the interior of the plant
00:04:38
so you can kind of see through there or
00:04:40
know that you're
00:04:41
letting air get through there and kind
00:04:43
of drying off the leaves after a rain or
00:04:45
after all night long
00:04:47
and make sure you're growing them in
00:04:48
enough sun another way to prevent them
00:04:50
is by just simply growing
00:04:52
rust resistant varieties there's rust
00:04:55
resistant varieties of just about every
00:04:57
crop so look for those if you know you
00:04:58
have a problem with rust in your area
00:05:00
year to year another fungal disease that
00:05:03
is a little bit different
00:05:04
is verticillium wilt because it lives in
00:05:06
the soil
00:05:07
and not on the leaves and it grows
00:05:09
through the goes through the plant
00:05:10
systemically
00:05:11
cucumbers melons eggplant
00:05:15
different squashes tomatoes peppers
00:05:18
those are all going to be plants that
00:05:19
are affected
00:05:20
mostly by verticillium wilt and
00:05:22
unfortunately once
00:05:24
you have this in your plant once it goes
00:05:27
from the soil
00:05:28
up into the the roots and the stems and
00:05:30
leaves of your plant you cannot get rid
00:05:32
of it
00:05:32
now it may not kill the plant outright
00:05:35
and you don't need to quickly remove it
00:05:37
because as i said it's soil borne
00:05:39
so anything near it's probably going to
00:05:40
get it anyway
00:05:42
but you can continue to harvest from it
00:05:44
it might kill off part of the plant
00:05:46
usually it shows up on one side of the
00:05:48
plant for some reason and so the other
00:05:50
side
00:05:50
can keep going for a while so you don't
00:05:52
have to pull it out immediately
00:05:53
especially
00:05:54
especially if you have some things
00:05:55
fruiting see if you see if you can get
00:05:57
them to
00:05:58
mature and ripen and then you can pull
00:06:00
out the plant when it's done
00:06:02
the thing with verticillium wilt is you
00:06:04
really need to start the practice
00:06:06
of crop rotation don't grow
00:06:09
a one of those plants that i just
00:06:11
mentioned that are actually more
00:06:12
susceptible to verticillium wilt don't
00:06:14
grow those in that same location
00:06:16
for at least four more years you can
00:06:19
plant
00:06:20
uh plants in that area in those four
00:06:22
years that really aren't as affected
00:06:24
by verticillium wilt now the fourth one
00:06:28
is
00:06:28
powdery mildew and i'm not sure there's
00:06:30
a garden out there
00:06:31
that doesn't have some sort of powdery
00:06:34
mildew at some point during the year and
00:06:36
i'm not even sure that there's a plant
00:06:37
out there
00:06:38
that is naturally resistant to it you
00:06:40
know a type of plant powdery mildew
00:06:42
another fungal
00:06:43
disease these these diseases they the
00:06:45
spores come in
00:06:46
on the wind and then they usually are
00:06:49
perpetuated through
00:06:50
moisture through splashing that's mostly
00:06:54
how some of these
00:06:55
spread and so just like i was mentioning
00:06:56
with rust water from below
00:06:58
keep the leaves as dry as possible do a
00:07:01
lot of pruning
00:07:03
remove any affected leaves or stems get
00:07:06
them out of the garden
00:07:07
and don't compost these things as well
00:07:09
because if you don't have a hot compost
00:07:11
pile which
00:07:12
i think a lot of people probably don't i
00:07:14
don't mine is a cold
00:07:16
pile that will not kill those spores and
00:07:20
then you will just be adding them back
00:07:21
into your garden in the next year
00:07:23
prune off any leaves that you see and
00:07:24
usually it's going to be the older
00:07:25
leaves
00:07:26
and you know a lot of times this is in
00:07:27
my garden is seen on the cucurbits you
00:07:29
know squash melons things like that
00:07:31
um so keep keep an eye on those those
00:07:33
older leaves and prune them off
00:07:35
as soon as you see any type of uh damage
00:07:39
any type of disease but certainly any
00:07:40
type of mildew problems and they're
00:07:43
going to start out looking like someone
00:07:44
sprinkled
00:07:45
baby powder on the leaves powdery mildew
00:07:48
really takes hold when plants are not
00:07:51
growing
00:07:52
in a sunny enough location so
00:07:55
if it's a full sun plant which most
00:07:59
crops are they need at least six to
00:08:01
eight hours of direct
00:08:02
sunlight per day and that alone is going
00:08:05
to at least push off powdery mildew
00:08:07
until much later
00:08:08
in the season now if you've done all
00:08:10
these things
00:08:12
and one or more of these diseases except
00:08:14
for verticillium wilt which there is no
00:08:16
cure for
00:08:17
uh but one of the other three show up in
00:08:19
spite of everything you've done
00:08:21
and at least one powdery mildew probably
00:08:23
will there
00:08:24
are some things that you can use that
00:08:26
you already probably have around the
00:08:27
house
00:08:28
that will kill the fungal spores
00:08:31
but not kill all of the beneficial life
00:08:34
that you have
00:08:35
in your garden so remember verticillium
00:08:37
wilt once you've got it
00:08:38
there's no cure the other three let's go
00:08:41
over some home remedies that actually
00:08:42
work
00:08:43
one word of warning i'm starting with
00:08:45
though is in any of these solutions that
00:08:47
i'm going to tell you about
00:08:48
you always want to make sure that you do
00:08:51
a
00:08:51
test spray spray a few of the leaves
00:08:55
at the time of day that you're going to
00:08:56
be spraying all the leaves so you want
00:08:58
to make sure the sun and everything is
00:08:59
is
00:08:59
the same spray a few leaves wait 24
00:09:02
hours
00:09:03
and if everything looks okay then you
00:09:05
can move on and spray
00:09:06
the rest of your garden the first one is
00:09:08
baking soda baking soda is an
00:09:10
anti-fungal
00:09:12
in the garden you want to use three
00:09:13
tablespoons mixed into a gallon of water
00:09:16
put a few drops of dish soap in there to
00:09:18
help it stick to the leaves
00:09:19
and you want to spray the plants heavily
00:09:21
because it only kills spores that it
00:09:23
comes in direct contact with so
00:09:25
spray the tops and the bottoms of the
00:09:27
leaves all over the plant
00:09:28
milk also works milk is an anti-fungal
00:09:32
in that
00:09:33
and milk you want to spray on a sunny
00:09:35
day now
00:09:36
a lot of sprays you kind of want to do
00:09:39
the morning or the evening when the sun
00:09:40
is not so bright
00:09:42
but with milk it actually interacts with
00:09:44
the sunlight
00:09:45
to create free radicals on the surface
00:09:47
of the leaf and in that process of
00:09:49
creating those free radicals
00:09:50
the fungal spores are killed so in a
00:09:53
sprayer mix four parts
00:09:55
milk to six parts water shake it up
00:09:57
really well
00:09:58
and spray the plants thoroughly you can
00:10:00
also spray milk every two weeks
00:10:02
as a fungal preventative so when the
00:10:05
first spore lands on that leaf
00:10:07
if you've recently sprayed milk it will
00:10:09
be a part of the killing process
00:10:11
and you will never let it take hold
00:10:13
another choice is hydrogen peroxide the
00:10:15
good old three percent
00:10:17
brown bottle hydrogen peroxide you
00:10:19
probably have
00:10:20
under your bathroom sink or in your
00:10:21
medicine cabinet you want to use ten
00:10:23
tablespoons of three percent hydrogen
00:10:25
peroxide per gallon
00:10:27
of water and again spray the plants
00:10:29
thoroughly because
00:10:31
these solutions only kill when they come
00:10:34
in contact with the spores
00:10:36
if you use mouthwash you are basically
00:10:39
killing bacteria
00:10:41
in your mouth and that same solution of
00:10:44
mouthwash
00:10:44
will kill the spores of fungus on your
00:10:48
plants
00:10:48
generic ethanol based mouthwash
00:10:52
mixed with water so three parts
00:10:54
mouthwash
00:10:56
one part mouthwash to three parts water
00:10:58
in a sprayer
00:11:00
spray the plants thoroughly and the last
00:11:01
one very similar to mouthwash is vinegar
00:11:04
two to three tablespoons of vinegar per
00:11:07
gallon of water in a sprayer spray the
00:11:09
plants thoroughly
00:11:10
and that will help take care of the
00:11:11
funguses as well now
00:11:13
prevention again i'm gonna stress it it
00:11:16
is number one
00:11:17
but if it still happens anyway these
00:11:19
solutions should help
00:11:20
if you learned something please give the
00:11:22
video a thumbs up i would appreciate it
00:11:24
and uh if you haven't subscribed
