- 00:00:50um
- 00:00:51and we actually covered the issues on on
- 00:00:54business
- 00:00:55diplomacy technology regarding
- 00:01:02countries and so far a number of
- 00:01:05ambassadors
- 00:01:07expert and the CEOs have had a busy
- 00:01:10Korean University and have delivered a
- 00:01:13valuable
- 00:01:14Church in this program
- 00:01:17and this event is the first event in the
- 00:01:21fall semester and I'm
- 00:01:24truly privileged to have a very
- 00:01:28distinguished lecture from a very
- 00:01:32popular in Phoenix company
- 00:01:34Ethel but in English it will be we
- 00:01:38promise I care but but I think in
- 00:01:41Swedish is being here and I suppose a
- 00:01:45Korean student who will recognize the
- 00:01:47company as Ikea
- 00:01:48how many of you
- 00:01:50have never used in care before
- 00:01:59and that means
- 00:02:01at some point especially for students
- 00:02:05especially for students or yeah well
- 00:02:08when nowadays when we I need some
- 00:02:11support which is not that heavy but the
- 00:02:14casual but convenient and often times
- 00:02:17media is this very near you can order
- 00:02:20your online or you may visit uh yeah
- 00:02:24like applying a shopping and be careful
- 00:02:27sometimes you would get lost and spend
- 00:02:30two three hours easily there but at
- 00:02:33least a good thing is there always
- 00:02:35something to eat there too some
- 00:02:37restaurants in Indica so this is
- 00:02:41certainly but not just a furniture
- 00:02:43company but it was more of the lifestyle
- 00:02:47company I will
- 00:02:49cool and I'm today I'm privileged to
- 00:02:53have a Mr Frederick Johansson CEO and
- 00:02:58CSO Chief sustainability officer of Ikea
- 00:03:02Korea here at Korea University
- 00:03:06uh
- 00:03:09commission is
- 00:03:12truly the Ikea person you have a
- 00:03:16starting your career in 1996 at Ikea and
- 00:03:20well I spent 26 27 years in especially
- 00:03:26in international business side of ekrn
- 00:03:29worked in Sweden China
- 00:03:33friends and Korea now and nowadays get
- 00:03:36working as CEO and c s o
- 00:03:40uh
- 00:03:41of Korea the branch and uh the today's
- 00:03:46topic is about India's sustainability
- 00:03:50for the future oftentimes we are talking
- 00:03:54about now if we talk a lot about BSG and
- 00:03:59new kind of business model and also a
- 00:04:01new kind of corporate governance
- 00:04:03emphasizing environment and social value
- 00:04:08and transparent governments and import
- 00:04:11obma call it a sustainability so how to
- 00:04:14combine this sustainability and
- 00:04:17corporate governance
- 00:04:19and how to combine this value with a
- 00:04:23customer
- 00:04:24so maybe no doubt regarding this
- 00:04:29sustainability issues many
- 00:04:33many stories with it
- 00:04:35um
- 00:04:35have been the four Waters in enhancing
- 00:04:38this sustainability issues and agenda in
- 00:04:44in a different setting in international
- 00:04:47preparation so uh we will certainly we
- 00:04:51will see how
- 00:04:53sustainability is coming into the
- 00:04:56business arena with with wonderful place
- 00:05:00of India okay so uh without further with
- 00:05:03you uh let's please welcome uh Mr
- 00:05:09President Johan's third floor please
- 00:05:11welcome him a little big round
- 00:05:21thank you very much first of all for the
- 00:05:23kind introduction for the warm-up close
- 00:05:27so I assume it's pretty clear who I am
- 00:05:30but a few words that might be of
- 00:05:32interest
- 00:05:3326 years yes full time but I actually
- 00:05:36have 35 years in the company
- 00:05:39I worked nine years part-time during my
- 00:05:42high school and University years
- 00:05:44and
- 00:05:46I was actually here visiting this campus
- 00:05:49in
- 00:05:511995. there might be people here that
- 00:05:53weren't born at the time I was sitting
- 00:05:56there where you are sitting at another
- 00:05:58University in Seoul as an exchange
- 00:06:00student here
- 00:06:01and at the time we were not so many
- 00:06:04exchange students back then and we were
- 00:06:06then invited to visit some of the
- 00:06:08campuses of the other major universities
- 00:06:10so this is my first revisit here since
- 00:06:131995.
- 00:06:15and I can't say that I recognize very
- 00:06:17much maybe we came from a different
- 00:06:18entrance but it's anyway been very nice
- 00:06:20to be back
- 00:06:23so my love story with Korea started uh
- 00:06:25in 1995 and then I moved here then five
- 00:06:29years ago together with a wife and and
- 00:06:32kids
- 00:06:33and today I will bring you a bit on a
- 00:06:37journey explaining what we as secure
- 00:06:39have done and what we aim to do and I
- 00:06:43also think it's important to focus on
- 00:06:44the things that we have done because
- 00:06:46anybody can can make nice something okay
- 00:06:50yeah and anybody can make nice plans
- 00:06:53there's actually the action speaks
- 00:06:55louder than words it's also very
- 00:06:56important to see what maybe really
- 00:06:58accomplished as well
- 00:07:01and this is not intended in any way to
- 00:07:03be any propaganda
- 00:07:05we make lots of mistakes I think here we
- 00:07:09make lots of genuine mistakes and we
- 00:07:11hope that we are the first ones to
- 00:07:13apologize for what happens and directed
- 00:07:14by the mistakes done
- 00:07:16and after the presentation which would
- 00:07:19be I assume 30-35 minutes I look forward
- 00:07:21to the Q a and you don't have to be
- 00:07:24careful anything you want last week free
- 00:07:26draws if I cannot answer I will tell you
- 00:07:28so but I will do my best to answer
- 00:07:32you
- 00:07:33all right
- 00:07:36um I only saw one hand that had never
- 00:07:39been in contact with the KR but that
- 00:07:40that's okay and certainly you're nothing
- 00:07:43there I saw your hand and
- 00:07:47since three years back all CEOs or if
- 00:07:52you like country managers uh have a dual
- 00:07:54role it's CEO and c s o we have felt
- 00:07:59that sustainability is the future
- 00:08:01is not about
- 00:08:05the world because from our parents is
- 00:08:07actually about the world that we borrow
- 00:08:08from our children so we said that we
- 00:08:10can't delegate that responsibility in
- 00:08:13each and every country we need to need
- 00:08:14to have a CEO taking that as well to
- 00:08:16make sure that it gets all the energy
- 00:08:17and all the effort behind it to make
- 00:08:21sure that we become a lot better than
- 00:08:22we're and that we are a positive
- 00:08:24contribution to a better world
- 00:08:27if I then
- 00:08:30see
- 00:08:32voila and I want to start with the
- 00:08:35vision I think this is very important
- 00:08:36this is the reason why we exist that's
- 00:08:40about creating a better every life for
- 00:08:42the many people
- 00:08:44we do that in many ways One Way
- 00:08:46certainly you will see is throughout
- 00:08:49business idea where we offer people
- 00:08:51affordable good quality products to make
- 00:08:53their life at home better
- 00:08:55but we also do it in the sense of
- 00:08:57securing that our co-workers are
- 00:09:00respected and treated fairly all over
- 00:09:03the world
- 00:09:03and the Third Way We Do It Is by being a
- 00:09:06good neighbor security that people
- 00:09:07living close to Ikea that they get the
- 00:09:11support needed where appropriate and on
- 00:09:13top of that lots of donations I will
- 00:09:15talk a bit about that later to the most
- 00:09:17vulnerable people in the world
- 00:09:19but this is really important and I think
- 00:09:21it inspires me for 35 years now to stay
- 00:09:24with the company because it gives me a
- 00:09:26very clear sense of purpose it's not
- 00:09:29about making anybody Rich it's about
- 00:09:31being a good source in the world
- 00:09:34then we have the uh the business idea
- 00:09:36and this more explains the business as
- 00:09:39such so this is what we do and also the
- 00:09:42time
- 00:09:43but I rather want to focus on on the
- 00:09:46third part which is democratic design
- 00:09:49which explains how we do it
- 00:09:52and everything we do we aim to secure
- 00:09:55the whole these five parts
- 00:09:58all these five parts so foreign function
- 00:10:01for the sustainability and
- 00:10:04that they go hand in hand
- 00:10:07I don't understand that we are
- 00:10:09successful all the time but anybody can
- 00:10:12produce
- 00:10:13a service or a product that meets two or
- 00:10:16three of these the trick is to secure
- 00:10:18that we hit on our files and I think
- 00:10:21that is in my opinion one
- 00:10:25all right let's see if this is better
- 00:10:27and so I believe that is crucial when it
- 00:10:31comes to the way that we do things that
- 00:10:33we aim for this not always 100
- 00:10:35successful but that's a very tight net
- 00:10:38to secure that this we believe when we
- 00:10:40launch the service or a product that we
- 00:10:42meet all these criterias
- 00:10:45then um
- 00:10:47some of you know that Ikea used to be
- 00:10:50the blue and yellow box from the potato
- 00:10:51field outside of the city that was the
- 00:10:54past
- 00:10:55we are still there we still intend to
- 00:10:57continue with that but the world is
- 00:10:59changing so fast
- 00:11:01so for us to stay relevant we also need
- 00:11:03to change with the world
- 00:11:06that means for example
- 00:11:09e-commerce exams like something very
- 00:11:12obvious right now but a few years ago we
- 00:11:14decided to go for it Commerce it was not
- 00:11:16it was not a given but it's also a B in
- 00:11:19the cities where the many people are
- 00:11:20when we see many big cities in the world
- 00:11:23that people don't buy a car anymore
- 00:11:26and public transportation to some of the
- 00:11:28traditional stores might not be that
- 00:11:30good so then we need to find ways of
- 00:11:33being in the cities where the people are
- 00:11:35so we have a lot of different formats
- 00:11:37today that we can use when we want to
- 00:11:40penetrate the city and make sure that we
- 00:11:42are accessible for the menu
- 00:11:43on top of that of course it's about
- 00:11:45Services only in the past people came
- 00:11:48with the car they drove home with the
- 00:11:49car with most of their things with them
- 00:11:51but we can also see that the service
- 00:11:53economy is becoming so much bigger but
- 00:11:55we need to be both affordable and
- 00:11:56relevant to the services we offer along
- 00:11:58with products so quite big changes for
- 00:12:01us and then of course the sustainability
- 00:12:02agenda that is coming more and more
- 00:12:06we believe that by having flat acts we
- 00:12:09were actually on the train very early
- 00:12:11because we have since
- 00:12:13many decades not been shipping air we've
- 00:12:16been shipping flat back so in that sense
- 00:12:18being very economical
- 00:12:21and
- 00:12:24so what we have said that we need to
- 00:12:26secure even stronger moving forward is
- 00:12:29to say we need to be even more
- 00:12:31affordable
- 00:12:33it has been very painful this year when
- 00:12:35we've been forced to increase prices
- 00:12:36worldwide in Korea thanks for a little
- 00:12:39bit less than any other markets but that
- 00:12:41is very painful that is the last thing
- 00:12:42we want to do we want to lower our
- 00:12:45prices every year we want to do that by
- 00:12:47scale Effects by being Smarter with
- 00:12:49materials and smart will be the way that
- 00:12:51we do things
- 00:12:52so that is not at all the direction you
- 00:12:54aim for but we have to do it and of
- 00:12:57course this will need to rectify we need
- 00:12:59to find ways to come back to a lower
- 00:13:01level so that we every year can make
- 00:13:03sure that more and more people can
- 00:13:04actually afford our products especially
- 00:13:07if you look at the vulnerabilities in
- 00:13:09the world today with their economic
- 00:13:11disasters Wars coping you name it there
- 00:13:14are even more people that are being
- 00:13:16pushed into poverty or being pushed from
- 00:13:18the middle class into below that and we
- 00:13:22need to be there for them because that
- 00:13:23is our mission that is the reason we
- 00:13:25exist to make sure that more people can
- 00:13:27have a great life so this is a
- 00:13:29absolutely one of the main topics that
- 00:13:32we are focusing on
- 00:13:34that is about securing that we are
- 00:13:37better much better than today at
- 00:13:40amplifying on the channel so going from
- 00:13:42being this potato field retailer in blue
- 00:13:45yellow boxes to being someone who you
- 00:13:48can connect with anytime anywhere anyhow
- 00:13:51you like whether online offline a
- 00:13:54combination going to a showroom and to
- 00:13:57be inspired choosing to to place an
- 00:14:00order later or not or being inspired by
- 00:14:03care and going to a competitor buying
- 00:14:05your stuff or producing them yourselves
- 00:14:07the important thing is that we
- 00:14:09contribute to Better World it is
- 00:14:11actually a secondary where people choose
- 00:14:13to buy the products from astronauts but
- 00:14:15if we can inspire people to have a
- 00:14:16better life at home we feel that we have
- 00:14:19accomplished something
- 00:14:24it is about going much further than
- 00:14:28where we are today and developing a
- 00:14:29fully sustainable model making sure that
- 00:14:32we are not seen as the company and that
- 00:14:34we are not in any way that can that
- 00:14:37pushes for Mass consumption and a
- 00:14:40throwaway culture this is truly
- 00:14:42important to us and here we have a big
- 00:14:44job left to do we have come quite a bit
- 00:14:46on the journey
- 00:14:48I will show you later but every time you
- 00:14:50accomplish something new you realize
- 00:14:52that there's so much more to do so this
- 00:14:53is a never-ending journey in a way but a
- 00:14:55very positive Journey
- 00:15:01if you look at the world that we are
- 00:15:03facing now
- 00:15:05it's full of disasters
- 00:15:09we have drunk in some places of the
- 00:15:13world this summer was extremely dry in
- 00:15:15Europe for example we had lots of
- 00:15:17wildfires and we of course we have a
- 00:15:20melting ice caps so it is it's a very
- 00:15:24serious situation I believe that 10
- 00:15:26years ago there were a number of people
- 00:15:28that were confident enough to deny that
- 00:15:31this was happening I think today that
- 00:15:33quite a few people that denied that it
- 00:15:35is a bit of a enormous crisis and we
- 00:15:39don't act very soon together it might
- 00:15:41actually be too late then we are not
- 00:15:43giving our children a talent that we are
- 00:15:45proud of anymore and we have an hour and
- 00:15:47the Chance not to do something about
- 00:15:49that
- 00:15:50we're going to show you a brief movie
- 00:15:52here to get you a bit into the mood
- 00:15:54potentially before I continue
- 00:16:00not yet obviously
- 00:16:02sorry about that
- 00:16:04um
- 00:16:05super speed on that first then the move
- 00:16:07is coming after this what this means for
- 00:16:10us is that this is
- 00:16:12bringing lots of new challenges from our
- 00:16:14business because if it's a challenge for
- 00:16:16the world it's a challenge for our
- 00:16:17business
- 00:16:18and you can no longer ignore to get away
- 00:16:20being a business that is actually
- 00:16:22creating Havoc or creating a worse world
- 00:16:26the new rules of the game is that we
- 00:16:29need to contribute and if we look at the
- 00:16:31refer to the previous picture the crisis
- 00:16:33we could see that unsustainable
- 00:16:35consumption puts great to the best
- 00:16:37pressure on the planet so we need to do
- 00:16:40something about this we can no longer be
- 00:16:42seen or be acting as one of those we
- 00:16:45need to do something about that very
- 00:16:47fast
- 00:16:48the second one is the climate change
- 00:16:50what does that mean for us that
- 00:16:52biological products in Europe that we
- 00:16:54ship to Korea or by poorest in China
- 00:16:56that we ship through to Europe
- 00:16:58what can we do here to make sure that we
- 00:17:01again are contributing to a better world
- 00:17:03and the third one is inequality
- 00:17:06that is unfortunately going in the wrong
- 00:17:08direction
- 00:17:09there was a positive trend for a number
- 00:17:11of years but now we are at the at the
- 00:17:13crossroads where things are actually
- 00:17:15going in the wrong direction
- 00:17:16this is also for us something that is
- 00:17:18very close to our hearts you know we
- 00:17:20feel that we need to play a positive
- 00:17:21role here
- 00:17:23now without moving
- 00:17:28[Music]
- 00:17:40what if we could create a better
- 00:17:42everyday life for the many people
- 00:17:44for the couples that turn into families
- 00:17:47the children the lovers
- 00:17:51for the old ladies the single ladies
- 00:17:54the single mothers
- 00:17:56and for those who need to start all over
- 00:17:58what if we always side with the many by
- 00:18:01designing the price tag before anything
- 00:18:03else
- 00:18:04what if Furniture could be better for
- 00:18:06nature better for people
- 00:18:08what if we could make furniture out of
- 00:18:10waste
- 00:18:12what if all glass could get new life
- 00:18:15what if we could collect all these
- 00:18:16bottles and turn them into something
- 00:18:18else
- 00:18:19like this chair what if we could plant
- 00:18:21more trees than we use and what if we
- 00:18:23could use wood in new ways so that this
- 00:18:25tree and this tree and all of these
- 00:18:28trees could grow to be just trees what
- 00:18:30if we turn the tables on food and make
- 00:18:32meatballs without meat what if we turn
- 00:18:34the tables on tables and make screws
- 00:18:36that aren't screws in fact what if we
- 00:18:39lose the screws completely so we can put
- 00:18:41things up take them down and put them up
- 00:18:44again
- 00:18:45what if we try to design new behaviors
- 00:18:48instead of new products better play
- 00:18:50instead of toys and better sleep instead
- 00:18:52of beds
- 00:18:54[Music]
- 00:18:57what if water types could save water
- 00:18:59[Music]
- 00:19:01light bulbs could save light
- 00:19:03what if all our stores could power
- 00:19:05themselves
- 00:19:07and what if the best packaging is no
- 00:19:09packaging what if we could make
- 00:19:11furniture out of air
- 00:19:13what if we tried
- 00:19:15twice
- 00:19:17and failed
- 00:19:19twice
- 00:19:22[Music]
- 00:19:24and what if we try again
- 00:19:26what if we celebrate our differences
- 00:19:29because without each and every person we
- 00:19:32wouldn't be complete what if we never
- 00:19:34settled for an answer
- 00:19:37but if you always ask ourselves
- 00:19:39what if
- 00:19:44[Music]
- 00:19:48all right
- 00:19:51from my point of view in the year 2000
- 00:19:54we realized that we were part of the
- 00:19:56problem and since then we've been
- 00:19:58working very hard to become a part of
- 00:20:00the solution I think we've come quite a
- 00:20:02long way but we have as I mentioned
- 00:20:04before about what to do 2021 was for us
- 00:20:07the leap year of sustainability so the
- 00:20:09leap year what we said that now that we
- 00:20:11have a year where we were full-on that
- 00:20:13that starts the take care of
- 00:20:15sustainability until 2030 when we should
- 00:20:18be climate positive
- 00:20:20we call that the people are kind of
- 00:20:22positive and that consists of different
- 00:20:24parts but it's their climate but it's
- 00:20:26also equality and so it's a whole
- 00:20:28package for us
- 00:20:30and
- 00:20:31so when it comes to healthy and
- 00:20:33sustainable living we say that in 2013
- 00:20:35what we want to make sure is that we
- 00:20:37have inspired and enabled more than a
- 00:20:39billion people to live a more
- 00:20:41sustainable life
- 00:20:42and within the limits of the planets
- 00:20:46we have a few more years to get there
- 00:20:53we also say when it comes to certain
- 00:20:55type of positive that we would become
- 00:20:56climate positive and regenerate
- 00:20:58resources while growing the nuclear
- 00:21:00business by 2013.
- 00:21:04already last year we actually produce
- 00:21:06more green energy than we used
- 00:21:08it doesn't mean that we everywhere use
- 00:21:10green energy only and some of it we
- 00:21:12certainly unable to use in our own units
- 00:21:14and Korea we're actually one of the the
- 00:21:17worst countries in detail world when it
- 00:21:19comes to using green energy
- 00:21:22talk a bit about that
- 00:21:25and we talk about fairly inclusive to
- 00:21:27create a social impact for everyone
- 00:21:29across the gear value chain
- 00:21:32when it comes to the revenue chain we
- 00:21:34also see the consumers the consumers
- 00:21:36have come to us that are interacting
- 00:21:37with us we see them as an integrated
- 00:21:39part in that value chain
- 00:21:43and becoming Planet positive by 2030 and
- 00:21:48we will do that by being powered 100 by
- 00:21:52renewable energy while increasing Energy
- 00:21:55Efficiency that's the first one we will
- 00:21:57do it by striving for zero waste and
- 00:21:59becoming truly circular
- 00:22:01and we will do it by ensuring zero
- 00:22:04emissions from home deliveries
- 00:22:13again it's easy to paint the rose
- 00:22:16picture
- 00:22:17with the pitch and everything that you
- 00:22:19you might never preach so I think it's
- 00:22:22important also say to where are we now
- 00:22:24with all this view for 2013. and and I
- 00:22:28will make a couple of details but I am
- 00:22:31genuinely proud of what we have managed
- 00:22:34to achieve from the year 2000 and
- 00:22:37especially maybe the last two three
- 00:22:39years by really investing and working
- 00:22:42very hard with our co-workers and with
- 00:22:44our partners
- 00:22:45so a few deep Dives so 56 of the energy
- 00:22:50we use but 76 of the electricity is
- 00:22:54actually great
- 00:22:56and
- 00:22:58we are investing a lot of money so far
- 00:23:01we are owning 575 wind turbines in 17
- 00:23:06countries
- 00:23:07we own 20 solar cars
- 00:23:11on top of that we have close to a
- 00:23:13million solar panels on top of our
- 00:23:15stores and distribution centers in the
- 00:23:17world
- 00:23:18so this again is really really important
- 00:23:20to us some countries are forehead and
- 00:23:23some countries not but from the
- 00:23:25worldwide point of view it looks fairly
- 00:23:27good I would say it's more to make sure
- 00:23:29that the rest of us catch up as well
- 00:23:36today 73 percent of all the material we
- 00:23:39use in our products is either recyclable
- 00:23:42or renewable
- 00:23:44we need to get that to 100 73 is is an
- 00:23:48extremely high number looking at other
- 00:23:50retailers but we don't compare to other
- 00:23:52retailers we just know that we need to
- 00:23:54be at 100 in 2013 and of course the last
- 00:23:58percentage are much harder than the
- 00:23:59first ones so we built this in very
- 00:24:02cleanly in the Democratic design that I
- 00:24:05showed you with the five different
- 00:24:06elements that all need to meet so all
- 00:24:08new products made this
- 00:24:16when it comes to circularity
- 00:24:20last year supposedly 22 that ended for
- 00:24:24us in August 227
- 00:24:27000 products were actually brought back
- 00:24:28we call it pre-loved products when you
- 00:24:31have a product that you no longer need
- 00:24:34what you do with it yeah we for sure
- 00:24:36don't want you to throw it away whether
- 00:24:38you give it to somebody if you sell it
- 00:24:40on an external platform or you set it
- 00:24:42back to Ikea so that we can fix it and
- 00:24:44sell it to somebody who's willing to to
- 00:24:46buy your preload product
- 00:24:49and so we gave New Life to 227 000
- 00:24:52pieces last year and I believe this is
- 00:24:55just the beginning
- 00:25:01we are a big donator and I think one
- 00:25:03thing that makes it here very different
- 00:25:05from most companies not all but most is
- 00:25:09that we don't have an owner that wants a
- 00:25:12single parent from us nothing nothing
- 00:25:17out of the total profit we make
- 00:25:2085 goes back into the company to get
- 00:25:25news source to improve sustainability
- 00:25:27investing co-workers competence whatever
- 00:25:30it is and 15 goes to Eta foundation and
- 00:25:34this money is used to support the most
- 00:25:37vulnerable people in the world
- 00:25:39a couple weeks ago now we made the noise
- 00:25:41donation of 20 million euros to
- 00:25:43referring victims in Pakistan as an
- 00:25:45example
- 00:25:47we are donating all in order together
- 00:25:49with our sister company in tarikia and
- 00:25:5316 million euros to Ukraine refugees
- 00:25:57from Ukraine
- 00:25:58so always where the most vulnerable
- 00:26:00people need us that is what we use
- 00:26:02foundations for and of course this gives
- 00:26:05us a big strength because we can
- 00:26:07actually think in Generations because we
- 00:26:09don't have to think about the code of
- 00:26:10the report what will happen with the
- 00:26:12with the Share value with the
- 00:26:14shareholders be happy or not and that
- 00:26:16gives us a unique benefit I would say to
- 00:26:18be able to think in generations and to
- 00:26:20say that now for 10 years we would work
- 00:26:22on this and make it happen
- 00:26:24equal costs but it's worth it then we
- 00:26:27need to do it
- 00:26:31so I mentioned before the decade of
- 00:26:34people on planet that we kicked off in
- 00:26:36in 2021
- 00:26:38and so we have just ended now the third
- 00:26:40year for us starting the first of
- 00:26:43September where we work with this and we
- 00:26:45know that we had this year and seven
- 00:26:47more to really be where we need to be
- 00:26:49and it's all about securing
- 00:26:52The Better Homes how can they create a
- 00:26:54better life and how will a better life
- 00:26:56create better planet
- 00:27:02if we then look into Korea what have we
- 00:27:05done here I mentioned for example that
- 00:27:07when it comes to Green energy we are
- 00:27:09we're far behind but we have a lot of
- 00:27:11success stories here as well maybe just
- 00:27:13to touch the one there about the green
- 00:27:15energy it's actually first from uh first
- 00:27:18of January this year that you have been
- 00:27:20able to buy green energy in Korea
- 00:27:24and only eight percent of the total
- 00:27:25offer of energy is green
- 00:27:28and the price is uh unbelievable
- 00:27:32so here the only green onion basis that
- 00:27:35we get is the one that we produce
- 00:27:36ourselves by having solar panels so
- 00:27:39there we need to get somewhere and we
- 00:27:41are desperately looking for partners we
- 00:27:43are more than willing to invest also
- 00:27:45here in wind turbines or in solar Parks
- 00:27:48just to make sure that we get there so
- 00:27:49we can secure that in every country to
- 00:27:51not only as a global average but in
- 00:27:53every country that we secure that we Run
- 00:27:56100 renewable energy
- 00:28:00um
- 00:28:01but if I move here then we have
- 00:28:04been working a lot when it comes to how
- 00:28:07we inspire people with sustainable
- 00:28:09products to make sure that people can
- 00:28:11actually have a better life at home a
- 00:28:13safer life at home
- 00:28:14and we have out of our range of nine and
- 00:28:17a half thousand products we have a
- 00:28:18number of those that we say are
- 00:28:20absolutely sustainable Heroes and there
- 00:28:22is this Global competition every country
- 00:28:24is involved who can sell the biggest
- 00:28:26share of your total sales from the
- 00:28:28sustainable Heroes and in Korea we are
- 00:28:30actually the second second best country
- 00:28:33or the second highest
- 00:28:34in the world I should say
- 00:28:38um which means that
- 00:28:40we have hopefully been quite good at
- 00:28:43showing inspiration around the world
- 00:28:45around sustainability but also that the
- 00:28:47consumers in Korea should have a big
- 00:28:50interest in contributing
- 00:28:52it could be contributing for a better
- 00:28:54world or it could be the way I make sure
- 00:28:56that I save money by having more LED
- 00:28:58bulbs for example or it could be that I
- 00:29:00believe that this is healthy for my
- 00:29:02family for my kid
- 00:29:04so very very good run there
- 00:29:08also when it comes to food
- 00:29:10the first
- 00:29:12in store
- 00:29:16um Urban Farm is actually here in Korea
- 00:29:18not only the first it's the only one so
- 00:29:21far we have Urban farms in many
- 00:29:23countries but we have them in containers
- 00:29:25outside of the Ikea stores but here we
- 00:29:28build the first one to really Inspire it
- 00:29:30and these Works tremendously well the
- 00:29:33interest is definitely there
- 00:29:36if I look at when I came to Korea five
- 00:29:38years ago I felt that the interest
- 00:29:40sustainability was not not huge
- 00:29:43and I moved here from from Paris at the
- 00:29:45time and
- 00:29:48but what we can see now is how my
- 00:29:50standards the increase after the green
- 00:29:52new leading after the ESG drive and so
- 00:29:55on I think that's fantastic not only for
- 00:29:57people living in Korea but it's
- 00:29:59fantastic that Korea is a contribute to
- 00:30:01putting this so high in the agenda so we
- 00:30:03see this coming very very strongly
- 00:30:07then we have overall when it comes to
- 00:30:09plant-based food and it's not about
- 00:30:12telling people you should not eat meat
- 00:30:14that is not the way we want to do it we
- 00:30:15want to give people an option and say if
- 00:30:18you want to buy traditional food meat
- 00:30:20please go ahead and do that we will
- 00:30:22continue to serve that but we will also
- 00:30:24increase our offer when it comes to
- 00:30:25plant best food which is better for that
- 00:30:28for example this landfall is 96 lower
- 00:30:33carbon footprint than the traditional
- 00:30:35meatball
- 00:30:37and another big surprise for me coming
- 00:30:40to to Korea which for me is a huge neat
- 00:30:42country
- 00:30:44we are by far Ikea Korea by far number
- 00:30:48one when it comes to the share of the
- 00:30:51campus that we sell in our restaurants I
- 00:30:54would never have expected that
- 00:30:56so that's also a very big contribution
- 00:30:58and we have now uh 25
- 00:31:01plant-based food in the restaurant and
- 00:31:03from uh this year we will reach 42
- 00:31:07percent
- 00:31:08giving a wide range of more more fruit
- 00:31:10that is plant-based and then better for
- 00:31:13the environment really better for for
- 00:31:15you as well
- 00:31:20home deliveries
- 00:31:22and
- 00:31:23at the end of August 70 of all track
- 00:31:28deliveries to homes and businesses in
- 00:31:31Korea were based on easy trucks
- 00:31:33we will reach 60 this year and in 2025
- 00:31:37we will be at 100
- 00:31:39worldwide including Korea 30 is is it
- 00:31:43quite good number some of you might have
- 00:31:44seen before when I showed the worldwide
- 00:31:47that we are actually ahead
- 00:31:49we wanted to be even further but there
- 00:31:51were supply issues last year to get
- 00:31:54enough trucks for us
- 00:31:57and the interesting thing is that
- 00:31:59it doesn't cost more
- 00:32:03many people think that sustainability
- 00:32:05always costs more it doesn't and
- 00:32:07especially now when diesel is up through
- 00:32:10the roof in many countries this is a
- 00:32:13very very good opportunity a very good
- 00:32:15option
- 00:32:16and that's exciting that we are getting
- 00:32:18away from this that if I do sustainable
- 00:32:20things they always cost more than
- 00:32:22conventional things
- 00:32:26circularity making that easy and I
- 00:32:30mentioned the 227 000 products pre-love
- 00:32:34programs that we we took back or both
- 00:32:36back and gave a new license and also
- 00:32:38told them we also had this circular lab
- 00:32:40in all our units here in Korea
- 00:32:43um
- 00:32:45also there I am very positively
- 00:32:47surprised it's just how many people are
- 00:32:49actually willing to buy pre-loved
- 00:32:52products
- 00:32:53it is fantastic to see so this is a
- 00:32:57growing way faster and more than we
- 00:33:01expected
- 00:33:05then we have equality diversity and
- 00:33:07inclusion
- 00:33:08and for us to have an include inclusive
- 00:33:11Society is really really important
- 00:33:14and here we look at each country that we
- 00:33:17go through what does it mean here
- 00:33:19what are the glass ceilings in this
- 00:33:22specific country which would be very
- 00:33:24different in Sweden compared to Korea
- 00:33:26for example
- 00:33:27in Korea the first last evening is the
- 00:33:29agenda okay where business is still in
- 00:33:33our opinion a man's world so we need to
- 00:33:36secure equality there and we have now 54
- 00:33:4046 the agenda share when it comes to
- 00:33:42management positions in the company in
- 00:33:43Korea
- 00:33:46that is about the
- 00:33:48single unwed amounts that we have been
- 00:33:51working with for five years now to make
- 00:33:53sure that the group that is
- 00:33:57outside in Korea not always respected
- 00:34:00that they are taken care of we work
- 00:34:02together with them
- 00:34:04and we are also starting working with
- 00:34:07elderly people
- 00:34:08securing that elderly people that do not
- 00:34:11have an income that do not maybe have a
- 00:34:13safe unit in terms of family that we are
- 00:34:15there with them but we have a lot more
- 00:34:16to do there
- 00:34:19and we have people with disabilities
- 00:34:22where we secure that we are minimum on
- 00:34:24the on the government level of security
- 00:34:26that you should answer to share of
- 00:34:28release with disabilities
- 00:34:30and for us this is not a sacrifice it is
- 00:34:32we are very happy to do this and I would
- 00:34:34say that some of the most loyal people
- 00:34:36you can imagine are the people that
- 00:34:38don't get equal opportunities elsewhere
- 00:34:40could you open up for those people they
- 00:34:42will love you more than anybody else
- 00:34:44because you are actually giving them a
- 00:34:46chance to show them through the art
- 00:34:48the last group I want to mentioned is
- 00:34:50the lgbtq plus community
- 00:34:53that is also in Korea a very vulnerable
- 00:34:56group not respected neither by Family
- 00:34:59nor by societies but and here we do what
- 00:35:03we can we were actually the only company
- 00:35:05with the local in the Korean parade this
- 00:35:09summer is old
- 00:35:11I hope soon that we will have more than
- 00:35:13a similar Journey as to sustainability
- 00:35:16five years ago we spoke about
- 00:35:18sustainability we felt very lovely very
- 00:35:21lonely today we have 500 companies
- 00:35:24wanted to talk sustainability with us
- 00:35:25and I hope that the same goes for lgbtq
- 00:35:28plus today we are very lonely
- 00:35:31but a few years down the down the road
- 00:35:34we hope that they're not
- 00:35:38um
- 00:35:39and we have
- 00:35:42some people South Koreans not to
- 00:35:44remember that South Koreans that are
- 00:35:45actually openly gay and I'm very proud
- 00:35:48of that that we have in Korea people who
- 00:35:51can stand and say well I'm gay
- 00:35:53Korean people and that is unfortunately
- 00:35:56very unusual also in Korea I hope this
- 00:35:59is something something good that is
- 00:36:01starting now
- 00:36:02is this good for our business probably
- 00:36:04Maybe not maybe our time
- 00:36:07um
- 00:36:08when we started posting some years ago
- 00:36:10on Instagram we expected 30 percent hate
- 00:36:15some neutral and the rest positive
- 00:36:17and now it's down to 10 hey don't they
- 00:36:20were being took when we post something
- 00:36:21positive about LGBT to us
- 00:36:24so Society is somehow changing and I
- 00:36:27think that's very healthy and it feels
- 00:36:28great if we can play a small role and
- 00:36:30again be making Korea more inclusive
- 00:36:37actions speak
- 00:36:40and I started saying that it's easy to
- 00:36:43make very Visionary plans and then
- 00:36:46presentations
- 00:36:48and it's also very easy to try to
- 00:36:49impress people on what you've done
- 00:36:51and but I just want to re-stress here
- 00:36:54that
- 00:36:55we have made lots of mistakes we will
- 00:36:58continue to make mistakes but the
- 00:36:59ambition and intention is there and it's
- 00:37:02very clear and there's no denial from
- 00:37:05our side that when the safety start and
- 00:37:07we welcome scrutiny from ngos and
- 00:37:10governments and so on and we're very
- 00:37:12happy to work together with that because
- 00:37:13we genuinely want to be positive force
- 00:37:17but we also know that if we don't take
- 00:37:19any risks and make statements of things
- 00:37:21we want to do if we don't take these
- 00:37:24long decisions
- 00:37:25we will not move mountains either
- 00:37:27so I hope that what I've shown here
- 00:37:30about the
- 00:37:32intentions we have but also what we've
- 00:37:34already delivered that you get the
- 00:37:35better understanding here that at least
- 00:37:37we are genuinely trying to do our best
- 00:37:39and we're not trying to impress anyone
- 00:37:41purely on what we're able to do but also
- 00:37:43be transparent about where we are
- 00:37:49so what does it take and this is not a
- 00:37:52summary of a truth this is our take so
- 00:37:55this is a chaos take what we believe it
- 00:37:59takes to become china-positive
- 00:38:02and we think that the first one is about
- 00:38:05the importance of having a vision having
- 00:38:08a purpose and our vision to create a
- 00:38:11better every life for the many people
- 00:38:13that was written decades ago I think
- 00:38:16that it's actually more relevant than
- 00:38:18later today
- 00:38:21so we know exactly why we exist then we
- 00:38:23also know that to be able to get there
- 00:38:25we need to make a certain profit so we
- 00:38:27can continue to expand and reach more of
- 00:38:29the many people
- 00:38:31of purpose is very clear
- 00:38:34that is about having a holistic view of
- 00:38:37performance
- 00:38:39and when we look at Investments
- 00:38:42we always look at the business result
- 00:38:45how it impacts co-workers our team
- 00:38:47actually consumer and how it impacts the
- 00:38:51the company or profitability point of
- 00:38:53view
- 00:38:54always looking at that that is is very
- 00:38:56important for us that you bring all
- 00:38:59dimensions in
- 00:39:01you don't only look at the Top Line
- 00:39:02because that is very short-sighted
- 00:39:05it might have worked some years ago
- 00:39:08but if you're a consumer brand and you
- 00:39:10don't have genuine intentions but you do
- 00:39:12it only for short-term profit you might
- 00:39:15not live very long so I think this is
- 00:39:17the The New Normal
- 00:39:19that is what integrated sustainability
- 00:39:21in the business to make sure that you
- 00:39:23always look at what is the additional
- 00:39:25carbon footprint or how can we offset
- 00:39:27the carbon footprint if we take a
- 00:39:29certain decision to say it's good for
- 00:39:31business is it also good for a planet if
- 00:39:34not what do we do and we don't have a
- 00:39:36mitigation plan we don't go for it then
- 00:39:38we do something else instead
- 00:39:41to always integrate sustainability into
- 00:39:44decisions taken
- 00:39:47the fourth one is taxing dynamos and I I
- 00:39:49was onto it a little bit that
- 00:39:52many people believe and many companies
- 00:39:54say that we would like to be more
- 00:39:57sustainable but it costs too much money
- 00:39:59we can't afford it
- 00:40:02we had the last 10 years been producing
- 00:40:04our carbon footprint year after year
- 00:40:06while we have increased our turnover in
- 00:40:10our reach
- 00:40:12another example is the EB trucks to
- 00:40:15deliver guns to people's homes it's
- 00:40:17actually not more expensive specs for
- 00:40:19the plant is not more expensive so we
- 00:40:22need to get out of those
- 00:40:24made up truths and shown that no it is
- 00:40:28not true if you really sincerely go into
- 00:40:31it and you look into it and try to find
- 00:40:33Solutions
- 00:40:35it is often a winning thing to be on the
- 00:40:38side of sustainability
- 00:40:40I don't say it was 30 years ago but now
- 00:40:43it is
- 00:40:44so we need to get away from this
- 00:40:47dilemmas where people could do things
- 00:40:49against each other that you actually go
- 00:40:52hand in hand
- 00:40:54and then it's about taking action
- 00:40:56together
- 00:40:58nobody can do everything but everybody
- 00:40:59can do something
- 00:41:01how can we secure that we create
- 00:41:03momentum behind sustainability
- 00:41:07and the better world how can we make
- 00:41:09sure that ngos governments
- 00:41:13consumers companies that we work
- 00:41:16together to really make sure that we
- 00:41:17move mountains together because
- 00:41:20if you want to go fast you go alone but
- 00:41:23if you want to go far if you go together
- 00:41:24and I think that is where we want to
- 00:41:26know we want to go far speed is
- 00:41:28important but it's better that you can
- 00:41:30really reach our our long-term goals
- 00:41:32which for us and is 20 30 to be kind of
- 00:41:35possible
- 00:41:36so this has been how we see the menu
- 00:41:40and we think also that the
- 00:41:43it is
- 00:41:45a good business to vehicle business
- 00:41:49again reducing our carbon footprint
- 00:41:52while other growth goes up at the same
- 00:41:55time as profit goes up not necessarily
- 00:41:57last year because we were holding back
- 00:41:59whenever so many price increases but
- 00:42:01overall and of course the extra bottom
- 00:42:04line 15 goes to the most vulnerable
- 00:42:06people in the world and the other 85
- 00:42:08close to making the business we're doing
- 00:42:10even better
- 00:42:12so
- 00:42:14doing your best for the planet
- 00:42:17we believe is good for your business
- 00:42:25yeah
- 00:42:26that was the presentation
