    Factory and
  • 00:00:50
    um
  • 00:00:51
and we actually covered the issues on on
  • 00:00:54
    business
  • 00:00:55
    diplomacy technology regarding
  • 00:01:02
countries and so far a number of
  • 00:01:05
    ambassadors
  • 00:01:07
expert and the CEOs have had a busy
  • 00:01:10
Korean University and have delivered a
  • 00:01:13
    valuable
  • 00:01:14
    Church in this program
  • 00:01:17
and this event is the first event in the
  • 00:01:21
    fall semester and I'm
  • 00:01:24
truly privileged to have a very
  • 00:01:28
    distinguished lecture from a very
  • 00:01:32
    popular in Phoenix company
  • 00:01:34
Ethel but in English it will be we
  • 00:01:38
promise I care but but I think in
  • 00:01:41
Swedish is being here and I suppose a
  • 00:01:45
Korean student who will recognize the
  • 00:01:47
    company as Ikea
  • 00:01:48
    how many of you
  • 00:01:50
have never used in care before
  • 00:01:59
    and that means
  • 00:02:01
at some point especially for students
  • 00:02:05
especially for students or yeah well
  • 00:02:08
when nowadays when we I need some
  • 00:02:11
support which is not that heavy but the
  • 00:02:14
casual but convenient and often times
  • 00:02:17
media is this very near you can order
  • 00:02:20
your online or you may visit uh yeah
  • 00:02:24
like applying a shopping and be careful
  • 00:02:27
sometimes you would get lost and spend
  • 00:02:30
two three hours easily there but at
  • 00:02:33
least a good thing is there always
  • 00:02:35
something to eat there too some
  • 00:02:37
restaurants in Indica so this is
  • 00:02:41
certainly but not just a furniture
  • 00:02:43
company but it was more of the lifestyle
  • 00:02:47
    company I will
  • 00:02:49
cool and I'm today I'm privileged to
  • 00:02:53
have a Mr Frederick Johansson CEO and
  • 00:02:58
CSO Chief sustainability officer of Ikea
  • 00:03:02
    Korea here at Korea University
  • 00:03:06
    uh
  • 00:03:09
    commission is
  • 00:03:12
truly the Ikea person you have a
  • 00:03:16
starting your career in 1996 at Ikea and
  • 00:03:20
well I spent 26 27 years in especially
  • 00:03:26
in international business side of ekrn
  • 00:03:29
    worked in Sweden China
  • 00:03:33
friends and Korea now and nowadays get
  • 00:03:36
    working as CEO and c s o
  • 00:03:40
    uh
  • 00:03:41
of Korea the branch and uh the today's
  • 00:03:46
    topic is about India's sustainability
  • 00:03:50
for the future oftentimes we are talking
  • 00:03:54
about now if we talk a lot about BSG and
  • 00:03:59
new kind of business model and also a
  • 00:04:01
    new kind of corporate governance
  • 00:04:03
    emphasizing environment and social value
  • 00:04:08
    and transparent governments and import
  • 00:04:11
obma call it a sustainability so how to
  • 00:04:14
    combine this sustainability and
  • 00:04:17
    corporate governance
  • 00:04:19
and how to combine this value with a
  • 00:04:23
    customer
  • 00:04:24
so maybe no doubt regarding this
  • 00:04:29
    sustainability issues many
  • 00:04:33
    many stories with it
  • 00:04:35
    um
  • 00:04:35
have been the four Waters in enhancing
  • 00:04:38
this sustainability issues and agenda in
  • 00:04:44
in a different setting in international
  • 00:04:47
preparation so uh we will certainly we
  • 00:04:51
    will see how
  • 00:04:53
    sustainability is coming into the
  • 00:04:56
business arena with with wonderful place
  • 00:05:00
of India okay so uh without further with
  • 00:05:03
you uh let's please welcome uh Mr
  • 00:05:09
    President Johan's third floor please
  • 00:05:11
welcome him a little big round
  • 00:05:21
thank you very much first of all for the
  • 00:05:23
kind introduction for the warm-up close
  • 00:05:27
so I assume it's pretty clear who I am
  • 00:05:30
but a few words that might be of
  • 00:05:32
    interest
  • 00:05:33
26 years yes full time but I actually
  • 00:05:36
have 35 years in the company
  • 00:05:39
I worked nine years part-time during my
  • 00:05:42
    high school and University years
  • 00:05:44
    and
  • 00:05:46
I was actually here visiting this campus
  • 00:05:49
    in
  • 00:05:51
1995. there might be people here that
  • 00:05:53
weren't born at the time I was sitting
  • 00:05:56
there where you are sitting at another
  • 00:05:58
University in Seoul as an exchange
  • 00:06:00
    student here
  • 00:06:01
and at the time we were not so many
  • 00:06:04
exchange students back then and we were
  • 00:06:06
then invited to visit some of the
  • 00:06:08
campuses of the other major universities
  • 00:06:10
so this is my first revisit here since
  • 00:06:13
    1995.
  • 00:06:15
and I can't say that I recognize very
  • 00:06:17
much maybe we came from a different
  • 00:06:18
entrance but it's anyway been very nice
  • 00:06:20
    to be back
  • 00:06:23
so my love story with Korea started uh
  • 00:06:25
in 1995 and then I moved here then five
  • 00:06:29
years ago together with a wife and and
  • 00:06:32
    kids
  • 00:06:33
and today I will bring you a bit on a
  • 00:06:37
journey explaining what we as secure
  • 00:06:39
have done and what we aim to do and I
  • 00:06:43
also think it's important to focus on
  • 00:06:44
the things that we have done because
  • 00:06:46
anybody can can make nice something okay
  • 00:06:50
yeah and anybody can make nice plans
  • 00:06:53
    there's actually the action speaks
  • 00:06:55
louder than words it's also very
  • 00:06:56
important to see what maybe really
  • 00:06:58
    accomplished as well
  • 00:07:01
and this is not intended in any way to
  • 00:07:03
    be any propaganda
  • 00:07:05
we make lots of mistakes I think here we
  • 00:07:09
make lots of genuine mistakes and we
  • 00:07:11
hope that we are the first ones to
  • 00:07:13
apologize for what happens and directed
  • 00:07:14
    by the mistakes done
  • 00:07:16
and after the presentation which would
  • 00:07:19
be I assume 30-35 minutes I look forward
  • 00:07:21
to the Q a and you don't have to be
  • 00:07:24
careful anything you want last week free
  • 00:07:26
draws if I cannot answer I will tell you
  • 00:07:28
so but I will do my best to answer
  • 00:07:32
    you
  • 00:07:33
    all right
  • 00:07:36
um I only saw one hand that had never
  • 00:07:39
been in contact with the KR but that
  • 00:07:40
that's okay and certainly you're nothing
  • 00:07:43
there I saw your hand and
  • 00:07:47
since three years back all CEOs or if
  • 00:07:52
you like country managers uh have a dual
  • 00:07:54
role it's CEO and c s o we have felt
  • 00:07:59
    that sustainability is the future
  • 00:08:01
    is not about
  • 00:08:05
the world because from our parents is
  • 00:08:07
actually about the world that we borrow
  • 00:08:08
from our children so we said that we
  • 00:08:10
    can't delegate that responsibility in
  • 00:08:13
each and every country we need to need
  • 00:08:14
to have a CEO taking that as well to
  • 00:08:16
make sure that it gets all the energy
  • 00:08:17
and all the effort behind it to make
  • 00:08:21
sure that we become a lot better than
  • 00:08:22
we're and that we are a positive
  • 00:08:24
    contribution to a better world
  • 00:08:27
    if I then
  • 00:08:30
    see
  • 00:08:32
voila and I want to start with the
  • 00:08:35
vision I think this is very important
  • 00:08:36
this is the reason why we exist that's
  • 00:08:40
about creating a better every life for
  • 00:08:42
    the many people
  • 00:08:44
we do that in many ways One Way
  • 00:08:46
certainly you will see is throughout
  • 00:08:49
business idea where we offer people
  • 00:08:51
affordable good quality products to make
  • 00:08:53
    their life at home better
  • 00:08:55
but we also do it in the sense of
  • 00:08:57
    securing that our co-workers are
  • 00:09:00
respected and treated fairly all over
  • 00:09:03
    the world
  • 00:09:03
and the Third Way We Do It Is by being a
  • 00:09:06
    good neighbor security that people
  • 00:09:07
living close to Ikea that they get the
  • 00:09:11
support needed where appropriate and on
  • 00:09:13
top of that lots of donations I will
  • 00:09:15
talk a bit about that later to the most
  • 00:09:17
    vulnerable people in the world
  • 00:09:19
but this is really important and I think
  • 00:09:21
it inspires me for 35 years now to stay
  • 00:09:24
with the company because it gives me a
  • 00:09:26
very clear sense of purpose it's not
  • 00:09:29
about making anybody Rich it's about
  • 00:09:31
being a good source in the world
  • 00:09:34
then we have the uh the business idea
  • 00:09:36
and this more explains the business as
  • 00:09:39
such so this is what we do and also the
  • 00:09:42
    time
  • 00:09:43
but I rather want to focus on on the
  • 00:09:46
third part which is democratic design
  • 00:09:49
which explains how we do it
  • 00:09:52
and everything we do we aim to secure
  • 00:09:55
    the whole these five parts
  • 00:09:58
all these five parts so foreign function
  • 00:10:01
    for the sustainability and
  • 00:10:04
that they go hand in hand
  • 00:10:07
I don't understand that we are
  • 00:10:09
successful all the time but anybody can
  • 00:10:12
    produce
  • 00:10:13
a service or a product that meets two or
  • 00:10:16
three of these the trick is to secure
  • 00:10:18
that we hit on our files and I think
  • 00:10:21
that is in my opinion one
  • 00:10:25
all right let's see if this is better
  • 00:10:27
and so I believe that is crucial when it
  • 00:10:31
comes to the way that we do things that
  • 00:10:33
we aim for this not always 100
  • 00:10:35
successful but that's a very tight net
  • 00:10:38
to secure that this we believe when we
  • 00:10:40
launch the service or a product that we
  • 00:10:42
    meet all these criterias
  • 00:10:45
    then um
  • 00:10:47
some of you know that Ikea used to be
  • 00:10:50
the blue and yellow box from the potato
  • 00:10:51
field outside of the city that was the
  • 00:10:54
    past
  • 00:10:55
we are still there we still intend to
  • 00:10:57
continue with that but the world is
  • 00:10:59
    changing so fast
  • 00:11:01
so for us to stay relevant we also need
  • 00:11:03
    to change with the world
  • 00:11:06
    that means for example
  • 00:11:09
    e-commerce exams like something very
  • 00:11:12
obvious right now but a few years ago we
  • 00:11:14
decided to go for it Commerce it was not
  • 00:11:16
it was not a given but it's also a B in
  • 00:11:19
the cities where the many people are
  • 00:11:20
when we see many big cities in the world
  • 00:11:23
that people don't buy a car anymore
  • 00:11:26
and public transportation to some of the
  • 00:11:28
traditional stores might not be that
  • 00:11:30
good so then we need to find ways of
  • 00:11:33
being in the cities where the people are
  • 00:11:35
so we have a lot of different formats
  • 00:11:37
today that we can use when we want to
  • 00:11:40
penetrate the city and make sure that we
  • 00:11:42
    are accessible for the menu
  • 00:11:43
on top of that of course it's about
  • 00:11:45
Services only in the past people came
  • 00:11:48
with the car they drove home with the
  • 00:11:49
car with most of their things with them
  • 00:11:51
but we can also see that the service
  • 00:11:53
economy is becoming so much bigger but
  • 00:11:55
we need to be both affordable and
  • 00:11:56
relevant to the services we offer along
  • 00:11:58
with products so quite big changes for
  • 00:12:01
us and then of course the sustainability
  • 00:12:02
agenda that is coming more and more
  • 00:12:06
we believe that by having flat acts we
  • 00:12:09
were actually on the train very early
  • 00:12:11
    because we have since
  • 00:12:13
many decades not been shipping air we've
  • 00:12:16
been shipping flat back so in that sense
  • 00:12:18
    being very economical
  • 00:12:21
    and
  • 00:12:24
so what we have said that we need to
  • 00:12:26
secure even stronger moving forward is
  • 00:12:29
to say we need to be even more
  • 00:12:31
    affordable
  • 00:12:33
it has been very painful this year when
  • 00:12:35
we've been forced to increase prices
  • 00:12:36
worldwide in Korea thanks for a little
  • 00:12:39
bit less than any other markets but that
  • 00:12:41
is very painful that is the last thing
  • 00:12:42
we want to do we want to lower our
  • 00:12:45
prices every year we want to do that by
  • 00:12:47
scale Effects by being Smarter with
  • 00:12:49
materials and smart will be the way that
  • 00:12:51
    we do things
  • 00:12:52
so that is not at all the direction you
  • 00:12:54
aim for but we have to do it and of
  • 00:12:57
course this will need to rectify we need
  • 00:12:59
to find ways to come back to a lower
  • 00:13:01
level so that we every year can make
  • 00:13:03
sure that more and more people can
  • 00:13:04
    actually afford our products especially
  • 00:13:07
if you look at the vulnerabilities in
  • 00:13:09
the world today with their economic
  • 00:13:11
disasters Wars coping you name it there
  • 00:13:14
are even more people that are being
  • 00:13:16
pushed into poverty or being pushed from
  • 00:13:18
the middle class into below that and we
  • 00:13:22
need to be there for them because that
  • 00:13:23
is our mission that is the reason we
  • 00:13:25
exist to make sure that more people can
  • 00:13:27
have a great life so this is a
  • 00:13:29
absolutely one of the main topics that
  • 00:13:32
    we are focusing on
  • 00:13:34
that is about securing that we are
  • 00:13:37
better much better than today at
  • 00:13:40
amplifying on the channel so going from
  • 00:13:42
being this potato field retailer in blue
  • 00:13:45
yellow boxes to being someone who you
  • 00:13:48
can connect with anytime anywhere anyhow
  • 00:13:51
you like whether online offline a
  • 00:13:54
combination going to a showroom and to
  • 00:13:57
be inspired choosing to to place an
  • 00:14:00
order later or not or being inspired by
  • 00:14:03
care and going to a competitor buying
  • 00:14:05
your stuff or producing them yourselves
  • 00:14:07
the important thing is that we
  • 00:14:09
contribute to Better World it is
  • 00:14:11
actually a secondary where people choose
  • 00:14:13
to buy the products from astronauts but
  • 00:14:15
if we can inspire people to have a
  • 00:14:16
better life at home we feel that we have
  • 00:14:19
    accomplished something
  • 00:14:24
it is about going much further than
  • 00:14:28
where we are today and developing a
  • 00:14:29
fully sustainable model making sure that
  • 00:14:32
we are not seen as the company and that
  • 00:14:34
we are not in any way that can that
  • 00:14:37
pushes for Mass consumption and a
  • 00:14:40
    throwaway culture this is truly
  • 00:14:42
important to us and here we have a big
  • 00:14:44
job left to do we have come quite a bit
  • 00:14:46
    on the journey
  • 00:14:48
I will show you later but every time you
  • 00:14:50
    accomplish something new you realize
  • 00:14:52
that there's so much more to do so this
  • 00:14:53
    is a never-ending journey in a way but a
  • 00:14:55
    very positive Journey
  • 00:15:01
if you look at the world that we are
  • 00:15:03
    facing now
  • 00:15:05
    it's full of disasters
  • 00:15:09
we have drunk in some places of the
  • 00:15:13
world this summer was extremely dry in
  • 00:15:15
Europe for example we had lots of
  • 00:15:17
wildfires and we of course we have a
  • 00:15:20
melting ice caps so it is it's a very
  • 00:15:24
serious situation I believe that 10
  • 00:15:26
years ago there were a number of people
  • 00:15:28
that were confident enough to deny that
  • 00:15:31
this was happening I think today that
  • 00:15:33
quite a few people that denied that it
  • 00:15:35
is a bit of a enormous crisis and we
  • 00:15:39
don't act very soon together it might
  • 00:15:41
actually be too late then we are not
  • 00:15:43
giving our children a talent that we are
  • 00:15:45
proud of anymore and we have an hour and
  • 00:15:47
the Chance not to do something about
  • 00:15:49
    that
  • 00:15:50
we're going to show you a brief movie
  • 00:15:52
here to get you a bit into the mood
  • 00:15:54
    potentially before I continue
  • 00:16:00
    not yet obviously
  • 00:16:02
    sorry about that
  • 00:16:04
    um
  • 00:16:05
super speed on that first then the move
  • 00:16:07
is coming after this what this means for
  • 00:16:10
    us is that this is
  • 00:16:12
bringing lots of new challenges from our
  • 00:16:14
business because if it's a challenge for
  • 00:16:16
the world it's a challenge for our
  • 00:16:17
    business
  • 00:16:18
and you can no longer ignore to get away
  • 00:16:20
being a business that is actually
  • 00:16:22
creating Havoc or creating a worse world
  • 00:16:26
the new rules of the game is that we
  • 00:16:29
need to contribute and if we look at the
  • 00:16:31
refer to the previous picture the crisis
  • 00:16:33
    we could see that unsustainable
  • 00:16:35
consumption puts great to the best
  • 00:16:37
pressure on the planet so we need to do
  • 00:16:40
something about this we can no longer be
  • 00:16:42
seen or be acting as one of those we
  • 00:16:45
need to do something about that very
  • 00:16:47
    fast
  • 00:16:48
the second one is the climate change
  • 00:16:50
what does that mean for us that
  • 00:16:52
biological products in Europe that we
  • 00:16:54
ship to Korea or by poorest in China
  • 00:16:56
that we ship through to Europe
  • 00:16:58
what can we do here to make sure that we
  • 00:17:01
again are contributing to a better world
  • 00:17:03
and the third one is inequality
  • 00:17:06
that is unfortunately going in the wrong
  • 00:17:08
    direction
  • 00:17:09
there was a positive trend for a number
  • 00:17:11
of years but now we are at the at the
  • 00:17:13
    crossroads where things are actually
  • 00:17:15
    going in the wrong direction
  • 00:17:16
this is also for us something that is
  • 00:17:18
very close to our hearts you know we
  • 00:17:20
feel that we need to play a positive
  • 00:17:21
    role here
  • 00:17:23
    now without moving
  • 00:17:28
    [Music]
  • 00:17:40
what if we could create a better
  • 00:17:42
everyday life for the many people
  • 00:17:44
for the couples that turn into families
  • 00:17:47
    the children the lovers
  • 00:17:51
for the old ladies the single ladies
  • 00:17:54
    the single mothers
  • 00:17:56
and for those who need to start all over
  • 00:17:58
what if we always side with the many by
  • 00:18:01
designing the price tag before anything
  • 00:18:03
    else
  • 00:18:04
what if Furniture could be better for
  • 00:18:06
    nature better for people
  • 00:18:08
what if we could make furniture out of
  • 00:18:10
    waste
  • 00:18:12
what if all glass could get new life
  • 00:18:15
what if we could collect all these
  • 00:18:16
bottles and turn them into something
  • 00:18:18
    else
  • 00:18:19
like this chair what if we could plant
  • 00:18:21
more trees than we use and what if we
  • 00:18:23
could use wood in new ways so that this
  • 00:18:25
tree and this tree and all of these
  • 00:18:28
trees could grow to be just trees what
  • 00:18:30
if we turn the tables on food and make
  • 00:18:32
meatballs without meat what if we turn
  • 00:18:34
the tables on tables and make screws
  • 00:18:36
that aren't screws in fact what if we
  • 00:18:39
lose the screws completely so we can put
  • 00:18:41
things up take them down and put them up
  • 00:18:44
    again
  • 00:18:45
what if we try to design new behaviors
  • 00:18:48
instead of new products better play
  • 00:18:50
instead of toys and better sleep instead
  • 00:18:52
    of beds
  • 00:18:54
    [Music]
  • 00:18:57
what if water types could save water
  • 00:18:59
    [Music]
  • 00:19:01
    light bulbs could save light
  • 00:19:03
what if all our stores could power
  • 00:19:05
    themselves
  • 00:19:07
and what if the best packaging is no
  • 00:19:09
packaging what if we could make
  • 00:19:11
    furniture out of air
  • 00:19:13
    what if we tried
  • 00:19:15
    twice
  • 00:19:17
    and failed
  • 00:19:19
    twice
  • 00:19:22
    [Music]
  • 00:19:24
and what if we try again
  • 00:19:26
what if we celebrate our differences
  • 00:19:29
because without each and every person we
  • 00:19:32
wouldn't be complete what if we never
  • 00:19:34
    settled for an answer
  • 00:19:37
but if you always ask ourselves
  • 00:19:39
    what if
  • 00:19:44
    [Music]
  • 00:19:48
    all right
  • 00:19:51
from my point of view in the year 2000
  • 00:19:54
we realized that we were part of the
  • 00:19:56
problem and since then we've been
  • 00:19:58
working very hard to become a part of
  • 00:20:00
the solution I think we've come quite a
  • 00:20:02
long way but we have as I mentioned
  • 00:20:04
before about what to do 2021 was for us
  • 00:20:07
the leap year of sustainability so the
  • 00:20:09
leap year what we said that now that we
  • 00:20:11
have a year where we were full-on that
  • 00:20:13
that starts the take care of
  • 00:20:15
sustainability until 2030 when we should
  • 00:20:18
    be climate positive
  • 00:20:20
we call that the people are kind of
  • 00:20:22
positive and that consists of different
  • 00:20:24
parts but it's their climate but it's
  • 00:20:26
also equality and so it's a whole
  • 00:20:28
    package for us
  • 00:20:30
    and
  • 00:20:31
so when it comes to healthy and
  • 00:20:33
sustainable living we say that in 2013
  • 00:20:35
what we want to make sure is that we
  • 00:20:37
have inspired and enabled more than a
  • 00:20:39
billion people to live a more
  • 00:20:41
    sustainable life
  • 00:20:42
and within the limits of the planets
  • 00:20:46
we have a few more years to get there
  • 00:20:53
we also say when it comes to certain
  • 00:20:55
type of positive that we would become
  • 00:20:56
    climate positive and regenerate
  • 00:20:58
    resources while growing the nuclear
  • 00:21:00
    business by 2013.
  • 00:21:04
already last year we actually produce
  • 00:21:06
more green energy than we used
  • 00:21:08
it doesn't mean that we everywhere use
  • 00:21:10
green energy only and some of it we
  • 00:21:12
certainly unable to use in our own units
  • 00:21:14
and Korea we're actually one of the the
  • 00:21:17
worst countries in detail world when it
  • 00:21:19
    comes to using green energy
  • 00:21:22
    talk a bit about that
  • 00:21:25
and we talk about fairly inclusive to
  • 00:21:27
create a social impact for everyone
  • 00:21:29
    across the gear value chain
  • 00:21:32
when it comes to the revenue chain we
  • 00:21:34
also see the consumers the consumers
  • 00:21:36
have come to us that are interacting
  • 00:21:37
with us we see them as an integrated
  • 00:21:39
    part in that value chain
  • 00:21:43
and becoming Planet positive by 2030 and
  • 00:21:48
we will do that by being powered 100 by
  • 00:21:52
    renewable energy while increasing Energy
  • 00:21:55
Efficiency that's the first one we will
  • 00:21:57
do it by striving for zero waste and
  • 00:21:59
    becoming truly circular
  • 00:22:01
and we will do it by ensuring zero
  • 00:22:04
    emissions from home deliveries
  • 00:22:13
again it's easy to paint the rose
  • 00:22:16
    picture
  • 00:22:17
with the pitch and everything that you
  • 00:22:19
you might never preach so I think it's
  • 00:22:22
important also say to where are we now
  • 00:22:24
with all this view for 2013. and and I
  • 00:22:28
will make a couple of details but I am
  • 00:22:31
genuinely proud of what we have managed
  • 00:22:34
to achieve from the year 2000 and
  • 00:22:37
especially maybe the last two three
  • 00:22:39
years by really investing and working
  • 00:22:42
very hard with our co-workers and with
  • 00:22:44
    our partners
  • 00:22:45
so a few deep Dives so 56 of the energy
  • 00:22:50
we use but 76 of the electricity is
  • 00:22:54
    actually great
  • 00:22:56
    and
  • 00:22:58
we are investing a lot of money so far
  • 00:23:01
we are owning 575 wind turbines in 17
  • 00:23:06
    countries
  • 00:23:07
    we own 20 solar cars
  • 00:23:11
on top of that we have close to a
  • 00:23:13
million solar panels on top of our
  • 00:23:15
stores and distribution centers in the
  • 00:23:17
    world
  • 00:23:18
so this again is really really important
  • 00:23:20
to us some countries are forehead and
  • 00:23:23
some countries not but from the
  • 00:23:25
worldwide point of view it looks fairly
  • 00:23:27
good I would say it's more to make sure
  • 00:23:29
that the rest of us catch up as well
  • 00:23:36
today 73 percent of all the material we
  • 00:23:39
use in our products is either recyclable
  • 00:23:42
    or renewable
  • 00:23:44
we need to get that to 100 73 is is an
  • 00:23:48
extremely high number looking at other
  • 00:23:50
retailers but we don't compare to other
  • 00:23:52
retailers we just know that we need to
  • 00:23:54
be at 100 in 2013 and of course the last
  • 00:23:58
percentage are much harder than the
  • 00:23:59
first ones so we built this in very
  • 00:24:02
cleanly in the Democratic design that I
  • 00:24:05
showed you with the five different
  • 00:24:06
elements that all need to meet so all
  • 00:24:08
    new products made this
  • 00:24:16
    when it comes to circularity
  • 00:24:20
last year supposedly 22 that ended for
  • 00:24:24
    us in August 227
  • 00:24:27
000 products were actually brought back
  • 00:24:28
we call it pre-loved products when you
  • 00:24:31
have a product that you no longer need
  • 00:24:34
what you do with it yeah we for sure
  • 00:24:36
don't want you to throw it away whether
  • 00:24:38
you give it to somebody if you sell it
  • 00:24:40
on an external platform or you set it
  • 00:24:42
back to Ikea so that we can fix it and
  • 00:24:44
sell it to somebody who's willing to to
  • 00:24:46
    buy your preload product
  • 00:24:49
and so we gave New Life to 227 000
  • 00:24:52
pieces last year and I believe this is
  • 00:24:55
    just the beginning
  • 00:25:01
we are a big donator and I think one
  • 00:25:03
thing that makes it here very different
  • 00:25:05
from most companies not all but most is
  • 00:25:09
that we don't have an owner that wants a
  • 00:25:12
single parent from us nothing nothing
  • 00:25:17
out of the total profit we make
  • 00:25:20
85 goes back into the company to get
  • 00:25:25
    news source to improve sustainability
  • 00:25:27
    investing co-workers competence whatever
  • 00:25:30
it is and 15 goes to Eta foundation and
  • 00:25:34
this money is used to support the most
  • 00:25:37
    vulnerable people in the world
  • 00:25:39
a couple weeks ago now we made the noise
  • 00:25:41
donation of 20 million euros to
  • 00:25:43
referring victims in Pakistan as an
  • 00:25:45
    example
  • 00:25:47
we are donating all in order together
  • 00:25:49
with our sister company in tarikia and
  • 00:25:53
16 million euros to Ukraine refugees
  • 00:25:57
    from Ukraine
  • 00:25:58
so always where the most vulnerable
  • 00:26:00
people need us that is what we use
  • 00:26:02
foundations for and of course this gives
  • 00:26:05
us a big strength because we can
  • 00:26:07
actually think in Generations because we
  • 00:26:09
don't have to think about the code of
  • 00:26:10
the report what will happen with the
  • 00:26:12
with the Share value with the
  • 00:26:14
shareholders be happy or not and that
  • 00:26:16
gives us a unique benefit I would say to
  • 00:26:18
be able to think in generations and to
  • 00:26:20
say that now for 10 years we would work
  • 00:26:22
on this and make it happen
  • 00:26:24
equal costs but it's worth it then we
  • 00:26:27
    need to do it
  • 00:26:31
so I mentioned before the decade of
  • 00:26:34
people on planet that we kicked off in
  • 00:26:36
    in 2021
  • 00:26:38
and so we have just ended now the third
  • 00:26:40
year for us starting the first of
  • 00:26:43
September where we work with this and we
  • 00:26:45
know that we had this year and seven
  • 00:26:47
more to really be where we need to be
  • 00:26:49
    and it's all about securing
  • 00:26:52
The Better Homes how can they create a
  • 00:26:54
better life and how will a better life
  • 00:26:56
    create better planet
  • 00:27:02
if we then look into Korea what have we
  • 00:27:05
done here I mentioned for example that
  • 00:27:07
when it comes to Green energy we are
  • 00:27:09
we're far behind but we have a lot of
  • 00:27:11
success stories here as well maybe just
  • 00:27:13
to touch the one there about the green
  • 00:27:15
energy it's actually first from uh first
  • 00:27:18
of January this year that you have been
  • 00:27:20
able to buy green energy in Korea
  • 00:27:24
and only eight percent of the total
  • 00:27:25
    offer of energy is green
  • 00:27:28
and the price is uh unbelievable
  • 00:27:32
so here the only green onion basis that
  • 00:27:35
we get is the one that we produce
  • 00:27:36
ourselves by having solar panels so
  • 00:27:39
there we need to get somewhere and we
  • 00:27:41
are desperately looking for partners we
  • 00:27:43
are more than willing to invest also
  • 00:27:45
here in wind turbines or in solar Parks
  • 00:27:48
just to make sure that we get there so
  • 00:27:49
we can secure that in every country to
  • 00:27:51
not only as a global average but in
  • 00:27:53
every country that we secure that we Run
  • 00:27:56
    100 renewable energy
  • 00:28:00
    um
  • 00:28:01
but if I move here then we have
  • 00:28:04
been working a lot when it comes to how
  • 00:28:07
    we inspire people with sustainable
  • 00:28:09
products to make sure that people can
  • 00:28:11
actually have a better life at home a
  • 00:28:13
    safer life at home
  • 00:28:14
and we have out of our range of nine and
  • 00:28:17
a half thousand products we have a
  • 00:28:18
number of those that we say are
  • 00:28:20
    absolutely sustainable Heroes and there
  • 00:28:22
is this Global competition every country
  • 00:28:24
is involved who can sell the biggest
  • 00:28:26
share of your total sales from the
  • 00:28:28
sustainable Heroes and in Korea we are
  • 00:28:30
actually the second second best country
  • 00:28:33
    or the second highest
  • 00:28:34
in the world I should say
  • 00:28:38
    um which means that
  • 00:28:40
we have hopefully been quite good at
  • 00:28:43
    showing inspiration around the world
  • 00:28:45
around sustainability but also that the
  • 00:28:47
consumers in Korea should have a big
  • 00:28:50
    interest in contributing
  • 00:28:52
it could be contributing for a better
  • 00:28:54
world or it could be the way I make sure
  • 00:28:56
that I save money by having more LED
  • 00:28:58
bulbs for example or it could be that I
  • 00:29:00
believe that this is healthy for my
  • 00:29:02
    family for my kid
  • 00:29:04
so very very good run there
  • 00:29:08
also when it comes to food
  • 00:29:10
    the first
  • 00:29:12
    in store
  • 00:29:16
um Urban Farm is actually here in Korea
  • 00:29:18
not only the first it's the only one so
  • 00:29:21
far we have Urban farms in many
  • 00:29:23
countries but we have them in containers
  • 00:29:25
outside of the Ikea stores but here we
  • 00:29:28
build the first one to really Inspire it
  • 00:29:30
and these Works tremendously well the
  • 00:29:33
    interest is definitely there
  • 00:29:36
if I look at when I came to Korea five
  • 00:29:38
years ago I felt that the interest
  • 00:29:40
    sustainability was not not huge
  • 00:29:43
and I moved here from from Paris at the
  • 00:29:45
    time and
  • 00:29:48
but what we can see now is how my
  • 00:29:50
standards the increase after the green
  • 00:29:52
new leading after the ESG drive and so
  • 00:29:55
on I think that's fantastic not only for
  • 00:29:57
people living in Korea but it's
  • 00:29:59
fantastic that Korea is a contribute to
  • 00:30:01
putting this so high in the agenda so we
  • 00:30:03
see this coming very very strongly
  • 00:30:07
then we have overall when it comes to
  • 00:30:09
plant-based food and it's not about
  • 00:30:12
telling people you should not eat meat
  • 00:30:14
that is not the way we want to do it we
  • 00:30:15
want to give people an option and say if
  • 00:30:18
you want to buy traditional food meat
  • 00:30:20
please go ahead and do that we will
  • 00:30:22
continue to serve that but we will also
  • 00:30:24
increase our offer when it comes to
  • 00:30:25
plant best food which is better for that
  • 00:30:28
for example this landfall is 96 lower
  • 00:30:33
    carbon footprint than the traditional
  • 00:30:35
    meatball
  • 00:30:37
and another big surprise for me coming
  • 00:30:40
to to Korea which for me is a huge neat
  • 00:30:42
    country
  • 00:30:44
we are by far Ikea Korea by far number
  • 00:30:48
one when it comes to the share of the
  • 00:30:51
campus that we sell in our restaurants I
  • 00:30:54
    would never have expected that
  • 00:30:56
so that's also a very big contribution
  • 00:30:58
and we have now uh 25
  • 00:31:01
plant-based food in the restaurant and
  • 00:31:03
from uh this year we will reach 42
  • 00:31:07
    percent
  • 00:31:08
giving a wide range of more more fruit
  • 00:31:10
that is plant-based and then better for
  • 00:31:13
the environment really better for for
  • 00:31:15
    you as well
  • 00:31:20
    home deliveries
  • 00:31:22
    and
  • 00:31:23
at the end of August 70 of all track
  • 00:31:28
deliveries to homes and businesses in
  • 00:31:31
Korea were based on easy trucks
  • 00:31:33
we will reach 60 this year and in 2025
  • 00:31:37
    we will be at 100
  • 00:31:39
worldwide including Korea 30 is is it
  • 00:31:43
quite good number some of you might have
  • 00:31:44
seen before when I showed the worldwide
  • 00:31:47
    that we are actually ahead
  • 00:31:49
we wanted to be even further but there
  • 00:31:51
were supply issues last year to get
  • 00:31:54
    enough trucks for us
  • 00:31:57
and the interesting thing is that
  • 00:31:59
    it doesn't cost more
  • 00:32:03
    many people think that sustainability
  • 00:32:05
always costs more it doesn't and
  • 00:32:07
especially now when diesel is up through
  • 00:32:10
the roof in many countries this is a
  • 00:32:13
very very good opportunity a very good
  • 00:32:15
    option
  • 00:32:16
and that's exciting that we are getting
  • 00:32:18
away from this that if I do sustainable
  • 00:32:20
things they always cost more than
  • 00:32:22
    conventional things
  • 00:32:26
circularity making that easy and I
  • 00:32:30
    mentioned the 227 000 products pre-love
  • 00:32:34
programs that we we took back or both
  • 00:32:36
back and gave a new license and also
  • 00:32:38
told them we also had this circular lab
  • 00:32:40
in all our units here in Korea
  • 00:32:43
    um
  • 00:32:45
also there I am very positively
  • 00:32:47
surprised it's just how many people are
  • 00:32:49
    actually willing to buy pre-loved
  • 00:32:52
    products
  • 00:32:53
it is fantastic to see so this is a
  • 00:32:57
growing way faster and more than we
  • 00:33:01
    expected
  • 00:33:05
then we have equality diversity and
  • 00:33:07
    inclusion
  • 00:33:08
and for us to have an include inclusive
  • 00:33:11
    Society is really really important
  • 00:33:14
and here we look at each country that we
  • 00:33:17
go through what does it mean here
  • 00:33:19
what are the glass ceilings in this
  • 00:33:22
specific country which would be very
  • 00:33:24
different in Sweden compared to Korea
  • 00:33:26
    for example
  • 00:33:27
in Korea the first last evening is the
  • 00:33:29
agenda okay where business is still in
  • 00:33:33
our opinion a man's world so we need to
  • 00:33:36
secure equality there and we have now 54
  • 00:33:40
46 the agenda share when it comes to
  • 00:33:42
management positions in the company in
  • 00:33:43
    Korea
  • 00:33:46
    that is about the
  • 00:33:48
single unwed amounts that we have been
  • 00:33:51
working with for five years now to make
  • 00:33:53
sure that the group that is
  • 00:33:57
outside in Korea not always respected
  • 00:34:00
that they are taken care of we work
  • 00:34:02
    together with them
  • 00:34:04
and we are also starting working with
  • 00:34:07
    elderly people
  • 00:34:08
securing that elderly people that do not
  • 00:34:11
have an income that do not maybe have a
  • 00:34:13
safe unit in terms of family that we are
  • 00:34:15
there with them but we have a lot more
  • 00:34:16
    to do there
  • 00:34:19
and we have people with disabilities
  • 00:34:22
where we secure that we are minimum on
  • 00:34:24
the on the government level of security
  • 00:34:26
that you should answer to share of
  • 00:34:28
    release with disabilities
  • 00:34:30
and for us this is not a sacrifice it is
  • 00:34:32
we are very happy to do this and I would
  • 00:34:34
say that some of the most loyal people
  • 00:34:36
you can imagine are the people that
  • 00:34:38
    don't get equal opportunities elsewhere
  • 00:34:40
could you open up for those people they
  • 00:34:42
will love you more than anybody else
  • 00:34:44
because you are actually giving them a
  • 00:34:46
chance to show them through the art
  • 00:34:48
the last group I want to mentioned is
  • 00:34:50
    the lgbtq plus community
  • 00:34:53
that is also in Korea a very vulnerable
  • 00:34:56
group not respected neither by Family
  • 00:34:59
nor by societies but and here we do what
  • 00:35:03
we can we were actually the only company
  • 00:35:05
with the local in the Korean parade this
  • 00:35:09
    summer is old
  • 00:35:11
I hope soon that we will have more than
  • 00:35:13
a similar Journey as to sustainability
  • 00:35:16
five years ago we spoke about
  • 00:35:18
sustainability we felt very lovely very
  • 00:35:21
lonely today we have 500 companies
  • 00:35:24
wanted to talk sustainability with us
  • 00:35:25
and I hope that the same goes for lgbtq
  • 00:35:28
plus today we are very lonely
  • 00:35:31
but a few years down the down the road
  • 00:35:34
    we hope that they're not
  • 00:35:38
    um
  • 00:35:39
    and we have
  • 00:35:42
some people South Koreans not to
  • 00:35:44
remember that South Koreans that are
  • 00:35:45
actually openly gay and I'm very proud
  • 00:35:48
of that that we have in Korea people who
  • 00:35:51
can stand and say well I'm gay
  • 00:35:53
Korean people and that is unfortunately
  • 00:35:56
very unusual also in Korea I hope this
  • 00:35:59
is something something good that is
  • 00:36:01
    starting now
  • 00:36:02
is this good for our business probably
  • 00:36:04
    Maybe not maybe our time
  • 00:36:07
    um
  • 00:36:08
when we started posting some years ago
  • 00:36:10
on Instagram we expected 30 percent hate
  • 00:36:15
some neutral and the rest positive
  • 00:36:17
and now it's down to 10 hey don't they
  • 00:36:20
were being took when we post something
  • 00:36:21
    positive about LGBT to us
  • 00:36:24
so Society is somehow changing and I
  • 00:36:27
think that's very healthy and it feels
  • 00:36:28
great if we can play a small role and
  • 00:36:30
again be making Korea more inclusive
  • 00:36:37
    actions speak
  • 00:36:40
and I started saying that it's easy to
  • 00:36:43
make very Visionary plans and then
  • 00:36:46
    presentations
  • 00:36:48
and it's also very easy to try to
  • 00:36:49
impress people on what you've done
  • 00:36:51
and but I just want to re-stress here
  • 00:36:54
    that
  • 00:36:55
we have made lots of mistakes we will
  • 00:36:58
continue to make mistakes but the
  • 00:36:59
ambition and intention is there and it's
  • 00:37:02
very clear and there's no denial from
  • 00:37:05
our side that when the safety start and
  • 00:37:07
we welcome scrutiny from ngos and
  • 00:37:10
governments and so on and we're very
  • 00:37:12
happy to work together with that because
  • 00:37:13
we genuinely want to be positive force
  • 00:37:17
but we also know that if we don't take
  • 00:37:19
any risks and make statements of things
  • 00:37:21
we want to do if we don't take these
  • 00:37:24
    long decisions
  • 00:37:25
we will not move mountains either
  • 00:37:27
so I hope that what I've shown here
  • 00:37:30
    about the
  • 00:37:32
intentions we have but also what we've
  • 00:37:34
already delivered that you get the
  • 00:37:35
better understanding here that at least
  • 00:37:37
we are genuinely trying to do our best
  • 00:37:39
and we're not trying to impress anyone
  • 00:37:41
purely on what we're able to do but also
  • 00:37:43
be transparent about where we are
  • 00:37:49
so what does it take and this is not a
  • 00:37:52
summary of a truth this is our take so
  • 00:37:55
this is a chaos take what we believe it
  • 00:37:59
    takes to become china-positive
  • 00:38:02
and we think that the first one is about
  • 00:38:05
the importance of having a vision having
  • 00:38:08
a purpose and our vision to create a
  • 00:38:11
better every life for the many people
  • 00:38:13
that was written decades ago I think
  • 00:38:16
that it's actually more relevant than
  • 00:38:18
    later today
  • 00:38:21
so we know exactly why we exist then we
  • 00:38:23
also know that to be able to get there
  • 00:38:25
we need to make a certain profit so we
  • 00:38:27
can continue to expand and reach more of
  • 00:38:29
    the many people
  • 00:38:31
    of purpose is very clear
  • 00:38:34
that is about having a holistic view of
  • 00:38:37
    performance
  • 00:38:39
and when we look at Investments
  • 00:38:42
we always look at the business result
  • 00:38:45
how it impacts co-workers our team
  • 00:38:47
actually consumer and how it impacts the
  • 00:38:51
the company or profitability point of
  • 00:38:53
    view
  • 00:38:54
always looking at that that is is very
  • 00:38:56
important for us that you bring all
  • 00:38:59
    dimensions in
  • 00:39:01
you don't only look at the Top Line
  • 00:39:02
    because that is very short-sighted
  • 00:39:05
it might have worked some years ago
  • 00:39:08
but if you're a consumer brand and you
  • 00:39:10
don't have genuine intentions but you do
  • 00:39:12
it only for short-term profit you might
  • 00:39:15
not live very long so I think this is
  • 00:39:17
    the The New Normal
  • 00:39:19
    that is what integrated sustainability
  • 00:39:21
in the business to make sure that you
  • 00:39:23
always look at what is the additional
  • 00:39:25
carbon footprint or how can we offset
  • 00:39:27
the carbon footprint if we take a
  • 00:39:29
certain decision to say it's good for
  • 00:39:31
business is it also good for a planet if
  • 00:39:34
not what do we do and we don't have a
  • 00:39:36
mitigation plan we don't go for it then
  • 00:39:38
    we do something else instead
  • 00:39:41
    to always integrate sustainability into
  • 00:39:44
    decisions taken
  • 00:39:47
the fourth one is taxing dynamos and I I
  • 00:39:49
was onto it a little bit that
  • 00:39:52
many people believe and many companies
  • 00:39:54
say that we would like to be more
  • 00:39:57
sustainable but it costs too much money
  • 00:39:59
    we can't afford it
  • 00:40:02
we had the last 10 years been producing
  • 00:40:04
our carbon footprint year after year
  • 00:40:06
while we have increased our turnover in
  • 00:40:10
    our reach
  • 00:40:12
another example is the EB trucks to
  • 00:40:15
deliver guns to people's homes it's
  • 00:40:17
actually not more expensive specs for
  • 00:40:19
the plant is not more expensive so we
  • 00:40:22
need to get out of those
  • 00:40:24
made up truths and shown that no it is
  • 00:40:28
not true if you really sincerely go into
  • 00:40:31
it and you look into it and try to find
  • 00:40:33
    Solutions
  • 00:40:35
it is often a winning thing to be on the
  • 00:40:38
    side of sustainability
  • 00:40:40
I don't say it was 30 years ago but now
  • 00:40:43
    it is
  • 00:40:44
so we need to get away from this
  • 00:40:47
dilemmas where people could do things
  • 00:40:49
against each other that you actually go
  • 00:40:52
    hand in hand
  • 00:40:54
and then it's about taking action
  • 00:40:56
    together
  • 00:40:58
nobody can do everything but everybody
  • 00:40:59
    can do something
  • 00:41:01
how can we secure that we create
  • 00:41:03
    momentum behind sustainability
  • 00:41:07
and the better world how can we make
  • 00:41:09
    sure that ngos governments
  • 00:41:13
    consumers companies that we work
  • 00:41:16
together to really make sure that we
  • 00:41:17
    move mountains together because
  • 00:41:20
if you want to go fast you go alone but
  • 00:41:23
if you want to go far if you go together
  • 00:41:24
and I think that is where we want to
  • 00:41:26
know we want to go far speed is
  • 00:41:28
important but it's better that you can
  • 00:41:30
really reach our our long-term goals
  • 00:41:32
which for us and is 20 30 to be kind of
  • 00:41:35
    possible
  • 00:41:36
so this has been how we see the menu
  • 00:41:40
and we think also that the
  • 00:41:43
    it is
  • 00:41:45
a good business to vehicle business
  • 00:41:49
    again reducing our carbon footprint
  • 00:41:52
while other growth goes up at the same
  • 00:41:55
time as profit goes up not necessarily
  • 00:41:57
last year because we were holding back
  • 00:41:59
whenever so many price increases but
  • 00:42:01
overall and of course the extra bottom
  • 00:42:04
line 15 goes to the most vulnerable
  • 00:42:06
people in the world and the other 85
  • 00:42:08
close to making the business we're doing
  • 00:42:10
    even better
  • 00:42:12
    so
  • 00:42:14
doing your best for the planet
  • 00:42:17
we believe is good for your business
  • 00:42:25
    yeah
  • 00:42:26
    that was the presentation
  • 00:42:32
    [Applause]
