hello my name is douglas splock i'm an

    author and mental health educator
  • 00:00:03
    welcome to your depression recovery
  • 00:00:05
channel where each week we talk about
  • 00:00:06
    practical tools and coping strategies
  • 00:00:08
    for healing from depression anxiety
  • 00:00:11
in this video we're going to explore 10
  • 00:00:14
strategies that actually work to heal
  • 00:00:16
from depression before we do that we
  • 00:00:18
want to tell our regular joke and
  • 00:00:21
which knight invented the round table
  • 00:00:24
    why circumference of course
  • 00:00:28
that's my days of math teacher
  • 00:00:31
well recently i came across a very
  • 00:00:33
inspiring book called back from the
  • 00:00:35
brink matter of fact i've named some of
  • 00:00:36
my videos where i interview people from
  • 00:00:39
uh who've recovered from depression and
  • 00:00:41
    that's what this book does
  • 00:00:42
graham cowan the author is a depression
  • 00:00:44
    survivor like me
  • 00:00:46
and after he got through his ordeal he
  • 00:00:47
said well i want to see what worked for
  • 00:00:49
other people so he and interviewed a
  • 00:00:51
number of people some of which were
  • 00:00:52
celebrities and asked them the simple
  • 00:00:54
question what actually worked for you
  • 00:00:57
and then he wrote down the answers
  • 00:00:59
    in his interviews
  • 00:01:00
he discovered or observed that there
  • 00:01:02
    were certain strategies that were
  • 00:01:03
mentioned again and again and again
  • 00:01:07
and not surprisingly these are the very
  • 00:01:09
same strategies that i've been talking
  • 00:01:10
about for quarter century on my books
  • 00:01:12
    websites
  • 00:01:14
    podcasts youtube channel etc
  • 00:01:16
    so
  • 00:01:17
what i like to do now and i'm really
  • 00:01:19
really i really like this list i've come
  • 00:01:21
    up with is to
  • 00:01:22
share with you what i consider the 10
  • 00:01:24
    most effective strategies tools for
  • 00:01:27
    healing from depression anxiety
  • 00:01:28
improving your mood and these things
  • 00:01:30
    actually work
  • 00:01:31
they work because i've experienced them
  • 00:01:33
    my
  • 00:01:34
clients have or formed clients graham
  • 00:01:36
has you know they're all over the place
  • 00:01:38
but i wanted to condense them into 10
  • 00:01:41
    really straightforward simple strategies
  • 00:01:43
    that you can use
  • 00:01:44
to improve your mood and help yourself
  • 00:01:46
    feel better
  • 00:01:47
well here's number one on my list the
  • 00:01:49
most important one because it's the
  • 00:01:50
    starting point of all recovery
  • 00:01:52
and that is what i call setting the
  • 00:01:54
    intention to heal
  • 00:01:56
    and that is really simple
  • 00:01:58
it simply means making the decision that
  • 00:02:00
you want to get well even if you don't
  • 00:02:01
know how it's going to happen even if
  • 00:02:03
you don't think it's going to happen you
  • 00:02:04
still say to the universe i want to get
  • 00:02:06
well and the vehicle for doing this is
  • 00:02:09
to create what i call a vision statement
  • 00:02:11
    of wellness
  • 00:02:12
and in this vision statement you asked a
  • 00:02:14
simple question what would my life look
  • 00:02:16
and feel like if i were
  • 00:02:17
free from the symptoms of anxiety and
  • 00:02:19
depression like what thoughts would i be
  • 00:02:20
having what whatever you're feeling what
  • 00:02:23
would my relationships be like what
  • 00:02:25
would i be doing for work etc and when
  • 00:02:27
you've asked these questions you take
  • 00:02:28
the answers and write them down maybe in
  • 00:02:30
    a paragraph or two
  • 00:02:32
and this creates what i call a mental
  • 00:02:34
blueprint for recovery and if you look
  • 00:02:36
at that and put energy on a regular
  • 00:02:38
basis you will attract the recovery
  • 00:02:40
    you're seeking
  • 00:02:41
now this is so important i did a whole
  • 00:02:43
video on it called setting the intention
  • 00:02:44
to heal and it's the first week of my
  • 00:02:47
12-week recovery program in my book
  • 00:02:49
    healing from depression
  • 00:02:51
number two on my list of
  • 00:02:53
10 strategies that actually work the
  • 00:02:55
heal from depression should come as no
  • 00:02:57
    surprise exercise something i've been
  • 00:02:59
    preaching forever
  • 00:03:02
    it's nature's antidepressant and
  • 00:03:04
    everybody from psychiatrists to
  • 00:03:06
alternative healers agree this is the
  • 00:03:07
case so turns out if you do moderately
  • 00:03:10
strenuous exercise when you break a
  • 00:03:11
sweat for at least 16 minutes this has a
  • 00:03:14
    tremendous effect against depression and
  • 00:03:17
promoting a good mood so you can run you
  • 00:03:20
    can swim you can walk
  • 00:03:22
garden pump iron whatever it does to get
  • 00:03:24
your heart rate up is something you
  • 00:03:26
    enjoy and
  • 00:03:28
    now in the
  • 00:03:29
21st century there are these wonderful
  • 00:03:31
    technologies these trackers like what
  • 00:03:34
fitbit garmin activity track or apple
  • 00:03:36
watch that will track your activity
  • 00:03:38
tell you what's going on and give you
  • 00:03:40
the rewards that you're seeking from
  • 00:03:41
doing all that wonderful hard work
  • 00:03:44
my third effective strategy that works
  • 00:03:47
for sure in healing from depression
  • 00:03:49
    is uh social support
  • 00:03:51
as i said in my video on happiness we
  • 00:03:54
    human beings are social animals
  • 00:03:56
and therefore we feel better when we're
  • 00:03:57
connected to other folks and by the way
  • 00:03:59
    this includes pets
  • 00:04:01
oh yes uh i have a whole video on that
  • 00:04:04
and it's amazing how many people are so
  • 00:04:06
bonded with their pets even more than
  • 00:04:07
people that the pets will even keep them
  • 00:04:10
here when they're thinking of harming
  • 00:04:11
    themselves so
  • 00:04:12
    pets are really important ascension
  • 00:04:14
    beings
  • 00:04:15
for social support and the other benefit
  • 00:04:17
is that of social support is if you have
  • 00:04:19
somebody around you who believes in your
  • 00:04:20
recovery it's so easy to give up feel
  • 00:04:23
hopeless one of the cardinal symptoms of
  • 00:04:25
depression and to feel like you'll never
  • 00:04:27
get better but another person or group
  • 00:04:29
of people can do what i call hold the
  • 00:04:31
    hope
  • 00:04:32
and see a vision of recovery and belief
  • 00:04:34
for it when you can't believe it for
  • 00:04:36
    yourself so
  • 00:04:37
if you don't have family and friends who
  • 00:04:39
can do that you can find a therapist
  • 00:04:40
    join a support group
  • 00:04:42
    what else
  • 00:04:44
you might have social connections in
  • 00:04:45
your spiritual community or even do
  • 00:04:47
    volunteer work so
  • 00:04:50
it is important to have other people
  • 00:04:51
around you to help you heal
  • 00:04:54
    the fourth effective strategy
  • 00:04:56
for healing from depression uh that i've
  • 00:04:59
used other people have especially our
  • 00:05:00
friends in recovery is to live one day
  • 00:05:02
    at a time
  • 00:05:04
now this is especially helpful when
  • 00:05:05
you're looking to the future and feel
  • 00:05:07
overwhelmed by you know how am i going
  • 00:05:08
to get better it feels hopeless
  • 00:05:10
no you just focus on today and
  • 00:05:13
you ask yourself when you get up okay
  • 00:05:14
what can i do just today just for today
  • 00:05:17
step by step to get through the next 24
  • 00:05:19
    hours
  • 00:05:21
and then do what needs to be done you
  • 00:05:22
don't need a grand scheme of recovery
  • 00:05:24
you don't need to know the details
  • 00:05:26
of how things will work out
  • 00:05:29
you just need to figure out how to get
  • 00:05:30
through the day and you know what if you
  • 00:05:32
can get through one day you can make it
  • 00:05:34
    through your entire ordeal
  • 00:05:36
if you can survive for one day you can
  • 00:05:38
survive the entire process and one day
  • 00:05:41
you'll wake up and as um
  • 00:05:43
this very famous uh seaman named google
  • 00:05:46
robertson said in his book on surviving
  • 00:05:48
    a shipwreck he said
  • 00:05:49
    uh rescue will come
  • 00:05:53
    as a welcome
  • 00:05:54
interruption of the survival journey a
  • 00:05:56
    welcome interruption
  • 00:05:58
i had a time when i was absolutely in
  • 00:06:00
despair i went to a support meeting and
  • 00:06:03
72 hours later i felt better you never
  • 00:06:05
    know what tomorrow may bring
  • 00:06:07
my next strategy number five on the hit
  • 00:06:09
    parade
  • 00:06:10
is creating structure and routine in
  • 00:06:13
your life remember i just mentioned live
  • 00:06:14
one day at a time well
  • 00:06:16
in order to do that you have to have
  • 00:06:17
something to focus on during the day
  • 00:06:19
otherwise you'll just sit and be you
  • 00:06:21
know overwhelmed by your own rumination
  • 00:06:23
and worries so this means setting up a
  • 00:06:25
series of do-able strategies or doable
  • 00:06:27
activities that you can focus on hour by
  • 00:06:29
    hour
  • 00:06:31
this can include you know working at a
  • 00:06:33
job if you're fortunate enough to have
  • 00:06:34
    one or doing volunteer work
  • 00:06:36
uh having a meal with a friend spending
  • 00:06:38
    time in nature
  • 00:06:40
uh going to the gym you know taking a
  • 00:06:42
    classes something interesting there's
  • 00:06:43
    about 30 or 40
  • 00:06:45
and i have them listed on my website
  • 00:06:47
overcoming suicidal pain because it has
  • 00:06:49
    been proven
  • 00:06:50
again and again and from my life
  • 00:06:52
    particularly
  • 00:06:53
    that having structure and routine
  • 00:06:55
    relieves depression and relieves anxiety
  • 00:06:59
it gives you something to focus on the
  • 00:07:00
outside world and it actually has a
  • 00:07:02
calming effect on the nervous system so
  • 00:07:05
    remember
  • 00:07:06
    strategy number five create structure
  • 00:07:08
    and routine in your life
  • 00:07:10
number six and my effective strategies
  • 00:07:12
for treating depression or healing from
  • 00:07:13
    depression
  • 00:07:15
    is finding the right
  • 00:07:16
    therapist or a prescriber
  • 00:07:19
    now
  • 00:07:20
    even though
  • 00:07:21
friends and family can help you out
  • 00:07:23
    anything from depression sometimes more
  • 00:07:25
    is needed
  • 00:07:26
just as someone with a serious infection
  • 00:07:28
needs to be seen by a doctor if you have
  • 00:07:30
    a severe case of
  • 00:07:31
    depression you also need professional
  • 00:07:33
    support
  • 00:07:35
    and
  • 00:07:36
depression is a treatable condition just
  • 00:07:38
like an infection is and when approached
  • 00:07:40
    through finding a good therapist
  • 00:07:41
    psychotherapist and sometimes medication
  • 00:07:44
now when that doesn't work there are
  • 00:07:46
other therapies you know kind of like
  • 00:07:47
bringing the troops right that you can
  • 00:07:49
try when you have a treatment resistant
  • 00:07:51
    depression such as
  • 00:07:53
    transcranial magnesium magnetic
  • 00:07:55
stimulation that's a mouthful tms or
  • 00:07:58
    ect electro convulsive therapy ketamine
  • 00:08:01
and now in oregon at least they are
  • 00:08:03
    experimenting with using psilocybin
  • 00:08:05
therapy for treating depression it's now
  • 00:08:07
being evaluated by the fda so there are
  • 00:08:09
all sorts of things you can use
  • 00:08:11
and as i jokingly tell my friends
  • 00:08:12
there's never been a better time to be
  • 00:08:14
    mentally ill than today
  • 00:08:17
number seven of effective strategies to
  • 00:08:20
treat depression heal from depression is
  • 00:08:22
    changing your negative thinking
  • 00:08:25
    people who
  • 00:08:26
    have a depression
  • 00:08:28
have a negative filter through which
  • 00:08:30
they experience the world they have a
  • 00:08:32
negative view of themselves and they get
  • 00:08:33
    a view
  • 00:08:34
    of
  • 00:08:35
their circumstances and negative view of
  • 00:08:37
the future as comedian lily tomlin once
  • 00:08:40
said things will get worse before they
  • 00:08:42
    get worse
  • 00:08:44
    fortunately there's a therapy that's
  • 00:08:45
been around for a while called cognitive
  • 00:08:47
behavioral therapy cbt many of you have
  • 00:08:49
    heard of it
  • 00:08:50
and it's pretty simple they say if you
  • 00:08:52
can change the way you think you'll
  • 00:08:53
change the way you feel so they identify
  • 00:08:56
    ten thinking errors or cognitive
  • 00:08:58
    distortions
  • 00:08:59
and the whole point of cbt is to
  • 00:09:01
identify your thinking errors like i'll
  • 00:09:03
always be this way i'll never get better
  • 00:09:05
what a shmo am i right and replace them
  • 00:09:08
with more rational realistic beliefs and
  • 00:09:10
as you replace the negative beliefs
  • 00:09:12
slowly you start to feel better
  • 00:09:14
lots of books on cbt i talk about in my
  • 00:09:16
book healing from depression and i've
  • 00:09:18
done a couple videos very powerful
  • 00:09:20
    therapy simple but powerful
  • 00:09:22
    to change your negative thinking
  • 00:09:24
number eight on my list of effective
  • 00:09:26
    strategies for healing from depression
  • 00:09:28
is getting a good night's sleep
  • 00:09:31
    easier said than done right
  • 00:09:32
    according to sleep researcher matthew
  • 00:09:34
walker who wrote a really cool book
  • 00:09:36
called sleep is your superpower and did
  • 00:09:37
a ted talk by the same name
  • 00:09:40
the reason we sleep is because this is
  • 00:09:42
    when the brain
  • 00:09:44
    clears out the toxins
  • 00:09:46
and renews and regenerates itself it's
  • 00:09:48
    so essential to feeling good
  • 00:09:50
    especially for people with depression
  • 00:09:51
because sleep disruptions are a major
  • 00:09:53
    symptom this means
  • 00:09:55
    failure to get to sleep
  • 00:09:57
but more importantly waking up in the
  • 00:09:58
middle of the night and not getting back
  • 00:10:00
    to sleep that is
  • 00:10:01
can become really hell i did a whole
  • 00:10:03
video on that called what happens if
  • 00:10:05
    it's 4 a.m and you can't get back to
  • 00:10:07
sleep so how do you deal with this well
  • 00:10:08
first you practice something called good
  • 00:10:10
sleep hygiene which are good habits
  • 00:10:12
around sleep like going to bed and
  • 00:10:14
getting up at the same time not drinking
  • 00:10:16
    coffee
  • 00:10:17
after 3 p.m you know cutting down on
  • 00:10:19
screen time before bed keeping your room
  • 00:10:22
    dark and cool
  • 00:10:23
and also there are some medications that
  • 00:10:25
are uh can be effective healing from
  • 00:10:27
depression i mean and what i mean is
  • 00:10:29
getting a good night's sleep and they
  • 00:10:31
are uh not some of them are non-habit
  • 00:10:34
forming so i did a whole video on
  • 00:10:35
medications to heal insomnia but again
  • 00:10:38
we need to do everything we can to make
  • 00:10:40
sure we get good rest because that is
  • 00:10:42
essential for physical health and mental
  • 00:10:44
health number nine on my list of ten
  • 00:10:47
strategies to heal from depression that
  • 00:10:49
actually work is what i call spiritual
  • 00:10:51
    connection
  • 00:10:53
uh i have used many times when i've been
  • 00:10:56
desperate and despairing tapping into my
  • 00:10:58
spirituality and by that i mean feeling
  • 00:11:00
a part of an intelligence that's greater
  • 00:11:02
    than yourself
  • 00:11:04
and i believe that this intelligence is
  • 00:11:06
benevolent you can call upon it in your
  • 00:11:07
    time of need
  • 00:11:09
and in some sense it's always looking
  • 00:11:11
    out for you so
  • 00:11:12
you can tap into your spirituality
  • 00:11:14
    through prayer meditation finding
  • 00:11:16
purpose and meaning in your life
  • 00:11:17
    spending time in nature
  • 00:11:19
    becoming involved in spiritual community
  • 00:11:21
    and it was this involvement
  • 00:11:23
almost 25 years ago on july 14 1997 that
  • 00:11:27
a spiritual community came together when
  • 00:11:29
i was at my west end held a vision of
  • 00:11:32
    love and healing for me
  • 00:11:33
and that actually helped me get better
  • 00:11:34
so i know from personal experience how
  • 00:11:36
spirituality can be healing and i hope
  • 00:11:38
you'll find your own ways to connect
  • 00:11:40
with it the tenth and perhaps most
  • 00:11:44
    important uh
  • 00:11:46
strategy that works for healing from
  • 00:11:47
depression is what i call perseverance
  • 00:11:50
    and persistence
  • 00:11:52
    overcoming depression
  • 00:11:54
is the hardest thing i've ever had to do
  • 00:11:57
this is partially because uh we're in a
  • 00:11:59
stage in psychiatry that's still pretty
  • 00:12:01
    primitive we don't know
  • 00:12:03
    what treatments will work uh
  • 00:12:05
how long they take to work so there's a
  • 00:12:07
lot of trauma and a lot of just it takes
  • 00:12:09
    a long time
  • 00:12:11
but i found a quotation by matt higg
  • 00:12:14
from his wonderful book reasons to stay
  • 00:12:16
alive that have been very helpful to me
  • 00:12:18
    he says
  • 00:12:20
minds have their own weather systems
  • 00:12:21
    you're in a hurricane
  • 00:12:23
hurricanes run out of energy eventually
  • 00:12:26
    hold on
  • 00:12:28
what matt is saying is if we can just
  • 00:12:30
hold on and keep persevering and
  • 00:12:32
persisting and moving forward in spite
  • 00:12:34
    of the difficulties we face
  • 00:12:36
    then one day
  • 00:12:37
our ordeal will end as my friend julie
  • 00:12:39
said about her suicidal depression i
  • 00:12:41
just had to wait it out
