摘要

  • 00:00:00
Good morning. Hank, it's Tuesday. So, my
  • 00:00:01
    book, Everything Is Tuberculosis, has
  • 00:00:02
been on the New York Times bestseller
  • 00:00:04
list for 14 consecutive weeks, which is
  • 00:00:06
astonishing to me. Like, that's twice as
  • 00:00:08
long as my previous book, The
  • 00:00:09
    Anthroposine Reviewed, was on the
  • 00:00:10
bestseller list. And uh this is a book
  • 00:00:12
    about tuberculosis. So, it's wonderful
  • 00:00:14
to know that Everything is TV, is
  • 00:00:16
continuing to find so many readers. But
  • 00:00:17
what does that actually mean? Like, what
  • 00:00:19
does it mean to be a New York Times
  • 00:00:20
    bestseller? Does that mean you're
  • 00:00:21
    selling 12 books a week, 1,200, 12,000?
  • 00:00:24
Well, it depends. So, first off,
  • 00:00:25
Everything is Tuberculosis is called a
  • 00:00:27
number one New York Times bestseller
  • 00:00:29
because for the first couple weeks after
  • 00:00:30
its release, it was the number one
  • 00:00:32
    best-selling non-fiction book in the
  • 00:00:34
United States, at least according to the
  • 00:00:36
    obscure and somewhat opaque tabulations
  • 00:00:38
of the New York Times, which involved
  • 00:00:40
    asking lots of bookstores toward
  • 00:00:42
    independent ones what's selling each
  • 00:00:44
    week. Everything is tuberculosis was
  • 00:00:45
almost guaranteed to be a number one New
  • 00:00:47
York Times bestseller because I signed
  • 00:00:49
over a 100,000 copies of the first
  • 00:00:50
printing and also a ton of people
  • 00:00:52
pre-ordered it like a 50,000 and if you
  • 00:00:55
sell 50,000 books in a single week,
  • 00:00:57
you're almost guaranteed to be a number
  • 00:00:58
one New York Times bestseller unless
  • 00:01:00
you're up against something like the
  • 00:01:01
Hunger Games. But I wasn't up against
  • 00:01:03
The Hunger Games, even though the new
  • 00:01:04
Hunger Games book came out the same day
  • 00:01:06
as mine because that book is fiction for
  • 00:01:08
kids whereas my book is non-fiction for
  • 00:01:11
adults. And there is more than one New
  • 00:01:13
York Times bestseller list. There's the
  • 00:01:14
non-fiction list, but there's also the
  • 00:01:16
advice how-to and miscellaneous list and
  • 00:01:18
graphic novel lists and audio book lists
  • 00:01:21
and so on. So, actually just this week
  • 00:01:23
there are 15 different number one New
  • 00:01:25
York Times bestsellers. And some of
  • 00:01:27
those books sell or 8,000 copies in a
  • 00:01:30
week. I think the Hunger Games book sold
  • 00:01:32
750,000 copies in a week. So, number one
  • 00:01:35
    New York Times bestseller doesn't
  • 00:01:36
actually tell you that much about sales.
  • 00:01:38
What it tells you is sales relative to
  • 00:01:40
its category. And over the course of a
  • 00:01:42
year, there will be hundreds of
  • 00:01:43
different number one New York Times
  • 00:01:45
bestseller. So you might think of it as
  • 00:01:46
    a kind of unimpressive accomplishment.
  • 00:01:48
Like you might go to Walmart and see
  • 00:01:49
that almost every book there says number
  • 00:01:51
one New York Times bestseller. But it's
  • 00:01:53
important to remember almost no books
  • 00:01:55
end up in Walmart. About 85% of
  • 00:01:58
    traditionally published books, like
  • 00:01:59
books published by big publishers, sell
  • 00:02:01
fewer than 5,000 copies. And only about
  • 00:02:04
    0.4%
  • 00:02:05
sell more than a 100,000. My first
  • 00:02:07
novel, Looking for Alaska, was widely
  • 00:02:09
reviewed and won a major award and never
  • 00:02:11
came anywhere close the New York Times
  • 00:02:14
bestseller list, at least not until the
  • 00:02:15
success of The Fall in Our Stars many
  • 00:02:17
years later. So, just to be clear, the
  • 00:02:19
vast vast majority of books published by
  • 00:02:22
major publishers don't become New York
  • 00:02:24
Times bestsellers. And even for those
  • 00:02:26
that do, while New York Times bestseller
  • 00:02:27
is certainly a career milestone and an
  • 00:02:29
important designation, it it isn't like
  • 00:02:32
    necessarily life-changing money. I first
  • 00:02:34
reached the New York Times bestseller
  • 00:02:35
list with my third novel, Paper Towns,
  • 00:02:37
which spent three weeks on the young
  • 00:02:38
adult hardcover list and sold about
  • 00:02:40
20,000 copies during those three weeks.
  • 00:02:42
Now, that's a lot of books and it meant
  • 00:02:44
I made a lot of money in those three
  • 00:02:45
weeks, but then it fell off the list.
  • 00:02:47
And in total, the hard cover of Paper
  • 00:02:49
Towns made around $105,000, which again
  • 00:02:52
is a lot of money, but it did take 3
  • 00:02:54
years to write the book. So, that was
  • 00:02:55
    about $35,000 a year. Now listen, that's
  • 00:02:58
a modest living just from writing, which
  • 00:03:00
is incredible, but it might be less than
  • 00:03:02
you expect from the phrase New York
  • 00:03:03
    Times bestseller. Sometimes New York
  • 00:03:05
    Times bestsellers involve selling 10,000
  • 00:03:08
copies a week for like 200 weeks in a
  • 00:03:11
row, in which case you become quite
  • 00:03:12
    wealthy. Sometimes it involves selling
  • 00:03:15
1500 copies a week for one week, in
  • 00:03:17
which case you don't. Then there's the
  • 00:03:19
famous quirkiness of the New York Times
  • 00:03:21
    list itself. Books that objectively
  • 00:03:23
should be on the list sometimes aren't
  • 00:03:24
either because they don't sell well at
  • 00:03:25
    independent bookstores or because they
  • 00:03:27
were published too long ago or for
  • 00:03:29
obscure reasons that no one understands.
  • 00:03:31
If you really want to see what's like
  • 00:03:32
selling overall each week, the USA Today
  • 00:03:35
list combines all books and gives you a
  • 00:03:37
pretty good sense of where things are.
  • 00:03:39
Like on that list, Everything is
  • 00:03:40
tuberculosis is number 80 right now. Uh
  • 00:03:43
whereas on the New York Times
  • 00:03:44
non-fiction list, it's number six. Now,
  • 00:03:46
to be fair to the New York Times, only
  • 00:03:48
five of those 79 books that are in front
  • 00:03:50
of everything as tuberculosis would be
  • 00:03:52
considered uh for the non-fiction list.
  • 00:03:53
So, it's actually pretty accurate in
  • 00:03:55
that way, but that's not always the
  • 00:03:57
case. Also, there are other lists like
  • 00:03:58
    the independent book sellers bestseller
  • 00:04:00
list where uh right now everything is
  • 00:04:01
    tuberculosis is number two, which
  • 00:04:03
    reminds me, thank you independent
  • 00:04:05
    bookstores. And speaking of independent
  • 00:04:07
bookstores, if you only read New York
  • 00:04:08
Times bestsellers, you're missing out on
  • 00:04:10
a lot of the breadth and quality of
  • 00:04:13
books in the world today. Like my
  • 00:04:15
favorite way to read is to get
  • 00:04:16
    recommendations from book sellers and
  • 00:04:18
librarians and other people who've read
  • 00:04:19
a lot more than I ever will. Like that's
  • 00:04:21
how I've discovered some of my favorite
  • 00:04:23
books. I didn't find out about Paul
  • 00:04:24
Batty's Tough or Morin Johnson's early
  • 00:04:26
books because they were bestsellers. I
  • 00:04:28
found out about them because they were
  • 00:04:29
recommended to me by librarians and book
  • 00:04:31
sellers. And some of my favorite books
  • 00:04:32
are among those 85% that sold fewer than
  • 00:04:35
5,000 copies. So, at the risk of
  • 00:04:37
undermining my own career, I really
  • 00:04:39
encourage you to read both on and off
  • 00:04:42
the bestseller list. I've tried to
  • 00:04:44
answer most of the questions I commonly
  • 00:04:46
get about the New York Times bestseller
  • 00:04:47
list, but if you have more, leave them
  • 00:04:49
in comments and I'll try to be there.
