  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

In this week's Principles of Management class, the instructor explains that it's the hardest week due to the five chapters to cover. The instructor shares details about attending a conference next week which could affect the usual Tech live session, but tries to reassure students with possible solutions like merging sessions and communicating through email or announcements. There is also a clarification on the recording process for the sessions.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The instructor explains the grading process in this online course, emphasizing flexibility with due dates. Typically, initial discussion posts are due Thursday, and everything else, including reflections and response posts, is due Sunday. Grading usually begins the following Monday and completes before the next class session on Wednesday. The instructor responds to student concerns about late submissions and grading timelines while explaining their scheduling challenges, especially with the upcoming conference.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

The instructor discusses Warriors Connect—a communication tool similar to social media for Indiana Tech students—and shares its importance, particularly in emergencies, like an instance when a campus incident was communicated through the platform. Students are encouraged to connect on it, while the instructor highlights the relevance of Warriors Connect for dispersing important notifications to students. There's a shift to discussing what motivates students at work.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:20:00

The conversation transitions into discussing what makes a good workday and what motivates students. Most responses are centered around personal satisfaction, family welfare, and financial aspects. Despite research indicating otherwise, money is frequently mentioned as a motivator by students. The instructor introduces Herzberg's study, interlinking discussions on job satisfaction and motivation with examples from students' current jobs and responsibilities.

  • 00:20:00 - 00:25:00

The discussion on motivation continues with some students finding their job motivating due to aspects like meaningfulness, relationships with clients, or mission alignment. The importance of understanding personal and team motivators is emphasized for management. Students reflect on what initially attracted them to their jobs; responses include convenience, personal interests, company mission, and family considerations. The need for managers to learn about their team's motivators is highlighted.

  • 00:25:00 - 00:30:00

The class delves into the differences between mission and vision statements. Students are prompted to differentiate between the two, with the instructor offering clarity: missions define current purpose, and visions forecast future goals. The discussion briefly covers leadership qualities, focusing on the ability to have a vision for the future. The instructor ties this into the broader context of strategic planning and organizational analysis, segueing into SWOT analysis.

  • 00:30:00 - 00:35:00

The instructor introduces SWOT analysis—Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats—as a strategic tool used to assess a company’s current position and future potential. Students explore strengths, identifying factors like high production and strong brand, and weaknesses such as high turnover. Opportunities might include new markets or products, while threats could be competitive pressures or economic changes. The SWOT analysis is framed as essential for strategizing organizational growth.

  • 00:35:00 - 00:40:00

The class examines how to develop SWOT analysis through collecting relevant information from sources like employee feedback or market research. There’s a distinction between internal factors (strengths and weaknesses) and external factors (opportunities and threats). Emphasis is placed on validating and cross-referencing information before building strategic plans. Classroom conversation underscores the importance of adjusting strategies based on dynamic external and internal influences.

  • 00:40:00 - 00:45:00

The instructor explains the importance of measuring strategy effectiveness, suggesting that organizations periodically review and adjust their strategies in response to internal and external changes. Elements of SWOT are listed, and the functions of each are reiterated, emphasizing the need to adapt to external pressures and internal weaknesses to sustain growth. The instructor highlights periodic SWOT analysis as vital for long-term success in aligning strategy with changing conditions.

  • 00:45:00 - 00:50:00

The instructor raises a discussion around the use of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Claude for tasks like document evaluation and generating ideas. Students are encouraged to use AI for their studies as it can perform data analysis and repetitive tasks efficiently. Emphasis is put on the potential errors with AI, and the need to review AI-generated output carefully to ensure accuracy. The instructor provides a brief introduction to prompting best practices for AI use.

  • 00:50:00 - 00:59:27

As the session wraps up, there's a recap of using AI in strategic tasks like SWOT analysis, highlighting its utility in generating insights quickly. The instructor encourages students to explore AI further to enhance learning and efficiency. A final code word ‘SWOT’ is chosen for the session, and students are reminded to stay updated via announcements for any changes to next week's schedule due to the instructor's conference. The class concludes with well-wishes for the next meeting.

  • 00:00:03
    well welcome to week
  • 00:00:07
    four this
  • 00:00:11
week in principles of management is the
  • 00:00:15
hardest week because we have the most
  • 00:00:19
    chapters so 8 9 10 11 and 14 five
  • 00:00:23
chapters this week so like I said this
  • 00:00:25
is the hardest week it'll start
  • 00:00:28
    lightening up after
  • 00:00:30
this week so just hang in there just
  • 00:00:33
    hang in
  • 00:00:34
there all right couple things I need to
  • 00:00:36
    talk to you
  • 00:00:38
about one thing is next week I will be
  • 00:00:43
in Colorado Springs Colorado for a
  • 00:00:45
    conference Monday Tuesday Wednesday and
  • 00:00:48
Thursday so that means I'll be there
  • 00:00:52
during our night for Tech live there's a
  • 00:00:55
twoh hour time difference so a six
  • 00:00:58
o'clock start there is four o'clock in
  • 00:01:01
the afternoon and I think I'm still in
  • 00:01:04
session so I might have to try to find a
  • 00:01:08
way to maybe have one session that you
  • 00:01:12
all all three sections can join on
  • 00:01:16
to I think there's a way that I can do
  • 00:01:18
that in canvas but I believe it means
  • 00:01:24
that you're not going to have your
  • 00:01:27
typical Link in big blue button I might
  • 00:01:30
have to email the link to you or you
  • 00:01:31
know put it out as an announcement or
  • 00:01:34
something like that and then I'll have
  • 00:01:36
to take the recording and embed the
  • 00:01:38
    recording into the course somehow
  • 00:01:43
so I think that might be the best thing
  • 00:01:45
because otherwise we're not going to be
  • 00:01:47
able to have our session until Friday
  • 00:01:49
and I don't know that I want to bother
  • 00:01:52
anybody on a Friday night so that is
  • 00:01:56
    where I'm
  • 00:01:58
leaning um but let me check my
  • 00:02:01
    conference schedule because maybe there
  • 00:02:03
might be something going on at 4:00 that
  • 00:02:06
may not be absolutely necessary but I'm
  • 00:02:09
feeling like there is I thought I looked
  • 00:02:11
at the conference schedule a couple days
  • 00:02:13
ago and it looked pretty packed so keep
  • 00:02:16
an eye on your email keep an eye on the
  • 00:02:18
announcements that's where I'm going to
  • 00:02:21
post information session next week you
  • 00:02:24
    got
  • 00:02:27
it um Hannah's asking is it the same
  • 00:02:30
process as far as rewatching it no what
  • 00:02:33
from what I understand when I take the
  • 00:02:36
recording and I embed it back into
  • 00:02:38
canvas it can't go under concluded
  • 00:02:41
conferences because it wasn't a started
  • 00:02:44
    conference in our
  • 00:02:45
    course so it's I I can't remember what
  • 00:02:49
they call it it's some kind of feature
  • 00:02:50
    in canvas
  • 00:02:52
that it's it's outside of our course is
  • 00:02:56
where where it's happening so like I
  • 00:02:58
said we have we'll have our meeting
  • 00:02:59
outside side of the course and then I'll
  • 00:03:01
bring it back into the course but I
  • 00:03:04
    think I'm going to link
  • 00:03:06
it probably in module five it'll be in
  • 00:03:11
module five I'll I'll link it in there
  • 00:03:13
so you won't go to big Bo Buton but I'll
  • 00:03:15
    put instructions hopefully this won't
  • 00:03:18
foul everybody up and get everybody
  • 00:03:20
super confused but this is what I'm
  • 00:03:22
hoping to do to still be able to have
  • 00:03:23
    our meeting
  • 00:03:26
okay so hope hopefully it'll go
  • 00:03:31
well all right let's start out with
  • 00:03:34
    questions what questions do you
  • 00:03:38
have anything going on anything you want
  • 00:03:41
    to ask
  • 00:03:49
about I yes Erin I will as soon as I get
  • 00:03:52
it figured out which will probably be
  • 00:03:54
tomorrow then I will put it in the
  • 00:03:56
    announcements of exactly what we're
  • 00:03:58
going to do for next week's Tech live
  • 00:04:02
yeah that's why I said keep an eye on
  • 00:04:04
the announcements keep an eye on your
  • 00:04:05
email but whenever I put something out
  • 00:04:08
to announcements it should be copying
  • 00:04:10
    your Indiana Tech
  • 00:04:12
email am I am I correct in saying that
  • 00:04:15
because I get the email so I think you
  • 00:04:16
guys should get the email as
  • 00:04:24
well that's what I'm hoping anyway so
  • 00:04:27
then you don't have to go out so okay
  • 00:04:29
    good good good good
  • 00:04:30
good another thing I want to bring up I
  • 00:04:33
have so many students emailing me about
  • 00:04:36
grading and grades and I absolutely love
  • 00:04:40
that you guys are are conscientious
  • 00:04:43
    students you're concerned about your
  • 00:04:44
grade because if you're asking me I know
  • 00:04:46
you're concerned about your grade and
  • 00:04:47
you should be and you should be
  • 00:04:49
advocating for yourself and you should
  • 00:04:51
    be
  • 00:04:52
wondering why out there so I like that
  • 00:04:57
you're you're coming to me and asking
  • 00:04:58
but I would just want to make sure that
  • 00:05:01
you understand when I grade and I I do
  • 00:05:04
this because of the flexibility that I
  • 00:05:06
    build into the course
  • 00:05:09
so all right you we're in week let me
  • 00:05:12
see if I can explain it this way we're
  • 00:05:13
in week four right now and it's
  • 00:05:16
Wednesday so this is how typically the
  • 00:05:20
the grades and the due dates work in
  • 00:05:22
courses so for our online courses at
  • 00:05:25
Indiana Tech you have the initial
  • 00:05:29
discussion board that's supposed to be
  • 00:05:31
due on Thursday so by tomorrow you're
  • 00:05:33
supposed to post your initial discussion
  • 00:05:37
    remember I don't follow this it's it's a
  • 00:05:39
pacing guide for you for you to be out
  • 00:05:41
there but I'm not going to jump in
  • 00:05:42
tomorrow and start grading and see who
  • 00:05:45
turned things in because you have until
  • 00:05:46
midnight and I'm not even going to do it
  • 00:05:47
Friday I don't even like to grade the
  • 00:05:50
discussion board too early because I
  • 00:05:52
told you how wonky gets when you when I
  • 00:05:55
grade your initial post and not your
  • 00:05:56
response post it doesn't alert me which
  • 00:05:59
by the way found out that's going to be
  • 00:06:01
corrected in canvas I don't know when
  • 00:06:03
the release is it's in beta mode right
  • 00:06:05
now but so you are eventually going to
  • 00:06:08
see a change in canvas with how the
  • 00:06:09
discussion boards look um so they're
  • 00:06:12
basically pulling them apart that you
  • 00:06:15
it's going to be the initial post will
  • 00:06:17
be one assignment and the responses will
  • 00:06:20
be another assignment and that will take
  • 00:06:21
care of this little craziness that I've
  • 00:06:24
been having with the discussion board
  • 00:06:26
but anyway for now I don't like grading
  • 00:06:28
    too early
  • 00:06:30
so the everything else in the course is
  • 00:06:32
usually due on Sunday that is our our
  • 00:06:34
those are our two due dates in our
  • 00:06:38
online courses again I'm not you know I
  • 00:06:41
don't follow these due dates to the
  • 00:06:42
letter it's a pacing guide for you guys
  • 00:06:45
so everything else will be due in Sunday
  • 00:06:48
so that's if you do the MCA if you do
  • 00:06:50
the tech live reflection the discussion
  • 00:06:53
    board everything's the second the
  • 00:06:55
    response discussion board everything
  • 00:06:57
    else is due on Sunday
  • 00:06:59
again Sunday by midnight so I'm not in
  • 00:07:01
    there Sunday typically grading sometimes
  • 00:07:04
you'll see me go out and I'll just say
  • 00:07:06
hey who's posted the reflection and I
  • 00:07:08
I'll grade real quickly but not always
  • 00:07:11
do I do that so I usually start grading
  • 00:07:15
on Monday so the week after the day
  • 00:07:17
after everything is due so I get a
  • 00:07:19
little bit done Monday and it depends
  • 00:07:21
like I've got a full day of work too
  • 00:07:23
like you guys do right so it depends
  • 00:07:26
like what can I sneak in during the day
  • 00:07:28
maybe my lunch hour um maybe if the guys
  • 00:07:30
are watching football I might get on
  • 00:07:32
Monday night and do a little bit of
  • 00:07:33
grading um and that same thing happens
  • 00:07:36
on Tuesday and the same thing happens on
  • 00:07:38
Wednesday so I try to be completely
  • 00:07:40
caught up on grading before this class
  • 00:07:43
so a lot of you guys are like hey I
  • 00:07:45
turned something in I didn't see and
  • 00:07:46
especially if you're late if you're
  • 00:07:47
turning something in like really late
  • 00:07:49
from like week two or week three um I'm
  • 00:07:52
not going to get to that until Monday
  • 00:07:55
Tuesday or Wednesday is usually the day
  • 00:07:56
is I set aside for grading so
  • 00:08:00
of course last night I don't know what
  • 00:08:03
you guys were doing but the election
  • 00:08:05
stuff was on TV last night and I just
  • 00:08:08
    wanted to get away from
  • 00:08:10
it and so I came into the office like
  • 00:08:13
family was watching it and that's fine I
  • 00:08:15
came into the office I was like I'm
  • 00:08:17
going to grade so I pretty much graded
  • 00:08:20
last night and I had everything caught
  • 00:08:22
up now I didn't look again today so if
  • 00:08:24
you turn something in today or maybe
  • 00:08:26
after I had gotten to your section last
  • 00:08:29
night there might still be something out
  • 00:08:30
there and guess what I'm probably not
  • 00:08:33
going to grade again until well that's G
  • 00:08:36
to be a tough one because next week I'm
  • 00:08:38
in I'm at that conference so I might get
  • 00:08:41
in and do some grading on Sunday I might
  • 00:08:43
do it on the airplane on Monday so it it
  • 00:08:46
might get a little sketchy next week my
  • 00:08:48
grading but I just want to let you
  • 00:08:51
know I I'm glad you're reaching out to
  • 00:08:53
me I'm glad you're asking these
  • 00:08:54
questions you should be asking these
  • 00:08:56
questions about the grades but um I just
  • 00:08:59
don't want you to think I've forgotten
  • 00:09:00
about you and that's just kind of my
  • 00:09:02
    schedule does that make sense
  • 00:09:05
hopefully I don't know how other
  • 00:09:07
    instructors grade maybe they grade
  • 00:09:09
differently but that's just like my
  • 00:09:10
    process
  • 00:09:14
    so all right
  • 00:09:16
    good
  • 00:09:18
um so one of the um other things that
  • 00:09:21
I'd like to tell you there's two things
  • 00:09:23
I like to do you know how I normally
  • 00:09:24
start out with the Icebreaker I don't do
  • 00:09:26
it this week um and I I don't tell you
  • 00:09:29
whole lot on the front half It's usually
  • 00:09:31
the back half that we talk I I like want
  • 00:09:33
to dive a little bit more
  • 00:09:35
into material first but before I do that
  • 00:09:39
have you guys heard of Warriors
  • 00:09:44
connect it's kind of like yes good I'm
  • 00:09:48
glad so Katherine Wayne do you guys are
  • 00:09:52
you are you out there are you signed up
  • 00:09:53
for it hopefully I'm signed up um but I
  • 00:09:57
haven't really like taken a good glance
  • 00:10:00
at it just yet um I know it's for the
  • 00:10:03
the community for Indiana Tech right
  • 00:10:05
    like all the
  • 00:10:06
students yeah it's like our social media
  • 00:10:09
kind of to me it looked a lot like
  • 00:10:11
Facebook you know that kind of thing
  • 00:10:13
like you could join groups and you have
  • 00:10:15
your feed and all that kind of stuff and
  • 00:10:17
notifications go out um so I closed off
  • 00:10:22
a lot of my notifications and you can
  • 00:10:24
connect with each other too if you
  • 00:10:25
wanted to but I've closed off a lot of
  • 00:10:27
my my um not notifications but big
  • 00:10:31
notifications might go out on Warriors
  • 00:10:34
connect um I don't know what I can give
  • 00:10:37
    you for a big notification
  • 00:10:40
maybe is that J May if um there
  • 00:10:44
was like weather alerts or something
  • 00:10:47
like that which really doesn't affect us
  • 00:10:49
with with being online like it did when
  • 00:10:52
we were on campus but I don't know it's
  • 00:10:55
it's just something to think about it's
  • 00:10:58
um if you go out to web page and just
  • 00:11:00
type in Warriors connect it'll come up
  • 00:11:03
you can get it on your like in the app
  • 00:11:06
store or you know Google play or
  • 00:11:08
whatever and and you could pull the app
  • 00:11:10
down it might just be good to have
  • 00:11:14
um wasn't this class I don't it must
  • 00:11:17
have been last session when I was
  • 00:11:19
teaching I don't think it happened since
  • 00:11:21
did you hear about there was a shooting
  • 00:11:23
    no not a
  • 00:11:24
shooting scratch that out I didn't say
  • 00:11:26
that word but although it's just as bad
  • 00:11:29
there was a stabbing on campus on the
  • 00:11:31
main campus was that during this was it
  • 00:11:34
like week one or it might have been last
  • 00:11:37
    session I don't know I I'm like you guys
  • 00:11:39
these courses just roll over and you're
  • 00:11:41
just like always in a class right um but
  • 00:11:44
that came out on the Warriors connect it
  • 00:11:47
was like um obviously for the people on
  • 00:11:51
campus it was like everyone shelter in
  • 00:11:54
place and you know do not leave where
  • 00:11:57
    you're at until further communication
  • 00:11:59
and I was like oh my gosh what's going
  • 00:12:00
on so um and then it came out that there
  • 00:12:04
was a student that had been stabbed not
  • 00:12:07
by another student but by like somebody
  • 00:12:09
who just came on campus some weirdo
  • 00:12:12
person but they had it all on camera and
  • 00:12:14
blah blah blah blah blah and that
  • 00:12:15
student was fine um just it just was a
  • 00:12:18
weird thing but like I said that's kind
  • 00:12:20
of how it's it's a communication tool to
  • 00:12:23
push messages out to students very
  • 00:12:26
important things out to students so
  • 00:12:29
um might might be good to have that's
  • 00:12:30
all I'm just saying that might might be
  • 00:12:32
good to sign up for that so that is
  • 00:12:35
something you want to do and if you want
  • 00:12:37
to connect with me yeah I'll connect
  • 00:12:39
with you that's fine it's like we need
  • 00:12:41
    another social media like there's
  • 00:12:43
    LinkedIn there's Facebook there's so
  • 00:12:45
many things right um okay so the ice
  • 00:12:49
    breaker for this week
  • 00:12:51
though it's kind of be it's going to be
  • 00:12:53
connected to the material I hope you
  • 00:12:55
don't mind um but I always like to talk
  • 00:12:58
about because a big part of what we talk
  • 00:13:00
about in these five chapters one of the
  • 00:13:03
    things is
  • 00:13:05
motivation right what gets you out of
  • 00:13:08
bed every day what what brings you to
  • 00:13:10
work how you know what does an awesome
  • 00:13:12
day at work look like for you so that's
  • 00:13:15
my question what does an awesome day at
  • 00:13:17
    work look like for
  • 00:13:27
    you like you come home
  • 00:13:37
he say I had a really good day you
  • 00:13:42
know for me it's being productive like
  • 00:13:46
wow I got so much done today and that's
  • 00:13:49
usually not the case it's usually like
  • 00:13:51
oh my God I have so much more to do
  • 00:13:53
tomorrow because I didn't get it all
  • 00:13:54
done today or couldn't get a thing done
  • 00:13:56
today um that's what I felt like today
  • 00:13:59
just felt like I was in meeting after
  • 00:14:00
meeting after meeting and I was like I I
  • 00:14:02
    got nothing
  • 00:14:04
    done oh Cynthia I'm so
  • 00:14:07
    jealous Cynthia's
  • 00:14:11
retired so relaxing is an awesome
  • 00:14:14
    day oh so
  • 00:14:16
jealous um an awesome day for me is
  • 00:14:19
being able to find all the parts I
  • 00:14:21
need oh there are no part shortages and
  • 00:14:24
everything is clean and everyone is
  • 00:14:27
    happy yeah
  • 00:14:31
yes it's like when things are going
  • 00:14:32
really well smoothly like it's a well
  • 00:14:34
well Machine I have no hiccups no
  • 00:14:36
problems like it's it's just a you know
  • 00:14:39
a nice a nice uneventful day
  • 00:14:47
    right what
  • 00:14:49
else what does an awesome day at work
  • 00:14:52
    look
  • 00:14:53
like all right let's see this one an
  • 00:14:56
awesome day for me is the house picked
  • 00:14:58
up M and just to relax on the couch with
  • 00:15:01
    no running around to
  • 00:15:03
do how often does that happen like do
  • 00:15:06
you have a lot of awesome days or does
  • 00:15:09
it seem like chaos Controlled Chaos
  • 00:15:12
    every day
  • 00:15:14
right um stay-at-home mom so kids not
  • 00:15:17
fighting animals happy yeah it doesn't
  • 00:15:19
    happen often
  • 00:15:24
right and for me too another part of
  • 00:15:27
    having an awesome day
  • 00:15:29
and this doesn't happen too often is not
  • 00:15:32
burning dinner I almost always burn
  • 00:15:34
something I have burned stuff so much in
  • 00:15:36
my life that I now love the taste of
  • 00:15:40
burnt food burnt bacon burnt popcorn
  • 00:15:43
burnt chocolate chip cookies I love the
  • 00:15:45
burnt flavor because I do it so often I
  • 00:15:48
think um every day I wake up is an
  • 00:15:51
awesome day that's a good outlook I love
  • 00:15:53
it um waves of awesome days and no
  • 00:15:56
    awesome days
  • 00:15:59
    yeah I like I and I talk to I have a
  • 00:16:02
cousin that I talk to almost every day
  • 00:16:04
she lives in New Jersey and like if I
  • 00:16:07
feel like every day she's got a story
  • 00:16:09
something to tell me and I'm like I must
  • 00:16:11
be boring because nothing goes on like I
  • 00:16:13
don't have any big drama big I'm not a
  • 00:16:16
soap opera over here you know it's
  • 00:16:18
    pretty
  • 00:16:19
    much same old same
  • 00:16:23
old um all right let's see what else
  • 00:16:26
great day for me is being able to come
  • 00:16:27
home not have the cook dinner kids
  • 00:16:30
homework's done I'm able to have some me
  • 00:16:33
time when people go into my spreadsheets
  • 00:16:35
    do not mess with my
  • 00:16:38
formulas I know and sadly it does not
  • 00:16:41
happen often also when I'm productive
  • 00:16:44
yeah I feel that same way like I feel
  • 00:16:46
really good when I get things
  • 00:16:49
    done relaxation reflection finding
  • 00:16:52
money emails at work are magically
  • 00:16:56
    answered I feel like
  • 00:17:00
this at least in Northern Indiana we
  • 00:17:03
have our Seasons changing right I feel
  • 00:17:05
like this is the time of year that I
  • 00:17:07
find money you know how you put on a
  • 00:17:09
coat from last year and you reach into
  • 00:17:11
the pockets you're like oh $10 this is
  • 00:17:13
awesome that's usually when I do it I
  • 00:17:16
    love
  • 00:17:17
it um payday is an awesome day right for
  • 00:17:22
sure for sure do you guys find yes or no
  • 00:17:25
do you find your current job motivating
  • 00:17:31
    no
  • 00:17:36
    no sometimes
  • 00:17:41
yes I'm also the only person in my
  • 00:17:44
department but other departments need my
  • 00:17:48
    spreadsheets not really no
  • 00:17:53
excitement and I'm not really all about
  • 00:17:55
like a lot of excitement I like
  • 00:17:59
I mean for me I I feel good about
  • 00:18:01
helping students when I when I've you
  • 00:18:04
know things have gone very smoothly I'm
  • 00:18:06
very productive and part of that
  • 00:18:07
productivity is I helped a student out
  • 00:18:10
today that I love that I absolutely
  • 00:18:18
love um good good so another I love my
  • 00:18:21
    job extremely fulfilling
  • 00:18:25
yeah Isis what do you do what do you do
  • 00:18:28
for a living if you don't mind me asking
  • 00:18:30
    it's obviously work with
  • 00:18:33
    spreadsheets so and it's something
  • 00:18:45
    fulfilling I was
  • 00:18:48
just oh I know how I came okay so do you
  • 00:18:51
remember I don't know if it was this
  • 00:18:53
class if it was this section one of my
  • 00:18:57
three sections last week had the code
  • 00:18:59
    word
  • 00:19:00
zubu and somebody in the class did their
  • 00:19:04
reflection and said code word is zubu I
  • 00:19:06
    don't even know what that
  • 00:19:08
is and my response was I'll be honest
  • 00:19:12
I'm not even sure I don't know either
  • 00:19:15
    but if I had to
  • 00:19:16
guess our local Zoo here had has
  • 00:19:20
    something around Halloween called zubu
  • 00:19:22
and like all the kids come in costumes
  • 00:19:24
it's just like an event at the zoo which
  • 00:19:27
made me go out since it it was around
  • 00:19:29
Halloween made me go out to the Zoo
  • 00:19:31
website and I was looking at some things
  • 00:19:34
because I had read like we had just
  • 00:19:35
gotten in two brothers that were bears
  • 00:19:38
like special endangered Bears there was
  • 00:19:40
a giraffe born there were painted um dog
  • 00:19:43
puppies born so I was looking through
  • 00:19:45
all that and it reminded me of a study
  • 00:19:47
so you guys know that my research
  • 00:19:48
interest is on meaningful work so I'm
  • 00:19:51
asking you these questions and it's it's
  • 00:19:53
very relevant to me and I remember
  • 00:19:56
reading a study some years ago about
  • 00:19:58
    about zookeepers and how vastly
  • 00:20:02
underpaid they are but how so fulfilled
  • 00:20:06
they were at their work like they did
  • 00:20:07
these jobs even though the pay was so
  • 00:20:10
low and Lov the work that they did and I
  • 00:20:12
was looking at all all of the animals
  • 00:20:14
and I'm thinking I could see that just
  • 00:20:16
because I'm an animal lover I could see
  • 00:20:18
that being a very fulfilling wonderful
  • 00:20:20
job and just the sad part about it is
  • 00:20:22
the tends to be a low paying
  • 00:20:24
    job
  • 00:20:27
um yeah yeah so some of you find it your
  • 00:20:31
    job motivating some
  • 00:20:33
don't um so what do you do with spread
  • 00:20:36
    sheets reimbursement director but the
  • 00:20:38
company I work for takes care of
  • 00:20:40
    individual oh individuals with
  • 00:20:42
    disabilities building those
  • 00:20:43
relationships with them helping them in
  • 00:20:45
    their independence it's
  • 00:20:48
amazing yeah that's that is I could see
  • 00:20:51
that yeah I agree with you yeah so some
  • 00:20:54
people do find their job motivating some
  • 00:20:56
people don't um what do you think
  • 00:20:58
motivates you so I know for me for Isis
  • 00:21:02
for others like us like there's that um
  • 00:21:06
meaningfulness of of the job it's a very
  • 00:21:09
meaningful job for us so that's kind of
  • 00:21:12
that's the motivation right that that
  • 00:21:14
typically is what it is what motivates
  • 00:21:17
you you go to work every day what
  • 00:21:20
    motivates you to do that
  • 00:21:30
and I love asking this question in my
  • 00:21:33
classes because you're going to see so
  • 00:21:35
    much
  • 00:21:36
    variety what typically motivates you
  • 00:21:39
what gets you going every day what makes
  • 00:21:41
    you continue to go to
  • 00:21:44
work taking care of my family making my
  • 00:21:46
    family happy my
  • 00:21:54
children money but I also love the
  • 00:21:57
    people I work with
  • 00:22:00
not being able to live a fun employment
  • 00:22:03
yeah uh family my goals believing in
  • 00:22:06
what I do in a mission of the company my
  • 00:22:09
kids I'm glad I that you said that
  • 00:22:12
because we're going to talk about
  • 00:22:13
mission in just a minute my kids and I
  • 00:22:14
    want to reach my
  • 00:22:17
dreams and I had a job my children
  • 00:22:19
    motivated
  • 00:22:20
    me
  • 00:22:23
    okay very good very
  • 00:22:27
good and what's also interesting is
  • 00:22:30
sometimes I do hear actually more than
  • 00:22:33
sometimes quite often I hear students
  • 00:22:35
say that money is a motivator and there
  • 00:22:39
have been studies conducted that say
  • 00:22:42
    money is not a
  • 00:22:44
motivator and one of them is an old
  • 00:22:46
study there have been other studies done
  • 00:22:49
you and you'll find too when you look at
  • 00:22:51
    published research when these
  • 00:22:53
researchers actually go out and conduct
  • 00:22:54
research and try to answer these
  • 00:22:57
questions um like would have a broader
  • 00:22:59
question what motivates people when it
  • 00:23:01
comes to work and you know they kind of
  • 00:23:04
collect their data and try to figure
  • 00:23:06
that out and answer that question and
  • 00:23:07
you'll find studies that contradict one
  • 00:23:10
another so that's why so much research
  • 00:23:13
gets conducted because if you can
  • 00:23:15
    replicate studies and
  • 00:23:17
revalidate um so many times then that
  • 00:23:20
that tends to be very significant study
  • 00:23:24
but one of them is this I'm going to
  • 00:23:26
type it in the chat herberg is the study
  • 00:23:30
and he was looking at accountants and
  • 00:23:33
    some other profession in
  • 00:23:36
Philadelphia and that's where his study
  • 00:23:38
kind of generated the notion that heay
  • 00:23:42
    really isn't a motivator
  • 00:23:44
because like you you get a raise at
  • 00:23:48
work you're happy about that but then
  • 00:23:51
you're looking for your next raise so
  • 00:23:54
you know he he didn't feel like from his
  • 00:23:57
research that money was a motivator but
  • 00:23:59
    I can tell
  • 00:24:00
you thousands of students have asked
  • 00:24:03
this question do have said money
  • 00:24:06
motivates me and if you structure a pay
  • 00:24:11
um compensation structure just right you
  • 00:24:15
can motivate people with that so I don't
  • 00:24:18
    know that
  • 00:24:19
I'm fully fully into that coffee
  • 00:24:22
    motivates
  • 00:24:24
    me
  • 00:24:25
um oh photo edit it's a Big Mo ation for
  • 00:24:28
doing that is creating and fixing
  • 00:24:30
memories for people seeing how much more
  • 00:24:32
I grow with each other oh that's that's
  • 00:24:34
wonderful I love it um What attracted
  • 00:24:38
    you to your current
  • 00:24:41
job What attracted you so why did you
  • 00:24:44
take it why' you take the
  • 00:24:47
job and this might be the same reason
  • 00:24:50
connected to the motivation Factor but
  • 00:24:53
what attracted you maybe you had your
  • 00:24:55
choice of you had multiple offers
  • 00:24:59
why why do you pick this
  • 00:25:08
    one convenience okay close to
  • 00:25:14
home that's what's so wonderful about
  • 00:25:17
working remote the commute is wonderful
  • 00:25:19
you know I just walk down my stairs I my
  • 00:25:22
    work I love
  • 00:25:26
it on the other hand my card doesn't
  • 00:25:28
leave the garage very often I think I
  • 00:25:30
got in it the other day it was last
  • 00:25:32
Friday I don't can't tell you the last
  • 00:25:34
time I drove and last Friday I went to
  • 00:25:37
the movies with my mom and I couldn't
  • 00:25:39
figure out how to turn the light on in
  • 00:25:40
my car I'm like I haven't been in this
  • 00:25:41
car in so long I don't know how to turn
  • 00:25:43
the light on so yeah does I I think I
  • 00:25:47
have a very good carbon footprint
  • 00:25:51
now okay so what attracted you to your
  • 00:25:54
to your job Kimberly says something I
  • 00:25:57
    enjoy so it's the work
  • 00:26:04
itself else What attracted you to your
  • 00:26:12
job oh switch careers from law
  • 00:26:15
enforcement to Health Care able to help
  • 00:26:17
people but not have to interact with
  • 00:26:19
them directly all right Dominique so
  • 00:26:22
remember last week I talked about other
  • 00:26:24
ways that you can earn credit and that
  • 00:26:26
Indiana Tech is very liberal about
  • 00:26:28
    taking transfer Credit Law Enforcement
  • 00:26:30
Training will transfer in for you so if
  • 00:26:34
you haven't done that reach out to the
  • 00:26:36
    register's office and get
  • 00:26:39
that um credit evaluated for transfer
  • 00:26:43
    credit
  • 00:26:45
okay uh my company's mission to improve
  • 00:26:48
health care and help people live better
  • 00:26:52
    lives
  • 00:26:54
nice I started off as DSP then I move to
  • 00:26:57
    PA
  • 00:26:58
after two years just want to move back
  • 00:27:01
to my hometown they offered me to move
  • 00:27:04
back and I took it I had no experience
  • 00:27:06
never saw myself in healthc care but I
  • 00:27:08
    love it
  • 00:27:10
awesome and you know what that was one
  • 00:27:12
of the reasons why I chose to move into
  • 00:27:16
    this remote
  • 00:27:18
position you know it's it was I was
  • 00:27:21
living two hours away from my husband
  • 00:27:23
and my son and yeah I wanted to get back
  • 00:27:25
home I like the idea of work
  • 00:27:28
remote so I can work from anywhere
  • 00:27:33
right switch careers bus driver now I
  • 00:27:37
    used to be an independent
  • 00:27:39
contractor enjoy helping others yeah um
  • 00:27:43
so sometimes when you hear like what's
  • 00:27:45
important to somebody that can connect
  • 00:27:47
over to the motivation right what
  • 00:27:50
    motivates you it's it's usually what's
  • 00:27:52
important to you does connect with the
  • 00:27:55
    motivation
  • 00:27:58
yeah so just seeing all of this will
  • 00:28:02
    help you to understand
  • 00:28:05
that and and this will all connect
  • 00:28:07
together as these weeks go along but
  • 00:28:09
seeing seeing how differently people are
  • 00:28:13
motivated as a manager you have to know
  • 00:28:16
that right let's say you have 10 people
  • 00:28:19
working for you you're the manager of of
  • 00:28:21
    a department of
  • 00:28:22
10 how do you know what motivates each
  • 00:28:26
of these 10 people how do you figure
  • 00:28:28
    figure that
  • 00:28:33
out talking to them yeah get to know
  • 00:28:36
    them right
  • 00:28:40
    communicate have that
  • 00:28:46
    conversation excellent yeah then another
  • 00:28:50
    thing that
  • 00:28:53
um ah Cynthia says daughter motivated
  • 00:28:57
her because she's in school yeah um
  • 00:29:01
    another so Savannah has another
  • 00:29:04
    suggestion for knowing
  • 00:29:07
    what's important to people what
  • 00:29:09
motivates them observe their work and
  • 00:29:11
what they take the most pride in yeah
  • 00:29:14
just having that connection with people
  • 00:29:17
    and you
  • 00:29:19
    know communicating well with them
  • 00:29:21
working side by side with them being
  • 00:29:23
involved with the people that work for
  • 00:29:25
you you learn about them you do when
  • 00:29:28
back when I worked for prescy and we did
  • 00:29:31
    a lot with employee satisfaction
  • 00:29:33
Employee Engagement and just trying to
  • 00:29:36
figure out like how to improve the
  • 00:29:38
morale for employees and it's Health
  • 00:29:41
Care Facilities is is was our client
  • 00:29:44
    right
  • 00:29:45
so um a lot of times you would hear from
  • 00:29:49
people that they wanted to that senior
  • 00:29:52
leadership wasn't very visible and they
  • 00:29:54
wanted senior leadership to be more
  • 00:29:56
involved and in sometimes in your job it
  • 00:29:59
can pull you away from having that those
  • 00:30:02
human relations that we talked about in
  • 00:30:04
week one right it can pull you away from
  • 00:30:07
having that connection with people so
  • 00:30:09
you have to be very cognizant of that
  • 00:30:11
and um make sure you're doing it work
  • 00:30:14
    hard to do
  • 00:30:16
    that good
  • 00:30:18
job the other thing that we talk about
  • 00:30:21
in these five chapters is mission and
  • 00:30:25
vision can you tell me what is the
  • 00:30:27
    difference
  • 00:30:28
so your companies will usually have
  • 00:30:30
Mission a mission statement and a vision
  • 00:30:33
statement what is the difference between
  • 00:30:35
    the
  • 00:30:37
to like I always say if you're not sure
  • 00:30:40
look it up it's in our text you could
  • 00:30:43
Google it mission is what you stand for
  • 00:30:46
while the vision is where you trying to
  • 00:30:49
go I like that mission is what you stand
  • 00:30:53
for vision is where you're going to go
  • 00:30:58
tell me if you you get another
  • 00:31:10
definition any other definitions I see
  • 00:31:13
some people typing so just give it a
  • 00:31:17
    second mission defines
  • 00:31:26
purpose V vision is for future goals
  • 00:31:30
right mission is also how you plan to
  • 00:31:33
achieve its goal not quite but you're
  • 00:31:36
close you're you're on to it we're going
  • 00:31:39
to talk about that in just a
  • 00:31:44
second explains this roles goals and
  • 00:31:46
core values of a company kind
  • 00:31:49
of sometimes you'll see Mission Vision
  • 00:31:52
Values right you can see values separate
  • 00:31:58
Mission what we do now and why Vision
  • 00:32:01
where we're going to go in the
  • 00:32:05
future really I like that I like that a
  • 00:32:09
lot like vision is more like your
  • 00:32:12
    culture of than
  • 00:32:15
company I like how you had it the first
  • 00:32:18
time like think about Vision looking
  • 00:32:21
ahead right that I like that you said
  • 00:32:23
that it's it's where we want to to go
  • 00:32:28
and then IIs kind of brought us to a
  • 00:32:31
down a different path because so your
  • 00:32:34
mission is you're here and you're now
  • 00:32:36
vision is where you want to be and how
  • 00:32:38
you get there how you achieve that goal
  • 00:32:40
    that's
  • 00:32:43
strategy vision is the company's goal
  • 00:32:46
and what the company wants to achieve
  • 00:32:48
Mission focuses on the purpose of the
  • 00:32:50
    company that's another good one
  • 00:32:53
yeah and we talk about this you know
  • 00:32:56
    because
  • 00:32:58
I think it's next week we talk about
  • 00:33:00
    leadership
  • 00:33:02
and a characteristic or quality of a
  • 00:33:05
good leader is having a vision like we
  • 00:33:08
talk about the different we're GNA talk
  • 00:33:09
    about the difference between management
  • 00:33:11
and Leadership so leadership leader is
  • 00:33:13
somebody who has a vision like where are
  • 00:33:15
we going to be where are we going to go
  • 00:33:17
where what should we do next
  • 00:33:20
and looking at that and this is another
  • 00:33:24
part of these five chapters that we have
  • 00:33:26
this week is some something called a
  • 00:33:29
SWAT analysis right so sometimes you are
  • 00:33:33
    going to change your
  • 00:33:35
    strategy
  • 00:33:37
and that can be achieved through SWAT so
  • 00:33:41
what is SWAT do you get have you guys
  • 00:33:43
heard of that do you know what that
  • 00:33:47
is I'll type in the chat weaknesses
  • 00:33:51
opportunities and threats and that was
  • 00:33:53
actually my first time hearing it from
  • 00:33:54
this class uh reading the text it was
  • 00:33:56
    actually pretty interesting
  • 00:33:58
    yeah yeah is very
  • 00:34:00
interesting yeah yep a SWAT analysis
  • 00:34:04
    stands for strength weaknesses
  • 00:34:06
    opportunities and threats has anybody
  • 00:34:09
been involved with a SWAT analysis at
  • 00:34:11
    your
  • 00:34:20
companies oh once a month that's often
  • 00:34:24
    yeah that's
  • 00:34:26
often but it could depend it could it
  • 00:34:29
could depend on what you're using it
  • 00:34:37
for all right so not really anybody in
  • 00:34:41
here um so I'm gonna have you look it up
  • 00:34:43
if you don't remember from the reading
  • 00:34:45
but and I kind of give you a little
  • 00:34:48
hint what do we do with like why do we
  • 00:34:51
have a SWAT analysis why are company why
  • 00:34:53
    do companies use
  • 00:34:55
    this it's a tool it's a framework but
  • 00:34:59
    what are they doing with
  • 00:35:06
    it they're using it
  • 00:35:09
to understand where they are as a
  • 00:35:17
    company yeah it's it's so it's twofold
  • 00:35:21
right it is where we are now what is our
  • 00:35:25
    competitive position
  • 00:35:28
and then where do we want to
  • 00:35:31
go right helps us to develop that path
  • 00:35:34
    that
  • 00:35:37
plan and I like how Hannah said to start
  • 00:35:39
a new business that could be one of the
  • 00:35:41
reasons why maybe you want a new product
  • 00:35:43
you want a new segment or where do we
  • 00:35:46
need to be five years from now 10 years
  • 00:35:48
    ago 25 years from
  • 00:35:50
now um and that's what we do here at
  • 00:35:53
Indiana Tech we've only done we've only
  • 00:35:55
    conducted two SWAT analyses
  • 00:35:58
in my whole time here and that's been
  • 00:36:01
with our new I say new president but
  • 00:36:03
he's been here for like I feel like
  • 00:36:05
    eight
  • 00:36:06
years maybe not quite eight but when he
  • 00:36:09
first came in that was one of the things
  • 00:36:12
he wanted to do he said let's take a
  • 00:36:13
look at the mission statement is it
  • 00:36:15
relevant does it need to be changed what
  • 00:36:16
about the vision statement and then
  • 00:36:20
where are where are we going to be by
  • 00:36:22
the year 2025 what do we want to be
  • 00:36:24
where do we want to be so we conducted a
  • 00:36:27
    spot
  • 00:36:28
analysis and then we developed our
  • 00:36:31
strategy around that fast forward five
  • 00:36:35
    years we did it again
  • 00:36:37
    because strategy isn't something that
  • 00:36:40
you just kind of set it and forget it
  • 00:36:42
you have to make adjustments because
  • 00:36:47
    things change right nothing nothing
  • 00:36:49
    really stays the
  • 00:36:52
same so that is part of what we talk
  • 00:36:55
about in this class is this this SWAT
  • 00:36:57
analysis so you have the strengths
  • 00:37:00
    weaknesses opportunities and threats
  • 00:37:01
that you're going to evaluate two of
  • 00:37:03
them are internal to the company two are
  • 00:37:05
external so which two would you say are
  • 00:37:10
    internal strength and
  • 00:37:12
    weaknesses yep so naturally the
  • 00:37:15
opportunities and threats are kind of
  • 00:37:17
going on externally like I said things
  • 00:37:20
    change things in the external
  • 00:37:21
environment change all the time so you
  • 00:37:23
need to re-evaluate doeses anything you
  • 00:37:26
know need to be adjusted because of
  • 00:37:29
    these these
  • 00:37:30
    factors um
  • 00:37:34
so how do you think you go about I'll
  • 00:37:38
just tell you that the strengths
  • 00:37:40
    weaknesses opportunities and threats are
  • 00:37:41
    usually four lists that get
  • 00:37:45
developed how do you think you go about
  • 00:37:48
developing these lists what where do you
  • 00:37:49
    get this information
  • 00:37:55
    from you work
  • 00:37:58
    surveys
  • 00:37:59
    [Music]
  • 00:38:00
and and however you you know analyze how
  • 00:38:05
    the people are doing their
  • 00:38:07
    job yeah definitely
  • 00:38:10
    employees right some the
  • 00:38:13
workers um surveys I like that um
  • 00:38:16
    Kimberly says
  • 00:38:20
reviews um exploring everything as far
  • 00:38:25
    as relations and work
  • 00:38:31
yeah and I'll I'll tell you when we did
  • 00:38:33
    this in Indiana Tech we
  • 00:38:36
    definitely involveed the
  • 00:38:41
    employees
  • 00:38:43
students you know students are going to
  • 00:38:45
    help us
  • 00:38:47
to develop some of these things vendors
  • 00:38:54
    suppliers right
  • 00:38:58
so yeah anywhere you can get this
  • 00:39:00
    information
  • 00:39:04
from anywhere you get this information
  • 00:39:06
from so let's take a look at each of the
  • 00:39:09
categories so you said strengths is one
  • 00:39:11
of them you said strengths isn't
  • 00:39:13
    internal to the
  • 00:39:16
organization what do we mean when we say
  • 00:39:19
strength what are we looking for here
  • 00:39:29
depending on what area the company is in
  • 00:39:31
    business in
  • 00:39:33
    it's you
  • 00:39:36
know what makes it you know
  • 00:39:42
    work or profitable or you
  • 00:39:45
know yeah I would agree with that I
  • 00:39:47
would agree with that um Hannah says
  • 00:39:51
    what the company thrives
  • 00:39:53
on strong points what they're doing best
  • 00:39:59
yeah all of that it's it's what the
  • 00:40:02
organization excels at what separates it
  • 00:40:05
from the competition what is it doing
  • 00:40:08
well give me some examples what could be
  • 00:40:11
    a
  • 00:40:16
    strength high
  • 00:40:19
production all right yeah you're able to
  • 00:40:23
produce at a very high rate
  • 00:40:31
    um
  • 00:40:32
so best seller will be like maybe a
  • 00:40:35
    strong strong
  • 00:40:36
    product um yeah loyal customer
  • 00:40:43
    base definitely a strong
  • 00:40:51
brand maybe you have unique technology
  • 00:40:54
some could be some kind of asset that
  • 00:40:56
    you have right
  • 00:40:58
um it could be a strong balance
  • 00:41:02
    sheet a great
  • 00:41:05
    culture yeah absolutely a great
  • 00:41:09
culture yeah so you want to think about
  • 00:41:11
all those things that that you're doing
  • 00:41:14
well and I love when you talk to
  • 00:41:17
customers right for us when we talk to
  • 00:41:19
students it's like what do you think
  • 00:41:20
we're doing well what do you think sets
  • 00:41:23
us apart what do you think we excel at
  • 00:41:25
    so getting all these different
  • 00:41:26
    perspectiv Ives very very
  • 00:41:30
helpful what about weaknesses what what
  • 00:41:32
do we mean when we say
  • 00:41:41
weaknesses or and Manufacturing we would
  • 00:41:44
call those things part of the man the
  • 00:41:47
lean manufacturing of or getting rid of
  • 00:41:50
    wasteful
  • 00:41:50
    [Music]
  • 00:41:52
things so a weakness would be when you
  • 00:41:55
    have waste
  • 00:42:07
yeah could could be as far as product
  • 00:42:10
    right maybe it's an
  • 00:42:12
    underperforming product but it's it's
  • 00:42:15
    [Music]
  • 00:42:17
    where the business needs to
  • 00:42:21
improve what do we need to be better
  • 00:42:26
at so we said a strength could be a
  • 00:42:29
strong brand having a strong brand but a
  • 00:42:32
    weakness could be a weak
  • 00:42:35
brand something that deters customers or
  • 00:42:38
has a negative impact on the company
  • 00:42:40
    yeah I'd agree with
  • 00:42:42
    that um maybe you
  • 00:42:46
have really high turnover people people
  • 00:42:49
don't stay employees don't stay that
  • 00:42:51
    could be a
  • 00:42:53
weakness maybe you have an awful lot of
  • 00:42:58
debt maybe we mentioned this earlier in
  • 00:43:01
the chat maybe there's in inadequate
  • 00:43:05
    supply
  • 00:43:07
chain maybe you don't have a lot of
  • 00:43:10
capital right all these could be areas
  • 00:43:14
    that you need to improve
  • 00:43:17
    upon maybe you're not
  • 00:43:20
performing at your best right um what
  • 00:43:23
    about opportunities so opportunities and
  • 00:43:26
threats are part of the external
  • 00:43:27
    environment so think outside right
  • 00:43:29
outside of us um what do we mean when we
  • 00:43:32
say opportunities so how do we Define
  • 00:43:34
    that what's what's an
  • 00:43:39
opportunity things that a company can do
  • 00:43:42
    or take advantage
  • 00:43:45
    of like stock options
  • 00:43:48
    or
  • 00:43:50
    um company
  • 00:43:55
    picnics or even
  • 00:43:59
    events for the
  • 00:44:01
community yeah think external I like
  • 00:44:04
    that think
  • 00:44:05
    external um it's something
  • 00:44:09
that I like what Hannah said new ideas
  • 00:44:12
    opportunities are something that they're
  • 00:44:14
external factors right external to the
  • 00:44:16
    organization something that will give
  • 00:44:18
    the company a competitive
  • 00:44:24
Advantage something that would help the
  • 00:44:26
    company grow I like
  • 00:44:31
that maybe it's an opportunity could be
  • 00:44:36
    a new market for
  • 00:44:38
us maybe we are a car manufacturer and
  • 00:44:43
    hey we can sell these
  • 00:44:45
cars name a country in Africa right uh
  • 00:44:49
so you have a new a new
  • 00:44:52
market maybe it's a new product idea
  • 00:44:56
    that
  • 00:44:58
that you have so it's it's that I like
  • 00:45:00
    that opportunity for growth Partnerships
  • 00:45:03
that's another good good example and
  • 00:45:05
    then threats also
  • 00:45:06
external what do we mean when we say
  • 00:45:13
    threats things like natural disasters
  • 00:45:17
or something that can happen to the
  • 00:45:20
company that's not controlled by the
  • 00:45:23
    company yeah yeah it's it's a factor
  • 00:45:27
external again external factor that can
  • 00:45:29
potentially harm us and you can even
  • 00:45:33
classify some of these as like the
  • 00:45:35
    ultimate threat like what would
  • 00:45:37
completely shut us down like these are
  • 00:45:39
the things that we have to think about
  • 00:45:41
for us here in education I think I
  • 00:45:43
mentioned this last couple weeks um one
  • 00:45:45
of the big factors for us is federal
  • 00:45:49
financial aid if we ever got cut off
  • 00:45:53
from being able to offer federal
  • 00:45:54
financial aid may as well close the
  • 00:45:56
doors I mean that that is how most
  • 00:45:58
    students fund their
  • 00:46:00
education um so that that would that
  • 00:46:02
would shut us down if you were a farmer
  • 00:46:05
maybe um there was a drought right that
  • 00:46:08
would that would threaten your your
  • 00:46:11
    crops
  • 00:46:14
right um another threat could be and my
  • 00:46:17
gosh we're experiencing this now with
  • 00:46:19
    the economy rising cost of
  • 00:46:24
materials maybe a new competitor entered
  • 00:46:27
    the
  • 00:46:29
market um how about this one tight labor
  • 00:46:32
Supply hard to find people hard to find
  • 00:46:36
employees right so these these are all
  • 00:46:40
threats so Dominque says the threat
  • 00:46:43
would be customers going to other
  • 00:46:44
    pharmacies due to quicker
  • 00:46:46
    shipment yeah and it's interesting
  • 00:46:49
because sometimes you can say it's a
  • 00:46:52
threat or could be a weakness so you
  • 00:46:53
really have to think is it internal or
  • 00:46:55
external um it could land in either one
  • 00:46:58
    of those
  • 00:47:00
categories um so yeah so you collect all
  • 00:47:03
    this information you're developing these
  • 00:47:05
four lists um you're probably going to
  • 00:47:08
validate these four lists like what are
  • 00:47:10
we seeing what are commonalities what
  • 00:47:12
are common themes that we're we're
  • 00:47:14
seeing here uh right so and then you you
  • 00:47:19
want to build your strategy based on
  • 00:47:22
that you know what what can we do better
  • 00:47:25
what um assets what strengths should we
  • 00:47:29
hold on to what do we need to continue
  • 00:47:31
doing what do we need to change what
  • 00:47:33
opportunities do we need to take
  • 00:47:35
advantage of and how do we try to
  • 00:47:38
eliminate these threats as much as we
  • 00:47:40
can and you build your strategy off of
  • 00:47:41
that and part of building that strategy
  • 00:47:44
is metrics what do we measure how do we
  • 00:47:47
know we're we're getting where we need
  • 00:47:49
to be how do we know we're accomplishing
  • 00:47:51
our goal you measure you measure and you
  • 00:47:54
measure I mean you're doing that you
  • 00:47:55
know that's the cycle that you're
  • 00:47:57
they're constantly doing do you have the
  • 00:47:58
    right measurements that's another thing
  • 00:48:00
like do we have the right metrics are we
  • 00:48:02
measuring the right thing um and that's
  • 00:48:05
why we we do this often like you know
  • 00:48:09
IIs said they do it monthly like for us
  • 00:48:11
it's every five years a fiveyear cycle
  • 00:48:13
and what do we need to readjust what's
  • 00:48:16
happening that we need to readjust but
  • 00:48:19
sometimes you get called like we have to
  • 00:48:20
have an emergency meeting right now
  • 00:48:22
something is terribly wrong you know
  • 00:48:25
whatever so um it's a really really good
  • 00:48:28
tool to use it is a framework that was
  • 00:48:32
developed some years ago we still use it
  • 00:48:36
there's another one that's kind of
  • 00:48:37
similar to this like you know pestel is
  • 00:48:42
another one you you'll learn about that
  • 00:48:43
in the next couple weeks um but yeah
  • 00:48:46
this is this is a great tool and with
  • 00:48:49
that I know we have 10 minutes left so I
  • 00:48:51
want to try to be quick about this um
  • 00:48:55
let me see if I could pull up a set of
  • 00:48:57
    slides that I should have
  • 00:48:59
    handy yeah I
  • 00:49:02
do um so now I'm gonna see can I do a
  • 00:49:07
    poll in this
  • 00:49:09
class oh I don't know if I can or I
  • 00:49:12
    can't
  • 00:49:14
polling um can I do that no I'm not very
  • 00:49:19
good at canvas this is just such a new
  • 00:49:21
tool I was way better on blackboard but
  • 00:49:24
um just by typing in the chat yes or no
  • 00:49:28
how many of you have used artificial
  • 00:49:31
intelligence AI such as chat PT or
  • 00:49:36
    Claude or co-pilot or
  • 00:49:41
Firefly okay I'm so glad to see yeses
  • 00:49:44
because for a long time students were
  • 00:49:46
    like
  • 00:49:47
no no no no don't even know what it is
  • 00:49:50
so good you guys have have exper
  • 00:49:53
experienced it and experimented with it
  • 00:49:55
    I love that
  • 00:49:57
um so for those of you that
  • 00:50:00
haven't I just put together some slides
  • 00:50:03
    really really
  • 00:50:06
quickly oh let's see if I can find them
  • 00:50:09
    this should do
  • 00:50:11
it let's see make them a little bit
  • 00:50:15
bigger um so yeah there are a ton of
  • 00:50:18
    different tools out there
  • 00:50:20
now and they could be awfully helpful
  • 00:50:23
I'm just going to say they can be
  • 00:50:24
awfully helpful for you so the
  • 00:50:26
    capabilities are always changing what
  • 00:50:29
you can and can't do so I was just
  • 00:50:31
trying to think through like what what
  • 00:50:32
can we do now like now with this stuff
  • 00:50:36
um we can upload documents so you can
  • 00:50:40
have have a file I've done this before
  • 00:50:42
    like here's a spreadsheet and here's
  • 00:50:44
what I want to know from the spreadsheet
  • 00:50:46
so for me it's probably going to be
  • 00:50:49
student courses and grades and you know
  • 00:50:52
I might ask it a question like analyze
  • 00:50:54
this spreadsheet and tell me if students
  • 00:50:57
    that have the prerequisite outperform
  • 00:51:00
students that don't boom it does it it's
  • 00:51:04
it makes my day way more efficient um so
  • 00:51:07
you can you can upload anything and just
  • 00:51:11
have it have it analyzed so there's
  • 00:51:13
document upload it can create images so
  • 00:51:17
you can have it say show me an image of
  • 00:51:21
    a professor in their
  • 00:51:23
office um grading papers and it will
  • 00:51:26
generate that image for you it would can
  • 00:51:30
analyze an image and and our cell phones
  • 00:51:31
can do this now too right so we can
  • 00:51:34
click on the eye when we see an image
  • 00:51:36
but you could do that too in in any one
  • 00:51:38
of these AI upload and say um what is
  • 00:51:41
this meal this a picture of a meal what
  • 00:51:43
is this meal I'm about to eat and and it
  • 00:51:45
    will tell
  • 00:51:46
you um you can ask it questions it'll
  • 00:51:50
give you some kind of like what you do
  • 00:51:52
when you go out to a web browser right
  • 00:51:55
and you you Google something you're
  • 00:51:57
basically asking it a question like that
  • 00:52:00
you can have it help you generate some
  • 00:52:03
ideas like I've done this too like hey
  • 00:52:06
I'd like to go on a trip to uh New
  • 00:52:09
Zealand can you tell me the top 10
  • 00:52:11
things I need to see while I'm there can
  • 00:52:13
you map out a route for me um and I want
  • 00:52:16
to only go for seven days so what things
  • 00:52:19
do I need to see in those seven days and
  • 00:52:21
I by the way I only want to stay at four
  • 00:52:23
star hotels list those out for me give
  • 00:52:25
me suggest suggestions put an itinerary
  • 00:52:28
together for me um so it it can do all
  • 00:52:32
of those things as well um and then
  • 00:52:36
again I I told you you can upload
  • 00:52:37
information you can also do data
  • 00:52:39
analysis with it um so it's very very
  • 00:52:42
powerful tool it's really good for
  • 00:52:44
repetitive tasks like yeah I can do a
  • 00:52:47
    statistical analysis with a spreadsheet
  • 00:52:50
and I can do it through Excel but this
  • 00:52:52
is so much faster so um it's really good
  • 00:52:56
to do repetitive test but if it's
  • 00:52:58
something that's going to require brain
  • 00:53:00
power that you really have to think
  • 00:53:02
through um then you might not want to
  • 00:53:05
use it or use it as like this is my
  • 00:53:07
first attempt now I need to really look
  • 00:53:10
through this I might ask it to do an
  • 00:53:12
analysis but I'm going to get my eyes on
  • 00:53:14
it too um for example like I've had it
  • 00:53:17
you know you guys are going to come into
  • 00:53:18
doing this you're gonna we're going to
  • 00:53:20
ask you to complete an evaluation at the
  • 00:53:22
end of the course so you give us your
  • 00:53:23
feedback I have pulled evaluations out
  • 00:53:26
of our out of our software and it said
  • 00:53:30
tell me what students are saying about
  • 00:53:32
this this course what are some of the
  • 00:53:35
detractors that I need to know about how
  • 00:53:37
can we make improvements to this course
  • 00:53:40
and it will quickly like give you these
  • 00:53:42
categories and such and then I'm like
  • 00:53:44
well how prevalent is this like is this
  • 00:53:46
really because I looked at these and I
  • 00:53:48
didn't hardly see this and it's like oh
  • 00:53:52
one in 500 students said that I'm like
  • 00:53:54
okay that's really not worth my time
  • 00:53:56
looking at so asking the right questions
  • 00:53:58
is very very important too and then you
  • 00:54:01
    have to remember that this
  • 00:54:04
technology it's getting smarter right it
  • 00:54:08
    is getting smarter but it's
  • 00:54:10
still has some errors it's prone to
  • 00:54:12
errors so you need to spot check this
  • 00:54:15
information I would never ever ever have
  • 00:54:17
it do something and then present it
  • 00:54:20
without making sure this is right um so
  • 00:54:24
it like again it's a good first draft
  • 00:54:26
but you really need to look it over um
  • 00:54:31
so you want to get really really
  • 00:54:32
specific with it and and you have this
  • 00:54:34
thing called prompting so you put in
  • 00:54:36
this this question it's like what I what
  • 00:54:39
I want to ask it I'm not going to go
  • 00:54:40
through these because we we're running
  • 00:54:41
out of time but these are like the
  • 00:54:43
building blocks for for developing a
  • 00:54:46
really good strong prompt um you want to
  • 00:54:49
give it a lot of as much background as
  • 00:54:51
you possibly can um you know like I
  • 00:54:54
    would
  • 00:54:55
say um um I'm an assistant Dean for the
  • 00:54:59
College of Business at a private
  • 00:55:02
university um these are evaluations from
  • 00:55:04
an online course um so you tell it like
  • 00:55:08
what your role is what what's going on
  • 00:55:10
give it some context um tell what you
  • 00:55:13
want to do like I want you to give me
  • 00:55:15
some feedback on and analyze this course
  • 00:55:18
and give me some feedback what
  • 00:55:19
improvements can we make and I want this
  • 00:55:22
    in the form of a
  • 00:55:23
list um tell me why you selected these
  • 00:55:27
so there's a lot of different questions
  • 00:55:29
you can ask and the better you prompt it
  • 00:55:32
the better results you're going to get
  • 00:55:34
from it okay so I think basically that's
  • 00:55:37
like a lot of the rest of these slides
  • 00:55:39
yeah it is so I will post these slides
  • 00:55:41
so you have them I definitely wanted you

to know that this technology is out
  • 00:55:47
there and I'm also I think I have chat
  • 00:55:51
    pulled
  • 00:55:53
up so if you haven't done this and you
  • 00:55:57
haven't seen it I want you to just see
  • 00:55:59
like the for me what I think the number
  • 00:56:02
one power that this thing has is it
  • 00:56:06
generates it generates content and I
  • 00:56:08
think I told you this at the beginning
  • 00:56:10
of the class absolutely use this in my
  • 00:56:13
class um have it to refine your
  • 00:56:18
papers and um I do this with emails I
  • 00:56:22
think I told you that I I will type up
  • 00:56:24
an email I just did it yesterday trying
  • 00:56:25
to find some new faculty I type up the
  • 00:56:28
email like before I send this let me
  • 00:56:30
just put it in the chat and I'll say
  • 00:56:32
help me help me um revise this I put the
  • 00:56:35
email in and it'll spit back you know
  • 00:56:38
this is this is what I change um so many
  • 00:56:41
times I see student papers where there's
  • 00:56:43
    grammatical errors and spelling errors
  • 00:56:45
yeah you can fix this in word but you
  • 00:56:47
can also fix it here too so we can very
  • 00:56:50
easily say conduct a SWAT analysis for
  • 00:56:55
    indie and
  • 00:56:57
uh in okay that wasn't tight um
  • 00:57:00
    capitalize
  • 00:57:02
    Institute of
  • 00:57:05
Technology and I mean within a matter of
  • 00:57:08
seconds it just puts this information
  • 00:57:10
out there and it's fairly reliable so
  • 00:57:13
it's a good starting point like if I
  • 00:57:15
wanted to do a SWAT analysis I could
  • 00:57:17
    start here
  • 00:57:19
and you know just work from there and
  • 00:57:22
see what other people have said when I
  • 00:57:24
collect my information um I can
  • 00:57:27
    say um
  • 00:57:29
    Now give me the
  • 00:57:33
    top
  • 00:57:35
um a top element from each
  • 00:57:40
list and then just see what it gives you
  • 00:57:42
I mean you just can keep asking more and
  • 00:57:44
more questions and you know just
  • 00:57:47
refining it you can tell it's give me 20
  • 00:57:50
responses for each category I mean you
  • 00:57:53
could just do so much with this stuff
  • 00:57:55
but wanted you to know it's out there
  • 00:57:57
it's available for you um and it's
  • 00:58:00
something I encourage you to use because
  • 00:58:03
like even in my profession in HR we're
  • 00:58:05
using this all the time we're H having
  • 00:58:08
it to generate job descriptions it can
  • 00:58:12
um take a an applicant's resume and
  • 00:58:16
compare it against the job description
  • 00:58:18
    it could take multiple applications
  • 00:58:20
compare it and then give me
  • 00:58:22
recommendations it can rank them like
  • 00:58:24
which is my strongest cand it and why um
  • 00:58:28
so yeah another thing you want to be
  • 00:58:30
careful of is bias there's a lot of bias
  • 00:58:32
built into this because it learned from
  • 00:58:36
the internet and we all know how he
  • 00:58:39
can't trust the internet right um all
  • 00:58:42
right so we're straight up at seven
  • 00:58:43
o'clock I don't want to hold you up too
  • 00:58:44
much longer do we have a code
  • 00:58:47
word what do you have as an idea for a
  • 00:58:49
    code
  • 00:58:53
word why yeah I love it okay we're gonna
  • 00:58:58
go with SWAT SWAT is the code word um
  • 00:59:03
remember look from um look out onto the
  • 00:59:07
announcements or an email from me about
  • 00:59:09
next week and what I'm going to do okay
  • 00:59:11
so I'll put that out there for you if
  • 00:59:12
you have any questions though get me
  • 00:59:14
offline because I'm going to jump into
  • 00:59:16
    my next
  • 00:59:17
session have a good night you guys see
  • 00:59:19
    you next week
