00:00:00
this is crammy glacio from aec surface
00:00:02
tech and today what we're going over are
00:00:03
three methods in order to connect and
00:00:05
hang rectangular duct in a ceiling an
00:00:08
attic or in a crawl space
00:00:13
[Music]
00:00:17
so here we have 14 by eight rectangular
00:00:20
duct and you can see it actually
00:00:21
measures fourteen and a quarter inches
00:00:24
and here it measures about eight and
00:00:27
eight eight and a quarter or so so
00:00:29
basically we have these pieces of drive
00:00:32
hangers cut so that you have nine and a
00:00:34
quarter plus one inch plus one inch so
00:00:37
it's 11 and a quarter inches and so
00:00:39
we're going to be hanging our next piece
00:00:40
over here
00:00:42
and we have 14 and a quarter inches
00:00:44
between each one of these two pieces of
00:00:46
hanging drive
00:00:48
and what i'm going to do next i'm going
00:00:50
to show you how to make these real quick
00:00:51
and then we're going to go ahead and
00:00:52
show our three methods for hanging it up
00:00:54
so after we have our drive cleat cut out
00:00:57
of our long piece which is a 10 foot
00:00:59
section these are cut at 11 and a
00:01:01
quarter inches
00:01:02
what we do next is we take our hand
00:01:04
brakes and we have these little notches
00:01:07
on the handbrakes that's a quarter inch
00:01:09
half inch three quarter one inch so we
00:01:11
have it set at one inch right now and
00:01:13
we're just going to fold this over just
00:01:15
like this now you could leave the bottom
00:01:17
and fold that over after you hang the
00:01:18
duct or we could go ahead and and do
00:01:21
that as well
00:01:22
the big thing right now is when we're
00:01:24
putting these holes in depending on how
00:01:26
you put these holes this thing can spin
00:01:28
around and you want to be safe and not
00:01:29
try to cut yourself so
00:01:31
what i end up doing a lot of times is
00:01:33
i'll take a scratch aw and i'll just
00:01:35
punch a hole
00:01:40
so you could do it that way or what you
00:01:42
could do
00:01:44
is you could take a zip screw uh with a
00:01:46
drill bit on it in order to get your
00:01:48
second hole
00:01:52
so you could do it that way so either
00:01:54
way is good and we're going to be using
00:01:56
deck screws for this in order to mount
00:01:58
them into uh the joists i use two
00:02:01
galvanized deck screws because i know
00:02:02
they're not going to rot over time and
00:02:04
they're not going to fall out i've seen
00:02:05
enough ducts
00:02:06
actually fallen down the whole entire
00:02:08
duct falling down just because there's
00:02:10
one roofing nail that was nailed through
00:02:12
the bottom of this into the floor joist
00:02:14
and that's just pulled down over time
00:02:15
due to that wet crawl space
00:02:18
[Music]
00:02:42
[Music]
00:02:52
in this case the lip of the duct that's
00:02:54
going to come in is going to go inside
00:02:56
of this duct because you can see the lip
00:02:58
for this existing duct is right here in
00:03:00
the s-lock so this is what it looks like
00:03:02
right here
00:03:03
and same thing up here we have our lip
00:03:06
where we're going to be putting our
00:03:08
other piece is going to go above this
00:03:10
existing duct right here and so now
00:03:13
we're going to go ahead and get to
00:03:14
method one so for method one which is
00:03:16
the most common duct hanging method
00:03:18
we're going to put both of our pieces of
00:03:19
s-lock on our existing duct ahead of
00:03:21
time
00:03:22
and so these pieces of s-lock they're
00:03:24
also referred to as slip and slide are
00:03:26
cut to about 1 8 of an inch smaller than
00:03:28
the inside dimension of the duct
00:03:30
and you can see that both s locks are
00:03:32
facing the same direction so our new
00:03:34
duct is going to be coming right in uh
00:03:36
to the top section right here so method
00:03:39
one we're going to take our duct
00:03:42
and we're going to rest it on our
00:03:43
shoulder just like this we're going to
00:03:44
get this side lined up first so we're
00:03:46
going to kind of come at an angle like
00:03:47
this i have my hand on the ear right
00:03:50
here on purpose just to try to line it
00:03:52
up into that top s lock as well
00:03:55
we're going to take our drive while
00:03:57
we're holding this duct up with our left
00:03:58
hand and we're going to slide that up
00:04:01
just like that now we're going to take
00:04:03
this stuff and we're going to wiggle it
00:04:06
so it's all the way back like that
00:04:08
and then we're going to pull it like
00:04:10
this
00:04:11
so when we pull it like that it should
00:04:12
tighten the ears
00:04:14
in the back
00:04:18
just like that
00:04:26
then we can fold these over
00:04:32
next we're going to get our drill and
00:04:34
secure these
00:04:35
so now that we're we're here since these
00:04:38
pieces of drive were already pre-bent
00:04:40
we're just going to put one zip screw
00:04:42
right in the bottom here one here
00:04:44
and then we're going to fold these over
00:04:48
and we can put two screws in these so we
00:04:50
can either put two in the bottom or one
00:04:52
in the bottom and one in the middle
00:04:54
after putting your zip screws into the
00:04:56
drive in order to hold the duct you
00:04:57
would then take your mastic
00:04:59
in order to seal up your duct so you
00:05:01
don't have any air loss now we're going
00:05:03
to move on to method number two
00:05:05
method number two includes pre-hanging
00:05:07
this secondary duct right here and
00:05:09
you're only going to put the screws on
00:05:10
the bottom
00:05:12
of the hanging drive cleats and this
00:05:13
allows the duct to pivot back and forth
00:05:16
in order for you to put your s lock it
00:05:19
now you may need to do this if you have
00:05:21
a
00:05:22
hard position that this duct is in or
00:05:23
you have a long section of duct and you
00:05:25
can't hold it up in the air
00:05:45
now another thing in reference to this
00:05:47
if you're kind of stuck in a position
00:05:48
where you you can't go back and forth
00:05:50
with this duck and it's just tight right
00:05:52
here what you could do is you could take
00:05:54
your tin snips
00:05:55
in order to cut
00:05:58
like right here a half inch this way and
00:06:00
you can take your
00:06:01
other 10 snips and come this way and cut
00:06:03
a half inch and that will give you the
00:06:05
gap in order to basically hit on your
00:06:08
s-lock and you can you can hit it all
00:06:09
the way in same thing with the top and
00:06:11
then you can go ahead and put your your
00:06:13
drive in place for
00:06:14
a tight situation
00:06:20
[Music]
00:06:31
[Music]
00:06:32
so method number three is attaching
00:06:36
multiple lengths of duct work on the
00:06:37
ground and putting them together we're
00:06:39
going to be screwing them together you
00:06:40
take a long zip screw in order to do
00:06:42
that so the s-lock doesn't bend open
00:06:45
and then we're going to
00:06:47
mastic this together you could do as
00:06:49
many as even like say 24 foot of duct
00:06:51
work and just hang the whole section
00:06:53
together with two or three texts this
00:06:55
way it avoids you having to do this one
00:06:58
little section at a time so now we're
00:07:00
going to go ahead and add our mask to
00:07:02
this while it's on the ground so we can
00:07:03
get everything very easily at this point
00:07:06
we would also cut any colors in that we
00:07:08
need and we would seal them up against
00:07:10
the duck with the mastic
00:07:27
we're going to continue adding mastic to
00:07:29
this and then we're gonna hang our duck
00:07:34
[Music]
00:08:02
now that we have this all masticed up
00:08:03
and we have our bottom section screwed
00:08:06
i'm going to have brandon help me lift
00:08:07
all these sections of duct up at one
00:08:09
time and we're going to go ahead and
00:08:10
hang them in place
00:08:19
you got it thanks
00:08:22
[Music]
00:08:43
so
00:08:47
[Music]
00:09:00
all right good to go
00:09:02
we hung this duck without insulation but
00:09:04
if you were going to add insulation
00:09:05
because you're hanging in the duct in a
00:09:07
non-conditioned area you would add the
00:09:09
insulation after the mastic and have it
00:09:11
all taped and secured ahead of time
00:09:12
before you hang the duct so i hope this
00:09:14
video helped you understand multiple
00:09:16
methods in order to hang ductwork and
00:09:18
the different techniques in which you
00:09:20
could use and the the methods for the
00:09:22
the drive and the slide and how many
00:09:25
screws to put in all that type of stuff
