The video introduction explains that the story "With the Photographer" is on the syllabus for class 10 English literature. The presenter mentions a short video that covers the themes and characters of the story. In this video, a detailed line-by-line explanation of the story will help viewers tackle questions and understand its larger themes. The story revolves around a first-person narrator and a photographer.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The narrator introduces the story's photographer as seemingly lifeless and analytical, comparing him to a scientist. The description provides insight into the photographer's detached temperament. The narrator implies that this demeanor is common among photographers, adding a humorous element as it's contrasted with their usual warm profession, which helps capture natural expressions.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The narrator experiences a long wait at the studio, highlighting his patience and hinting at the photographer's disregard for customer convenience. Upon meeting, the photographer's cold interaction is further emphasized, continuing the previously humorous depiction of his scientific detachment. The narrator humorously exaggerates that the photographer is praying, depicting the awkwardness and tension in the setting.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
As the photographer examines the narrator, detailed preparations for the photo are humorously described. The narrator is asked to adjust his appearance in exaggerated ways, leading to a humorous but critical view of the photographer's approach. This highlights the photographer's obsession with technical perfection and disregard for human elements, which fuels the comedic tone.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The narrator finally objects to the photographer's treatment and defends his appearance with emotion, asserting ownership of his face. The tension peaks when the photographer takes the photo during this outburst, ironically capturing the narrator's animated expression. This adds depth to the humor by contrasting human emotion with the meticulous photographic process.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Upon seeing the altered photograph, the narrator struggles to recognize himself. The photographer has changed many features, using fictional processes, which the narrator finds offensive and impersonal. The video explains how this highlights the photographer's disconnect from genuine human emotion, increasing the comedic criticism of his work.
- 00:30:00 - 00:39:45
The story concludes with the narrator passionately rejecting the photograph as a 'worthless bauble' due to its lack of authenticity and personal connection. Through humor and irony, the story explores themes of individuality, authenticity versus artificiality, and societal expectations. The video stresses the importance of being true to oneself and hints at examining power dynamics in personal interactions.

Donna Adelson Gets Hit with Surprising Twist in Wicked Family Murder Case
- 00:00:00hello namaskar vanakam with the
- 00:00:02photographer that's part of the treasure
- 00:00:05chest icsc class 10 English literature
- 00:00:09syllabus I hope you have already seen
- 00:00:11the short video that I did in which I
- 00:00:13explained the themes of this particular
- 00:00:15story talked about the characters and
- 00:00:18what is it that we are essentially in
- 00:00:20for as far as this short story is
- 00:00:23concerned so please to have a look at
- 00:00:25that short video because it'll help you
- 00:00:28understand this particular story better
- 00:00:30in this video I'm going to do a line by
- 00:00:32line word by word explanation of this
- 00:00:35entire story so that it's easy for you
- 00:00:37to attempt any questions and also
- 00:00:41thereafter look at the uh attempt any
- 00:00:44questions and look at the larger
- 00:00:46thematic uh questions that this
- 00:00:49particular story raises as well so let's
- 00:00:51get straight into the
- 00:00:58story okay so this is an image generated
- 00:01:03about the photographer as you can see uh
- 00:01:06this particular this is a story about
- 00:01:08two characters the narrator written I
- 00:01:10mean in first person account and then
- 00:01:12the photographer so this image will help
- 00:01:15you kind of get an idea about the kind
- 00:01:17of person we are talking about in this
- 00:01:19short story now it starts by I want my
- 00:01:24photograph
- 00:01:26taken I said the photographer looked at
- 00:01:30me without enthusiasm now this
- 00:01:32particular line is important because it
- 00:01:36is telling you about the narrator's
- 00:01:39first
- 00:01:40impression about the photographer he
- 00:01:43looked at me without
- 00:01:48enthusiasm please mark this as a key
- 00:01:51phrase it instantly tells you about the
- 00:01:54photographers
- 00:01:58temperament
- 00:02:01my handwriting keeps going for it
- 00:02:02because I have to hold this Spen in a
- 00:02:04particular slant and that kind of upsets
- 00:02:06my handwriting it tells you about his
- 00:02:09disposition and temperament
- 00:02:12okay he was a drooping now he describes
- 00:02:16his physical features he was a trooping
- 00:02:19man in a gray suit gray again kind of
- 00:02:23you know conveys a sense of
- 00:02:27dullness okay slightly insipid kind of
- 00:02:31nature insipid again conveys the same
- 00:02:33thing you know not someone very bright
- 00:02:36with the Tim eye of a natural scientist
- 00:02:39now this is an important phrase all
- 00:02:42these are important key phrases please
- 00:02:45mark them either in your book or write
- 00:02:47them in a separate notebook now this
- 00:02:50particular phrase Paints the picture of
- 00:02:53the photographer as someone who is
- 00:02:57extremely observant
- 00:03:00when you say natural scientist
- 00:03:02scientists are known to have an eye for
- 00:03:04detail they look at the minute things in
- 00:03:08great detail so it gives you a sense
- 00:03:10that he's extremely analytical extremely
- 00:03:13observant right it's like a scientist
- 00:03:17who is studying a specimen for example
- 00:03:19you know in a biology lab right but at
- 00:03:22the same time the use of the word dim ey
- 00:03:27it kind of also conveys that this while
- 00:03:30he's
- 00:03:31observing that observation lacks any
- 00:03:35kind of warmth it is not friendly in
- 00:03:38nature it does not have any kind of an
- 00:03:41emotional connection right it's not
- 00:03:44friendly it doesn't have an emotional
- 00:03:46connection it is not something which
- 00:03:48makes you feel wanted it doesn't make
- 00:03:51you feel liked or loved or you know
- 00:03:55there is that kind of a friendly
- 00:03:57connection is not established
- 00:04:00so it kind of gives you a sense of a bit
- 00:04:05of an odd behavior as far as the
- 00:04:07photographer is concerned understood but
- 00:04:10he says at the same
- 00:04:12time but there's no need to describe him
- 00:04:15everybody knows what a photographer is
- 00:04:18like he says that this is how most
- 00:04:20photographers seem to be like so the
- 00:04:22narrator seems to have met some other
- 00:04:25photographer who is also a bit like this
- 00:04:28peculiar slightly odd so he says there's
- 00:04:32no really need to describe him I mean in
- 00:04:35more detail than this because he thought
- 00:04:38this was the most peculiar part of it
- 00:04:40the other parts are like what all
- 00:04:42photographers look like right so there's
- 00:04:44really no need to understand because I'm
- 00:04:46sure you know what a photographer really
- 00:04:49looks like now
- 00:04:54uh the other important point that I want
- 00:04:57to highlight is that the there is an
- 00:05:00element of humor out here you know you
- 00:05:03don't need to this thing you know
- 00:05:04everybody knows what a photographer
- 00:05:05looks like because
- 00:05:08photographers and I have known many
- 00:05:11photographers uh people associated with
- 00:05:13the audio visual
- 00:05:14medium are generally known to be very
- 00:05:17warm people because they keep trying to
- 00:05:19talk to you trying to amuse you in order
- 00:05:22to get the right kind of expression
- 00:05:25right so when you say that he was a cold
- 00:05:28detached kind of a person almost
- 00:05:31resembling a natural scientist that
- 00:05:34makes the comparison seem very ironic
- 00:05:37very odd and therefore a bit humorous
- 00:05:41okay so that's how the element of humor
- 00:05:44is injected out there he said sit there
- 00:05:46he said and wait I waited an hour now
- 00:05:49that seems a little strange because
- 00:05:50nobody in the photo studio would
- 00:05:53normally uh make you wait for an
- 00:05:56hour uh also let me add one more thing
- 00:05:59that you know the the the narrator is
- 00:06:01also assuming that most people would be
- 00:06:04familiar with the image and the
- 00:06:07personality of a photographer right so
- 00:06:09it kind of creates a sense of
- 00:06:11familiarity with the theme the topic of
- 00:06:15the entire uh story itself with the
- 00:06:18photographer is the title itself of the
- 00:06:21story right so uh it kind of allows when
- 00:06:26he says that you know everyone knows
- 00:06:28what photographer looks like is like so
- 00:06:32it allows the reader when he says that
- 00:06:34line to me in my mind I'm also creating
- 00:06:38the image of a photographer so in that
- 00:06:41sense the character is universalized you
- 00:06:44know everyone all of us have gone to a
- 00:06:46photo studio at some point or time or
- 00:06:48the other to click a passport size
- 00:06:50photograph to fill in for some
- 00:06:51application for an examination etc etc
- 00:06:54or to apply for a passport so it makes
- 00:06:57the photographer relatable to the
- 00:07:00reader now sit there he said and wait I
- 00:07:04waited an hour I read the L's companion
- 00:07:07for 1912 the girls magazine for 1902 and
- 00:07:11the infants journal for 1888 so he seems
- 00:07:14to have a stack of books running past
- 00:07:18behind I mean running into many years
- 00:07:20right many old copies I began to see
- 00:07:23that I had done an unwarrantable thing
- 00:07:26in breaking in on the privacy of this
- 00:07:29man's scientific Pursuits with a face
- 00:07:33like mine now first thing waited for an
- 00:07:36hour what does it convey what does this
- 00:07:41convey it conveys that the narrator is
- 00:07:43an
- 00:07:45extremely patient kind of person okay
- 00:07:49the second thing that it conveys is that
- 00:07:51the photographer is not bothered he's
- 00:07:55not bothered about keeping a customer
- 00:07:57waiting for one full are right that's
- 00:08:02what is a
- 00:08:05negative trait in the
- 00:08:09photographer but it is the author who is
- 00:08:11feeling apologetic because he says that
- 00:08:14I felt I had done an unwarrantable thing
- 00:08:17unwarrantable means something which
- 00:08:19should not have been done you know
- 00:08:21something which was not warranted means
- 00:08:23something which should not have been
- 00:08:24done because he seemed he feels that he
- 00:08:27kind of disturbed the privacy
- 00:08:30of this particular photographer while he
- 00:08:32was engaged in his work and his work for
- 00:08:36the second time he uses the word related
- 00:08:38to science so he feels that he's almost
- 00:08:41a scientist by his looks by his entire
- 00:08:45demeanor and he feels that I intruded
- 00:08:49into his timey and that also with a face
- 00:08:53like mine so you see even he is not
- 00:08:56completely confident about his own looks
- 00:09:00so he says with a face like mine so it
- 00:09:02means that he does not think very highly
- 00:09:07the narrator does not think very highly
- 00:09:10of his own looks so that's an important
- 00:09:14element that you need to bear in mind
- 00:09:16yes the photographer does later alter
- 00:09:19the way the photograph comes out however
- 00:09:23the narrator himself at least at this
- 00:09:25stage says that with a face like mine
- 00:09:28you know Mary Shak
- 00:09:31kind of thing they say know very rudely
- 00:09:32in Hindi it's a bit like
- 00:09:34that after an hour the photographer open
- 00:09:37the inner door he said come in he said
- 00:09:40severely again you see this also conveys
- 00:09:43a slightly rude kind of disposition it
- 00:09:47conveys that the person is very
- 00:09:50Grim by Nature
- 00:09:53right I went into the studio sit down
- 00:09:56said the photographer there's no please
- 00:09:59sit done I sat down in a beam of
- 00:10:01sunlight filtered through a sheet of
- 00:10:04factory cotton hung against a frosted
- 00:10:07Skylight so that's how the photo studios
- 00:10:10inner room where the photograph would be
- 00:10:12shot is looking like there is a beam of
- 00:10:16sunlight and that's kind of filtering
- 00:10:18through a sheet of factory cotton so
- 00:10:21again something maybe a little coarse c
- 00:10:24a RS e that is rough hung against a
- 00:10:27frosted Skyline
- 00:10:30now
- 00:10:38um the photographer rolled a machine
- 00:10:41into the middle of the room and crawled
- 00:10:43into it from behind now the word crawled
- 00:10:48obviously suggests that it is a bit of a
- 00:10:52cramped kind of a space there isn't much
- 00:10:55space for him to move around behind the
- 00:10:57camera naturally he's almost
- 00:10:59crawling into it and obviously maybe
- 00:11:01putting that black cloth Etc if it was
- 00:11:04an oldtime kind of a photo studio he was
- 00:11:08only in it for a second just time enough
- 00:11:11for one look at me so he's gone inside
- 00:11:14seen the subject and immediately comes
- 00:11:17out and then he was out again tearing at
- 00:11:19the cotton sheet tearing conveys a sense
- 00:11:24of annoyance that he's not too happy
- 00:11:27with what he saw through the lens and
- 00:11:31the window paints with a hooked stick
- 00:11:34apparently frantic for light and air so
- 00:11:36he's making those kind of adjustments
- 00:11:39then he crawled back into the machine
- 00:11:43again and Drew a little black cloth over
- 00:11:46himself what I told you normally they do
- 00:11:47that right you would have seen it in a
- 00:11:50photograph studio photo
- 00:11:53studio this time he was very quiet in
- 00:11:56there so you see also the narrator is
- 00:11:59very observant he's kind of describing
- 00:12:01to you very very minute details I knew
- 00:12:06that he was praying and I kept still now
- 00:12:09I knew that he was praying and I kept
- 00:12:12still this statement lends a sense of
- 00:12:15humor H but it's also very ironic
- 00:12:20because it's very unlikely that a
- 00:12:22photographer would be sitting there and
- 00:12:23praying before taking a photograph or
- 00:12:26while taking a photograph so there's an
- 00:12:28element of what there's an element of
- 00:12:31exaggeration uh that also points to the
- 00:12:34narrator's awkward position because when
- 00:12:36the photograph is to be taken you're
- 00:12:38almost like still with a smile on your
- 00:12:41face normally right so it's also he's
- 00:12:44taking his own time and he feels
- 00:12:49that that kind of a feeling while he's
- 00:12:52trying to hold his position maybe his
- 00:12:54breath maybe his smile maybe his
- 00:12:56expression right uh and talking about
- 00:12:58the
- 00:12:59photographer praying also makes the
- 00:13:02entire line feel very absurd so this is
- 00:13:05what is an example of uh the author's
- 00:13:08very light-hearted kind of humor uh the
- 00:13:12statement also reveals the unease of the
- 00:13:15narrator you know he's feeling very
- 00:13:16uneasy I mean why is it taking so long
- 00:13:19it just needs to press the shutter and
- 00:13:20I'm done why is it taking so long and
- 00:13:24he's kind of unsure about how he should
- 00:13:26react I kept still the fact that he says
- 00:13:30I kept still holding the expression
- 00:13:32holding the smile holding I mean
- 00:13:34ensuring that he's not blinking right
- 00:13:36lest the photograph comes with his eyes
- 00:13:38closed right so also he seems to be a
- 00:13:42little intimidated by the photographer
- 00:13:45who is not a very friendly kind of a
- 00:13:47person so he does not want to disturb
- 00:13:50him while he thinks almost as if he's
- 00:13:52inside
- 00:13:54praying so he doesn't want to disturb
- 00:13:57the supposed prayers of the photographer
- 00:14:00it highlights the narrator's timid
- 00:14:03personality he's a little I wouldn't say
- 00:14:05derpo but he's a little timid and his
- 00:14:08tendency to defer to Authority because
- 00:14:11the
- 00:14:12person because of his demeanor has kind
- 00:14:15of established that you know I'm not a
- 00:14:17very friendly s so he because he's a
- 00:14:19timid personality he's kind of differing
- 00:14:22to that Authority Deering means uh he's
- 00:14:25kind
- 00:14:27of uh
- 00:14:29feeling in a slightly inferior position
- 00:14:31bab that Authority he's feeling as
- 00:14:33though that person is in a slightly
- 00:14:36Superior position uh and he should not
- 00:14:38try to make him annoyed in any way uh
- 00:14:42that kind of a thing and he's not very
- 00:14:43comfortable with this very awkward
- 00:14:45strange kind of position I hope I have
- 00:14:47made this elaborately
- 00:14:50clear I've elaborated it on a bit too
- 00:14:53much so in terms of the plot this
- 00:14:56particular statement I knew that he was
- 00:14:58praying how would he know I don't know I
- 00:15:01knew that he was praying and I kept
- 00:15:04still it kind of creates a sense of
- 00:15:07suspense you would wonder why you why
- 00:15:09does he think or why does he know that
- 00:15:11he was praying inside when the
- 00:15:13photographer came out at last he looked
- 00:15:16very grave grave means very serious at
- 00:15:20the same time you know what a grave
- 00:15:23means in context of death right so it
- 00:15:26does not give you a good feel you first
- 00:15:28say he was praying then you use a word
- 00:15:31like
- 00:15:32grave I wonder why and shook his head
- 00:15:36the face is quite wrong he
- 00:15:38said the face is quite wrong so the word
- 00:15:43grave has a slightly ominous kind of
- 00:15:47tone okay it also conveys that the
- 00:15:51photographer is a very serious kind of
- 00:15:53personality very disapproving when he
- 00:15:56says that the face is quiet
- 00:16:00wrong I know I answered quietly I have
- 00:16:04always known it now with a face like
- 00:16:08mine he said before now he's saying I
- 00:16:10have always known that the face is quite
- 00:16:12wrong so he's agreeing with it so you
- 00:16:15realize that the
- 00:16:17narrator is a very timid kind of
- 00:16:20personality he does not stand up and say
- 00:16:23how dare you say that the face is wrong
- 00:16:25it's my face I've come to take a
- 00:16:27photograph take the photograph the way
- 00:16:29it is he does not say that he sides side
- 00:16:33means again it's it is a sign of
- 00:16:39extreme
- 00:16:41disapproval I think he said the face
- 00:16:44would be better three quarters full now
- 00:16:48uh it's it's a funny way of saying that
- 00:16:51the photographer wants a better angle of
- 00:16:54the face by turning the head slightly
- 00:16:57now he says I want a three quarter
- 00:17:00profile instead of a full profile it
- 00:17:03means something like that it also shows
- 00:17:05his obsession with technical Perfection
- 00:17:08but he obviously lacks understanding of
- 00:17:10human emotions by saying that the face
- 00:17:12is all wrong right to say that the face
- 00:17:14is quite wrong needs to be three
- 00:17:16quarters full as if you know the face is
- 00:17:19like a vessel Bon you are feeling in
- 00:17:22something you know it's almost being
- 00:17:24said with the kind of phrases that he's
- 00:17:26using the kind of vocabulary he's using
- 00:17:28using it's offensive and it's almost
- 00:17:31kind of you know equating him with a
- 00:17:34vessel I'm sure I said enthusiastically
- 00:17:37for I was glad I'm sure it would that it
- 00:17:40would it would be better if it was three
- 00:17:41quarters full um I said enthusiastically
- 00:17:46now what it conveys the way he the
- 00:17:49photographer puts it and also the
- 00:17:51narrator agreed with it the
- 00:17:53photographers inability to communicate
- 00:17:55politely to communicate effectively uh
- 00:17:59uh the very odd behavior of the
- 00:18:01photographer for I was glad to find that
- 00:18:04the man had such a human side to him how
- 00:18:06wrong could that could he be he feels
- 00:18:10that the man is actually being very
- 00:18:12Humane by saying it again shows a very
- 00:18:15timid side of his so he's kind of uh
- 00:18:19going with all the very unnatural and
- 00:18:23impolite observations being made by the
- 00:18:25photographer he's accepting all of that
- 00:18:29he's accepting all of that even if it
- 00:18:33doesn't quite fully understand it so
- 00:18:35would yours in fact and then he goes on
- 00:18:37to say tumar Shak would be better three
- 00:18:41quarters full in fact how many faces one
- 00:18:43sees that are apparently Hard narrow
- 00:18:45limited but the minute you get them
- 00:18:47three quarters full they get wide large
- 00:18:50almost boundless in and his sentence
- 00:18:54doesn't get kind of uh completed okay so
- 00:18:58he's trying to say that you know there
- 00:18:59will be many faces which would kind of
- 00:19:01you know uh not be okay but the moment
- 00:19:04you shoot it in a certain manner it
- 00:19:07would look better but the photographer
- 00:19:09had ceased to listen means he had kind
- 00:19:11of shut him off he was not even
- 00:19:13listening to what this guy had to uh say
- 00:19:17it also
- 00:19:18reinforces this particular thing it kind
- 00:19:21of reinforces that he is very brisk in
- 00:19:24nature he doesn't
- 00:19:27care he has gone on he came over and
- 00:19:30took my head in his hands and twisted it
- 00:19:32sideways that's what he wants that kind
- 00:19:34of a profile picture I thought he meant
- 00:19:37to kiss me you know he he again
- 00:19:39misunderstands and I closed my eyes
- 00:19:43weird not okay but I was
- 00:19:47wrong I was wrong Weir I meant as in his
- 00:19:50reaction uh but I was wrong he twisted
- 00:19:53my face as far as it would go and then
- 00:19:56stood looking at it okay
- 00:20:02you know till such time that the neck
- 00:20:04would allow it he side again again
- 00:20:07showing disapproval I don't like the
- 00:20:10head he said then he went back to the
- 00:20:12machine and took another look through
- 00:20:14the lens open the mouth a little he said
- 00:20:18I started to do so close it he added
- 00:20:21quickly then he looked again the ears
- 00:20:23are bad he said droop them a little more
- 00:20:26as though you can really droop your eyes
- 00:20:28you're not an elephant are you thank you
- 00:20:30now the eyes roll them in under the lips
- 00:20:33I know like inside the lips you kind of
- 00:20:35roll them put the hands on the knees
- 00:20:38please first time he's saying please and
- 00:20:41turn the face just a little upward you
- 00:20:44see photographers have that habit
- 00:20:45they'll always say look up like this you
- 00:20:47know it will not be like looking
- 00:20:49directly at the camera they'll say look
- 00:20:50up at like this for reasons I've never
- 00:20:52been able to understand and turn the
- 00:20:54face because they want to catch the
- 00:20:56light on the face but it makes the face
- 00:20:58face look very upward and turn the face
- 00:21:01just a little upward yes that's better
- 00:21:04now just expand the lungs so and hump
- 00:21:08the neck that's it now hump the neck
- 00:21:10means Arch the neck forward like this
- 00:21:13okay and just contract the waist ha and
- 00:21:17twist the hip up toward the
- 00:21:20elbow now I still don't quite like the
- 00:21:24face it's just a triple to full triple
- 00:21:27means just a bit too full so you see the
- 00:21:33detailing he's getting into every part
- 00:21:38of his body the upper part is about the
- 00:21:40knees he's getting into he wants the
- 00:21:43posture to be just about right for him
- 00:21:47to get the right
- 00:21:50photograph and then he doesn't like it
- 00:21:53okay this is the other image that
- 00:21:55created I swing myself round on the
- 00:21:57stool though here is sitting on the
- 00:21:59stool that is on the chair or the stool
- 00:22:02that he was sitting on stop now he
- 00:22:05decides that I don't like what he's
- 00:22:07saying he's kind of condemning okay to
- 00:22:09an extent I agreed
- 00:22:13fine but if you keep on hammering at it
- 00:22:17I am not really going to be very amused
- 00:22:20stop I said with emotion
- 00:22:25H but I think with dignity
- 00:22:29he said it emotionally but he ALS it was
- 00:22:32also a very dignified kind of voice this
- 00:22:35face is my face it is not yours it is
- 00:22:40mine I own it I have lived with it for
- 00:22:4340 years and I know it's false okay I
- 00:22:47know it's not the greatest phas but I it
- 00:22:51is my phase I've lived with it for 40
- 00:22:53years that's how we know the age and I
- 00:22:55know it's false I know it's out of
- 00:22:58drawing in the sense it is
- 00:23:00not of perfect
- 00:23:03proportions I know it wasn't made for me
- 00:23:06but it is my face maybe it was not made
- 00:23:09for me you know I could have had a
- 00:23:10better face but then it is my face and
- 00:23:14this is the only face I have I was
- 00:23:17conscious now he's getting very
- 00:23:19emotional as he's saying it because he
- 00:23:22feels that he's being humiliated for no
- 00:23:25reason by the photographer I was
- 00:23:28conscious of he's getting emotional you
- 00:23:30know his voice is breaking I was
- 00:23:32conscious of a break in my voice but I
- 00:23:35went on such as it is I have learned to
- 00:23:39love it in the sense that it's the only
- 00:23:41face this is my face and because this is
- 00:23:44my only face I have begun to love it and
- 00:23:47this is my mouth not yours these ears
- 00:23:51are mine and if your machine is very
- 00:23:54narrow and he started to rise from the
- 00:23:57seat to hell with you
- 00:23:59how dare you insult my looks like this
- 00:24:02my face like
- 00:24:04this
- 00:24:06right so he's getting very emotional and
- 00:24:09giving it back to the photographer in as
- 00:24:11dignified a voice as he
- 00:24:16could T he clicks the photograph the
- 00:24:19photographer had pulled a string the
- 00:24:22photographer the photograph had been
- 00:24:24taken I could see the machine still
- 00:24:26staggering from the shock so the whole
- 00:24:28machine was kind of kind of shaking as a
- 00:24:31result of that press of the
- 00:24:34shutter in this case maybe it's an old
- 00:24:37child photograph which is why some
- 00:24:38string may have been pulled I think said
- 00:24:40the photographer pursing his lips
- 00:24:42pursing his lips like this in a pleased
- 00:24:45smile so the first time you see the
- 00:24:48photographer was pleased and it shows
- 00:24:50his obsession with taking a perfect
- 00:24:55photograph till now he was very
- 00:24:57disapproved of his subject but now for
- 00:25:00the first time he had what the narrator
- 00:25:03says a pleased smile caught the features
- 00:25:07just in a moment of Animation animation
- 00:25:10is you know you're not sitting there
- 00:25:12here and saying okay now let me tell you
- 00:25:15the story of with the photographer okay
- 00:25:19this is part of your icsc treasure chest
- 00:25:22textbook if I start telling you
- 00:25:25explaining you videos like this you
- 00:25:27would PR press the stop button I know
- 00:25:30that I'm naturally an animated kind of
- 00:25:33person so it helps but otherwise also
- 00:25:35you need to and especially when it is a
- 00:25:37virtual medium even in a classroom
- 00:25:39physical classroom you need to get the
- 00:25:42students interested isn't that so so he
- 00:25:46says I caught the features just in a
- 00:25:49moment of Animation why was it animated
- 00:25:51because that was the point when the
- 00:25:54narrator was getting annoyed and he was
- 00:25:57speaking in an emotional state of mind
- 00:26:00however in a dignified manner so he
- 00:26:03feels that while he was expressing
- 00:26:05himself his angst his anger the fact
- 00:26:09that he was upset at the photographer's
- 00:26:11reaction the photographer thought that
- 00:26:13he had caught the right expression the
- 00:26:15right animated kind of expression though
- 00:26:19I know it for a fact that uh if you go
- 00:26:21for um a Visa photograph especially to
- 00:26:24the USA the photographer will tell you
- 00:26:26do not smile do not smile they make you
- 00:26:29take your of his spe and do not smile
- 00:26:32also you have to have a very stoic kind
- 00:26:35of
- 00:26:36expression so I said bitingly features
- 00:26:40huh you didn't think I could animate
- 00:26:42them I suppose but let me see the
- 00:26:44picture so he says that ah features um I
- 00:26:49mean what features you thought I could
- 00:26:51not animate you think I was a very dull
- 00:26:53kind of a person anyway let me see the
- 00:26:55picture no no there's nothing to see yet
- 00:26:56I have to develop the negative first so
- 00:26:58an old style photo studio come back on
- 00:27:01Saturday and I will let you see a for
- 00:27:03proof of it on Saturday I went back the
- 00:27:06photographer beckoned me in beckon me in
- 00:27:10means he made
- 00:27:12him come inside he made him come
- 00:27:16inside which kind of is a little more
- 00:27:19welcome than the first time where he
- 00:27:20made him wait for one hour you know he
- 00:27:22just said sit there and wait and called
- 00:27:25him after one hour right this time he
- 00:27:27kind of called him in
- 00:27:28I thought he seemed quieter and Graver
- 00:27:31than before Graver means more serious
- 00:27:34and more quiet than before okay this is
- 00:27:38more
- 00:27:40serious I think too there was a certain
- 00:27:43pride in his manner in what he had
- 00:27:46managed to achieve with the narrator's
- 00:27:49photograph so he kind of sens that he
- 00:27:51was feeling good about what he had
- 00:27:53managed to do right so it all kind of
- 00:27:57conveys the that he takes in his work he
- 00:28:00unfolded the proof of a large photograph
- 00:28:02and we both looked at it in silence he
- 00:28:06took out the photograph is it me I asked
- 00:28:10so you see right from the first
- 00:28:11impression he thinks he korka
- 00:28:14photographic yes he said quietly it is
- 00:28:17you and we went on looking at
- 00:28:19it the eyes I said hesitatingly
- 00:28:23hesitatingly because it shows that he's
- 00:28:26still a little intimidated and he's a
- 00:28:29little hesitant about not rubbing him
- 00:28:33the wrong way you know he doesn't want
- 00:28:34to get on his wrong side the eyes don't
- 00:28:38look very much like
- 00:28:40mine they're not looking like mine oh no
- 00:28:44he answered I retouched them they come
- 00:28:45out splend splendidly don't
- 00:28:53they fine but surely my eyebrows don't
- 00:28:57look like that not like that that no
- 00:28:59said the photographer with a momentary
- 00:29:01glance at my face he looks at me and say
- 00:29:03no the eyebrows are removed we have a
- 00:29:05process now the deli for putting in new
- 00:29:08ones so he says that there is a new kind
- 00:29:11of a
- 00:29:12process with which you can remove the uh
- 00:29:17I mean old one and put in new ones now
- 00:29:19Deli is not a term which is usually
- 00:29:22associated with photography so it seems
- 00:29:24to have been made up by the author out
- 00:29:27here uh a fictional process the
- 00:29:29photographer claims to use okay so it is
- 00:29:34very obvious from the manner that the
- 00:29:36photographer is in love with his craft
- 00:29:38you know when he says don't they aren't
- 00:29:40they looking good don't they it's a
- 00:29:42rhetorical question he expects that the
- 00:29:44person will say yes they do but this guy
- 00:29:46not he is not very happy with him with
- 00:29:49it
- 00:29:50right you will notice here where we have
- 00:29:53applied it to carry the hair away from
- 00:29:56the bro I brow I don't like the hair low
- 00:30:00on the skull so he's saying I don't like
- 00:30:05it who gave you the right to decide
- 00:30:08whether you like the hair on the skull
- 00:30:10or not right so he says that I didn't
- 00:30:13like it so I removed it using this
- 00:30:15particular process but you don't don't
- 00:30:17you he's also asking him a rhetorical
- 00:30:19question and he's now getting a little
- 00:30:22annoyed no he went on I don't care for
- 00:30:25it I like to see get the hair clear back
- 00:30:27to the superficies and make out a new BR
- 00:30:30line so he says I want the hair to be
- 00:30:31moved back and then I will make a new
- 00:30:34eyebrow what about the
- 00:30:36mouth what about the mouth he I said
- 00:30:39with the bitterness that was lost on the
- 00:30:41author the photographer is that mine is
- 00:30:43it what about the
- 00:30:45mouth and now he's getting very
- 00:30:47sarcastic and bitter he's angry now okay
- 00:30:51so you see the temperament
- 00:30:53changing every time initially he's a
- 00:30:55little timid and then the photograph
- 00:30:58IR him irritates him so much that his
- 00:31:01anger starts coming out it's adjusted a
- 00:31:03little yours is too low I found I
- 00:31:05couldn't use it hello hello as sguru
- 00:31:09would say hello the years though I said
- 00:31:12strike me as a good likeness they're
- 00:31:15just like mine
- 00:31:17okay yes that's so but I can fix all
- 00:31:20right that all right change we have a
- 00:31:23process now called the sulfide for
- 00:31:25removing the ears entirely and then he
- 00:31:27can recreate the
- 00:31:30years that's what he's trying to convey
- 00:31:33sulfide again like Deli I will see if
- 00:31:37and this time like last time the
- 00:31:39photographer was not cut him off this
- 00:31:42time he cuts him off listen I
- 00:31:45interrupted drawing
- 00:31:51myself wa minute
- 00:31:54H is it okay he says listen I
- 00:32:00interrupted drawing myself up means he's
- 00:32:03kind of summoning all the courage okay
- 00:32:06and animating my features to their full
- 00:32:08extent so he's very animated at this
- 00:32:10point in time and speaking with a
- 00:32:13withering scone withering scone suggests
- 00:32:15anger and bitterness
- 00:32:19okay that should have blasted the man on
- 00:32:21the spot because he's getting so angry
- 00:32:23that he could have that anger could have
- 00:32:26that SCA could have blasted the man on
- 00:32:28the spot listen I came here for a
- 00:32:32photograph a picture something which mad
- 00:32:36though it seems would have looked like
- 00:32:39me you may think it is mad but it would
- 00:32:43have looked like me I wanted something
- 00:32:45that would depict my face as Heaven gave
- 00:32:48it to me okay so he's kind of making a
- 00:32:51connection that heaven is what gave Gods
- 00:32:54gave this face to me it's a humble gift
- 00:32:58that the gods have given to me I wanted
- 00:33:01something that my friends might keep
- 00:33:03after my death so that they can
- 00:33:06reconcile to my loss you know okay he
- 00:33:09died but now this Photograph does not
- 00:33:11even look like me you have altered it
- 00:33:14completely it seems that I was mistaken
- 00:33:17what I wanted is no longer done go on
- 00:33:20then with your brutal work what you have
- 00:33:23done is murdering my face it is brutal
- 00:33:27what you have done this is an important
- 00:33:29key phrase what you have done is brutal
- 00:33:33he's using very strong words take your
- 00:33:36negative or whatever it is you call it
- 00:33:38dip it in sulfide bromide oxide cowhide
- 00:33:41he's kind of trying to rhyme it cowhide
- 00:33:45means leather made from the skin of a
- 00:33:46cow but here he's just kind of rhyming
- 00:33:49it sulfide bromide oxide cowhide
- 00:33:51anything you like remove the eyes
- 00:33:53correct the mouth adjust the face
- 00:33:55restore the lips reanimate the neck tie
- 00:33:58and reconstruct the waist coat coat it
- 00:34:00with an inch of gloss you know make it
- 00:34:02more glamorous shade it emboss it you
- 00:34:05mean kind of give it a layer of
- 00:34:08something decorative gild it means cover
- 00:34:10it with gold till even you acknowledge
- 00:34:14that it is
- 00:34:15finished then when you have done all
- 00:34:18that keep it for yourself I don't need
- 00:34:21it and your friends they may value it
- 00:34:25they may value it to me it is is but a
- 00:34:29worthless Bobble it is but it is only a
- 00:34:33worthless Bobble worthless Bobble bobble
- 00:34:37describes a small cheap ornament a
- 00:34:42small
- 00:34:44cheap ornament it's piece of jewelry but
- 00:34:48it's a very small and a very cheap not a
- 00:34:50very expensive ornament which has very
- 00:34:53little or no real value worthless
- 00:34:56emphasizes the narrator's complete
- 00:35:00dissatisfaction with the photograph he
- 00:35:02does not consider it to be a valuable
- 00:35:06representation of his personality of his
- 00:35:09face of his looks and therefore he
- 00:35:12considers it completely useless and
- 00:35:15completely unimportant right I broke
- 00:35:18into tears and left he completely broke
- 00:35:22down he was so animated so emotional
- 00:35:26that he broke down into years and left
- 00:35:29that photographers photo studio so why
- 00:35:33is the photograph considered worthless
- 00:35:35because it's not an accurate
- 00:35:37representation of the way the narrator
- 00:35:39looks because the photograph does not
- 00:35:41resemble him at all the photographer has
- 00:35:45retouched
- 00:35:46it recalibrated it excessively using
- 00:35:50different devices and he has altered it
- 00:35:53to such an extent that the photograph is
- 00:35:55completely unrecognizable as the
- 00:35:58photographer as the visual
- 00:36:00representation of this 40-year-old
- 00:36:02narrator he feels the narrator feels
- 00:36:04that he has taken away all his unique
- 00:36:07characteristics so he has as a result
- 00:36:10this is an important phrase that you
- 00:36:11should use he has lost his
- 00:36:15individuality in
- 00:36:18that in the
- 00:36:22photograph in the photograph okay he
- 00:36:25wanted an accurate representation so
- 00:36:26that his friends could could remember
- 00:36:28him from the photograph after his death
- 00:36:29but what he has given it given him looks
- 00:36:32nowhere like his real person so the
- 00:36:35workless Bobble obviously one of the
- 00:36:37most important phrases used in this
- 00:36:39particular story it
- 00:36:41underlines his complete disillusionment
- 00:36:44as I said with the photographics
- 00:36:46photographers work and the photographic
- 00:36:49process so what it underlines as I
- 00:36:52explained to you in the first video is
- 00:36:54the need for authenticity okay what is
- 00:36:57real is always more
- 00:37:00valuable and it is and whatever is
- 00:37:03altered and artificial is like a
- 00:37:05worthless bubble so you need to take a
- 00:37:08call whether you want the real person or
- 00:37:10you want a worthless bubble okay so
- 00:37:13that's what it talks about so it it
- 00:37:16talks about U the
- 00:37:18individuality versus what this guy is
- 00:37:21representing Society to an extent the
- 00:37:24society expects you to look like
- 00:37:26something at a larger level if you look
- 00:37:28at it more philosophically you are
- 00:37:31something like this but the society
- 00:37:33expects you to look like something
- 00:37:35different now whether you would want to
- 00:37:37change yourself based on what the
- 00:37:39society wants or whether you say that
- 00:37:41this is how I will be and this is the
- 00:37:43way I will continue to do because I feel
- 00:37:45this is my individuality you understand
- 00:37:49so that's another way of looking at this
- 00:37:51entire story so uh the third thing which
- 00:37:56you need to be mind ful of is also the
- 00:37:59theme of power
- 00:38:01dynamics okay the theme of power
- 00:38:05dynamics see what I will do is closer to
- 00:38:08your examination we will be putting out
- 00:38:09test papers in which many of these
- 00:38:11question and answers in the test papers
- 00:38:13will be discussed but the theme of power
- 00:38:16D and our s SW success test papers are
- 00:38:18always a huge hit the theme of power
- 00:38:21dynamics the you know the power
- 00:38:23equations between the photographer he's
- 00:38:25intimidated then he gives him a piece of
- 00:38:28his mind then he leaves then he comes
- 00:38:30back again he's a little timid but then
- 00:38:32when he sees his photograph altered so
- 00:38:35brutally he decides he can't take it in
- 00:38:38and he gets very emotional breaks down
- 00:38:41and leaves that photo studio okay
- 00:38:45so while it is it makes use of
- 00:38:49light-hearted humor it also delivers an
- 00:38:52extremely important message uh that we
- 00:38:55need to uh bear in mind uh
- 00:39:00that it's very important to be the real
- 00:39:03you in life and that's the largest um
- 00:39:07question that you need to ponder over
- 00:39:09this could be a four mark question in
- 00:39:11your examination as to what is the
- 00:39:14larger message that a story like the
- 00:39:16with the photographer gives to us okay I
- 00:39:19hope the story is absolutely clear I've
- 00:39:23explained every word and every line out
- 00:39:25here so I don't think there should be
- 00:39:27any doubts as I said the SWA success
- 00:39:30test papers towards the end of the year
- 00:39:32closer to your examinations will help
- 00:39:33you prepare uh for the questions and
- 00:39:36answers in a much better manner both
- 00:39:38mcqs as well as the long format question
- 00:39:40and answers thank you very much Tata
- 00:39:42bye-bye God bless you
