00:00:00
in the Middle East Rebel forces are now
00:00:02
just outside of Syria's thirdd largest
00:00:04
city the last government stronghold on
00:00:05
the road to the capital Damascus
00:00:08
Margaret Evans brings us up to date on
00:00:10
the lightning
00:00:12
offensive the legacy of Syria's alassad
00:00:16
Dynasty being dragged through the
00:00:18
streets of hamama the head all that's
00:00:21
left of a statue of former president
00:00:23
Haas alassad who son Bashar now faces A
00:00:26
Renewed Insurgency spreading across the
00:00:29
land
00:00:32
land from Hammer the rebel groups who
00:00:35
last week captured Aleppo are on the
00:00:38
March South towards homes the next city
00:00:41
on the road to
00:00:43
Damascus the Turkish president Reb tab
00:00:46
erdogan has wished them well saying the
00:00:49
Syrian president had rejected a
00:00:51
conversation with him ID hmer I would
00:00:56
say we hope for this advance to continue
00:00:58
without any issues he said although he
00:01:01
cautioned against terrorist elements in
00:01:04
their midst turkey is home to 4 million
00:01:06
Syrian refugees displaced during the
00:01:09
long Civil War and a stable Aleppo could
00:01:13
allow many to return that's where the
00:01:16
main Rebel leader has been making
00:01:18
himself known Abu Muhammad Al jalani is
00:01:21
an islamist with ties to al-Qaeda in the
00:01:24
past trying to moderate His Image
00:01:27
pledging to rebuild Syria
00:01:30
displaced individuals scattered across
00:01:32
the world those drowning in the seas and
00:01:35
those living in tents on the borders of
00:01:37
other countries what kind of Victory are
00:01:39
we talking
00:01:42
about Russian war planes bombed a bridge
00:01:46
between hamama and Holmes in support of
00:01:48
Damascus but many analysts are still
00:01:51
waiting to see what kind of fightback
00:01:54
the Syrian regime might be capable of
00:01:57
bringing the level of dysfunction in the
00:02:00
Syrian regime forces is astounding hio
00:02:04
vien is with the international crisis
00:02:07
group in neighboring Lebanon if they
00:02:09
manage to take hums then I think uh it's
00:02:14
then think many things that nobody
00:02:16
thought possible could become possible
00:02:19
that would cut Damascus off from the
00:02:21
Syrian Coastline Al Assad's alawite
00:02:24
minority
00:02:25
stronghold and there are other key
00:02:28
developments Syrian Birds taking control
00:02:31
of a government City in the Eastern
00:02:32
desert and in the South Rebels claiming
00:02:35
to control one of the border crossings
00:02:38
with Jordan that Frontier reportedly now
00:02:41
closed Margaret Evans CBC News
00:02:45
Beirut for more on the situation in
00:02:47
Syria we've reached Joshua Landis the
00:02:49
director for the center for Middle East
00:02:51
studies at the University of Oklahoma
00:02:53
Joshua Landis is good to see you thanks
00:02:54
for being here today pleasure uh the
00:02:57
rebels are moving fast there's a report
00:02:59
from Reuters that Rebels have taken the
00:03:01
southern city of Dara under a deal with
00:03:03
the Army to secure the Army's orderly
00:03:06
withdrawal what does it say about Bashar
00:03:09
al-assad's ability to hold on if his
00:03:11
army is negotiating the Handover of
00:03:13
towns to
00:03:15
Rebels uh well it looks really bad the
00:03:17
the Syrian Army doesn't have much fight
00:03:20
left in it and it has been melting away
00:03:22
in front of these cities Aleppo Hama
00:03:26
humps now is um the big Battlefront and
00:03:29
that is the key city as your journalist
00:03:32
said uh the main highway from Damascus
00:03:35
to Tartus the coastal cities which is
00:03:38
the stronghold of the alawites runs
00:03:41
right south of of humps whoever owns
00:03:44
humps is going to be able to cut that
00:03:45
off and if the rebels take humps they'll
00:03:48
cut Damascus off and Damascus is an
00:03:50
overwhelmingly Sunni city as as are the
00:03:54
various Villages around it and uh that
00:03:57
it won't be long before that would fall
00:04:00
if humps is taken we have to see if
00:04:02
there's any fight left in the Syrian
00:04:04
Army and that the Battle of humps will
00:04:06
show that you know these Rebel forces
00:04:08
they've moved at lightning Pace like
00:04:11
this is the the territory they've taken
00:04:12
the areas they've taken but you have
00:04:14
this islamist Rebel group with ties to
00:04:17
Al-Qaeda trying to take out a dictator
00:04:19
with ties to Russia and other Bad actors
00:04:21
I I mean who are these Rebels that that
00:04:24
are un potentially forcing out the
00:04:26
Syrian
00:04:27
dictator well it's many militias but the
00:04:30
major militia Isam HTS which is led by
00:04:35
Abu Muhammad jolani and as your
00:04:37
commentator said jolani worked for both
00:04:40
Isis and Al-Qaeda was sent by kaleth
00:04:44
bagdadi to open a chapter of al-Qaeda in
00:04:47
Syria and uh he did that with
00:04:49
extraordinary success he has remade
00:04:52
himself in the last um number of years
00:04:55
into a non- Jihadi uh claiming to be a
00:04:59
nationalist now he's given up and
00:05:00
suppressed those elements within uh elra
00:05:05
he who who were hoping to fight
00:05:08
Europeans and Americans and be an
00:05:10
internationalist and so he's he's really
00:05:12
remade himself and has set up a really
00:05:16
professional not only professional
00:05:18
military but a professional media outfit
00:05:21
that has reassured Christians that they
00:05:23
are not going to chop heads or take it
00:05:27
or attack them and has been reaching out
00:05:30
to all sorts of syrians saying we're
00:05:32
going to take over the country don't
00:05:34
fight us we will treat you well the big
00:05:37
question mark is how he will treat the
00:05:39
alawites and they have been fleeing in
00:05:42
front of his forces uh to the Coastland
00:05:47
and that that will be the big battle is
00:05:50
taking the coastal areas where most of
00:05:53
the alawites live and they're 12% of the
00:05:55
Syrian population is this conversion
00:05:59
from Isis and Al-Qaeda to a Syrian
00:06:03
nationalist is there evidence that that
00:06:05
is sincere and real you know because you
00:06:08
looking at it from a western point of
00:06:09
view when you see Isis and al-Qaeda in
00:06:11
the history you get anxious how how
00:06:13
should we view
00:06:14
this well there are many syrians who are
00:06:17
anxious as well and and we just don't
00:06:19
know you know the Taliban when they
00:06:21
retook the capital carala I mean the
00:06:24
capital of Afghanistan they they
00:06:26
promised that they would not they would
00:06:28
treat women well that they had learned a
00:06:30
lot and changed uh and of course they
00:06:32
forbid women after sixth grade from
00:06:34
going to school so we
00:06:37
don't and this group haam looks at the
00:06:42
Taliban as a uh as a model in many ways
00:06:46
so it it's unclear how much their spots
00:06:50
have changed but they are in a big
00:06:52
Coalition of other syrians and as they
00:06:54
conquer these major cities there are a
00:06:56
lot of secular syrians there are a lot
00:06:58
of Christians there's a lot of aloes
00:07:00
ismaelis other minorities and they're
00:07:02
you know Syria is 10% Kurdish as well so
00:07:06
they're not going to want to be
00:07:08
led by a Taliban light or uh heavily
00:07:13
islamist governments but we've seen
00:07:17
video that not controlled by the
00:07:20
government or by the the new Rebels come
00:07:22
out of them toping Christmas trees
00:07:24
smashing up liquor stores and doing
00:07:26
other things that islamists do so the
00:07:29
the
00:07:30
it's
00:07:30
unclear what the long-term effects of
00:07:34
this will be on the Syrian people so
00:07:36
it's a massive Coalition of different
00:07:38
militias coming together with a common
00:07:39
goal of taking out the al-assad regime
00:07:42
he has been an ally of Vladimir Putin
00:07:44
and relied on Russia in the past
00:07:45
Russia's military assets are very
00:07:47
heavily occupied right now in Ukraine so
00:07:50
I if Russia can't come to his Aid I mean
00:07:53
what do we know about the Assad regime's
00:07:55
ability to hold on to defend itself here
00:08:00
well you're absolutely right and Israel
00:08:01
has just destroyed heah largely and as
00:08:05
well as attacked Iran and it's been
00:08:08
pounding the Syrian Army for a year at
00:08:11
least three times a week it's been
00:08:14
bombing military manufacturing sites uh
00:08:18
important parts of the military it's
00:08:20
killed most of the top Iranians in Syria
00:08:23
in a number of operations so it has
00:08:26
really weakened the Syrian Army and
00:08:28
there isn't a lot of fight left in it uh
00:08:31
the Syrian people are fed up with this
00:08:33
regime by and large and many were hoping
00:08:36
for a peace dividend When The War sort
00:08:38
of petered out in 2000 it never came
00:08:41
there heavy American sanctions on this
00:08:43
America owns all the oil and gas so
00:08:45
that's not coming to the to the um to
00:08:49
the Syrian government and so Assad has
00:08:50
not been able to rebuild he hasn't been
00:08:53
been able to bring back electricity many
00:08:55
of the schools repair so it's a bleak
00:08:59
future with Assad and people don't want
00:09:01
to fight and die for this government
00:09:04
we'll have to see what the new one
00:09:05
brings and whether America will lift
00:09:07
those sanctions return oil and gas to
00:09:10
the Damascus or keep it for the Kurds uh
00:09:13
these are going to be big questions and
00:09:15
the government if the Rebels win they're
00:09:18
going to look to the International
00:09:19
Community to lift those sanctions and to
00:09:22
renew relations and help Syria rebuild
00:09:24
okay I I literally have 60 seconds left
00:09:26
so maybe it's unfair for me to ask you
00:09:27
this question but we see President ERD a
00:09:29
NATO Ally in Turkey cheering on the
00:09:31
rebels how do you expect the West to
00:09:34
respond to this because there is a lot
00:09:35
of uncertainty and difficulty on either
00:09:38
side of
00:09:39
it well I think they'll give him some
00:09:41
grace period but uh it'll be there'll be
00:09:44
tremendous pressure to lift the
00:09:46
sanctions and to let them rebuild and to
00:09:48
lift this terrorist designation and
00:09:51
jolani has just jettison today he has
00:09:54
changed his name back to his childhood
00:09:56
name he's given up this n dear jolani
00:09:58
because
00:10:00
it sounds El it sounds shih yes so he's
00:10:05
changing his name he's doing everything
00:10:06
he can and there going to be a lot of
00:10:08
countries that are going to try to help
00:10:10
him get back in the good graces of the
00:10:12
West uh fascinating stuff on on a fast
00:10:15
moving story Joshua Landis the director
00:10:17
for the C Center for Middle East studies
00:10:18
at the University of Oklahoma it's good
00:10:20
to meet you sir thank you for being here
00:10:21
today pleasure being with you David
