think is said about the star in the

gospel is not said right and then uh but

there are some things we can know about

the star yeah so go so there are a

number of possibilities that people have
00:01:27
have raised for what the star could be
00:01:29
um often times you'll hear a lot of
00:01:31
people say Well it must have been some
00:01:33
kind of miraculous thing it's like not a
00:01:36
normal star because the wise men are
00:01:38
following it and normal Stars don't move
00:01:41
around that way you can't they I mean
00:01:43
even the planets which do move against
00:01:45
the background to fixed Stars they don't
00:01:47
lead you around by the nose no you know
00:01:51
and and and so people have this idea
00:01:54
that the wise men are following the star
00:01:57
and that's totally wrong wait I thought

them and when they get to Bethlehem it's

like providentially over the house from

their perspective that they end up going

to but it's not leading them it's just a

it's a Divine coincidence that they

recognize and rejoice at but that's so

so we really don't have evidence that

this is some Supernatural light that God

is moving around in the atmosphere the

normal word for Star I me we should we

should understand the star the same way

we would understand um any passage in

Scripture starting with the basic

meanings of the words in the languages

in which it's written and only proposing

system system what we would call

what kinds of celestial phenomena what

kinds of lights in the sky could people

have used to predict the birth of a new

king and then you but you just named

them all and I named them all so we can

start naring them down okay so what we

think of as a star or what the Ancients

would refer to as fixed Stars they

maintain the same position to from a
00:06:02
human point of view they maintain the
00:06:04
same position in the sky relative to

each other so like you look at the Big

Dipper the stars are all in the same
00:06:10
positions relative to each other that
00:06:12
they were last night and last year and
00:06:15
100 years ago and things like that they
00:06:17
rotate around the nor around the north

Celestial pole but they keep the same

positions relative to each other and

that means that all of the fixed stars

go through their cycle once a year so

unless you have a newborn Jewish King

year which you don't the fix the fixed

stars are not good candidates for what

what the Magi would have seen right okay

neither would constellations be and

sometimes in the in some ancient

languages the word star was used for an

constellations all do exactly the same

meteor looks to be a falling star it

take this trip and go to Jerusalem and

start heading to be Bethlehem and hey

that's that same meteor

meteors are too transitory yeah um

comets so um there have been proposals

that uh what they saw was a comet it is

impossible but it is not probable

and there are two reasons for that um

one is that um that we don't have a

comet on record in the right year of in

the year of Jesus's actual birth there

there were some comets in earlier years

and people who are using the wrong date

yeah for Jesus's birth will think oh the

comet was was this one of the things you

find out when you study the star is you

got to get the birth year right before

um and people who look in the wrong year

comets normally were taken as bad Omens

rather than as good ones I see and so

comets it's not plausible and you need

to look in the um astrological systems

of the people who are plausible

candidates for the Magi and see what did

they think of comets and I'm not aware

of anybody who's found a good

interpretation and we just don't have a

possibility is new stars and the Latin

and we do actually have some records um

there's a star here that wasn't there

is if it's a new star it's not part of

your astrological system oh so how would

you interpret it it doesn't have any

significance yeah you have to see the

thing in the sky first and then notice

What It's associated with down here on

Earth to build it into your astrological

system so new stars had no meaning when

they showed up and you couldn't use a

new star to predict the birth of a

Jewish King okay uh so uh not fix Stars

constellations meteors comets supernovas

what is the star not the Sun or the moon

either even though those were considered

wandering Stars right but but again they
00:10:15
do the same thing all the time it's not

like the moon did a new thing this week

uh okay so what do what do you let's

narrow it down then what is it planets

planets is the last remaining category

and they were meaningful in uh in

various astrological systems in the past

the and so the question is which system

and which event are we talking about and

in recent years uh there is a um there's

a gentleman named Michael mnar who

proposed a horoscope for Jesus based on
00:10:48
the date that he believes Jesus was born

and um how the the Sun the moon and the
00:10:55
planets would have been understood on
00:10:57
that horoscope um what's it's called a
00:11:00
nativity and in Nativity doesn't just
00:11:03
mean Christmas it's any birth and so a
00:11:06
birth horoscope is known as a nativity
00:11:09
okay and anybody can have a nativity
00:11:11
horoscope drawn up so he drew up one for
00:11:13
Jesus based on the date that he thinks
00:11:15
uh Jesus would have been born and he
00:11:19
interpreted it according to the Greco
00:11:21
Roman system of astrology which we know
00:11:24
a lot about because
00:11:27
um sort of in the late 1 and early 2nd
00:11:30
Century there was a guy named Claudius
00:11:32
tmy who wrote uh a book on the on
00:11:37
astronomy called the alest and then he
00:11:39
wrote four books on astrology known as
00:11:41
the tetrabiblos or the four books and so
00:11:45
this was first century inspired Greco
00:11:48
Roman astrology we know a lot about it
00:11:51
and um and and a lot of people have
00:11:54
bought into malar's version of this I
00:11:58
don't for for two reasons the first one
00:12:00
he's got the wrong year he's too early
00:12:03
um Jesus actually was born the evidence
00:12:07
indicates and you know I'm not going to
00:12:10
I mean I'll arm wrestle someone over
00:12:12
this but I'm not going to you know fight
00:12:13
to the death over it but the evidence
00:12:16
suggests that and there's a lot of
00:12:18
evidence for this that Jesus was born in
00:12:21
the latter part of the Year 3 BC or the
00:12:24
first part of the year 2 BC M but you
00:12:26
hear lots of people who were thrown off
00:12:29
and say he must have been born a year at
00:12:31
least a year or
00:12:33
two before 4 BC because 4 BC is when
00:12:37
Herod died right that so Jesus must have
00:12:39
been born in six or seven um no that
00:12:43
dating of Herod is wrong and there's a
00:12:46
bunch of evidence that shows it's wrong
00:12:48
and once you clear away the evidence
00:12:51
showing it's wrong you then default back
00:12:54
to the evidence showing from the gospels
00:12:57
and particularly the Gospel of Luke and
00:13:00
the church fathers indicating that Jesus
00:13:02
was born in the 28th year of Augustus
00:13:05
Caesar which is latter 3 early 2 mhm and
00:13:10
um and so I don't think molnar's version
00:13:12
is right for that reason because he's
00:13:14
got the wrong year he's also got the
00:13:16
wrong system of interpretation he's
00:13:18
using Greco Roman astrology but the as
00:13:22
the Magi came from the East so we should
00:13:25
look to the east now it's not impossible
00:13:28
that they could have used C in astrology
00:13:30
but you wouldn't expect them to because
00:13:34
they're not from Greece or Rome they're
00:13:36
from farther east right and it's not
00:13:39
like people in the East didn't have
00:13:41
their own systems of astrology in fact
00:13:43
they did um I mean the Zodiac the
00:13:47
constellations of the zodiac were
00:13:50
invented in Mesopotamia and then they
00:13:53
spread to Greece and Rome and we can
00:13:55
even show based on a variety of things
00:13:57
we can show when and where in
00:13:59
Mesopotamia the Zodiac was
00:14:02
invented um because of the astrological
00:14:05
correlations that are involved oh how
00:14:07
interesting yeah so we can tell it's
00:14:09
like within a couple of degrees longit
00:14:11
or latitude longitude and latitude of
00:14:14
this position and it's within this
00:14:17
century plus or minus a few
00:14:20
centuries and and that's where it came
00:14:23
from so the Babylonians had been doing
00:14:25
astrology longer than the Greeks or
00:14:27
Romans they had their own system and
00:14:29
worked differently than um than the U
00:14:34
than the Roman
00:14:36
system before and there has been some
00:14:38
recent research done on the Star of
00:14:41
Bethlehem from the perspective of
00:14:43
Babylonian astrology mm before we get
00:14:46
there though I want to talk about a a a

documentary that everybody is constantly

asking me about every Christmas oh

really that came out a few years ago it
00:14:58
was produced by by an Evangelical
00:15:00
gentleman named Rick lson okay and it's

called the Bethlehem
00:15:04
star and in
00:15:06
it lson notes some phenomena that occur

first thing is he gets the date of
00:15:13
Jesus's birth correct okay and he so
00:15:18
that's a big plus right there and he
00:15:20
notes that in 3 BC and 2 BC there were
00:15:24
astronom astronomical phenomena that are
00:15:27
significant that could be an explanation

for the Bethlehem star especially on The
00:15:32
View that it's a
00:15:33
planet and um the uh what he notes is
00:15:39
that in September of 3
00:15:41
BC

Jupiter does something very unusual now

Jupiter has an orbit that is 12 years
00:15:50
long and you would think okay well then
00:15:53
it's going to do the same thing every 12
00:15:55
years but not really because as Jupiter

is orbiting Earth is also orbiting and
00:16:02
we have a one-year orbit so our
00:16:05
perspective on Jupiter's orbit is going
00:16:07
to change constantly exactly so you're
00:16:09
not going to see Jupiter do exactly the
00:16:11
same thing every 12 years normally as
00:16:14
Earth passes Jupiter you will see
00:16:16
Jupiter move um let's say with respect
00:16:20
to a given star let's say regulus you'll
00:16:22
see Jupiter pass regulus once but if it
00:16:25
so happens it's one of those years where
00:16:29
we're in the right position you'll see
00:16:31
Jupiter pass regulus then reverse its
00:16:34
course which is called going retrograde
00:16:37
and then pass it
00:16:39
again okay and so you can see Jupiter
00:16:42
encounter regulus three in some years
00:16:45
you can see Jupiter encounter regulus

times and that happened in September of

interacting and it's three times it's

and it's in the constellation Leo and

Leo is a lion I mean Leo is the Latin

word for lion and the lion in the Bible

is associated with the tribe of Judah
00:17:49
and that's where Jesus is from is the
00:17:51
tribe of Judah so you've got this U

triple King event going on with the King
00:17:57
planet in the king star with with the
00:17:59
astrological sign that's associated with
00:18:01
the tribe of
00:18:03
Judah T exciting it's exciting isn't it
