probably the most highly requested video
  • 00:00:07
of all time i'm going to be sharing with
  • 00:00:08
    you guys how i started
  • 00:00:10
my brand so if you're new here and this
  • 00:00:12
is the first video that you're watching
  • 00:00:13
of me hello hi i'm natalia
  • 00:00:15
feel free to subscribe if you want more
  • 00:00:17
    fun business and fashion content
  • 00:00:19
anyway i started my business back in the
  • 00:00:21
    summer in june of 2020
  • 00:00:22
and i have been able to grow it pretty
  • 00:00:25
    decently i would say
  • 00:00:26
in the past almost six months it'll be
  • 00:00:28
six months next week so i technically
  • 00:00:30
i'm not at the six month mark yet but
  • 00:00:32
i've been able to grow my brand to over
  • 00:00:33
    10 000 followers
  • 00:00:34
on instagram i've gotten over 400 orders
  • 00:00:37
    and it's all been
  • 00:00:38
within the time span of five months so i
  • 00:00:40
want to share with you guys my
  • 00:00:41
strategies how i came up with everything
  • 00:00:43
how i managed to gain an
  • 00:00:45
audience so that hopefully you guys can
  • 00:00:47
start your businesses and be equally as
  • 00:00:49
    successful if not more
  • 00:00:50
so to make sure i cover everything i
  • 00:00:52
asked you guys on instagram to send me
  • 00:00:53
some questions of what you want me to
  • 00:00:54
    cover
  • 00:00:55
i'm gonna kind of integrate them into my
  • 00:00:56
topics i'm also going to leave each
  • 00:00:58
topic and kind of the questions covered
  • 00:00:59
in the description with the timestamp of
  • 00:01:01
when it starts in case you want to
  • 00:01:03
only watch the marketing part of it if
  • 00:01:05
you want to watch financial part of it
  • 00:01:07
or whatever it is you want to get out of
  • 00:01:09
it if there's a certain part of it i'm
  • 00:01:10
going to leave all the time stamps down
  • 00:01:11
    below
  • 00:01:12
so you can skip ahead if you would like
  • 00:01:13
to because i have a feeling this might
  • 00:01:14
be a very long video but
  • 00:01:16
i want to make sure that i put in all
  • 00:01:17
the information possible and really give
  • 00:01:19
you guys everything you want to know
  • 00:01:20
so i don't want to cut it too short
  • 00:01:22
either so that's that without further
  • 00:01:24
    ado
  • 00:01:24
let's get into it so step number one
  • 00:01:28
    let's talk about the concept
  • 00:01:29
that is obviously the most important
  • 00:01:31
part of starting a business is just
  • 00:01:32
knowing like what your business is
  • 00:01:34
what are you doing what is your concept
  • 00:01:36
what is your product why are you
  • 00:01:37
    starting a business
  • 00:01:38
why do you want to do this all these
  • 00:01:40
things all these questions are really
  • 00:01:41
    important to ask yourself
  • 00:01:43
when you're first starting off for me
  • 00:01:44
personally i've always known i wanted to
  • 00:01:46
start a business it wasn't anything new
  • 00:01:47
and out of the blue at all for me it's
  • 00:01:49
something that i've known for a very
  • 00:01:51
    very long time
  • 00:01:52
i didn't think that the time i started
  • 00:01:54
was gonna be the time that i would start
  • 00:01:55
i did not have that in mind at all but
  • 00:01:57
it is something that i've known i've
  • 00:01:58
always wanted to do if that makes any
  • 00:02:00
sense i graduated from the fashion
  • 00:02:02
institute of technology in may of 2020
  • 00:02:04
so this past may with a degree in
  • 00:02:06
    fashion design and obviously
  • 00:02:08
with the pandemic and everything i was
  • 00:02:09
forced to move back home to indiana
  • 00:02:12
where i was before living in new york
  • 00:02:14
    and
  • 00:02:14
i had originally thought that after
  • 00:02:15
graduation i was going to be living in
  • 00:02:17
new york still and that i would be
  • 00:02:19
working for a company and kind of just
  • 00:02:21
building up myself and what not to get
  • 00:02:23
to the point to where i could start a
  • 00:02:24
brand that was kind of my plan that i
  • 00:02:26
had in mind but obviously 2020 had
  • 00:02:28
different plans and i ended up having to
  • 00:02:30
be back home and my only choices seem to
  • 00:02:32
be either get a regular job just to get
  • 00:02:34
myself by and to make sure that i'm
  • 00:02:35
being able to support myself financially
  • 00:02:37
or b start my brand and kind of just go
  • 00:02:39
for it and being the person i am i would
  • 00:02:41
rather take the risky route and i'd
  • 00:02:43
    rather do
  • 00:02:44
    something that i'm passionate about
  • 00:02:45
rather than just be safe so i went ahead
  • 00:02:47
and started my business and it honestly
  • 00:02:49
    has been
  • 00:02:50
a dream ever since it's done really
  • 00:02:51
really well and i've obviously learned a
  • 00:02:53
lot along the way which is why i'm
  • 00:02:54
making this video to help you guys out
  • 00:02:55
but that's kind of my story and how i
  • 00:02:57
started and why i started i knew from
  • 00:02:59
day one that my concept was definitely
  • 00:03:00
going to be ethical fashion above
  • 00:03:02
    everything because it's really important
  • 00:03:04
    that my products are ethically
  • 00:03:06
produced and that no person is harmed in
  • 00:03:08
the process and on top of that i also
  • 00:03:09
    decided to be
  • 00:03:10
very sustainable in my process because
  • 00:03:13
on top of not wanting to
  • 00:03:14
harm any people i don't want to harm the
  • 00:03:15
planet anymore either because i just
  • 00:03:17
have done a lot of research on
  • 00:03:18
fashion and the environment and realized
  • 00:03:20
i didn't want to be part of that problem
  • 00:03:22
so that is where my concept and my ideas
  • 00:03:25
    came from in case you're
  • 00:03:26
wondering so some questions that you
  • 00:03:28
guys gave me that kind of go along with
  • 00:03:29
    that are
  • 00:03:30
how much did you prep before starting it
  • 00:03:32
so honestly i prepped for about a month
  • 00:03:34
    before actually
  • 00:03:35
launching and starting the business like
  • 00:03:37
i said i graduated in may and then i
  • 00:03:39
started my business in late june june
  • 00:03:40
    26th so
  • 00:03:41
between my graduation and launch day is
  • 00:03:43
the time that i was planning and kind of
  • 00:03:44
getting everything ready so i definitely
  • 00:03:46
think that you do need to take that time
  • 00:03:48
to plan and to make sure that you know
  • 00:03:50
what you're doing and make sure that
  • 00:03:51
everything is kind of set up and lined
  • 00:03:53
up i don't think it's one of those
  • 00:03:54
things that you can think about and then
  • 00:03:56
a week later start because i think
  • 00:03:57
that's too soon it doesn't give you time
  • 00:03:59
    to fully develop
  • 00:04:00
your ideas second question is how to
  • 00:04:01
    make your brand recognizable
  • 00:04:03
i really like this question because i do
  • 00:04:05
think it's really important i think it
  • 00:04:06
goes hand in hand with you know really
  • 00:04:08
creating a solid concept for your
  • 00:04:09
business because it's important to make
  • 00:04:11
sure that you're not just another
  • 00:04:12
    business you're not just another
  • 00:04:13
    clothing brand what makes you
  • 00:04:15
special like why would people even want
  • 00:04:17
to follow you why would people want to
  • 00:04:18
buy from you when there is
  • 00:04:20
hundreds of thousands of other stores
  • 00:04:21
they could buy from and this is where
  • 00:04:23
it's really important to have a solid
  • 00:04:24
concept and to really know why you're
  • 00:04:26
    coming into this business
  • 00:04:27
for me like i said it was the idea of
  • 00:04:29
    ethical fashion sustainable fashion slow
  • 00:04:31
    fashion
  • 00:04:32
i follow a lot of brands that are like
  • 00:04:34
me there's i'm not the only one there's
  • 00:04:36
    plenty of incredibly talented designers
  • 00:04:38
that do the same thing that i do but i
  • 00:04:39
found that a lot of the designers that i
  • 00:04:41
    follow
  • 00:04:41
are not the same aesthetic as me they're
  • 00:04:43
not the same vibe i really wanted very
  • 00:04:45
    beautiful like fun feminine pieces
  • 00:04:47
because that's kind of where my
  • 00:04:48
aesthetic lies and a lot of the slow
  • 00:04:49
fashion brands that i followed were
  • 00:04:51
either really boho or a lot of them are
  • 00:04:53
really gender fluid which is wonderful
  • 00:04:55
and i love that but it's just not my
  • 00:04:56
style so i knew that there wasn't
  • 00:04:58
very many people if at all that kind of
  • 00:05:00
did the same thing as i do but also at
  • 00:05:02
the same aesthetic and design point that
  • 00:05:04
    i do so that's where i think that i
  • 00:05:06
become a little bit more recognizable i
  • 00:05:07
also think i have a bit of an advantage
  • 00:05:09
    in the sense
  • 00:05:10
of like i've had my youtube channel for
  • 00:05:11
a very very long time and it's not like
  • 00:05:13
it's a huge channel or anything but
  • 00:05:15
the fact that i have somewhat of a
  • 00:05:16
    following on there and
  • 00:05:18
i'm able to show the process and show
  • 00:05:19
behind the scenes of my business and
  • 00:05:21
behind the scenes of being a fashion
  • 00:05:22
    designer i think is very
  • 00:05:24
new and unseen and unheard of i think a
  • 00:05:26
lot of fashion designers kind of
  • 00:05:27
hide their process a little bit they
  • 00:05:29
don't want to share the behind the
  • 00:05:31
scenes things they don't want to
  • 00:05:32
share their secrets or anything and i'm
  • 00:05:35
kind of the opposite and i just show you
  • 00:05:36
guys everything i'm pretty open about it
  • 00:05:38
and i think that's also a reason why
  • 00:05:40
people really like to follow me and
  • 00:05:41
really like my business is because i
  • 00:05:43
share all of that so i'm not saying that
  • 00:05:44
you need to have a youtube channel you
  • 00:05:46
need to start sharing everything but you
  • 00:05:48
do need to find something that
  • 00:05:49
makes you stand out from everybody else
  • 00:05:51
and really does make you recognizable as
  • 00:05:53
a brand and as a business and that is
  • 00:05:55
something that you need to think about
  • 00:05:56
    the next questions are over
  • 00:05:57
just my collections in general how many
  • 00:05:59
pieces in a collection how often
  • 00:06:01
honestly i personally do not like to
  • 00:06:03
force creativity upon myself i find that
  • 00:06:06
my best pieces come when i'm not
  • 00:06:07
    necessarily looking for them
  • 00:06:09
so for me it means being inspired by
  • 00:06:11
whatever's around me whatever fabric i
  • 00:06:13
    find whatever it is
  • 00:06:14
i then decide to make something it's not
  • 00:06:16
like i'm forcing myself to come out with
  • 00:06:17
a collection every two weeks or every
  • 00:06:19
    three weeks or whatever
  • 00:06:20
i think it naturally kind of happens
  • 00:06:21
just because i do get inspired naturally
  • 00:06:23
but i'm not forcing it on myself and i
  • 00:06:25
    don't think there is a
  • 00:06:26
golden number of how much you should be
  • 00:06:28
putting out and how many pieces or
  • 00:06:30
    whatever i think it's very personal it's
  • 00:06:31
very up to you and how your business
  • 00:06:33
    works
  • 00:06:34
    [Music]
  • 00:06:35
alright step number two let's talk about
  • 00:06:37
production how are you gonna produce
  • 00:06:38
    your product
  • 00:06:39
for me personally i make all my products
  • 00:06:41
myself i sew them all myself i make all
  • 00:06:43
my patterns i literally do all the
  • 00:06:44
sewing i do it all so it's really easy
  • 00:06:46
for me to kind of skip over
  • 00:06:48
that step just because i don't have to
  • 00:06:49
worry about any sort of middleman on
  • 00:06:51
production but obviously i know that not
  • 00:06:52
everybody wants to sew all of their
  • 00:06:54
products and maybe you do want to send
  • 00:06:56
    them out to manufacturers then
  • 00:06:57
if you do that then you need to make
  • 00:06:58
sure you find a manufacturer you really
  • 00:07:00
align with make sure all of your beliefs
  • 00:07:01
and values are aligned with theirs make
  • 00:07:03
sure you're getting samples and don't
  • 00:07:04
just choose the first one that comes to
  • 00:07:06
your google search page make sure that
  • 00:07:08
you are actually going through all of
  • 00:07:10
them and making sure that you're finding
  • 00:07:12
the one that really suits you
  • 00:07:13
and if you're buying wholesale again
  • 00:07:15
make sure that aligns with your values
  • 00:07:17
make sure that the quality is up to par
  • 00:07:19
you need to make sure that you're really
  • 00:07:20
    investing time into researching all
  • 00:07:22
these things in production because it's
  • 00:07:24
super important that the quality and the
  • 00:07:25
    standard of your product
  • 00:07:27
is as good as you're saying it is you
  • 00:07:28
also need to take into consideration
  • 00:07:30
production time and what that's gonna
  • 00:07:32
look like for you for me personally
  • 00:07:33
since i make everything i kind of know
  • 00:07:35
how much i can make within a week so i
  • 00:07:37
only put out as much as i know i can
  • 00:07:39
make within a two-week period i try to
  • 00:07:41
keep it under one week but i give myself
  • 00:07:42
two weeks just in case i get an
  • 00:07:43
    overwhelming amount of orders or
  • 00:07:45
    anything but
  • 00:07:45
    say i can only make 10 t-shirts in a
  • 00:07:48
week i'm not going to put
  • 00:07:49
30 t-shirts up on my website because i
  • 00:07:51
know i'm not going to be able to fulfill
  • 00:07:52
that in the time that i give my
  • 00:07:54
customers so i only put 10 at a time so
  • 00:07:56
you need to also think about that in
  • 00:07:57
    your production process and
  • 00:07:59
the timing of everything and making sure
  • 00:08:00
    you have enough inventory
  • 00:08:02
of everything that you want questions
  • 00:08:04
that you guys asked that kind of go
  • 00:08:05
along with this one is where do you buy
  • 00:08:06
    bulk fabric
  • 00:08:07
    i personally don't necessarily buy
  • 00:08:09
    fabric in bulk
  • 00:08:10
bulk fabric would be wholesale fabric
  • 00:08:12
pretty much and i don't buy enough for
  • 00:08:14
it to be considered wholesale i feel
  • 00:08:16
like wholesale kind of starts at the 20
  • 00:08:18
and 30 yard mark but i really only buy
  • 00:08:20
like 10 to 15 yards at a time which is
  • 00:08:22
still a big amount of fabric but at the
  • 00:08:24
same time it's not big enough to be
  • 00:08:25
considered bulk just yet so i buy it at
  • 00:08:28
normal places where you can buy fabric i
  • 00:08:29
don't have any specific wholesalers that
  • 00:08:31
i go to or manufacturers or anything
  • 00:08:34
like that this is a list of places that
  • 00:08:35
i like to shop from some of them
  • 00:08:37
are dead stock fabrics vintage fabrics
  • 00:08:39
thrifted fabrics or just natural fiber
  • 00:08:41
fabrics so there's a little bit of
  • 00:08:42
everything but these are my go-to places
  • 00:08:44
    as of right now
  • 00:08:45
and the other most common question is
  • 00:08:47
what equipment do you use what sewing
  • 00:08:48
machine do you use i use a janome
  • 00:08:50
magnolia 7330 and i really really love
  • 00:08:53
it it is definitely a bit pricier on
  • 00:08:54
    sewing machines but it's not
  • 00:08:56
an industrial one or anything i also
  • 00:08:58
    have the singer pro finish
  • 00:08:59
for my serger it's worked really well
  • 00:09:01
for me it's not industrial by any means
  • 00:09:03
    but
  • 00:09:03
does the job and as far as embroidery i
  • 00:09:05
use the brother pe 800 that one is
  • 00:09:07
definitely quite the investment and you
  • 00:09:09
don't need an embroidery machine if you
  • 00:09:11
want to start a business i just
  • 00:09:12
personally wanted that it was kind of
  • 00:09:13
like an extra little bonus that i wanted
  • 00:09:15
but it's not necessary by any means but
  • 00:09:17
    i really love it
  • 00:09:18
it's really great and it is definitely
  • 00:09:20
    more advanced though
  • 00:09:23
next topic let's talk about investment
  • 00:09:25
    let's talk about
  • 00:09:26
money this is probably my most asked
  • 00:09:28
    question is always just about
  • 00:09:30
investments about how much i spend and
  • 00:09:32
    my profits and just
  • 00:09:33
everything like that i get asked so so
  • 00:09:35
much and let me be honest with you i'm
  • 00:09:36
    not
  • 00:09:37
    a financial advisor i don't know that
  • 00:09:39
much about finances i am 21 years old
  • 00:09:41
right now it's not like i have this
  • 00:09:42
whole life of experience under me in
  • 00:09:44
finances whatsoever so like i'm learning
  • 00:09:46
every day with this just as much as you
  • 00:09:47
guys are but here's the thing i
  • 00:09:49
had enough common sense in me to know
  • 00:09:50
that i should never spend more than i
  • 00:09:52
have that's something my parents have
  • 00:09:53
always very much instilled into my brain
  • 00:09:55
they're really really good at budgeting
  • 00:09:57
    and just
  • 00:09:58
    managing their money that's something
  • 00:09:59
that has luckily been translated to me
  • 00:10:01
and i've always been really good about
  • 00:10:02
that i've never overspent i always have
  • 00:10:04
savings like i'm pretty good with my
  • 00:10:05
    money as
  • 00:10:06
is so the financial part wasn't too
  • 00:10:08
awful for me i didn't really need to
  • 00:10:10
invest that much money to begin with
  • 00:10:12
because i had all the equipment already
  • 00:10:14
since i have been sewing forever it's
  • 00:10:16
not like i needed to buy sewing machines
  • 00:10:18
and sergers and all these things like i
  • 00:10:19
have had all these things for a very
  • 00:10:21
long time it was already in my
  • 00:10:22
possession i didn't need equipment the
  • 00:10:24
only things i actually spent money on as
  • 00:10:25
far as like a initial investment i would
  • 00:10:27
    say
  • 00:10:28
were the fabrics that i bought for the
  • 00:10:30
    first collection my website plan
  • 00:10:32
my shipping supplies my business cards
  • 00:10:34
    and my clothing tags
  • 00:10:36
and my po box and that's pretty much it
  • 00:10:38
not much to it so if you want actual
  • 00:10:39
numbers because i know you guys are
  • 00:10:41
    gonna ask here's the thing
  • 00:10:42
i bought five fabrics to begin with for
  • 00:10:44
my first collection but i only
  • 00:10:46
ended up using three fabrics at first
  • 00:10:48
and then the other two later on
  • 00:10:49
so technically if i would have just
  • 00:10:51
bought those first three fabrics for the
  • 00:10:53
    first collection without having bought
  • 00:10:55
the other ones it would have maybe been
  • 00:10:56
    400
  • 00:10:57
for all those fabrics and i think it was
  • 00:10:58
enough for around 10 to 15 of each dress
  • 00:11:01
    that i originally put out
  • 00:11:03
i bought it all at once thinking i was
  • 00:11:04
gonna put all these things out at the
  • 00:11:06
same time but the second set of fabrics
  • 00:11:07
didn't come in till much later so i
  • 00:11:09
ended up just putting out one collection
  • 00:11:10
and then using those for the second
  • 00:11:12
collection so i had planned to make the
  • 00:11:14
first collection a lot bigger but it
  • 00:11:15
just didn't come in time so i
  • 00:11:16
i didn't do that but but technically it
  • 00:11:18
would have been 400 for that first
  • 00:11:20
collection and then my accessories and
  • 00:11:22
like scrunchies and headbands that i had
  • 00:11:23
were made from fabrics that i already
  • 00:11:25
had so that was pretty much free because
  • 00:11:26
i already had them my shipping materials
  • 00:11:28
maybe were like 200 to begin with for
  • 00:11:30
the set that i got and it lasted me
  • 00:11:32
quite a long time my website plan is a
  • 00:11:34
monthly plan but i ended up just buying
  • 00:11:36
the yearly one instead because it is
  • 00:11:38
technically cheaper in the long run and
  • 00:11:40
i think that it may have been 300
  • 00:11:42
or so i decided to get one of the higher
  • 00:11:45
    commerce plans for squarespace but
  • 00:11:46
that's not really necessary at all i
  • 00:11:48
just wanted those features so i went for
  • 00:11:49
    it
  • 00:11:50
and then my business cards were maybe
  • 00:11:51
like 50 bucks and my clothing tags were
  • 00:11:54
    like a hundred dollars for
  • 00:11:55
like a big set of them so overall it
  • 00:11:57
wasn't a huge investment to start off
  • 00:11:59
with i would say it was probably
  • 00:12:01
anywhere between like a thousand two
  • 00:12:02
    thousand five hundred dollars at
  • 00:12:04
    absolute
  • 00:12:04
most for the initial investment of
  • 00:12:06
everything i spent kind of to start off
  • 00:12:09
with but at the same time it's not
  • 00:12:10
necessary for you to spend that much you
  • 00:12:12
    don't need to buy
  • 00:12:13
like that much fabric i could have been
  • 00:12:15
fine buying half the fabric i did so i
  • 00:12:17
    think that
  • 00:12:17
overall when it comes to investment and
  • 00:12:19
your finances and stuff figure out what
  • 00:12:21
works for you and make a budget that's
  • 00:12:23
realistic to yourself and then kind of
  • 00:12:25
work around that so let's go into the
  • 00:12:26
    questions that
  • 00:12:27
talk about pricing and finances so the
  • 00:12:29
first one is how do you price things i
  • 00:12:31
get this question a lot and i think it's
  • 00:12:32
    really hard
  • 00:12:33
sometimes to price things i personally
  • 00:12:35
really want to be an affordable brand i
  • 00:12:37
don't want to be super luxury high-end
  • 00:12:39
but at the same time ethical and
  • 00:12:40
    sustainable fashion is not
  • 00:12:42
cheap and it's not cheap for a reason
  • 00:12:43
it's not because i'm a name brand by any
  • 00:12:45
    chance it's just because
  • 00:12:47
the labor is being paid fairly unlike
  • 00:12:49
    with fast fashion
  • 00:12:50
    and obviously sustainable materials are
  • 00:12:52
    more expensive than non-sustainable
  • 00:12:54
materials which is why people don't use
  • 00:12:55
    them as much so
  • 00:12:56
that makes my prices be a little bit
  • 00:12:59
higher i personally think that obviously
  • 00:13:01
when it comes to pricing things you need
  • 00:13:02
to take into consideration the cost of
  • 00:13:04
    materials so
  • 00:13:05
    say i'm making t-shirts and each t-shirt
  • 00:13:08
takes a yard of fabric to make how much
  • 00:13:10
does that yard cost me 20 bucks all
  • 00:13:12
right well 20 bucks for cost of material
  • 00:13:13
they need to think about other materials
  • 00:13:15
things like threads are you using any
  • 00:13:17
    buttons any zippers
  • 00:13:18
and also this is where you put in the
  • 00:13:20
price for the clothing tag that you put
  • 00:13:22
    on it
  • 00:13:23
and also the shipping supplies that
  • 00:13:24
you're using to send it out add that
  • 00:13:26
up it's probably just a few dollars then
  • 00:13:28
you have to think about labor costs so
  • 00:13:29
for me i pay myself 20
  • 00:13:31
an hour for however long it takes me to
  • 00:13:33
make something so if a t-shirt takes me
  • 00:13:34
    an hour i add 20
  • 00:13:35
to the cost to make sure i cover labor
  • 00:13:37
because obviously at some point in time
  • 00:13:38
i'm not going to be making everything
  • 00:13:40
myself and i'm going to have to be
  • 00:13:41
paying someone and i want to be paying
  • 00:13:42
them fairly so that would be what they
  • 00:13:44
would be getting if i had somebody else
  • 00:13:45
to make it but it's currently just going
  • 00:13:47
to meet because i'm making it and then
  • 00:13:48
once you have that figured out that's
  • 00:13:50
your base minimum like that is what you
  • 00:13:52
need to price it at at the bare minimum
  • 00:13:54
because it has to cover everything and
  • 00:13:55
make sure that you're not losing money
  • 00:13:57
that's when you put in your profit most
  • 00:13:59
stores i would say have a
  • 00:14:00
150 profit margin if not more so if i
  • 00:14:03
were to add all that up it would be like
  • 00:14:05
    what 45
  • 00:14:06
ish per se so you take that 45 and
  • 00:14:08
multiply it by 1.5 which would be 150
  • 00:14:11
and then that gives you 67.5 and that
  • 00:14:14
would be your profit margin so that
  • 00:14:15
would be what you add to the initial 45
  • 00:14:17
so then your final price would be 112.50
  • 00:14:21
    which i think
  • 00:14:22
is a lot of money for a t-shirt so i
  • 00:14:24
personally do not have that high of a
  • 00:14:26
profit margin for me my profit margin
  • 00:14:28
    currently is only 50
  • 00:14:30
which is really really low and it should
  • 00:14:32
    probably be at least 100
  • 00:14:33
just to make sure that i'm actually
  • 00:14:35
making money off of it and i'm able to
  • 00:14:37
reinvest that money and grow my business
  • 00:14:39
but because as of right now when i'm
  • 00:14:40
filming this video i'm living with my
  • 00:14:42
parents and i don't have any
  • 00:14:43
excess things to kind of worry about as
  • 00:14:45
far as rent or food or bills or anything
  • 00:14:47
i'm able to kind of keep my prices a
  • 00:14:48
little bit lower and kind of start
  • 00:14:50
    working up to
  • 00:14:51
where i want them to actually be for me
  • 00:14:52
to make a living but for now it's
  • 00:14:54
comfortable and it's fine and i'm able
  • 00:14:55
to do it but obviously at some point i
  • 00:14:56
am going to have to up them and make
  • 00:14:58
    sure that
  • 00:14:59
i remember my own worth i think it's
  • 00:15:00
really easy for all of us to kind of
  • 00:15:02
feel bad about pricing things higher
  • 00:15:04
and feel like we're not worth that but
  • 00:15:05
realistically we are worth that and we
  • 00:15:08
    need to
  • 00:15:08
understand that for our customers to
  • 00:15:10
also understand that i think that if
  • 00:15:11
you're fully transparent about why you
  • 00:15:13
price things the way you do people will
  • 00:15:14
understand and it will be okay
  • 00:15:16
the next question is what do you use for
  • 00:15:18
bookkeeping and i use quickbooks i'm
  • 00:15:20
    honestly not
  • 00:15:21
too great at keeping up with it too
  • 00:15:23
often i think probably once a month i'll
  • 00:15:24
go on it and kind of sort through all of
  • 00:15:26
    my
  • 00:15:27
payments and everything that has gone
  • 00:15:28
through my card and honestly i like to
  • 00:15:29
use it just to make sure that my money
  • 00:15:31
    in
  • 00:15:31
is always higher than my money out and
  • 00:15:33
making sure i'm not spending more than i
  • 00:15:34
have and making sure that my savings is
  • 00:15:36
going up and all that type of stuff
  • 00:15:40
all right next up let's talk about
  • 00:15:42
branding i think this is so fun i love
  • 00:15:44
branding because it's kind of where you
  • 00:15:46
give your business personality and you
  • 00:15:48
    kind of
  • 00:15:49
choose how you're going to portray
  • 00:15:50
yourself to the world and it's super fun
  • 00:15:52
so branding you got to think about what
  • 00:15:54
your color palette is what kind of fonts
  • 00:15:55
you're using what your overall just
  • 00:15:57
vibe and aesthetic is that's kind of
  • 00:15:59
    where branding comes in
  • 00:16:00
and it's really important to have very
  • 00:16:02
set and specific branding because that's
  • 00:16:03
how people can point out like oh that's
  • 00:16:05
a natalia dress because the aesthetic
  • 00:16:07
the branding you see it or like
  • 00:16:08
you can tell that that is my instagram
  • 00:16:10
graphic because that's my style and
  • 00:16:12
that's my aesthetic and that's my kind
  • 00:16:13
of branding so you definitely do have to
  • 00:16:15
    think about
  • 00:16:16
what your color scheme is going to look
  • 00:16:17
like what kind of fonts do you want to
  • 00:16:19
use do you want it to be very
  • 00:16:20
minimalistic do you want it to be
  • 00:16:22
kind of maximalist over the top do you
  • 00:16:24
want it to be super colorful or more
  • 00:16:25
    muted
  • 00:16:26
just all these type of things make sure
  • 00:16:27
it fits obviously your products and your
  • 00:16:29
personality and just kind of the overall
  • 00:16:31
    vibe you're trying to give
  • 00:16:32
branding also has to do with what your
  • 00:16:34
    mission statement is and what
  • 00:16:36
kind of things you're promoting and your
  • 00:16:38
values your morals all that kind of
  • 00:16:40
stuff also goes into it so make sure
  • 00:16:41
that when you're thinking of your
  • 00:16:42
branding you're also thinking of what
  • 00:16:44
kind of messages you're putting out and
  • 00:16:45
    what you want to promote
  • 00:16:47
things that you want people to see
  • 00:16:49
within your business so for me obviously
  • 00:16:51
    i'm promoting like ethical and
  • 00:16:52
    sustainable fashion and just slow
  • 00:16:53
    fashion
  • 00:16:54
and slow living in general like ethical
  • 00:16:56
    consumption just sustainable living
  • 00:16:58
all that type of stuff is obviously what
  • 00:16:59
i am promoting but on top of that i am
  • 00:17:01
a very inclusive brand so i'm also
  • 00:17:03
    promoting just inclusivity positivity
  • 00:17:05
kindness love all that type of stuff is
  • 00:17:07
part of my branding as well it's part of
  • 00:17:09
what my brand stands for and what i want
  • 00:17:12
    to
  • 00:17:12
show and portray to the world with my
  • 00:17:14
brand so the question that goes with
  • 00:17:16
this one is how do you manage your
  • 00:17:17
    limiting
  • 00:17:18
beliefs and i think that she means like
  • 00:17:20
how do i manage being sustainable and
  • 00:17:21
ethical and kind of keeping up with all
  • 00:17:23
of that in the process and to be honest
  • 00:17:25
it is really really hard to keep up with
  • 00:17:27
obviously for me being ethical means
  • 00:17:28
making everything myself which is a lot
  • 00:17:30
of work and it would be so much easier
  • 00:17:32
for me to send it out to a manufacturer
  • 00:17:33
even an ethical manufacturer but because
  • 00:17:35
i really want to make sure i'm seeing
  • 00:17:37
    the process and i'm overseeing
  • 00:17:39
    everything
  • 00:17:39
i am making it myself instead and even
  • 00:17:41
    with sustainability obviously it limits
  • 00:17:43
the materials i can use and being zero
  • 00:17:46
waste also limits how i can make things
  • 00:17:48
and get rid of things and obviously it
  • 00:17:50
forces me to use and reuse scraps and
  • 00:17:52
little tiny cutting scraps and all that
  • 00:17:54
type of stuff so it is definitely
  • 00:17:56
limiting but at the same time that is my
  • 00:17:57
brand and that is why people follow me
  • 00:17:59
and that is what people expect from me
  • 00:18:01
and want to see from me
  • 00:18:03
so i know that that is what i have to do
  • 00:18:05
    and though it is
  • 00:18:06
frustrating at times and sometimes i get
  • 00:18:08
    really overwhelmed with it
  • 00:18:10
i know that because it has such an
  • 00:18:12
    important purpose and that because
  • 00:18:14
it is such an important cause that it is
  • 00:18:16
worth it in the end and that people are
  • 00:18:18
    gonna appreciate that so
  • 00:18:19
it keeps me motivated in that sense but
  • 00:18:21
it is definitely difficult and i think
  • 00:18:22
it's always gonna be easier to take
  • 00:18:24
the not so good route obviously i could
  • 00:18:27
    be making so much money
  • 00:18:28
as a fast fashion brand and sending my
  • 00:18:30
stuff out to asia to be made
  • 00:18:32
and underpaying people and upping the
  • 00:18:35
    prices like no
  • 00:18:36
other and just make a bunch of profit
  • 00:18:37
    off of people but i
  • 00:18:39
don't want to be that person and i know
  • 00:18:41
that even though it's a lot more work
  • 00:18:42
and that it's going to take
  • 00:18:44
so much more effort it's going to be
  • 00:18:46
worth it because i'm doing good
  • 00:18:47
if that makes any sense that is kind of
  • 00:18:49
my thought process with it it's
  • 00:18:50
    definitely very limiting but
  • 00:18:51
it is really fulfilling at the same time
  • 00:18:56
all right the next step is marketing
  • 00:18:58
    this is probably my most
  • 00:18:59
highly requested topic to talk about
  • 00:19:02
is how did you market yourself how did
  • 00:19:05
    you grow your following
  • 00:19:06
so let's talk about it marketing is
  • 00:19:08
honestly super fun and honestly it's all
  • 00:19:10
self-taught i never took any business
  • 00:19:12
    classes i
  • 00:19:13
was not a business major by any means i
  • 00:19:15
never took any minors in it or did
  • 00:19:16
anything with it it's all just kind of
  • 00:19:18
    self-taught
  • 00:19:19
common sense research type stuff for me
  • 00:19:21
so i'll share with you guys
  • 00:19:22
what has worked for me so obviously
  • 00:19:24
majority of my marketing is done through
  • 00:19:25
social media and i think that's how most
  • 00:19:27
people do it nowadays because it's the
  • 00:19:28
easiest way to get a global audience and
  • 00:19:31
just to kind of reach a lot of people
  • 00:19:32
    especially
  • 00:19:33
in this day and age when everything is
  • 00:19:34
so digital already i think that when
  • 00:19:36
you're starting a business you need to
  • 00:19:37
    think about the
  • 00:19:39
kind of social media platforms you want
  • 00:19:40
to be using are you going to use all of
  • 00:19:42
them are you going to dedicate your time
  • 00:19:43
to one more than the other
  • 00:19:44
kind of think on that a little bit but
  • 00:19:46
my personal opinion is that you kind of
  • 00:19:48
    need to
  • 00:19:48
try a little bit of everything and make
  • 00:19:50
sure that you're in the know and
  • 00:19:51
relevant on all social media because you
  • 00:19:54
never know when one is going to blow up
  • 00:19:55
more than the other or when there's a
  • 00:19:57
new one that you should get on
  • 00:19:58
all that type of stuff is really
  • 00:20:00
important to stay relevant and to stay
  • 00:20:02
on top of it for me that meant starting
  • 00:20:04
a tick tock to promote my brand and my
  • 00:20:06
    business and that blew up
  • 00:20:07
it also meant obviously my instagram and
  • 00:20:09
    posting there consistently which
  • 00:20:11
that has also blown up i do post on
  • 00:20:13
facebook not so often and not all of my
  • 00:20:15
content because i don't feel like the
  • 00:20:17
same posts that go to instagram can go
  • 00:20:18
to facebook i feel like it's just a very
  • 00:20:20
different audience but i do use facebook
  • 00:20:22
just to make sure i'm reaching kind of
  • 00:20:23
    that more
  • 00:20:24
family and older relatives area of my
  • 00:20:26
life and making sure they're keeping up
  • 00:20:28
with what i'm doing so those are the
  • 00:20:29
    social media platforms i use
  • 00:20:31
we can also talk about email marketing
  • 00:20:32
that's also a really important part of
  • 00:20:34
it email marketing though it seems like
  • 00:20:36
    it's outdated and that
  • 00:20:37
it's not important it's actually really
  • 00:20:39
useful because if social media were
  • 00:20:41
to die one of these days if tick tock
  • 00:20:43
got banned and instagram got banned and
  • 00:20:45
we didn't have any social media left we
  • 00:20:47
could still have our emails because
  • 00:20:48
    that's something that
  • 00:20:49
isn't a social media that could be taken
  • 00:20:51
away if that makes sense so you'll
  • 00:20:53
always have your email list you'll
  • 00:20:54
always have that way to contact people
  • 00:20:56
and also think about it this way social
  • 00:20:58
media only shows your post to like 20 to
  • 00:21:00
30 percent of your following it doesn't
  • 00:21:02
actually put it on everybody's feeds and
  • 00:21:04
same with tick tock it shows it to a
  • 00:21:05
couple people if those couple people
  • 00:21:06
like it goes to the next couple
  • 00:21:08
so it's not like social media shows your
  • 00:21:10
    content to absolutely everybody who's
  • 00:21:12
    following you whereas with email
  • 00:21:13
    marketing
  • 00:21:14
that email goes to absolutely everybody
  • 00:21:16
on that list if you have 10 000 people
  • 00:21:17
on that list it's going to 10
  • 00:21:19
000 people it's not just going to 20
  • 00:21:20
seeing if they open it and then sending
  • 00:21:22
    it out
  • 00:21:22
it's going to all of them so definitely
  • 00:21:24
utilize that as well obviously don't go
  • 00:21:26
overboard nobody likes to get spam
  • 00:21:27
emails all the time but make sure you're
  • 00:21:29
using it so those are the four places
  • 00:21:30
that i kind of market myself
  • 00:21:32
and on top of that i also have a google
  • 00:21:34
my business account so that when people
  • 00:21:35
go to google and they search like
  • 00:21:37
    fashion designer
  • 00:21:38
near me at least in indiana they'll find
  • 00:21:40
me i'm the first one that pops up there
  • 00:21:41
or if they search my name natalia
  • 00:21:43
trevino maro i'm on there and you can
  • 00:21:45
see my google business page and you can
  • 00:21:46
see reviews and all that type of stuff
  • 00:21:48
    that's also really important
  • 00:21:49
obviously as far as marketing so those
  • 00:21:51
are all the ways that i market and
  • 00:21:52
different places where i kind of have
  • 00:21:54
my foot in the door if you will so let's
  • 00:21:56
go into questions that go with this
  • 00:21:57
the first one is what are your marketing
  • 00:21:59
    strategies i honestly like to
  • 00:22:01
be very active on social media and i
  • 00:22:04
like to be in the know of what's going
  • 00:22:05
    on especially
  • 00:22:06
on tick tock per se it's really
  • 00:22:08
important to stay on top of trends using
  • 00:22:10
    trending sounds is so
  • 00:22:12
important that's how my first tick tock
  • 00:22:13
blew up i got a million views in
  • 00:22:15
like two days or something like that and
  • 00:22:17
all of my products got sold out and
  • 00:22:19
    that's kind of how i
  • 00:22:20
started my business i was like a couple
  • 00:22:23
weeks into me starting so that was kind
  • 00:22:25
of me starting with bing and it was
  • 00:22:26
really cool and it was really awesome
  • 00:22:28
but it wasn't a random tick tock that
  • 00:22:29
blew up necessarily i did it with
  • 00:22:31
    intention
  • 00:22:32
because i knew that that sound that i
  • 00:22:33
was using at the time was really really
  • 00:22:35
popular and it was starting to gain a
  • 00:22:36
lot of traction i saw it a lot on my for
  • 00:22:38
you page so i knew it was trending and i
  • 00:22:39
knew that a lot of people
  • 00:22:40
were liking this sound so i decided to
  • 00:22:42
use it and i decided to use it in a way
  • 00:22:44
that i knew would attract people so the
  • 00:22:46
sound that i used kind of just said like
  • 00:22:48
you got it so i was like okay what do i
  • 00:22:50
have that people want so i
  • 00:22:51
talked about being a sustainable brand
  • 00:22:53
    an ethical brand and
  • 00:22:54
    having international shipping and being
  • 00:22:57
relatively affordable and all that type
  • 00:22:58
of stuff which obviously drew people in
  • 00:23:00
and the video itself didn't show my
  • 00:23:02
product so that made people have to go
  • 00:23:04
to my profile click on my website and
  • 00:23:05
then view my product which was all very
  • 00:23:08
very intentional because again i knew
  • 00:23:10
that that had a chance of blowing up
  • 00:23:12
because of the popularity of the sound
  • 00:23:13
and obviously because of my beliefs and
  • 00:23:15
what i was saying i knew that people
  • 00:23:17
would relate to and would like
  • 00:23:18
so it obviously led them to my website
  • 00:23:20
and i got a ridiculous amount of page
  • 00:23:22
    views that night
  • 00:23:23
and obviously so many sales so that's
  • 00:23:25
kind of the strategy on tick tock was
  • 00:23:26
kind of just using trending sounds
  • 00:23:28
making sure to stay on top of it making
  • 00:23:30
    quick
  • 00:23:30
    funny content educational content just
  • 00:23:32
making sure that you're kind of on top
  • 00:23:34
of what's new and trendy because that's
  • 00:23:36
    what's going to get you
  • 00:23:37
maybe viral content as far as instagram
  • 00:23:39
i think it's a little bit more difficult
  • 00:23:40
but here's the thing that i've learned
  • 00:23:41
about instagram or i guess any social
  • 00:23:43
media in general is if you're using new
  • 00:23:45
features that they're providing for you
  • 00:23:47
they're going to push your content more
  • 00:23:48
so what does that mean for instagram
  • 00:23:50
as of right now reels are kind of the
  • 00:23:52
new big thing on instagram right now and
  • 00:23:54
they're really trying to push that so
  • 00:23:55
i decided that it would be a good idea
  • 00:23:57
to put one of my tick tocks that did
  • 00:23:58
really well onto my instagram as a reel
  • 00:24:00
and then just let it be and see what
  • 00:24:02
would happen and as of right now i have
  • 00:24:03
nearly a million views on it which is
  • 00:24:05
    crazy and it's gotten me
  • 00:24:06
7 000 followers in the past three to
  • 00:24:09
    four days which
  • 00:24:10
again is super crazy especially because
  • 00:24:11
    instagram is one of those
  • 00:24:13
platforms that's kind of hard to grow on
  • 00:24:14
organically but i made sure to use
  • 00:24:16
a new feature that they were providing
  • 00:24:18
because they're kind of pushing that
  • 00:24:19
content more and i already knew that
  • 00:24:20
content did really well on my tick tock
  • 00:24:22
so i figured it would do really well on
  • 00:24:24
    instagram too
  • 00:24:24
so i think it's important to just kind
  • 00:24:26
of stay on top of it and make sure you
  • 00:24:28
know what's new and what's trending and
  • 00:24:29
what is popping on social media
  • 00:24:31
that's how you make viral content that
  • 00:24:33
is how people find you and that is the
  • 00:24:34
best strategy i can give you is just to
  • 00:24:36
be in the know keep up with trends and
  • 00:24:38
just keep going the next question is how
  • 00:24:39
did you build such a big following and
  • 00:24:41
obviously the last question kind of
  • 00:24:42
answered in a sense if i've had viral
  • 00:24:44
content which has really helped me but i
  • 00:24:46
also think it's important to be very
  • 00:24:47
    consistent
  • 00:24:48
obviously it's not like everything i
  • 00:24:49
post goes viral i've posted hundreds of
  • 00:24:51
    tick tocks and
  • 00:24:52
not every single one goes viral only one
  • 00:24:54
has actually really gone viral so
  • 00:24:55
it's not like all of my content does
  • 00:24:57
super super well but i'm very consistent
  • 00:24:59
you know and i know that eventually one
  • 00:25:01
    of them will do well
  • 00:25:02
if i keep posting and if i keep trying
  • 00:25:04
and then i'm just persistent on it and
  • 00:25:06
same with instagram i post every single
  • 00:25:07
day on there i make sure to engage with
  • 00:25:09
my audience i make sure to answer to all
  • 00:25:10
of comments i get i answer to dms i make
  • 00:25:13
    sure to follow people back
  • 00:25:14
and engage with their content and just
  • 00:25:16
be a very active member of your
  • 00:25:18
    community
  • 00:25:18
you don't just want to be one of those
  • 00:25:19
people that posts and ghosts so you need
  • 00:25:22
to make sure you're engaging and to do
  • 00:25:23
that you also need to make sure that you
  • 00:25:24
have engaging content and that your
  • 00:25:26
    content is easy to engage
  • 00:25:28
with if you're only promoting your
  • 00:25:29
products all the time kind of hard to
  • 00:25:30
engage with and not everybody's going to
  • 00:25:32
want to be commenting on that so you
  • 00:25:33
want to make sure that aside from
  • 00:25:34
promoting your products you also have
  • 00:25:36
    content that is educational maybe
  • 00:25:38
or something that's a little more
  • 00:25:39
    light-hearted maybe you're telling some
  • 00:25:41
personal stories some fun facts about
  • 00:25:43
yourself just make it more than just
  • 00:25:45
    promoting a product because people
  • 00:25:46
obviously they want to follow your
  • 00:25:48
business and your products and they like
  • 00:25:49
your products and that's why they follow
  • 00:25:51
you but at the same time
  • 00:25:52
they're going to want to follow you more
  • 00:25:53
and buy more from you if they know you
  • 00:25:55
    as a person
  • 00:25:56
and if they see values and they see a
  • 00:25:57
    kind of a more personable
  • 00:25:59
account behind it not just a business
  • 00:26:01
account and make sure that everything
  • 00:26:02
    you put out is very
  • 00:26:03
intentional and that there's a lot of
  • 00:26:05
passion behind what you're doing just a
  • 00:26:06
    thing to keep in mind
  • 00:26:07
    [Applause]
  • 00:26:09
all right let's talk about the website
  • 00:26:11
and how you're gonna host your product
  • 00:26:13
so i personally use squarespace and i
  • 00:26:15
really really love it i think it's a
  • 00:26:16
wonderful platform i love the aesthetic
  • 00:26:18
of it i love how much you can customize
  • 00:26:20
    it
  • 00:26:20
i honestly have not tried shopify or wix
  • 00:26:23
really so i can't say anything on the
  • 00:26:25
other platforms but i think that you
  • 00:26:26
should definitely do your research and
  • 00:26:28
kind of play around with it and see
  • 00:26:29
which one works best for you you also
  • 00:26:31
want to make sure that your website is
  • 00:26:32
user-friendly you want to make sure all
  • 00:26:33
of your information is easy to find you
  • 00:26:35
want to make sure it's easy for people
  • 00:26:36
    to contact you
  • 00:26:37
you want to make sure that all of your
  • 00:26:38
pictures are really clean and crisp you
  • 00:26:41
want to make sure that there's not too
  • 00:26:42
much going on that it's really
  • 00:26:43
    simplistic and
  • 00:26:44
people are able to easily find
  • 00:26:46
everything that they need to find and
  • 00:26:47
all the information is there you want to
  • 00:26:49
make sure all your values are on there
  • 00:26:50
and making sure people really know what
  • 00:26:52
your brand is about because that at
  • 00:26:53
least personally is the first place that
  • 00:26:55
i go to when i go to a new shop's
  • 00:26:56
website i always go to the about or
  • 00:26:58
any sort of like mission statement i
  • 00:26:59
want to make sure that their values
  • 00:27:01
align with my own and that
  • 00:27:03
we meet eye to eye on that and then if
  • 00:27:04
they do then i'll buy from them question
  • 00:27:06
that goes with this one is how did you
  • 00:27:07
make your website and squarespace is
  • 00:27:09
super easy they have a bunch of
  • 00:27:10
templates you can use and then customize
  • 00:27:12
    so
  • 00:27:12
that's how i did mine nothing crazy i
  • 00:27:14
did not have to code it myself and i
  • 00:27:16
don't think you need to either obviously
  • 00:27:18
you can if you want to but that would be
  • 00:27:19
    an extra cost that
  • 00:27:20
is not really necessary there's so many
  • 00:27:23
tutorials online on how to use
  • 00:27:24
    squarespace and customize it and
  • 00:27:26
squarespace help is also just really
  • 00:27:28
    good and
  • 00:27:28
very useful and i use it all the time to
  • 00:27:30
add new features and add-ons and
  • 00:27:31
plug-ins and all that type of stuff so
  • 00:27:33
definitely just do your research play
  • 00:27:34
around with it but it's not that hard
  • 00:27:38
all right next let's talk about
  • 00:27:39
promoting and your launch day so once
  • 00:27:41
you have everything kind of set up and
  • 00:27:43
    you're ready to
  • 00:27:44
start promoting you've got your pictures
  • 00:27:45
of your products which you obviously
  • 00:27:46
want to make sure they're good pictures
  • 00:27:48
    you don't need a professional
  • 00:27:49
photographer by any means but do make
  • 00:27:51
sure that it is high enough quality i
  • 00:27:53
would say it's probably smartest to
  • 00:27:54
actually use a camera and not just your
  • 00:27:55
iphone but if you're going to use your
  • 00:27:56
iphone at least do it in natural
  • 00:27:58
lighting and make sure it's really good
  • 00:27:59
and crisp but yeah you want to start
  • 00:28:00
promoting stuff before you launch i
  • 00:28:02
think it's super important to build up
  • 00:28:03
some sort of hype before you just
  • 00:28:05
launch your product i personally think
  • 00:28:06
that i started promoting my brand maybe
  • 00:28:08
a week or two before i actually launched
  • 00:28:10
sometime around then so that's kind of
  • 00:28:13
the time period i had i was promoting on
  • 00:28:15
my instagram i was promoting on
  • 00:28:17
my tick tock and i was promoting on my
  • 00:28:19
youtube channel because i also did a
  • 00:28:20
series on how i started my business and
  • 00:28:22
just kind of the process so i was
  • 00:28:23
promoting it all around and definitely
  • 00:28:25
    for
  • 00:28:25
quite a few weeks to make sure that i
  • 00:28:27
built some sort of attraction up to my
  • 00:28:28
    launch day
  • 00:28:29
and my launch day honestly went really
  • 00:28:31
well i had a good amount of orders
  • 00:28:32
granted the majority of my orders were
  • 00:28:34
from people that i knew i think i maybe
  • 00:28:36
    got
  • 00:28:36
one or two orders from people i didn't
  • 00:28:38
know which were like the best orders
  • 00:28:39
ever but even though it was just from
  • 00:28:41
people i knew it was still successful
  • 00:28:43
because i still got orders on launch day
  • 00:28:45
and that's not something everybody can
  • 00:28:46
say so i was really content with it
  • 00:28:48
and obviously from there i started
  • 00:28:49
promoting more and eventually my take
  • 00:28:51
dot went viral and that's when
  • 00:28:53
everything kind of sold out and kind of
  • 00:28:54
    gained more traction
  • 00:28:55
it was definitely slow but it was
  • 00:28:57
successful and it worked and here we are
  • 00:28:59
    now so
  • 00:29:00
i don't think that you should get too
  • 00:29:02
worried if your launch day doesn't go
  • 00:29:04
super well or if it takes you a little
  • 00:29:05
bit to kind of gain that traction the
  • 00:29:06
question that goes with this one
  • 00:29:08
is do you do unpaid collaborations or
  • 00:29:11
pr packages and i'm gonna be honest i
  • 00:29:14
have done it before and i have sent
  • 00:29:16
stuff out for free for certain people
  • 00:29:18
but i haven't found that it gives me too
  • 00:29:20
    high of a
  • 00:29:20
return per se at least not for what my
  • 00:29:23
    product's worth
  • 00:29:24
obviously it has allowed me to get at
  • 00:29:25
least pictures of people with my
  • 00:29:27
products on which is really nice and
  • 00:29:28
really helpful because i find that a lot
  • 00:29:30
of people buy from me but not a lot of
  • 00:29:31
people actually send me pictures of them
  • 00:29:33
in my stuff which obviously as a
  • 00:29:34
customer you don't have to do that but
  • 00:29:36
    it's really helpful
  • 00:29:37
obviously when people see other people
  • 00:29:39
actually wearing your stuff and you're
  • 00:29:40
not just saying you sold all these
  • 00:29:41
things but there's actually proof that
  • 00:29:43
    people are actually
  • 00:29:44
buying stuff so i would honestly kind of
  • 00:29:46
    stay away from doing unpaid
  • 00:29:47
    collaborations and
  • 00:29:49
kind of pr packages unless you have a
  • 00:29:51
lot of excess inventory you can give out
  • 00:29:53
but if you're a small business and you
  • 00:29:54
are kind of starting up it's not really
  • 00:29:56
necessary and i don't think you have to
  • 00:29:58
    do that
  • 00:30:00
next let's talk about shipping so you've
  • 00:30:02
launched you've figured out your whole
  • 00:30:03
business now you have all these orders
  • 00:30:05
how are you going to ship them out
  • 00:30:06
there's obviously a lot of different
  • 00:30:07
routes you can take i personally ship
  • 00:30:09
    everything with the usps because
  • 00:30:10
    i find that a it's the cheapest and it's
  • 00:30:13
simple and easy and i didn't feel the
  • 00:30:15
need to have to pay extra for ups or
  • 00:30:16
fedex or any of those but it's totally
  • 00:30:18
up to you so i personally use a website
  • 00:30:20
called pirate ship and that is linked to
  • 00:30:23
my squarespace so all of my orders from
  • 00:30:24
squarespace kind of come into pirate
  • 00:30:26
ship and then i'm able to print my
  • 00:30:27
shipping labels on there like buy them
  • 00:30:29
and print them i use a rolo printer to
  • 00:30:31
print them out and i love it it is a
  • 00:30:33
    thermal printer it is wonderful
  • 00:30:34
great investment probably one of my
  • 00:30:35
better investments and yeah it's super
  • 00:30:37
simple to use that software you just
  • 00:30:39
kind of put in the dimensions of your
  • 00:30:40
    package the weight of it
  • 00:30:41
and then it automatically brings in all
  • 00:30:43
the information from the order so it
  • 00:30:45
    automatically puts in
  • 00:30:46
the address that the person put in for
  • 00:30:47
shipping so you don't have to manually
  • 00:30:49
    put that in or anything
  • 00:30:50
and you can do like a few at a time so
  • 00:30:51
like if 20 people bought two headbands
  • 00:30:53
and you know it's the same weight for
  • 00:30:54
all of them you can buy those all at the
  • 00:30:56
same time and it'll just print all of
  • 00:30:57
them separately which is really nice the
  • 00:30:59
questions that go with this one are
  • 00:31:01
what shipping supplies do you start with
  • 00:31:03
    i personally started with some
  • 00:31:04
    polymailers some tissue paper
  • 00:31:06
some note cards some stickers and a
  • 00:31:08
little weak care card but those are free
  • 00:31:10
from eco and clothes i get all my stuff
  • 00:31:12
from mikko and clothes they are a
  • 00:31:13
    sustainable packaging company
  • 00:31:14
obviously that is also something to keep
  • 00:31:16
in mind what kind of packaging do you
  • 00:31:17
want do you want it to be branded do you
  • 00:31:19
not want to be branded do you care if
  • 00:31:20
    it's sustainable or not there's
  • 00:31:22
obviously a lot that goes into
  • 00:31:23
the packaging as well so you do want to
  • 00:31:25
kind of think on that personally for me
  • 00:31:26
it was super important for it to be
  • 00:31:27
sustainable i didn't really care for it
  • 00:31:29
    to be branded i don't think that's
  • 00:31:30
really important or necessary like yeah
  • 00:31:32
it's super cute if you get a branded
  • 00:31:33
package but at the end of the day that's
  • 00:31:35
just going to go into the trash so i'd
  • 00:31:36
rather it just be a sustainable kind of
  • 00:31:38
way to package things rather than it
  • 00:31:39
    just be
  • 00:31:40
cute and for a picture or whatever you
  • 00:31:41
know so those are the things that i
  • 00:31:43
started with and that's still what i
  • 00:31:44
continue with i don't have anything
  • 00:31:46
extra i just package everything up into
  • 00:31:48
    the tissue paper
  • 00:31:49
and use the sticker to seal it up and
  • 00:31:51
then i put it into the polymailer and i
  • 00:31:53
use the little note cards to write a
  • 00:31:54
    note on
  • 00:31:55
and call it a day that's pretty much it
  • 00:31:57
the other question is how did you set up
  • 00:31:58
    worldwide shipping was squarespace
  • 00:32:00
friendly with that and to be honest it
  • 00:32:02
was kind of difficult to set up
  • 00:32:03
    not difficult but a time-consuming i
  • 00:32:05
would say i had to go to usps.com and
  • 00:32:07
just kind of manually put in like say
  • 00:32:09
    i'm going to be shipping
  • 00:32:10
this package of these dimensions and
  • 00:32:12
this weight to australia and see how
  • 00:32:14
    much it would cost
  • 00:32:15
and then put in a different way to the
  • 00:32:17
same place and see how much it would
  • 00:32:18
cost so then i made a list of countries
  • 00:32:19
and how much it would cost me for each
  • 00:32:21
one and then i was able to kind of
  • 00:32:22
    generalize them so
  • 00:32:24
a lot of europe was kind of the same
  • 00:32:26
    pricing like western europe had
  • 00:32:28
the same pricing but eastern europe kind
  • 00:32:29
of had the same pricing and then places
  • 00:32:31
like australia and new zealand had the
  • 00:32:32
    same pricing and
  • 00:32:34
other parts of asia and then south
  • 00:32:35
america has different pricing and then
  • 00:32:37
canada and mexico are kind of similar
  • 00:32:39
pricing so i was able to kind of group
  • 00:32:40
    them
  • 00:32:40
by pricing but you do have to manually
  • 00:32:42
put in like the countries the pricing
  • 00:32:44
per weight so i also had to figure out
  • 00:32:46
for weight how much it would cost and
  • 00:32:48
what that increase is but once you do it
  • 00:32:50
for one you can kind of figure out the
  • 00:32:51
rest a lot easier once you kind of get
  • 00:32:53
in the hang of it i hope that made sense
  • 00:32:54
it's kind of difficult to figure out
  • 00:32:56
but i think it's worth it a lot of
  • 00:32:58
people really appreciate the fact that i

have worldwide shipping that i'm able to
  • 00:33:01
be inclusive in that way so
  • 00:33:02
if that's something you're looking into
  • 00:33:04
it does take a little bit but i think
  • 00:33:05
    it's worth it
  • 00:33:08
the last step of your business and
  • 00:33:10
starting your business is just analyzing
  • 00:33:12
things now that you've put out your
  • 00:33:13
business now that you've launched and
  • 00:33:15
you're shipping stuff out and all that
  • 00:33:17
stuff you need to start analyzing and
  • 00:33:19
you need to start getting feedback from
  • 00:33:21
    people
  • 00:33:21
ask your customers if they're liking it
  • 00:33:23
ask people to leave reviews see how you
  • 00:33:25
can improve there's always ways we can
  • 00:33:26
    improve
  • 00:33:27
i'm always improving my social media
  • 00:33:29
from when i started to how it is right
  • 00:33:30
    now
  • 00:33:31
has improved so much in the quality in
  • 00:33:33
my content and what i'm posting and even
  • 00:33:35
my website has improved so much from the
  • 00:33:37
very start of how i started it to where
  • 00:33:39
it is right now i've added so much more
  • 00:33:40
    information i've made it hopefully
  • 00:33:42
easier to manage and i'm still
  • 00:33:43
    constantly changing it constantly making
  • 00:33:45
sure to improve things it's super
  • 00:33:46
    important that you
  • 00:33:48
are open to constant change and constant
  • 00:33:50
growth because that is just something
  • 00:33:52
that i've seen that comes naturally with
  • 00:33:54
having a business and being an
  • 00:33:55
    entrepreneur is just you're constantly
  • 00:33:57
    growing you're constantly learning
  • 00:33:58
    there's
  • 00:33:58
it doesn't ever stop and i think that's
  • 00:34:00
the beauty of it i think it's super fun
  • 00:34:01
and really cool to constantly be
  • 00:34:02
learning and growing but it's definitely
  • 00:34:04
something you have to be open to you
  • 00:34:05
can't stay stagnant in one spot forever
  • 00:34:08
so lastly i have a few other
  • 00:34:09
questions that i didn't know where to
  • 00:34:11
put into this video but i did want to
  • 00:34:12
make sure that i answered them so i'm
  • 00:34:14
gonna do a quick little q a right now
  • 00:34:15
first question is how do you stay
  • 00:34:17
    motivated considering i do everything
  • 00:34:18
myself it is difficult to stay motivated
  • 00:34:20
but it's a lot easier for me
  • 00:34:22
to have that motivation when i know that
  • 00:34:24
    the stuff i'm making
  • 00:34:25
is going to a certain person in a
  • 00:34:27
certain place since i make everything to
  • 00:34:28
order i'm not just making random
  • 00:34:30
inventory and hoping that it sells it's
  • 00:34:32
like i'm making this t-shirt right now
  • 00:34:34
that i know i'm going to package up and
  • 00:34:35
    ship to australia to
  • 00:34:37
said person and i think that's really
  • 00:34:39
cool and that is something that
  • 00:34:40
motivates me kind of seeing that end
  • 00:34:41
goal and seeing that there are people on
  • 00:34:43
the other side of what i'm doing every
  • 00:34:44
single day is what keeps me the most
  • 00:34:46
    motivated if i didn't have that i don't
  • 00:34:48
know if i could get up in the mornings
  • 00:34:49
every single day because it is a lot of
  • 00:34:51
willpower to kind of get yourself up and
  • 00:34:53
moving every day but having people and
  • 00:34:55
having you guys as a support system and
  • 00:34:56
kind of doing it for somebody is really
  • 00:34:58
what motivates me the most the second
  • 00:35:00
question is time management and how i
  • 00:35:02
    schedule my workflow
  • 00:35:03
i just personally am really good at time
  • 00:35:05
    management it's something that i've
  • 00:35:07
    always
  • 00:35:07
been good at just because i'm kind of a
  • 00:35:10
perfectionist with a lot of things and i
  • 00:35:12
hate to procrastinate i like to get
  • 00:35:13
    things done
  • 00:35:14
asap it's something that i get from my
  • 00:35:16
    mom she's the same way
  • 00:35:17
so that's just the way i've been but the
  • 00:35:19
way that i keep it all organized is just
  • 00:35:21
    to-do lists i don't have anything fancy
  • 00:35:23
    where i write down to-do-list i just
  • 00:35:25
have a notebook and i write everything i
  • 00:35:26
need to do whether it be for a week or
  • 00:35:28
    for the day
  • 00:35:28
or whatever i write it all down to make
  • 00:35:30
sure that i can start checking things
  • 00:35:31
off i find it super satisfying to
  • 00:35:33
    actually physically check
  • 00:35:34
stuff off a list and see how much i've
  • 00:35:36
done it really helps me stay motivated
  • 00:35:38
and feel like i'm actually progressing
  • 00:35:40
    even if it's like
  • 00:35:41
very small tasks i still write them down
  • 00:35:42
so if i am making a t-shirt i'm not just
  • 00:35:44
    gonna write
  • 00:35:45
make t-shirt i'm gonna write cut it out
  • 00:35:47
    embroider it sew it
  • 00:35:48
ship it so that i can start taking it
  • 00:35:50
off the list a little bit faster
  • 00:35:52
and have more things that i feel like
  • 00:35:53
i've accomplished it really helps me and
  • 00:35:55
    i know that's a very
  • 00:35:56
just psychological thing but it helps so
  • 00:35:58
if it helps you too then do it i think
  • 00:35:59
it's really good to do lists are my best
  • 00:36:01
friend that is how i manage
  • 00:36:03
everything the next question is just
  • 00:36:04
about legal stuff and registering my
  • 00:36:06
business i personally registered as a
  • 00:36:08
sole proprietor and i did not register
  • 00:36:10
right away i registered i believe in
  • 00:36:12
    october if not late september
  • 00:36:14
and i just did a lot of research on it
  • 00:36:17
my dad and i sat down for a while to
  • 00:36:18
just kind of look into it and i ended up
  • 00:36:20
hiring legalzoom to do it all for me
  • 00:36:22
because my dad and i went to do it on
  • 00:36:24
our own and it just became really
  • 00:36:25
complicated and we weren't sure how to
  • 00:36:27
do it properly and because it is such an
  • 00:36:29
important legal document i didn't want
  • 00:36:31
to mess it up and risk
  • 00:36:32
being in any sort of legal trouble so i
  • 00:36:34
just went ahead and paid for somebody to
  • 00:36:36
    do it for me because
  • 00:36:37
there are professionals for a reason so
  • 00:36:39
i just went ahead and did that and made
  • 00:36:40
sure that they kind of did it for me and
  • 00:36:42
had that all properly set up so i don't
  • 00:36:44
have to worry about it the next question
  • 00:36:45
is just talking about dealing with hate
  • 00:36:47
    and negativity and
  • 00:36:48
people not being supportive stuff like
  • 00:36:50
that i personally had a really good
  • 00:36:51
    support system
  • 00:36:52
i feel like i generally have people
  • 00:36:54
around me who support everything i do
  • 00:36:56
but that doesn't mean that everybody
  • 00:36:58
believes in you i think there's a very
  • 00:37:00
    big difference between people supporting
  • 00:37:01
you and people believing in you because
  • 00:37:03
obviously you can support somebody but
  • 00:37:05
    think that they're gonna fail
  • 00:37:06
you know what i mean i think a lot of
  • 00:37:08
people backed me up and they you know
  • 00:37:10
pushed me they're like yeah you got this
  • 00:37:11
but in their head they're like she does
  • 00:37:13
not got this she is going to fail she
  • 00:37:15
    needs a plan b
  • 00:37:16
she needs to go back to school whatever
  • 00:37:17
it may be i dealt with a lot of people
  • 00:37:19
you know asking me what my plan b was
  • 00:37:21
and asking me if i was gonna go back to
  • 00:37:22
school and if i was planning on getting
  • 00:37:24
a job and honestly it's not very easy to
  • 00:37:26
deal with it is very difficult and it is
  • 00:37:28
totally a mind game of you
  • 00:37:30
just locking those people out and not
  • 00:37:32
    thinking about it and just
  • 00:37:33
letting yourself be in your own thoughts
  • 00:37:35
and letting yourself believe that you
  • 00:37:37
got this because at the end of the day
  • 00:37:39
you just need to believe in yourself and
  • 00:37:40
if you believe in yourself and you give
  • 00:37:42
    yourself positive affirmation some
  • 00:37:44
    positive energy
  • 00:37:44
and all of that then you're gonna be
  • 00:37:47
good to go the only thing that matters
  • 00:37:48
is that you believe in yourself and
  • 00:37:49
    you're giving yourself positive
  • 00:37:51
affirmations and that you are truly
  • 00:37:52
motivating yourself to get to where you
  • 00:37:54
want to be and you believe that fully
  • 00:37:56
because i think that the law of
  • 00:37:57
attraction is very real and i think that
  • 00:37:59
manifestation is really real the more
  • 00:38:00
good energy you put out the more good
  • 00:38:02
energy is going to come right back to
  • 00:38:03
    you so if you're
  • 00:38:04
    really doubting yourself and not
  • 00:38:06
believing in yourself and kind of being
  • 00:38:07
    insecure about your business
  • 00:38:08
then you're kind of putting that
  • 00:38:09
negativity towards yourself you need to
  • 00:38:11
honestly just believe in yourself even
  • 00:38:12
if you're scared about it i'm not going
  • 00:38:13
to say i'm like super confident about
  • 00:38:15
everything i do i'm definitely not but i
  • 00:38:16
    do have to kind of
  • 00:38:18
put up that front for myself and tell
  • 00:38:19
myself because if i don't nobody else
  • 00:38:21
    will and
  • 00:38:22
if i don't do it for myself nobody's
  • 00:38:23
gonna do it for me and it's not gonna do
  • 00:38:25
well so i'm not gonna sit here and say
  • 00:38:26
    it's easy but
  • 00:38:27
uh it's definitely possible and you can
  • 00:38:29
definitely get through it just gotta
  • 00:38:31
block it out always block out the haters
  • 00:38:32
so that is it for today's video i hope
  • 00:38:34
    you guys
  • 00:38:34
liked it and i hope that it was really
  • 00:38:36
helpful for you i do get a lot of
  • 00:38:37
questions about this all the time so
  • 00:38:39
i've been really wanting to make this
  • 00:38:40
video and hopefully putting all that
  • 00:38:41
information in a place where you can
  • 00:38:43
find it easily let me know if you guys
  • 00:38:44
have any other questions or if you guys
  • 00:38:46
have any fun little business things that
  • 00:38:48
you'd like to add in things that have
  • 00:38:49
worked for you or it didn't work for you
  • 00:38:50
let's just like talk about them down
  • 00:38:51
below and just share your stories and
  • 00:38:53
share your experiences because i think
  • 00:38:54
that the best way to learn is just
  • 00:38:56
    through each other and
  • 00:38:57
through our own experiences anyway this
  • 00:38:59
wouldn't be a good business video if i
  • 00:39:01
didn't promote myself so feel free to
