- 00:00:00I don't think people really realize how
- 00:00:01many hours you need to to really learn a
- 00:00:05language you think that well okay I'm
- 00:00:08going to just do 15 minutes of this
- 00:00:10every day and well I'm pretty consistent
- 00:00:12right so it should be okay well it's a
- 00:00:14lot of input like immersion you're
- 00:00:16always listening and reading in Japanese
- 00:00:18or whatever language you're learning and
- 00:00:20then you do Ani and if I remember
- 00:00:22correctly that's pretty much the only
- 00:00:23two things I mean immersion in the sense
- 00:00:25of a lot of input and then you do
- 00:00:27everything in Japanese you know you eat
- 00:00:29cake with chopsticks and all all of
- 00:00:31these things I don't want to be the guy
- 00:00:33that just talks about language learning
- 00:00:35I actually want to show people that well
- 00:00:37I apply this advice and you know it
- 00:00:43works Lis what's up man how you doing
- 00:00:47how's life is it Grand is life grand for
- 00:00:49you at the moment well it is Grand
- 00:00:52actually so you know as far as language
- 00:00:54learning I'm still you know doing my
- 00:00:56stuff doing a lot of sort of passive
- 00:00:59learning you know I'll talk more about
- 00:01:01this but I don't have as much time as I
- 00:01:03would want to to do you know Active
- 00:01:05Learning actually sitting down and doing
- 00:01:08activities so I you know I do a lot of
- 00:01:10passive learning just listening or stuff
- 00:01:12on the go and um I'm thinking of doing a
- 00:01:16project that you know learning a
- 00:01:18language and sort of documenting it for
- 00:01:21for YouTube uh I don't want to talk too
- 00:01:23much about this because it's not 100%
- 00:01:26I'm not 100% sure of what language I'm
- 00:01:28going to choose and what format it's
- 00:01:30going to take but yeah so well listen
- 00:01:33good that's that's exactly where I want
- 00:01:34to dig in and so give us just a little
- 00:01:36bit of a a short background into how
- 00:01:39you're so obsessed with language
- 00:01:41learning like me and uh how it's it
- 00:01:43encompasses such a great part of your
- 00:01:45your life give me give me that
- 00:01:46background real
- 00:01:47quick well so I was born and raised in
- 00:01:51in Tahiti and French poesia right so
- 00:01:53it's very much uh pretty much
- 00:01:55monolingual uh country we all speak
- 00:01:57French some people speak tahan but I'm
- 00:02:00not ethnically Tian so I don't speak any
- 00:02:03tahan I grew up just speaking French and
- 00:02:06just like any kid going through the the
- 00:02:09French school system I studied I started
- 00:02:12studying English in probably at the age
- 00:02:15of 11 or 12 so I did this for about
- 00:02:18seven years and uh at the end of high
- 00:02:20school I studied prettyy hard and I had
- 00:02:22good grades I would say for written
- 00:02:24comprehension writing English and stuff
- 00:02:27but then I went to Switzerland you know
- 00:02:30in the french- speaking part and I did
- 00:02:32meet some you know English speakers
- 00:02:35there and I remember one particular
- 00:02:37event that was in the train I was going
- 00:02:40from the city where I was studying in so
- 00:02:42loan it's in the French speaking part
- 00:02:44not a very big city and I went to I
- 00:02:47think I was going to the Geneva airport
- 00:02:49and there was a guy an Irish guy in
- 00:02:51front of me and he had this friend from
- 00:02:55London I think he had this very you know
- 00:02:57Posh accent I think as far as I can can
- 00:03:00remember he went to Imperial College of
- 00:03:02London or
- 00:03:03something and they were having a
- 00:03:05discussion and sometimes they were
- 00:03:07asking me questions and I mean I could
- 00:03:09not understand what the British guy was
- 00:03:12saying and so I thought man this is this
- 00:03:14is such a shame cuz I've been studying
- 00:03:16English for seven years and uh I can't I
- 00:03:18just can't have a basic conversation
- 00:03:21with a native speaker right maybe with
- 00:03:23Americans it would be a little bit
- 00:03:25easier cuz I'm I was more used to the
- 00:03:26accent but so at this point I decided
- 00:03:30okay I need to do something about it cuz
- 00:03:32I mean it's not just for hobbies right
- 00:03:33English it's just if you're a software
- 00:03:35developer like me it's just uh you need
- 00:03:37to use English all the
- 00:03:39time so I decided to take things
- 00:03:42seriously and at first I think I didn't
- 00:03:44really have a method for learning
- 00:03:47languages so it was very much just uh
- 00:03:49you know do whatever and so English took
- 00:03:52me a long time to acquire but then I
- 00:03:54went on to I think it was the end of my
- 00:03:57freshman year I had um you know summer
- 00:04:01break of about 3 months I don't know why
- 00:04:04it was so long but and I thought you
- 00:04:06know it was so intense the first year in
- 00:04:08Switzerland studying there and I did the
- 00:04:10exams and then the three 3mon summer
- 00:04:13break I was like okay what I need to do
- 00:04:15something useful in my life so I thought
- 00:04:17well 3 months you know I can learn a
- 00:04:19language actually but probably not a
- 00:04:22very hard language I mean it's not a lot
- 00:04:24of time and of course you know thinking
- 00:04:27back I think it's a little bit naive to
- 00:04:29think that in three months you're going
- 00:04:30to be fluent in a language even though
- 00:04:33even if it's very easy then you know
- 00:04:35it's not really
- 00:04:36realistic and so I thought okay the
- 00:04:39easiest language I can pick up probably
- 00:04:41is Italian and there are lots of Italian
- 00:04:43speakers where I lived and so I started
- 00:04:47I started learning Italian I did not
- 00:04:49know what I was doing and so I started
- 00:04:51with Asim I'm sure I think we mentioned
- 00:04:54as in in our interview for sure um you
- 00:04:57know looking back I I think it's good
- 00:04:59you know I think it's good it's not it's
- 00:05:01not the best but it got me going and I
- 00:05:03did Asim
- 00:05:05Italian I think there are two levels so
- 00:05:07maybe from A1 to B1 and then B1 to C1 I
- 00:05:11mean obviously I was not C1 at the end
- 00:05:13but I think in a span of about 10 months
- 00:05:15I was able to have conversations with
- 00:05:18Italian speakers and so this set the
- 00:05:20whole thing in motion of you know
- 00:05:23language learning and then with my
- 00:05:25success with Italian I thought hey you
- 00:05:26know I think I'm I'm okay at learning
- 00:05:28languages and so now I'm I'm going to
- 00:05:30take on a harder language and so I it
- 00:05:34just so happened that it was probably my
- 00:05:36second year at the end I was watching a
- 00:05:37movie again summer break and I remember
- 00:05:40it very well it was Kill Bill by
- 00:05:43Tarantino and so a lot of it happens in
- 00:05:46Japan and I thought man this is so cool
- 00:05:48so I'm going to learn Japanese and I
- 00:05:50think in 10 months that's it I'm I'm
- 00:05:53going to have I'm going to be fluent and
- 00:05:55so well I mean I'm still learning
- 00:05:57Japanese so it's it's a lot harder than
- 00:06:00than Italian so yeah for sure I mean
- 00:06:03it's it's hilarious you know there's
- 00:06:05always that what I found in in great
- 00:06:07Learners and great language Learners is
- 00:06:09that they that that desire that spark
- 00:06:10it's something like it'll just hit you
- 00:06:12you know uh I had mine from a book you
- 00:06:14know kman Christo watching this guy just
- 00:06:16like be able to do all that you know you
- 00:06:18watch Kill Bill you see these people
- 00:06:19speaking Japanese you fall in love with
- 00:06:21it in one second and then you devote
- 00:06:23just a absurd amount of time to learn a
- 00:06:25language right and so I think language
- 00:06:27Learners have to remember that if they
- 00:06:29don't act from that I mean it would be
- 00:06:31ridiculous for if you having that
- 00:06:33feeling and that that you know that
- 00:06:35desire and then we go and force you you
- 00:06:37know to learn German for some that
- 00:06:39you're you're going to be struggling to
- 00:06:40do all those the the obstacles that
- 00:06:43you're going to hit and that you hit
- 00:06:44through learning you get through with
- 00:06:46that desire and that passion and so you
- 00:06:49said that you started without a method
- 00:06:51surely you've refined yourself and I
- 00:06:52know we both appreciate aimil you know
- 00:06:54and say it could be something that could
- 00:06:55be involved in this but if you could get
- 00:06:58us to a more refined area of some things
- 00:07:01and I've got some questions after that
- 00:07:03but what would you how would you
- 00:07:04approach language learning today if we
- 00:07:06did then say just hey you got to learn
- 00:07:08German right so I just want to first uh
- 00:07:11React to what you said about you know if
- 00:07:13you had to learn German but it's not it
- 00:07:15doesn't come from any passion or
- 00:07:16whatever I mean I always think that the
- 00:07:19hardest language to learn is the one
- 00:07:21that you don't want to learn I mean is
- 00:07:23just really hard but to your question so
- 00:07:26so it's funny because so you're asking
- 00:07:27me essentially if I had to learn learn a
- 00:07:30new language what would I do right yeah
- 00:07:34yeah so I've been thinking about this
- 00:07:36for the past few weeks because you know
- 00:07:38I
- 00:07:39do I am thinking of learning a new
- 00:07:41language and it is a bit problematic
- 00:07:44because it's not something I'm going to
- 00:07:47do because I love the language I want to
- 00:07:49do it because you know I well obviously
- 00:07:52I think a lot of people have watch some
- 00:07:54of my videos I have a YouTube channel
- 00:07:56but I think I've been talking a lot
- 00:07:59about language learning and you know
- 00:08:01interviewing you know researchers in
- 00:08:03these in these fields but it's very
- 00:08:05abstract right it's just I don't want to
- 00:08:07be the guy that just talks about
- 00:08:09language learning I actually want to
- 00:08:11show people that well I apply this
- 00:08:13advice and you know it works is your
- 00:08:16brain productivity awful well you need
- 00:08:30as a pro footballer I'm always looking
- 00:08:32to improve my focus my problem solving

- 00:09:16a tough thing so check out the link

- 00:09:29[Music]
- 00:09:34so here is how I would go about it I
- 00:09:37think generally speaking I sort of take
- 00:09:40the approach that Professor Paul Nation
- 00:09:43would take I had him on my
- 00:09:46podcast and so there are four components
- 00:09:48that I would really look at four types
- 00:09:50of activities so the four types of
- 00:09:52activities first would be well how do
- 00:09:55you learn a language through listening
- 00:09:58so that would be the first components
- 00:10:00then the second component would be
- 00:10:02writing and speaking and sorry I think
- 00:10:05the first component I said listening but
- 00:10:06it's also listening and reading so it's
- 00:10:09input output the third component would
- 00:10:12be how do I learn a language through
- 00:10:14deliberate learning activities so this
- 00:10:17is I can talk about this but this is
- 00:10:19stuff like well actually learning the
- 00:10:21grammar doing doing for flashcards and
- 00:10:23so on and the fourth category would be
- 00:10:25fluency development I think this is a
- 00:10:28bit obscure for people people but
- 00:10:29essentially this is how do you take what
- 00:10:31you already know and get really good
- 00:10:34with it so for example I think the most
- 00:10:36important component of fluency
- 00:10:39development and fluency here I don't
- 00:10:40mean like proficiency I mean that okay
- 00:10:43you can I can have a conversation with a
- 00:10:46native speaker but can you have a group
- 00:10:49conversation with some background noise
- 00:10:51and things are going really fast right
- 00:10:53so this is really like you're fluent you
- 00:10:55have fluent listening so these are the
- 00:10:56four components and specifically in my
- 00:10:59Cas what I'm going to do with the new
- 00:11:00language I'm going to learn I already
- 00:11:02know more or less which language it's
- 00:11:04going to be but I don't want to you know
- 00:11:06spoil it for people I I think the goal
- 00:11:08for most people listening to us they're
- 00:11:10not necessarily learning for work
- 00:11:12they're learning because they want to
- 00:11:14visit the country because they want to
- 00:11:16talk with
- 00:11:17people so the goal is very much to talk
- 00:11:20with people so I'm going to focus on
- 00:11:22this instead of focusing on you know
- 00:11:24reading and writing I think these are
- 00:11:26extreme extremely beneficial and you
- 00:11:28know the benefits of reading a book for
- 00:11:31example doing extensive reading or
- 00:11:32intensive reading it just goes Way
- 00:11:35Beyond just your your ability to read
- 00:11:38but if I want to be more targeted and
- 00:11:40really learn a language in a sort of
- 00:11:42restricted span of time then I'm going
- 00:11:44to be focusing on listening and
- 00:11:47speaking so this is the the overall
- 00:11:49framework but concretely what I would do
- 00:11:52is for listening for example I'm not
- 00:11:54going to tell all the activities for
- 00:11:56listening obviously this is going to be
- 00:11:58a lot of comprehensive ible input
- 00:11:59there's nothing too uh sexy or anything
- 00:12:02here just get a lot of content that I'm
- 00:12:05interested in and that is at about my
- 00:12:07level or a little bit above so that's
- 00:12:10for the listening which I think in my
- 00:12:12opinion I mean I don't know about you
- 00:12:13but like when I learn in language it's
- 00:12:16always seems to be the the sort of the
- 00:12:19bottleneck because when you learn how to
- 00:12:21speak then you know when you're in front
- 00:12:24of someone and you have to talk then you
- 00:12:26can use avoidance strategies when you
- 00:12:28don't know a word can sort of bypass it
- 00:12:30and but with
- 00:12:32listening you can't just ask the person
- 00:12:34to just repeat multiple times and and
- 00:12:36stuff like that so yeah this is the
- 00:12:39limiting factor to me and then speaking
- 00:12:42what I would do for example is an
- 00:12:44activity that I know it may sound a
- 00:12:45little bit controversial but this is an
- 00:12:48activity from Paul Nation so stuff like
- 00:12:51just memorized sentences or memorized
- 00:12:54speeches which is just you know just you
- 00:12:57memorize sentences or speeches and I
- 00:12:59know that now in the language learning
- 00:13:02world there's sort of this thing about
- 00:13:04you know you shouldn't learn things and
- 00:13:06it should be acquired and I'm not you
- 00:13:09know I'm not really sure about this I've
- 00:13:10had good results with this just
- 00:13:13memorizing stuff and obviously you're
- 00:13:14not going to to produce the sentences or
- 00:13:18the speeches exactly how you learn them
- 00:13:20but I really found that these I memorize
- 00:13:24the these uh things in the long term and
- 00:13:26I can reuse them even single words in in
- 00:13:30um in the future and so so I gave you an
- 00:13:33activity for input so listening an
- 00:13:35activity for speaking now for fluency
- 00:13:39development I'm not really going to
- 00:13:42focus too much on fluency development if
- 00:13:45I'm going to you know learn a language
- 00:13:46in a very restricted sort of span of
- 00:13:48time
- 00:13:49because apart from listening you know
- 00:13:52listening is really important but it's
- 00:13:54not really too important to me that like
- 00:13:57I'm I'm speaking in a language and I
- 00:13:59sort of I pause and I have to think and
- 00:14:02you know go fetch the words I think it's
- 00:14:04okay as as long as you get your point
- 00:14:06across if you're just taking three
- 00:14:08months or six months to learn a language
- 00:14:12you can just you know put this on the
- 00:14:14back burner and then the last category
- 00:14:16would be the deliberate learning
- 00:14:18activities which I think is really
- 00:14:20important because it's not necessary but
- 00:14:22you can definitely you know it's a bit
- 00:14:25of a shortcut at least or you can you
- 00:14:28know really boost your learning using
- 00:14:29deliberate learning activities and
- 00:14:31obviously people watching my videos they
- 00:14:33know that I've created the the eny cord
- 00:14:36decks which are you know flashcard
- 00:14:37packages for ankey so when I'm going to
- 00:14:40learn this new language I will be using
- 00:14:43an ankey deck that I created for
- 00:14:46learning vocabulary so these are
- 00:14:48sentence cards um and you know obviously
- 00:14:51people don't need to get my anore decks
- 00:14:53there are plenty of decks out there that
- 00:14:55are pre-made and you know pretty uh good
- 00:14:57quality but yeah would do uh flash cards
- 00:15:00because just quoting Professor Paul
- 00:15:02Nation here this is one of the highest
- 00:15:04like the evidence is so great in favor
- 00:15:06of flash cards a word cards or sentence
- 00:15:08cards it's just uh it's a no-brainer so
- 00:15:12yeah there you go yeah I I I want to
- 00:15:15touch on the the obviously between
- 00:15:18memory rote memory using rot memory and
- 00:15:21acquiring I think it's very it's
- 00:15:22fascinating what the kickback on that is
- 00:15:24I think it's probably because everyone
- 00:15:27did not get any of the acquiring within
- 00:15:30the traditional method in school and so
- 00:15:32people are discovering and it's becoming
- 00:15:33like like what do you mean like I can
- 00:15:35actually do this and so you now you have
- 00:15:37this massive as in all things basically
- 00:15:39pretty much in life uh somewhere between
- 00:15:42balancing doing a balancing act between
- 00:15:44these two is going to be generally if we
- 00:15:46put a if we put it across the average
- 00:15:49useful right because I can remember in
- 00:15:51some of my early learning days what I
- 00:15:53would do is I would memorize phrases I
- 00:15:55would memorize a few phrases not because
- 00:15:59I you know thought that this is how I
- 00:16:00would learn the language it was because
- 00:16:03I wanted to be able to use those in a
- 00:16:06situation and get back some input and
- 00:16:09it's also controlled input I realize
- 00:16:11that if I ask you where is the bathroom
- 00:16:13you're not going to start talking about
- 00:16:14the TV show you you just watched right
- 00:16:16it's very I'm going to hear left I'm
- 00:16:18going to hear right I'm going to hear
- 00:16:19straight you know and so that was one of
- 00:16:22the the that's one thing that I still
- 00:16:23actually recommend in is is is to learn
- 00:16:26these things in order to get a a focus
- 00:16:29place for your input and so you know all
- 00:16:32of this being said I'm curious now do
- 00:16:34you have a do you have a grasp of what
- 00:16:36would
- 00:16:37be let's say the biggest mistake or
- 00:16:40mistakes either that you've made or that
- 00:16:42you constantly see coming up I mean
- 00:16:45because you've had lots of excellent
- 00:16:46conversations and everybody here who
- 00:16:48hasn't met or or sorry who haven't
- 00:16:50hasn't seen Le's Channel please go check
- 00:16:53it out because there's just a massive
- 00:16:54wealth of of information there but what
- 00:16:57would you say if you could choose
- 00:16:59some of the biggest mistakes that are
- 00:17:00being done right in terms of what people
- 00:17:03are doing to learn languages it's hard
- 00:17:05for me to say because I don't personally
- 00:17:08know a lot of language learners but at
- 00:17:10the same time there are two things that
- 00:17:12come come to mind first of all and I
- 00:17:14think this is mostly due to you know the
- 00:17:16internet I mean people just watch the
- 00:17:19videos and it doesn't really help that
- 00:17:23um I think in this whole language
- 00:17:24learning world there's this whole thing
- 00:17:26about you know learn a language fast
- 00:17:29and uh it's always about learn a
- 00:17:31language in 3 months and in six months
- 00:17:34and look I'm guilty of this because you
- 00:17:36need to get some views but at the end at
- 00:17:39the end of the day
- 00:17:40like um I don't think people really
- 00:17:43realize how many hours you need to to
- 00:17:47really learn a language so that would be
- 00:17:50the first mistake just you know you
- 00:17:51think that well okay I'm going to just
- 00:17:53do 15 minutes of this every day and well
- 00:17:56I'm pretty consistent right so it should
- 00:17:58be okay well you know if you really like
- 00:18:01especially for an English speaker and
- 00:18:02you're learning a language that is I
- 00:18:04don't know Spanish is easy Slavic
- 00:18:07languages actually I'm not really sure
- 00:18:09how they how difficult they are quite
- 00:18:11diff for the English yeah for The
- 00:18:12American or in English yeah there's
- 00:18:14nothing we have to Peg you know the
- 00:18:17words don't seem good is Doo right and
- 00:18:20good in in German you know good you know
- 00:18:23it's like right okay I get that the
- 00:18:26other one I can't you know so and I mean
- 00:18:28even for quote unquote easy languages
- 00:18:31what um you know there's a
- 00:18:33classification the the FSI the Foreign
- 00:18:35Service Institute says that French and
- 00:18:38Italian and Spanish these are easy
- 00:18:40languages but even the easy languages
- 00:18:43you need hundreds of hours to really
- 00:18:46have conversations I'm not even talking
- 00:18:48about you know being like native level
- 00:18:50like for example you're Italian I mean
- 00:18:52you know you've been through it and you
- 00:18:54have a very good level in Italian not
- 00:18:56just the pronunciation but just you know
- 00:18:58listening comprehension and speaking it
- 00:19:01takes hundreds of hours to really get
- 00:19:03there and so I mean that's it and people
- 00:19:05think that just by using an app 15
- 00:19:07minutes a day or I think even most
- 00:19:09people do like 30 minutes every now and
- 00:19:11then it's not even a daily thing it's
- 00:19:13that's so true that's true it's just I
- 00:19:15mean it's it's okay but it's going to
- 00:19:17take years if not decades so that would
- 00:19:20be the first mistake then the second
- 00:19:22mistake sort of is just to to mention
- 00:19:24what you mentioned is that there's this
- 00:19:26whole thing now and you know I've I've
- 00:19:29definitely been in this Camp I think
- 00:19:31I've listened to your interview with
- 00:19:32Matt versus Japan and who was it Steve
- 00:19:37Kaufman I think the message that they
- 00:19:41convey is is positive but at the same
- 00:19:45time it's a little bit especially in
- 00:19:47Steve's case you know it's a little bit
- 00:19:49uh extreme it's pretty much if I
- 00:19:51remember correctly with uh Steve's
- 00:19:53videos which I watch every now and then
- 00:19:56it's pretty much all about well you know
- 00:19:58just do a lot reading and do a lot of
- 00:20:00listening I mean a lot of input right
- 00:20:02with Matt versus Japan it's not as you
- 00:20:05know I I think the original sort of ajat
- 00:20:07method that he talks
- 00:20:09about it's a lot of input like immersion
- 00:20:11you're always listening and reading in
- 00:20:13Japanese or whatever language you're
- 00:20:15you're learning and then you do Ani and
- 00:20:17if I remember correctly that's pretty
- 00:20:19much the only two things I mean
- 00:20:20immersion in the sense of a lot of input
- 00:20:22and then you do everything in Japanese
- 00:20:24you know you eat cake with chopsticks
- 00:20:26and all all of these things and I think
- 00:20:28it's good you get a lot of input but
- 00:20:30then you know people are really missing
- 00:20:32out on the deliberate learning
- 00:20:34activities and there are plenty of other
- 00:20:35things that you can do to learn
- 00:20:38languages that are really going to speed
- 00:20:40up the process I interviewed Dr Norbert
- 00:20:42Schmidt on my channel who is the well
- 00:20:46actually you know I've interviewed the
- 00:20:47the biggest uh vocabulary people on my
- 00:20:49channel so the three like the Holy
- 00:20:51Trinity of vocabulary Paul nation and
- 00:20:53Norbert Schmidt and ba aler these three
- 00:20:56scientists have the most citations in
- 00:20:58the field of vocabulary and so
- 00:21:01specifically talking about Norbert
- 00:21:02Schmidt he told me you know is it
- 00:21:05possible to learn a language 100%
- 00:21:08through input yes but would you go
- 00:21:12faster if you were to you know
- 00:21:14deliberately learn these words through
- 00:21:17various activities almost for sure and
- 00:21:20so um you know I also interviewed Dr
- 00:21:23Jeff mcquillin on my channel which you
- 00:21:25know he's such a cool guy and he speaks
- 00:21:28so well his interviews are I I think
- 00:21:31there's another Channel with one of his
- 00:21:33interviews and he gets so many views
- 00:21:35because he's he speaks very well and but
- 00:21:38I think also the internet tends to be
- 00:21:39skewed towards the more sort of extreme
- 00:21:42opinions which is nowadays it's well
- 00:21:45forget about you know school it doesn't
- 00:21:47work and deliberate learning activities
- 00:21:49I mean it's okay but your time would be
- 00:21:51better spent just listening and reading
- 00:21:54comprehensible input and that that's all
- 00:21:56you need I think it's okay but
- 00:21:59it's much you know it's very slow do you
- 00:22:01are you familiar with
- 00:22:03katom no katom was one of the world's
- 00:22:07greatest polyglots she's a Hungarian
- 00:22:09she's obviously passed away now but
- 00:22:11she's one of my heroes due to the fact
- 00:22:13of the the way with which she had to
- 00:22:15figure out and learn languages she would
- 00:22:18laugh at Americans deliberately it's
- 00:22:20it's quite funny reading her book you
- 00:22:21know because number one you can you can
- 00:22:23get deeply into the head of someone who
- 00:22:25had to struggle in order to learn these
- 00:22:26languages I mean I think she was
- 00:22:29interpreting and and understood 16 but
- 00:22:32she understood even more than than this
- 00:22:33and she she she laughed at the the West
- 00:22:37even uh let's say Americans and North
- 00:22:39Americans in general with their love of
- 00:22:41ease the love of the desire to you know
- 00:22:44I would say the input and this the
- 00:22:46natural method and all of these things
- 00:22:47are very popular in the west more than I
- 00:22:49would say that they probably are in the
- 00:22:51East she also she's brilliant so the
- 00:22:54fact that you don't know her is really
- 00:22:55really interesting you should definitely
- 00:22:56check her out but I want to touch on the
- 00:22:58fact that time and so for her she
- 00:23:00literally says if I'm remembering this
- 00:23:03correctly the name of her book is how I
- 00:23:04learn languages she was like if you
- 00:23:06don't have 10 to 12 hours a week to
- 00:23:08commit to learning a language don't do
- 00:23:10it he's like nah don't do it you know
- 00:23:13and so that is very different as well as
- 00:23:16she obviously uh you know and I'm in the
- 00:23:18same camp as well uh is that I believe
- 00:23:22you have to at some point wrestle with
- 00:23:24the language wrestling with the language
- 00:23:25is this deliberate that we're talking
- 00:23:27about it might be intensive learning
- 00:23:28where you have to read a sentence and
- 00:23:29you got to go over here and you got to
- 00:23:30check this out and you got to read a
- 00:23:31sentence you got to go over here and
- 00:23:32check this out again you got to do that
- 00:23:33again got today tomorrow the next day
- 00:23:35the same text you know and that's like a
- 00:23:377-Day thing and that sucks yeah but
- 00:23:40you're going to have to do it where I
- 00:23:42think it's funny is that well I believe
- 00:23:44that that's necessary we're both
- 00:23:45basically saying the same thing I think
- 00:23:47the problem is in that some people get
- 00:23:49stuck on doing this deliberate approach
- 00:23:52as their main and only right approach
- 00:23:55and they they don't get the input and
- 00:23:56they don't get the stuff and they spend
- 00:23:57all the time in the FL flash cards and
- 00:23:59and and that is where the problem lies
- 00:24:01right because that then makes makes it
- 00:24:03tough for you you never speak you don't
- 00:24:05listen whatever it is or that's it's at
- 00:24:06a small percentage you know and so I
- 00:24:08think that's a thing but one reason I
- 00:24:10wanted to bring up the time frame is cuz
- 00:24:11you mentioned these four things you know
- 00:24:13what was it listening and reading
- 00:24:15writing and speaking deliberate learning
- 00:24:16and then fluency
- 00:24:18development what about the time frame
- 00:24:21where do you put and how are you going
- 00:24:22to structure when you're going to learn
- 00:24:24this language how much time you spend to
- 00:24:26learn right so so you're speaking about
- 00:24:29the the ratio not necessarily the total
- 00:24:31duration of of timer not the total
- 00:24:33duration if you had to break down what
- 00:24:34you're going to spend each day on
- 00:24:35learning the language how much time are
- 00:24:37you going to spend or going to aim to
- 00:24:38spend right so I should mention that
- 00:24:41these four categories that I didn't
- 00:24:43invent them again it's from Professor
- 00:24:45Paul nation and in his book he calls
- 00:24:48them the four strands and there is
- 00:24:51no I mean there's no scientific evidence
- 00:24:54for the four strands in the sense that
- 00:24:57there is SCI ific evidence for the
- 00:24:59activities included in the four strands
- 00:25:01but you know grouping them like that as
- 00:25:03four strands it's a bit you know it's
- 00:25:06just his own sort of opinion what he
- 00:25:08says is that well if you want to learn a
- 00:25:10language then you should spend about an
- 00:25:12equal amount of time in these categories
- 00:25:14so 25% in input 25% output 25% uh
- 00:25:18deliberate learning and 25% fluency
- 00:25:22development however the the caveat here
- 00:25:24is and he mentions it in his book and
- 00:25:27that's what I'm going to do pretty much
- 00:25:29is the important thing is that you need
- 00:25:31to think about your own use cases like
- 00:25:34how are you going to use a language and
- 00:25:37specifically for me you know if I want
- 00:25:38to talk with people in this language
- 00:25:40then you know it doesn't really make a
- 00:25:44lot of sense to do a lot of writing for
- 00:25:46example and as I mentioned you know
- 00:25:47fluency development if I want to get
- 00:25:50started very you know just uh learn the
- 00:25:52language and not necessarily be very
- 00:25:55fluent with the language then I can just
- 00:25:57ignore this so it's really up to you to
- 00:26:00spend you know as much time as you want
- 00:26:02on the different strands depending on
- 00:26:04your need specifically in my case what I
- 00:26:07would say is that speaking is definitely
- 00:26:10going to be uh um an important component
- 00:26:13because at the end of the day I mean I'm
- 00:26:14going to make a YouTube video showing my
- 00:26:16results if I can't speak you know it
- 00:26:19looks it doesn't look very good so
- 00:26:22speaking is going to be important but
- 00:26:25what is keeping me awake at night more
- 00:26:28speaking is the listening cuz what I
- 00:26:30think I'm going to do is that I'm going
- 00:26:32to go on I don't know I talk here or
- 00:26:34whatever with a a teacher and shoot just
- 00:26:37the conversation no cuts and the person
- 00:26:39is just going to ask me questions in
- 00:26:41whatever the language is and if I just
- 00:26:44don't understand what the other person
- 00:26:46says then it doesn't look good either
- 00:26:49right so yeah speaking and listening and
- 00:26:52also I think um deliberate learning is
- 00:26:56is important because in my specific
- 00:26:58specific case and I think for a lot of
- 00:26:59people I know what the conversation is
- 00:27:02going to be about approximately right
- 00:27:05we're probably going to talk about like
- 00:27:07basic stuff like hobbies and how did you
- 00:27:10learn this language and stuff so this is
- 00:27:12stuff where I can actually take a look
- 00:27:14at the vocabulary that I'm probably
- 00:27:16going to be using and deliberately learn
- 00:27:18it so yeah this would be my sort of
- 00:27:21split my routine I
- 00:27:24guess uh but do you have an idea of how
- 00:27:26much time you're going to spend every
- 00:27:27day in order in order to do it like 3
- 00:27:30hours 4 hours 1 hour yeah so I'm
- 00:27:34planning on doing about I'm thinking
- 00:27:36either 3 months or 6 months we'll we'll
- 00:27:39see how it goes but the goal is also for
- 00:27:41me to do something that is at least
- 00:27:45somewhat realistic for people to
- 00:27:46replicate so let's say three months and
- 00:27:48then every day I'm putting myself at a
- 00:27:52maximum of two hours of really like
- 00:27:54active study which is it's still a lot
- 00:27:57of time for most people like you have a
- 00:27:59full-time job you have kids you have uh
- 00:28:01I don't know like a mortgage to pay so
- 00:28:03you know you have a their yeah exactly
- 00:28:05so two hours is the it's really like Max
- 00:28:09I'm saying two hours of active study so
- 00:28:10it could be you know you just do one
- 00:28:12hour and then you compensate on you
- 00:28:13makeup for it on weekends it's a lot but
- 00:28:16I think for a 3mon sort of period it's
- 00:28:19okay you can still you know be pretty
- 00:28:20intense about it and at the end of the 3
- 00:28:23months then you just uh stop the 2 hours
- 00:28:25so 2 hours of active study and the
- 00:28:27reason why I mentioned active study is
- 00:28:29because there's also some passive stuff
- 00:28:31so when you're commuting when you're
- 00:28:32clean cleaning and stuff this would be a
- 00:28:35lot of
- 00:28:36listening so in total I would estimate
- 00:28:39that definitely 2 hours daily of active
- 00:28:41study and probably you know around two
- 00:28:44hours of let's say just listening which
- 00:28:46in my opinion is easy to do you have two
- 00:28:48hours of just commuting and just
- 00:28:51cleaning and stuff that's great I mean
- 00:28:53yeah I mean that would put your Active
- 00:28:54Learning let's just you know if we
- 00:28:55guesstimate this at 240 hours after
- 00:28:58three 3 months but if you then add on
- 00:29:00some passive to that you know right
- 00:29:02you're at 480 you know and that's 500
- 00:29:04hours basically of language learning you
- 00:29:07know if done consistently with Focus
- 00:29:11within your use case I'm going to be
- 00:29:13honest I just all of the people you know
- 00:29:15you've had on and that I've had on and
- 00:29:17all this stuff if we boil it down to
- 00:29:19that right there like if we boil it down
- 00:29:21to this and we go to any average
- 00:29:22language learner and go okay guess what
- 00:29:24Lewis and Will are going to do for the
- 00:29:26next 3 months they're going to study
- 00:29:28about 500 hours and they're going to
- 00:29:30spend two of this have you done that and
- 00:29:33the answer will be no right and so
- 00:29:35everybody's still out there searching
- 00:29:37for the best thing and the best this and
- 00:29:39the best that we're just you know if you
- 00:29:40just kind of boil it down to to this
- 00:29:43that's what needs to happen right and I
- 00:29:46know we there's going to be caveats and
- 00:29:48nuances for every sort of thing out
- 00:29:51there but at the end of the day that's
- 00:29:53it and it's still like no one can do
- 00:29:55that no one can make you study or me
- 00:29:56study you have to study and that's just
- 00:29:58kind of how it is and so I think I
- 00:30:00wanted to talk about because your best
- 00:30:02use case and like knowing your and why
- 00:30:04you want to learn and what you want to
- 00:30:05do I think is is fantastic within
- 00:30:08learning people forget about this and
- 00:30:10that's going to lead to my next question
- 00:30:11but before that I wanted to discuss how
- 00:30:13you're going to maybe ignore a little
- 00:30:14bit about writing I don't want to
- 00:30:15misquote you but is that are you going
- 00:30:16to kind of put it to the small amount of
- 00:30:19writing or none at all because you're
- 00:30:20learning to speak that's right so
- 00:30:23writing I'm not going to focus on it at
- 00:30:25all or maybe a little bit I'm not really
- 00:30:27sure but I'm going to use writing most
- 00:30:30likely specifically in my for example in
- 00:30:32my decks my the an Decks that I made I
- 00:30:35changed the layout so that you use you
- 00:30:38know the the word in English appears and
- 00:30:40then you have to write down the word in
- 00:30:43whatever language it is that that you
- 00:30:44have the deck in so there is going to be
- 00:30:46some writing but not as extensively as
- 00:30:49you know just like in school where we do
- 00:30:52a lot of writing and so on okay okay you
- 00:30:55know I I find it funny because I don't
- 00:30:57write lot at the beginning of Learning a
- 00:30:59language right specifically with my hand
- 00:31:01and stuff MH as I've reached a more
- 00:31:04intermediate stage that's where that
- 00:31:06comes out because I feel that it makes
- 00:31:08you have the ability to pull a stream of
- 00:31:10Consciousness and kind of write in your
- 00:31:12thoughts and a journal and stuff like
- 00:31:14this at the beginning though I find that
- 00:31:17texting like typing to people and
- 00:31:19texting on things is fantastic because
- 00:31:22our autocorrect and all the stuff that
- 00:31:23we have on our phones lets you cheat a
- 00:31:25little bit but what it does is it lets
- 00:31:27yeah it lets you kind of have that
- 00:31:28communication and then you kind of can
- 00:31:31do it like you get to get a little
- 00:31:32helper the grammar it fixes your grammar
- 00:31:35if you guess at a word and spell it
- 00:31:37wrong it probably corrects it for you
- 00:31:39and so you know you have all this help
- 00:31:40and so I've noticed at the beginning
- 00:31:42that I kind of push people to text a
- 00:31:45little and also it takes away some of
- 00:31:46the anxiety Factor you're not speaking
- 00:31:49they can't see you you know you can go
- 00:31:52check it on chat GPT if you want to be
- 00:31:54extra careful then you're at least
- 00:31:56engaging in the language and so that's
- 00:31:57his me but uh that's interesting yeah
- 00:32:01yeah okay yeah do you want to comment on
- 00:32:04that you never yeah no I I think I um I
- 00:32:07never really thought too much about this
- 00:32:09because I'm not a big uh texter or
- 00:32:11anything but actually now that you now
- 00:32:13that you mention it it could be sort of
- 00:32:15a like training for you know then
- 00:32:18speaking where you speaking is just you
- 00:32:21have to come up with stuff uh live but
- 00:32:24then yeah I'll definitely think about
- 00:32:26this it's interesting it's it's
- 00:32:28interesting it's what I what I found you
- 00:32:29know everybody has their Quirk and their
- 00:32:31thing that that that is tough for them
- 00:32:33to do Etc and at the end of the day just
- 00:32:35like we we said you need to be engaged
- 00:32:36and you need to be either you know
- 00:32:38Finding ways to be active and passive
- 00:32:39within the language what are your
- 00:32:41thoughts on du lingo and I'm not even
- 00:32:44going to preface it with anything just
- 00:32:45tell me your thoughts on dualingo well
- 00:32:47so I did use dualingo back when I was
- 00:32:51probably what do you call a second year
- 00:32:53of college there's freshman and then
- 00:32:55sopore
- 00:32:56sophomore right sophomore more year of
- 00:32:58college so I used it because I was sort
- 00:33:01of I mean I was learning Italian so I
- 00:33:04used it for Italian I also I had a brief
- 00:33:07period when I wanted to learn Spanish my
- 00:33:10greatest Nemesis because I mean just
- 00:33:13long story short when I was in school at
- 00:33:15high school and and before high school I
- 00:33:16studied Spanish for 5 years and I mean
- 00:33:20it was just a disaster and you know most
- 00:33:22of it is just my own fault I was really
- 00:33:24not motivated and so on but so yeah I
- 00:33:27did use du lingo so I'm just going to
- 00:33:29preface the the whole thing with that I
- 00:33:31think there there have been updates to
- 00:33:35dual lingo so it's not quite the same
- 00:33:36cuz we're talking about a little bit
- 00:33:39less than 10 years
- 00:33:41ago but I think overall seeing at least
- 00:33:46what I've seen online and my own
- 00:33:47experience I think it's fine but to me
- 00:33:51the problem is like first of all the
- 00:33:53incentive of dual lingo you have to
- 00:33:55think about that right so when you buy a
- 00:33:58language learning app for example I
- 00:34:00don't know like something that is paid
- 00:34:02for then okay they get money when you
- 00:34:04buy but with dual lingo the model is
- 00:34:06very much uh I think there's the super
- 00:34:08dual lingo thing where you can buy the
- 00:34:11subscription but really the main
- 00:34:13business model is ADS right they make
- 00:34:16money on ads and so you know it's just
- 00:34:19like Facebook it's just like Instagram
- 00:34:21and Tik Tok and whatever young people
- 00:34:23use these days they want to keep you on
- 00:34:25the site and in the app so you can see
- 00:34:27as many app as possible which is fine
- 00:34:29but then you know the extent to which
- 00:34:32this is aligned with your goal of
- 00:34:35learning a language that's debatable so
- 00:34:38they have this constant sort of war
- 00:34:40between we want you to learn a language
- 00:34:41but we want you to spend as much time on
- 00:34:43the app so it wouldn't be surprising for
- 00:34:46me if they use you know tricks to just
- 00:34:48get you to the app but I mean these
- 00:34:50tricks are not necessarily benefiting
- 00:34:52your language learning that's why you
- 00:34:54get always the reminders about you know
- 00:34:56the owl that that says hey have you
- 00:34:58studied today and I mean consistency is
- 00:35:00great but does it align with your
- 00:35:03language learning I don't know and then
- 00:35:05there there's also something to say
- 00:35:07about I think I looked at you know the
- 00:35:09number of words like the vocabulary
- 00:35:11there that is covered by dual lingo it's
- 00:35:13fine you know I mean you can get started
- 00:35:15with dual lingo but there's no way that
- 00:35:16you can just go through the entire thing
- 00:35:19and be fluent I mean that's it and then
- 00:35:22you know I I think there's also
- 00:35:24something to say about the the type the
- 00:35:27types of people that do dual lingo I
- 00:35:29mean not criticizing or anything but
- 00:35:31dual lingo is so popular and usually
- 00:35:33people who really think about learning
- 00:35:36languages they're going to you know do
- 00:35:39their own thing and do more let's say
- 00:35:41customized they have a more customized
- 00:35:43approach when you go and study with an
- 00:35:46app it's very you're very limited
- 00:35:49personally I don't really like learning
- 00:35:51with you know very sort of like dual
- 00:35:53lingu and these types of things because
- 00:35:56I know what I have to do to get the
- 00:35:58vocabulary and and become fluent it's
- 00:36:00not that they're bad but I have my own
- 00:36:02thing that I want to do
- 00:36:04so yeah yeah I mean it's in many ways it
- 00:36:07can it can be a complex subject
- 00:36:09understanding the whether or not
- 00:36:10dualingo is helpful or or not but yeah I
- 00:36:13think you've you've hit it on the head I
- 00:36:14think most once again not criticizing
- 00:36:16serious language Learners wouldn't look
- 00:36:18there first to figure it out because of
- 00:36:21the things that we talked about already
- 00:36:22you know about how you need to be custom
- 00:36:25you need to be customizing your your
- 00:36:26language learning where you need to be
- 00:36:28spending your time you spend a lot of
- 00:36:30time translating things into your mother
- 00:36:32tongue in dual language or reading your
- 00:36:33mother tongue or at least English so not
- 00:36:36not as much time in your target language
- 00:36:37and that I think gets to be a problem I
- 00:36:39want to go back real quick because I
- 00:36:41know you did say listing is going to be
- 00:36:43so huge we've talked a little about
- 00:36:45intensive and extensive reading but I'm
- 00:36:47kind of curious what are you going to
- 00:36:49read if you if you do choose read how do
- 00:36:52you choose it because that's something I
- 00:36:53know people have a hard time doing and
- 00:36:56you may not spend a whole lot of time
- 00:36:57doing but when you choose to read and
- 00:36:58you're learning a new language like what
- 00:37:01what do you
- 00:37:02do yeah so this is a bit problematic
- 00:37:05because I think the the approach for me
- 00:37:08at least has been drastically different
- 00:37:10like between uh so for example you know
- 00:37:13Italian and and Japanese because Italian
- 00:37:16you know very easy language to to learn
- 00:37:18for English speakers Japanese it's like
- 00:37:20one of the hardest language and there's
- 00:37:23completely different writing system for
- 00:37:26languages that are very hard like
- 00:37:28Japanese or not even like with a
- 00:37:30different alphabet I'm thinking of let's
- 00:37:32see what's a hard language with a Latin
- 00:37:34alphabet I mean I I don't know German is
- 00:37:37not like super hard but it's it's a lot
- 00:37:39harder than than Italian for example if
- 00:37:42I pick up a book in German as someone
- 00:37:45who's been learning German for a
- 00:37:47month well you know this is not going to
- 00:37:50be comprehensible at all I'm just not
- 00:37:52really going to understand anything so I
- 00:37:55would probably need to get some material
- 00:37:58that is more at my level so you know the
- 00:38:00the people I've interviewed talk a lot
- 00:38:02about graded readers in German the thing
- 00:38:04is with graded readers and all these
- 00:38:06kinds of you know Learning Materials
- 00:38:08they're just boring a lot of time or at
- 00:38:10least they're not tailored to your
- 00:38:12interests and that's when I think using
- 00:38:15AI now I mean it's just uh it's so great
- 00:38:17I mean you can get such a lot of written
- 00:38:19input for for free and at the right
- 00:38:22level for you so I would probably use
- 00:38:24that for easier languages that are more
- 00:38:28similar to English like Spanish and
- 00:38:30Italian you can actually get started at
- 00:38:32least that's what I do with just normal
- 00:38:34books that you would get you know for
- 00:38:36native speakers specifically what I do
- 00:38:38for Italian I have a actually I have a
- 00:38:41book here in Italian that I I bought a
- 00:38:43long time ago I don't know if if you can
- 00:38:44see it here yeah it's a cal Newport okay
- 00:38:49cool yeah so it's a book that typically
- 00:38:51that's what I do I get books that I read
- 00:38:54in English so this one I think is is
- 00:38:57called you Cal Newport so the author of
- 00:38:59of deepor it's like so good they can't
- 00:39:01ignore you so I I get the same book that
- 00:39:03I read in English and I get it in
- 00:39:06Italian and so what this does is okay so
- 00:39:09maybe it's a little bit difficult but
- 00:39:11because English is so close to Italian
- 00:39:15then there's there are lots of words
- 00:39:16that I can guess number one and number
- 00:39:19two I've read the book so I know what
- 00:39:21it's about and so a lot of it I can
- 00:39:23guess from Context and it's really
- 00:39:25interesting to me even though it's not
- 00:39:27completely comprehensible input in the
- 00:39:29sense that it's maybe you know way above
- 00:39:33my head but because I can understand a
- 00:39:35lot of it and I I really like it then
- 00:39:37that's what I would go for honestly yeah
- 00:39:40that's great I mean it goes back to the
- 00:39:41very first thing that we were talking
- 00:39:42about I mean that desire and passion
- 00:39:43mean you like the subject you read it
- 00:39:45already and so that allows you to push
- 00:39:48past some of those words or go look them
- 00:39:50up if you need to in order to keep going
- 00:39:52you you hit the nail them oh actually I
- 00:39:54wanted to mention have you heard of the
- 00:39:56show Extra
- 00:39:58extra no I'm not sure what what is that
- 00:40:00so extra is a series let's call it the
- 00:40:03like a and I never watched friends so I
- 00:40:05don't really know this but this is what
- 00:40:06how I describe it the best a cringey
- 00:40:08friends for language Learners and it's a
- 00:40:10series they did in Spanish I think they
- 00:40:12did it also for English Learners French
- 00:40:16German I'm not sure if they have Italian
- 00:40:17I don't think there is an Italian but
- 00:40:19they did it for at least those languages
- 00:40:21and it is based off of comprehensible
- 00:40:24input I mean imagine if a series was
- 00:40:25done just for that it's kind of lingo
- 00:40:27pie I know you know as well right and
- 00:40:29they do a lot of stuff like this but
- 00:40:31this was well before obviously lingo Pai
- 00:40:33and well before all of that um stuff
- 00:40:35it's pretty cool um and so for people
- 00:40:38looking to try and like what series
- 00:40:40could I watch you can watch that on day
- 00:40:43one you know episode one day one you can
- 00:40:46watch it and then as of course it goes
- 00:40:47through episode to 10 or 12 or whatever
- 00:40:50it gets more complex let's say right so
- 00:40:53I just wanted to mention that but you
- 00:40:54you touched on AI and I'm curious how
- 00:40:56are you going to imp ment any of all of
- 00:40:59AI into your your language learning now
- 00:41:02so yeah up until now I've been I mean up
- 00:41:04until probably six months ago I was just
- 00:41:07unimpressed with AI and I didn't really
- 00:41:09look into it but I got introduced to AI
- 00:41:12through my work as a software developer
- 00:41:15and um I mean I I have to say I'm a
- 00:41:17little bit worried that in 10 years I'm
- 00:41:19not going to have a job honestly so I
- 00:41:21should do some you know investing and
- 00:41:23stuff but anyway so the AI part yeah I
- 00:41:27I think it's really impressive and it is
- 00:41:29really a game changer I made a video
- 00:41:31that I think I deleted because now I
- 00:41:33think it's stupid titled AI is is not
- 00:41:36going to change anything or something
- 00:41:37like that because I really think I
- 00:41:39really thought that back then but I
- 00:41:41think I deleted the video it's stupid it
- 00:41:43is a game changer so the way that I use
- 00:41:46it in my learning so first of all I
- 00:41:48don't know if people are aware but the
- 00:41:50the anex that I made they use AI
- 00:41:53extensively obviously it's not
- 00:41:55interactive or anything but each word
- 00:41:57has an example sentence it has aonic
- 00:42:01using the qword technique it has a word
- 00:42:03part analysis all of these things have
- 00:42:05been generated by AI there's no way that
- 00:42:07I could you know manually or hire
- 00:42:09someone a Japanese person to generate
- 00:42:12this for 8,000 to 11,000 cards it would
- 00:42:15be way too expensive yeah so this is
- 00:42:18generated by Ai and most of the time
- 00:42:20it's it's really good obviously there
- 00:42:22are a few cards where it's it's not
- 00:42:24great but for the most part it's really
- 00:42:26good so I'm going to using this the
- 00:42:27flashcards which do use AI then for for
- 00:42:31listening as well I do plan on on on
- 00:42:34using I don't know chat GPT or some
- 00:42:37other AI for just doing a lot of
- 00:42:39listening because then I can ask
- 00:42:41questions and really get tailored sort
- 00:42:43of listening based on my own
- 00:42:45interests the thing here and I don't
- 00:42:48know if you've had this experience but
- 00:42:50when you talk to chat GPT at least in
- 00:42:53Japanese and I suppose in other
- 00:42:55languages it answers in perfect Japanese
- 00:42:58but with it's like an American person
- 00:43:00like there there is an American accent
- 00:43:02an English accent in perfect Japanese
- 00:43:05it's like an American person who lives
- 00:43:07who has been living in Japan since
- 00:43:09they're like 20 so I'm not really sure
- 00:43:11how to to address this issue but I still
- 00:43:14think in spite of the accent it's worth
- 00:43:16using in terms of listening because it's
- 00:43:18so tailored to you know like you're
- 00:43:20having a conversation it's all about the
- 00:43:22things that you like at your level as
- 00:43:24well there is an American accent but oh
- 00:43:27well you know I guess um we'll have to
- 00:43:29to work with that and apart from this oh
- 00:43:32yes and I mentioned the an activity for
- 00:43:34speaking rehearsed or memorized speeches
- 00:43:37memorized sentences all of these are you
- 00:43:40know I just write it write like the
- 00:43:42English version and I tell chat GPT well
- 00:43:45translate this to me in you know like B1
- 00:43:48level in this language and so all of
- 00:43:51this uses AI so I guess I'm using AI
- 00:43:54extensively now yeah you're right I mean
- 00:43:56it's such a huge tool and it's a game
- 00:43:59Cher If you know how to utilize some of
- 00:44:02the the tools if I was going to take
- 00:44:03someone who' never learned a language
- 00:44:04and said here here's ai go go for it I
- 00:44:07don't think that they would have much
- 00:44:09success because they'd still have the
- 00:44:10same issues of not knowing what to do
- 00:44:12that being said we are not yet at the
- 00:44:14point where I can I would tell anyone to
- 00:44:17eliminate good language teacher that's a
- 00:44:20human I don't know when but I'm with you
- 00:44:22like who knows what's going to happen
- 00:44:24over the course of these these years but
- 00:44:26right now it's just so clearly not
- 00:44:28better than native speaker who interacts
- 00:44:31and is within the world that we're not
- 00:44:32close it's not close like at all but it
- 00:44:36is it is tremendous what you can
- 00:44:39do I want to touch just a little bit if
- 00:44:41we if we can if you can remember when
- 00:44:43you were trying to learn your your first
- 00:44:45language which was Italian right we've
- 00:44:47talked about this now guess was that the
- 00:44:49first or Spanish Engish yeah or English
- 00:44:51Okay okay so well okay we'll we'll we'll
- 00:44:53push past English given its status
- 00:44:55within the world did you have have your
- 00:44:57end goal in mind like did you know that
- 00:44:59you were trying to aim with Italian did
- 00:45:02you know you were trying to aim for
- 00:45:03stuff or did you focus only on being
- 00:45:06able to have your first conversation
- 00:45:07because I I hear
- 00:45:09people that start with I'm going to do
- 00:45:12this and read this book by this time and
- 00:45:14other people who are just like if I
- 00:45:16could just say a couple things it'd be
- 00:45:18great what do you you know where do you
- 00:45:20find to be the best there right for
- 00:45:23Italian for for instance I'm not really
- 00:45:26sure this is a good mindset to have and
- 00:45:28I'm not sure that most people can have
- 00:45:30this mindset I was just overconfident I
- 00:45:34think I thought well you know asml they
- 00:45:37say on the book cover you know you're
- 00:45:39going to be I don't know what it was
- 00:45:41maybe B2 level and then I get the C1
- 00:45:43book well that's what I'm going to be
- 00:45:45right and uh it didn't really help that
- 00:45:49actually my grandmother who is a Swiss a
- 00:45:52Swiss German she said yeah I I used you
- 00:45:55know asmil extensively when I was
- 00:45:57working at the Swiss post office where
- 00:46:00you have to you know answer the phone in
- 00:46:01different languages and it just worked
- 00:46:03so I was like okay well I guess it works
- 00:46:05so I'm going to be C1 in Italian once I
- 00:46:07just finish the books so this was my my
- 00:46:10mindset I to me I was very naive
- 00:46:12obviously so my goal was just finish the
- 00:46:15books and you're going to be C1 that's
- 00:46:18it and I guess this was one goal the
- 00:46:20other goal for me was just being able to
- 00:46:23speak in Italian with the other Italian
- 00:46:25speakers in my school that was the goal
- 00:46:28and also I guess it sounds a little bit
- 00:46:30stupid but one of my main sources of
- 00:46:32input for Italian was Master Chef Master
- 00:46:36Chef Italia yeah um and I just thought
- 00:46:39yeah I I want to speak like this I don't
- 00:46:41remember the name of the the judges but
- 00:46:43yeah that's cool I think my mentality
- 00:46:46with Italian is very similar because I
- 00:46:48have absolutely no idea why I wanted to
- 00:46:52learn truly like it just I have a deep
- 00:46:55desire to learn you know and continue
- 00:46:57learning Italian with I had there's zero
- 00:47:00goal like there zero thing at the end
- 00:47:02like be able to do this I had none of
- 00:47:04that is just like all right for the rest
- 00:47:05of my life I'm going to just study this
- 00:47:07horrible horrible advice for any I'm not
- 00:47:10advising anyone to just commit their
- 00:47:12life to learning this this language
- 00:47:14however if you do pick that pick up that
- 00:47:17bug you're pretty much Unstoppable just
- 00:47:19to be perfectly honest nothing's really
- 00:47:22going to phase you you're going to go
- 00:47:23through the the dips and the downs and
- 00:47:24you're not going to be able to maybe
- 00:47:26study sometime and you're not going to
- 00:47:27be able to understand some stuff but it
- 00:47:29just won't phase you you and so that's
- 00:47:32cool maybe if we and we've got just a
- 00:47:35couple we'll save it maybe we'll save it
- 00:47:37for next time because I'm really curious
- 00:47:38about what you're what you're learning
- 00:47:39so you're going to have to come back on
- 00:47:40in order to discuss what it is that
- 00:47:42you're doing how it goes we'll you know
- 00:47:44we'll we'll get a whole de debrief in
- 00:47:46there and we'll we'll talk about what
- 00:47:47you're what you're doing and I don't
- 00:47:49know this but if I happen to do you know
- 00:47:52if I speak any the language that you're
- 00:47:55learning I believe so yeah yeah yeah no
- 00:47:57actually I'm pretty sure I would love
- 00:47:59then I would you come on after you've
- 00:48:00done your your stuff and do that stuff
- 00:48:02we'll come and we'll we'll bring people
- 00:48:03to you and it would be great it would be
- 00:48:05great to to chat it up and i' would love
- 00:48:07to you know pick your brain because
- 00:48:09somebody so so so well you know focused
- 00:48:12on on learning you're going to pick up
- 00:48:13on a bunch of little stuff here you know
- 00:48:16on on doing it so yeah that be so cool
- 00:48:18yeah in three months or in in a few
- 00:48:20months we can definitely uh do this yeah
- 00:48:22totally totally okay yeah excited for it
- 00:48:24yeah when when you put it out and when
- 00:48:26you let everybody know which is do you
- 00:48:27know yet when you're going to tell
- 00:48:28everybody um I'm
- 00:48:30thinking I'm not going to say anything
- 00:48:33uh till when I'm finished essentially so
- 00:48:36minimum of 12 weeks I'm thinking yeah 12
- 00:48:39weeks maybe up to 20 weeks okay all
- 00:48:42right so sometime next year obvious this
- 00:48:44this beginning more or less beginning
- 00:48:45part okay that's right well excellent
- 00:48:47excellent listen other than your YouTube
- 00:48:49channel is there anywhere else you want
- 00:48:50us to send people we'll link to
- 00:48:52everything that you also have but is
- 00:48:53there anywhere else that might be better
- 00:48:55to link people to so there's my YouTube
- 00:48:57channel if you want to take a look at
- 00:49:00the anidex that I made it's anord de.com

- 00:49:06the YouTube is really the main thing
- 00:49:07where I interview uh researchers in the
- 00:49:10field of of language
