  • 00:00:00
look thank you thank you everyone for
  • 00:00:01
joining um just an introduction first
  • 00:00:03
for myself RAV joal um focus of today's
  • 00:00:06
session will be to walk through how an
  • 00:00:08
organization so Tom from Wilson James
  • 00:00:11
has gone through the process of
  • 00:00:13
    evaluating selecting then implementing a
  • 00:00:15
data analytics platform uh so the focus
  • 00:00:18
    will be on
  • 00:00:19
    self-service culture change and adoption
  • 00:00:22
itself um so we split it into two
  • 00:00:25
focuses so the initial part will be
  • 00:00:26
about how you know Wilson James has gone
  • 00:00:28
    through the process of actually
  • 00:00:30
evaluating a solution so what their
  • 00:00:31
requirements were to then looking at the
  • 00:00:34
changing culture so how to shift the
  • 00:00:36
mindset internally um and adopt in a new
  • 00:00:38
solution um for those of you that don't
  • 00:00:40
know who Domo are so Domo is an end to
  • 00:00:42
end data analytics platform um we cover
  • 00:00:45
the entire Journey from data integration
  • 00:00:48
all the way through to analytics and
  • 00:00:50
insights and dashboarding um really the
  • 00:00:53
value for customers is the the speed to
  • 00:00:55
the speed to value is being able to
  • 00:00:58
integrate your data through our connect
  • 00:01:00
framework so whether it's on premise
  • 00:01:02
database whether you're looking at Cloud
  • 00:01:04
systems to then be able to host that
  • 00:01:06
data in Domo data warehouse or third
  • 00:01:09
    party transforming preparing the data
  • 00:01:11
and then being able to create
  • 00:01:13
    visualizations and insights to
  • 00:01:15
    ultimately have that self-service
  • 00:01:17
culture but drive the business forward
  • 00:01:19
using data so from that side obviously
  • 00:01:22
we're not here too much to talk about
  • 00:01:23
Domo uh but Tom from from your
  • 00:01:26
perspective thank you thank you for
  • 00:01:27
joining today so maybe to begin with um
  • 00:01:30
be good just to give an insight into who
  • 00:01:32
Wilson James are uh the industries you
  • 00:01:34
work in um and then over in terms of the
  • 00:01:36
scale you're at and the vision you have
  • 00:01:38
as an organization yes I think we're
  • 00:01:40
probably one of the largest businesses
  • 00:01:42
people haven't heard of so we work
  • 00:01:43
    across security construction Logistics
  • 00:01:45
    Aviation and Technology as our
  • 00:01:47
predominant service lines um we founded
  • 00:01:49
as a security business 31 years ago
  • 00:01:51
still owner Le and operated so that
  • 00:01:53
that's really wonderful for us and we
  • 00:01:55
employ about 6,000 people so I guess for
  • 00:01:58
us the the the vision is that we have a
  • 00:02:00
you know people are the core of our
  • 00:02:02
product and the core of our offering um
  • 00:02:04
but it's so for us and our data Journeys
  • 00:02:06
about how do we enable our people using
  • 00:02:08
data yeah so that's really where we we
  • 00:02:11
came about with this about 18 months ago
  • 00:02:13
perfect and in terms of you work across
  • 00:02:14
    various Industries is there certain
  • 00:02:16
industries that maybe data plays a bit
  • 00:02:18
more of a pivotal part in yeah
  • 00:02:20
absolutely so I mean as you can imagine
  • 00:02:22
Aviation yeah every single part of every
  • 00:02:25
journey is absolutely captured um and
  • 00:02:27
we're working with thousands of data
  • 00:02:29
points and so at heo for example we we
  • 00:02:31
    provide passenger assistance for for
  • 00:02:33
passengers who are who require Mobility
  • 00:02:35
assistance through their journey and we
  • 00:02:36
support about 1.8 million passengers a
  • 00:02:39
year in that and you know the entire
  • 00:02:42
service is driven by data which is
  • 00:02:44
    captured by your airline booking
  • 00:02:46
information that then contributes to how
  • 00:02:48
do we service the passenger how do we
  • 00:02:49
engage with them on the flight and
  • 00:02:51
    understand our demand to forecasting
  • 00:02:52
yeah but there's so many contributing
  • 00:02:54
factors to something like that um and
  • 00:02:56
then in construction Logistics so we we
  • 00:02:59
    support the consolidation delivery Waste
  • 00:03:02
Management that kind of thing of huge
  • 00:03:03
construction projects you know I was
  • 00:03:05
discussing this morning we we're you
  • 00:03:07
    know heavily involved in building
  • 00:03:08
Hinkley power plant for example and so
  • 00:03:10
again every part of that is about
  • 00:03:12
delivering a really efficient service to
  • 00:03:15
our to our clients and again you know
  • 00:03:17
we're measuring pallet loads but then a
  • 00:03:19
    huge amount of info around
  • 00:03:20
sustainability as well so we had so much
  • 00:03:22
data um and didn't know what to do with
  • 00:03:24
it and a lot of different data points
  • 00:03:26
and getting access to data and and Tom
  • 00:03:28
in terms of kind of your role at at
  • 00:03:30
Wilson James um from been there six
  • 00:03:32
years is that correct six years and
  • 00:03:33
obviously you've kind of worked through
  • 00:03:36
the organization from being initi in
  • 00:03:37
kind of that operational role to now
  • 00:03:39
being you know the role of business
  • 00:03:41
Improvement director how has how has
  • 00:03:43
that Journey been and and also how is
  • 00:03:44
kind of data and Reporting played a part
  • 00:03:46
from operationally all the way through
  • 00:03:47
to where you are now yeah so I I don't
  • 00:03:51
think I'd call myself a technical person
  • 00:03:52
I think my colleagues would probably
  • 00:03:54
call me a technical person just by
  • 00:03:55
virtue of of what I do but so um I
  • 00:03:58
started working at gwi airport in a a
  • 00:04:00
real operational role and then took an
  • 00:04:02
interest in how do we do how do we plan
  • 00:04:04
how do we drive efficiency into that
  • 00:04:05
service and and then came to start
  • 00:04:07
driving our planning our forecasting all
  • 00:04:09
that kind of stuff and and back then it
  • 00:04:11
was a another bi platform I what name um
  • 00:04:14
and we were just starting to get to
  • 00:04:15
grips with that and that was just
  • 00:04:16
engaging with like Excel data and
  • 00:04:18
playing around with that um and that I
  • 00:04:20
guess that's where my data Journey
  • 00:04:21
started uh from there I moved into some
  • 00:04:23
project roles so I was delivering new
  • 00:04:25
projects and stuff like that and then
  • 00:04:28
    from there moved into business
  • 00:04:29
Improvement I think it's really telling
  • 00:04:31
that we we house our data function
  • 00:04:33
inside of business Improvement um part
  • 00:04:36
of the organization because for us data
  • 00:04:38
is all about how do we improve our
  • 00:04:40
organization and that's been the case
  • 00:04:42
you know for the last two years since
  • 00:04:43
ring that function um and and I think
  • 00:04:45
that's really helped us with Direction
  • 00:04:47
in what we do because ultimately you
  • 00:04:49
know I find a big problem when you speak
  • 00:04:51
to people in the data space is they
  • 00:04:52
gather millions and millions of data
  • 00:04:54
points but it's really difficult to
  • 00:04:56
discern the ones that are valuable to
  • 00:04:57
the ones that are worthless and you end
  • 00:04:59
up spending a huge amount of time and
  • 00:05:00
    effort building data governance and
  • 00:05:03
cleansing and all this sorts of stuff
  • 00:05:04
but ultimately data that doesn't drive
  • 00:05:05
any value doesn't drive any Revenue
  • 00:05:07
    doesn't improve your employee attention
  • 00:05:09
engagement and that kind of thing so
  • 00:05:12
over the last six years having worked in
  • 00:05:15
five roles I think uh in Wilson James
  • 00:05:17
it's been quite a journey um I've seen
  • 00:05:20
the impact of the 16 platforms that we
  • 00:05:23
use to run our organization um of having
  • 00:05:26
all of them in isolation doing a
  • 00:05:28
different thing in different place and
  • 00:05:30
then I've seen our operators our people
  • 00:05:32
on the ground struggling to extract
  • 00:05:35
information into Exel or however that
  • 00:05:38
looks and trying to pull it together
  • 00:05:39
alongside each other um and that's in
  • 00:05:41
our op team but also in support So if
  • 00:05:44
you consider employee retention as a as
  • 00:05:47
a data point you know I did some time in
  • 00:05:49
nhr and you measure that but do you
  • 00:05:51
really understand what contributes to it
  • 00:05:53
and I think all of us can put a finger
  • 00:05:55
on what we think drives employee
  • 00:05:58
retention but but it's so many things
  • 00:06:01
and that could be around how many
  • 00:06:03
accidents how safe do people feel on a
  • 00:06:05
site if they feel unsafe they'll
  • 00:06:06
probably leave how regularly they being
  • 00:06:08
trained well that's in a different
  • 00:06:09
platform for us um is their pay accurate
  • 00:06:11
and on time okay well that's in sap so
  • 00:06:13
that's locked away there and you start
  • 00:06:15
to look at all of these data points in
  • 00:06:17
isolation and it becomes really hard for
  • 00:06:19
anyone to make a positive impact on a
  • 00:06:21
challenge in the organization yeah um
  • 00:06:23
and so yeah that's if we talk about how
  • 00:06:25
do we land with Domo I think a year and
  • 00:06:27
a half ago that was the problem I was
  • 00:06:28
    wrestling with in in business
  • 00:06:30
Improvement I spent 6 years in our
  • 00:06:32
business seeing all the ways that it was
  • 00:06:34
    dysfunctional and understanding that
  • 00:06:36
actually no one knew what was really
  • 00:06:39
going on they they all had a view of
  • 00:06:41
their own slice but they couldn't see
  • 00:06:43
    the overarching picture in the
  • 00:06:45
organization and and maybe that's to the
  • 00:06:46
point where you get to where we talk
  • 00:06:47
about how you how you come across Domo
  • 00:06:49
yeah um and maybe be good to to walk
  • 00:06:51
through um is just understanding you
  • 00:06:54
know what initially you were you were
  • 00:06:55
looking for and actually how you come
  • 00:06:56
across Domo in the in the first place
  • 00:06:58
yeah so I talked about our 16 platforms
  • 00:07:00
and so for context that could be you
  • 00:07:02
know health and safety capture platform
  • 00:07:04
that could be our time and attendance uh
  • 00:07:07
tool or sap which drives our finance our
  • 00:07:10
payroll and all of our employee data um
  • 00:07:12
across to our allocation system in in
  • 00:07:15
    aviation or into our construction
  • 00:07:17
Logistics management platform which is a
  • 00:07:19
folr and one of our proprietary products
  • 00:07:21
um and so there were two things land
  • 00:07:23
demo one was to bring all that together
  • 00:07:26
um we needed a bi tool that had a layer
  • 00:07:28
that empowered us to connect to all of
  • 00:07:30
them and could do it quickly um we're a
  • 00:07:32
very agile organization our CEO is still
  • 00:07:36
the guy who founded it 31 years ago and
  • 00:07:38
so when he rubber stamps something and
  • 00:07:40
says let's go he expects you know quick
  • 00:07:43
results um it's not about let's roll out
  • 00:07:45
a 5year strategy of how we're going to
  • 00:07:47
deploy this tool it's okay go out
  • 00:07:49
deliver it quick and let's see value
  • 00:07:50
really quickly so that part of Domo we
  • 00:07:53
really loved and then the other part is
  • 00:07:55
unlocking sap data which for us we spoke
  • 00:07:58
with multip B tools we spoke with a data
  • 00:08:02
connection consultancy who came back to
  • 00:08:05
us and said it can't be done without
  • 00:08:07
    paying for additional access license
  • 00:08:09
which anyone who engages with sap or
  • 00:08:11
know costs a lot of money um and Doo's
  • 00:08:15
ability to connect to the the database
  • 00:08:18
level of sap circumvented the need for
  • 00:08:20
that digital access license and we had a
  • 00:08:22
long uh drawn out conversation with sap
  • 00:08:24
around that and got confirmation um and
  • 00:08:27
so yeah the ability to unlock that data
  • 00:08:29
from sap which ultimately runs our
  • 00:08:31
    finance our procurement our
  • 00:08:34
employees everything in our business if
  • 00:08:36
    we couldn't get that business
  • 00:08:38
intelligence and analytics for us was
  • 00:08:40
dead because we would be looking at
  • 00:08:42
everything without you know 80% of our
  • 00:08:44
information yeah exactly I think that
  • 00:08:46
will resonate with with a lot of people
  • 00:08:47
in the audience is that the need to not
  • 00:08:50
just acquire from one database but it's
  • 00:08:52
    that multiple databased across multiple
  • 00:08:54
departments and I think the obviously
  • 00:08:55
the benefit you had Tom is that you
  • 00:08:57
because you've had that operational role
  • 00:08:58
you understand into what the challenges
  • 00:09:00
were maybe in finance in sales in
  • 00:09:02
marketing as well and the data they need
  • 00:09:04
and what they need access to to to drive
  • 00:09:06
the business forward yeah I think you
  • 00:09:08
know we as data people and I'm assuming
  • 00:09:09
most people listening to this are data
  • 00:09:11
people you know we often um we have a
  • 00:09:13
tendency to to decide what the outcome
  • 00:09:16
is for the person who wants something
  • 00:09:17
and then we build the outcome and then
  • 00:09:18
we're surprised when no one engages with
  • 00:09:20
it or listens to us and they just think
  • 00:09:22
we're data people who should be locked
  • 00:09:23
up in a Cupboard somewhere um so I think
  • 00:09:25
    having that operational background and
  • 00:09:27
coming into it from that is to say
  • 00:09:28
actually this won't land this won't give
  • 00:09:31
people what they're looking for and
  • 00:09:33
therefore no one's ever going to listen
  • 00:09:34
to us so we need to start with you know
  • 00:09:37
the output in mind and the the flip side
  • 00:09:40
of that is you know a lot of non-at
  • 00:09:41
people don't know the question they W
  • 00:09:43
answered either so I always talk you
  • 00:09:45
know that Henry Ford quote if it is a
  • 00:09:47
real one around you know if I'd ask
  • 00:09:48
people what they wanted they would have
  • 00:09:49
set a faster horse yeah I often have
  • 00:09:52
that engagement with people around you
  • 00:09:54
know I want to know what my staff
  • 00:09:55
attention is okay that's great but you
  • 00:09:57
not want to know why your staff
  • 00:09:59
attention is that high or low or
  • 00:10:00
whatever that looks like so I think our
  • 00:10:02
role in our team and you know as data
  • 00:10:05
people is to is to not be that end point
  • 00:10:09
it's to bridge the gap between the the
  • 00:10:12
need and and what's delivered yeah and
  • 00:10:14
you know you talked to the beginning
  • 00:10:15
around Domo being that false sweep um
  • 00:10:18
and I think that you know that really
  • 00:10:19
matches with what our team is trying to
  • 00:10:21
do um we have to be at the front getting
  • 00:10:23
the data and ensuring it's clean and you
  • 00:10:25
know hold handling the whole ETL process
  • 00:10:28
but we also need to be responsible for
  • 00:10:30
delivering the value at the end yeah I
  • 00:10:32
often get challenged by our coo around
  • 00:10:35
okay that's all great but what does it
  • 00:10:36
do for my my manager on a site somewhere
  • 00:10:38
what does it do for uh an operator in
  • 00:10:40
the field uh and and it's a really good
  • 00:10:42
challenge uh in projects or Solutions or
  • 00:10:45
Technology Solutions but in data too um
  • 00:10:48
and that's why things like last MBI have
  • 00:10:49
been so huge for us as I think like you
  • 00:10:51
talked about the the bip and bi is you
  • 00:10:54
    know interchangeable with you know
  • 00:10:55
    people talk about data visualization
  • 00:10:57
example there's you know hundreds of
  • 00:10:58
    different players a competitive market
  • 00:11:01
and you mentioned obviously outside the
  • 00:11:02
    visualization piece the integration
  • 00:11:04
element was important was there anything
  • 00:11:05
else that was super important to you
  • 00:11:07
when it came to the required
  • 00:11:09
capabilities for Wilson James yeah so I
  • 00:11:11
think Doo's app store has been a
  • 00:11:13
revelation for our for our users you
  • 00:11:15
know go in like you've got the Fitbit
  • 00:11:17
connector right so someone on my team
  • 00:11:19
has a Fitbit they just went in and just
  • 00:11:21
like connected with Fitbit and started
  • 00:11:23
playing around building a dashboard with
  • 00:11:24
their Fitbit data and I think that out
  • 00:11:26
of the box capability was huge for us we
  • 00:11:28
we started with a team W 18 months ago
  • 00:11:30
that was me um and that was you know
  • 00:11:32
we'll give you we'll give you budget to
  • 00:11:34
procure Domo if you think it's so
  • 00:11:35
important to us um go out and prove the
  • 00:11:37
value and if we look at now where we're
  • 00:11:40
a direct team of seven growing to be a
  • 00:11:42
larger team across the organization up
  • 00:11:45
Skilling people engaging in you know
  • 00:11:47
data literacy or friendships to bring up
  • 00:11:49
that Grassroots Talent we needed a
  • 00:11:51
    platform that suited an organization
  • 00:11:53
that didn't have a data background um we
  • 00:11:56
we gathered loads of it we engaged with
  • 00:11:58
it to an extent but we didn't have you
  • 00:12:01
know 20day analysts who were just ready
  • 00:12:04
for a platform we needed something that
  • 00:12:06
people who were keen and interested
  • 00:12:07
could go out and play with and deliver
  • 00:12:09
value in their in their service sector
  • 00:12:11
so I think that um easy to engage with
  • 00:12:14
part was really huge for us we tried a
  • 00:12:15
couple of other platforms um we've you
  • 00:12:17
know we've toyed with palvi we had
  • 00:12:19
isolated uses for for Tableau and um sap
  • 00:12:23
we were playing with a couple of their
  • 00:12:24
tools but they were so we found them so
  • 00:12:26
overly technical for our users that you
  • 00:12:29
end up with just really limited use
  • 00:12:30
cases so yeah I think a platform for the
  • 00:12:34
the people who are building content to
  • 00:12:36
be usable but then also something that
  • 00:12:38
is useful and understandable for people
  • 00:12:40
consuming data and that's where you know
  • 00:12:43
I I talked about it before but we often
  • 00:12:45
fall short and just how the platform
  • 00:12:47
felt for someone you know to have the
  • 00:12:49
Domo app on their phone and be able to
  • 00:12:51
jump on there in the morning and have a
  • 00:12:53
look at visuals that they could
  • 00:12:54
understand and they could engage with
  • 00:12:56
you know even the simple tool like um
  • 00:12:58
any anyone who's used to you know you
  • 00:13:00
can change how the visual looks even as
  • 00:13:02
a user so not an editor you can change
  • 00:13:04
it from a pie chart to a bar chart if
  • 00:13:05
you want that gave our users flexibility
  • 00:13:07
and how they consumed in consumed data
  • 00:13:10
yeah and then the final bit would just
  • 00:13:11
be the the outward capability so able to
  • 00:13:15
build out our own apis um we're we're
  • 00:13:18
toying at the moment with use case you
  • 00:13:20
know connecting to chbt to write a
  • 00:13:22
summary of a data set that sits in Domo
  • 00:13:24
and then is delivered as a teams message
  • 00:13:26
so you know the days of bar charts and
  • 00:13:30
pie charts I think you know uh for for
  • 00:13:33
many users that's great but for others
  • 00:13:34
they want a written report or they want
  • 00:13:36
to engage in a different way and we get
  • 00:13:37
    that flexibility yeah that's great
  • 00:13:39
that's great to and then obviously so
  • 00:13:40
you've gone through the process obiously
  • 00:13:41
you've done the evaluation uh you
  • 00:13:43
selected the tool that's that's right
  • 00:13:44
for Wilson James how did the the
  • 00:13:46
implementation roll out work on was
  • 00:13:48
there was there a strategy that you you
  • 00:13:50
had in place so you mentioned obviously
  • 00:13:51
you started with one person team and
  • 00:13:53
grew that out but what was kind of
  • 00:13:54
    Wilson James strategy to the
  • 00:13:56
implementation yeah so um in my in my
  • 00:13:59
    role I've I've launched multiple
  • 00:14:01
    platforms into our business for
  • 00:14:02
different things you know a new
  • 00:14:03
recruitment platform for example um and
  • 00:14:06
    mandated change is never successful
  • 00:14:09
change you know people don't like change
  • 00:14:11
no matter where they work and so most
  • 00:14:15
people know the sort of Simon synic you
  • 00:14:16
know adoption curve with your early
  • 00:14:18
adopters and your your late adopters and
  • 00:14:20
early majority and everything else and
  • 00:14:21
so for us the only way we knew this
  • 00:14:23
would work would be with targeted launch
  • 00:14:26
to early adopters and then organic
  • 00:14:29
demand Le growth so when we kicked off
  • 00:14:31
with Domo we identified a big top level
  • 00:14:34
use case that would demonstrate value to
  • 00:14:36
the SE site and and that was for the
  • 00:14:38
first time a kpi dashboard you know for
  • 00:14:40
our for our board that was fed every day
  • 00:14:43
rather than at the end of every month
  • 00:14:44
someone typing something into an Excel
  • 00:14:45
sheet and emailing out so that
  • 00:14:47
demonstrated value at the SE Suite level
  • 00:14:49
and then it was picking out a couple of
  • 00:14:50
    really problematic use cases that
  • 00:14:52
someone in our support function had you
  • 00:14:54
know I talk about in the case study just
  • 00:14:56
knowing how many people worked for us
  • 00:14:57
that day yeah um which seems Bonkers
  • 00:15:00
that was you know exactly um that was
  • 00:15:02
really problematic and you'd have to
  • 00:15:04
reach out to this one person in HR and
  • 00:15:06
you had to run the report and they could
  • 00:15:07
bring it together with three others and
  • 00:15:09
they could tell you we've currently got
  • 00:15:11
5,733 so actually being able to flash up
  • 00:15:13
to our business oh this how many people
  • 00:15:15
are working for us today and if you do
  • 00:15:16
it again tomorrow the number will be
  • 00:15:17
different because it updates on its own
  • 00:15:19
and then going out to our Ops teams
  • 00:15:21
    where they fed information into
  • 00:15:23
Recruitment and they didn't know where
  • 00:15:24
the candidates were in the process where
  • 00:15:26
they were in vetting and when they were
  • 00:15:27
going to get them out the other end so
  • 00:15:29
building out a recruitment pipeline View
  • 00:15:31
and this is how many candidates you've
  • 00:15:32
got where they're at in the journey and
  • 00:15:34
so just a couple of key strategically
  • 00:15:36
placed use cases demonstrated to even
  • 00:15:39
the slowest adopters the most resistant
  • 00:15:42
to change that okay this is really
  • 00:15:44
valuable for me and from there we've
  • 00:15:46
basically taken the view of um we are
  • 00:15:48
building up and we're about to launch
  • 00:15:49
organization wide after about a year of
  • 00:15:52
of of um organic growth um but before
  • 00:15:55
now it's been a case of if you request
  • 00:15:57
access to the platform you you've got it
  • 00:15:58
you know there's no doesn't matter what
  • 00:15:59
level you are what you're doing in the
  • 00:16:00
organization you can have it because
  • 00:16:01
you're Keen to get involved and our use
  • 00:16:03
cases have come from you know the ground
  • 00:16:05
up and the top down and they're so
  • 00:16:07
diverse if I look at you know if I look
  • 00:16:10
at the first few months it was who's
  • 00:16:11
creating all the content it was you Tom
  • 00:16:13
Giles or someone in my team building it
  • 00:16:15
and if I look now my team is barely a in
  • 00:16:17
the radar and it's absolutely people on
  • 00:16:19
sites it's people in our support
  • 00:16:21
functions who've taken it and are
  • 00:16:22
    building that and they're answering
  • 00:16:23
their own needs to the point where we
  • 00:16:25
have you know 300 dashboards now across
  • 00:16:27
the business Niche to real massive use
  • 00:16:31
cases for us um one of the things I show
  • 00:16:33
often is you like a word cloud of most
  • 00:16:35
popular dashboard in the last 30 days
  • 00:16:37
right and through the first few months
  • 00:16:38
of adoption you you just saw you know
  • 00:16:40
three massive words and then nothing
  • 00:16:42
else around the edge uh because no there
  • 00:16:45
was so little and it was only so
  • 00:16:46
targeted if you look now the work
  • 00:16:48
Cloud's almost all the same size because
  • 00:16:51
there's so much content and our users
  • 00:16:53
are just engaging with it in all
  • 00:16:54
different ways and it's so diverse and
  • 00:16:56
so that's been the the strategy and
  • 00:16:58
until now has been get people to come to
  • 00:17:00
us get that early adoption and get that
  • 00:17:02
feeling of sort of missing out you know
  • 00:17:04
oh people are looking at this I want I
  • 00:17:06
want that um how can I get access to
  • 00:17:08
that and have people coming to us uh and
  • 00:17:10
that's been really great you know I I
  • 00:17:11
think it's been our most successful
  • 00:17:13
    adopted platform um it's something
  • 00:17:16
people didn't know they needed until
  • 00:17:18
they got access to it and now they can't
  • 00:17:19
live without it uh I think the most
  • 00:17:23
popular login time with the platform is
  • 00:17:24
between 8:00 and 10: in the morning and
  • 00:17:26
the most popular day is Monday so if you
  • 00:17:29
want to talk about a data driven culture
  • 00:17:31
seeing that everyone logs in first thing
  • 00:17:32
in the morning engages with it that that
  • 00:17:34
is the biggest indicator I think of a
  • 00:17:36
data driven culture and fantastic um and
  • 00:17:38
of you talked a lot about kind of
  • 00:17:40
internal bi and how you being able to to
  • 00:17:42
kind of drive better data driven
  • 00:17:44
decisions internally what we're kind of
  • 00:17:46
seeing seeing across the board is that
  • 00:17:48
what organizations want to do how can
  • 00:17:49
they monetize their own data um and
  • 00:17:51
obviously one of the the big factors in
  • 00:17:52
Domo is is being able to take the data
  • 00:17:55
you have within your own platforms your
  • 00:17:56
own databases and sharing that with with
  • 00:17:58
clients and partners which is going to
  • 00:18:00
help you know um increase Revenue
  • 00:18:02
    opportunities customer retention wonder
  • 00:18:04
if you could just talk through kind of
  • 00:18:05
the journey you guys have been on in
  • 00:18:07
terms of extended analytics to your
  • 00:18:08
clients and partners yeah so when 18
  • 00:18:12
months ago when we started I think we we
  • 00:18:14
acknowledged that we were perhaps behind
  • 00:18:15
in our in our Marketplace in this space
  • 00:18:17
and it was we desperately need to do
  • 00:18:19
something to catch up and we and we and
  • 00:18:21
we got there but within 9 to 12 months
  • 00:18:25
we were there and we were already ahead
  • 00:18:27
of I think our tors in producing
  • 00:18:29
    internal analytics and driving value
  • 00:18:31
with that and then it opened up okay
  • 00:18:33
well great what else can we do uh and so
  • 00:18:36
for us it's we we've got sort of three
  • 00:18:39
three buckets you know one is Drive
  • 00:18:41
value into our own organization and you
  • 00:18:42
know I've talked a bit about that the
  • 00:18:44
second is how do we en enhance our
  • 00:18:46
current service propositions um and then
  • 00:18:48
the third is you know how do we just
  • 00:18:50
create completely new things that we've
  • 00:18:53
never done before but because of what we
  • 00:18:54
already do or we have access to we we
  • 00:18:56
can deliver and so that second one we
  • 00:18:58
really starting to explore now um and
  • 00:19:00
that's you know enhancing how we deliver
  • 00:19:02
our services and it's we have you know
  • 00:19:05
some really engaged clients if you as a
  • 00:19:08
supplier Wilson James you know our
  • 00:19:10
clients are Google and meta and big Tech
  • 00:19:14
names you know Snapchat and all those
  • 00:19:16
kind kind of people and they're
  • 00:19:18
    expecting from their security supplier
  • 00:19:20
    or their construction listic supplier
  • 00:19:22
more than I think the market is
  • 00:19:23
generally ready to do so you know last
  • 00:19:26
MBI in our Aviation Space is now
  • 00:19:28
    construction Logistics bace is putting
  • 00:19:29
screens up in operational areas that
  • 00:19:32
drive outcomes from data rather than
  • 00:19:34
looking at something at the end of the
  • 00:19:35
month and talking about what we've done
  • 00:19:37
today that is hugely valuable for our
  • 00:19:39
clients we had an airline uh comment
  • 00:19:42
that a global airline that what we were
  • 00:19:43
doing at he for example they'd never
  • 00:19:45
seen anywhere else in their Network and
  • 00:19:47
that was huge for us as an organization
  • 00:19:49
and and huge for our um our our client
  • 00:19:52
which is um is the airport so that kind
  • 00:19:55
of stuff is brilliant and then also
  • 00:19:57
leveraging with our partner manzer um
  • 00:19:59
    around sustainability yeah so in
  • 00:20:02
    construction Logistics We Gather huge
  • 00:20:03
amount of data around carbon emissions
  • 00:20:05
miles traveled for deliveries um and so
  • 00:20:07
it gives us a pretty unique insight into
  • 00:20:09
the carbon emissions of our of our
  • 00:20:11
customers and so taking that expertise
  • 00:20:13
and then you know our partner manz's
  • 00:20:16
    expertise in more broad sustainability
  • 00:20:18
reporting being able to offer our
  • 00:20:19
clients you know the problem everyone's
  • 00:20:21
talking about at the moment they never
  • 00:20:22
really want to deal with is about you
  • 00:20:23
know Net Zero and um everything else and
  • 00:20:26
    so we're already in a space with 2 50
  • 00:20:28
clients where we're talking to them
  • 00:20:29
about data and their biggest data
  • 00:20:31
problem is around sustainability and you
  • 00:20:33
know it's everyone everyone's Horizon so
  • 00:20:35
being able to build products out around
  • 00:20:37
you know how much carbon is your
  • 00:20:39
commuting Workforce creating yeah uh how
  • 00:20:42
much carbon is that combined with all
  • 00:20:44
    your deliveries and your construction
  • 00:20:45
sites and to give them their scope two
  • 00:20:47
scope three emissions it's just a huge
  • 00:20:49
commercial opportunity for us uh whether
  • 00:20:51
we give that away as part of a value ad
  • 00:20:52
or charge charge for that so got it okay
  • 00:20:55
perfect I think we've got a couple of
  • 00:20:56
questions um and then we see go out to
  • 00:20:58
the the audience but one thing just want
  • 00:21:00
to just touch upon is the cultural
  • 00:21:01
change you know um Implement a
  • 00:21:03
technology is a challenge itself and
  • 00:21:05
getting everyone to use a tool which
  • 00:21:06
seems like you've done a great job with
  • 00:21:08
Wilson James how's the shift been in
  • 00:21:10
mindset culturally in terms of going
  • 00:21:12
from you know where you were originally
  • 00:21:14
to where you guys are now from a cult
  • 00:21:16
perspective yeah so uh all of our
  • 00:21:19
meeting rooms have got Glass Walls right
  • 00:21:20
now head office um you walked past them
  • 00:21:23
a year ago and the screen was off and
  • 00:21:25
people were just chatting if I walk past
  • 00:21:27
now every single one is sharing ATO
  • 00:21:28
dashboard no matter what the topic of
  • 00:21:30
the meeting yeah and you know for me
  • 00:21:32
walking into the office in the morning
  • 00:21:33
and just seeing that um that that to me
  • 00:21:36
is cultural change that is people you
  • 00:21:38
know I'd love to be in a place where you
  • 00:21:40
say don't turn up to a meeting without
  • 00:21:41
data and I think you know that's a
  • 00:21:43
wonderful aspiration for us but to see
  • 00:21:46
Senior leaders in our business um who I
  • 00:21:48
would have never pegged as a data
  • 00:21:50
    specialist you know connecting the
  • 00:21:52
    laptop and showing dashboards and
  • 00:21:54
reporting to answer any question being
  • 00:21:57
on calls where people say say okay but
  • 00:21:58
so what does what do the stats say you
  • 00:22:00
know what and then oh what does that
  • 00:22:03
mean why why does it say that that is a
  • 00:22:06
completely different space for us to be
  • 00:22:07
in I mean our organization our sorry our
  • 00:22:10
service lines are you know our managers
  • 00:22:12
have done it for years and they know
  • 00:22:14
what they're doing if they've been
  • 00:22:15
running a security site they probably
  • 00:22:16
started as a security officer and
  • 00:22:17
they're supervisor and they're turn you
  • 00:22:19
know Duty manager and now they're a
  • 00:22:20
director of a huge Security Site and so
  • 00:22:22
they know what they're doing um but
  • 00:22:24
they're having they before they having
  • 00:22:25
to manage with their gut and I think the
  • 00:22:28
big thing for me is we never want to
  • 00:22:29
replace that I don't want to come to you
  • 00:22:30
and say no you're wrong the data says
  • 00:22:32
this so actually perhaps challenge your
  • 00:22:34
    own thought around why something
  • 00:22:35
happened or indeed think about a problem
  • 00:22:38
differently because you've got access to
  • 00:22:39
the data for the first time and we're
  • 00:22:41
seeing that all over the place and and
  • 00:22:43
that's wonderful and and for people
  • 00:22:46
listening in the audiences any advice
  • 00:22:48
you'd give to you know data and bi
  • 00:22:50
    professionals who are either starting
  • 00:22:52
that journey of implement new solution
  • 00:22:54
and changing the culture or kind of
  • 00:22:55
going through that Journey right now
  • 00:22:58
yeah I think um I gu Greg here from the
  • 00:23:02
data literacy Academy I know he's pres
  • 00:23:04
he's got a stand somewhere around there
  • 00:23:05
he said to me you know it's easier to
  • 00:23:06
teach business to sorry data to business
  • 00:23:08
people than business to data people and
  • 00:23:10
I think if you're trying to change a
  • 00:23:11
data culture you need to have business
  • 00:23:14
people in your data team um and you need
  • 00:23:16
to have business people contributing to
  • 00:23:18
your data strategy it's not enough to be
  • 00:23:20
a data person telling the business
  • 00:23:22
around what they need to know about data
  • 00:23:24
uh you know we're informed but we need
  • 00:23:26
to share that knowledge and and and get
  • 00:23:28
    that operational input cuz otherwise
  • 00:23:29
it's never going to land and you're
  • 00:23:31
always just going to be that you know
  • 00:23:32
person shouting your clouds about why
  • 00:23:34
you think you know best so you need to
  • 00:23:37
yeah I think just put the business first
  • 00:23:39
    in whatever organization you're
  • 00:23:40
operating in and understand the business
  • 00:23:42
problem truly before you try and deliver
  • 00:23:44
a data solution perfect thank you for
  • 00:23:46
that Tom I think we have time for maybe
  • 00:23:48
a couple of questions Tommy's also going
  • 00:23:50
to be um at the Domo stand as well after
  • 00:23:52
so if anyone uh wants to ask in person
  • 00:23:54
but is there any any questions from from
  • 00:23:57
the audience for for Tom feel free to
  • 00:23:59
put your hand up if there if there
  • 00:24:01
    are
  • 00:24:03
perfect if we've got a microphone out
  • 00:24:06
    there yeah
  • 00:24:09
    perfect
  • 00:24:14
just all right just out at the front
  • 00:24:17
there you go perfect thank you hi there
  • 00:24:20
uh it was great to hear everything
  • 00:24:22
you've mentioned Clos sorry can you hear
  • 00:24:25
me yeah I think so sorry um so I was
  • 00:24:28
just curious because you mentioned that
  • 00:24:30
there was all these dashboards that have
  • 00:24:31
been created these these main ones that
  • 00:24:34
sorry I can't hear you very well uh can
  • 00:24:36
you hear me better now yeah I think you
  • 00:24:37
have to hold it really close oh real
  • 00:24:38
close Okay cool so um uh I was just
  • 00:24:42
    curious who are the
  • 00:24:44
individuals who are the individuals that
  • 00:24:46
    are creating those particular dashboards
  • 00:24:49
I'm curious about the composition of
  • 00:24:50
your data team um I would imagine you've
  • 00:24:53
you've got a a wide variety of data
  • 00:24:56
analysts and data Engineers but like
  • 00:24:59
when you in in the in the terms of
  • 00:25:02
self-service um are you expecting the
  • 00:25:06
    specific Business site that people
  • 00:25:07
within the business teams within the
  • 00:25:09
    business lines actually creating
  • 00:25:10
dashboards or are you is it a whole
  • 00:25:13
massive team of data analyst what does
  • 00:25:15
that look like we are absolutely not a
  • 00:25:16
massive team of data analyst so uh we
  • 00:25:18
are very small in our internal Central
  • 00:25:21
capability and all of our essentially
  • 00:25:24
data capability until very recently has
  • 00:25:26
    been within operating areas where
  • 00:25:28
there's just someone with a flare for it
  • 00:25:30
so the key thing for us was to go out
  • 00:25:31
and find those people in the in the
  • 00:25:33
beginning and say we are doing this you
  • 00:25:35
can have anything you like you know
  • 00:25:37
clearly well managed in a data
  • 00:25:39
governance framework but so if you see a
  • 00:25:40
use case and you want to do that we will
  • 00:25:42
support you and you know I I did mention
  • 00:25:44
    earlier but the whole self-learning
  • 00:25:46
piece in Domo the data uh Domo
  • 00:25:48
university has been huge for us so the
  • 00:25:51
biggest content creators for us was a HR
  • 00:25:53
    business partner um an
  • 00:25:56
IT guy I I know what his title was but
  • 00:25:58
he just you know he' built fresh
  • 00:26:00
ticketing dashboards in fresh and he had
  • 00:26:02
done all this sort of stuff um and a
  • 00:26:04
finance a director in finance who just
  • 00:26:06
loved it and and went out there and so
  • 00:26:08
our top three content creators be
  • 00:26:10
absolutely not data people um so that it
  • 00:26:14
has been organic and in that that people
  • 00:26:17
put their hand up and say oh can I have
  • 00:26:18
access can I be an editor can I build
  • 00:26:20
content and then how do we support
  • 00:26:21
people through that so we've run a
  • 00:26:22
fortnightly um editors group where we
  • 00:26:25
share best practice we've written some
  • 00:26:26
or we writing out some best practice
  • 00:26:28
guides and then you know just the chat
  • 00:26:31
really where oh I'm trying to do this
  • 00:26:32
how do I do it um and that's where we've
  • 00:26:34
seen so okay what that's done is it's
  • 00:26:37
created a huge amount of content and a
  • 00:26:39
huge amount of value recognition in a
  • 00:26:41
business but but it has been all over
  • 00:26:43
the place so it has its pluses and minus
  • 00:26:45
where we're at now is trying to tidy
  • 00:26:46
that up professionalize that um and you
  • 00:26:49
know the Domo certification and that
  • 00:26:51
kind of thing that we're doing really
  • 00:26:52
cements that but so yeah in terms of
  • 00:26:55
getting out there getting it fast um and
  • 00:26:57
    getting engagement I think that's
  • 00:26:59
critical as having you know I talked
  • 00:27:00
about it nonata people delivering data
  • 00:27:03
um yeah right right and also just
  • 00:27:05
another followup question in regards to
  • 00:27:07
those um I guess you can describe them
  • 00:27:09
as super users right um would you say
  • 00:27:12
that they um I I would imagine they
  • 00:27:14
    would have to undergo particular
  • 00:27:15
training so that they can create those
  • 00:27:17
particular dashboards what what what was
  • 00:27:19
like the training what the training look
  • 00:27:20
like within your organization so we uh
  • 00:27:23
adapted the one of the Domo university
  • 00:27:25
courses which is a self-taught course
  • 00:27:27
online branded it and took out the bits
  • 00:27:29
that weren't relevant to us got people
  • 00:27:30
to do that themselves demonstrated some
  • 00:27:32
proficiency gave them access to some
  • 00:27:35
data they already had access to already
  • 00:27:36
so there weren't concerns around you
  • 00:27:38
know and then we engaged with them
  • 00:27:39
    throughout the process and just
  • 00:27:40
supported them really so you know it's
  • 00:27:41
    been an organic
  • 00:27:44
and agile I'll call it because um I
  • 00:27:47
don't want to talk about the investment
  • 00:27:49
in my team e months ago but so it's been
  • 00:27:51
a self-d delivered model um to the point
  • 00:27:53
where we've now demonstrated so much
  • 00:27:54
value the team has grown immensely
  • 00:27:55
because the business recognizes that and
  • 00:27:57
wants to inv more cool thank you very
  • 00:27:59
much cheers perfect well I think we're
  • 00:28:01
we're we're done for time um getting the
  • 00:28:03
no from back but thank you everyone for
  • 00:28:04
for joining um yeah thank you as well
  • 00:28:06
    Tom appreciate your time
