- 00:00:01hi can you quickly introduce yourself
- 00:00:04yeah hi uh my name is Arun Krishna Das I
- 00:00:07finished my PhD in uh May 2023 from MIT
- 00:00:11I did it in the area of computational
- 00:00:13Acoustics uh in mechanical engineering
- 00:00:15department and currently work as a
- 00:00:17senior research engineer at 3M for the
- 00:00:18last one and a half years in uh doing a
- 00:00:21little bit of uh AI neuros symbolic
- 00:00:24reasoning uh and Acoustics for 3M
- 00:00:26products
- 00:00:30my name is rajat dander uh I've done my
- 00:00:32btech and mtech from IIT Madras in 2018
- 00:00:36and post that I did my PhD from Purdue
- 00:00:38in the field of computation fluid
- 00:00:40mechanics and currently uh I am the
- 00:00:43co-founder uh of uara Technologies and
- 00:00:46we work at the intersection of AI and
- 00:00:50education hi my name is Raj dander I'm
- 00:00:53the twin brother of rajat as you can see
- 00:00:57um I also graduated from Mi Madras 2017
- 00:01:00um patch of mechanical engineering and
- 00:01:03then finished my PhD at MIT in
- 00:01:05computational science came back to India
- 00:01:08in 2022 and now along with rajat and
- 00:01:11shat I'm the third co-founder of viu
- 00:01:17labs and I'm shat panat I also one of
- 00:01:21the co-founders of vua I graduated from
- 00:01:24MIT in 2022 November and came back to
- 00:01:27India immediately after uh we we have
- 00:01:30all known each other since 2012 2013 so
- 00:01:33almost like 12 13 years now since our
- 00:01:36undergraduate at I Madras so maybe we
- 00:01:39can discuss a little bit about our
- 00:01:41career trajectories and why we decided
- 00:01:43to do certain things and um maybe you
- 00:01:47have done things differently than the
- 00:01:48three of us you are still working in the
- 00:01:50US after your PhD and we are not so
- 00:01:52maybe we can anchor our questions around
- 00:01:55uh our decision to stay back versus our
- 00:01:57decision to come back to India so
- 00:02:02um maybe I can start with both of you
- 00:02:05you you have been back back to India
- 00:02:07since last two years do you regret
- 00:02:09coming
- 00:02:11back so yeah it has been uh around two
- 00:02:14and a half years uh since we came back
- 00:02:16to India and um I would say initially it
- 00:02:20was it was a bit of a struggle to get
- 00:02:22used to
- 00:02:24uh like a lot of things we will discuss
- 00:02:26about that eventually but right now we
- 00:02:29are at a stage where things are going
- 00:02:31quite smoothly and there is a sense of
- 00:02:33satisfaction and peace which is there
- 00:02:36mentally and that is like at a very
- 00:02:39subconscious level but overall I would
- 00:02:41say I don't regret the decision of
- 00:02:44coming back to India at
- 00:02:46all yeah yeah I would say the same thing
- 00:02:49so regret is not at all an emotion which
- 00:02:51is there since the last one and half two
- 00:02:54years ever since we came came to India
- 00:02:58it's like we decided Ed to do this and
- 00:03:00then regret was never never there at all
- 00:03:03it's like whatever disadvantages or were
- 00:03:06there or whatever drawbacks were there
- 00:03:09you kind of just assume it and uh try to
- 00:03:13overcome that so yeah among all other
- 00:03:16feelings regret never came into my mind
- 00:03:20at all what about
- 00:03:24you yeah I also don't have regrets
- 00:03:27that you know if I were to time travel I
- 00:03:30would take a different decision I don't
- 00:03:31think so but uh of course there are
- 00:03:34smaller scale things which I miss uh
- 00:03:37like cleanliness or uh discipline in the
- 00:03:40traffic air
- 00:03:42quality um
- 00:03:45maybe better quality food things like
- 00:03:48that which uh are maybe easier to get in
- 00:03:53more developed places but other than
- 00:03:56that overall my decision of coming back
- 00:03:58to India I have not regretted not not
- 00:03:59only that I have I'm probably the
- 00:04:01happiest in my life right now so I I am
- 00:04:04absolutely making it work out um so Arun
- 00:04:08you are still working in the US so I
- 00:04:10have two questions to you if you had
- 00:04:13come back to India to right after your
- 00:04:15PhD for maybe doing research or maybe
- 00:04:18working in a company whatever it was
- 00:04:20would you have regretted it plus now
- 00:04:23that you are working in the US let's say
- 00:04:25you work there for 30 35 years and maybe
- 00:04:29when you 60 or something would you
- 00:04:31regret not taking the decision of you
- 00:04:34know coming back to
- 00:04:37India so the first question uh yes so
- 00:04:41I'm uh just to give some like numbers
- 00:04:44and data I have looked at like so I work
- 00:04:47in a Fortune 100 company as I mentioned
- 00:04:49earlier uh similar kind of job in India
- 00:04:53for a specialized person like me is the
- 00:04:55area of computational Acoustics which is
- 00:04:56still respected and and stuff in the US
- 00:04:59um
- 00:05:00I don't find similar quality of uh
- 00:05:03salary here even if you account for the
- 00:05:07uh cost parity and
- 00:05:10differences um I am able to easily save
- 00:05:14uh individually in excess of like five
- 00:05:18roughly $5,000 per month uh which is
- 00:05:21like four lakhs per month um this is
- 00:05:24after you have certain amounts that go
- 00:05:25into your 401k that's for your like you
- 00:05:27know lifetime savings post retire and
- 00:05:30and insurance and all of those things
- 00:05:32which which are basically Necessities in
- 00:05:34the
- 00:05:35US so that uh kind of tells me it's
- 00:05:38always going to be a struggle unless I
- 00:05:39do something like you guys which is a
- 00:05:41startup and individual uh control of
- 00:05:44what you're doing then probably yes uh
- 00:05:46India could work but uh and then also my
- 00:05:51wife works in the area of as a data
- 00:05:52scientist for her it may work I know
- 00:05:54like Amazon and certain big companies do
- 00:05:56pay quite a bit uh accounting for the
- 00:05:58parity differences you can see save
- 00:05:59quite a bit but I am like a specialized
- 00:06:02person even though I'm like
- 00:06:03transitioning into certain of these
- 00:06:04fields right now so may not be the best
- 00:06:07fit for me in that in that sense uh and
- 00:06:09the second question about like staying
- 00:06:11there for like 30 plus years would I
- 00:06:13regret coming back to India I want to
- 00:06:15like post it in the form of additional
- 00:06:17yeah additional questions right now I'm
- 00:06:20sure like say 30 years there that's an
- 00:06:23excess of close to like uh like
- 00:06:26individually saving I would say roughly
- 00:06:28my estimates place like between 5 to $10
- 00:06:31million uh that's a significant amount
- 00:06:34of money for like uh that can like set
- 00:06:37you on to relax for the rest of your
- 00:06:38life with your grandkids and stuff and
- 00:06:40this is basically me enjoying a pretty
- 00:06:42relaxed work life balance and everything
- 00:06:44so good quality of life that sets you on
- 00:06:46a decent path I know that may or may not
- 00:06:48be sufficient for certain people who are
- 00:06:49really ambitious but for a large section
- 00:06:52of the population that's sufficient uh
- 00:06:54and the the question I want to POs to
- 00:06:56you guys is what about the other things
- 00:06:58I'm not regretting this as of this
- 00:06:59moment I don't know if I'll regret it in
- 00:07:0130 years uh but my wife says so she and
- 00:07:05I kind of not fight but debate with each
- 00:07:07other she is someone who wants to come
- 00:07:09back to India I'm someone who pulls her
- 00:07:11away from India uh and the things she
- 00:07:13says is like family uh food the fact
- 00:07:17that food as in Indian food is what we
- 00:07:18like so obviously access then the
- 00:07:20ability to get people to help in
- 00:07:22different context that you almost cannot
- 00:07:24afford in the US you know you cannot
- 00:07:26afford people who will cook food for you
- 00:07:27at ,000 per month because that takes a
- 00:07:29significant amount of your savings away
- 00:07:31uh and uh these are things which she
- 00:07:34says which which are very valuable for
- 00:07:35her but things which I say is we have a
- 00:07:37puy quality of life with the puppy is
- 00:07:40better there uh like you said Road and
- 00:07:43traffic cleanliness uh because I have
- 00:07:46like allergies and stuff every time I
- 00:07:47come to India which I do not experience
- 00:07:48their air quality index and stuff and
- 00:07:50diversity of thought this is something
- 00:07:52which I do not know maybe in India with
- 00:07:54the current generation it and all of
- 00:07:55those things it's going to be like
- 00:07:57possible to have very good of thought
- 00:08:00but I have a team where one is from the
- 00:08:01Middle East one is from China One is
- 00:08:02from the US one is from India and many
- 00:08:04are Americans that naturally gives
- 00:08:06diversity of thought from the fact that
- 00:08:07they're all born and brought up
- 00:08:09differently so I wonder whether that
- 00:08:11will that I will get here I enjoy that
- 00:08:14like people who tell things like they
- 00:08:15had fought War they had experienced Wars
- 00:08:17in Greece or people who said that they
- 00:08:19have migrated from China and then
- 00:08:20experienced a lot of troubles to get
- 00:08:22their green card in the US these are
- 00:08:23discussions which like enrich your
- 00:08:25overall thought process so that's like a
- 00:08:27question I want to ask you guys like how
- 00:08:29about
- 00:08:30uh Pros which my wife said which I keep
- 00:08:32countering because she's my wife I can
- 00:08:33counter but the things which I said are
- 00:08:35like genuine concerns that I have five
- 00:08:38of those things like what are your
- 00:08:39thoughts on any of
- 00:08:41those uh yeah maybe I can uh take one or
- 00:08:45two of those concerns yeah so uh with
- 00:08:48respect to help and support from the
- 00:08:51closed ones I would say that that is
- 00:08:54definitely a positive and
- 00:08:57uh how it helped help is that like let's
- 00:09:00say as a business you're going to look
- 00:09:03for let's say a co-working space or or
- 00:09:07many other things that you want to do
- 00:09:08there is always a team in India I feel
- 00:09:11that that helps you uh achieve that
- 00:09:14particular thing and there is a sense of
- 00:09:17support that you feel uh for every
- 00:09:21decision that you are that you are
- 00:09:23taking and uh another example I can give
- 00:09:27is that uh recently we move to a new
- 00:09:30apartment and that whole uh like the
- 00:09:33entire Logistics of like setting up the
- 00:09:35furniture and making sure that
- 00:09:38everything works functionally then
- 00:09:40cooking Etc because of the people around
- 00:09:44that whole process was made so much
- 00:09:46easier that we could relax and focus on
- 00:09:49the work and growing our business and
- 00:09:51this is something which gives me a lot
- 00:09:54of Peace whenever I'm working so that is
- 00:09:57a positive regarding the diversity of of
- 00:09:59thought I I definitely understand what
- 00:10:02you mean and I I used to interact with
- 00:10:05people from different nationalities in
- 00:10:07the US here that is that is missing to
- 00:10:10some
- 00:10:11extent uh especially when let's say you
- 00:10:14have employees who are working with you
- 00:10:17you cannot be yourself when you're
- 00:10:20discussing with them you can discuss
- 00:10:22about certain things but you cannot
- 00:10:24truly express your opinions because it's
- 00:10:27like finally your objective is to
- 00:10:29you know get get work done from from
- 00:10:33those people so that is something which
- 00:10:36which I feel is missing from Office life
- 00:10:39that largely it is not like a discussion
- 00:10:42Le environment but it's more like like a
- 00:10:44top down or a
- 00:10:46hierarchical environment sometimes not
- 00:10:49not
- 00:10:50always but yeah that is that is
- 00:10:52definitely something
- 00:10:54which which is maybe a negative of
- 00:10:57living here with respect to cleanliness
- 00:10:59we have identified areas around our
- 00:11:02apartment and and co-working which are
- 00:11:04which are pretty clean and we avoid
- 00:11:06going to areas which are not very clean
- 00:11:08unless there is a business visit so uh
- 00:11:12that is something which can be optimized
- 00:11:14I think it takes some time but
- 00:11:15eventually you can find a niche area
- 00:11:18even in India where the cleanliness is
- 00:11:20kind of comparable to us not with
- 00:11:22respect to air quality index I think
- 00:11:24that will never be comparable even in
- 00:11:27the long term but with respect to in
- 00:11:29general hygiene of the place Etc and
- 00:11:32then facilities can always find a
- 00:11:35niche yeah maybe Raj and Shri you want
- 00:11:41to yeah so diversity of thoughts I would
- 00:11:45say I had a better experience from the
- 00:11:47US people from
- 00:11:49different cultures and different
- 00:11:52countries uh who probably won't get
- 00:11:54offended on
- 00:11:57speaking your mind in a in a way which
- 00:11:59is not personal but more like you can
- 00:12:01speak different ideas and people still
- 00:12:03be willing to listen and debate with you
- 00:12:05that is
- 00:12:06maybe um first of all I haven't
- 00:12:09attempted those debates but uh I can see
- 00:12:12that many family members or close people
- 00:12:15who can get emotionally agitated when
- 00:12:17you bring up certain topics for
- 00:12:20debate um so diversity of thoughts is in
- 00:12:24uh I would say when you are more in a
- 00:12:26population from like so we live in Pune
- 00:12:29so most of the people are either from
- 00:12:32Pune or uh people whom we know closely
- 00:12:34from uh similar places as us so the
- 00:12:39diversity of culture and thoughts are a
- 00:12:41bit less but I also understand that in
- 00:12:44India there are all types of cultures
- 00:12:46and all types of so if you travel a lot
- 00:12:48in India maybe you will get to
- 00:12:49experience a lot more different cultures
- 00:12:52but if you are primarily staying in one
- 00:12:54place uh probably you don't get to you
- 00:12:56don't get to experience that that much
- 00:12:58as being in one place in the US where
- 00:13:00people come from all parts of the world
- 00:13:02if you are in a city um the thing that
- 00:13:05bothers me the most is uh
- 00:13:08cleanliness and lack of discipline in
- 00:13:11the traffic
- 00:13:14um people you can easily see that when
- 00:13:17there is a traffic jam people the the
- 00:13:20wiser thing to do is like just wait
- 00:13:24for the road ahead you to clear a little
- 00:13:26bit leave some space And if every every
- 00:13:29one did that it would clear very fast
- 00:13:30but no one does that so traffic takes a
- 00:13:32lot of time sometimes to clear up so
- 00:13:34these kinds of things but it's also like
- 00:13:37the Nash equilibrium or something right
- 00:13:40in Game Theory like people uh I guess
- 00:13:42that's what it is right people take
- 00:13:44selfit selfish decisions and overall the
- 00:13:48outcome ends up being bad for everyone
- 00:13:50so probably there is no solution for
- 00:13:53that um I really like the I think
- 00:13:59if you can manage to get homade food
- 00:14:03which are a bit organic and stuff like
- 00:14:05that Indian food is very balanced and I
- 00:14:08think it's very healthy uh not if you
- 00:14:10are eating from restaurants and not if
- 00:14:12you are ordering from SGI tomato but
- 00:14:16when I look at my grandmother she she
- 00:14:19has been eating the same kind of food
- 00:14:21has never had access to restaurant food
- 00:14:24or online ordered food home homecooked
- 00:14:27food probably not rich in protein mostly
- 00:14:29maybe carbohydrates but still has had a
- 00:14:32pretty she's still I think she's 84 or
- 00:14:3685 or something like that uh very you
- 00:14:39know very good health with respect to
- 00:14:41her age so and the kind of food that she
- 00:14:44eats I think is overall very good and I
- 00:14:47think if everyone in India could manage
- 00:14:50to eat like that home homemade
- 00:14:52food uh taste personally taste wise and
- 00:14:56healthwise I find it better than what is
- 00:14:59available in the US in in the US
- 00:15:01everything is Big portions are big
- 00:15:03calorie density is more everything is
- 00:15:06Big so maybe it's it's well suited
- 00:15:09for people who are from the us but as an
- 00:15:13Indian whose whose body is maybe 20%
- 00:15:16smaller maybe I don't need that big
- 00:15:17portions I think my body is better
- 00:15:19suited for Indian kind of food so that
- 00:15:21part I don't regret uh but I don't know
- 00:15:23if that was one of the Five Points which
- 00:15:25you mentioned you mentioned Dei
- 00:15:26cleanliness air quality air quality yeah
- 00:15:28for sure uh in many parts of India I
- 00:15:31don't have air quality issue like Kerala
- 00:15:33I don't have much issue I I like the air
- 00:15:36quality I like the surroundings but in
- 00:15:39places where there is a lot of traffic
- 00:15:41there is a lot of dust Rising especially
- 00:15:42if you are walking along the food path I
- 00:15:46I don't like it in Delhi gooda I'll
- 00:15:48probably won't visit those places or
- 00:15:50I'll try to stay away from uh highly air
- 00:15:53air polluted I also have breathing
- 00:15:54issues sometimes so I don't like to be
- 00:15:57near places where there is a air quality
- 00:15:59index
- 00:16:00problem um
- 00:16:03and yeah probably yeah the five things
- 00:16:07that you were saying but five things I
- 00:16:08said but three of those were what you
- 00:16:10discussed City of thought and
- 00:16:12cleanliness and uh traffic yeah one more
- 00:16:17thing I felt which could be improved in
- 00:16:19India is accountability of people let's
- 00:16:21say somebody does a crime or someone
- 00:16:22involves in a
- 00:16:25um a road traffic accident or something
- 00:16:28like that there is very much much lack
- 00:16:29of accountability uh it's it's uh people
- 00:16:33people don't get punished by being held
- 00:16:37accountable for what they do maybe
- 00:16:39because the uh judicial system is slow
- 00:16:43or overburdened because there is a lot
- 00:16:45of population lot of issues to take care
- 00:16:47of uh I I'm I'm just wishfully thinking
- 00:16:51if that was better um but yeah I would I
- 00:16:55would agree with most of the issues
- 00:16:56which you raised as points uh
- 00:16:59to my defense I would say still those
- 00:17:02are points which are not the make or
- 00:17:06break factor in my decision to come back
- 00:17:08it was purely based on I would say
- 00:17:09freedom like I don't want to work for
- 00:17:13someone and I don't want to play the
- 00:17:16game of H1B Visa or green card I don't
- 00:17:18want to stay at the edge of always on
- 00:17:21the edge thinking that if I lose the job
- 00:17:23in 60 days I have to find another job
- 00:17:24otherwise I'll be I'll have to leave I
- 00:17:27recently talked to one of my
- 00:17:29acquaintances who had to leave
- 00:17:31after uh his Masters because he could
- 00:17:34not get hn B Visa I mean he yeah he
- 00:17:37could not find a job within certain
- 00:17:38number of
- 00:17:39days um I'm sure you also know some
- 00:17:42friends who probably got laid off and
- 00:17:43then had to come back by leaving
- 00:17:45everything behind so so I find that to
- 00:17:48be like um I find that to be equivalent
- 00:17:52of treatment like a second class citizen
- 00:17:54uh which I don't like that much um so
- 00:17:57although India has lot of issues I feel
- 00:17:59like it gives me a good footing where I
- 00:18:02I won't get deported or I won't get sent
- 00:18:04away to some other place um if I don't
- 00:18:08have a job I can be here I can take my
- 00:18:11own time to build things and and it
- 00:18:13makes me feel like uh uh this this is my
- 00:18:17home and I can I can be here I can go to
- 00:18:19my parents house or someone else's house
- 00:18:21I can stay there uh I feel like number
- 00:18:23of options for me personally is higher
- 00:18:25here and but if I were an employee in a
- 00:18:30maybe um I would have thought us as a
- 00:18:33better option because of higher pay and
- 00:18:35rest of the things that come with it
- 00:18:36come with it but from the point of view
- 00:18:38of doing what you want to do by running
- 00:18:42a startup to me India looks
- 00:18:45more um much better what about you Raj
- 00:18:49your
- 00:18:51thoughts oh yeah so uh yeah I agree that
- 00:18:55there are issues for sure but in my
- 00:18:57thinking it's like uh you have certain
- 00:18:59goals um and I a very goal oriented
- 00:19:02person and that goal for me is very
- 00:19:04clear that ultimately after 10 to 15
- 00:19:06years uh we want to create some sort of
- 00:19:09an AI Institute which would have five
- 00:19:11floors or 10 floors one floor would be
- 00:19:14data analysis one floor would be natural
- 00:19:16language processing one would be large
- 00:19:17language models one would be AGI maybe
- 00:19:20top floor is Agi so it's like that
- 00:19:23research lab in India which produces
- 00:19:24highest quality research um best quality
- 00:19:29courses and talent from all over the
- 00:19:31world similar to Labs like open AI um
- 00:19:34research coming out of meta research
- 00:19:36coming out of Nvidia my vision is that
- 00:19:39why can't India have such type of
- 00:19:42worldclass AI Labs which produ
- 00:19:44consistently produced high quality AI
- 00:19:46research and now that this has come into
- 00:19:49Limelight a bit more after deep seek and
- 00:19:51the discussion has started very
- 00:19:53seriously like why can't India have
- 00:19:55their own foundational models but this
- 00:19:57is just the tip of the I I think if you
- 00:19:59look at the problem more closely it's
- 00:20:02like it's a systemic problem um Indian
- 00:20:05phds go to the US they work for us
- 00:20:07companies because of better
- 00:20:09opportunities so such type of
- 00:20:11Institutions are not there in India so
- 00:20:14to start something like this we need to
- 00:20:16contribute from the roots from the
- 00:20:17school system from the college system to
- 00:20:19the university system you need to build
- 00:20:21courses you need to uh raise a culture
- 00:20:24of awareness with respect to research in
- 00:20:27students in college students
- 00:20:29that's exactly what we are doing I feel
- 00:20:31and the goal of reaching that that
- 00:20:34Vision that for me Shadows everything
- 00:20:36else so cleanliness issues yeah it's
- 00:20:38there but uh there are problems right
- 00:20:41but I want to reach my goal and I want
- 00:20:43to reach there in 5 years or 10 years
- 00:20:46time so all these issues are not even in
- 00:20:48my thought honestly because being in
- 00:20:51India I can do everything which takes me
- 00:20:55to that goal I don't see a need to go to
- 00:20:56the US or Europe or anywhere else
- 00:20:59why would I be in the US if I want to
- 00:21:00make a foundational llm model based out
- 00:21:03of India or if I want to start an open
- 00:21:06AI in
- 00:21:08India why would I be in the US right so
- 00:21:11issues are there for sure like roads are
- 00:21:13not clean uh sometimes people are not
- 00:21:16disciplined they are not held
- 00:21:17accountable as you discussed but it's
- 00:21:20like the the the fire for creating that
- 00:21:22vision is so high that everything is
- 00:21:24like like very small like I don't even
- 00:21:27see these problem
- 00:21:30so I think it's also about Vision right
- 00:21:33what you want and where you are right
- 00:21:35now and and also about priorities maybe
- 00:21:39I get it some people have priorities
- 00:21:40that they want to stay in a place which
- 00:21:42is clean have have a stable life um 9
- 00:21:45to5 job but that's not my priority my
- 00:21:48thing is to get to that place after 10
- 00:21:50years
- 00:21:52and okay to get there what's the best
- 00:21:55thing I could do right now viu Labs is
- 00:21:57probably the best thing I could do right
- 00:21:59now we are doing it
- 00:22:01so there are issues but I don't think
- 00:22:04about them at all honestly in the last
- 00:22:06one year I would have spent maybe 0.1%
- 00:22:10thinking about whether I should be in
- 00:22:11the India or us I think people should
- 00:22:14just whereever they are they should just
- 00:22:17just attain their Vision just work hard
- 00:22:20get what you
- 00:22:22want yeah so that is about the first
- 00:22:25point second point is with respect to
- 00:22:26openness right uh um to that I have
- 00:22:29experienced actually because if you look
- 00:22:32with respect to marriage right now uh in
- 00:22:35Indian culture you are expected to marry
- 00:22:37after at a certain age and I am also
- 00:22:40feeling that pressure at this moment
- 00:22:41honestly where the society just bends
- 00:22:44you into their will that okay if you
- 00:22:47don't marry you you're like an outcast
- 00:22:49and the openness to thought is not there
- 00:22:51you have to marry by 32 33 this would
- 00:22:54not be there if I were in the US for
- 00:22:55sure but it's not a break make break
- 00:22:58point um I can deal with my family who
- 00:23:01who is putting this pressure and I can
- 00:23:03convince them I can be in the system and
- 00:23:06deal with these points but I also faced
- 00:23:08a similar situation in Boston when
- 00:23:10someone told me to go back to
- 00:23:13Egypt and that when I when I heard that
- 00:23:16that is something I cannot deal with it
- 00:23:18feels like you are not welcome in this
- 00:23:21country right whereas here people say
- 00:23:23things more out of a sense of care like
- 00:23:25you get married because it's a good
- 00:23:26thing for you but in the US they say it
- 00:23:29more out of a sense of like okay you
- 00:23:31leave this country and I faced this one
- 00:23:34or two times not more um but even if you
- 00:23:38hear this once or twice you feel like
- 00:23:40what what am I doing here why don't I be
- 00:23:43with my own people right so openness is
- 00:23:45there in my lab also there are people
- 00:23:47from Morocco people from Europe India
- 00:23:49Korea China great conversations great
- 00:23:52perspectives but overall you feel like
- 00:23:54you're living in a country where you are
- 00:23:55not welcome and I know
- 00:23:59other other of my friends when they hear
- 00:24:01these things they just leave it and
- 00:24:0399.5% of their life is fine but that
- 00:24:06point. 5% I was not able to
- 00:24:08forget and that that I think it's like
- 00:24:12yeah so openness I
- 00:24:16feel what did you experience something
- 00:24:19like that in the US around that you were
- 00:24:22not welcome here or something like
- 00:24:26that yeah we have uh I mean us by
- 00:24:30default especially New England I would
- 00:24:31say are do have racist people in in
- 00:24:35certain uh parts of it like internal New
- 00:24:37England we have faced it Raj like in a
- 00:24:40restaurant and we were not given a seat
- 00:24:42once and you know they gave it to
- 00:24:43somebody else and stuff um so I'm not
- 00:24:45denying that but like I don't experience
- 00:24:48it most of the time and then there's
- 00:24:50also another segment of certain blue
- 00:24:52States like Minnesota and and
- 00:24:55Massachusetts also blue and at least
- 00:24:57Boston area and I mean blue I mean like
- 00:24:59uh Democrats versus conservative
- 00:25:03Republicans so I have my current company
- 00:25:05where I have like really good support
- 00:25:08from people who want genuinely to get me
- 00:25:11a green card they willing to write
- 00:25:13letters even from really high level like
- 00:25:15Executive Vice Presidents and uh CTO and
- 00:25:19almost like so I feel like they value
- 00:25:22the immigrants at least the intelligent
- 00:25:25educated uh folks working in Fortune 100
- 00:25:27companies which then makes you feel
- 00:25:29welcome in that way uh but like shat
- 00:25:32said yes I do I think about the fact
- 00:25:34that you know I have an H1B Visa
- 00:25:36appointment coming in a month uh whether
- 00:25:39uh you know if it could go south when I
- 00:25:40may not be able to go back to the US I
- 00:25:43have my family there like right now my
- 00:25:45wife and my puppy and stuff uh does that
- 00:25:48cause stress yeah sure it does uh but
- 00:25:52I'm pretty sure like the people who are
- 00:25:53watching this video
- 00:25:5595% would probably be closer to me than
- 00:25:58to Raj in terms of having a vision or a
- 00:26:00focus that
- 00:26:01basically uh occludes all of these all
- 00:26:05of these things that you're noticing in
- 00:26:06front of you and just go towards your
- 00:26:07vision like for me personally I like my
- 00:26:11projects but I also think about all of
- 00:26:13these other things uh and the fact that
- 00:26:16this will enable me to have a good
- 00:26:17salary and a good savings 30 years from
- 00:26:20now so I'm thinking all of those things
- 00:26:22I'm not like so Vision focused that I
- 00:26:24can ignore all of those things which is
- 00:26:26why on a day-to-day basis
- 00:26:28uh us still works for me because the
- 00:26:30pros outweigh the cons uh but for some
- 00:26:34people like Raj the cons outweigh the
- 00:26:35pros so I don't think there's like a
- 00:26:37correct solution to everything I'm
- 00:26:38pretty sure my wife is not exactly happy
- 00:26:40every day in the US one of the main
- 00:26:42reasons she says and which I can like
- 00:26:45maybe something we haven't spoken so far
- 00:26:46is um the Social Circle us is obviously
- 00:26:51very well known that everybody Minds
- 00:26:53their own business so you don't know
- 00:26:54who's staying next to you or you don't
- 00:26:56know who's sitting next to you but like
- 00:26:57my closest friends are on this bench for
- 00:26:59example like we come on a trip every
- 00:27:00time we come here my wife misses her
- 00:27:03friends who are also from India so the
- 00:27:04lack of a Social Circle is sometimes One
- 00:27:07Singular Factor people just come back uh
- 00:27:09may not necessarily say family uh so for
- 00:27:12her that's a that's a real big con uh
- 00:27:15but data also shows that I don't know if
- 00:27:18I'm supposed to say this but if I come
- 00:27:19back uh you know there also like
- 00:27:22especially with two states and
- 00:27:23everything there could be more societal
- 00:27:25and family issues if I come back to
- 00:27:27India data shows that as as well so the
- 00:27:29so I will pull her back because of that
- 00:27:31but uh that's something we haven't
- 00:27:33discussed and you guys can add in the
- 00:27:35Social Circle and uh racism components
- 00:27:38uh which you will not necessarily face
- 00:27:39in in India because most people are
- 00:27:42Indians uh but if you can ignore that 5%
- 00:27:46as I do or not even 5% it's probably
- 00:27:49like let's say let's say I face five
- 00:27:51experiences in eight years so know you
- 00:27:54can compute the probability
- 00:27:59okay um I think we discussed about this
- 00:28:01one topic quite a bit um maybe we can
- 00:28:03talk a little bit about
- 00:28:05money
- 00:28:07um money and social status maybe because
- 00:28:10I know many
- 00:28:11people who go to the US because it it
- 00:28:15elevates their social status
- 00:28:18and uh personally me it does not bother
- 00:28:22me that much maybe money is what bothers
- 00:28:24me more said Social Circle but we can
- 00:28:26also discuss social status yeah
- 00:28:28Circle as in like who you're surrounded
- 00:28:30with correct correct most of the time in
- 00:28:32us I'm alone for example with my family
- 00:28:35whereas here you are necessarily having
- 00:28:37a larger Social Circle
- 00:28:40and yeah that is true um in us also I
- 00:28:43found com Comfort by finding fellow
- 00:28:45Indian students and being around them so
- 00:28:48I think I
- 00:28:49completely understand if someone if
- 00:28:51someone does not get that Social Circle
- 00:28:53especially after they graduate and they
- 00:28:56they try to set up their own families
- 00:28:57and you're probably not surrounded by
- 00:29:00your community members and you find it
- 00:29:01hard to make a group of people to hang
- 00:29:04out with um about the social status
- 00:29:07thing what I was trying to say was uh in
- 00:29:11many families that I closely know uh I
- 00:29:14know internally the the parents also if
- 00:29:17their kid is studying or went to the US
- 00:29:20they they don't want their kid to come
- 00:29:21back because apparently it reduces the
- 00:29:24social status of their parents and for
- 00:29:25kids also the the students also they
- 00:29:27probably don't want to come back because
- 00:29:29it kind of reduces their social status
- 00:29:31not in the US but within their family or
- 00:29:34extended family in
- 00:29:36India uh okay personally for me this is
- 00:29:38not at all a concern I don't care what
- 00:29:41the social status is but maybe for me
- 00:29:44the concern would be the earning
- 00:29:46potential so if uh so right now I'm
- 00:29:49putting all my bet on whatever we are
- 00:29:52working on and I won't regret if things
- 00:29:55do not work out because I have tried
- 00:29:57even if let's say vua fails miserably
- 00:30:00after 10 years I won't regret because I
- 00:30:02have tried the best but if I was in a
- 00:30:06working in a company uh let's say Google
- 00:30:09in India then every day I would have the
- 00:30:12thought I could have also worked in
- 00:30:13Google in in the US or Amazon Seattle
- 00:30:17and could have earned much much higher
- 00:30:19so uh right now I'm not thinking about
- 00:30:22it because I know
- 00:30:23that as an entrepreneur you are taking
- 00:30:26more risk but the reward could be higher
- 00:30:28in the long term so um although the the
- 00:30:33thought of
- 00:30:35um you know not being in the US or being
- 00:30:38in India that that thought does not come
- 00:30:39but I always when I see people for
- 00:30:42example let's say you work in the US for
- 00:30:45five years you can easily afford a very
- 00:30:48very good car a very good house lot of
- 00:30:51things right so material possessions
- 00:30:53it's very easier to make just as an
- 00:30:55employee and you are not working
- 00:30:57probably Saturday Sunday you you you
- 00:30:59have very good work life balance you can
- 00:31:01buy a lot of things very easily so that
- 00:31:04so that
- 00:31:06game um in India it's very difficult as
- 00:31:09an employee as an entrepreneur you have
- 00:31:12much bigger hopes but you are playing a
- 00:31:15delayed gratification game probably so
- 00:31:19how much does it bother you so to
- 00:31:21you uh I I'll ask it differently maybe I
- 00:31:24don't you can get back an answer to this
- 00:31:26question about uh uh in the US like
- 00:31:29after how many years will you feel like
- 00:31:30okay I have made decent enough money and
- 00:31:33I probably don't need more money but I
- 00:31:35need to find something meaningful to do
- 00:31:36for the rest of my life will that will
- 00:31:39that thought come to you at some point
- 00:31:40that is my question to you but before
- 00:31:42that Raj and um how much do you think
- 00:31:46about money and uh if you were working
- 00:31:49in the US you could have made a lot lot
- 00:31:51of money working a lot lesser much
- 00:31:54faster not necessarily in the long term
- 00:31:56but in the short term
- 00:31:58so what do you think about money as a
- 00:32:02factor um being in India and being in
- 00:32:05the
- 00:32:07US yeah so uh I been thinking about
- 00:32:10money actually quite a lot in the last
- 00:32:13few months
- 00:32:14and uh the first thing which is also
- 00:32:18like uh about social status let's say a
- 00:32:22lot of people they value money because
- 00:32:25there is a kind of a show off that is a
- 00:32:27associated with associated with it let's
- 00:32:30say you buy a very expensive car and
- 00:32:33then suddenly people in the society look
- 00:32:35at it and they treat you with more
- 00:32:37respect so uh these materialistic things
- 00:32:41don't matter to me at all actually
- 00:32:44because if you look at a car it's like a
- 00:32:47piece of aluminium which takes you from
- 00:32:49point A to point B
- 00:32:52and why are you working so hard like
- 00:32:54you're working so hard for getting money
- 00:32:55to buy that piece of aluminium
- 00:32:58it's like an extrinsic object but it is
- 00:33:01not it doesn't actually mean
- 00:33:04anything so for me money is important
- 00:33:07not because of showing it off to society
- 00:33:10but because it will give me that
- 00:33:13Independence and and the freedom to live
- 00:33:16the life the way I want to live
- 00:33:18it uh I have gone through that soci that
- 00:33:22societal pressures initially even our
- 00:33:24family had imagined that okay we'll be
- 00:33:27settled in the us and our parents had
- 00:33:30imagined that life for
- 00:33:33us yes yes yeah but then when we came
- 00:33:37back that dream was shattered and uh it
- 00:33:41it took us quite some time to you know
- 00:33:43get them believe that we are not just
- 00:33:45here to just sit and roam around but we
- 00:33:47are actually building something useful
- 00:33:49and then uh yeah so that was a journey
- 00:33:53from there to where we are right
- 00:33:56now uh
- 00:33:59yeah so uh with respect to
- 00:34:02money I think of it like I want to reach
- 00:34:05a stage where it gives me that
- 00:34:07Independence and the freedom and uh I
- 00:34:10also want to be at a stage
- 00:34:13where I have a lot of money like not
- 00:34:15just uh so so you can get independence
- 00:34:19even if you have let's say tens of
- 00:34:21millions of dollars right but then there
- 00:34:23is one level which exists above that
- 00:34:26which is which is something which which
- 00:34:28I desire I still exactly don't know why
- 00:34:31I'm Desiring that because there are
- 00:34:33multiple brackets and even in those
- 00:34:35lower brackets you can get the
- 00:34:36independence and freedom that I want but
- 00:34:39I somehow desire to be in the topmost
- 00:34:42bracket and maybe I'll understand why
- 00:34:45I'm feeling this few months or years
- 00:34:47down the line but I definitely want to
- 00:34:49be up
- 00:34:50there and for me money is important it
- 00:34:53is something which
- 00:34:55is yeah which is which is Cru cral but
- 00:34:58I'm still trying to understand why I
- 00:35:01want to be in that upper strata when it
- 00:35:03comes to
- 00:35:05money oh yeah Raj yes yes yeah I have a
- 00:35:08followup question RIT so um to reach the
- 00:35:12upper strata of money whatever you have
- 00:35:14in your mind do you think your decision
- 00:35:16of coming back to India was uh favorable
- 00:35:19towards it or do you think us would have
- 00:35:22been the better option if this was your
- 00:35:26goal uh yeah
- 00:35:29so I feel that if if you are creating
- 00:35:32something which is valuable to clients
- 00:35:34and which which is truly helping someone
- 00:35:36people will be willing to pay you money
- 00:35:39for that service or product which is
- 00:35:41independent of the region where you are
- 00:35:43living in I feel that we are living in
- 00:35:45times where the country or the place
- 00:35:48that you're living in is completely
- 00:35:50irrelevant because if you have if you're
- 00:35:52building something which is truly
- 00:35:54valuable it will sell to people across
- 00:35:56the globe so uh eventually we are trying
- 00:36:00to build a business model which is also
- 00:36:02local and and Centric to uh people in
- 00:36:05India let's say reamping the school
- 00:36:07education system in terms of AI that is
- 00:36:10going to take us to some stage because
- 00:36:12the clients will be only Indian clients
- 00:36:14but we also have other offerings in our
- 00:36:16business model which are more Global
- 00:36:18offerings which will cater to students
- 00:36:21institutes all over the world so uh the
- 00:36:25the the choice of country really does
- 00:36:27doesn't matter in reaching that upper
- 00:36:30strata of society because the ultimate
- 00:36:32goal is going to be to build something
- 00:36:34which is of tremendous value for our
- 00:36:36client so that is the focus which I have
- 00:36:40on a daily
- 00:36:41basis but yeah uh maybe Raj you can
- 00:36:45answer this question we have also
- 00:36:46discussed it multiple times in our
- 00:36:48apartment but yeah yeah so for me money
- 00:36:52has two purposes mostly first is for my
- 00:36:55basic needs uh just food clothing
- 00:36:59shelter second uh main thing is for us
- 00:37:02to achieve the vision so there is this
- 00:37:04vision of the AI system ecosystem
- 00:37:06Creation in India if you want to buy
- 00:37:08land if you want to create a university
- 00:37:11if you want gpus if you want to create
- 00:37:13some sort of an organizational structure
- 00:37:15like this uh which changes the whole
- 00:37:18education system has a research center
- 00:37:21equivalent to open AI uh has high
- 00:37:23quality research coming out every year
- 00:37:26students valuing research that that
- 00:37:27whole AI ecosystem in schools colleges
- 00:37:29and even after that and one University
- 00:37:32which is like MIT but specifically for
- 00:37:35AI now that is the vision for me what I
- 00:37:38realized is that even if there are 20
- 00:37:39crores in my bank account I will not
- 00:37:42take that BMW I like a BMW i7 electric
- 00:37:45car but I I just like to look at it if I
- 00:37:48get that money in the bank account I
- 00:37:49will use it for this Vision so for me
- 00:37:52the second purpose of money is as a
- 00:37:53means to fulfill this Vision so that I
- 00:37:55can buy land construct the UN City get
- 00:37:58gpus assign professors create the whole
- 00:38:01ecosystem so because my vision in life
- 00:38:03is to create value out of this ecosystem
- 00:38:06and then to capture value out of it and
- 00:38:08money serves as a medium to get there so
- 00:38:11for me also it's like okay what is the
- 00:38:14best place for me right now to for to
- 00:38:17deploy this money or to get this money
- 00:38:18right now it's India if later as he was
- 00:38:20saying if we are expanding to other
- 00:38:22countries to get that money we can
- 00:38:25expand but the ultimate vision is the
- 00:38:26same
- 00:38:27so it's not for I know that doing this I
- 00:38:30will definitely attain status that that
- 00:38:33is a byproduct U and I don't want to get
- 00:38:35a car just to show someone because as
- 00:38:38you said car you can get temporary value
- 00:38:40from car but you cannot capture
- 00:38:42meaningful value but you can capture a
- 00:38:44meaningful value from student studying
- 00:38:46at your
- 00:38:46University that is what I want to deploy
- 00:38:49my money towards so that's why I think
- 00:38:51about money every day but just the
- 00:38:53company should make money so that we can
- 00:38:55deploy it into this vision I myself will
- 00:38:58of course be well off if this vision is
- 00:39:00ATT end because needs are less I'm very
- 00:39:03happy just like the way it is I will I
- 00:39:06will never I'm not that kind of person
- 00:39:08who will drive a BMW to the office
- 00:39:10anyways even if you become rich so that
- 00:39:14I realized about myself so money plays a
- 00:39:17very crucial role I think about it every
- 00:39:19day how the company will make money so
- 00:39:20that we have 100 crores in the bank
- 00:39:22account to reach this Vision status game
- 00:39:25and all others are playing that let them
- 00:39:27play but I'm not in that I want to do
- 00:39:30this because then ultimately I know I
- 00:39:31will rise above everyone else so I'm not
- 00:39:35even thinking about that status game and
- 00:39:37all that I just every day morning I'm
- 00:39:39thinking how to achieve this
- 00:39:41Vision
- 00:39:46yeah so to sh's question concisely I can
- 00:39:52uh maybe direct 95% of the people
- 00:39:56watching this video to probably do what
- 00:39:59I'm seeing I'm doing versus what Raj and
- 00:40:02rajit and you didn't actually mention
- 00:40:04about the upper levels that you want to
- 00:40:06reach um is trying to do because uh
- 00:40:10statistically what I'm doing is more
- 00:40:11likely so even if the 100% of the people
- 00:40:14watching this video want to do what Raj
- 00:40:16and Reas are trying to do they're not
- 00:40:17going to get there statistically you're
- 00:40:19not going to get there so I am saying
- 00:40:21that I'm sa saving 5K I have uh whatever
- 00:40:25amount in my bank already by age of 30
- 00:40:28and it's going to accumulate it's going
- 00:40:29to compound it's going to get between 5
- 00:40:32and 10 investing in okay
- 00:40:35stocks this is what is statistically a
- 00:40:38successful life when you are not aiming
- 00:40:41for uh extremely successful things that
- 00:40:44you want to do now Jensen for example
- 00:40:46Jensen hang has said that startup makers
- 00:40:49are naive they have to be naive because
- 00:40:51if you play by stats no one will ever
- 00:40:53have take a startup because 99% of
- 00:40:56startups fail so completely understand
- 00:40:59your vision and you guys should go for
- 00:41:00it but uh the likelihood of success at
- 00:41:04this point when I define success my way
- 00:41:07is higher for me that's the stats now
- 00:41:09the second question is this naturally
- 00:41:11affords me like other things I want like
- 00:41:14a semi- hybrid car driving around us not
- 00:41:17because I'm like looking for status or
- 00:41:19anything I just like driving cars and I
- 00:41:23just want to drive a car really couldn't
- 00:41:25care less what other people are thinking
- 00:41:27that I'm affording a car just because I
- 00:41:29like it so whatever I want and what my
- 00:41:31wife wants and what my puppy wants I'm
- 00:41:33able to afford uh very easily and still
- 00:41:36like have enough amount of savings in
- 00:41:38the bank like I test my like my puppy
- 00:41:41goes to the vet almost every other week
- 00:41:44and uh my wife does like we do trips to
- 00:41:46South America um every few months um and
- 00:41:50then still we save whatever decent
- 00:41:52amount of money and still we are on
- 00:41:54track to like save quite a bit we will
- 00:41:55get a house soon enough we'll get a we
- 00:41:57already have a car
- 00:41:59so I'm just saying that it looks like if
- 00:42:02I'm not having that extreme Vision to
- 00:42:04achieve extreme success but I'm still
- 00:42:06like reasonably uh ambitious to attain
- 00:42:09like decent amounts of things like if
- 00:42:11I'm working at 3M for the next 20 years
- 00:42:13I do want to reach a highest level that
- 00:42:153M efforts for their research employees
- 00:42:18which is like t7 which is you know very
- 00:42:20very less likely for people it's like 5%
- 00:42:22I do want to get there but that's still
- 00:42:25statistically 5% is much higher than
- 00:42:270.1% or whatever that startups will have
- 00:42:30it's not like to deter anybody I'm just
- 00:42:32seeing numbers here for the purpose of
- 00:42:34that so in that way I feel like
- 00:42:37comfortable with what I have right now
- 00:42:39but if I'm having a startup I will have
- 00:42:42a I have a different vision from Raj
- 00:42:44right I want to start up in the mental
- 00:42:45health space and I will not come to a
- 00:42:48country where mental health is to a
- 00:42:50large extent still taboo still better
- 00:42:52than 10 years L before but I know
- 00:42:54companies which are doing it like I
- 00:42:55won't mention the companies but I know
- 00:42:56how they startup Founders have written
- 00:42:58that they went to companies and the
- 00:43:00people were like refusing to use their
- 00:43:02service because using their service
- 00:43:04meant that they had to like uh agree
- 00:43:06that something was wrong in first in the
- 00:43:07in terms of mental health which they
- 00:43:09didn't want to do that is such an
- 00:43:10outdated Outlook that like I wouldn't
- 00:43:12even entertain those kind of
- 00:43:15interactions uh when I care so much
- 00:43:17about mental health so that like kind of
- 00:43:19moves India away from the benchmarks of
- 00:43:21things that I would aim for that so
- 00:43:23anyways the mental startup so let's say
- 00:43:27uh I agree that in India the awareness
- 00:43:29with respect to mental health is not
- 00:43:31that high but what if uh you are the
- 00:43:33person who creates that awareness
- 00:43:37through your company in India there are
- 00:43:38two options right you can start where
- 00:43:40it's better and proliferate quickly
- 00:43:43there in India it's not good I agree but
- 00:43:46it's better than our parents for sure
- 00:43:49people are talking about it uh almost in
- 00:43:52our circles at least almost everyone
- 00:43:54talks about it so it's better 15 years
- 00:43:56back and it's going to maybe get better
- 00:43:5830 years later and people like you might
- 00:44:00play that transformation role I think
- 00:44:02there is a scope for one major mental
- 00:44:04health startup in India which will
- 00:44:06reform things do things so let's say uh
- 00:44:09what if between these two options how do
- 00:44:13you choose where you want to direct the
- 00:44:16efforts into because this is also quite
- 00:44:17impactful right you will get to be at
- 00:44:19the Forefront of the awareness
- 00:44:20revolution in
- 00:44:22India so it's like shat said earlier so
- 00:44:25we are we are speaking here about number
- 00:44:27then if if it's like I'm starting a
- 00:44:29startup in two and two years from now I
- 00:44:32have let's say uh uh I'm not going to
- 00:44:35say exact numbers but I have uh 1
- 00:44:38million in my bank account right now I'm
- 00:44:40basically making a bet something similar
- 00:44:42to you guys like my wife likes India
- 00:44:45already the AI agents is a very very
- 00:44:47good game to play for the mental health
- 00:44:49startup space there's lots that you
- 00:44:50could do with even like very few
- 00:44:52employees right now uh and we have
- 00:44:55certain visions of getting a network in
- 00:44:57in the US and coming to India to make it
- 00:44:58work but you're playing a game where you
- 00:45:00have 1 million in your account you're
- 00:45:02going to use some of it and there is a
- 00:45:041% chance that you will
- 00:45:06succeed making a away with the other
- 00:45:08game which is like stay continue to stay
- 00:45:10in the US for another 20 years and like
- 00:45:13100% chance that you will make it into
- 00:45:1510 to 20 million combined with my wife
- 00:45:17so that's a very risky game that that
- 00:45:19you need to actually try to like write
- 00:45:21out now Raj said you have vision and
- 00:45:23stuff and yeah obviously if you can like
- 00:45:25somehow feel that urge you that this is
- 00:45:28what your life stands for go for it
- 00:45:29money is like secondary it doesn't
- 00:45:31really matter but if you're not able to
- 00:45:33do that then you have to do like datab
- 00:45:36based decision instead of opinion based
- 00:45:37decision and then it becomes really hard
- 00:45:39to justify coming back and doing this in
- 00:45:41India versus continuing to play the safe
- 00:45:43game in the US that's like my
- 00:45:46thought so if you're already able to
- 00:45:49afford many things that you would like
- 00:45:50to afford and you have a very good
- 00:45:52likelihood of you know affording a few
- 00:45:55things because you have a very
- 00:45:57predictable trajectory M
- 00:46:01um do you think you will get bored after
- 00:46:043 four
- 00:46:05years um because you know what to expect
- 00:46:10do you feel like you are in an autopilot
- 00:46:12mode and and do you think you want to
- 00:46:16take control
- 00:46:17of um I guess more than control so
- 00:46:21during my PhD at some point I felt like
- 00:46:23I'm in an autopilot mode and I wanted to
- 00:46:24get out of it so what I mean by that is
- 00:46:27uh by third year I felt like okay I'll
- 00:46:29finish my PhD I'll I'll apply for a job
- 00:46:33H1B Visa Green Card citizenship so that
- 00:46:37is what I mean by autopilot like every
- 00:46:38step is kind of predefined and you know
- 00:46:42exactly what to do it's just about
- 00:46:44figuring out how to do it uh so you talk
- 00:46:46to seniors or whoever who have done it
- 00:46:48and then you just play the game it's
- 00:46:50like it's like a predefined game and you
- 00:46:52are you just need to go from A to B to C
- 00:46:55and Ascend the levels so do you think
- 00:46:58the current game that we are playing is
- 00:47:00maybe it is a game for people who have
- 00:47:02done it but at least for me since I
- 00:47:05don't have the experience and I haven't
- 00:47:06seen many people do it to me it's still
- 00:47:09like an
- 00:47:10uncertain thing uh it's not like a
- 00:47:13predefined game where I know where I'm
- 00:47:16going next I just need to figure
- 00:47:18out how to do it it's not exactly like
- 00:47:20that but in your case do you feel do you
- 00:47:22think you will get
- 00:47:24bored uh I would I would think I
- 00:47:27sometimes feel bored at work currently
- 00:47:29as well but it's like always going to
- 00:47:32change right dynamic dynamic nature of
- 00:47:34your work is obviously much more than
- 00:47:35mine but so couple of years later kids
- 00:47:39kids will come into the picture that's
- 00:47:40one dynamicity then you will change your
- 00:47:43job into like from technical individual
- 00:47:45contributor to managing a group of
- 00:47:47people then managing a bigger group of
- 00:47:49people and then they still individually
- 00:47:50contributing so those Dynamic stuff uh
- 00:47:53will come and I think that will keep you
- 00:47:55engaged uh to some extent and that's
- 00:47:57what I'm counting on like uh if I'm
- 00:47:59doing this but I also genuinely want to
- 00:48:01do something for the mental health
- 00:48:03because I've struggled a lot with it and
- 00:48:05I feel like that's one purpose that I
- 00:48:06need to fulfill uh but then it's not
- 00:48:10like I said a simple simple thing that
- 00:48:12you could take very quickly at least for
- 00:48:14me uh but to directly answer your
- 00:48:17question it's less Dynamic than you guys
- 00:48:19but there's still a lot of
- 00:48:21uncertainities I feel that will come
- 00:48:23along the way as I keep going from a T3
- 00:48:24to T4 to whatever if I continue at 3m.
- 00:48:26for example and that will I hope be
- 00:48:29sufficient to keep me uh on my foot
- 00:48:32every day to continue to like be
- 00:48:35interested in my
- 00:48:37work um yeah just just something
- 00:48:41unrelated but uh uh there is just one uh
- 00:48:45one discussion I had with someone uh
- 00:48:47around like two years back when I came
- 00:48:49back to
- 00:48:50India uh so this lady was a mother of
- 00:48:54two and she also had had come back to
- 00:48:57India around 5 years back and I was
- 00:49:00asking her how has your experience been
- 00:49:02Etc and then she had this interesting
- 00:49:05line where she said that uh she wants to
- 00:49:08raise her kids in India because in India
- 00:49:12you get to learn how to navigate
- 00:49:14yourself in chaos so so if you look at
- 00:49:19in every single way like every hurdle we
- 00:49:22have faced in life there has always been
- 00:49:24a lot of a lot of competition
- 00:49:27and and the system inherently has a lot
- 00:49:30of chaos and uncertainty and if you want
- 00:49:32to get something you need to pass a lot
- 00:49:35of people and pass a lot of hurdles to
- 00:49:36get that so just a simple example let's
- 00:49:39say there is we visited this uh this
- 00:49:43monument called ashadam right in yeah in
- 00:49:47in Delhi akaram and was a beautiful
- 00:49:50monument and we were so excited to see
- 00:49:51it but there was such a big queue that
- 00:49:54it took us three hours to get inside
- 00:49:57and then after that we had a good time
- 00:49:58but then just the barrier that you have
- 00:50:00to cross to get to that stage was huge
- 00:50:03and that barrier is seen not just in
- 00:50:05seeing monuments but also in other
- 00:50:07places where you have to pass
- 00:50:09competitive exams or even get anything
- 00:50:11which is of value and then she was of
- 00:50:14the opinion that she wants to raise her
- 00:50:16kids in this chaos because those
- 00:50:18learnings they can utilize later in life
- 00:50:21even if they go abroad that they have
- 00:50:23learned to handle the most complex
- 00:50:25chaotic system and then all other
- 00:50:27systems that they are going to see are
- 00:50:29going to be simpler than
- 00:50:31that so that that was something
- 00:50:34interesting and U I'm I'm also think
- 00:50:37like I understand the chaos which which
- 00:50:40she said but I'm interested to know your
- 00:50:42opinion also about raising kids since
- 00:50:45you mentioned about kids as a certainty
- 00:50:47in a few years what are your opinions
- 00:50:50about raising kids in like different
- 00:50:54countries so I had a like
- 00:50:57yeah we'll we'll wrap it up so there's
- 00:51:00no there's like one thing to follow up
- 00:51:02on this so competition you mentioned
- 00:51:05competition is it a pro or a con
- 00:51:07according to what you guys think because
- 00:51:09to me competition is a con because it
- 00:51:11kills the value of the actual learning
- 00:51:13at least that's how I view it that's but
- 00:51:16at the same time India has a lot of Pros
- 00:51:18for the way people are raised uh like
- 00:51:20how you are taught to respect elders and
- 00:51:22how you taught to behave and stuff which
- 00:51:24is different in the US but at the same
- 00:51:26time us your kid can actually uh your
- 00:51:30your boy kid can actually bring a boy
- 00:51:32and you will accept it like lgbtq for
- 00:51:34example I don't believe this happens in
- 00:51:35India now that's a different so it's
- 00:51:37very hard to say like what is the right
- 00:51:40way to bring up a kid or what you want
- 00:51:42for your next Generation uh so to like
- 00:51:45honestly I don't know the answer to this
- 00:51:46because everyone will have their own but
- 00:51:47yeah that's whatever you guys what is
- 00:51:50like the one thing you feel is most
- 00:51:52important for your next generation and
- 00:51:53does that exist in the US or in India
- 00:51:58uh one thing that is important for
- 00:52:01everyone is feeling respected maybe and
- 00:52:04I
- 00:52:06think
- 00:52:08uh maybe it exists better in the US
- 00:52:12people people generally show you a
- 00:52:15respect at least uh in their gestures I
- 00:52:18don't know how they do it whether they
- 00:52:19respect internally or not and that that
- 00:52:21is important like small small gestures
- 00:52:23where you respect the existence of the
- 00:52:25other person perspective of their
- 00:52:28whatever their personal preferences are
- 00:52:30so from that point of view I think and I
- 00:52:32also think it is very high like highly
- 00:52:34likely
- 00:52:35that uh let's say if we have kids they
- 00:52:39might go go to other countries it's it's
- 00:52:42very likely and probably we can do
- 00:52:43nothing to prevent it uh or nor nor do
- 00:52:47nor do I wish to prevent it whatever
- 00:52:48they want to do but it's very likely
- 00:52:50that that that might happen so uh even
- 00:52:54if I wanted to raise a child I can only
- 00:52:59probably do it till they are 18 or
- 00:53:01something till they are studying in
- 00:53:03undergrad and maybe they can go to
- 00:53:05wherever they want to if they want to
- 00:53:07study undergrad in the US or somewhere
- 00:53:09else
- 00:53:11um but many people make this statement
- 00:53:15about they are long on India like they
- 00:53:19they have a very high hope about India
- 00:53:21in the long term so that statement I
- 00:53:24agree with a lot I think India might
- 00:53:28grow a lot in the next 30 Years and I
- 00:53:31really want to be at the Forefront of
- 00:53:32that growth and I want to contribute to
- 00:53:34it not out of patriotism or anything but
- 00:53:37out of selfish desire to add value to a
- 00:53:41place something like that so I really I
- 00:53:45really
- 00:53:45think a lot of people are now building
- 00:53:48things in India contributing to his
- 00:53:50growth and I also want to be part of
- 00:53:52that story and when I look back when I'm
- 00:53:5460 or something creating maybe 20,000
- 00:53:58jobs 50,000 jobs something like that and
- 00:54:01having created a organization that
- 00:54:05delivers a lot of value that runs itself
- 00:54:08which lives two generations even after I
- 00:54:10am gone if I can do something like that
- 00:54:12I would prefer it to be done in India
- 00:54:14than anywhere else so I would say that
- 00:54:17is keeping me very optimistic about
- 00:54:20India irrespective of all the issues
- 00:54:24that I may have been facing here so so
- 00:54:27that's my last last two
- 00:54:31cents yeah I think I think we can yeah
- 00:54:35can I wrap it up guys
- 00:54:37yes thank you so much thank you so much
- 00:54:40everyone yes
- 00:54:45bye very long
