فيديو أسئلة وأجوبة
What is the purpose of the gearboxes in the tutorial?
The gearboxes are used to adjust the torque and speed of the vehicle's transmission system.
How are gear ratios calculated?
Gear ratios are calculated by multiplying the fractions of the gearbox settings instead of adding them.
What are the main points to remember about gearbox orientation?
When the arrow points away from the engine, it converts RPS to torque, and when it points towards the engine, it converts torque to RPS.
How do you know which gear to use for different vehicles?
You can look up the gear ratios for real vehicles online and replicate them in the game.
Can you stack gearboxes?
Yes, multiple gearboxes can be stacked to achieve higher torque by multiplying their ratios.

- 00:00:00hello this Captain Welcome Back to
- 00:00:01stormworks Basics tutorial in this
- 00:00:03tutorial I'm going to be going over how
- 00:00:05to build a transmission for cars and
- 00:00:07light trucks so let's go ahead and let's
- 00:00:10get started all right so the first thing
- 00:00:11we want to do is we're going to look at
- 00:00:12our parts and so we have some gearboxes
- 00:00:14here we have three different gearboxes
- 00:00:15and one question that still people ask a
- 00:00:17lot is are there any differences between
- 00:00:19the three Gearbox and the answer is no
- 00:00:21there used to be a difference where each
- 00:00:23gearbox had a certain amount of torque
- 00:00:25that it could handle before breaking uh
- 00:00:27the devs removed that I think was a good
- 00:00:29idea to remove that it made some sense
- 00:00:30in the beginning but the issue is this
- 00:00:32is this gives us more flexibility to
- 00:00:35build whatever we want by having
- 00:00:36gearboxes for example one by one so it
- 00:00:38will do the same as a five by five so
- 00:00:40three gearboxes are the same they all do
- 00:00:42the same thing currently the only
- 00:00:44difference is Aesthetics so let's look
- 00:00:46at the basics of the gearbox there are a
- 00:00:48couple things we need to think about
- 00:00:50when we look at these gearboxes in game
- 00:00:51so first thing we want to do is let's
- 00:00:53look at the arrow as you can see we have
- 00:00:54an arrow we can flip these one way or
- 00:00:56the other and so there are some ways to
- 00:00:59think about this so one one thing I'm
- 00:01:00going to do is I'll take a modular
- 00:01:01engine here and I'll just put a clutch
- 00:01:03on here and this will show you what
- 00:01:04direction the engine is coming from so
- 00:01:06I'll actually just do
- 00:01:08very simply we'll just show an engine
- 00:01:10I'm not going to hook this engine up
- 00:01:12it's just gonna kind of be a placeholder
- 00:01:13to show you which direction the engine
- 00:01:15is all right so that is our engine
- 00:01:18and if we look at the gearboxes we have
- 00:01:20an arrow on the gearbox and that is very
- 00:01:23important to understand what is going on
- 00:01:25so you're doing two things with gearing
- 00:01:27one you're trading RPS which is speed
- 00:01:31for torque which is power so what this
- 00:01:34means is if the engine is turning many
- 00:01:36more times it is creating a lot of
- 00:01:39torque and in this case we're going to
- 00:01:40be adding a wheel so we'll put a wheel
- 00:01:42on there to demonstrate what we're
- 00:01:43actually turning because that's going to
- 00:01:44be a tutorial for cars and trucks and so
- 00:01:47if we look at this when the arrow is
- 00:01:49pointing away from the engine what we're
- 00:01:51doing is we're trading the RPS of the
- 00:01:53engine and we're converting into torque
- 00:01:56power so RPS is speed torque is power
- 00:01:59when the arrow is pointing toward the
- 00:02:02engine what we're doing is we're trading
- 00:02:04the torque of the engine for RPS you
- 00:02:06don't get anything for free you have to
- 00:02:09trade one for the other and so for
- 00:02:10example if you wanted to keep trading
- 00:02:12away your torque from your engine to get
- 00:02:14more RPS speed you're eventually you're
- 00:02:17going to need to add a bigger engine
- 00:02:18I've talked about this in other
- 00:02:19tutorials where eventually if increasing
- 00:02:22the gear ratio well the arrows pointing
- 00:02:24towards the engine causes you to go
- 00:02:26slower it means you need more power in
- 00:02:28the form of a larger engine these are
- 00:02:31the important things to know is the
- 00:02:33arrow pointing away from the engine
- 00:02:35you're converting the RPS of the engine
- 00:02:38to torque this is giving you more torque
- 00:02:39this is good for trucks and when you
- 00:02:42have the arrow pointing toward the
- 00:02:44engine that is converting the torque of
- 00:02:45the engine the power into speed all
- 00:02:48right so that's one of the first things
- 00:02:50you need to know about these gearbox the
- 00:02:52second thing let's go ahead and click on
- 00:02:53the gearbox we have two ratios per box
- 00:02:55only two ratios we have an off ratio
- 00:02:58that is the default ratio if we do
- 00:03:00nothing to this gearbox it will be this
- 00:03:02top ratio so for example if you're going
- 00:03:04to run a boat boats generally don't
- 00:03:05shift gears so if your boat has say a
- 00:03:089-5 gear ratio on there let's stick that
- 00:03:11in there and you never plan on shifting
- 00:03:14because boats don't shift their gears
- 00:03:15generally there might be a couple cases
- 00:03:17but most bones boats never shift gears
- 00:03:20if you have a 9-5 gear ratio for your
- 00:03:23boat and you never plan on shifting it
- 00:03:24you can just leave that in there and you
- 00:03:26never have to worry about swapping gears
- 00:03:28you don't have to plug in the
- 00:03:28electricity you don't have to do any of
- 00:03:30that but we have two ratios nine five on
- 00:03:33this and then we have other ratios here
- 00:03:34and we'll go through the ratios really
- 00:03:36quick one negative one that's your
- 00:03:38reverse so that will mean for one
- 00:03:40rotation of the engine we're gonna go
- 00:03:42negative one uh at the wheel so you need
- 00:03:46to consider it engine wheel now this
- 00:03:48very much depends on which way the arrow
- 00:03:50is pointing so again if the arrow is
- 00:03:52pointing away from the engine this is
- 00:03:54the default position for the gearbox and
- 00:03:56so we look at the numbers here let's go
- 00:03:58to a real simple one three to one so
- 00:04:00what this means is for three rotations
- 00:04:02of the engine on the left side here we
- 00:04:05get one rotation of the wheel so when
- 00:04:07the arrow is pointing away it is a three
- 00:04:09one now if we look over here when the
- 00:04:11arrow is pointing toward the engine this
- 00:04:13is actually backwards all right so for
- 00:04:16every one rotation of the engine we're
- 00:04:18getting three rotations of the wheel
- 00:04:20we're trading away the power of the
- 00:04:23engine for more speed so if this wheel
- 00:04:27if the the circumference of this wheel
- 00:04:29is one meter for every one rotation of
- 00:04:31the engine we're going to go one meter
- 00:04:33forward so for if this is one RPS we're
- 00:04:36gonna go one meter per second if the
- 00:04:38circumference is one meter all right so
- 00:04:40that's important to know so we have two
- 00:04:42ratios here if we look here we have a
- 00:04:44gear switch this will allow us to switch
- 00:04:46from that first ratio to the second
- 00:04:49ratio that's what we need to do there we
- 00:04:52also have electricity we need to plug in
- 00:04:54the electricity if we want to switch
- 00:04:55this gearbox again the example I talked
- 00:04:57about if you have a boat and you're just
- 00:04:59using a 9-5 and you do not need to ever
- 00:05:02shift your gearbox you don't need to
- 00:05:04plug it in to the on off and you do not
- 00:05:07need to plug in the electricity if you
- 00:05:08never plan on shifting it with our
- 00:05:10transmission here we're going to end up
- 00:05:11shifting so we're going to need to all
- 00:05:12right so the next thing you need to know
- 00:05:13about these gearboxes is stacking the
- 00:05:15gearbox so as you can see I've lined up
- 00:05:17three of them pointing away from the
- 00:05:18engine this is going to give us a lot
- 00:05:19more torque again because they're
- 00:05:21pointing away from the engine our wheel
- 00:05:23is going to move slower but it's going
- 00:05:25to be more powerful allowing us to move
- 00:05:26bigger loads like say a truck what you
- 00:05:28need to understand is how do I stack my
- 00:05:30gearboxes and how do I multiply them
- 00:05:32this is a big mistake I see a lot of new
- 00:05:34players do is they will add the
- 00:05:37fractions so these are essentially
- 00:05:39fractions that's 1 divided by one is one
- 00:05:42that's a one to one all right this is
- 00:05:44six divided by five we can do the math
- 00:05:46really quick here 6 divided by five
- 00:05:48that's 1.2 to 1. so 1.2 turns of the
- 00:05:52engine for one turn of the wheel that's
- 00:05:54a three two three divided by two is a
- 00:05:571.5 as you can see they're stepping up a
- 00:05:59little bit they're stepping up
- 00:06:01incrementally nine divided by five
- 00:06:03that's a 1.8 as you can see they're
- 00:06:04going up a little bit each time here's a
- 00:06:07two one two divided by one is a two of
- 00:06:10course uh five divided by 2 is 2.5 3
- 00:06:14divided by one three divided by one is a
- 00:06:17three to one of course and so we have
- 00:06:19these gearbox here so let's just do real
- 00:06:22simple math here three to one three to
- 00:06:24one
- 00:06:24three to one so we remember we do not
- 00:06:27add our fractions these are fractions we
- 00:06:29do not add them we multiply our
- 00:06:31fractions so this is a three three so
- 00:06:34this would be three
- 00:06:35times 3 is 9 times 3 is 27. so this is a
- 00:06:4027 to 1 gear ratio so what this means is
- 00:06:42for every 27 rotations of the engine
- 00:06:45we're going to get one rotation of the
- 00:06:48wheel so we need to understand that
- 00:06:49first to understand how a transmission
- 00:06:51is going to work you multiply your
- 00:06:53fractions you do not add them so a
- 00:06:54little bit more complicated one here is
- 00:06:563 times 3 is 9 9 times 5 is 45 45
- 00:06:59divided by 2 will be 22.5 to 1 gear
- 00:07:03ratio all right good so we understand
- 00:07:05that we have to multiply these now we
- 00:07:08also have to understand that if we have
- 00:07:10them like this we're still multiplying
- 00:07:12them and so we can understand this
- 00:07:13really quickly let's go six five six
- 00:07:16five and this one's pointing this way so
- 00:07:18this would actually be a 5 6. so what
- 00:07:20that would be is a 30 over 30 which is a
- 00:07:23one over one so these cancel each other
- 00:07:25out so you'll see people do this
- 00:07:27sometimes where they're just you know
- 00:07:29trying to kind of pull numbers out of
- 00:07:31their hat it's better to them to do the
- 00:07:33actual math on these but you still don't
- 00:07:35multiply them out so let's go ahead and
- 00:07:38I have a chart it's in a Google Sheets
- 00:07:40chart that helps you do this where you
- 00:07:42can set up your gear ratios and I'll go
- 00:07:44ahead and show you that now all right so
- 00:07:46here's a Google Sheets chart and I made
- 00:07:48this up here and this will allow you to
- 00:07:50use four gearboxes and put in all the
- 00:07:53different ratios and again like I said
- 00:07:55before this is just simple multiplying
- 00:07:58fractions so here this gearbox is
- 00:08:00pointing away from the engine so it's
- 00:08:02going to be three rotations of the
- 00:08:04engine for every one rotation of the
- 00:08:07wheel in this case all right and again
- 00:08:09let's say gearbox two we wanted to do a
- 00:08:12three to one as you can see over here
- 00:08:14it's starting to multiply them so it's
- 00:08:16multiplying three times three that's
- 00:08:18nine so it'll be three times three times
- 00:08:21one times one is nine one times one
- 00:08:24times one times one is one that's a nine
- 00:08:26over one the reduced ratio is the same
- 00:08:28nine to one if we went did something a
- 00:08:30little bit more complicated here let's
- 00:08:32do a five two as you can see that's a 15
- 00:08:34to 2 or a 7.5 to 1 gear ratio so with
- 00:08:39using this chart it makes a lot easier
- 00:08:40you don't have to do the math yourself
- 00:08:41as you can see this one's pointing away
- 00:08:43away let's make one towards so this
- 00:08:46would be pointing towards now you still
- 00:08:47have to do this manually unfortunately I
- 00:08:48can't do it because of limitations of
- 00:08:50sheets but let's say you go in here and
- 00:08:52you do a three to one now remember when
- 00:08:54the arrow is pointing toward the engine
- 00:08:56the fraction is going to be flipped so a
- 00:08:59three to one now becomes a one to three
- 00:09:01one rotation of the engine gives you
- 00:09:02three rotations of the wheel okay so now
- 00:09:05as you can see it's doing this
- 00:09:06multiplication for me I don't have to
- 00:09:08pull up my calculator do anything else
- 00:09:09it's a 15 over 6 which reduces down to a
- 00:09:122.5 to 1 gear ratio okay good so we have
- 00:09:15that all set up so let's do the first
- 00:09:17step we should do when we try to build
- 00:09:18the transmission for a car or truck and
- 00:09:21that is instead of trying to imagine the
- 00:09:24numbers ourselves or guess or spend a
- 00:09:26ton of time just trying to test things
- 00:09:27out let's look at some real cars that is
- 00:09:30one of the easiest things you can do the
- 00:09:31math is still math it doesn't change
- 00:09:33because it's in a game there are a
- 00:09:36little bit of differences for example
- 00:09:37the wheels tend to be a little bit
- 00:09:38bigger in game than they are in real
- 00:09:40life so that will change some things but
- 00:09:43the numbers are still pretty close and
- 00:09:45the distances between the different gear
- 00:09:47ratios are still very applicable because
- 00:09:50again it's simple math and so let's go
- 00:09:53ahead and let's look at some real gear
- 00:09:55ratios for some real cars all right so
- 00:09:57Ford is pretty good at posting these
- 00:10:00user manuals for the cars and in these
- 00:10:02user manuals it will show some gear
- 00:10:04ratios and so right here there's a 2017
- 00:10:07Ford Fiesta Ford Fiesta very small car
- 00:10:10you know I've driven them before they're
- 00:10:12very tiny and so one thing you'll notice
- 00:10:14is because the car is small and light it
- 00:10:17has a small motor but it doesn't need a
- 00:10:19lot of torque it doesn't need a really
- 00:10:21low gear ratio because it's a tiny
- 00:10:23little car it's not hauling a lot it's
- 00:10:24not like a big truck big trucks will
- 00:10:26have like a 15 to 1 gear ratio in first
- 00:10:28gear so about a 3.8 to 1 gear ratio
- 00:10:31second gear is a two to one third year
- 00:10:33is a 1.28 8.95 0.75 to 1 in fifth gear
- 00:10:38all right so these are a ratio so we
- 00:10:40don't have to try to figure these out on
- 00:10:41our own we can go online and we can
- 00:10:43figure these out all right so the next
- 00:10:45website here this is the Ford F-150 Hub
- 00:10:48so this is a light pickup truck so if we
- 00:10:49look here we have a bunch of different
- 00:10:51Transmissions here we have four speed
- 00:10:53Auto five speed Auto we have some manual
- 00:10:55transmission here here's a 5 speed
- 00:10:57manual again you know some people think
- 00:11:00a pickup truck is a big old truck it's
- 00:11:02really not you know I've driven tractor
- 00:11:04trailers before a pickup truck is
- 00:11:06essentially just a car with you know
- 00:11:09some badging on it you start to get into
- 00:11:10some things like the f550s those tend to
- 00:11:13be actual real trucks these are pretty
- 00:11:16small trucks and so again as you can see
- 00:11:17the gear ratios really aren't that much
- 00:11:19different than that Ford Fiesta the
- 00:11:21engine is more powerful
- 00:11:23that's the only difference so the ratio
- 00:11:26stay pretty similar but the engine is
- 00:11:28just more powerful so like if we look at
- 00:11:29this six-speed Auto here we have a 4.17
- 00:11:32a 2.34 1.5 to a 1.1 a 0.87 and 8.69
- 00:11:39all right we look down here we have some
- 00:11:41manuals here three nine two two five one
- 00:11:44four nine one and a point eight and then
- 00:11:45these are your reverse gears here so
- 00:11:47reverse gears you'll notice reverse is
- 00:11:49pretty close to First and the reason is
- 00:11:51pretty simple right an object at rest
- 00:11:54wants to stay at rest and object in
- 00:11:56motion wants to stay in motion
- 00:11:58so a truck or a car when it's stopped it
- 00:12:01needs a lot of torque power in order to
- 00:12:03get moving and so that doesn't matter
- 00:12:06whether you're trying to go forward or
- 00:12:07in reverse and so forward and reverse
- 00:12:10first gear and reverse tend to be very
- 00:12:12low because that helps you get that
- 00:12:14heavy Mass moving that is now stopped
- 00:12:17and doesn't want to move as you start to
- 00:12:19go as you start to move the vehicle it
- 00:12:21is easier the object in motion will
- 00:12:23sustain motion it's easier for you to
- 00:12:26stay there so what you're doing is
- 00:12:27you're effectively trading away your
- 00:12:30torque
- 00:12:31for more speed so you're giving up power
- 00:12:33because you don't need it anymore and
- 00:12:35you're trading for Speed all right so
- 00:12:37that's why it's very challenging to
- 00:12:39start in high gear you just don't have
- 00:12:41the torque in order to get the vehicle
- 00:12:42moving all right so we're going to use
- 00:12:44some of these numbers and now we don't
- 00:12:45have to make them up ourselves we can
- 00:12:47start with that number and so we're
- 00:12:50going to do is we're going to do two
- 00:12:52facing away and two facing towards now
- 00:12:54sometimes you need to change these
- 00:12:55around but this is a pretty good start
- 00:12:57here and what we're going to do is we're
- 00:12:59just going to make these all pretty much
- 00:13:01one to one
- 00:13:03101s and as you can see those are all
- 00:13:051011 ones and we'll start with this
- 00:13:08basis and then we're going to go into
- 00:13:09the chart and what we're going to do is
- 00:13:10we're going to use that information from
- 00:13:12the internet we're going to use real
- 00:13:13life gear ratios and we're going to plug
- 00:13:15them into our chart and when you use the
- 00:13:17numbers from in game to get our gear
- 00:13:19ratios as close as possible to the real
- 00:13:21life which we know works all right so
- 00:13:23now looking back at this gear chart
- 00:13:25which this will be linked in the
- 00:13:27description this chart here and so if
- 00:13:29you look right here we have what's
- 00:13:30called desired ratio what this is is a
- 00:13:33this is just a place for you to be able
- 00:13:35to put in the ratios that you found
- 00:13:36online or wherever you found them so in
- 00:13:38this I'm going to use the Ford Fiesta
- 00:13:40manual this is a
- 00:13:423.8421 gear ratio all right that's our
- 00:13:45first gear for the Ford Fiesta second
- 00:13:47one is a
- 00:13:492.03 so
- 00:13:522.03 to 1 gear ratio next one is going
- 00:13:56to be a 1.28 again I'm just looking at
- 00:13:58that chart that I already showed you
- 00:13:59guys this is a 0.95 0.95 to 1 and we're
- 00:14:04only going to make a five speed we don't
- 00:14:05need to make a six speed here and so
- 00:14:07this is going to be
- 00:14:090.7521 and we will just leave this one
- 00:14:12black sixth gear we do not need we'll
- 00:14:14just leave it blank
- 00:14:15all right so this these are the gears
- 00:14:18that we want to achieve all right and so
- 00:14:20what I'll do is I'll turn these back to
- 00:14:22one ones
- 00:14:23and we'll start fresh so as you can see
- 00:14:25this is going to multiply them out we're
- 00:14:27one one so we want to get a 3.84 all
- 00:14:30right now we again we need to understand
- 00:14:31that each one of these boxes only has
- 00:14:34two gears okay and so we're gonna do
- 00:14:36here is this one's a way remember the
- 00:14:38first two we'll go back to the game real
- 00:14:40quick first two are way away the arrow
- 00:14:42is pointing away from the engine then
- 00:14:43it's towards towards all right so away
- 00:14:45away towards towards so I put a little
- 00:14:48box here this is just to remind you
- 00:14:50which direction they're putting you
- 00:14:51still have to manually enter this in
- 00:14:53yourself but this will tell you this
- 00:14:55will remind you so away away towards
- 00:14:58towards that is the way we have it in
- 00:15:01game that's we're going to set it up in
- 00:15:02the chart all right so now we want to
- 00:15:04achieve a 3.84 all right so let's go
- 00:15:07ahead and let's put something here so
- 00:15:09three to one so three to one that's a
- 00:15:11little bit lower than or a little bit
- 00:15:13higher of a gear than we'd like so we
- 00:15:15want to get it down to 3.8 all right so
- 00:15:17now gearbox two what we could do is we
- 00:15:19could do a six five
- 00:15:23all right there's a 3.6 let's go up even
- 00:15:25higher than that right so the next one
- 00:15:27is a three two
- 00:15:29all right 4.5 so that is too high that's
- 00:15:31fine because what we're going to do next
- 00:15:33is this gearbox here our gearbox 3 this
- 00:15:36is going to be our reverse so we're
- 00:15:37gonna go rev for reverse
- 00:15:40all right so that's going to tell us
- 00:15:41this one's going to be our reverse I
- 00:15:43usually just do it on three uh that's
- 00:15:45just common practice for me you can put
- 00:15:47it wherever you want but I usually put
- 00:15:48it on the third gearbox and so each of
- 00:15:51these is going to have two ratios we can
- 00:15:54use we can use two ratios this one also
- 00:15:57has two ratios but we know that one of
- 00:15:59them is reserved for reverse and so
- 00:16:02because of that what we're going to do
- 00:16:04is all of these need to be the same
- 00:16:06because the other ratio is reverse all
- 00:16:09right so this one is pointing toward the
- 00:16:12engine
- 00:16:12and so we're going to do here is we're
- 00:16:14going to do a six five we need that to
- 00:16:16come down so I'll explain why I'm doing
- 00:16:17it as you can see here 4.5 is larger
- 00:16:20than that so we need to reduce the gear
- 00:16:23ratio so this is pointing towards this
- 00:16:25is make the ones pointing away from the
- 00:16:27engine are making the number bigger the
- 00:16:29ones pointing toward the engine are
- 00:16:31making this number smaller okay and so
- 00:16:34we're at 4.5 we need to get down to a
- 00:16:37384 or as close as we can so we're going
- 00:16:40to do here is a five six remember when
- 00:16:42it's pointing toward the engine the
- 00:16:44number is flipped there's a 3.75 to 1
- 00:16:47Bingo that's pretty close that's
- 00:16:49probably the closest we're going to be
- 00:16:51able to get it but that's really close
- 00:16:52that's point you know uh what is that
- 00:16:55point
- 00:16:5609 something like that away so that's
- 00:17:00pretty pretty damn close there
- 00:17:02all right so next one we want is a 2.03
- 00:17:04all right so let's look at this again
- 00:17:06here and let's go
- 00:17:10let's try a three one
- 00:17:13a three two
- 00:17:16all right there's a four five then we
- 00:17:18this one always now remember because
- 00:17:20this is our reverse all of these need to
- 00:17:22be six fives let's just go ahead and
- 00:17:24we'll fill these all out to six five
- 00:17:26okay
- 00:17:27and so that will save us any uh uh
- 00:17:30problem with screwing this up and
- 00:17:31forgetting to do it these will all be
- 00:17:33six five because it's pointing away from
- 00:17:35the engine all right so we already have
- 00:17:38some in there now so if we look there
- 00:17:39we're at a 375 that makes sense of the
- 00:17:41same is here we want to reduce it some
- 00:17:43more okay so we can do gearbox four now
- 00:17:45remember gearbox four is pointing toward
- 00:17:47the engine let's try a three up remember
- 00:17:51it has to be upside down so three two
- 00:17:532.5 let's go higher than that so that'll
- 00:17:56be of nine fives our next ratio
- 00:17:59there we go
- 00:18:012.08321 so that's pretty close to where
- 00:18:04we want to be here that's within .05 of
- 00:18:07the real gear ratio of the real car as
- 00:18:10you can see we'd have to do all this
- 00:18:11math ourselves the chart makes it easy
- 00:18:13next one here we need to get to is a one
- 00:18:15point uh two eight
- 00:18:18all right so if we look here we're
- 00:18:20already at a 0.83 so instead of going
- 00:18:23back to a three to one we won't bother
- 00:18:25we'll leave this as a one to one for now
- 00:18:28all right the next ratio here we're
- 00:18:30going to have to figure out as you can
- 00:18:32see so by default this is at a 0.83 we
- 00:18:35need to have this come up so these two
- 00:18:38boxes here raise the ratio these two
- 00:18:41will lower it so we need to raise the
- 00:18:43ratio so we're going to go here and
- 00:18:45we'll throw on a 3 2 just to see what it
- 00:18:47does
- 00:18:481.25 look at that right in the money
- 00:18:51that's within .03 of the ratio we want
- 00:18:54excellent all right next one we're going
- 00:18:56to do is fourth gear here so as you can
- 00:18:58see this is already pretty close this
- 00:19:00one needs to come up this one needs to
- 00:19:02come down
- 00:19:03all right so what we'll do here is
- 00:19:05remember we have two ratios here so we
- 00:19:09need to see what we want to use here so
- 00:19:11this one needs to come up a little bit
- 00:19:13so let's try a six five
- 00:19:17there's a one to one perfect we're done
- 00:19:20all right that is right where we want to
- 00:19:22be excellent that is beautiful all right
- 00:19:25so what we're going to do here is this
- 00:19:26one needs to come down okay so to come
- 00:19:29down on this one as you can see we used
- 00:19:30a five nine here so there's one one
- 00:19:32let's try the five nine
- 00:19:34see what it does that is too low okay so
- 00:19:37let's come over here and let's try the
- 00:19:40six five
- 00:19:43all right that's still too low so let's
- 00:19:45try the three too
- 00:19:48beautiful all right so we are now done
- 00:19:51with our transmission you'll see how
- 00:19:52quick and easy that is understanding
- 00:19:54that the ones pointing away from the
- 00:19:56engine are lowering your gear ratio now
- 00:19:59I know these terms are going to be a
- 00:20:00little bit confusing a low gear ratio
- 00:20:03means that you have a lot of torque
- 00:20:04Little Speed a high gear ratio means you
- 00:20:07have little torque a lot of speed and so
- 00:20:11the numbers when I say a low gear ratio
- 00:20:13the bigger the number the lower the
- 00:20:14ratio the smaller the number the higher
- 00:20:17the ratio all right so that's uh that's
- 00:20:21important to know but look at how close
- 00:20:23we got to these ratios using the numbers
- 00:20:25we have in game the chart makes it very
- 00:20:27easy and quick to do these two pointing
- 00:20:29away from the engine they will lower
- 00:20:32your gear ratio giving you a bigger
- 00:20:34number these two pointing toward the
- 00:20:37engine they will uh put you in a higher
- 00:20:40gear ratio making your number smaller
- 00:20:42all right and remember each one of these
- 00:20:44can only have two numbers so let's do a
- 00:20:46quick check make sure we're only using
- 00:20:48two numbers we are three one in gearbox
- 00:20:50one and one one these are two numbers in
- 00:20:52gearbox one three one one
- 00:20:55three two six five
- 00:20:58this one here because this one is our
- 00:21:01reverse we have to put five six all the
- 00:21:03way through
- 00:21:04this one here it's pointing towards this
- 00:21:07one is one one and five nine as you can
- 00:21:09see we only use one one and five nine
- 00:21:11beautiful so we didn't break any rules
- 00:21:12we didn't go over the two ratios we're
- 00:21:14allowed with our boxes in game and as
- 00:21:16you can see we're very close to each of
- 00:21:18the ratios these are very very close
- 00:21:22all right as you can see all of these
- 00:21:23ratios are very close this one's within
- 00:21:26.06 of the real ratio this one is within
- 00:21:29.05 of the real ratio
- 00:21:320.03 and this one is point zero five of
- 00:21:37the real ratio and this one is about
- 00:21:410.009 of the real ratio so these are all
- 00:21:43very close and we're good to go here all
- 00:21:45right so next thing we want to do we
- 00:21:47want to get this set up and we're going
- 00:21:49to start building the microcontroller
- 00:21:50for the transmission and so to do this
- 00:21:52what we want to do here is we want to
- 00:21:54look and we want to see which number is
- 00:21:56most frequent now this one here all of
- 00:21:57this we don't have to look at this
- 00:21:59because remember we're not going up to
- 00:22:01six gear
- 00:22:02so if we go ahead and we look at this
- 00:22:04here we could if we wanted we don't have
- 00:22:06to if we go ahead and we look here we're
- 00:22:08going to look what is our most frequent
- 00:22:10number so again we're ignoring this here
- 00:22:13so we look we have three one comes up
- 00:22:15twice and one one comes up three times
- 00:22:18so 1 1 is going to be our off position
- 00:22:20three one is going to be our on position
- 00:22:23so what we're going to do is we're going
- 00:22:25to next put up here is when we want to
- 00:22:27trigger these so this is just where I
- 00:22:29usually put it is up here so I want to
- 00:22:32trigger this one here and this one here
- 00:22:35so I want to trigger uh gearbox one on
- 00:22:38first and second gear so I want to
- 00:22:39trigger it on one comma two so those are
- 00:22:42the two times that I want to trigger
- 00:22:44this now we'll end up doing it on
- 00:22:46reverse as well but we'll talk about
- 00:22:47that in a second
- 00:22:49all right so here when do I want to
- 00:22:51trigger gearbox two so let's see which
- 00:22:53one's most frequent
- 00:22:543 2 happens every time except here so
- 00:22:58the only time I want to trigger this
- 00:23:00gearbox that I want to switch it over to
- 00:23:02the other ratio is on fourth gear so up
- 00:23:04here we're going to put fourth
- 00:23:06next we're going to go here now this one
- 00:23:09only will trigger for reverse I don't
- 00:23:12know why this one formatted weird it did
- 00:23:14all right so this one only triggers for
- 00:23:16reverse now when does this one trigger
- 00:23:18we count this we have one one comes up
- 00:23:20three times so that's gonna be our
- 00:23:22default position and five nine is going
- 00:23:24to be your on position so that's in
- 00:23:26second gear and that's in fifth gear so
- 00:23:28we're going to put two comma five two
- 00:23:30comma five all right so good so we know
- 00:23:33that in order to get into first gear we
- 00:23:36need to we need to trigger
- 00:23:38um this gearbox on first gear
- 00:23:41so this gearbox gets triggered on one
- 00:23:43and two this one gets triggered on
- 00:23:44fourth gear this one gets triggered on
- 00:23:46reverse this one two five so let's go
- 00:23:48ahead and let's make a microcontroller
- 00:23:49for a transmission all right so I have a
- 00:23:51blank microcontroller here and I'm gonna
- 00:23:53go ahead and we'll click on it all right
- 00:23:54so we're gonna go ahead and name this so
- 00:23:56this is my five speed tutorial
- 00:23:57transmission all right and so this one's
- 00:23:59good for a small car we can put that too
- 00:24:01small car okay uh you know like I showed
- 00:24:05you the Ford Fiesta is not that much
- 00:24:06different than the F-150 the difference
- 00:24:08being the F-150 is much bigger more
- 00:24:10powerful engine so even it though the
- 00:24:12gear ratios are very similar the engine
- 00:24:15is more powerful and so it can move that
- 00:24:17heavier truck even though it is still a
- 00:24:20small transmission the next thing we
- 00:24:22want to do is we want to go to the logic
- 00:24:23here and we'll start adding some notes
- 00:24:25so what I'm going to do is we're going
- 00:24:27to make a manual transmission you can
- 00:24:28easily make this automatic later but I
- 00:24:30prefer manuals we're going to work with
- 00:24:31start with a manual I recommend starting
- 00:24:34learning how to use a manual
- 00:24:35transmission the reason is this if you
- 00:24:37understand a manual transmission you
- 00:24:39understand why you're shifting gears
- 00:24:41when you're shifting gears then it makes
- 00:24:43it easy for you to Tran to make your
- 00:24:45microcontroller for an automatic because
- 00:24:47you understand why you're shifting gears
- 00:24:49okay so our input here is going to be
- 00:24:52from our seat
- 00:24:53and then what we're going to do is we're
- 00:24:55going to start adding some nodes here so
- 00:24:56we have in this case four gearboxes so
- 00:24:59we're going to go ahead and make the
- 00:25:00microcontrol a little bit bigger and
- 00:25:02we'll add four gearboxes so this will be
- 00:25:04G1 for gear one this will be G2 for gear
- 00:25:082. this will be G3 for gear 3. make
- 00:25:10these outputs so they remember they're
- 00:25:12going to flip the gearboxes so this is G
- 00:25:15three and what I'm going to do is I'm
- 00:25:17just going to go like this reverse so
- 00:25:19this is my reverse gear and this is
- 00:25:21going to be gearbox four so we'll go uh
- 00:25:24output
- 00:25:25G4 we'll end up making this bigger later
- 00:25:28but uh this is going to be the
- 00:25:29introduction to show you how to make
- 00:25:31this transmission microcontroller and
- 00:25:33then later we'll go through some other
- 00:25:34stuff to work on cars but let's go ahead
- 00:25:37and let's go into the microcontroller so
- 00:25:39the next thing I'm going to do is I'm
- 00:25:40going to organize these and this will be
- 00:25:43g123 and G4 okay good so there are gears
- 00:25:47now next thing we want to do let's go
- 00:25:48ahead and put the seats we'll update
- 00:25:50the microcontroller all right I'm gonna
- 00:25:53go ahead and just uh we'll build a quick
- 00:25:54base for this so this can sit and we'll
- 00:25:56put a seat so let's go to up down and
- 00:25:58we're going to do this gear shift
- 00:26:01okay and we're gonna go reset 100 now
- 00:26:04what this does is I'll show you with a
- 00:26:07Dial Dial is a good way to test things
- 00:26:09when you make it reset 100 percent
- 00:26:12I'll show you the default Behavior first
- 00:26:15so if we go here and up down before it
- 00:26:16changes it was at 10 so is that reset 10
- 00:26:19all right let's go ahead and plug the up
- 00:26:21down into
- 00:26:23the dial which I forgot to place
- 00:26:27there we go let's plug this up down into
- 00:26:29the dial and spawn it and let's look at
- 00:26:31what this does I'm pressing the up Arrow
- 00:26:34all right as you can see it slowly goes
- 00:26:36up to one all right now I'm going to let
- 00:26:39go and it will go back to zero now I'm
- 00:26:41going to press the down arrow and it's
- 00:26:43going to slowly go down to negative one
- 00:26:46so the range is negative one to one
- 00:26:48middle position being zero okay let's
- 00:26:51quickly switch this over to what we want
- 00:26:52which is we want reset 100 all right so
- 00:26:56if we go in here and we press the up
- 00:26:58Arrow
- 00:26:58instantly it goes to one let go goes to
- 00:27:01zero instantly goes to negative one so
- 00:27:04what it does is it turns the up uh
- 00:27:07button into a switch
- 00:27:09and it turns the down arrow into a
- 00:27:11switch and when we let go of it it goes
- 00:27:14back to zero and this is how we're going
- 00:27:15to make our gear switches all right so
- 00:27:17let's go ahead and we'll go in here and
- 00:27:19we'll start building this micro curl so
- 00:27:21we're gonna start with our seat
- 00:27:22and we're going to do here is going to
- 00:27:24read a number
- 00:27:25and this number is going to be
- 00:27:274. all right so if you ever have doubt
- 00:27:31of what the numbers are come out here go
- 00:27:32to composite
- 00:27:34look at the seat as you can see it will
- 00:27:36tell you what it is so it is uh 80 is
- 00:27:39one WS is two three is Left Right 4 is
- 00:27:42up down so that's where I got that from
- 00:27:44we'll plug this into the microcontroller
- 00:27:46and we'll go back in the microcontroller
- 00:27:48all right so that's four so that's where
- 00:27:50I get four from all right next thing I'm
- 00:27:52going to do now remember one is going to
- 00:27:54be the up Arrow so up arrow is going to
- 00:27:57be to up shift into a higher gear down
- 00:27:59is going to be to downshift into a lower
- 00:28:01gear we're going to make essentially a
- 00:28:03sequential gear shift now some people
- 00:28:04say oh you know you can't shift to
- 00:28:07whatever gear you want there are very
- 00:28:08few opportunities especially in trucks
- 00:28:10where you're going to be able to skip
- 00:28:11gears you're generally going to go
- 00:28:13sequentially to your gears uh you're not
- 00:28:16supposed to be freewheeling either a lot
- 00:28:18of people will Freewheel they'll they'll
- 00:28:20stop their car at a stoplight in fourth
- 00:28:22gear you're not supposed to do that
- 00:28:24you're supposed to always shift down
- 00:28:25from fourth to third to third to second
- 00:28:28second to first you're not supposed to
- 00:28:30Freewheel that is not proper procedure
- 00:28:32and if you do it in a truck you're gonna
- 00:28:34crash your truck you have to shift the
- 00:28:35truck down so let's go ahead and next
- 00:28:38thing we want to do here is we're going
- 00:28:39to do a threshold gate here so we do
- 00:28:42threshold so when we press the up Arrow
- 00:28:45it's going to go one so we do one one
- 00:28:47and that's going to trigger this when we
- 00:28:48want to count up our gear next we're
- 00:28:51going to do control CV and we're going
- 00:28:53to make this negative one
- 00:28:55negative 1. so when we press the down
- 00:28:57arrow it's going to read negative one I
- 00:28:59showed you on the dial that's what it
- 00:29:00does okay good so that part is done next
- 00:29:03thing we do is an up down counter so the
- 00:29:05increment is going to be one so we're
- 00:29:07going to count out how many gears we
- 00:29:09have and each time we click the up it's
- 00:29:12going to count up one gear every time we
- 00:29:14click down it's going to count down one
- 00:29:16gear pretty simple we're going to leave
- 00:29:18the reset value at zero that's going to
- 00:29:19be our neutral
- 00:29:21next we're going to enable the clamp and
- 00:29:24we're going to put our minimum value in
- 00:29:26now it's not going to be zero it's going
- 00:29:27to be negative one and that's going to
- 00:29:28be for reverse reverse is going to be
- 00:29:31negative one so you're going to go
- 00:29:32you're going to start in neutral
- 00:29:34if you want to go in reverse you're
- 00:29:35going to click the down arrow it's going
- 00:29:37to put it in negative one which is going
- 00:29:39to make you go in reverse you click it
- 00:29:41up once it goes to neutral
- 00:29:42click it up again you're in first second
- 00:29:44third fourth and in this case fifth
- 00:29:47all right so that's going to go like
- 00:29:49that so what we want to do here is next
- 00:29:51thing we need to do is add a pulse now
- 00:29:54if you press the up arrow and you held
- 00:29:56the up Arrow it would go one two three
- 00:29:57four five and you would be in fifth gear
- 00:29:59you don't want that you want to click on
- 00:30:01the up arrow and you want to be able to
- 00:30:03hold that up arrow and it will not shift
- 00:30:05till the next gear until you let go and
- 00:30:07press it again so that's what a pulse
- 00:30:09does so let's go ahead and we'll put a
- 00:30:10pulse in there pulse
- 00:30:12all right and so we'll go ahead and do
- 00:30:15is we'll plug our 1 into the pulse we'll
- 00:30:17copy this pulse Ctrl c v and we'll put
- 00:30:20our negative 1 into the pulse the one
- 00:30:24goes to the up the negative one goes to
- 00:30:27the down this is our simple counter so
- 00:30:30reverse is negative one in this
- 00:30:32transmission we have five gears we just
- 00:30:34made the five gears so there's five all
- 00:30:37right and that's the start of that so
- 00:30:40that's going to count our gears as we go
- 00:30:41up and down it's going to count that
- 00:30:43through so let's play with this really
- 00:30:45quick let's go up on this we'll do logic
- 00:30:47add a node we'll go number output okay
- 00:30:52and this is our gear indicator all right
- 00:30:55so this will show us what gear we're in
- 00:30:57now you know some people need this some
- 00:30:59people like this this is how you would
- 00:31:00do it I don't really like it myself but
- 00:31:02this is up to you guys so you put your
- 00:31:04gear indicator there update that
- 00:31:07and we'll go ahead and we'll plug our
- 00:31:09gear indicator in so here's our gear
- 00:31:10indicator we're going to hook that to
- 00:31:11the dial now instead and let's go ahead
- 00:31:14and see if this is working
- 00:31:15so we're sitting in our seat we start at
- 00:31:17zero I press the up arrow and I hold it
- 00:31:20all right so notice if I didn't put the
- 00:31:22pulse in I'm presently holding the up
- 00:31:24Arrow it would go one two three four
- 00:31:26five and it would count all the way
- 00:31:27through the gears we don't want that I'm
- 00:31:29going to let go of the up Arrow it's
- 00:31:30going to stay at one I'm gonna press it
- 00:31:32again and I'm gonna hold it
- 00:31:34two
- 00:31:35I'm gonna let go I'm gonna tap it three
- 00:31:38tap it again four five all right we're
- 00:31:41all the way up now I'm gonna go four
- 00:31:43three two one zero and I'm gonna press
- 00:31:46it one more time and we're in Reverse so
- 00:31:48this is a simple counter that will allow
- 00:31:51you to be able to uh count through your
- 00:31:54gears using the up down arrows all right
- 00:31:57so let's go ahead and we'll go back in
- 00:31:58So as you can see that works so I highly
- 00:32:00recommend use a dial this will help you
- 00:32:02visualize how things are working in game
- 00:32:04all right good so the gear indicators in
- 00:32:06there all right so the next thing here
- 00:32:07we're gonna do is we're going to set up
- 00:32:08some thresholds and we're going to set
- 00:32:09these thresholds up for the different
- 00:32:12speeds we put here on our gearbox so
- 00:32:14first one we're gonna do here is reverse
- 00:32:16so that's negative one negative one next
- 00:32:19one is going to be neutral now we need
- 00:32:21to know neutral and the reason is this
- 00:32:24again A lot of people are never going to
- 00:32:25drive a manual car which I think is a
- 00:32:27shame but when you when you stop at a
- 00:32:30stoplight in a manual car you need to
- 00:32:32push the clutch pedal in which will make
- 00:32:34your clutch in game zero and the reason
- 00:32:37is simple your engine needs to turn in
- 00:32:39order to maintain compression and keep
- 00:32:40running in game this is simulated by
- 00:32:43needing to be above 2 RPS if you stop at
- 00:32:46a stop lighting game
- 00:32:48and the brakes are on on the wheels and
- 00:32:50you do not push the clutch in and turn
- 00:32:53it to zero what's going to happen is the
- 00:32:55brakes from the tires are going to stop
- 00:32:57the engine and the engine is going to
- 00:32:59stall
- 00:33:00this happens in real life you'll see
- 00:33:01people stall uh coming off of stop
- 00:33:04lights or stall stopping that means they
- 00:33:05forgot to put the clutch in or they
- 00:33:07didn't take the you know put the clutch
- 00:33:08in enough and so we need to tell the
- 00:33:11clutch to go to zero when we're in
- 00:33:13neutral or when we're stopped the auto
- 00:33:15clutch will do that for us but let's go
- 00:33:18ahead and finish the rest of these so
- 00:33:19we'll do control CV make this one one
- 00:33:23okay and we have a five speed so it's
- 00:33:25going to be five forward gear so we need
- 00:33:27four more of these paste paste
- 00:33:30paste and paste and we'll start
- 00:33:32numbering these
- 00:33:33this will be two two
- 00:33:37three three
- 00:33:39four four and this will be five five so
- 00:33:43as we go up our in our up down counter
- 00:33:46here or we go down on our down counter
- 00:33:48this will tell us what gears we need to
- 00:33:51shift in order to get these correct
- 00:33:53ratios all right so those are all our
- 00:33:55thresholds negative one for reverse zero
- 00:33:58for neutral one through five for our
- 00:33:59forward gears okay good next I'm gonna
- 00:34:01do is Boolean here now you can use ORS I
- 00:34:03recommend just doing the booleans and
- 00:34:04the reason is this often many of us will
- 00:34:07take our microcontrollers and we'll put
- 00:34:08them on a different vehicle and we'll
- 00:34:09just tweak them a little so instead of
- 00:34:11completely redoing them we'll tweak them
- 00:34:13a little bit and so if you want to turn
- 00:34:15this into an eight speed or an 18 speed
- 00:34:17transmission you can start with this
- 00:34:19already partly done and by using these
- 00:34:21booleans it allows you to have more
- 00:34:22spaces and or only has two nodes this
- 00:34:25Boolean has four you have another
- 00:34:27Boolean over here as you can see which
- 00:34:28has many more so we're going to use
- 00:34:30these booleans we'll have a bunch of
- 00:34:32empty nodes but this will allow us to
- 00:34:33then configure our gearboxes differently
- 00:34:36for different Vehicles so we're going to
- 00:34:38go in here and we'll go to operators as
- 00:34:39you can we have an or and we have x y z
- 00:34:43and W so we'll do here is we'll do X or
- 00:34:46Y or Z or W and so if any of these are
- 00:34:51selected it will go out with this
- 00:34:53because it's an or all right good so
- 00:34:55that is our first Boolean all right now
- 00:34:57what we want to do is we want to go back
- 00:34:58and we want to look at our chart all
- 00:35:00right so if we look at our chart we
- 00:35:02already did this right we said that 1 1
- 00:35:04is is the most popular option it's done
- 00:35:06three times and so that's going to be
- 00:35:08our off position so what we're doing is
- 00:35:10we're trying to figure out when do we
- 00:35:12turn these on so we already did this 3 1
- 00:35:15is turned on on first and second so
- 00:35:18first gear and second gear we turn on
- 00:35:20gearbox one all right so here's gearbox
- 00:35:22one we'll plug the Boolean in gearbox
- 00:35:24one and as we saw with the chart first
- 00:35:29and second and the reason I'll tell you
- 00:35:31in a second why I'm leaving this open it
- 00:35:33that's for the reverse we'll do reverse
- 00:35:34later so we're going to leave that one
- 00:35:36open okay
- 00:35:37so that's gearbox one is done so we'll
- 00:35:40copy this Boolean control CV now we need
- 00:35:43to do gearbox two so let's go back to
- 00:35:45chart all right so look in here the only
- 00:35:47time we trigger gearbox 2 is we trigger
- 00:35:50it on four so right down here fourth
- 00:35:52gear so three two is going to be our off
- 00:35:54position six five is our on position we
- 00:35:57trigger that on uh gear four so we're
- 00:36:00gonna come over here to gear four and
- 00:36:02I'm gonna put that on the Boolean and
- 00:36:03that goes to gear two now gear three
- 00:36:06remember we only trigger Gear 3 on
- 00:36:08reverse so gear three is gonna be
- 00:36:10triggered on reverse pretty simple there
- 00:36:14next thing we need to do is gearbox four
- 00:36:16so we'll copy this boy and control CV
- 00:36:18and again the reason I said these are
- 00:36:20empty is if I need to switch this
- 00:36:22gearbox up if I want to change my ratios
- 00:36:24if I want to make it a truck if I want
- 00:36:25to add more gears this gives me
- 00:36:28flexibility I don't have to delete all
- 00:36:30this and redo it I can just re-plug
- 00:36:32stuff in all right so let's go look back
- 00:36:34at the chart gearbox 4 here is triggered
- 00:36:37on two and five so two and five are
- 00:36:41triggered there so we'll go over here to
- 00:36:43two
- 00:36:44and five
- 00:36:46and that is going into gearbox 4. so our
- 00:36:49transmission is almost done now remember
- 00:36:51I said I left the space for reverse we
- 00:36:53need to figure out reverse now remember
- 00:36:55object at rest wants to stay at rest we
- 00:36:57need a lot of torque a lot of power in
- 00:36:59order to be able to get our vehicle
- 00:37:01moving but once it's moving we require
- 00:37:03less power so we need to make sure that
- 00:37:06our reverse gear is pretty close to our
- 00:37:09first gear so let's go ahead and we want
- 00:37:11to figure out how to set up our reverse
- 00:37:13gear so it's going to be a little bit
- 00:37:15different because remember this is going
- 00:37:17to be a one to one so reverse is going
- 00:37:19to be even lower than first which
- 00:37:21actually you'll often find and that Ford
- 00:37:22Fiesta that I was showing you guys
- 00:37:24reverse is a 4.07 to one first gear is a
- 00:37:283.84 to 1. so reverse is even lower IRL
- 00:37:31as well so what we need is we need the
- 00:37:34same gears here as in first gear as we
- 00:37:37have in Reverse so what we need to do is
- 00:37:40it's pretty simple here the only thing
- 00:37:41that's changing is this is our default
- 00:37:43gear this is our default gear this is
- 00:37:45our default gear the only one that
- 00:37:46changes is first so all we need to do is
- 00:37:49hook up the reverse to this first
- 00:37:52gearbox here to make it a three one
- 00:37:55that's it all right so here we go and
- 00:37:57all we're going to do is take the
- 00:37:58negative one and bingo plug it in right
- 00:38:00there and that is it so as you can see
- 00:38:01we are all plugged in
- 00:38:03so reverse is going to be even lower
- 00:38:06than first by a little bit like it is in
- 00:38:09real life so reverse is our lowest gear
- 00:38:12now you notice this one's not connected
- 00:38:14that's fine this is going to go out to
- 00:38:16our engine microcontroller this will
- 00:38:18tell our clutch to go to zero when we
- 00:38:21are in neutral that way you can rev a
- 00:38:24neutral and it's not going to move the
- 00:38:26wheels like it should
- 00:38:28you know some people say hey you didn't
- 00:38:30connect this one up one of these is
- 00:38:33going to be the default position
- 00:38:34remember we're only switching gearboxes
- 00:38:36when we need to get the gear ratios
- 00:38:38right there's always going to be one
- 00:38:40gear ratio that is the default positions
- 00:38:43we don't have to turn the gearboxes on
- 00:38:44and off now you could delete this I
- 00:38:46never do and the reason is this if you
- 00:38:48need to go back and tweak your gears
- 00:38:50let's say that your car is heavier than
- 00:38:52you thought it was going to be and you
- 00:38:53need to go even lower on the gears this
- 00:38:55one might change second might be
- 00:38:58defaults third might uh now have to be
- 00:39:01connected so I leave it one of these is
- 00:39:03always going to be doing nothing because
- 00:39:05that's the default gear so let's go
- 00:39:07ahead and look at third gear here so
- 00:39:08here's third as again the third is
- 00:39:10default position default position
- 00:39:12default position default position we
- 00:39:14don't need to switch anything so third
- 00:39:15gear should be disconnected and it is so
- 00:39:18we're all set all right so the next
- 00:39:20thing we do is we're going to hook them
- 00:39:21all up so G1 G2 G3 and G4 all right so
- 00:39:26now what we need to do is we need to put
- 00:39:27in the approp appropriate numbers here
- 00:39:29so what we want to do is we want to look
- 00:39:31at that chart all right so looking here
- 00:39:33as you can see we only use three one
- 00:39:36twice we use one one three times so it's
- 00:39:38going to be 1 1 3 1 for gearbox one so
- 00:39:42it's gonna be one one
- 00:39:44three one gearbox two the default
- 00:39:46position is going to be three two six
- 00:39:48five three two
- 00:39:50six five now this one is going to be six
- 00:39:53five one negative one for reverse so six
- 00:39:56five one negative one for reverse and
- 00:39:58the last gearbox here as you can see
- 00:40:00it's gonna be one one nine five so one
- 00:40:02one nine five so those are all plugged
- 00:40:05in all right so the next thing we need
- 00:40:06to do is we need to hook this up to our
- 00:40:08engine controller and this will tell our
- 00:40:10engine when we're in neutral so what we
- 00:40:13want to do here is we want to go to a uh
- 00:40:16right on off pretty simple there and we
- 00:40:19want to plug this into the right on off
- 00:40:21when we're neutral and this will be sent
- 00:40:23out to our engine so we'll add a node be
- 00:40:25a composite output and I'll go here and
- 00:40:28this one will go out to engine so we'll
- 00:40:30go to logic and this will go to engine
- 00:40:32micro and that'll be an output and so
- 00:40:36this will get plugged up there and this
- 00:40:37will tell our clutch when we are in
- 00:40:40neutral right so the next thing we want
- 00:40:42to do here is we want to integrate in an
- 00:40:45auto clutch system here now this can
- 00:40:47either go in the engine microcontroller
- 00:40:49or this can go on the transmission mic
- 00:40:50controller so this is my Pat car chassis
- 00:40:54here so if we look here it is the pat
- 00:40:57chassis that is on the workshop so you
- 00:40:59can go ahead and check that out this has
- 00:41:01engine and transmission all connected
- 00:41:03together here as you see there's the
- 00:41:05Tran this is the engine and here is the
- 00:41:07transmission and so what we want to do
- 00:41:09here is let's go ahead and let's look at
- 00:41:12the engine microcontroller here again
- 00:41:13you could go on there and you could take
- 00:41:15this into micro controller if you would
- 00:41:17want I have a bunch of microcontroller
- 00:41:18tutorials and what we want to do is we
- 00:41:20want to look at the auto clutch so if
- 00:41:23you follow some of those tutorials you
- 00:41:24can see how to do an auto clutch alright
- 00:41:26so let's quickly go through the auto
- 00:41:27clutch here and so if we look at our
- 00:41:29clutch we have an up down counter now
- 00:41:31these numbers change you can't just take
- 00:41:33any of these components and put them on
- 00:41:36any vehicle depending on the size of the
- 00:41:38vehicle how you're revving the engine if
- 00:41:39the engine is overpowered or
- 00:41:40underpowered you're going to need
- 00:41:42different numbers so you have your
- 00:41:44increment here your increment is how
- 00:41:46slowly or quickly the clutch goes in or
- 00:41:48out this Auto feathers Feathering is
- 00:41:51when you put the clutch in and out to
- 00:41:53allow some of the engine power to go
- 00:41:54through and reserve some to make sure
- 00:41:56that your main above two RPS so we have
- 00:41:59our increment here for this particular
- 00:42:01car I have .005 every different vehicle
- 00:42:04is going to be different if you notice
- 00:42:06that the clutch is going into quickly
- 00:42:09installing your vehicle you need a
- 00:42:10smaller increment if you notice the
- 00:42:12clutch is going into slowly and you have
- 00:42:15ample power
- 00:42:17then you're going to need a bigger
- 00:42:19increment so this will have to be
- 00:42:21adjusted your reset value is going to be
- 00:42:24zero zero is your clutch all the way in
- 00:42:26as if you put your foot on the clutch
- 00:42:28pedal that's going to detach your engine
- 00:42:30from your transmission which is going to
- 00:42:32allow you to stop and not stall uh clamp
- 00:42:35is enabled zero to one all right so what
- 00:42:38triggers the the up on this so there's
- 00:42:40two conditions when you want the clutch
- 00:42:42to go in one you want the RPS of your
- 00:42:45engine to have enough torque enough
- 00:42:48power to be able to get you moving so we
- 00:42:50have here is we have a greater than so
- 00:42:52if your RPS is greater than and then you
- 00:42:56want to set a property number here this
- 00:42:58will change I make all my
- 00:43:00microcontrollers like this configurable
- 00:43:02again depending on the application you
- 00:43:05have for example if you have a big truck
- 00:43:07you're going to need a lot of torque to
- 00:43:09get a lot of weight moving this is how
- 00:43:10it works in real life for example I
- 00:43:13drive tractor trailer if I have an empty
- 00:43:15trailer I don't need a lot of power
- 00:43:17because because the trailer itself is
- 00:43:18very light so I might be able to rev up
- 00:43:21to say 4 RPS and move no problem if I
- 00:43:24have a very heavy trailer I might need
- 00:43:27to rev up to 8 RPS so you're going to
- 00:43:29want to set that up here accordingly so
- 00:43:32if you start stalling all the time you
- 00:43:34want to increase this number if you're
- 00:43:36uh if you're not stalling you can
- 00:43:38decrease that number
- 00:43:40so our RPS if it is greater than 4 and
- 00:43:45so that is our first condition are we
- 00:43:47making enough torque is our RPS greater
- 00:43:49than four
- 00:43:50and
- 00:43:51if our in this case we're using the Ws
- 00:43:55key WS is 2 from our seat if our seat is
- 00:44:00greater than
- 00:44:02in this case zero so that means if we're
- 00:44:05asking to go forward so if we're
- 00:44:06pressing the W key I.E if the W key is
- 00:44:11pressed that would be greater than zero
- 00:44:13and if the RPS is greater than 4 that's
- 00:44:18going to increase our clutch pressure
- 00:44:20now when do we want to decrease that
- 00:44:22clutch pressure when it is not so when
- 00:44:26for example when our RPS goes below 4
- 00:44:29and we're getting ready to stall we want
- 00:44:31to start to reduce the clutch that will
- 00:44:34prevent us from stalling that's called
- 00:44:35Feathering the clutch you're going to
- 00:44:37take some of the some of the power away
- 00:44:39from the wheels and you're going to give
- 00:44:40it back to the engine so we just at the
- 00:44:43end of the end here we put a knot
- 00:44:46and then we're going to go in we're
- 00:44:48going to hook that up to the down
- 00:44:49counter now the part that concerns us
- 00:44:52right now is the reset so at the bottom
- 00:44:55here is you'll notice there's a reset
- 00:44:56and we reset to zero zero is putting the
- 00:44:59clutch all the way in so there are a
- 00:45:01couple conditions when we want the
- 00:45:02clutch all the way in one
- 00:45:05right
- 00:45:10so the first condition when we want the
- 00:45:12clutch all the way in when we want a
- 00:45:14zero on the clutches when we're starting
- 00:45:15we do not want the wheels connected to
- 00:45:19the engine when we're starting the
- 00:45:21engine so right here is our starter and
- 00:45:23this is our first condition so when
- 00:45:25we're starting we want to zero the
- 00:45:27clutch all right the next condition is
- 00:45:29when our RPS is less than a set value so
- 00:45:33in this case I have it set to three when
- 00:45:34we go below three RPS we no longer have
- 00:45:37enough power to be able to run both the
- 00:45:40engine and the wheels so when we go
- 00:45:42below three RPS when we're going to
- 00:45:44stall we want to also trigger the zero
- 00:45:47the last one here is coming from the
- 00:45:50transmission
- 00:45:51when we are in neutral we want to
- 00:45:54trigger that reset so this is how you
- 00:45:57would integrate the transmission into
- 00:46:00the engine microcontroller to make sure
- 00:46:02that all that works so all you're really
- 00:46:03going to do here is you're going to pass
- 00:46:06through your zero and you're going to
- 00:46:08send it to this clutch so let's go ahead
- 00:46:11and take a look at the transmission
- 00:46:13again all right so what we're going to
- 00:46:14want to do here is we're going to go to
- 00:46:16right on off and I'm going to want to
- 00:46:18take the zero for our neutral we're
- 00:46:20going to go out if you notice from that
- 00:46:22microcontroller it was channel 25 so we
- 00:46:25go channel 25 and then we would just add
- 00:46:28a logic node here this logic node is
- 00:46:31going to be
- 00:46:33a composite output we can go to engine
- 00:46:37and that's going to go to our engine
- 00:46:39microcontroller we'll go ahead we'll
- 00:46:41plug that in and so you would connect
- 00:46:44this node to the engine microcontroller
- 00:46:47and that would trigger your auto clutch
- 00:46:50to go to the zero position so that when
- 00:46:52we are in neutral our wheels will no
- 00:46:55longer be connected to the engine so
- 00:46:57that concludes the transmission tutorial
- 00:47:00hopefully you guys found that helpful if
- 00:47:02you have any questions please put it
