    we're trying to solve certain problems

    what what is it we saw needed to be

    addressed what are some of the confusing

    things out there in the practice of
  • 00:08:07
    developing requirements and what we

    believe could be a way to approach it

    that could be a little bit more
  • 00:08:14
    beneficial a little more effective
  • 00:08:17
    so i'm going to start by talking about

    the current system engineering technical
  • 00:08:20
    processes themselves
  • 00:08:23
    and i'm sure many of you are aware of
  • 00:08:25
    5288 and it's a technical standard for
  • 00:08:27
    systems engineering in general right so
  • 00:08:30
    it covers uh processes across many
  • 00:08:32
    lifecycle stages not just requirements
  • 00:08:35
    obviously but it is in there
  • 00:08:37
    they also put together a 29148
  • 00:08:41
    standard in 2018 and it is very focused
  • 00:08:44
    on requirements engineering and it tries
  • 00:08:46
    to get a little bit more focused in
  • 00:08:48
    terms of terminology concepts
  • 00:08:51
    my opinion a little less user-friendly
  • 00:08:53
    in terms of practical application so
  • 00:08:57
    what we saw then is in the cozy systems
  • 00:08:59
    engineering handbook it expands also on
  • 00:09:01
    15 288 and does define a little bit more
  • 00:09:06
    on how some of these technical processes
  • 00:09:08
    could be done
  • 00:09:10
    but what the requirement working group
  • 00:09:11
    did is decide to take that

    and write more material that can help

    the users with very specific sets of

    those technical processes

    and if you're not familiar haven't read

    it recently these are the overview of

    about and specific the technical

    processes are really um

    probably the the most

    that people think about when they think

    about developing a product right they're

    certainly the ones people think about

    when they think about developing your

    requirements developing verification

    understanding you know your transition

    and and your designs so these are the

    ones a lot of the engineers think of

    when they're developing a product and

    if you read 15 288 and the sc handbook

    you'll recognize they're done

    iteratively and recursively and this is
  • 00:09:58
    one of the areas that some folks tend to
  • 00:10:00
    miss is some of these
  • 00:10:02
    don't necessarily happen in order or
  • 00:10:04
    they can go back and we can mature them
  • 00:10:06
    further as we go through a development
  • 00:10:08
    life cycle so we're going to talk a
  • 00:10:10
    little bit how that can work with some
  • 00:10:12
    of the examples i'm going to give today

    now obviously how these processes are
  • 00:10:17
    implemented can greatly affect the
  • 00:10:19
    outcome of a product
  • 00:10:21
    one of the things i'm going to focus on

    are the first three
  • 00:10:24
    um so the technical process is here i'm

    going to give a little bit more

    attention to the first three of this

    now this material i'm presenting now is

    is your preliminary life cycle concepts

    and your business needs and what is

    what is it you're trying to do when

    where are you trying to solve a problem

    or an opportunity where are you going to

    put your money what market are you going

    and as you look on it it kind of gets

    into the part where you're starting to

    just skim the surface of what are we

    aiming for

    the concept here is you then get from

    you know this initial concept to a set

    of business requirements

    and they could be published in some sort

    seen or written a business requirement

    however this idea of starting with your

    problem statement or what opportunity

    you're solving that's real right i mean

    we do do that as various companies

    and then the next process is called the

    stakeholder needs and requirements

    technical process so it has has both

    those terms in there

    and it's really about

    understanding then

    what stakeholders are out there

    for that problem or opportunity what are

    you solving and what is it they need and

    they inform it in terms of requirement

    statements from the stakeholder
