00:00:00
[Applause]
00:00:00
good morning to all of you and what an
00:00:01
honor it is to be here at ARK I've been
00:00:03
looking forward to this this is a a
00:00:05
movement that's now worldwide that I'm
00:00:08
so delighted to be part of thank you to
00:00:10
Philip aroud and to Jordan Peterson who
00:00:13
has my unvarnished admiration and
00:00:15
amazement and to all of you for being
00:00:16
part of this movement they asked me to
00:00:19
come here and talk about well to pick up
00:00:21
where Jeff left off on the science of
00:00:25
Happiness see that's what I teach at
00:00:27
Harvard University I'm a behavioral
00:00:29
science scientist dedicated to the
00:00:31
neuroscience and and and social science
00:00:34
around happiness seems like a weird
00:00:37
subject to teach at a business school
00:00:38
perhaps but it it really isn't I teach
00:00:41
the business of life you are all
00:00:44
entrepreneurs in the the sacred
00:00:47
Enterprise of your own life you're the
00:00:49
founder you're the
00:00:51
CEO but you have to know the currency of
00:00:53
the fortune that you're trying to
00:00:55
accumulate it's not money or power or
00:00:59
pleasure or Fame admiration no it's love
00:01:03
and happiness do you know how to
00:01:06
accumulate that do you know how to bring
00:01:08
that to others well that's what I teach
00:01:11
as a matter of fact I'll be teaching
00:01:12
that tomorrow morning in the classroom
00:01:15
at the Harvard Business School and I
00:01:17
want to tell you what I'm teaching them
00:01:20
in the next 13 minutes and 50 seconds
00:01:23
I'm going to give you the entire
00:01:26
semester now not really but I'm going to
00:01:28
start with the biggest mistake that that
00:01:30
people make about happiness in this
00:01:31
world today that think it's a
00:01:34
feeling it's not the feeling of
00:01:37
happiness is like the the smell of your
00:01:40
dinner it's evidence of dinner no no
00:01:43
your happiness is something that that
00:01:45
you can actually understand change your
00:01:47
habits for and and get more of if you
00:01:50
know what it is happiness is a
00:01:52
combination of of three
00:01:55
macronutrients enjoyment satisfaction
00:01:59
and meaning
00:02:00
and when you know how to get more of
00:02:02
those you can have a better life and you
00:02:04
can fight for those things in our
00:02:06
society our culture and our public
00:02:08
policy to bring it to a world that needs
00:02:11
it so much so let me tell you how to do
00:02:14
that in just a few brief words in the
00:02:16
time that I have with you now there are
00:02:20
a lot of misconceptions about these
00:02:22
things the the mistake that people make
00:02:24
of thinking that enjoyment is the same
00:02:26
thing as pleasure it's not pleasure is
00:02:28
an animal thing enjoy joyment adds
00:02:30
people and memory to make it uniquely
00:02:33
human satisfaction is the joy that you
00:02:37
get from accomplishing something hard
00:02:40
with struggle only humans want that and
00:02:44
finally there's meaning meaning the idea
00:02:46
of the coherence of your life the
00:02:48
purpose with goals the significance that
00:02:51
your life matters the our Outlook or are
00:02:54
good practices no on the contrary
00:02:58
wonderful research that actually looks
00:03:00
at identical twins that were separated
00:03:02
at Birth and adopted into separate
00:03:04
families this is not a diabolical
00:03:06
Harvard study that did this it just
00:03:07
happen
00:03:09
naturally when we reunite these people
00:03:11
at the age of 40 and give them
00:03:13
personality tests and and and and tests
00:03:16
about all different parts of their lives
00:03:18
you find that about 50% of their
00:03:19
difference in happiness is is
00:03:22
genetic your mother literally made you
00:03:27
unhappy this is important to understand
00:03:29
because what this means is not that that
00:03:31
happiness is out of your control no on
00:03:32
the contrary the same studies show that
00:03:35
that 50% of your tendency to abuse
00:03:37
alcohol also genetic but if you came to
00:03:39
me and said H my parents drank too much
00:03:42
and my grandparents too so I guess I'm
00:03:44
going to be an alcoholic I'd say oh you
00:03:46
missed a step because you know this you
00:03:49
can turn that genetic proclivity to Zero
00:03:52
by not drinking that means habits are
00:03:54
important if you know
00:03:56
yourself so the first 50% of your
00:03:58
tendency toward happiness
00:04:00
genetic the next 25% is circumstantial
00:04:04
the good things and the bad things in
00:04:05
your life and and my students they think
00:04:07
that's everything if I can just get
00:04:10
better circumstances the job the money
00:04:13
the position the family whatever it
00:04:15
happens to be great but but that's
00:04:18
transient that's evanescent it turns out
00:04:21
that it's true that in any given moment
00:04:23
nice circumstances will drive your
00:04:25
happiness up by 25% or or down by 25% if
00:04:29
you're exper experiencing unfortunate
00:04:30
circumstances but it doesn't last what
00:04:33
you need are good habits that will give
00:04:35
you systematically better circumstances
00:04:37
and that's the last 25% which is what I
00:04:40
want to talk about with you today for
00:04:42
you and your kids and our society the
00:04:46
happiness
00:04:47
habits now these are the things that if
00:04:50
you you pay attention to them and
00:04:51
cultivate them and practice them every
00:04:53
day will give you 25% of your happiness
00:04:55
under your Direct
00:04:56
Control they will allow you to improve
00:04:59
your circumstances and manage your
00:05:02
genetic
00:05:03
proclivities but you got to know what
00:05:04
they are now I could give you 10,000
00:05:08
little habits but they're trivial
00:05:10
there's only four that really matter all
00:05:12
of the science all the Neuroscience
00:05:15
Behavioral Science unhappiness it comes
00:05:16
down to these four here they are here's
00:05:19
what you need to put in the accounts
00:05:22
every day this is your your happiness
00:05:24
Pension Plan make a deposit every day in
00:05:27
these four accounts you ready your faith
00:05:31
your family your friendship and your
00:05:34
work those are the
00:05:38
four now when I say faith I don't mean
00:05:41
my faith I'm a Roman Catholic it's
00:05:44
literally the most important thing in my
00:05:45
life but as a thank you we got some
00:05:48
Catholics
00:05:50
here but as a social scientist I will
00:05:54
tell you that my path toward happiness
00:05:57
is not necessarily the only path what
00:05:59
you need is not a particular religious
00:06:02
path again metaphysically is a different
00:06:04
matter entirely but for happiness what
00:06:08
you need is a path that will help you to
00:06:10
transcend
00:06:12
yourself see we're stuck in the Psycho
00:06:15
Drama of life every day my job my
00:06:18
commute my money my lunch my television
00:06:22
shows it's so
00:06:24
boring what we need is relief and peace
00:06:27
and perspective and the only way to do
00:06:30
that the only way to do that is to get
00:06:32
small and make the universe large to cut
00:06:35
our
00:06:36
narcissism and pay attention to the in
00:06:39
awe to what's greater than us lots of
00:06:42
ways to do that some people like to
00:06:44
study the stoic philosophers and other
00:06:47
people like to walk in nature without
00:06:49
devices for an hour before Dawn or study
00:06:52
the fugues of yan sasan Bach or to
00:06:55
practice vasana meditation or like me to
00:06:58
practice with serious ious the faith of
00:07:00
your youth but you need something to get
00:07:03
small and to not let the narcissistic
00:07:05
World take over your soul that's Faith
00:07:09
second is family family life you know
00:07:12
family life is a is a mysterious one I
00:07:15
could explain the Neuroscience the the
00:07:18
hormones and neuropeptides in the brain
00:07:20
that that tell us who are our people and
00:07:23
our people belong to us but it's still
00:07:25
like a miracle when you see those people
00:07:28
and it's like the 4th of July in America
00:07:32
inside your head how important that
00:07:34
really is and there's so many things
00:07:38
that are ripping us apart one in six
00:07:41
Americans today is not speaking to a
00:07:43
family member because of
00:07:45
politics that's falling prey to somebody
00:07:48
else's culture War don't let it happen
00:07:51
to you there's one reason to have Schism
00:07:52
with your family and that's abuse and
00:07:55
and news flash differences of political
00:07:57
opinion are not abuse
00:08:00
they're an opportunity is what they are
00:08:02
to understand each other and to live
00:08:04
with with each other in love and then of
00:08:06
course there's the culture that says
00:08:09
that marriage and kids are for
00:08:11
suckers no that's the fast rote to
00:08:14
happiness third of course is is
00:08:17
friendship friendship and and there have
00:08:20
been so many so many forces that have
00:08:23
militated against effective friendships
00:08:25
in our society Zoom friendships don't
00:08:28
work social media friendships that's not
00:08:32
real friends and then of course there's
00:08:34
the whole professionalization of
00:08:37
friendship I make a big distinction in
00:08:39
my work between real friends and deal
00:08:42
friends you know the difference if if
00:08:44
you're wondering deal friends are the
00:08:46
useful people to you real friends are
00:08:48
the useless people to you do you have
00:08:51
enough useless people in your
00:08:53
life I don't mean worthless I have them
00:08:57
too so so so
00:09:00
this is important and these are
00:09:01
relationships well there's one more
00:09:03
which is work work is so critically
00:09:06
important but I have studied work in my
00:09:08
my my profession as a social scientist I
00:09:10
was trained as an economist and I've
00:09:12
looked at different kinds of jobs and
00:09:14
different kinds of jobs don't predict
00:09:16
happiness they don't bring joy or
00:09:18
different levels of income or education
00:09:20
that doesn't do it either no no no no
00:09:21
there's only two things that predict Joy
00:09:24
from your work earning your success and
00:09:28
serving others I don't care if you're a
00:09:29
bus driver or a politician or a
00:09:33
CEO you need to earn your success and
00:09:36
serve other people that is the essence
00:09:38
of Joy from work now earning your
00:09:41
success means that you're creating value
00:09:43
with your life and value in the lives of
00:09:45
other people that means you are being
00:09:47
rewarded and acknowledged for merit and
00:09:49
hard work and personal responsibility
00:09:51
that is why there is one economic system
00:09:54
that brings joy to work and that's the
00:09:56
free enterprise system that's the only
00:09:57
one that we've ever invented
00:10:04
but more
00:10:05
importantly we need to be needed the
00:10:08
essence of dignity is to be needed the
00:10:11
essence of Despair is to be managed like
00:10:14
a liability which is why our our welfare
00:10:17
systems do such a poor job they they
00:10:20
treat people at the margins of society
00:10:23
like liabilities to manage as opposed to
00:10:25
assets to develop you need to be needed
00:10:28
in so so do I and that means in your
00:10:30
work you need to serve other people and
00:10:33
see how you're helping other people to
00:10:35
live better lives the free enterprise
00:10:39
system does that too now I talk about
00:10:42
capitalism and free enterprise a lot not
00:10:45
because I'm worried about GDP growth I
00:10:47
am but that's not why because I want
00:10:50
more human dignity because I want more
00:10:54
happiness this is the essence of the
00:10:57
four values that I'm talking about here
00:10:59
it's not a political agenda at all it's
00:11:01
an agenda of human flourishing and if
00:11:03
you want to be a happier person these
00:11:05
are the accounts in which to put your
00:11:08
your attention and time and energy AFF
00:11:10
and affection every day your faith work
00:11:13
on it seriously every single day your
00:11:14
family life your
00:11:17
friendships and your work that serves in
00:11:19
which you earn your
00:11:21
success now there's one big concern that
00:11:23
animates Ark which is not just you
00:11:25
leaving this beautiful place and having
00:11:28
this great experience and being happier
00:11:30
yourself no no no you're here because
00:11:32
you want to change society and so do I
00:11:35
well it turns out that when it comes to
00:11:38
happiness we're almost literally in a
00:11:40
world of hurt the happiness indices are
00:11:43
going in the wrong direction in almost
00:11:45
every oecd country in my country the
00:11:47
United States we've seen this secular
00:11:50
decline in happiness going back to about
00:11:52
1990 with big dips that have happened
00:11:56
especially since the turn of the century
00:11:58
why
00:11:59
people pay attention to the weather as
00:12:02
it were the weather of Happiness the
00:12:04
storms of Happiness the Corona virus
00:12:06
epidemic the financial
00:12:08
crisis the onset of social media and
00:12:11
those things are all bad don't get me
00:12:13
wrong but we tend to neglect the climate
00:12:15
of happiness and that's a that's a
00:12:18
that's a bigger problem that little by
00:12:20
little by little is driving down the
00:12:22
well-being of people all over the world
00:12:24
today and you know what it comes from
00:12:27
the same thing that will ruin your
00:12:28
happiness
00:12:30
a lack of the big four look around what
00:12:33
will you see for people under 35 today a
00:12:36
decline in faith the year I was born in
00:12:39
the United States 1% had no religious
00:12:42
affiliation today is
00:12:45
34% look around people are saying
00:12:47
they're lonelier than they've ever been
00:12:49
they're walking away from Marriage
00:12:50
they're not having children they don't
00:12:52
have a vocational sense of their work
00:12:54
and they're turning against the free
00:12:55
enterprise system those are the
00:12:57
stakes look if we want to be happier
00:13:01
people and we want to live in a happier
00:13:04
Society those are the things to fight
00:13:07
for those are the things to stand up for
00:13:10
don't let anybody
00:13:12
say that you're you're fighting for
00:13:14
Faith and family and and community and
00:13:18
friendship and the free enterprise
00:13:19
system because it's all about your
00:13:20
politics or it's all about the tax rate
00:13:24
no no no no no this is what the world
00:13:27
needs
00:13:29
pay attention to these things in your
00:13:37
life if you pay attention to these
00:13:40
things in your life here's what I
00:13:41
promise you the same thing I promis my
00:13:44
students the same same things I practice
00:13:47
myself you will get happier for the rest
00:13:51
of your life furthermore if you leave
00:13:54
here and you you work for these
00:13:56
institutions more faith in our Society a
00:14:00
greater sense of family values with more
00:14:02
marriage and more babies cuz babies are
00:14:13
awesome with closer friends with more
00:14:17
coherent communities with a capitalist
00:14:20
system that brings everybody in from the
00:14:22
margins for more
00:14:23
opportunity and where we're dedicated to
00:14:26
loving and serving each other that's how
00:14:28
the world gets better that is not a
00:14:30
political agenda that's an agenda for
00:14:32
greater World happiness and we need to
00:14:34
be part of it join me thank you
