thought about motivation as a unitary

concept that is they see it as something

that differs only in

amount you can have less motivation or

motivation and of of course our teachers

our bosses our parents want us to have

more

motivation for the behaviors they want

us to

do it's a simple and straightforward way

of thinking about
00:01:46
motivation and I have no doubt that if

you measured the amount of a person's
00:01:53
motivation you could predict the amount
00:01:55
of that person's
00:01:58
Behavior but I've never believed that

the amount of behavior was the most
00:02:04
important
00:02:06
thing what I think is the important
00:02:09
thing actually is the quality of
00:02:13
behavior not the
00:02:16
quantity and you can't get to that by
00:02:20
looking at the quantity of
00:02:24
motivation let me give you an example to
00:02:26
illustrate the point you have two women
00:02:30
who work for you recently you found a
00:02:33
bunch of new material that seemed very
00:02:36
relevant to your work so you give the
00:02:40
material to both of these women and you
00:02:43
ask them to spend two hours learning it
00:02:46
they do and they both put in
00:02:49
considerable effort the first person
00:02:53
goes through the
00:02:55
material and then through it again and
00:02:58
through it again and during the 2 hours
00:03:01
she memorizes every single fact that's
00:03:04
contained within
00:03:07
it she did a lot of
00:03:09
learning but the second person reads it
00:03:14
and she's looking for the themes that
00:03:17
are emerging she's addressing it in a
00:03:21
more conceptual way trying to understand
00:03:25
the big picture what is this really
00:03:28
about and along the way she learns a few
00:03:33
facts but she's interested in knowing
00:03:36
how the facts fit together and how they
00:03:39
relate to the big
00:03:41
picture the quality of their learning
00:03:46
even though it may have been exactly the
00:03:48
same amount was very different and you
00:03:52
can't explain that with the amount of
00:03:55
motivation for more than 30 years my
00:03:59
best friend Rich Ryan and I have been

working on a theory of motivation that

we call self-determination theory sdt

short and one of the central tenants of

sdt is that you have to differentiate

types of

motivation and the distinction that is

most important for us is between

controlled motivation and autonomous

motivation controlled motivation is

essentially the carrot and stick when

you're controlled in your motivation
00:04:36
you've either been seduced into behaving
00:04:39
perhaps by a offer of a reward or
00:04:43
coerced into behaving perhaps by threat
00:04:46
of punishment but in either of those
00:04:49
cases you feel a lot of pressure and
00:04:52
within you is a sense of tension and
00:04:56
anxiety and all of those things have
00:05:00
negative
00:05:01
consequences for your performance and
00:05:06
well-being there's another thing about
00:05:08
controlled motivation that's
00:05:12
interesting and that is that when you're
00:05:15
motivation is controlled you tend to
00:05:18
take the shortest path to the desired
00:05:24
outcomes remember

Enron the directors of that company had

the goal of making the company stronger
00:05:35
and more

productive so they gave stock options to

the top managers as a way of motivating

them to achieve the

goals well those managers were pretty

clever fellows and it didn't take them
00:05:52
long to realize that the shortest path
00:05:55
to the outcome of making gazillions of
00:05:58
dollars from their stock options was to
00:06:02
artificially inflate the value of the
00:06:04
company's
00:06:06
stock and we all know how well that
00:06:09
worked
00:06:10
out in contrast we have autonomous
00:06:14
motivation when you're autonomously
00:06:17
motivated you will experience a full set
00:06:21
of
00:06:22
volition willingness and choice about
00:06:25
what you're doing at the moment you're
00:06:28
doing it you you're endorsing the doing
00:06:31
of that
00:06:33
behavior autonomous motivation comes in
00:06:36
two flavors the first has to do with
00:06:39
interest and
00:06:41
enjoyment if you're interested in some
00:06:44
activity and you enjoy doing it the
00:06:49
motivation is right there inside you
00:06:52
ready to come out and move you into
00:06:55
action have you ever watched a

2-year-old play

2-year-olds love to

play and when was the last time you
00:07:07
heard a parent ask how do I motivate my

2-year-old to play it's a silly question

the motivation is right there when

you're interested and enjoy the

activity the other type of um autonomous

motivation has to do with your deeply
00:07:30
held values and beliefs if you really

have something that's important to you

something that you truly value you're
00:07:39
perfectly willing to engage in the
00:07:41
behaviors that are consistent with that
00:07:45
so both of these things these two types
00:07:48
of autonomous motivation are all about
00:07:52
being fully willing to
00:07:55
behave there are literally hundreds and
00:07:59
hundreds and hundreds now of scientific

investigations that have shown when
00:08:07
you're autonomously motivated your
00:08:10
behavior will be more
00:08:12
creative you'll be a better Problem

Solver when you encounter obstacles

you'll be able to think outside the box

and figure out what to do about them

your performance will be better

particularly euristic activities and

your emotions will be much more

positive and very

importantly autonomous motivation is

associated with both physical and

psychological

health so I'm arguing that autonomous

motivation is a much more effective

motivation than the carrot and stick the

controlled motivation so what does

autonomy support mean which is the way

of getting people to be more

autonomously

motivated You Begin by taking their

perspective if you're dealing with a

child with an employee whoever it

happens to

is the internal frame of reference and

friends there are people that

argue that in order to have a high

quality

relationship you have to relinquish your

autonomy in the service of the

diet but in fact the research shows that

you won't have a high quality relation

reltionship if you don't feel autonomous

relationships let me ask you

partners do you give to them
