- 00:04:31I'm so happy to be here I can't even
- 00:04:33tell you well let's just jump right into
- 00:04:35it because you have written the book on
- 00:04:38both Charisma and body language and so I
- 00:04:41want to start with what is charisma and
- 00:04:45why does it matter what people don't
- 00:04:47realize is that Charisma more than any
- 00:04:49other attribute is the single most
- 00:04:51important aspect of you being successful
- 00:04:53it helps in your relationships it helps
- 00:04:56you professionally helps people take you
- 00:04:57seriously it helps you also feel more
- 00:05:00confident and purposeful in your
- 00:05:01interactions so Charisma is that missing
- 00:05:04ingredient that we need to trigger or
- 00:05:06activate our success wow I mean you hear
- 00:05:09so much about confidence you hear about
- 00:05:11extroverts versus introverts but how is
- 00:05:15it that Charisma impacts all those
- 00:05:18things more than your personality or
- 00:05:20confidence when research looks at highly
- 00:05:22charismatic people they find that we are
- 00:05:25looking for people who are signaling
- 00:05:27High Charisma because it shows all those
- 00:05:29other things highly charismatic people
- 00:05:31are confident they are competent they
- 00:05:34are warm they are likable and so the
- 00:05:36most amazing aspect of Charisma is it
- 00:05:38can be learned it is not an innate trait
- 00:05:41you don't have to be born with it or not
- 00:05:42that anyone can be can learn how to be
- 00:05:44more charismatic through a very specific
- 00:05:46set of cues
- 00:05:47that's crazy and you you say that you
- 00:05:51were very awkward before you leveraged
- 00:05:55all the cues you're about to teach us
- 00:05:57will you tell us a little bit about what
- 00:05:58you struggled with
- 00:06:00so what's funny about Charisma I've
- 00:06:02always been fascinated by this trait I'm
- 00:06:03a recovering awkward person
- 00:06:06Charisma does not come naturally to me
- 00:06:08I've always been fascinated by the cool
- 00:06:10kids you know I watch them and I'm like
- 00:06:12oh how do they know what to do and so I
- 00:06:15was for many years trapped by this
- 00:06:17mistaken belief that to be charismatic
- 00:06:19you have to be extroverted you have to
- 00:06:22be bubbly you have to be life of the
- 00:06:23party and I am not an extrovert and so I
- 00:06:26always thought well I guess I can't have
- 00:06:28it it's an innate trait it could be
- 00:06:29extroverted but research actually finds
- 00:06:31is that Charisma has nothing to do with
- 00:06:34your extroversion your attractiveness
- 00:06:36your athleticism even your intelligence
- 00:06:39the actual definition of Highly
- 00:06:40charismatic people what makes them
- 00:06:42different is they set send a very
- 00:06:44specific set of social signals
- 00:06:46specifically they are constantly
- 00:06:49signaling High warmth so trust
- 00:06:52likability friendliness along with this
- 00:06:54is the key a balance of high competence
- 00:06:57capability power effect
- 00:07:00and what's magical about this is if
- 00:07:03you're with someone and you are drawn
- 00:07:05into them you immediately are able to
- 00:07:08answer two questions I can trust you and
- 00:07:10I can rely on you and so highly
- 00:07:12charismatic people that's what they're
- 00:07:14signaling warmth and competence at all
- 00:07:16times wow okay so let me see if I just
- 00:07:20can bottom line this yes
- 00:07:23so charisma if you have Charisma or you
- 00:07:27display Charisma I guess is what I
- 00:07:29should say yes if you display Charisma
- 00:07:32other people are left with the
- 00:07:35impression that they can trust you
- 00:07:37and that they can count on you is that
- 00:07:39right that is exactly right and the
- 00:07:41funny the hard part about this is you
- 00:07:43can be the warmest most competent person
- 00:07:45in the world but if you don't show those
- 00:07:48signals the world does not believe you
- 00:07:50and this comes from amazing research out
- 00:07:52of Princeton University which found that
- 00:07:54under signaling so not signaling enough
- 00:07:57and this is what happens I think with
- 00:07:59very smart people so most of my students
- 00:08:01are off the charts intelligence High
- 00:08:04Achievers and they think oh my smarts
- 00:08:06will speak for me right I'm really smart
- 00:08:09I can make it through anything I'm super
- 00:08:10prepared I have great answers and the
- 00:08:12problem is they under signal the warmth
- 00:08:15and competence cues and when Dr Fisk
- 00:08:17found the creator of This research she
- 00:08:19found that without enough warmth people
- 00:08:22do not believe your competence
- 00:08:24so the problem of smart people is they
- 00:08:26think their smarts work for them but if
- 00:08:28they're not using the right signals the
- 00:08:30world literally cannot believe them wow
- 00:08:34that's so so is this why Charisma
- 00:08:37matters
- 00:08:38so I think of Charisma like a lubricant
- 00:08:40right so when we're in Social
- 00:08:45is not exactly the word I was that I
- 00:08:48thought that or the metaphor I thought
- 00:08:49you were going to use okay so Charisma
- 00:08:52is a social lubricant everybody okay I
- 00:08:57need to move you know because listen my
- 00:09:01interactions my social interactions
- 00:09:02before I learn this science were like
- 00:09:04the Opposites mood they were crunchy
- 00:09:06like not in a good way right okay so you
- 00:09:08said you were awkward give us an example
- 00:09:09come on Vanessa I'm a recovering other
- 00:09:12person so awkwardness let's talk
- 00:09:13awkwardness is my favorite topics
- 00:09:15awkwardness dresses up
- 00:09:17in different ways so my awkwardness and
- 00:09:19everyone has different things so I'm
- 00:09:20curious no if you have any awkwardness
- 00:09:22how it dresses up some people they feel
- 00:09:24awkward because of fear Their Fear being
- 00:09:26rejected fear of being criticized fear
- 00:09:28of saying something silly or sounding
- 00:09:30stupid and so their awkwardness will
- 00:09:32dress up as shutting down so for me my
- 00:09:35awkwardness I'm an overthinker I'm the
- 00:09:37person who I get in bed at the end of
- 00:09:39the night and I literally rethink every
- 00:09:40conversation I've had the whole day
- 00:09:43right or like I I over analyze my
- 00:09:45answers before I even say anything which
- 00:09:47makes me a terrible conversationalist
- 00:09:48listener so my awkwardness would make me
- 00:09:51Shut in shut down and so my introverts
- 00:09:53listening this is often what happens
- 00:09:55when you feel awkward you're afraid of a
- 00:09:56silence or being judged you shut in you
- 00:09:59close down you stop talking
- 00:10:01other people my extroverts their
- 00:10:03awkwardness dresses up as something else
- 00:10:04their awkwardness dresses up as showing
- 00:10:07off over the top being a drama queen
- 00:10:10talking too much semi-extroverted
- 00:10:13awkward friends they'll say sometimes I
- 00:10:15ca I just can't stop talking
- 00:10:17literally my mouth just keeps going and
- 00:10:20so awkwardness is this really
- 00:10:21interesting way that we try to cover our
- 00:10:23fear and so when I say I'm a recovering
- 00:10:25awkward person I've had to conquer a lot
- 00:10:27of internal fear to be able to have
- 00:10:30interactions that I desperately
- 00:10:31desperately want to have that could be
- 00:10:34in a professional setting sharing my
- 00:10:36ideas but it also could be just trying
- 00:10:38to make good friends trying to be open
- 00:10:39with my partner and so I think that
- 00:10:42Charisma is this lubricant because
- 00:10:44awkwardness makes our relationships our
- 00:10:46conversations our communication crunchy
- 00:10:49awkward halty we talk too much we talk
- 00:10:53too little there's an awkward silence we
- 00:10:55don't know what to do with our hands
- 00:10:56right we're like what do I do with my
- 00:10:58body language we make weird faces we
- 00:11:01awkwardly nervous laugh
- 00:11:03so my my goal with Charisma what I've
- 00:11:05found is that it's a smoother it's a
- 00:11:07lubricant which I just I we have to
- 00:11:10stick with that metaphor well it's
- 00:11:11hilarious and it also makes it it you
- 00:11:14when you use the word crunchy
- 00:11:16about those moments when you feel
- 00:11:18awkward that makes a lot of sense to me
- 00:11:20yeah yeah because whether you're an over
- 00:11:23talker overshare nervous laugh
- 00:11:26interrupting people because you're
- 00:11:29extroverted but you feel afraid of how
- 00:11:32people are gonna view you or whether you
- 00:11:34withdraw
- 00:11:36because you're afraid
- 00:11:38that crunchiness is that sort of
- 00:11:40disruption you feel internally
- 00:11:43and so I love this idea that Charisma
- 00:11:47which you say is a skill that anybody
- 00:11:51can develop that charisma
- 00:11:54helps you be yourself and it helps you
- 00:11:58be more influential and it helps you
- 00:12:01enjoy social settings whether you're
- 00:12:04introverted or extroverted that's what
- 00:12:06that's what I'm kind of getting from
- 00:12:07this oh that's it and so I think that
- 00:12:09what we're looking for here is a lot of
- 00:12:11people talk about confidence and I love
- 00:12:13confidence but I am not naturally
- 00:12:15confident so what would happen is I
- 00:12:17would say just be more confident like I
- 00:12:19would you know I'd be like trying to
- 00:12:20Mantra myself into it and if you tell
- 00:12:22someone who's awkward to just stop being
- 00:12:25awkward it doesn't work so it just makes
- 00:12:27you more Awkward I think because then
- 00:12:29you're now focused on the fact that
- 00:12:30you're awkward it's like a Meta Meta
- 00:12:32right like I worry that I'm a warrior
- 00:12:34and that makes me worry so right so like
- 00:12:38it's like a horrible meta so what I say
- 00:12:40is okay I like confidence but let's put
- 00:12:42it to the side for a second let's talk
- 00:12:43about being purposeful
- 00:12:45purposeful is much more impactful and
- 00:12:48active it's an active emotion okay so if
- 00:12:51I say I want to show up in this
- 00:12:53interaction as highly charismatic I want
- 00:12:55to be my warmest self and my most
- 00:12:57confident self and I want to clearly
- 00:12:58signal with purpose the other person I
- 00:13:01am trustworthy and likable but I can
- 00:13:03also get it done I'm powerful and
- 00:13:05capable the key here is the balance
- 00:13:08most of us have an imbalance so there's
- 00:13:11four segments of the population that's
- 00:13:13what the research finds there's The
- 00:13:14Sweet Spot of Highly charismatic people
- 00:13:17high warmth High competence that's the
- 00:13:19rare birds Among Us Now can you give us
- 00:13:21an example of somebody who is highly
- 00:13:24charismatic let's do the classic Oprah
- 00:13:27okay Oprah is highly charismatic and
- 00:13:30here's why she can be in an interview
- 00:13:32and she can make the other person feel
- 00:13:35so comfortable they share their darkest
- 00:13:38secrets that's warmth that's trust she
- 00:13:41can cry with the other person she can
- 00:13:42mimic their facial expressions she her
- 00:13:45warmth literally draws out other
- 00:13:47people's warmth however you also take
- 00:13:50her very seriously you know she is smart
- 00:13:53she knows her answers you can't sneak
- 00:13:55something by her and that's her
- 00:13:56signaling I'm competent I'm gonna make
- 00:13:59sure that I get to the truth here you
- 00:14:02can rely on me to ask the hard questions
- 00:14:04that's the perfect example what Oprah
- 00:14:06does and what most Charizard people do
- 00:14:08which I want to teach everyone who's
- 00:14:09listening how to do is you can use
- 00:14:12Charisma like a dial
- 00:14:14it's just like a thermostat so in some
- 00:14:16situations when you want to dial up a
- 00:14:18little bit extra warmth you can use more
- 00:14:20warmth cues and Oprah does this
- 00:14:22exceptionally well and her hard-hitting
- 00:14:24interviews she'll dial up competence
- 00:14:26she'll hit them with the hard questions
- 00:14:28go watch her interview with Lance
- 00:14:30Armstrong I talk about Lance Armstrong a
- 00:14:32lot in the book I pick on him a lot
- 00:14:34her interview with Lance Armstrong she
- 00:14:36is high competence she has just enough
- 00:14:38warmth to make him feel comfortable but
- 00:14:40she asks hard questions versus some for
- 00:14:43other interviews she's dialing up warmth
- 00:14:45she wants to make the other person feel
- 00:14:46comfortable so that's an example of
- 00:14:49someone who's very a nice balance and
- 00:14:51kind of uses her warmth and competence
- 00:14:54as a dial
- 00:14:55let's look at for example Steve Jobs
- 00:14:57so Steve Jobs is zero warmth am I no
- 00:15:01zero warmth zero jobs
- 00:15:04the guy's a jerk zero warrant so he is
- 00:15:08the perfect example of high high high
- 00:15:11competence he has he's constantly
- 00:15:14signaling take me seriously I'm powerful
- 00:15:17and most importantly what highly smart
- 00:15:19people don't realize is if they over
- 00:15:21signal competence people see them as
- 00:15:24cold intimidating not a collaborator not
- 00:15:28a team player hard to talk to so yes he
- 00:15:31he was brilliant but his lack of warmth
- 00:15:34made people feel like he wasn't a
- 00:15:36collaborator he wasn't a good team
- 00:15:37player and his legacy is changing the
- 00:15:39world but also being not kind
- 00:15:42so that's an example of high competence
- 00:15:43my highly smart people my Engineers my
- 00:15:46really technically brilliant folks they
- 00:15:48often get trapped in high competence
- 00:15:50because they don't know how to signal
- 00:15:52warmth by the way they might have all
- 00:15:54the intention to be a collaborator but
- 00:15:57we are not taught how to signal warmth
- 00:15:59and so they go well I guess I don't know
- 00:16:00how to do that
- 00:16:02so that's wow okay competence that's one
- 00:16:04bucket by the way so if you're as you're
- 00:16:07listening I want you to think about what
- 00:16:08sounds like you what feels like you so
- 00:16:10do you feel like you have the balance do
- 00:16:12you feel like no you're off the charts
- 00:16:14and competence you know you're high
- 00:16:16incompetence if people always think
- 00:16:18you're in charge
- 00:16:20you know your high incompetence if
- 00:16:21people have ever told you that you're
- 00:16:22intimidating or hard to talk to you know
- 00:16:25that you're in a relationship or have a
- 00:16:27partner who's high in competence if they
- 00:16:30constantly Google fact check you
- 00:16:33so highly competent folks their mission
- 00:16:36is to get it right
- 00:16:38they are very uh dominated by the idea
- 00:16:41of get it right get the facts and so
- 00:16:43they'll be in a conversation with you
- 00:16:44and be like let me Google fact check
- 00:16:45that let me just see if that's that's
- 00:16:47right do they share their emotions if
- 00:16:50they're high competent
- 00:16:52usually less they're much less
- 00:16:54comfortable sharing their emotions
- 00:16:55because vulnerability sharing emotions
- 00:16:57is an aspect of warmth
- 00:16:59so that is one way that competent people
- 00:17:01can hack warmth is sharing more of their
- 00:17:04emotions but usually they don't like
- 00:17:05that as much because emotions aren't
- 00:17:08correct right it's hard to be right with
- 00:17:11emotions so they'll often the reason why
- 00:17:13a highly compensated partner I have one
- 00:17:15of those is I'm going to use the word
- 00:17:17afraid of emotions or uncomfortable with
- 00:17:19emotions is because it can't be fact
- 00:17:21checked right
- 00:17:23if someone says as a partner I feel
- 00:17:26upset with you how do you verify that
- 00:17:28how do you fix it where's the solution a
- 00:17:31highly competent partner they love
- 00:17:32solving things right
- 00:17:34you come to them and you're like I'm
- 00:17:36just having a bad day and they're like
- 00:17:37let me fix that for you and you're like
- 00:17:39I don't want you to fix it I just want
- 00:17:41you to listen they're like or no I don't
- 00:17:44know how to do that because they're
- 00:17:45fixers got it so highly common people
- 00:17:48you have that super strength of of
- 00:17:49getting it right being fixers warm folks
- 00:17:52my warm folks so my highly warm folks
- 00:17:54you are filled with empathy your
- 00:17:57cheerleaders your supporters
- 00:17:59your mission so if competent people want
- 00:18:01to get it right highly warm people want
- 00:18:04to be liked they want everyone to feel
- 00:18:07good they want everyone to feel
- 00:18:08comfortable typically highly warm folks
- 00:18:11their super strength is empathy
- 00:18:13nurturing making people feel loved and
- 00:18:15warm but they often give too much of
- 00:18:17themselves in sacrifice of being liked
- 00:18:20got it so like people pleasing doormats
- 00:18:23is what you're talking about that's the
- 00:18:25far end people is what they struggle
- 00:18:27with and so I think that highly warm
- 00:18:29folks in the workplace
- 00:18:31this is the other really important thing
- 00:18:33to understand is if you're highly warm
- 00:18:36you are fighting a battle in yourself
- 00:18:38which is your desire to be liked gets in
- 00:18:41the way of your need to be respected
- 00:18:43okay stop
- 00:18:46I need everybody to hear that if you
- 00:18:49default
- 00:18:51and you are too warm especially at work
- 00:18:55your need to be liked is getting in the
- 00:18:59way of your need to be respected yeah
- 00:19:03and when you are too focused on getting
- 00:19:08it right and too focused on being smart
- 00:19:10and too focused on dominating the
- 00:19:14conversation or the knowledge Bank your
- 00:19:16need to be right
- 00:19:18is dominate how did you say your need to
- 00:19:23be right right is getting in the way of
- 00:19:25your need to be liked yes yes your need
- 00:19:28to be right is getting in the way of
- 00:19:30your need to be liked that even Rhymes
- 00:19:32that's amazing I
- 00:19:34want to go back to Something in the very
- 00:19:36beginning that we were talking about yes
- 00:19:38so
- 00:19:40when I asked you what is charisma yeah
- 00:19:43and you said it has nothing to do with
- 00:19:46personality it has nothing to do with
- 00:19:49introversion or extroversion it is not
- 00:19:52about being confident
- 00:19:54that Charisma is something that you
- 00:19:56display to other people correct yes and
- 00:19:59Charisma matters because
- 00:20:04if you have charisma
- 00:20:07people trust you they like you they
- 00:20:10count on you which I would think means
- 00:20:13it makes you in more influential
- 00:20:15it makes you more successful it makes
- 00:20:18you have greater influence is that what
- 00:20:22the benefits of Charisma are
- 00:20:24influence impact and income so the
- 00:20:28reason why hold on hold on so Charisma
- 00:20:32impacts the three eyes the three eyes
- 00:20:35all three of them why
- 00:20:37if you are warm and competent you are
- 00:20:39less likely to be underestimated you're
- 00:20:41less likely to be dismissed than doubted
- 00:20:43why we are attracted to highly
- 00:20:45charismatic people because Charisma is
- 00:20:48contagious and they have actually proven
- 00:20:50Us in the lab the more charismatic you
- 00:20:52are the more you clearly and
- 00:20:54purposefully I keep using the word
- 00:20:55purposeful on purpose the more clearly
- 00:20:58you signal warmth and competence the
- 00:21:00more contagious you are we like to be
- 00:21:03around warm competent people because
- 00:21:05they make us more warm and competent and
- 00:21:09so non-verbal signals vocal signals
- 00:21:11verbal signals we are constantly aware
- 00:21:13of because we want to catch them so the
- 00:21:16reason why we're drawn to people who are
- 00:21:19the in that influence peace that
- 00:21:21influencer impact piece is because we
- 00:21:23are influenced by people who we want to
- 00:21:24be contagious with we also want to be
- 00:21:27more warm and competent so if we're
- 00:21:29around someone who's warm and competent
- 00:21:30it makes us feel like our best selves if
- 00:21:34you think about the most the most
- 00:21:35charismatic person you know so just
- 00:21:37think about them for a second they make
- 00:21:39you feel better they make you feel like
- 00:21:41your best self that's the difference I
- 00:21:43think between for example a highly
- 00:21:46charismatic person and a narcissist
- 00:21:47right like this is not just about
- 00:21:50confidence it's about someone who
- 00:21:52actually is positively infectious and
- 00:21:55they've proven this with both negative
- 00:21:57and positive cues so for example um Dr
- 00:22:00Matthew Lieberman at UCLA
- 00:22:02he flashed people a fear micro
- 00:22:03expression so fear micro expression is
- 00:22:06when we raise our eyebrows up our
- 00:22:08forehead we widen our eyes to our white
- 00:22:10show and we take in a deep breath so we
- 00:22:12go
- 00:22:13yes
- 00:22:14so that expression if he flashes that
- 00:22:16expression to someone in a fmri their
- 00:22:19amygdala where they process fear it
- 00:22:21begins to activate we catch the fear
- 00:22:23literally just seeing someone with a
- 00:22:25fear face makes us feel afraid
- 00:22:28the most important part of this
- 00:22:30experiment though is the moment that
- 00:22:32someone labeled the fear so in their
- 00:22:35head or out loud said fear it
- 00:22:38deactivated their amygdala in other
- 00:22:40words being aware of the cues that are
- 00:22:43being sent to us both negative and
- 00:22:44positive makes us aware of who is
- 00:22:47infecting us so that influence that
- 00:22:49impact is that highly charismatic people
- 00:22:52are so clear with their signals they're
- 00:22:54it's like they're gifting another Oprah
- 00:22:56reference they're gifting warmth for you
- 00:22:58competence for you Charisma for you and
- 00:23:02not charismatic people people who are
- 00:23:04anxious
- 00:23:05afraid awkward
- 00:23:08they are signaling negative cues that's
- 00:23:10why we don't want to be around them we
- 00:23:12don't want to catch that fear right like
- 00:23:14we don't want that fear and so we're
- 00:23:16like whoa I don't like those signals and
- 00:23:19so we avoid them as much as we possibly
- 00:23:20can you know what I love about your
- 00:23:22research
- 00:23:23what I love is that first of all you're
- 00:23:26about to teach us all
- 00:23:28how to become more charismatic you're
- 00:23:31also about to give us hacks related to
- 00:23:35body language and getting intentional
- 00:23:37about what we're displaying and
- 00:23:39signaling but what I also love about
- 00:23:42your research is that I need everybody
- 00:23:46listening to understand something
- 00:23:49right now you are unintentionally
- 00:23:53sending signals and cues to people
- 00:23:55that's it
- 00:23:57you are walking around and whether it's
- 00:24:01a negative mood or it's anxiety or it's
- 00:24:04insecurity or it's awkwardness or you're
- 00:24:08so focused on being right that you don't
- 00:24:10realize that you're sending signals and
- 00:24:12cues that make people not like you and
- 00:24:15not trust you or you're so focused on
- 00:24:18being liked and that you're sending
- 00:24:21these signals of being a warm pushover
- 00:24:23which is why you're never respected and
- 00:24:26why you're passed over at work and so
- 00:24:28what I love about this research is that
- 00:24:32you're helping us focus on two factors
- 00:24:36that you can display
- 00:24:39that will increase influence impact and
- 00:24:43income and it doesn't matter whether
- 00:24:45you're shy or whether you're bossy these
- 00:24:49strategies are going to work for all of
- 00:24:50us one thing I would love for you to
- 00:24:52talk about before we talk about the cues
- 00:24:55is this so in that study that you cited
- 00:24:59from Princeton they also found that
- 00:25:05Charisma accounts for 82 percent of how
- 00:25:11people evaluate you so can you unpack
- 00:25:14that because I think it's really
- 00:25:16important for us to understand
- 00:25:19this is not only a good idea because
- 00:25:21you're going to make more money be more
- 00:25:24influential and make a bigger impact
- 00:25:26based on the science
- 00:25:29this is how people view you
- 00:25:31and so can you unpack this for us so I
- 00:25:34was also shocked by that number by the
- 00:25:36way it's very rare to see a number that
- 00:25:38big in science right especially because
- 00:25:40if I were to ask someone how do you want
- 00:25:42to be perceived you're going to get a
- 00:25:44list of 100 adjectives funny extroverted
- 00:25:48bubbly attractive whatever actually when
- 00:25:51someone is interacting with us and by
- 00:25:52the way this is not just in person this
- 00:25:54is on your LinkedIn profile
- 00:25:56in zoom on the phone in chats in slack
- 00:26:00in DMS in your email inbox people are
- 00:26:04using warmth and competent signals to
- 00:26:06make up 82 of their judgment of you okay
- 00:26:09stop everybody did you just hear that
- 00:26:12people are using warmth and confidence
- 00:26:15which are the two things that make up
- 00:26:17your charisma
- 00:26:2082 percent of how people judge you
- 00:26:23evaluate you size you up decide to hire
- 00:26:26or date you has to do with whether or
- 00:26:28not you're warm or competent that's
- 00:26:30bananas it's bananas and it's not just
- 00:26:32your first impression it's actually
- 00:26:34every single impression so yes your
- 00:26:37first impression is important but even
- 00:26:38if you don't feel you've had a good
- 00:26:39first impression that's okay we are
- 00:26:41re-evaluating this on every Zoom call if
- 00:26:44someone sees your name pop up in their
- 00:26:46inbox they're also wondering is a is
- 00:26:49this a warm and competent email in other
- 00:26:50words can I trust this email can I rely
- 00:26:52on this email the more warm and
- 00:26:54competent your email is the faster
- 00:26:55response rates you're going to get we as
- 00:26:57humans have a really hard time
- 00:26:59responding to connecting with building
- 00:27:02rapport with being impacted by people
- 00:27:04who under signal or people who signal in
- 00:27:06an imbalanced way so what we're talking
- 00:27:09about here that 82 percent is making it
- 00:27:11easier for people to interact with you I
- 00:27:15believe that your warmth and competence
- 00:27:17tells the world how they should treat
- 00:27:19you
- 00:27:20wow is what I believe Vanessa you want
- 00:27:22to hear what I believe Vanessa I believe
- 00:27:24we all have a huge blind spot when it
- 00:27:27comes to what we're signaling other
- 00:27:28people that you may think you know how
- 00:27:31you come across and what you're
- 00:27:33displaying but I have a feeling that we
- 00:27:37are about to learn from Vanessa that we
- 00:27:39have a massive blind spot when it comes
- 00:27:41to warmth and confidence and how you're
- 00:27:44displaying Charisma or not so how can we
- 00:27:48number one
- 00:27:49figure out how charismatic we are what
- 00:27:52do we do all right so first we're the
- 00:27:56first kind of diagnostic that I talked
- 00:27:57about was just which one sounds more
- 00:27:59like you that's where we start right so
- 00:28:01where do you think you fall you hire in
- 00:28:02warmth higher incompetence you have a
- 00:28:04balance or are you under signaling right
- 00:28:05do you shut down and not signal enough
- 00:28:07the next thing you can do is you can
- 00:28:09actually do our diagnostic it's totally
- 00:28:11free and I love this because there's two
- 00:28:13ways that you want I want you to do this
- 00:28:14you can take this as many times as you
- 00:28:16want the whole point the reason I put it
- 00:28:18up from the research is because I want
- 00:28:19people to be able to take a diagnostic

- 00:29:07I want you to send the quiz to a partner
- 00:29:10a friend a colleague and ask them to
- 00:29:13take it as you
- 00:29:16this is the key because it's going to
- 00:29:19show you how other people see you and
- 00:29:22have them screenshot the results
- 00:29:24and then go to dinner and get a lot of
- 00:29:25wine because it'll be a great
- 00:29:27conversation so do you find that most
- 00:29:30people
- 00:29:31have no idea
- 00:29:33how they're showing up
- 00:29:35with other people you were right most of
- 00:29:37us have a blind spot we think we hope we
- 00:29:40think of ourselves as our ideal selves
- 00:29:42and there are days of course we are a
- 00:29:44little closer to that sweet spot of
- 00:29:46warmth and competence but what's really
- 00:29:48key what we find is that not only are
- 00:29:50people giving them different results but
- 00:29:52they even might even have different
- 00:29:53results for home and work
- 00:29:55so they're showing up as two selves and
- 00:29:57that's a very important thing to know
- 00:29:58about yourself if you're going to work
- 00:30:00and you're dreading it you're burnt out
- 00:30:02you're drained it could be that you are
- 00:30:06not honoring who you truly are because
- 00:30:08you're either under signaling competence
- 00:30:10or under signaling warmth or trying to
- 00:30:12fake it till we make it I have a little
- 00:30:14problem with that phrase I don't love
- 00:30:16that phrase because I think that the
- 00:30:18problem is if you're gonna fake warmth
- 00:30:20it's exhausting right and so this is
- 00:30:23also a way to sort of get a very quick
- 00:30:25snapshot in
- 00:30:26how are people perceiving you and is it
- 00:30:28what you think you're showing
- 00:30:31um you also have a suggestion that we
- 00:30:35record our Zoom calls in order to read
- 00:30:39how charismatic we are that sounds
- 00:30:40horrible it's horrible I'm not gonna lie
- 00:30:43it is horrible and not only do I want
- 00:30:45you to record a zoom call I want you to
- 00:30:47record a zoom call that you worked hard
- 00:30:48on
- 00:30:49presentation an important client meeting
- 00:30:51a call and then I want you to code it so
- 00:30:54when we talk what does code it mean okay
- 00:30:56so when we talk about cues so cues are
- 00:30:59the social signals humans send to each
- 00:31:00other okay there are four different
- 00:31:02modes of cues verbal the one we talk
- 00:31:05about the most so our words this is what
- 00:31:07we most of us think about all the time
- 00:31:09we want to prepare the perfect answer
- 00:31:10share the perfect presentation we
- 00:31:12practice our stories so verbal is only
- 00:31:14one mode of cues second is non-verbal
- 00:31:17our body language our gestures our
- 00:31:19facial expressions the third the most
- 00:31:21important one that's overlooked is voice
- 00:31:23tone our vocal power our volume our Pace
- 00:31:26our Cadence our tone and the last
- 00:31:29smallest one is ornaments the jewelry we
- 00:31:31wear what's behind us in our background
- 00:31:33uh the color of our nails how we wear
- 00:31:36our hair our glasses those are the
- 00:31:38ornaments what I want you to do is I
- 00:31:40want you to code yourself for every cue
- 00:31:44that you're showing everything from how
- 00:31:46many gestures you're using to what your
- 00:31:48facial expressions are doing to your
- 00:31:50movement to your fidgeting to your vocal
- 00:31:53power to the kinds of words you're using
- 00:31:55that's also going to give you a snapshot
- 00:31:57because what we've found in our research
- 00:31:59is that there are certain very clear
- 00:32:01signals of warmth cues of warmth and
- 00:32:03cues of competence and the last one are
- 00:32:05danger zone cues cues that are negative
- 00:32:07my goal this is a way that you can see
- 00:32:09is how are you signaling warmth and
- 00:32:11competence what are you doing with your
- 00:32:13body and your VA your voice and your
- 00:32:15face that's making people treat you the
- 00:32:17way that they're treating you
- 00:32:19Okay so
- 00:32:21I I feel like everybody needs to grab a
- 00:32:25pen and a piece of paper and this is
- 00:32:28definitely one of those podcast episodes
- 00:32:31that I know every single parent is going
- 00:32:34to be forwarding to their kids who have
- 00:32:37interviews because we are about to get
- 00:32:39the cheat sheet everybody for how to
- 00:32:42nail Charisma whether you're in a
- 00:32:45virtual meeting whether you're in an
- 00:32:47interview whether you're sending an
- 00:32:48email and so let's go through the cues
- 00:32:51all right what is the easiest way to
- 00:32:54walk through these all right you want to
- 00:32:56go buy warmth do you want to go by like
- 00:32:59do you want to go like how do you want
- 00:33:00to do this because there's a lot to
- 00:33:01cover yes let's do my time
- 00:33:04so what I want to do is actually going
- 00:33:05to do the first 10 seconds of your your
- 00:33:07video the first minute of your video
- 00:33:08that actually helps us break it down
- 00:33:10because actually the first 10 seconds
- 00:33:12are really important the first 10
- 00:33:14seconds of you being on camera really
- 00:33:16yeah because um it sets you up for the
- 00:33:21rest of the time so if you can nail your
- 00:33:23first 10 seconds it makes the next hour
- 00:33:24easier I know so what do we have to do
- 00:33:28what are we doing so so you're about to
- 00:33:30tell us in the first 10 seconds yes of a
- 00:33:34zoom meeting you must do this in order
- 00:33:37to be influential what do you do okay
- 00:33:39first 10 seconds and I want you to code
- 00:33:41this if you did this on your last video
- 00:33:43because here's what you should do in
- 00:33:44your species code number one in the
- 00:33:46first second you should try to show your
- 00:33:49hands
- 00:33:50I know this sounds really weird but they
- 00:33:52use eye tracking studies and they found
- 00:33:54that one of the first places the brain
- 00:33:56looks when they're trying to gauge
- 00:33:58someone's warmth is hands why this is
- 00:34:01actually a survival mechanism back in
- 00:34:03our caveman days if we were approached
- 00:34:05by a stranger caveman we wanted to see
- 00:34:07if they were carrying a rock or a spear
- 00:34:09right so this Still Remains something
- 00:34:11interesting happens I'll do a little
- 00:34:12experiment for you so if you're watching
- 00:34:14the video
- 00:34:15um I'm gonna hide my hands if you're
- 00:34:16listening I'm hiding my hands right now
- 00:34:18yeah the moment you can't see someone's
- 00:34:20hand so if I were to give this entire
- 00:34:21interview with my hands behind my back
- 00:34:23something interesting would happen in
- 00:34:25your brain and Mel's brain which is that
- 00:34:27your amygdala would begin to activate
- 00:34:28and that's because when you can't see
- 00:34:30someone's hands you wonder what what is
- 00:34:33she holding what's her intention and so
- 00:34:36the longer I keep my hands behind my
- 00:34:37back the more distracted you should
- 00:34:38become with the fact that my hands are
- 00:34:40behind the back you want them to come
- 00:34:41back out right yes okay they're back
- 00:34:43right okay they're there hello so much
- 00:34:47better so this is a survival mechanism
- 00:34:49the moment you hop on video walk on
- 00:34:51stage walk into a board room like put
- 00:34:54your hands up like hey everybody hey
- 00:34:56good morning
- 00:34:57nice to see you okay so the first 10
- 00:35:00seconds we turn on the cameras coming on
- 00:35:02we put the hands up hi everybody or just
- 00:35:05one right like a little way nice to see
- 00:35:07you you walk into a crowded restaurant
- 00:35:08to see your date hey good to see you
- 00:35:10that hand gesture immediately
- 00:35:13deactivates Their Fear processing easy
- 00:35:16okay so I want them visible second
- 00:35:18little bonus tip here is the space the
- 00:35:21distance I literally want you to measure
- 00:35:22this the distance between your nose and
- 00:35:25the camera
- 00:35:27the reason for this is because in person
- 00:35:29we are very aware of what's called
- 00:35:31proxemics zones proxemic zones are the
- 00:35:34space between people so we know and this
- 00:35:36is a little bit different culture to
- 00:35:37culture so hand gestures universally we
- 00:35:39like to see hands but culture to culture
- 00:35:42we also like to know how what's the
- 00:35:44distance between people so I highly
- 00:35:46recommend make sure your camera is at
- 00:35:48least a foot and a half away from your
- 00:35:50face Okay the reason for this is because
- 00:35:53imagine if I were to give no I'm gonna
- 00:35:54get really close to the camera imagine
- 00:35:55if I were to give my entire interview
- 00:35:57really close you'd be like Vanessa back
- 00:36:00up back up oh my God I totally like lean
- 00:36:05into the camera I I I I have no space
- 00:36:08above my head I like my whole face right
- 00:36:11in there so maybe I gotta back off a
- 00:36:13little bit on the camera let's talk
- 00:36:15about this for a second okay there are
- 00:36:17no bad cues in the sense of they're all
- 00:36:20purposeful when you were really glad I
- 00:36:22love your videos I've seen your close-up
- 00:36:24videos you should know on purpose if you
- 00:36:27are very close to the camera right up in
- 00:36:28your face you are signaling intimacy
- 00:36:31you are signaling I'm right up in it and
- 00:36:34that's because as humans there are four
- 00:36:37different proxemic zones the public Zone
- 00:36:39the social Zone the personal zone of the
- 00:36:40intimate Zone we reserve the intimate
- 00:36:42Zone which is zero to 18 inches away
- 00:36:44zero to a foot and a half away for
- 00:36:46people we feel really close to it so our
- 00:36:49partners our parents so does our best
- 00:36:52friends and so actually when I watch
- 00:36:54your videos where you're really close I
- 00:36:55feel like we're besties well tell me
- 00:36:59tell me everything
- 00:37:01so I would say reserve those videos for
- 00:37:04your intimate moments okay you're
- 00:37:06literally singling that so in a normal
- 00:37:08Zoom call I want you at least a foot and
- 00:37:09a half away it also helps you show your
- 00:37:11hands right it helps gestures so smart
- 00:37:14Okay so the first 10 the first 10
- 00:37:16seconds everybody we got the hands up
- 00:37:18and we got to be about a foot and a half
- 00:37:20away because this is oh and there's more
- 00:37:23oh there's more okay okay second vocal
- 00:37:26so that was a non-verbal cue I want you
- 00:37:29to make sure you are not accidentally
- 00:37:31using the question inflection on your
- 00:37:34name or an important information the
- 00:37:37question inflections when we go up at
- 00:37:38the end of our sentence so it sounds
- 00:37:40like we're asking a question and so
- 00:37:42often we found in our lab that people
- 00:37:44would use the question reflection in the
- 00:37:46first 10 seconds which made people doubt
- 00:37:48them so I'm gonna I want to share this
- 00:37:50study because this study gave me the
- 00:37:52chills when I first heard it and I think
- 00:37:54it's so incredibly important for people
- 00:37:56who are listening who want to be taken
- 00:37:58seriously so what they did in the study
- 00:37:59I promise I won't get two into the
- 00:38:01science chance very simply they brought
- 00:38:03doctors into their lab and they wanted
- 00:38:06to know if people would change their
- 00:38:08perceptions of Charisma based on their
- 00:38:09voice tone so they asked the doctors to
- 00:38:12record 10 second voice tone clips so
- 00:38:15these clips had to say their name where
- 00:38:17they worked and their Specialties it
- 00:38:18sounded like this I used my lipstick as
- 00:38:20an example
- 00:38:21hi my name is Dr Edwards I specialize in
- 00:38:24oncology and I work at Children's
- 00:38:25Presbyterian Hospital
- 00:38:27they took these clips and they warbled
- 00:38:30the words so you could hear the volume
- 00:38:31that pace the Cadence but not the actual
- 00:38:34words being said so that sounded like
- 00:38:35this
- 00:38:39okay they asked participants to then
- 00:38:43rate these doctors on warmth and
- 00:38:46competence based on the warbled thing
- 00:38:48that you just did yes so imagine that I
- 00:38:50just did that then I asked you do you
- 00:38:53like this person is this person smart
- 00:38:56so participants rated these gobbledygook
- 00:38:58Clips on do they like this person this
- 00:39:00person's smart they found the doctors
- 00:39:02who had the lowest warmth and competence
- 00:39:06ratings had the highest rate of
- 00:39:08malpractice lawsuits
- 00:39:10what
- 00:39:13the doctors with the lowest warmth and
- 00:39:15confidence ratings simply based on their
- 00:39:18voice tone had the highest rate of
- 00:39:20malpractice lawsuits this implies that
- 00:39:23we don't just dislike People based on
- 00:39:26their skills we dislike People based on
- 00:39:29our perception of their skills and that
- 00:39:31happens in the first few seconds of
- 00:39:33hearing them
- 00:39:35the biggest pattern it's it was such a
- 00:39:38it's such a shock wave to the community
- 00:39:39because these are these are doctors who
- 00:39:41are very well trained what they found
- 00:39:43was patterns there were certain doctors
- 00:39:46who across the board were rated as
- 00:39:48highly charismatic from gobbledygook and
- 00:39:51there were certain doctors over and over
- 00:39:53again they were rated as not very smart
- 00:39:55not very likable here was the biggest
- 00:39:57pattern up talk
- 00:39:59the doctors who had an introduction like
- 00:40:01this
- 00:40:03hi my name is Dr Edwards I specialize in
- 00:40:05oncology and I work in Children's
- 00:40:07Hospital
- 00:40:11right what it did is it changes the way
- 00:40:15that we listen they found that when we
- 00:40:18hear the question inflection
- 00:40:20accidentally used on a statement our
- 00:40:23prefrontal cortex shifts from listening
- 00:40:26to scrutinizing we think why did they
- 00:40:30just question themselves I guess I
- 00:40:32should question them
- 00:40:33we hear this all the time in sales calls
- 00:40:35where someone is killing it in a pitch
- 00:40:38this is what this is the income the last
- 00:40:40I or in a salary negotiation
- 00:40:43I'd love to work for your company I I
- 00:40:45think I'd be a great fit for you I love
- 00:40:47your mission and I'm really looking for
- 00:40:50a salary range of over a hundred
- 00:40:51thousand dollars
- 00:40:56everybody do you hear that question
- 00:40:58I'm really looking for a salary range of
- 00:41:00um a hundred thousand dollars
- 00:41:02when you ask your price you are begging
- 00:41:06people to negotiate with you you're
- 00:41:08telling people I don't really believe
- 00:41:09this number and you shouldn't believe it
- 00:41:11either
- 00:41:12so what happens in the first 10 seconds
- 00:41:13is we're nervous right we're really
- 00:41:16nervous we've been holding our breath
- 00:41:18we're waiting for Zoom call and so we
- 00:41:20accidentally give away all of our vocal
- 00:41:21power in the first 10 seconds we say hey
- 00:41:24everyone my name is Vanessa we'll get
- 00:41:26started in a few
- 00:41:29whoa okay I just
- 00:41:32this is why it's important to tape a
- 00:41:35zoom call you're on everybody yeah
- 00:41:37because now you have three
- 00:41:39research back
- 00:41:43incredibly subtle but profound Behavior
- 00:41:47changes
- 00:41:48that you need to make immediately
- 00:41:51immediately hands up
- 00:41:54you got to have the right distance which
- 00:41:56is a foot to a foot and a half nose to
- 00:41:58camera
- 00:41:59no up talk everybody and I I would
- 00:42:02imagine that most people don't realize
- 00:42:08that they do it
- 00:42:10no idea that's why coding is so
- 00:42:13important that's why seeing yourself
- 00:42:15that's why we don't realize we walk into
- 00:42:17a salary negotiation or walk into a
- 00:42:19pitch meeting with a client or we go on
- 00:42:21a date and we think it went well
- 00:42:23right how often have people been
- 00:42:24sideswiped and they think yeah I think
- 00:42:26that went great but I didn't get a call
- 00:42:27back or I didn't get a second date it's
- 00:42:29because you are accidentally telling the
- 00:42:31world how to treat you and if you under
- 00:42:33signal warmth people don't like you if
- 00:42:36you under signal competence people don't
- 00:42:38take you seriously and the up talking
- 00:42:40everyone
- 00:42:41is when you're under signaling
- 00:42:44confidence you might be the most
- 00:42:47confident and and qualified person but
- 00:42:51if you walk into that interview and you
- 00:42:53don't you know not sure like it my last
- 00:42:56job was great
- 00:42:57I think I'd do great here I you know
- 00:43:00hundred thousand that would be
- 00:43:03that'd be great like a a
- 00:43:05you just shot yourself in the foot yeah
- 00:43:08and you don't even realize it because
- 00:43:09you don't hear it I bet people do this
- 00:43:11as dating all the time all the time and
- 00:43:13the problem is it's a permit it's a
- 00:43:15permission seeking Behavior so if we
- 00:43:17really get down to the root cause of it
- 00:43:19which is one thing that fascinates me is
- 00:43:21this is appeasement body language right
- 00:43:23so this is do you like me do you agree
- 00:43:26with me so oftentimes highly warm people
- 00:43:29who really really desperately want to be
- 00:43:31liked use more up talk because they're
- 00:43:34asking do you agree do you like me the
- 00:43:38crazy thing is is it annoying opposite
- 00:43:40effect right so that I also want you to
- 00:43:44get really to the root cause of if you
- 00:43:46hear yourself do up talk and by the way
- 00:43:47please go listen to your voicemail
- 00:43:49so go listen to your voicemail or any
- 00:43:51voice recordings if you've sent any
- 00:43:53voice recordings or voice memos in the
- 00:43:55past few days go re-listen to them and
- 00:43:57see if you accidentally use up talk and
- 00:43:58go re-record
- 00:44:00so how do you coach somebody who has a
- 00:44:04style of speaking
- 00:44:05where they naturally end sentences
- 00:44:09with this up talk so it's almost like
- 00:44:12you've got a statement and and as you
- 00:44:15speak it it sounds like a question at
- 00:44:17the end yes and do women do this more
- 00:44:19than men yes so women do this more than
- 00:44:22men also the research finds that women
- 00:44:25typically but not always are seen as
- 00:44:27higher in warmth and that's because from
- 00:44:29a very young age women are often taught
- 00:44:31to be liked and so they tend to dial up
- 00:44:33their warmth earlier typically but not
- 00:44:35always men are seen as higher
- 00:44:37incompetence and that's because often
- 00:44:38men are told to be right
- 00:44:40um
- 00:44:41so we also have to be aware of those
- 00:44:42gender differences so yes women
- 00:44:44typically more often use
- 00:44:46up talk or high warmth so luckily this
- 00:44:50is actually a very easy thing to fix so
- 00:44:51we're going to do it we're gonna do it
- 00:44:53with breath and pausing so one of the
- 00:44:55things that can happen with uptalk is
- 00:44:57we're nervous and we're speaking very
- 00:44:59quickly and so what I want you to think
- 00:45:01about is what do you want to say with
- 00:45:03purpose and how can you deliver it with
- 00:45:05purpose so there's three kinds of
- 00:45:07inflection there's up talk so going up
- 00:45:09at the end of our sentence
- 00:45:10there's neutral going up going stay
- 00:45:13neutral at the end of our sentence and
- 00:45:14there's the downward inflection which is
- 00:45:16very commanding which is going down at
- 00:45:17the end of our sentence
- 00:45:19okay so all three of those things signal
- 00:45:21something very very different what I
- 00:45:23want you to pay attention to is the
- 00:45:25tension in your vocal cords
- 00:45:27so when we are tense when we're nervous
- 00:45:29we tend to take in a breath and talk at
- 00:45:31the top of our breath it's really really
- 00:45:34hard to sound confident when we're up
- 00:45:35here
- 00:45:36so what I want you to do is when you say
- 00:45:38hello or your first few words I want you
- 00:45:41to speak on the out breath okay what
- 00:45:44most people do is they hold their breath
- 00:45:46before they get out of a zoom call or a
- 00:45:48phone call so they go hello
- 00:45:50all the way up here oh my gosh you're
- 00:45:54right because you're like hi hi hi oh so
- 00:45:58good to see you
- 00:46:00so we did this experiment where we had
- 00:46:03people submit recordings of important
- 00:46:04phone calls and we found the highest
- 00:46:07part of the entire call up talk and
- 00:46:09vocal tone was the first 10 seconds
- 00:46:11literally people would go hey it's so
- 00:46:13good to see you so how's it going that's
- 00:46:16a thousand percent right
- 00:46:19so this is really easy to fix what do
- 00:46:21you do instead of holding your breath I
- 00:46:24want you to speak on the out breath so
- 00:46:25it's a little experiment
- 00:46:27I want you to hear the highest end of
- 00:46:28your range so the highest end of your
- 00:46:30range is when you speak at the top of
- 00:46:32your breasts on the count of three I
- 00:46:33want us to say and wherever you are you
- 00:46:35can do this in your car tell your kids
- 00:46:36to do it with you so I want you to take
- 00:46:38in a deep breath and say hello at the
- 00:46:39top of your breath so it's going to
- 00:46:40sound like this one two three hello
- 00:46:43so you want to try it with me Mel yeah I
- 00:46:45do one two three hello
- 00:46:49hello yeah hi it's very high that's the
- 00:46:53highest end of your breath if you hear
- 00:46:55your rain going up there you are
- 00:46:57speaking too high you hear yourself go
- 00:46:58there what I want you to do is try to
- 00:47:00relax your vocal cords by speaking on
- 00:47:02the out breath so this time there you go
- 00:47:05that was it
- 00:47:07so you just heard the difference so
- 00:47:08here's my difference ready
- 00:47:10hello
- 00:47:12hello
- 00:47:14those are both me but they sound totally
- 00:47:16different so this time what we're going
- 00:47:17to do is we're going to take a deep
- 00:47:18breath in on the count of three and I
- 00:47:19want you to say hello on the out breath
- 00:47:22okay one two three hello
- 00:47:28that sounded good yes okay so signaling
- 00:47:32competence
- 00:47:34uh we now have a bunch of things that
- 00:47:37you can do including and probably one of
- 00:47:40the most important is learning
- 00:47:42how to take a breath and then talk on
- 00:47:45the out breath out can I add one more
- 00:47:47competence cue that I think is really
- 00:47:48easy yeah okay so hand gestures there's
- 00:47:52two sides of hand gestures one is
- 00:47:53visible right so we mentioned having a
- 00:47:55little you know wave hello greeting at
- 00:47:57the top of a video call or in person the
- 00:48:00next thing we look for in hand gestures
- 00:48:01is purpose
- 00:48:03what highly competent people did so we
- 00:48:05did a research study where we analyzed
- 00:48:06thousands of hours of TED Talks I was
- 00:48:09curious why do some TED Talks go viral
- 00:48:11and some don't so in our lab we analyzed
- 00:48:14thousands of hours counting cues coding
- 00:48:17he literally coded TED talks and looked
- 00:48:19at the view count we found that the most
- 00:48:21viral TED Talks use an average of 465
- 00:48:25gestures in 18 minutes
- 00:48:27whereas the least popular TED Talks use
- 00:48:30an average of 272 gestures it's almost
- 00:48:32half what happens here is the best Ted
- 00:48:35talkers
- 00:48:36they get on stage and they typically go
- 00:48:38good morning so they have a visible hand
- 00:48:40out of their pockets right in front and
- 00:48:42then what they do I'm going to demo this
- 00:48:44for you and by the way if you're just
- 00:48:46listening I'm gonna show some hand
- 00:48:47gestures along with my words and I'll
- 00:48:49see if this looks familiar to you this
- 00:48:51is every popular TED Talk
- 00:48:54today
- 00:48:55I want to talk to you about a big idea
- 00:48:59it's going to change your life in three
- 00:49:01different ways
- 00:49:03that is cueing the brain to say wow this
- 00:49:08person knows their content so well they
- 00:49:10can speak to me on two tracks
- 00:49:12they can speak to me with their verbal
- 00:49:14but they can also demo their Concepts
- 00:49:16along with their words so if I were to
- 00:49:18say today I have a really big idea and
- 00:49:20hold up my hands like I'm holding a
- 00:49:22penny
- 00:49:23you're like Vanessa looks so small your
- 00:49:26brain is more likely to believe my
- 00:49:28gesture than my word wow wow okay so let
- 00:49:33me just say

- 00:49:44was very interesting because when you
- 00:49:46said big idea what she did everybody is
- 00:49:49she held up her fingers like making that
- 00:49:53gesture when like imagine if I were like
- 00:49:55it's really puny and now I'm making that
- 00:49:58tiny little like my fingers are like a
- 00:50:00quarter inch apart when she said it's a
- 00:50:03big idea and she showed me the hand
- 00:50:04signal for puny
- 00:50:06Vanessa's dead right
- 00:50:08my brain went right to the hand gesture
- 00:50:11and I was like wait a minute that
- 00:50:12doesn't match why the heck is she
- 00:50:15saying puny like why is she not saying
- 00:50:17puny because clearly it's a puny idea if
- 00:50:19she's making it that's really
- 00:50:21interesting so that this is where I
- 00:50:23think inauthenticity comes from so
- 00:50:25people who are inauthentic are saying
- 00:50:27one thing with their words but they're
- 00:50:29non-verbal their vocal doesn't match and
- 00:50:31our brain does not like this our brain
- 00:50:34is like wait a minute that was
- 00:50:35incongruent right like that didn't work
- 00:50:37so and by the way this is very hard to
- 00:50:39do so everyone has this thing I want to
- 00:50:40do a little experiment with you what I
- 00:50:42want you to do in a second is I want you
- 00:50:43to say five but I want you to hold up
- 00:50:46the number three okay ready yeah
- 00:50:49five five oh that's weird my brain
- 00:50:53literally went that's the wrong hand
- 00:50:56gesture Mel your brain was like stop
- 00:50:59stop that is because our brains also
- 00:51:03like to be congruent so our brains use
- 00:51:06our gestures as truth-telling and so
- 00:51:09what happens is it's this really
- 00:51:10interesting cycle of if you want to be
- 00:51:12shown up show up as competent the other
- 00:51:14thing you can think about in the first
- 00:51:1510 seconds and then throughout is how
- 00:51:17can you demo a concept with your hands
- 00:51:19now this is not interpretive dance I
- 00:51:21don't need to like good morning I'm so
- 00:51:23happy to be here you know I love you
- 00:51:26you're hilarious okay we don't have to
- 00:51:28do that but there is a difference of you
- 00:51:31know
- 00:51:31I'm so happy to be here I want to talk
- 00:51:33about two different things in the
- 00:51:34meeting today
- 00:51:35when someone holds up two and they say
- 00:51:37two not only does it make you look
- 00:51:39competent they think wow it really is
- 00:51:41too you're also hooking the other
- 00:51:43person's brain to think I better
- 00:51:45remember both
- 00:51:46you become more memorable with more
- 00:51:49purposeful gestures people believe your
- 00:51:51competence when your gestures and your
- 00:51:54words are congruent a very easy one what
- 00:51:57are mistakes
- 00:51:59that let's start with introverts what
- 00:52:02are mistakes that introverts make when
- 00:52:05it comes to body language
- 00:52:07okay so uh one of the biggest mistakes
- 00:52:09that we have identified there's there's
- 00:52:12a lot of them is with our facial
- 00:52:14expressions
- 00:52:15so I think with our facial expressions
- 00:52:16we forget how rich our face is in
- 00:52:20demonstrating emotions or cueing
- 00:52:22emotions
- 00:52:23so a big mistake that I see is people
- 00:52:25will fake smile
- 00:52:27I love smiling but there is nothing
- 00:52:29worse than fake smiling I do not believe
- 00:52:31in toxic positivity so people have been
- 00:52:33told smile smile more which I think is
- 00:52:37like the worst advice right I'm like
- 00:52:39smile purposefully don't smile more so a
- 00:52:42really simple mistake is someone will
- 00:52:43say yeah I'm so happy to be here
- 00:52:48incongruent and congruent so what will
- 00:52:51happen is introvert really wants to show
- 00:52:53up as their best out there come with the
- 00:52:54best intention or someone will hop on a
- 00:52:57video call and they're trying to be
- 00:52:58positive and so they'll have a lot of
- 00:53:00incongruent messages by trying to show
- 00:53:02warmth with a fake smile the problem is
- 00:53:04Dr Barbara Wilde and her Associates
- 00:53:06they actually looked at fake smiling and
- 00:53:09what they did is they showed people
- 00:53:10pictures of smiling people fake smiling
- 00:53:13people and neutral people by the way
- 00:53:15just the science of this a fake smile or
- 00:53:17a real smile reaches all the way up into
- 00:53:19these upper cheek muscles so if you were
- 00:53:21to smile all the way up into your upper
- 00:53:22cheek muscles they activate your crow's
- 00:53:25feet right that's a real smile only one
- 00:53:27in ten people can consciously activate
- 00:53:28those muscles so they really do happen
- 00:53:31with authentic happiness okay fake
- 00:53:34Smiles are only on the bottom half of
- 00:53:35the face so if I was in a face mask you
- 00:53:37could not see my fake smile right but
- 00:53:39you could see the smile lines in
- 00:53:41somebody's eyes if it's real so a real
- 00:53:44smile you actually make with your eyes
- 00:53:46exactly exactly okay upper cheek muscles
- 00:53:49slash eyes exactly so what happens is
- 00:53:52what happened this research experiment
- 00:53:54is she showed people pictures of real
- 00:53:56smiling people and people caught the
- 00:53:59happiness it actually affected their
- 00:54:01positive mood they felt happier
- 00:54:03when people saw the fake Smiles they
- 00:54:07caught nothing
- 00:54:08in other words
- 00:54:10cueing for real happiness actually makes
- 00:54:12you more contagious fake happiness makes
- 00:54:14you less and memorable nothing happens
- 00:54:16so the biggest mistake that will happen
- 00:54:18with introverts is they want to come
- 00:54:19across as warm and their only tool in
- 00:54:21their tool kit is smiling
- 00:54:23problem is there are the good thing is
- 00:54:25there are many other warmth cues so what
- 00:54:27are the other warmth cues that you can
- 00:54:28okay so I would if you're gonna smile
- 00:54:30smile for real and okay please please go
- 00:54:33look at your LinkedIn profile picture
- 00:54:34please please go look at your dating
- 00:54:36profile pictures I either want you
- 00:54:39neutral
- 00:54:40sexy or smiling all the way no fake
- 00:54:42Smiles okay so make sure that smile is
- 00:54:46all the way up into your eyes because if
- 00:54:47you have a fake smile in your LinkedIn
- 00:54:49profile picture you are literally
- 00:54:50signaling fake happiness inauthenticity
- 00:54:54so if you don't want to actually smile
- 00:54:56that is totally okay that's not your
- 00:54:57only warmth cue here are your other
- 00:54:58warmth options One a head nod so a slow
- 00:55:03triple nod one two three is an immediate
- 00:55:07warm signal wow one two three okay we
- 00:55:10can do that people yes so and by the way
- 00:55:12the funny thing about this the research
- 00:55:14found this just tickles me that when
- 00:55:17someone does a slow triple knot
- 00:55:20the other person speaks 67 percent
- 00:55:23longer
- 00:55:25wow it's like a non-verbal dot dot dot
- 00:55:27you're literally saying to someone tell
- 00:55:29me more I want to listen I want to hear
- 00:55:32you so a slow triple nod I think they
- 00:55:34teach that to therapists don't they I
- 00:55:37think they they teach the therapist
- 00:55:38triple nod yeah right so a slow triple
- 00:55:42knot very easy you don't have to smile
- 00:55:43it's just it's a it's a warmth cue the
- 00:55:45other thing that we found we did this in
- 00:55:46LinkedIn profile pictures
- 00:55:48if you add a simple head tilt do your
- 00:55:52scene is warmer
- 00:55:54so if I tilt my head to the side this is
- 00:55:57a universal response if I want to hear
- 00:55:58something better so if I say Mel do you
- 00:56:01hear that we automatically tilt our head
- 00:56:03and expose our ear that's a way that we
- 00:56:05want to hear better and so when you are
- 00:56:07on a video call on a date in your
- 00:56:09LinkedIn profile picture if you want to
- 00:56:10be seen as warm you can tilt your head
- 00:56:12to the side as if to say I am deeply
- 00:56:14listening I am really trying to hear you
- 00:56:17and it's much more natural than smiling
- 00:56:19maniacally this is fascinating so we've
- 00:56:22got the triple knot everybody we've got
- 00:56:24smile with your eyes we've got tilt your
- 00:56:26head slightly what are other warm cues
- 00:56:29okay so other warm key is vocal so let's
- 00:56:31talk about vocals those were three
- 00:56:32nonverbal cues vocal remember is the one
- 00:56:34that we often forget you have a lot of
- 00:56:36power in your voice so another warmth
- 00:56:38vocal cue is what I call vocalizations
- 00:56:41oh do we love a vocalization so
- 00:56:43vocalization is surround sound listening
- 00:56:46it's it's showing that you're listening
- 00:56:47so this is going to immediately make me
- 00:56:49sound warmer um
- 00:56:51oh I just did that oh I'm very warm yes
- 00:56:55so actually you have a very good balance
- 00:56:57smell of warmth and competence I was
- 00:56:58going to say you when you asked for an
- 00:57:00example but I was like that's way too
- 00:57:01Brown nosy so I didn't but you have you
- 00:57:04have a very good warmth of competence
- 00:57:06because you will vocalize for me so as a
- 00:57:09speaker when you nod at me I can see you
- 00:57:11nodding right now oh yeah I'm just doing
- 00:57:13it naturally yeah and that encourages me
- 00:57:16as a speaker I'm doing good
- 00:57:18that makes my crunchiness smoother
- 00:57:22oh
- 00:57:23that's so awesome so your warmth cues
- 00:57:27are gifts to awkward people when you
- 00:57:31show someone who's crunchy awkward
- 00:57:33afraid I'm listening to you
- 00:57:36um that was interesting oh aha you are
- 00:57:40gifting them lubricant you are saying
- 00:57:42you got this girl like I'm listening I'm
- 00:57:45hearing you this is super smooth which
- 00:57:48then makes me more smooth and so I
- 00:57:51there's two sides of why I wrote this
- 00:57:53book yes I want you to be more
- 00:57:55charismatic but I also want you to be
- 00:57:57more inspiring I want you to
- 00:58:00be contagious in a way that's gifting
- 00:58:02warmth and competence and so adding
- 00:58:06vocalization is a very easy way
- 00:58:07especially for my introverts remember my
- 00:58:10introverts I want you I want to teach
- 00:58:12you how to be heard about being loud
- 00:58:14so nonverbal cues vocalizations that's a
- 00:58:16way for you to participate in
- 00:58:17conversation without saying a word
- 00:58:19right so um
- 00:58:21oh that's fantastic easy all right do
- 00:58:24that again so what are the what are the
- 00:58:26other ones other than um
- 00:58:27oh ah wow what
- 00:58:32those are all warm globalization in fact
- 00:58:35doing them to right now to kind of give
- 00:58:37you the warm and fuzzies like a little
- 00:58:39bit should be like um that feels so good
- 00:58:41so whatever I I say vocalizations are
- 00:58:44kind of like a warming blanket it like
- 00:58:46makes the other person feel like wow I'm
- 00:58:48doing so good
- 00:58:50so you're doing better than good you're
- 00:58:52doing fantastic Vanessa how do you
- 00:58:56display competence what are some cues
- 00:58:58for competence all right so competence
- 00:59:02um low tone which we talked about
- 00:59:03already so not using The Accidental
- 00:59:04question reflection is really important
- 00:59:06explanatory gestures so being purposeful
- 00:59:08with our gestures eye contact eye
- 00:59:11contact is a hard one because I know
- 00:59:13that eye contact can be different for
- 00:59:14culture different cultures but what I
- 00:59:16want us to understand about eye contact
- 00:59:18is that eye contact produces a chemical
- 00:59:20so when we mutually gaze and they even
- 00:59:23found this happens through a screen so
- 00:59:26if I make eye contact with the camera we
- 00:59:28also produce this chemical oxytocin
- 00:59:30oxytocin is a very complicated chemical
- 00:59:33there's a lot of things in our body but
- 00:59:34for social purposes oxytocin is the
- 00:59:37chemical of connection
- 00:59:39when we are making eye contact when we
- 00:59:41first meet someone or we hop on video
- 00:59:42our bodies go
- 00:59:45oh we're both mutually gazing we must be
- 00:59:48friend not foe therefore let me produce
- 00:59:50the chemical that allows me to trust the
- 00:59:53more oxytocin that's in our bodies when
- 00:59:55we're communicating the more open we are
- 00:59:56the more we say yes the more we feel
- 00:59:59like ah I'm on the same page of this
- 01:00:01person so eye contact is one of the
- 01:00:05fastest ways to get or gift oxytocin now
- 01:00:09the amount of oxytocin is different I do
- 01:00:12not believe and I really want to repeat
- 01:00:13this I do not believe in 100 eye contact
- 01:00:16oh thank God okay because no for
- 01:00:20somebody with I have ADHD and I've
- 01:00:22noticed every time I talk every time I
- 01:00:25read anything about body language you're
- 01:00:27lying if you look away and I'm like I
- 01:00:29have a hard time holding eye contact for
- 01:00:33a long period of time and I know it has
- 01:00:35to do with the ADHD that that is correct
- 01:00:38that is correct so let's talk about this
- 01:00:39first of all I want to talk about
- 01:00:40looking up to the left is lying because
- 01:00:42that's a very a myth I want to bust
- 01:00:43second the worst advice that bad body
- 01:00:47language books give is make more eye
- 01:00:49contact no eye contact is great and it
- 01:00:52can produce oxytocin but actually we
- 01:00:55should not be making 100 eye contact or
- 01:00:57even 80 or 90 eye contact that is a
- 01:00:59territorial gesture
- 01:01:01our bodies know that when we're trying
- 01:01:03to process something mentally we look
- 01:01:04away so for example if I were to ask you
- 01:01:07to do some some math with me now if I
- 01:01:08were to say Mel what's 10 times 10
- 01:01:11uh five minus wait I'm not gonna make
- 01:01:14you do it but you immediately break eye
- 01:01:17contact 105. okay I looked up to do the
- 01:01:20math yeah you looked up all right and
- 01:01:22now I never noticed that but you're
- 01:01:24right I like I looked up to go like I
- 01:01:26looked up at an imaginary chalkboard and
- 01:01:29imagine 10 times 10 plus 5 105. and this
- 01:01:33is a really important thing for humans
- 01:01:35to do why if I ask you a complicated
- 01:01:37question a technical question even a
- 01:01:39memory based question oh tell me about
- 01:01:41your last job tell me about your last
- 01:01:42girlfriend you need to look up to access
- 01:01:45the memory or to access the knowledge
- 01:01:48you do like is that like a neurological
- 01:01:50thing yes yes because when think about
- 01:01:53this from a from a chemical perspective
- 01:01:55when we are talking we are bonding I
- 01:01:57want to make eye contact but if you ask
- 01:01:59me a hard question about my past or a
- 01:02:02math problem I need to break the eye
- 01:02:04contact stop producing the oxytocin so I
- 01:02:07can access that memory
- 01:02:08so it's our brain's way of saying don't
- 01:02:11give me too much input I need to access
- 01:02:13this input in this information over here
- 01:02:16so that's why it can be so confusing for
- 01:02:19people who are trying to make more eye
- 01:02:20contact no right I want you to make eye
- 01:02:22contact when you want to bond with
- 01:02:24someone absolutely especially in the
- 01:02:25first few seconds but when you're
- 01:02:27processing or accessing information I
- 01:02:30actually want you to look away because
- 01:02:31you're going to give a better answer and
- 01:02:33humans understand this right so if I
- 01:02:35were to if you were to ask me a very
- 01:02:37hard question that I didn't know the
- 01:02:38answer to and I went oh that's a great
- 01:02:40question
- 01:02:41you are more likely to believe my answer
- 01:02:43because I looked away to process it
- 01:02:47that's fascinating
- 01:02:49so
- 01:02:50um that's the first thing on a bus about
- 01:02:51eye contact is do not feel pressured to
- 01:02:53make more eye contact competent people
- 01:02:55make purposeful eye contact
- 01:02:58competent people they know that when
- 01:03:01they're trying to bond to connect
- 01:03:02they're right at you but when they're
- 01:03:04trying to access a competent answer
- 01:03:06they're accessing it over here or over
- 01:03:08here or over here so that's actually a
- 01:03:12mark of competence it's also a way to
- 01:03:13pause to introduce I am deeply thinking
- 01:03:16about what you just said so I can give
- 01:03:18you a really good answer
- 01:03:20second thing is we have done a ton of
- 01:03:22lie detection research in our lab in
- 01:03:23fact I almost almost we have one chapter
- 01:03:26on lie detection in the book I almost
- 01:03:28put it into its own book because it's so
- 01:03:30much research I want to bust a myth
- 01:03:32looking up to the left or looking up to
- 01:03:34the right does not mean someone is lying
- 01:03:37that means someone is accessing
- 01:03:39different information what I do think
- 01:03:41that people should do is know their
- 01:03:43lying tells I think a fundamental piece
- 01:03:46of information every single person
- 01:03:48should know about themselves is what
- 01:03:50they do when they lie so here's what I
- 01:03:52wait hold on let me just make sure I I'm
- 01:03:54so you're not saying here's a tell when
- 01:03:57someone else is lying you're saying what
- 01:04:00does it tell when you're lying that's it
- 01:04:02oh why do I need to know that
- 01:04:04you need to know that because you need
- 01:04:06to know when you are accidentally
- 01:04:08signaling in authenticity
- 01:04:09because what can often happen is you
- 01:04:11should know your online tell because
- 01:04:12hopefully you're not lying a lot but
- 01:04:14oftentimes people will do their lying
- 01:04:15tell when they're not even lying when
- 01:04:17they're nervous or afraid
- 01:04:20and it's signaling to the world I'm
- 01:04:22nervous and Afraid what's your lying
- 01:04:24tell so my lying tell is I hide my hands
- 01:04:27so I get my hands get really cold and I
- 01:04:30usually hide them or I clench them so if
- 01:04:32you see me ever have like a clenched
- 01:04:33fist I'm like keep it together keep it
- 01:04:35together keep it together keep it
- 01:04:36together so a clenched fist or a white
- 01:04:38knuckling it or I hide my hands I also
- 01:04:42um use a little bit of a disgust micro
- 01:04:43expression so we talked about fear as a
- 01:04:46micro expression discussed is when we
- 01:04:47crinkle our nose up and we Flash the
- 01:04:50whites of our teeth
- 01:04:51uh this is a like if I were to say oh I
- 01:04:54smell something bad disgust is a really
- 01:04:56common lying red flag because Liars
- 01:04:59including myself we hate lying it makes
- 01:05:02us feel dirty literally lying makes us
- 01:05:04feel dirty Liars will often use more
- 01:05:05Purell
- 01:05:07afterwards because they it makes them
- 01:05:08feel physically dirty so you'll see
- 01:05:10people if you ask someone so uh what do
- 01:05:12you think of the new girl
- 01:05:14oh yeah you know she's she's nice yeah
- 01:05:17you've got a disgust face as you say
- 01:05:20that and now as I'm watching you I'm
- 01:05:22like you're lying because you're saying
- 01:05:25she's nice but your face says disgust
- 01:05:27yeah so how do you though know your own
- 01:05:30tell because I'm sitting here trying to
- 01:05:32think no well I'm gonna give you I'm
- 01:05:35gonna give you that I know what it is
- 01:05:36this is a fun Friday night if you're
- 01:05:38willing to to kind of do this with a
- 01:05:39couple friends it's really fun to do
- 01:05:40this I highly recommend doing this to
- 01:05:42your partner my partner and I know are
- 01:05:44each other's tells which has made our
- 01:05:46marriage super honest which I love like
- 01:05:48radical honesty I'm all about it so
- 01:05:50here's what I want you to do okay get
- 01:05:52ready Chris I got date night one if you
- 01:05:55can film this also it's helpful to
- 01:05:57re-watch it together first I want you to
- 01:05:59open up your camera or your phone one I
- 01:06:03want you to tell me what you had for
- 01:06:04breakfast yesterday
- 01:06:06Okay the reason I can't remember is a
- 01:06:09recall test you need to know what you
- 01:06:12look like when you're recalling truth
- 01:06:14you will notice you'll probably look up
- 01:06:16to left look up to the right yeah I look
- 01:06:18to your left or touch your face I kind
- 01:06:21of I look to the left and then I looped
- 01:06:22my head around okay so that's and you
- 01:06:25also were tapping your foot you're sure
- 01:06:26was I oh I was okay yes okay cool okay
- 01:06:29so that's your recall test that's what
- 01:06:32you look like when you are accessing
- 01:06:33truthful information you're right you
- 01:06:36know why I click my foot it's like I'm
- 01:06:37cranking the brain back up come on I
- 01:06:40still can't remember what the hell I had
- 01:06:41for breakfast yesterday even though I'm
- 01:06:43cranking the foot and I'm looking to the
- 01:06:44left but okay like what was it what was
- 01:06:46it what was it what is today yesterday
- 01:06:48was Sunday I can't remember what I had
- 01:06:50for breakfast
- 01:06:52if I if I made you sit and think about
- 01:06:54it by the way it's okay if it takes you
- 01:06:55a couple seconds to think about it we'll
- 01:06:57see exactly what you look like or what
- 01:06:58Mel looks like when she's recalling
- 01:06:59truth oh I'm like scrunching my face up
- 01:07:03right now yeah I'm not sure I had
- 01:07:05breakfast yesterday and that could be
- 01:07:06the answer yeah I don't think I ate
- 01:07:08breakfast yesterday so we just saw what
- 01:07:12Mel looks like when she is recalling
- 01:07:14truth okay okay that's very important to
- 01:07:16know about someone because if you ask
- 01:07:18your teenage daughter
- 01:07:20did you hear about the drug incident at
- 01:07:22school
- 01:07:24and they use truthful recall cues you're
- 01:07:27good Okay cool
- 01:07:29so how do I know when I'm lying it's
- 01:07:32coming okay okay so the second question
- 01:07:34I want you to answer the camera and by
- 01:07:35the way what was it
- 01:07:37what was what did I have for breakfast I
- 01:07:39don't think I ate anything okay good
- 01:07:41okay got it so you can do the all-in-one
- 01:07:43take it's even better like I like the
- 01:07:44pausing we want to see what you do in
- 01:07:46those moments of like what was it what
- 01:07:47was it okay second question I want you
- 01:07:50to tell me your most embarrassing story
- 01:07:53The more embarrassing the better I want
- 01:07:55to deliver it right to camera this is
- 01:07:58how you look when you're recalling
- 01:08:00something that makes you nervous the
- 01:08:03biggest mistake that we make in lie
- 01:08:04detection is we confuse nervousness for
- 01:08:07Guilt got it they are different
- 01:08:10so when you recall your most
- 01:08:12embarrassing story and I want you to
- 01:08:13like feel it you're like really feel it
- 01:08:15I want you to see what you do when
- 01:08:17you're nervous that's your nervous tell
- 01:08:19and those are also things you don't want
- 01:08:21to show when you're trying to come
- 01:08:22across as confident because they're your
- 01:08:24nervous leaks so common nervous tells
- 01:08:26are mashing the lips
- 01:08:28oh I think I just did that yeah we like
- 01:08:31try to hold it in yeah common nervous
- 01:08:34tells are uh um touching the stomach the
- 01:08:38face that's often well like a little
- 01:08:41nervous do people do this on Zoom calls
- 01:08:43too you see them doing this all the time
- 01:08:47all the time all the time it's a great
- 01:08:49way to I mean I don't want you to like
- 01:08:51do this to your colleagues without them
- 01:08:52knowing it it's always good to do it
- 01:08:53honestly but it's very helpful to know
- 01:08:55like on my team we do team calls every
- 01:08:57week
- 01:08:58oh my God I would hate to be honestly
- 01:09:00nervous
- 01:09:02what'd you say it's helpful to know when
- 01:09:04I'm making a teammate nervous
- 01:09:06right like I have a wonderful big team
- 01:09:09and if I share oh we're having a big New
- 01:09:11Year's launch and how does everyone feel
- 01:09:12and I know my team member's nervous tell
- 01:09:16and I see it on a zoom call I can say
- 01:09:18hey Rob are we are we good on that like
- 01:09:21any any hesitations any Hang-Ups that
- 01:09:24then gives him permission to say I don't
- 01:09:26know if the graphics are going to be
- 01:09:27ready in time
- 01:09:28so a deeper way to interact I believe is
- 01:09:31radical honesty where on my team we know
- 01:09:33each other's nervous tells so I can
- 01:09:35address them right can you give us the
- 01:09:38top five
- 01:09:40signs
- 01:09:42that somebody is nervous based on their
- 01:09:44body language yes so uh touching the
- 01:09:47hands touching the face
- 01:09:48touching the stomach that actually comes
- 01:09:50out of Cornell University they actually
- 01:09:51found that when we're nervous We Touch
- 01:09:52our stomach or we cleanse our stomach or
- 01:09:55we touch our face
- 01:09:57um third is uh purposeless gestures so
- 01:10:00ringing the hands cracking the knuckles
- 01:10:02touching the back of the neck gestures
- 01:10:05that have no purpose
- 01:10:07um
- 01:10:11with the necklace playing with your
- 01:10:13necklace fidgeting those are also false
- 01:10:15purposeless gestures
- 01:10:16uh adding unnecessary pauses or awkward
- 01:10:20pauses so some of the middle of a talk
- 01:10:23and
- 01:10:24they're they're really trying to explain
- 01:10:26it but they're pop their pausing is mid
- 01:10:30midward or mid-sentence like that
- 01:10:33if you call out somebody on a zoom
- 01:10:36meeting
- 01:10:37so they're nervous tell do they get more
- 01:10:39nervous
- 01:10:41it depends on how you do it right
- 01:10:42intention is everything here so I don't
- 01:10:45like being like that gotcha yeah that
- 01:10:48that's not a good way to interact with
- 01:10:49cues however if I notice like I'm on a
- 01:10:51team call and I say hey everyone we're
- 01:10:53having a big news launch and I noticed
- 01:10:55one of my team members shows a cluster
- 01:10:57of three nervous tells one one cue by
- 01:11:00itself does not usually mean anything
- 01:11:01right like for example we're going to
- 01:11:03talk about lying in the last the last
- 01:11:05question
- 01:11:06one of the top lying red flags is
- 01:11:07touching the nose
- 01:11:09so Liars have um we have a very specific
- 01:11:12kind of tissue in our nose and research
- 01:11:14has found that when we lie and we're in
- 01:11:16guilt it uh swells and it causes our
- 01:11:19nose to itch so Bill Clinton during his
- 01:11:21Monica Lewinsky testimony when he lied
- 01:11:23he touched his nose 26 times in his
- 01:11:26truthful testimony he touched his nose
- 01:11:28twice
- 01:11:29so this is a response that we have so um
- 01:11:32are you lying right now because you just
- 01:11:34touched your nose no I'm showing you I'm
- 01:11:35showing you because
- 01:11:37but also what if you have a geez what if
- 01:11:41you have a cold so one cue by itself is
- 01:11:43never good it's three cues so if I see
- 01:11:46someone knows touch
- 01:11:47and another
- 01:11:49um uh like interesting lying tell is a
- 01:11:52shame touch When We Touch the side of
- 01:11:53our forehead we often do this when we're
- 01:11:55very embarrassed it's an eye blocking
- 01:11:56Behavior
- 01:11:57and I see a lip purse
- 01:12:01so we press our lips into a hard line
- 01:12:03that's three very very big red flags in
- 01:12:06a row that's when I either will pause
- 01:12:08the zoom call and I'll be like hey
- 01:12:09everyone I just want to check in Rob
- 01:12:11does this sound doable to you this
- 01:12:13launch timeline are we good on this
- 01:12:14anything that I should know or we should
- 01:12:16that we're not thinking about
- 01:12:18that's me not me saying rob I saw you
- 01:12:21touch your nose which is like terrible
- 01:12:24but it's me checking in with him or I
- 01:12:26might afterwards hang up the zoom call
- 01:12:28text him or call him or email and say
- 01:12:31hey are you good with the launch I just
- 01:12:32want to make sure
- 01:12:34I believe in that got it okay that's
- 01:12:37super cool so how do I tell what my
- 01:12:39lying tell is okay so the last question
- 01:12:41so we did what you had for breakfast
- 01:12:43your most embarrassing story the last
- 01:12:44one is the most important I want you to
- 01:12:46make up an embarrassing story that did
- 01:12:49not happen to you and tell it to the
- 01:12:51camera and try to convince me it
- 01:12:53happened to you
- 01:12:54this is an example of what you do when
- 01:12:57you're trying to make up a completely
- 01:12:59false story and you will see exactly
- 01:13:01what you do when you lie wow
- 01:13:04that's so cool it's fine I want to do
- 01:13:07some rapid fire questions okay okay
- 01:13:11um so what are your top tips
- 01:13:15for displaying charisma
- 01:13:17and being more influential
- 01:13:21on a zoom call
- 01:13:24okay so on a zoom call specifically
- 01:13:29there's a couple nonverbal cues that
- 01:13:30translate really well over camera so one
- 01:13:33of them you do a lot which is a lean so
- 01:13:35a lien is a universal Charisma cue the
- 01:13:37reason for this is because when we're
- 01:13:38trying to understand something better
- 01:13:40when we activate our five senses we lean
- 01:13:42in we hear something better we lean in
- 01:13:44we want to see something better we lean
- 01:13:45in we want to smell something we lean in
- 01:13:46so a lean cue is what you can do on a
- 01:13:49zoom call when someone says something
- 01:13:50super interesting or powerful we do this
- 01:13:53in person but on Zoom we forget that we
- 01:13:55have that kind of personal reaction so
- 01:13:56if you were to say something Mel that
- 01:13:58was super impactful I would go really
- 01:14:01wow that's so interesting not even a lot
- 01:14:03just a couple of inches I want to do a
- 01:14:06little experiment here so you can
- 01:14:07actually feel this wherever you are
- 01:14:09right now if you're sitting or standing
- 01:14:11or running or cooking I want you to lean
- 01:14:14forward just two inches go ahead and try
- 01:14:16it with me
- 01:14:18what research has found is that when you
- 01:14:20lean forward two inches it actually
- 01:14:22activates a pre-action part of your
- 01:14:25brain it literally makes you more
- 01:14:27motivated
- 01:14:28and so what can happen is when you lean
- 01:14:31in it makes you a better listener it
- 01:14:34also is contagious it tells the other
- 01:14:36person wow they like what I'm saying so
- 01:14:39much they're literally trying to lean in
- 01:14:41to activate what I'm saying so you want
- 01:14:44to use the lean very purposely when you
- 01:14:46hear something good or when you're
- 01:14:47saying something that you want someone
- 01:14:49to pay attention to so if I for example
- 01:14:52even on this interview when I'm saying
- 01:14:53something that I really strongly believe
- 01:14:56in I will bold it by adding a liens I'll
- 01:15:00say this is one of the most important
- 01:15:03things I could share today
- 01:15:04that is a cue for you bold
- 01:15:07bold listen to this so liens for you
- 01:15:10listening and as a speaker I love that
- 01:15:13easy is there any phrase or something
- 01:15:18that you suggest particularly somebody
- 01:15:20who's shy or introverted to say or do
- 01:15:24during a virtual meeting to be more
- 01:15:27influential ah okay we didn't even talk
- 01:15:29about verb verbs we didn't even talk
- 01:15:31about words so words are incredibly
- 01:15:33important aspect of our Charisma that we
- 01:15:35also need to address right so for for
- 01:15:38verbal power what you want to do
- 01:15:41especially for my introverts and
- 01:15:43especially on a video call is use warmth
- 01:15:46verbal cues we actually did a study with
- 01:15:49Dr Paul Zach after Paul Zak is a big
- 01:15:51oxytocin researcher he's incredible he's
- 01:15:53one of my good friends where I wanted to
- 01:15:55know during the pandemic if saying warm
- 01:15:58words could stimulate connection so in
- 01:16:02other words I'm on a video call if we
- 01:16:03were in person Mel you and I would be
- 01:16:05hugging we'd you know high five we'd
- 01:16:07have some sort of touch I want to know
- 01:16:09could you replace that verbally what we
- 01:16:11found was we had people wear he created
- 01:16:13a software that people wear that
- 01:16:14measures their skin conductance their
- 01:16:16physiology when I say I'm sending a
- 01:16:19virtual high five
- 01:16:21I wish I could give you a digital hug
- 01:16:24I'm uh giving you a warm wave from here
- 01:16:27when I say those words it actually
- 01:16:29triggers a physiological response on
- 01:16:31your skin
- 01:16:32so one thing that you can do in the very
- 01:16:34start of a call or the very end of call
- 01:16:35is oh I wish I could give you a hug a
- 01:16:39virtual one will have to do oh or you
- 01:16:41know this has been so lovely talking to
- 01:16:42you I just feel so much warmth and I
- 01:16:44just had such a great time connecting
- 01:16:45with you using warm words connection
- 01:16:48warmth trust hug handshake they actually
- 01:16:52trigger a physiological response the
- 01:16:53other person so if you can use those
- 01:16:55warm words is a very easy way to trigger
- 01:16:57more warmth that's fantastic easy okay
- 01:17:00terrific what about emails how do you
- 01:17:03display more influence more Charisma in
- 01:17:06an email what is the pros what's the
- 01:17:09danger zone okay so remember the good
- 01:17:11news is by the way I just want to say a
- 01:17:14big rule here I'm sharing a lot of cues
- 01:17:17some of these cues you're gonna hear and
- 01:17:19you're going to be like oh that one is
- 01:17:21so good great some of the keys I'm going
- 01:17:23to say and you're going to be like
- 01:17:25I don't know about that that's good I
- 01:17:27actually want you to follow your
- 01:17:28instinct there are 96 cues in the book
- 01:17:31it's like a recipe there are some
- 01:17:33ingredients you're not going to like and
- 01:17:35I don't want you to do cues that you
- 01:17:36don't like for example
- 01:17:37um one of the cues I teach is a steeple
- 01:17:39right so it's when you just touch your
- 01:17:41fingers together and you make sort of
- 01:17:43like a church steeple if you watch Shark
- 01:17:44Tank Kevin O'Leary loves this gesture
- 01:17:46yes some people love it some people hate
- 01:17:50it if you love it great if you don't
- 01:17:51discard it so what I'm about to share Q
- 01:17:54wise I want you to make sure that you
- 01:17:56actually like it before you use it like
- 01:17:57you're able to use different ingredients
- 01:17:59like that's actually a good thing
- 01:18:01I totally forgot what the question was
- 01:18:02no problem actually let me ask you this
- 01:18:05one what are the danger zone cues on a
- 01:18:09virtual meeting what you can never do
- 01:18:11okay so great okay so danger zone key is
- 01:18:14in a virtual meeting one I always always
- 01:18:17always want you to front with the camera
- 01:18:21so research is very very clear what does
- 01:18:24that mean front with the printing okay
- 01:18:26so when we are aligned on Parallel Lines
- 01:18:29with someone our brain likes it so
- 01:18:31fronting is when I angle my toes my
- 01:18:34torso and my top towards the camera
- 01:18:36research has found that if I were to
- 01:18:38give the entire interview with one
- 01:18:41shoulder angled back and my toes angled
- 01:18:43out it would actually make it hard for
- 01:18:45you to believe me it would make it
- 01:18:47really hard for you to open up to me and
- 01:18:49so a mistake that I often see on Zoom
- 01:18:51calls is people will either angle out or
- 01:18:53the worst of the worst they have their
- 01:18:55camera on their side and they're typing
- 01:18:59like this
- 01:19:00oh yes I hate that I hate it I'm like
- 01:19:04just turn the damn camera off yes I
- 01:19:07would rather so one thing I want you to
- 01:19:09make sure of is your setup not only are
- 01:19:11you a foot and a half away but you are
- 01:19:13on Parallel Lines with the other person
- 01:19:15so you're angling your toes your torso
- 01:19:18and your head towards them this is both
- 01:19:19on zoom and in person even in person
- 01:19:21when someone is kind of angled out and
- 01:19:23they're trying to talk to you you can
- 01:19:25literally feel the disengagement the
- 01:19:27reason for this is because our toes are
- 01:19:30sort of Secret Windows into the soul
- 01:19:31that's what I like to call them your
- 01:19:34toes the way that they're pointed
- 01:19:36usually indicate a secret direction that
- 01:19:38you want to go so I have noticed
- 01:19:39anecdotally that when someone is ready
- 01:19:42to leave a conversation you're at a
- 01:19:43networking event or at a holiday party
- 01:19:45and they have to go to the bathroom or
- 01:19:47they're kind of done they will angle
- 01:19:49their toes towards the exit
- 01:19:51wow their body is like we gotta go we
- 01:19:55want to go so if I'm angled away from
- 01:19:58you with my toes angled towards the exit
- 01:20:00you're subconsciously picking up on the
- 01:20:02fact that part of me is left the
- 01:20:04conversation you know what I'm realizing
- 01:20:07that's
- 01:20:08stage one of me trying to get my husband
- 01:20:11Chris to leave a party I go up and walk
- 01:20:15up to him but I'm angled toward the door
- 01:20:18like let's go and I do that physically
- 01:20:21without realizing it before I put my
- 01:20:23hand on my back and they're like let's
- 01:20:25go so so interesting okay so we know
- 01:20:28danger zone you got to you gotta face
- 01:20:32the camera you got to be pointed at the
- 01:20:34camera toes at the camera otherwise
- 01:20:36you're signaling lack of interest and
- 01:20:39not that competent either if you're not
- 01:20:41paying attention another digital queue
- 01:20:43is a facial cue that I wanna I just want
- 01:20:45to point out so
- 01:20:46um resting bothered face right resting
- 01:20:50bothered face is when at rest our
- 01:20:52Facebook looks bothered
- 01:20:54um I have resting bothered face rather
- 01:20:56badly and that is important to
- 01:20:58understand about yourself because
- 01:20:59sometimes at rest people will say are
- 01:21:02you angry are you tired you should know
- 01:21:06what your resting face looks like
- 01:21:08so for example if your resting face my
- 01:21:12resting face looks like sadness so
- 01:21:14sadness is universal micro expression so
- 01:21:16sadness is when are the corners of our
- 01:21:18mouth turn down into an upside down U
- 01:21:20and when our eyelids droop and sometimes
- 01:21:23even our our eyebrows pinch together
- 01:21:25when I'm at rest I tend to look a little
- 01:21:28sad because that's how my mouth points
- 01:21:32this is important for me to know because
- 01:21:34if you look sad at rest people are going
- 01:21:37to assume you're disappointed you're low
- 01:21:39energy how about anger what if you have
- 01:21:42anger so anger is a different look I
- 01:21:44don't have this but I know people who do
- 01:21:45so people I do have a yeah who have
- 01:21:48anger at rest they pinch their eyebrows
- 01:21:51with these two vertical lines appear in
- 01:21:54between their eyebrows they might be
- 01:21:55concentrating but they look a little
- 01:21:57irritated a little frustrated a little
- 01:21:59angry
- 01:22:00none of these are right or wrong but
- 01:22:02it's important to know how people might
- 01:22:04be perceiving you when you're just
- 01:22:05listening so since I know that I look
- 01:22:08sad I work hard especially when I'm
- 01:22:11listening to someone and trying to
- 01:22:12encourage them to dial up warmth
- 01:22:15if you know that you look angry at rest
- 01:22:18it's really important for you to dial up
- 01:22:22making someone feel reassured making
- 01:22:24someone feel like they're not
- 01:22:25frustrating you that you're really happy
- 01:22:27with them that way verbally you're
- 01:22:29overcoming that resting face yeah so
- 01:22:32like the three head nod the um yeah oh
- 01:22:36wow yeah okay see I just got rid of the
- 01:22:40[ __ ] face and now I'm signaling that
- 01:22:42I'm taking the cues here this is great
- 01:22:45all right now what are strategies for
- 01:22:49dialing up Charisma and influence warmth
- 01:22:52and competency in emails okay emails yes
- 01:22:56so I love in an email the most important
- 01:22:59thing you have to do in email is break
- 01:23:01social scripts
- 01:23:03so what happened in the email we're so
- 01:23:05overflow overload with email so I love
- 01:23:09running tests on our email newsletter so
- 01:23:10we have an email newsletter and I can
- 01:23:12actually see what's getting open rates
- 01:23:14what's getting click rates and one thing
- 01:23:15that we've found is anytime we are we
- 01:23:18trigger someone's autopilot is when we
- 01:23:20use a subject like follow-up
- 01:23:23or information
- 01:23:25or update or next week's meeting
- 01:23:31telling the other person go to sleep
- 01:23:35go to sleep so are you saying we can
- 01:23:37have fun in work emails yes now fun what
- 01:23:41I mean is use Charisma verbal cues so
- 01:23:44there is this is Art not science
- 01:23:47certain words trigger an emotional
- 01:23:51response okay so one study this is a
- 01:23:54really interesting study what they did
- 01:23:56is they wanted to know if achievement
- 01:23:59oriented words could make people achieve
- 01:24:02more so achievement Oriental words are
- 01:24:04words like win success Master achieve
- 01:24:08compete race
- 01:24:10even me just saying the word win
- 01:24:13could actually change the way your brain
- 01:24:15thinks so here's what they did a very
- 01:24:16simple experiment they write people into
- 01:24:17their lab
- 01:24:18they slip up into two different groups
- 01:24:20the first group got an intelligence test
- 01:24:23with a very simple set of directions
- 01:24:25these directions were completely
- 01:24:26autopilot socially scripted sterile
- 01:24:28please take the following test the best
- 01:24:31of your ability you have 10 minutes to
- 01:24:33complete it please use a pencil okay
- 01:24:35very very basic directions you've read a
- 01:24:37million times before the second set of
- 01:24:39directions was the same word count so
- 01:24:42not longer not shorter but they
- 01:24:45sprinkled in they swapped in a couple of
- 01:24:47achievement oriented words
- 01:24:49so uh please perform well on this
- 01:24:52achievement test the more answers you
- 01:24:53can win correctly the better please
- 01:24:56succeed with a pencil right so they just
- 01:24:58sprinkled in yeah two words they found
- 01:25:01that just three or four achievement
- 01:25:03orange Awards not only made them perform
- 01:25:05better on the intelligence test it
- 01:25:09doubled
- 01:25:10doubled the participants desire to keep
- 01:25:12working on the test wow that's pretty
- 01:25:15cool it's so cool because it means in
- 01:25:18your emails you can gift Behavior change
- 01:25:21okay so for Charisma which impacts
- 01:25:24influence and income and uh interest or
- 01:25:28in whatever the heck they are uh impact
- 01:25:30so for email what words do we want to
- 01:25:33use are we throwing in emojis and Gifts
- 01:25:35like how does this work obviously not
- 01:25:37all caps and tons of explanation points
- 01:25:39but no no okay so what I like in an
- 01:25:42email is to have it I have samples of
- 01:25:44this in the book if you want to like
- 01:25:45read a template is I want you to have
- 01:25:48warm words a couple of warm words warm
- 01:25:50words trigger the warm and fuzzies so so
- 01:25:53happy to connect with you last week I'm
- 01:25:55so looking forward to collaborating in
- 01:25:56our meeting next week when people read
- 01:25:58words like collaborate they are
- 01:26:00literally more likely to be
- 01:26:01collaborative okay so you were actually
- 01:26:04gifting Behavior what I want you to
- 01:26:05think about when you're writing an email
- 01:26:06this is a really weird way to write an
- 01:26:08email but it works
- 01:26:09how do I want someone to think feel and
- 01:26:13behave after reading this email
- 01:26:15if you want them to be warm and
- 01:26:17collaborative and open and happy and
- 01:26:19trustworthy use those words you are
- 01:26:21literally gifting them that feeling but
- 01:26:23if you want them to get it done be
- 01:26:25productive and efficient let's
- 01:26:27brainstorm let's power through onward
- 01:26:29let's do it I want you to gift more
- 01:26:32competent words
- 01:26:33so the perfect email yes has a balance
- 01:26:36of let's connect let's collaborate I
- 01:26:38can't wait for the meeting next week and
- 01:26:40let's blast through this agenda I can't
- 01:26:43wait to hit our goals we're gonna do
- 01:26:45everything together onwards Vanessa you
- 01:26:47know what I hear is I hear enthusiasm I
- 01:26:50hear confidence in those words you're
- 01:26:52displaying that which then signals to me
- 01:26:55that I'm on a team that wants to do that
- 01:26:57you want to know one word I don't like
- 01:26:59in an email oh tell me I hate that Trend
- 01:27:04that started a couple years ago
- 01:27:07where people would generically sign
- 01:27:09everything best best best to me as a
- 01:27:14sign off
- 01:27:15is like passive aggressive not
- 01:27:18interested phony pretending I give a
- 01:27:21[ __ ] that's what best means to me and
- 01:27:23it's socially scripted right like yes it
- 01:27:26doesn't even mean best it doesn't even
- 01:27:27mean anything a little experiment that
- 01:27:29we did in our newsletters is I was
- 01:27:31trying different sign-offs and I wanted
- 01:27:33to know if I could change like people's
- 01:27:36perception of Me based on the side off
- 01:27:37and so now I use after a series of tests
- 01:27:40always every setup of my email is to
- 01:27:42your success Vanessa oh thank thank you
- 01:27:46Vanessa it's a gift it's like success
- 01:27:50I love that and you know what I just
- 01:27:52noticed hmm
- 01:27:53I
- 01:27:55spoke
- 01:27:57at the end of my breath so I was like oh
- 01:27:59thank you Vanessa like I went up on that
- 01:28:02and I don't know if that means that I
- 01:28:04was not being uh I actually mean it so
- 01:28:08now I'm going to breathe
- 01:28:09thank you Vanessa
- 01:28:11[Laughter]
- 01:28:13but it but actually that was authentic
- 01:28:15because you were up it was it was a
- 01:28:17compliment it was appeasement yes so you
- 01:28:19were encouraging liking so you went
- 01:28:21really high because you loved it well
- 01:28:23you did well we're around babies and
- 01:28:24puppies we go really high like this
- 01:28:26because we really really want them to
- 01:28:28feel good that's good oh that's so nice
- 01:28:31yeah but but remember all of our all of
- 01:28:35our uh people Pleasers out there
- 01:28:39speaking like that around puppies and
- 01:28:42babies and when you truly mean it
- 01:28:45because you want to compliment something
- 01:28:46someone that's great
- 01:28:48speaking like that all the time because
- 01:28:50you are seeking reassurance or seeking
- 01:28:53being liked that's killing your ability
- 01:28:56to be respected and it's also not
- 01:28:58authentic and this works with toddlers
- 01:29:01right I have a toddler four and a half
- 01:29:03she's not even taller anymore if I'm
- 01:29:05serious with my toddler I go real low
- 01:29:08right I'm real I'm like Sienna uh-uh we
- 01:29:12are not doing that and she hears it so
- 01:29:14you also can use when you're talking to
- 01:29:16your baby or your puppy or a toddler and
- 01:29:18you're like good job wonderful job don't
- 01:29:20touch that
- 01:29:22there's a big difference they hear that
- 01:29:24too little ones there ever oh do they
- 01:29:27ever like when Chris lowers his tone of
- 01:29:29voice everything in this house stops
- 01:29:32when the three kids are here so another
- 01:29:34quick question
- 01:29:35what are the body language cues
- 01:29:40that somebody that you're dating is into
- 01:29:43you ooh how fun okay so when we really
- 01:29:47like something we want to get as close
- 01:29:49as possible we also are trying to
- 01:29:50produce as much oxytocin we have not
- 01:29:52talked about haptics which is a fancy
- 01:29:54word for touch so this is a little bit
- 01:29:56different culture culture but
- 01:29:57universally when we physically touch in
- 01:30:00any ways that can be an arm touch a hug
- 01:30:01a cheek kiss a back Pat We produce
- 01:30:04oxytocin that chemical connection so
- 01:30:06when we really like someone we are
- 01:30:08really wanting to produce that oxytocin
- 01:30:10so if someone's very into you they will
- 01:30:13look for any and every opportunity to
- 01:30:15touch right so extra long hug two cheek
- 01:30:19kiss they reach across the table they
- 01:30:20touch your hand they touch your back
- 01:30:22when you're walking by they touch your
- 01:30:23shoulder when they laugh they touch the
- 01:30:25side of your arm those are all conscious
- 01:30:28and subconscious ways of saying I want
- 01:30:30more chemical I want more oxytocin
- 01:30:32because oxytocin is what gets us to kiss
- 01:30:34it's what makes us feel really
- 01:30:36attractive the more oxytocin that's
- 01:30:38flowing through our bodies the more we
- 01:30:39feel like wow
- 01:30:40this person and I we are just getting
- 01:30:43each other so looking for lots of
- 01:30:45opportunities to touch this is also that
- 01:30:47you can signal that you're very into
- 01:30:49someone right is taking small
- 01:30:50opportunities to touch a note here is as
- 01:30:54you move up the arm the touch becomes
- 01:30:56more intimate
- 01:30:58so the least intimate part of the body
- 01:31:00is the hand right we hand shake that's
- 01:31:03because we can handshake someone really
- 01:31:04far away from our torso and our most
- 01:31:06vulnerable parts of our body right yeah
- 01:31:08so that's the least intimate if you are
- 01:31:10not that into someone or you're not sure
- 01:31:12you'll you'll notice the hand touching
- 01:31:13so not only handshake but someone might
- 01:31:15touch your hand or touch the back of
- 01:31:16your hands that's the least intimate the
- 01:31:18farther up the arm you go into the Torso
- 01:31:21into the back the more intimate the
- 01:31:22touch is so I always say start slow
- 01:31:25right that's right and you know what
- 01:31:27happens when you reach the armpit it's
- 01:31:29ticklish
- 01:31:30and very intimate and just very into it
- 01:31:33that's right and it activates those
- 01:31:35pheromones too
- 01:31:37um let's talk disrespect oh yes how does
- 01:31:41somebody that is charismatic
- 01:31:44handle disrespect with warmth and
- 01:31:47confidence so
- 01:31:51first of all you want to activate
- 01:31:53reciprocity remember that the more
- 01:31:56charismatic we are the more contagious
- 01:31:57we are so the very very first step is
- 01:31:59what we've been talking about this
- 01:32:00entire time which is you want to Signal
- 01:32:02warmth and competence and hope they
- 01:32:04catch up that's the very first thing
- 01:32:06right if you are feeling cold disrespect
- 01:32:09dismissal
- 01:32:11um one of the things that drives me
- 01:32:12crazy is like dismissive body language
- 01:32:14someone who kind of isn't actually
- 01:32:16engaging with me so the very first thing
- 01:32:18I try is I gift them a lot of warmth and
- 01:32:21competence and this is really important
- 01:32:22our instinct when someone is snubbing us
- 01:32:26or disrespecting us is to pull away
- 01:32:29our instinct is to go on offensive or
- 01:32:31defensive that is actually what I don't
- 01:32:34want you to do the moment that someone
- 01:32:35disrespects you if you go on offensive
- 01:32:37which is it's your fault how dare you I
- 01:32:40don't like you you are immediately going
- 01:32:42to trigger more disrespect right I also
- 01:32:44don't want you to go on defensive it's
- 01:32:45not me it's not my problem I I don't you
- 01:32:48know it's not all about it's all about
- 01:32:49you not me that also makes you someone
- 01:32:52disengaged so instead I want you to
- 01:32:53fight your instinct and gift
- 01:32:56gift warmth gift competence hope that
- 01:32:59rubs off on them
- 01:33:00second if it doesn't work if you're if
- 01:33:02you're gifting and it's not happening to
- 01:33:04you
- 01:33:04I believe in direct radical transparency
- 01:33:08and direct honesty saying exactly what
- 01:33:10you need and sometimes that's hey I
- 01:33:13don't know if you're feeling this I
- 01:33:14don't know if you're into this you seem
- 01:33:15really frustrated but here's what I need
- 01:33:17today
- 01:33:18I will often call out and use words like
- 01:33:21upset frustrated confused hard difficult
- 01:33:25to talk to sometimes calling out the
- 01:33:28emotion allows the person to correct you
- 01:33:31so in times I've said you know I can see
- 01:33:33you're a little bit upset or I can see
- 01:33:35her a little bit frustrated and they'll
- 01:33:36say no I'm not frustrated I'm
- 01:33:38disappointed ah
- 01:33:41now we're getting somewhere so if you
- 01:33:44offer a word that you think they're
- 01:33:46feeling they'll either say yes I am
- 01:33:49frustrated I don't know why XYZ deadline
- 01:33:51wasn't meant or they correct you with
- 01:33:53the right emotion that gives you so much
- 01:33:55information so hopefully you can move
- 01:33:57past this respect and actually have a
- 01:33:59productive conversation as opposed to
- 01:34:00this
- 01:34:01back and forth it's not working amazing
- 01:34:04one final question and this is a gift to
- 01:34:08my shy introverts out there
- 01:34:10okay can you give us five surprising
- 01:34:14silent
- 01:34:16charismatic cues that will help someone
- 01:34:21command respect yes so the most
- 01:34:24important one for introverts silent is
- 01:34:27mirroring
- 01:34:28so mirroring is a highly charismatic cue
- 01:34:30because when we really like someone when
- 01:34:33we're on the same page with them what
- 01:34:34research has found is that we
- 01:34:36subconsciously mirror they're nonverbal
- 01:34:39so if you're with someone and you don't
- 01:34:41want to speak you don't want to share a
- 01:34:42lot the verbal is maybe less of your
- 01:34:44favorite mode of communication one gift
- 01:34:46you can give them to be highly
- 01:34:48charismatic yourself is to mirror them
- 01:34:50very subtly
- 01:34:52so if they are leaning in you're leaning
- 01:34:54in if they're nodding their head a lot
- 01:34:57you nod your head a lot if they're using
- 01:34:58less gestures maybe you use less
- 01:35:00gestures this is a way that highly
- 01:35:02charismatic people will dial up or dial
- 01:35:04down Oprah does this exceptionally well
- 01:35:06watch her interviews with high energy
- 01:35:09people her high energy interviews she
- 01:35:11dials up her energy she literally uses
- 01:35:14more hand gestures more movement more
- 01:35:16leans more nods she's more expressive
- 01:35:18with her face
- 01:35:19in her low energy interviews she doesn't
- 01:35:22try to convince them or change them she
- 01:35:24matches she dials down she becomes less
- 01:35:26expressive yeah she uses more calm hand
- 01:35:28gestures so mirroring is one okay the
- 01:35:31second one is an eyebrow raise so an
- 01:35:33eyebrow raise is a universal gesture of
- 01:35:35I'm listening I'm open tell me more
- 01:35:38that the kind of funny one is
- 01:35:40romantically if I were to you know Mel
- 01:35:42signal to you across the bar and go you
- 01:35:43know
- 01:35:44with my eyebrows it's a signal of
- 01:35:47Interest right over again all right yeah
- 01:35:49right so that's signal of Interest so
- 01:35:51introverts
- 01:35:53and do this instead of speaking so if
- 01:35:55you're in a board room or in a zoom
- 01:35:57meeting on a date and you want to
- 01:35:59encourage someone by saying I'm
- 01:36:00listening tell me more
- 01:36:02you can literally raise your eyebrows up
- 01:36:04you can also do this while you're
- 01:36:05speaking so um uh Neil deGrasse Tyson
- 01:36:08uses this queue a lot so he I found this
- 01:36:11great uh quote with him where he said he
- 01:36:14writes books based on eyebrow raising
- 01:36:17things he says so one little test he
- 01:36:20does is he goes on airplanes
- 01:36:22by the way I would love to sit next to
- 01:36:24Neil deGrasse Tyson on an airplane heels
- 01:36:26in airplanes and he starts talking to
- 01:36:28the person next to him and he shares a
- 01:36:29bunch of facts about space
- 01:36:31he's an astrophysicist Space and Science
- 01:36:33and he says every time the other person
- 01:36:36goes really and raises their eyebrows up
- 01:36:39he writes it down
- 01:36:40and he says he only puts things in his
- 01:36:43book that people raise their eyebrows at
- 01:36:45because it's cool specific Cube
- 01:36:47curiosity so you can raise your eyebrows
- 01:36:49we can also look for eyebrow raises okay
- 01:36:51so that's number two number three yeah I
- 01:36:53noticed when you raise your eyebrows you
- 01:36:54also cocked your head is that another
- 01:36:56way to demonstrate
- 01:36:58so command respect am I allowed to do
- 01:37:01three and four which is the head tilted
- 01:37:02nodding because of course they're so
- 01:37:04good so warming so knotting and head
- 01:37:07tool thing and then I want to do a
- 01:37:08different one I'm going to say
- 01:37:10specifically mirroring empathy and what
- 01:37:13I mean by this is introverts have a
- 01:37:16superpower they are so good at observing
- 01:37:19they are so good at spotting emotions
- 01:37:22that other people miss and spotting
- 01:37:23emotional needs that's your superpowers
- 01:37:25that's what you should use so if you see
- 01:37:28someone in authentic happiness you
- 01:37:30should be mirroring that happiness back
- 01:37:32to them and then a capitalizing that
- 01:37:34happiness that could be mirroring the
- 01:37:36smile back to them that could be dialing
- 01:37:38up your gestures but it also could be
- 01:37:39negative so if you see someone who's in
- 01:37:41sadness you can mirror that Sadness by
- 01:37:44showing that empathy so if someone's
- 01:37:45really sad and they pinch their eyebrows
- 01:37:47together and they droop the corners of
- 01:37:50their
- 01:37:51um their lips down and you can see that
- 01:37:53they're really struggling you can do
- 01:37:55that with them and say I hear you or you
- 01:37:57have to say anything you if you have a
- 01:37:59friend who's sharing some that makes
- 01:38:00them sad and you show sadness you are
- 01:38:02literally saying I care about you so
- 01:38:05much that I want to take on the
- 01:38:06emotional burden with you and I think
- 01:38:09that is beautiful
- 01:38:10ah you know what else is beautiful
- 01:38:13all the wisdom and knowledge you just
- 01:38:15dropped today like a freaking bomb on
- 01:38:19all of the things that we have been
- 01:38:22doing that we didn't realize that were
- 01:38:25lowering our influence our impact and
- 01:38:28the income that we're making and so I
- 01:38:31want to take a minute on behalf of
- 01:38:33absolutely everybody listening to thank
- 01:38:36you oh because this was so tact this was
- 01:38:40so Tactical
- 01:38:41this was so smart and informative and
- 01:38:46the other reason why I loved this
- 01:38:49conversation so much is because
- 01:38:51everything that you shared
- 01:38:54we can put to use immediately
- 01:38:57and it tracks back to this research that
- 01:39:0182 percent
- 01:39:03of how somebody
- 01:39:07sizes you up whether or not you
- 01:39:10influence them what they think of you
- 01:39:11has to do with your charisma and how
- 01:39:15you're displaying warmth and competency
- 01:39:17and you gave us the gift
- 01:39:20of teaching us how to do it with
- 01:39:23specific tools I cannot thank you enough
- 01:39:25Vanessa we have got to have you back I'm
- 01:39:27sure we're going to have a gajillion
- 01:39:29questions about specific situations and
- 01:39:34so just thank you thank you thank you
