chapter 11 has some of the most detailed

prophecy is so detailed that um some

Scholars those that don't believe that
00:00:21
future prophecy is a real thing uh have
00:00:23
come to the assumption that Daniel 11
00:00:26
must have been written not in the days
00:00:27
of Daniel but hundreds of years later
00:00:30
after the days of the macbes because
00:00:32
it's going to tell that story and and I
00:00:34
agree that tells that story although I
00:00:37
personally do believe that prophecy is a
00:00:39
thing and so I don't have a problem
00:00:40
saying that this was uh part of Daniel's
00:00:43
writing in the days of
00:00:45
Daniel chapter 11:3 talks about a mighty
00:00:48
king who will arise and he will rule
00:00:49
with great Authority and do as he
00:00:51
pleases um by all accounts this sounds
00:00:53
very much like Alexander the Great and
00:00:56
we already discussed him in a few
00:00:58
classes ago so not going to go over that
00:01:01
again but as soon as he is Arisen his
00:01:03
kingdom will be broken up and parceled
00:01:06
out toward the four points of the
00:01:07
compass again we saw this happen in our
00:01:10
last class the uh the successors of
00:01:13
Alexander uh notice though not to his
00:01:16
own descendants his own descendants
00:01:17
didn't receive anything it was these
00:01:19
generals uh nor according to his
00:01:21
authority which he wielded for his
00:01:23
sovereignty will be uprooted and given

to others beside them uh and that that

happened we talked about Tommy and Lucas

and lmus and cassander and others um
00:01:34
that actually took
00:01:35
place verse 5 then the King of the South

and we said you know if you go south and

the directions here are based upon where
00:01:43
is Judah you say well actually Egypt is

a little bit to the Southwest that's
00:01:46
close enough for government work uh so

the King of the South that's tmy will
00:01:51
grow strong along with one of his
00:01:53
princes who will gain ascendancy over
00:01:55
him and obtain Dominion his Dominion

that is one of his princes will be a
00:02:00
great Dominion indeed and we uh already
00:02:03
saw how tmy the first took Egypt but
00:02:05
then ccas who had been a general under
00:02:07
him ended up taking Syria and
00:02:10
Mesopotamia as well um and founding the
00:02:13
city of Antioch um so you have uh sucus

and then his son Antiochus the first uh
00:02:21
reigning from from
00:02:23
Antioch after some years this is verse
00:02:26
six after some years they will form an
00:02:27
alliance and the daughter of the king of
00:02:29
the South will come to the King of the
00:02:32
North to car carry out a peaceful
00:02:34
Arrangement and so you have Antiochus

the second by now and he already has a
00:02:41
wife his wife's name is leoi now I know
00:02:44
it sound looks like you we would
00:02:45
pronounce that leod Leo I don't know
00:02:48
leodis or something like that um they
00:02:50
have no letter C in Greek so whenever

you see C translated as a k sound so

leoi uh and but to to have this alliance

with tmy what he's going to do and they

already have a son they've been married

a while uh so their son is Lucas II but

Tommy has a sister I'm sorry Daughter by

order to have this Alliance uh Antiochus

will not retain her position of power

nor will he remain with his power uh so

yes that Alliance is made but tmy thei

dies that's the Tommy that were that

we're looking at uh and um Antioch

brings back his first wife and biki

she's going to be sort of left left out

in the cold uh so notice the prophecy

says she will be given up along with

those who brought her in and the one who

sired her as well as he who supported

her in those times and so uh leoi is is

brought back as as the number one wife

now she's not too happy with the fact
00:04:25
that she was divorced in order to make
00:04:27
room for that Alliance so she's going to
00:04:29
get back at her former and new husband

II um she's going to make sure that you

know he dies she poisons him and now
00:04:42
she's still the mother of the Crown

Prince so uh she's not going to be put

to death for that but that leaves

beri U all alone with a woman who has

already poisoned her own husband uh

because he had divorced her and married

biki and so she's she's going to be in

trouble so uh so Lucas II now becomes

the king uh this is after the death of

II the prophecy goes on verse 7 but one

of the descendants of her line will

arise in his place and he will come

against their army and Enter The

Fortress of the King of the North so

that's Tommy thei

now and he's going to come up against
00:05:24
them but biki and by now she has she has

an infant son with that former marriage

and they are both killed so notice uh

they'll enter The Fortress of the King

of the North and he will deal with them

and display great strength you know

there there's fighting that's going on

between these two families that now has

broken into open

War also their gods with their metal

images and their precious vessels of

silver and gold he will take into

captivity so Tommy III actually has some

success and he on his part will refrain

from attacking the King of the North for

some years so he goes He raids he

attacks he takes what loot he grabbed

and goes back to Egypt and for a time

there is peace well at least there you

know somebody defined peace is that time

where everybody stops to reload and I

think that's what's happening here so

Tommy II had conducted raids in the

ceasefire now verse n then the latter

will enter the realm of the King of the

South but will return to his own land so

attack but he's going to go back notice

his sons uh and now you go from sucas II

to two of his sons sucas I thir and

Antiochus the thir his sons will

mobilize and assemble a multitude of

great forces and one of them and it's

let me just say it's going to be antias

the third that's the the big military
00:07:02
man one of them will keep on coming and

overflow and pass through that he may
00:07:07
wage war up to his very Fortress and
00:07:10
he's going to he's going to actually
00:07:12
enter ter Egyptian

territory so this is Antiochus III now

who's doing

that and we read in verse 11 the King of
00:07:21
the South will be enraged and go forth
00:07:23
and fight with the King of the North uh
00:07:25
you see this big Clash about to take
00:07:27
place then the latter will raise a great
00:07:29
multitude but that multitude will be
00:07:30
given into the hand of the former so
00:07:33
Antiochus and toomy each go out and
00:07:36
there is a historical battle in in the
00:07:39
year 27 BC at a place called Rafia it's
00:07:42
a bit south of the area of Gaza it's
00:07:45
right on the coast and uh anticus III uh
00:07:50
he's thinking to attain a great Victory
00:07:52
but he actually loses the battle now he
00:07:55
loses the battle not in his home turf
00:07:57
but but down uh trying to uh trying to
00:08:00
face
00:08:01
Egypt verse 12 when the multitude is
00:08:03
carried away his heart will be lifted up
00:08:05
and he will cause tens of thousands to
00:08:07
fall yet he will not Prevail and so it's
00:08:10
a it's a major battle and now it's not
00:08:12
just sniping back and forth this is a
00:08:14
major battle and yet he fails uh has
00:08:18
heavy
00:08:19
casualties verse 13 for the King of the
00:08:22
North will again raise a greater
00:08:24
multitude than the former so uh even
00:08:27
though he has tried and failed he's
00:08:29
going to try again and after an interval
00:08:32
of some years he will press on with a
00:08:34
great Army and much equipment and this
00:08:37
time not at Rafia but this time at a
00:08:39
place called Bas now Bas um if you go to
00:08:43
the very Northern point of Israel uh you
00:08:46
you come to a place uh north of the Sea
00:08:48
of Galilee called Dan uh the tribe of
00:08:50
Dan didn't like their inheritance and
00:08:52
they had moved here um and that is also
00:08:54
the place of this city Bas is in the
00:08:58
exactly the same area and this is where
00:09:00
they fight um 200 BC a number of years
00:09:03
have
00:09:04
passed verse 14 now in those times many
00:09:07
will rise up against the King of the
00:09:08
South the violent ones among your people
00:09:11
will also lift themselves up notice your
00:09:13
people that's that's Dan Daniel's the
00:09:16
the one who's being addressed here this
00:09:18
is a prophecy that Daniel is receiving
00:09:20
from an Angel um the violent ones among
00:09:22
your people will also lift themselves up
00:09:24
in order to fulfill the vision but they
00:09:26
will fall down and so what happens now
00:09:28
you have a prol party that erupts in
00:09:31
Jerusalem and you can see why that would
00:09:33
happen because remember to the the
00:09:35
original Tommy had captured Jerusalem we
00:09:38
saw this in the last class uh through
00:09:40
guile attacking on the Sabbath day had
00:09:42
done some damage to the city uh so there
00:09:44
had been a you know a bit of a anti- tmy

you know just just idea there just

because of that and now there's a pro

elcid party this there in Jerusalem and

this is actually put down very heavily

by the tommies they're not going to

allow that sort of thing so so they go

General though that is in charge

remember they had been at Banias and

Egyptian General now retreats to sedone

sedone is the southern one of the

Southern Phoenician

cities verse 15 and the the King of the
00:10:30
North will come cast up a Siege ramp and
00:10:33
capture a well fortified City that's
00:10:35
sedone and the forces of the South and
00:10:38
that falls in 198 BC and the forces of
00:10:41
the South will not stand their ground
00:10:43
nor even their choices troops for there
00:10:45
will be no strength to make a stand so

it's going heavily in favor of antus III

he he's winning this
00:10:52
time he continues but he who comes
00:10:55
against him will do as he pleases and no
00:10:58
one will be able to stand him he will

also stay for a time in the beautiful

land that's that's Judah that's the the

land of the Jews with destruction in his

hand verse 17 he will set his face to
00:11:11
come with the power of his whole Kingdom

bringing with him a proposal of Peace

which he will put into effect he will

also give him the daughter of women to
00:11:20
ruin it but she will not take a stand

for him or be on his side so now the
00:11:24
peace isn't just going to be with Judah
00:11:25
the peace is actually going to be with
00:11:27
Egypt and so uh now I thir proposes an
00:11:30
alliance with tmy the 5th and to seal
00:11:33
the alliance how do you seal an alliance
00:11:35
you have a marriage where we're going to
00:11:37
be family and so his uh his daughter
00:11:40
Cleopatra now this isn't the same
00:11:42
Cleopatra that we're going to see later
00:11:43
on but it's the same name and it's
00:11:46
coming from the same extended family
00:11:48
okay uh when you see the the Cleopatra

in the days of the of the Romans that's

going to be one of the tommies uh and

and here's how the name comes to them uh

so he gives his daughter CLE atra uh to

be the wife of Tommy the and the idea

she's my daughter and she's loyal to me

Greek but they're ruling over Egypt and

so um that doesn't work out in the favor

Time Verse 18 then he will turn his face

to the coastlands now there's coastlands

all around the area but when you talk

about the coastlands you're talking

about those areas that uh the far off

Coast not just the coast of Israel so

then he will turn his face to the
00:12:48
coastlands and capture many but a
00:12:50
commander will put a stop to his scorn

against him more over he will repay him

for his scorn so Antiochus now invades

Greece and notice you have in the in the
00:13:02
west you've got both Rome and Carthage
00:13:05
and they've been having some serious
00:13:06
fighting over the years you they've
00:13:08
engaged in a war um it's known as the
00:13:12
Punic War that's named after the puni or
00:13:15
the Phoenicians which Carthage is a
00:13:17
Phoenician Colony even though Phoenicia
00:13:19
is just North of Judah and and Rome had
00:13:22
won first one war and then a second and
00:13:26
the second was really hard to to hard to
00:13:28
win because the carthaginians had a uh a
00:13:31
general that was a supreme strategist
00:13:34
named Hannibal uh and Hannibal had
00:13:37
actually taken the war into Italy itself
00:13:39
he had taken uh elephants and marched uh
00:13:42
from Spain across the Alps and down into
00:13:44
Rome and had just made a mess of Rome
00:13:47
over a period of many many years and it
00:13:49
wasn't until the Romans had sent a a
00:13:52
fleet of ships to Carthage and attack
00:13:53
Carthage headon that they had called for
00:13:56
Hannibal's return he had returned he had
00:13:58
fought uh skipio africanis that's how
00:14:01
skipio Africanus got the his his
00:14:02
nickname Africanus is winning winning
00:14:05
against Hannibal and Carthage had fallen
00:14:09
uh and Hannibal the enemy of Rome had
00:14:12
fled to the east to find Refuge who's
00:14:15
going to be his friend well Antiochus
00:14:18
III had become his friend and had housed
00:14:21
housed Hannibal so that put him on the
00:14:24
negative side of Rome so he um and he gu
00:14:29
third is defeated by Rome uh in GRE he's
00:14:31
fighting in Greece not not in his
00:14:33
homeland uh at thermopol remember
00:14:35
theropo was a place where where CES had
00:14:39
fought the uh the the 300 Spartans uh
00:14:43
but and also at a place called magnesia
00:14:44
so two battles that he had he had fought
00:14:47
against Rome and two battles he at that
00:14:50
point he said well that's enough I'm I'm

losing uh and he has uh he had he had
00:14:56
surrendered from Greece he he turned
00:14:58
from Greece and now he was required by
00:15:02
Rome uh in order to obtain the peace

with Rome to send hostages to Rome

including his youngest son so he's going

to send his son Antiochus IV to Rome as
00:15:14
a

hostage so verse 19 so he will turn his
00:15:19
face toward the Fortress of his own land
00:15:21
but he will stumble and fall and be
00:15:24
found no more now what happens is Rome
00:15:26
follows antias the third into Anatolia
00:15:29
and um because anti had had uh attacked
00:15:33
some cities in western Ania that had
00:15:36
been friends of Rome and Rome says you
00:15:39
can't attack our friends and so uh
00:15:41
antias had to not only send one of his
00:15:44
sons his hostage but he also had to
00:15:46
raise money to pay off Rome and where's
00:15:49
he going to get the money well he
00:15:50
actually travels to uh Mesopotamia and
00:15:54
he goes to uh different temples uh that
00:15:57
that's where a place where you go to
00:15:59
find money we're going to see that in
00:16:00
just a minute uh and while he is
00:16:02
plundering an elite Temple that's Elum
00:16:04
is uh in just southeast of Mesopotamia
00:16:08
while he's plundering an elite Temple he
00:16:10
is killed by the mob and anti the third
00:16:14
sometimes we call him anti the great I'm
00:16:16
not sure if he was that great um but uh
00:16:18
he meets a great end uh at that
00:16:22
point now uh he had two sons actually he

had another one that we're not going to

discuss because he doesn't play into uh

this picture but he has the older son

than that but he's not playing a part in

this socus ivth who now becomes a king

and he also has a younger son Antiochus

hostage that's Antiochus IV he he's been

a hostage in Rome and actually he's um
00:16:51
One account talks about him being uh
00:16:53
escaping I don't think he escaped I

think uh he's just released but he's
00:16:57
going to be coming back uh in just a bit

and and he's going to play a key part
00:17:01
meanwhile that money is still an issue
00:17:04
and um there's a captain of the guard
00:17:07
that has a quarrel with the high priest
00:17:11
uh captain of the guard in Jerusalem a
00:17:13
Jewish Jewish captain of the Guard uh
00:17:15
named
00:17:16
Simon and um he gets fired from his job
00:17:19
and he's very upset and and he goes and
00:17:21
reports to uh some of the underlings of
00:17:24
sucus I 4th that the temple is just
00:17:28
packed with money now there is money in
00:17:31
the temple but not as much as is being
00:17:33
reported and so
00:17:35
socus remember he needs the money and so
00:17:38
he's going to send his uh one of his
00:17:40
right-hand men uh
00:17:42
heliodorus uh to confiscate money from
00:17:45
the temple in Jerusalem and heliodorus
00:17:48
uh it now we read about this story this
00:17:51
is in second mccabes there's two two
00:17:54
actually there's four books of
00:17:55
mccabes um and they're not they're not
00:17:58
part I don't believe they're part of the
00:18:00
Canon the Jewish people did not rec
00:18:01
recognize them in scripture although the
00:18:05
um the uh church both in Rome and also
00:18:09
even the orth the Orthodox Church uh
00:18:11
look at least some of those books as
00:18:13
being canonical I don't but I think they
00:18:15
are good history uh and so second
00:18:18
mccabes chapter 3 tells the story that

heliodorus was sent to confiscate the
00:18:23
wealth and he goes and he meets with the
00:18:25
the high priest in Jerusalem and he says

I'm going to take your money and high
00:18:29
priest says well there's not that much
00:18:31
um well I'm going to take it anyway uh
00:18:33
please don't you know that you're you're
00:18:35
insulting god um and so the people in
00:18:38
Judah
00:18:39
pray and the story is told that
00:18:43
heliodorus he goes into now he's not
00:18:46
going into the holy of holies that's not
00:18:48
where the money is kept but he goes into
00:18:49
the temple treasury to confiscate the
00:18:52
the money and he has a
00:18:55
vision that's just overwhelming of of
00:18:59
angels and horses and I'm not sure all
00:19:02
the details um but this vision and he is
00:19:05
just it's a little bit like uh Paul or
00:19:09
Saul as we called him uh on the Damascus
00:19:12
Road where now he's not struck blind but
00:19:15
he's struck down and he just collapses
00:19:17
and he's uh and his guards go to the
00:19:22
priest and they say uh well what do you
00:19:24
do to him you know you know like will
00:19:26
you pray for him will you fix him and um
00:19:30
and the high according to the story the
00:19:32
high priest says we're going to pray for
00:19:34
him and they do and and he gets better
00:19:37
and he leaves he goes back to ccas i 4
00:19:40
without the money because he's too
00:19:42
scared now to take it now and he goes
00:19:45
back and sucas IV is
00:19:50
assassinated and the accounts say that
00:19:52
it's hel adoris that does the
00:19:54
assassination it's like am I going to
00:19:56
face God or am I going to face my angry
00:19:58
King wants the money um and so he
00:20:01
chooses to face his or not to face his
00:20:04
King but he he chooses to assassinate
00:20:06
him so sucus I fourth is now killed and
00:20:10
that will leave anteus ivth who comes
00:20:13
back now to to um to take his brother's
00:20:17
place actually he comes back saying I'm
00:20:19
just going to be the Regent for for the
00:20:20
son of ccas forth that's not going to
00:20:22
last uh he'll he'll have the son killed
00:20:24
and then he will now Reign and you think
00:20:27
okay the temple has been delivered but
00:20:30
actually someone even
00:20:32
worse has come on the scene and troubles
00:20:36
have only begun to rise but we'll see
