Spongebob Squarepants: Skin Theory
الملخص
TLDRThis video explores an intriguing theory in the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, known as "skin theory." This theory suggests that a surprisingly large number of instances occur where characters remove their skin, wear disguises, use fake body parts, or reveal human-like features. These occurrences are far more frequent in SpongeBob than in other children's shows, particularly concentrated in the first four seasons. The video delves into this pattern, proposing it might symbolize aspects of identity and societal norms. It presents multiple sub-theories, including ritualistic behavior, mass psychosis, and the possibility of the characters being humans in disguise. By examining various clips and thematic elements, the video offers a compelling analysis of how this peculiar storyline might have originated from the creative minds behind SpongeBob, especially its creator, Stephen Hillenburg.

- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The video begins with an introduction to the Skin Theory related to the popular cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants". The introduction suggests looking for a common theme among clips, which subtly reference costumes or hidden identities, hinting at what will be discussed in-depth later.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Skin Theory is introduced as a concept where characters frequently change appearances by wearing costumes or exposing human-like features. This theory proposes that these acts are more prevalent in "SpongeBob SquarePants" than in other cartoons, leading to an exploration of related principles and examples.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The theory is built on several principles: the analogical nature of Bikini Bottom to human society, the hidden truth from viewers rather than characters, the intentionality behind it from creators, and the evolving nature of various interpretations. These principles set the groundwork for further exploration into the show's unconventional elements.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
An episode is highlighted where Squidward wears a salmon suit, posing as a disturbing element due to the societal norms of Bikini Bottom being parallel to human society. This example is used to illustrate the bizarre realities depicted in "SpongeBob SquarePants" under Skin Theory.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
Additional examples from the show are analyzed, illustrating moments such as characters wearing each other’s skin, transformations, and the extreme acceptance of these acts in Bikini Bottom. It suggests that these instances are numerous and not randomly inserted but serve a broader illustrative purpose within the theory.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
The video posits that moments of removing or wearing skin are often convenient plot devices in the show, which when accumulated, pose an irregularly high occurrence compared to other children's shows. These instances, from identity switches to exaggerated body parts, contribute further to the Skin Theory discussion.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The show is correlated with cultural rituals involving costumes and transformative masks, suggesting that Bikini Bottom might be engaging in complex social rituals similar to various human societies throughout history. These rituals could be linked to deity worship or maintaining societal norms.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The explanation of Skin Theory continues by exploring it as a mass psychosis affecting the society of Bikini Bottom, suggesting that such behaviors might stem from group insanity triggered by a significant event. This proposal looks at historical precedents of mass psychosis to substantiate its application within the show.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
The "Costumed Human Hypothesis" is introduced, positing that the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom are humans in disguise, performing a distorted version of underwater life. This theory attempts to answer miscellaneous inconsistencies by suggesting everything occurs on dry land.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
This segment discusses everyday logical inconsistencies in the show, like fire and gravity underwater, and how they could be explained by the "Costumed Human Hypothesis," claiming they are dry-land performances rather than genuine underwater occurrences.
- 00:50:00 - 00:55:00
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are cited as evidence supporting the theory that Bikini Bottom's characters are humans in costumes. These superheroes are literal exemplifications of costumed humans in a world where disguises appear to be the norm.
- 00:55:00 - 01:00:00
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of "SpongeBob SquarePants," is acknowledged as potentially responsible for embedding Skin Theory into the show's earlier seasons. The alignment of his tenure and the presence of Skin Theory instances suggests his possible influence in injecting such deeper meanings.
- 01:00:00 - 01:05:00
With a focus on the artistic and narrative depth of "SpongeBob SquarePants," the video acknowledges the creativity and complexity possible in the series, discussing how interpretations like Skin Theory add richness to what is ostensibly a children's show. Viewers are encouraged to appreciate this complexity, irrespective of whether they subscribe to the theory.
- 01:05:00 - 01:11:31
The conclusion draws attention to Stephen Hillenburg's legacy, celebrating "SpongeBob SquarePants" as a significant creative endeavor that bridges age divides and offers rich interpretive potential. It acknowledges the show as a cultural artifact, encouraging discussions and personal interpretations without demanding adherence to any single theory.

- 00:01:29but but you're supposed to be in a
- 00:01:31gorilla suit I'm in the gorilla suit I

- 00:01:47[Music]
- 00:01:50so anything stand out let's take a
- 00:01:53closer look I thought I was doing a
- 00:02:04pretty good job Patrick might strike he
- 00:02:12was a little weird that not one and not
- 00:02:14two but all three of these clips have
- 00:02:17specific references to fish who are
- 00:02:19wearing costumes or some kind of skin
- 00:02:22but this must be a coincidence
- 00:02:24right wrong and these aren't even a
- 00:02:27fraction of the clips that you are about
- 00:02:30to see welcome so skin theory now before
- 00:02:42we get rolling a quick overview first
- 00:02:45we'll explain the basics of skin theory
- 00:02:47and define it next an in-depth analysis
- 00:02:49of one very important moment from the
- 00:02:51show after that you'll see every single
- 00:02:54example of skin theory currently known
- 00:02:56to exist then the various
- 00:02:58interpretations of skin theory will be
- 00:02:59discussed and we'll try to answer some
- 00:03:01of the biggest questions concerning what
- 00:03:03it all means and finally we'll look at
- 00:03:05the creative minds behind Sponge Bob who
- 00:03:08could have had a hand in creating skin
- 00:03:09theory as well as one man in particular
- 00:03:11who might be responsible for at all
- 00:03:13followed by some closing thoughts now
- 00:03:17let's begin
- 00:03:21[Music]
- 00:03:23skin theory can be summarized with one
- 00:03:26basic definition and for supporting
- 00:03:28principles the basic definition is all
- 00:03:30of this you can read the official
- 00:03:33definition here but basically what this
- 00:03:34is all getting at is just one simple
- 00:03:36idea and the idea is this within the
- 00:03:39show SpongeBob SquarePants there are a
- 00:03:41shockingly high amount of these bizarre
- 00:03:44moments where some character will take
- 00:03:47off their skin or put on someone else's
- 00:03:50skin or use fake body parts or dress up
- 00:03:53like different types of fish or reveal
- 00:03:55human features underneath their fishy
- 00:03:58exterior in simplest terms that is skin
- 00:04:01theory but the key here is that these
- 00:04:02moments are in
- 00:04:03incredibly common way more common in
- 00:04:06fact than any other children's cartoon
- 00:04:08show and that brings us to the first
- 00:04:10principle skin theory is based on the
- 00:04:12analogical nature of human society
- 00:04:15compared to what can be observed in
- 00:04:17Bikini Bottom or in other words the
- 00:04:19inconsistency of basic societal norms in
- 00:04:21Bikini Bottom are deeply disturbing as
- 00:04:24for the second skin theory is not hidden
- 00:04:27from the characters in Spongebob it is
- 00:04:29hidden from the viewer so essentially
- 00:04:31all the sea creatures in Bikini Bottom
- 00:04:33are aware of this skin wearing and they
- 00:04:37recognize it as normal acceptable
- 00:04:39behavior on to the next principal skin
- 00:04:42theory is propagated by extra-textual
- 00:04:44forces meaning skin theory isn't just a
- 00:04:47weird quirk that formed naturally or
- 00:04:49accidentally but rather it was
- 00:04:51intentionally injected into the show by
- 00:04:54the writers producers and showrunners
- 00:04:56who worked on it also notice that the
- 00:04:58reference is the skin theory are densely
- 00:05:00concentrated within seasons one through
- 00:05:02four but they rarely appear in seasons
- 00:05:04after that and there is an explanation
- 00:05:06for why which we'll get to later anyway
- 00:05:09the fourth principal skin theory is a
- 00:05:11multi-faceted work in progress
- 00:05:14so there isn't just one official
- 00:05:15interpretation but rather there are
- 00:05:17multiple sub theories out there this
- 00:05:20includes the ritual aspect the mass
- 00:05:22psychosis elements and the costumed
- 00:05:25human hypothesis and yes those do sound
- 00:05:28completely insane but later on in the
- 00:05:30video we're gonna go into detail
- 00:05:31regarding all three okay what's next so
- 00:05:35at this point in the video you might be
- 00:05:36thinking this idea is ridiculous it's
- 00:05:39insane I would need to see many many
- 00:05:42solid examples before I even think about
- 00:05:44believing it and that's good
- 00:05:46skepticism is good but you're about to
- 00:05:49see those examples after all the three
- 00:05:51clips you saw at the beginning are only
- 00:05:53the tip of the iceberg on a couple
- 00:06:00if you want arms like alright alright
- 00:06:05let's not get ahead of ourselves before
- 00:06:07we can truly appreciate what's going on
- 00:06:09here we need to firmly grasp the first
- 00:06:12principle here it is again
- 00:06:14now this analogy isn't really something
- 00:06:16we think about when we watch the show
- 00:06:18but it's always there and it's very
- 00:06:20important there are a whole bunch of
- 00:06:21examples I can illustrate this point but
- 00:06:24one in particular stands out as
- 00:06:25especially striking specific and deeply
- 00:06:29disturbing everybody remembers dying for
- 00:06:36pie it's an all-time classic episode
- 00:06:38from season two personally I think this
- 00:06:41is one of the best spongebob episodes
- 00:06:42ever written right up there next to band
- 00:06:45geeks and chocolate with nuts it's got
- 00:06:47tons of witty dialogue in iconic moments
- 00:06:50but you might not even realize that it
- 00:06:51also has one of the most disturbing
- 00:06:53moments in cartoon history
- 00:06:59but anyway the scene we're talking about
- 00:07:01occurs while Squidward is attempting to
- 00:07:03help spongebob complete a list of
- 00:07:05funding activities everyone in town
- 00:07:35wearing a suit you're gonna be wearing a
- 00:07:38salmon suit so the scene might have
- 00:07:46struck you as a little strange when you
- 00:07:47first watched it but in reality it
- 00:07:49should strike you as downright
- 00:07:51horrifying and here's why
- 00:07:54SpongeBob SquarePants is a show about
- 00:07:56fish and undersea creatures no surprise
- 00:07:59there but these aren't real fish their
- 00:08:01interpretations of fish and in these
- 00:08:04particular interpretations they're meant
- 00:08:06to serve as parallels to human beings
- 00:08:08after all if it was accurate to how sea
- 00:08:10creatures actually looked and behaved
- 00:08:12the show would look something like this
- 00:08:24riveting so anyway in order for the show
- 00:08:27to work bikini bottom needs to be a
- 00:08:29nearly perfect parallel of human society
- 00:08:32for instance we see things like boat
- 00:08:34Mobile's shell phones and Krabby Patties
- 00:08:36and our mind immediately jumps to the
- 00:08:38real world parallel that these objects
- 00:08:40are clearly referring to in this case
- 00:08:42it's a car a cell phone and a hamburger
- 00:08:44but the same premise applies to broader
- 00:08:47concepts about society as well for
- 00:08:49instance just like how our society runs
- 00:08:51on a currency system where people
- 00:08:53exchange cash and work jobs to earn
- 00:08:55money the same is true in bikini bottom
- 00:08:57and just like how our society employs a
- 00:09:00criminal justice system the same is true
- 00:09:02in bikini bottom and lastly our society
- 00:09:05uses relatable humor as a form of
- 00:09:07leisure and so does bikini bottom
- 00:09:09for example if someone does something
- 00:09:11funny in bikini bottom that same action
- 00:09:13should be equally funny if it were to
- 00:09:15occur in human society and from this it
- 00:09:18also follows that unacceptable behavior
- 00:09:20in bikini bottom would be considered
- 00:09:22unacceptable behavior in human society
- 00:09:24so far this should all just be common
- 00:09:26sense and this is where things get
- 00:09:28disturbing salmon is a type of fish
- 00:09:35now to us fish are just fish you know
- 00:09:39simple animals who are caught and eaten
- 00:09:41every day no big deal
- 00:09:43but to the citizens of Bikini Bottom
- 00:09:44fish are people fish are their friends
- 00:09:48their neighbors their family fish are
- 00:09:50literally everywhere they look so when
- 00:09:54Squidward puts on this horrifying suit
- 00:09:56of a salmon the kids aren't just seeing
- 00:09:58a funny pink costume they're seeing a
- 00:10:01complete stranger walk up to them
- 00:10:03wearing the naked skin of someone they
- 00:10:07probably know I mean this kid even looks
- 00:10:09like a salmon what if he is a salmon
- 00:10:11what if his whole family is a bunch of
- 00:10:13salmon think about how disturbing that
- 00:10:15would be for him this costume is not
- 00:10:18okay
- 00:10:19it's beyond messed up to think that
- 00:10:21Squidward would actually do this let me
- 00:10:25put this another way what would you do
- 00:10:26if you and your friends were walking in
- 00:10:28a park one day just minding your own
- 00:10:30business when suddenly a stranger comes
- 00:10:32up out of nowhere and Oh what do you
- 00:10:33know he's literally wearing the loose
- 00:10:35severed skin of a naked human being are
- 00:10:39you kidding me and what if he tried to
- 00:10:42talk to you that's probably why they're
- 00:10:44throwing rocks Squidward looks like he
- 00:10:47just murdered somebody seriously this is
- 00:10:49like Silence of the Lambs but worse this
- 00:10:52is supposed to be a kids show oh but
- 00:10:55wait that's not even as bad as it gets
- 00:10:57because this isn't actually what a
- 00:11:00salmon looks like and I'm not talking
- 00:11:03about the animation style I'm talking
- 00:11:05about the color now I know most of you
- 00:11:07have probably eaten salmon before and
- 00:11:09yes it's always been in this kind of off
- 00:11:11pink color but really think about that
- 00:11:14for a second that's how it looks on your
- 00:11:16plate after it's been cleaned filleted
- 00:11:19and cooked so on the inside yes salmon
- 00:11:23meat is pink but what about the outside
- 00:11:25what do real salmon look like salmon who
- 00:11:28are actually alive
- 00:11:30[Music]
- 00:11:36gray they look gray in reality you need
- 00:11:42to cut the skin off before any pink
- 00:11:44parts even begin to show which means
- 00:11:47Squidward salmon suit isn't only the
- 00:11:50naked hideously deformed representation
- 00:11:53of a sentient member of Bikini Bottom
- 00:11:54Society it's also supposed to be a
- 00:11:57salmon that has had all of its outer
- 00:11:59skin sliced off holy Sh hopefully now
- 00:12:07you're beginning to see how some of the
- 00:12:09most harmless moments from SpongeBob
- 00:12:11SquarePants can completely collapse in
- 00:12:13the blink of an eye so the salmon suit
- 00:12:21is a great moment to analyze but it's
- 00:12:23only one instance and one instance isn't
- 00:12:26enough to support an entire theory
- 00:12:28that's why i've compiled dozens of
- 00:12:29unique moments all pulled from a variety
- 00:12:31of episodes which you are about to see
- 00:12:34but before that just keep a few things
- 00:12:36in mind first all the clips you're about
- 00:12:38to see have been taken from seasons 1 2
- 00:12:403 & 4 and as you might know SpongeBob
- 00:12:43SquarePants is currently on its 12th
- 00:12:45season this will be explored later
- 00:12:46secondly you're about to see a ton of
- 00:12:48clips but it's very possible that even
- 00:12:50more exists out there which have yet to
- 00:12:52be discovered
- 00:12:53third the criteria for what makes
- 00:12:54something in instance of skin theory is
- 00:12:57intentionally open-ended each one is
- 00:12:59going to be different from the last and
- 00:13:01lastly as you watch try not to think of
- 00:13:03these as individual moments that exist
- 00:13:05on their own but rather as connected
- 00:13:07pieces that all appear in the context of
- 00:13:09one another
- 00:13:10becoming more significant when
- 00:13:12considered as a whole
- 00:13:15okay here we go I can't go anywhere ever
- 00:13:22again
- 00:13:27[Music]
- 00:13:41my point so right off the bat we got
- 00:13:44Sponge Bob climbing into mr. Krabs his
- 00:13:46body and this scene might be humorous
- 00:13:48when viewed on its own but when you
- 00:13:49watch the episode again with skin theory
- 00:13:51in mind kind of changes this reference
- 00:13:54is about as cut and dry as it gets I
- 00:13:56mean he literally wears mr. Krabs but
- 00:13:58believe it or not this isn't the only
- 00:14:00time that mr. Krabs and SpongeBob have
- 00:14:02switched bodies mr. Krabs some guy in a
- 00:14:09suit wants to come in before we open
- 00:14:11what guy in a suit he's got a card ra
- 00:14:23penny-pincher vending supplies what they
- 00:14:30also do it in the episode skill crane
- 00:14:32although this time the roles are
- 00:14:34reversed next we have a moment that
- 00:14:36comes from one of SpongeBob's all-time
- 00:14:38classics no weenies allowed
- 00:14:42I had a bull and nails for breakfast
- 00:14:44this morning yes so well any nail right
- 00:14:50this way
- 00:14:51sorry to keep you waiting welcome to the
- 00:14:53salty spitoon how tough are you anymore
- 00:15:03crack is the deeper we go here the more
- 00:15:05examples you're gonna see where one
- 00:15:07character has parts of their skin ripped
- 00:15:09off and then reapplied as if nothing
- 00:15:11happened
- 00:15:12granted if there were only a handful of
- 00:15:14these weird moments throughout the show
- 00:15:15they probably wouldn't be worth
- 00:15:17mentioning but as you'll see there are
- 00:15:18just way too many of them to ignore for
- 00:15:21example no spongebob I got fired too
- 00:15:37he's exactly why we need to go on strike
- 00:15:41he can't treat us like this anymore
- 00:15:44and another one
- 00:15:56[Music]
- 00:15:57and another one
- 00:16:05hi I am very ugly but you should enjoy
- 00:16:09the movie anyway so how much that
- 00:16:15woman's face do you actually think was
- 00:16:16real hopefully none of it because if it
- 00:16:19was real then apparently we just saw
- 00:16:21Sponge Bob give a complete stranger
- 00:16:22third-degree burns
- 00:16:24now that's brutal not Monsieur Krabs
- 00:16:41poets so Sponge Bob rips off all his
- 00:16:47skin to reveal another identical looking
- 00:16:50spongebob underneath so this immediately
- 00:16:54raises two questions first why and
- 00:16:58second how can we know that this second
- 00:17:01version of spongebob isn't actually just
- 00:17:03another layer of skin what if he's
- 00:17:05wearing three of those costumes what if
- 00:17:07he's wearing four what if every single
- 00:17:09time we ever see spongebob he's actually
- 00:17:11just wearing this costume and in reality
- 00:17:13he doesn't even look like this at all I
- 00:17:15mean there could be anything underneath
- 00:17:17there what are you talking about puff
- 00:17:26you can't fool me
- 00:17:28you're Spongebob and that guy who likes
- 00:17:29the chili continuing with the theme of
- 00:17:33tearing someone's skin off this scene is
- 00:17:35actually pretty shocking if you're not
- 00:17:37familiar with the episode you might be
- 00:17:38wondering what could have possibly
- 00:17:39caused the peaceful mrs. puff to act in
- 00:17:42such a violent way well if we just
- 00:17:44rewind the clip a few seconds you'll see
- 00:17:46exactly why right that's why because
- 00:18:01SpongeBob and Patrick literally walked
- 00:18:03right past her moments ago wearing full
- 00:18:05body skin costumes of prison guards also
- 00:18:09how did spongebob and patrick change
- 00:18:10their voices so well
- 00:18:15this next example is one of my favorites
- 00:18:18partly because of how much it made me
- 00:18:20laugh as a kid and also partly because
- 00:18:22of how ridiculously absurd it all seems
- 00:18:25now I wonder what's in that secret
- 00:18:31formula clinics that nobody would notice
- 00:18:45when did this show become scooby-doo
- 00:18:49this is the end of the mystery if it
- 00:18:53isn't our old friend blue stone the
- 00:18:54break
- 00:18:55seriously this moment is so abrupt and
- 00:18:58absurd it leaves me dumbfounded I mean I
- 00:19:00love it I think it's hilarious but it
- 00:19:03leaves me dumbfounded let's consider the
- 00:19:05language he uses here in clinics that
- 00:19:10nobody would notice the head enhancement
- 00:19:13clinic really the head enhancement
- 00:19:16clinic wouldn't it have been easier for
- 00:19:19him to have just said the costume store
- 00:19:21or the mask shop no for some reason the
- 00:19:24writers decided that he would
- 00:19:25specifically reference something called
- 00:19:27the head enhancement clinic which is
- 00:19:30apparently a real place that exists
- 00:19:32somewhere in bikini bottom that's insane
- 00:19:35so you're telling me the body
- 00:19:36modification at a surgical level is so
- 00:19:39common for undersea creatures and
- 00:19:41SpongeBob SquarePants that they actually
- 00:19:42have a fully dedicated standalone
- 00:19:45medical clinic for handling it really
- 00:19:48but even then it's not a full body
- 00:19:50modification clinic it's specifically a
- 00:19:53head enhancement clinic so they only
- 00:19:56deal with heads what about all the other
- 00:19:58body parts doesn't this imply that there
- 00:20:00must be other clinics out there too
- 00:20:02which catered things like hands feet
- 00:20:04torsos etc it does and there's proof for
- 00:20:08that too just look at this guy again he
- 00:20:10has to have visited at least a few of
- 00:20:12those other clinics too because the
- 00:20:14color of his arms is totally different
- 00:20:16from the color of his actual skin they
- 00:20:19aren't even close so not only is the
- 00:20:21head fake but so is his entire body how
- 00:20:25many surgeries do you think this guy's
- 00:20:26had
- 00:20:27how many clinics do you think bikini
- 00:20:29bottom has weight did you catch that
- 00:20:48look at this nose shop do they seriously
- 00:20:51sell severed human noses I mean these
- 00:20:54things aren't even fish noses they
- 00:20:56clearly belong on a human being so why
- 00:20:58does this shop exist and notice how the
- 00:21:01show only stays on this image for a
- 00:21:03fraction of a second that's incredibly
- 00:21:05quick maybe they're flashing it by you
- 00:21:07so fast because if they linger on it and
- 00:21:09the audience really gets to think about
- 00:21:11what they're seeing people will start
- 00:21:13asking questions
- 00:21:34speaking of shops that sell body parts
- 00:21:36Sponge Bob was able to find a fake
- 00:21:38tongue that not only looks and feels
- 00:21:40real but is apparently functional enough
- 00:21:42to allow him to speak perfectly wallets
- 00:21:44in his mouth nice since high school
- 00:21:56squiddy don't be intimidated Squidward
- 00:21:58try to imagine here man in his underwear
- 00:22:00[Music]
- 00:22:03wait this is what squilliam looks like
- 00:22:06in his underwear he has a muscled human
- 00:22:10torso with fingers
- 00:22:15I was born with glass bones and paper
- 00:22:17skin every morning I break my legs and
- 00:22:20every afternoon I break my arms at night
- 00:22:22I lie awake in agony until my heart
- 00:22:24attacks put me to sleep
- 00:22:25Oh quick let's help him careful
- 00:22:36put him down gently poor poor man if
- 00:22:41there's anything anything we can do to
- 00:22:44help you
- 00:22:44there is one thing yes you can well
- 00:22:47imagine my medical bills are extremely
- 00:22:49high but luckily I'm able to keep myself
- 00:22:51alive by selling chocolate bars such
- 00:22:58nice boys it does my heart good to con a
- 00:23:01couple of class-a suckers like those two
- 00:23:05[Music]
- 00:23:06so here's my first question if he's
- 00:23:09gonna cover up his whole body for this
- 00:23:10bandage disguise why doesn't he just use
- 00:23:13actual bandages and just wrap that
- 00:23:15around his body that would look way more
- 00:23:16convincing and it would probably be a
- 00:23:18hell of a lot cheaper and easier to find
- 00:23:20but no for some reason this guy just
- 00:23:22happens to own a full-body suit that
- 00:23:25includes among other things functioning
- 00:23:27eyeballs so there are a lot of absurd
- 00:23:33moments in spongebob squarepants where
- 00:23:35the show seems to really take a serious
- 00:23:37dive off the deep end and usually those
- 00:23:39moments are hilarious but every fan will
- 00:23:41agree that one of the most absurd
- 00:23:43moments of all time has to be the final
- 00:23:46two minutes from I had an accident in
- 00:23:48season 3 towards the end of the episode
- 00:23:50sandy and Patrick hatched a ridiculous
- 00:23:53plan stupid somewhere else before to
- 00:23:56lure spongebob out of his house by
- 00:23:58getting Patrick to pose as a violent
- 00:24:01gorilla who's your friend
- 00:24:08but but you're supposed to be in the
- 00:24:10gorilla suit I'm in the gorilla suit I
- 00:24:13thought I was doing a pretty good job if
- 00:24:16you're Patrick
- 00:24:20[Music]
- 00:24:25[Music]
- 00:24:28man there are a lot more zipper suits in
- 00:24:31this show than I remember
- 00:24:32where's every buying them and how did
- 00:24:34the gorilla get one that looks exactly
- 00:24:36like Patrick I mean I can understand
- 00:24:39Patrick's gorilla suit because hey even
- 00:24:41people in humans decide you want to
- 00:24:42dress up like a gorilla sometimes
- 00:24:43there's nothing wrong with that but
- 00:24:45Patrick a full body costume of Patrick
- 00:24:48Starr why does this suit exist is there
- 00:24:52a store somewhere that sells exact
- 00:24:54replica skins of every single citizen of
- 00:24:57Bikini Bottom that anybody can rent out
- 00:24:59anytime they like honestly that would
- 00:25:02explain a lot
- 00:25:03Oh God and don't even get me started on
- 00:25:06the real gorilla I can't even imagine
- 00:25:08how they came up with this idea in the
- 00:25:10writers room they convinced a real
- 00:25:12person to put on a full-body gorilla
- 00:25:14suit and then shoot him in live-action
- 00:25:16with voiceover dub you have to be insane
- 00:25:20to even think of this stuff and the
- 00:25:23immediate logical question that comes up
- 00:25:24is actually exactly what spongebob says
- 00:25:27next you know what I don't understand
- 00:25:29though what what's a gorilla doing
- 00:25:33underwater in the first place I mean
- 00:25:38George they're Aguas let's get out of
- 00:25:41here
- 00:25:46[Music]
- 00:25:54[Applause]
- 00:25:54[Music]
- 00:25:56sidenote the voice for the gorilla in
- 00:25:58this episode is actually renowned voice
- 00:26:00actor Frank Welker if that name doesn't
- 00:26:03sound familiar don't worry you
- 00:26:05definitely know him in fact you've
- 00:26:07already heard his voice in this exact
- 00:26:09video that's right Fred well I'd say
- 00:26:22check on him if it were for the fact
- 00:26:23that we were warned to stay in our rooms
- 00:26:25Frank Welker has been the voice of Fred
- 00:26:28Jones in nearly every single animated
- 00:26:30version of scooby-doo since 1969 so the
- 00:26:33guy who is constantly pulling weird
- 00:26:35masks off of costume monsters is
- 00:26:37actually the voice of the costumed
- 00:26:39monster this might be the single
- 00:26:41greatest stroke of irony that has ever
- 00:26:43been written would it be too crazy to
- 00:26:49think that this might be the writers way
- 00:26:51of hinting at skin theory
- 00:26:52perhaps anyway forget the gorilla what
- 00:26:55is a horse doing underwater you don't be
- 00:26:58crazy
- 00:26:58what if the voice actor for George the
- 00:27:01horse was also somehow related to skin
- 00:27:03theory now that would be cool but
- 00:27:05there's no way that the writers would
- 00:27:07have added two insanely deep ironic
- 00:27:09references right wrong of course they
- 00:27:14did of course they did George the horse
- 00:27:17is voiced by none other than Dee Bradley
- 00:27:19Baker another renowned voice actor who
- 00:27:22is known for among other things
- 00:27:24portraying one particular role on
- 00:27:26American Dad hey I have an idea you
- 00:27:30could put my brain back into a human
- 00:27:31body and I could get a job and earn some
- 00:27:33money for the family Klaus the talking
- 00:27:36fish the talking fish are you kidding me
- 00:27:44first it's Fred and now it's Klaus in
- 00:27:46the same scene how many levels of irony
- 00:27:50were these writers on when they made
- 00:27:52this episode seriously this is the kind
- 00:27:54of thing you should point to when people
- 00:27:55say it's just a kids show there are no
- 00:27:58double meanings or deep messages these
- 00:28:00meta references are real and they were
- 00:28:02light years ahead of their time these
- 00:28:04writers might very well have been
- 00:28:06clinically insane
- 00:28:07they were geniuses and what happens when
- 00:28:10you combine genius writers with
- 00:28:12metatextual references and pure insanity
- 00:28:15skin theory your teachings have
- 00:28:28transformed besides man writes takes off
- 00:28:40his head and walks away okay I guess he
- 00:28:43could get a pass here because he's
- 00:28:44supposed to be some kind of mutated
- 00:28:46supervillain fine whatever
- 00:28:47sure but Patrick isn't my crown
- 00:28:59something patrick in this episode the
- 00:29:05entire upper section of his head is
- 00:29:07removed at least twice and then replaced
- 00:29:10with various non-biological pieces no
- 00:29:12problem
- 00:29:13compared to other kids shows these kinds
- 00:29:16of moments are unusually frequent
- 00:29:22[Music]
- 00:29:27[Music]
- 00:29:29[Laughter]
- 00:29:32[Music]
- 00:29:36first of all that's a fantastic pun
- 00:29:39quality stuff second these moments are
- 00:29:41strange on their own but something else
- 00:29:43to notice is how everyone else in the
- 00:29:44show is just totally unfazed when they
- 00:29:46see this stuff happening like the -
- 00:29:48squids don't even react they just had
- 00:29:50the features of their faces sucked
- 00:29:52cleanly off and then reattached to
- 00:29:54somebody different is this just a
- 00:29:56regular occurrence for them is this just
- 00:29:58something people do to each other down
- 00:30:00here I mean if everyone is wearing skins
- 00:30:02and everybody knows that everybody else
- 00:30:04is wearing skins why not well it's all
- 00:30:12your fault it's all because of me I'm
- 00:30:17such a barnacle head poor mrs. puff I
- 00:30:20know I gotta get her out but to get her
- 00:30:23out of jail first we gotta get in jail
- 00:30:25how we gonna do that I can't be the only
- 00:30:28one who thought those dogs were a part
- 00:30:29of his body but apparently not maybe
- 00:30:32they have velcro on the back and if you
- 00:30:34can do that to one of his dots doesn't
- 00:30:35that mean he do it to all of them you
- 00:30:42mean I'm awake
- 00:30:45[Music]
- 00:30:51mr. Krabs rips his entire head in half
- 00:30:54and then reforms it multiple times just
- 00:30:56pause for a second and try to imagine
- 00:30:58this scene occurring and pretty much any
- 00:31:00other children's cartoon show from the
- 00:31:02era can you imagine how disgusting this
- 00:31:04would look if timmy turner just ripped
- 00:31:06his face off in the middle of an episode
- 00:31:08of Fairly OddParents that kind of
- 00:31:10imagery does not fly but spongebob gets
- 00:31:12away with it
- 00:31:16[Music]
- 00:31:19[Applause]
- 00:31:28[Music]
- 00:31:33I can explain this one obviously isn't
- 00:31:42that serious of an example but it does
- 00:31:43illustrate something weird the fish here
- 00:31:46seem to be constantly wearing full-body
- 00:31:47costumes underneath their regular
- 00:31:49clothes even when they're skiing that's
- 00:31:51a little weird all right mrs. puff it
- 00:32:00looks like this heats gone to your head
- 00:32:01if you're gonna talk to rocks I guess
- 00:32:03it's time for you to go on kitchen duty
- 00:32:14oh so there is a store somewhere in
- 00:32:18bikini bottom that lets people rent out
- 00:32:20various costumes which are modeled after
- 00:32:22other citizens where else could
- 00:32:24SpongeBob and Patrick I've gotten these
- 00:32:25rock costumes that perfectly match their
- 00:32:28individual skin tones this is probably
- 00:32:30also where that con man got his bandaged
- 00:32:32costume and where that gorilla got his
- 00:32:34Patrick costume so you've seen a lot of
- 00:32:36clips so far but if you still think that
- 00:32:38these are just totally normal everyday
- 00:32:41coincidences that you'd find in any old
- 00:32:42TV show what will it take what will it
- 00:32:46take to convince you that maybe
- 00:32:47something weird is going on here
- 00:32:49perhaps these small isolated examples
- 00:32:52just aren't enough and you're looking
- 00:32:54for something singular and concrete
- 00:32:55something solidly connected to the
- 00:32:57actual plot that would be nice but
- 00:33:00surely there aren't any examples of that
- 00:33:02right wrong now this is a top tier
- 00:33:07episode of Spongebob it's got some of
- 00:33:09the best one-liners and visual gags in
- 00:33:12the history of spongebob but it also has
- 00:33:14complicated and nuanced intellectual
- 00:33:16humor like as a side note this isn't the
- 00:33:24only time pinhead Patrick makes an
- 00:33:26appearance there's also this scene from
- 00:33:28the doodlebop episode
- 00:33:30[Music]
- 00:33:38okay I'm about to go on a tangent so
- 00:33:40let's bring it back on topic survival of
- 00:33:42the idiots there are a couple small
- 00:33:44instances of skin theory in this episode
- 00:33:46such as this and this but there are some
- 00:33:58big ones too the main conflict is pretty
- 00:34:00simple so unwelcome Patrick are trapped
- 00:34:02inside the tree dome during winter and
- 00:34:03they need to find a way to get warm now
- 00:34:06there are plenty of ways that they could
- 00:34:07have solved this problem well what did
- 00:34:09they end up doing that's right they
- 00:34:11decided to rip all of Sandy's fur off
- 00:34:13her body and wear it skin theory but
- 00:34:18wait there's more do you remember how
- 00:34:19the episode actually ends I'm talking
- 00:34:21about the final 10 seconds or so the
- 00:34:23very last joke of the episode true
- 00:34:26spongebob fans will remember this one
- 00:34:36[Music]
- 00:34:43she wears them she actually wears them
- 00:34:47that's wild
- 00:34:48why does this show have so many
- 00:34:50references to fish that are wearing
- 00:34:52other fish oh and that wasn't even the
- 00:34:55final example by the way not even close
- 00:34:58there are a bunch more and lucky for us
- 00:35:00I saved some of the best and most
- 00:35:02bizarre moments for last
- 00:35:06some people are even late on Sunday I
- 00:35:19don't think I mean to say anything about
- 00:35:22this I mean justjust look at it the more
- 00:35:24times you watch it the less sense it
- 00:35:26makes it says absolutely nothing to do
- 00:35:28with the plot and even when you consider
- 00:35:30it on its own it's not even really that
- 00:35:32humorous it's just weird it's just kind
- 00:35:35of there I mean I guess it's a little
- 00:35:36funny mainly because of how random it is
- 00:35:38but even then the show just kind of hits
- 00:35:40you with it out of nowhere and then
- 00:35:42quickly moves on to something else it
- 00:35:44doesn't get much more bizarre than that
- 00:35:45oh but it does it always does this whole
- 00:35:51episode is just weird
- 00:35:53all around I remember seeing it
- 00:35:54sometimes as a kid but way more rarely
- 00:35:56than the other episodes from Season one
- 00:35:58I imagine it had something to do with
- 00:36:00this hideous mess of Sponge Bob shaped
- 00:36:02like a snail
- 00:36:07yeah that snail monster is pretty
- 00:36:09disturbing but that's not even close to
- 00:36:11how disturbing this guy is I'd be
- 00:36:14shocked if you even remember him after
- 00:36:16all he only appeared for like 30 seconds
- 00:36:17in the middle of the episode supposedly
- 00:36:19he's a pet doctor that comes to
- 00:36:21SpongeBob's house to give Gary an
- 00:36:23injection of snail plasma so you might
- 00:36:26be asking what's so bad about that
- 00:36:28well see for yourself what the hell is
- 00:36:35this what is wrong with his arms is this
- 00:36:39actually how the animators chose to draw
- 00:36:41him I I swear I did not edit this his
- 00:36:44face is clearly purple and for the most
- 00:36:46part resembles a regular fish but for
- 00:36:48some reason his arms are brown and he
- 00:36:52has fingers why why did they do this
- 00:36:56there's just no logical reason that this
- 00:36:58particular fish should get drawn with
- 00:37:00fingers unless you consider skin theory
- 00:37:03of course in which case it makes perfect
- 00:37:05sense anyway there's also the question
- 00:37:07of his arms being a completely different
- 00:37:10color from his face I mean they're even
- 00:37:11close and I'm no professional animator
- 00:37:14but there's just no way that this can be
- 00:37:16chalked up to a simple coloring mistake
- 00:37:18he's either a purple fish who's wearing
- 00:37:20brown arm covers or he's a brown fish
- 00:37:23who's wearing a purple facemask but then
- 00:37:26again what if there was a third option
- 00:37:28what if then hear me out what if he
- 00:37:31isn't a fish at all we're gonna have to
- 00:37:37come back to this later but in the
- 00:37:39meantime we've still got one more
- 00:37:40example to go so at this point you've
- 00:37:43seen over two dozen clips from different
- 00:37:45episodes of Spongebob that span four
- 00:37:47whole seasons of the show no matter how
- 00:37:50skeptical you might be you can't deny
- 00:37:52that these references are unusually
- 00:37:54frequent way above the threshold for any
- 00:37:56other children's cartoon at the time
- 00:37:58there's only one more episode I want to
- 00:38:00look at before we go into the
- 00:38:01explanations behind skin theory and this
- 00:38:03one is dedicated to the hardest of
- 00:38:05hardcore skeptics out there you might be
- 00:38:07thinking these examples are weird but at
- 00:38:10the end of the day they're only
- 00:38:11individual moments and I still need
- 00:38:13something bigger to convince me so what
- 00:38:16would it take perhaps a full episode
- 00:38:19where the entire plot revolves or
- 00:38:20fish that are wearing skins maybe but
- 00:38:24then again there is no episode like that
- 00:38:25there's no way that the writers of such
- 00:38:27a beloved children's cartoon would allow
- 00:38:30something so devious and subversive to
- 00:38:32make it on TV right right wrong oh yes
- 00:38:44Muscle ball buff pants is another
- 00:38:46classic from the early days of season
- 00:38:48one and just by picturing the episode in
- 00:38:51your head you probably know what I'm
- 00:38:53about to say two words anchor arms
- 00:38:56they're giant inflatable skin like
- 00:38:59appendages that anyone can wear
- 00:39:01seriously it doesn't get any more
- 00:39:03black-and-white than that the whole
- 00:39:04episode literally revolves around Sponge
- 00:39:07Bob wearing skin and pretending to be
- 00:39:09something that he's not and the funny
- 00:39:11part is his trick actually works the
- 00:39:13other fish totally buy it as if these
- 00:39:16enormous laughably discolored arms are
- 00:39:18somehow realistic are they actually that
- 00:39:21dumb perhaps but what if they're
- 00:39:24actually aware that Sponge Bob is using
- 00:39:26false arms and there's not saying
- 00:39:28anything because it's so normal for
- 00:39:30people in this society to see other
- 00:39:32people dressed up in skin also how do
- 00:39:35incur arms grow hair and how do they
- 00:39:37become veiny notice how he never
- 00:39:39mentions the actual material that these
- 00:39:41things are made of so what are they made
- 00:39:43of
- 00:39:43what if these things are made of actual
- 00:39:45skin at this point I wouldn't even be
- 00:39:47surprised but wait let's go back to that
- 00:39:49television commercial there's something
- 00:39:51about it that might actually be more
- 00:39:53bizarre than anything you've seen thus
- 00:39:56far I'll play the whole thing again so
- 00:39:58watch carefully and see if you can find
- 00:40:00what I'm talking about are you too much
- 00:40:14of a whip to work out are you a weakling
- 00:40:28[Music]
- 00:40:30big deal for the ladies wow did you
- 00:40:51catch it right here
- 00:40:53who is this supposed to be exactly are
- 00:40:56you telling me that this shark used to
- 00:40:59look like this how there's so many
- 00:41:02things wrong with this transformation I
- 00:41:03could make an itemized list in fact I
- 00:41:06think I will number one his skin color
- 00:41:08inexplicably changed from dark green to
- 00:41:10light gray how would Hank her arms do
- 00:41:12that second his stature and size are
- 00:41:15completely different are you telling me
- 00:41:17that anchor arms straightened out his
- 00:41:18bad posture and added 50 pounds where
- 00:41:20did those pecs and those ABS come from
- 00:41:22are they fake - if they are
- 00:41:24why aren't they the same fleshy color as
- 00:41:26the anchor arms third his eyes seemed to
- 00:41:28have mysteriously shifted on to either
- 00:41:30side of his face and his vision is
- 00:41:32perfect now no need for glasses fourth
- 00:41:35why do his teeth look like they've been
- 00:41:36filed down - points
- 00:41:38fifth and this one really really freaks
- 00:41:41me out
- 00:41:41he has fingers all of a sudden where did
- 00:41:44these hands come from how much body
- 00:41:46modification did this guy have forget
- 00:41:48about the head enhancement clinic he
- 00:41:50must have visited a hundred different
- 00:41:52clinics to get all this surgery done
- 00:41:55maybe his entire body is some kind of
- 00:41:57anchor arms type suit okay almost done I
- 00:42:01promise there's only one more instance
- 00:42:03left on the list and it comes from the
- 00:42:04same episode muscle bob buff pants
- 00:42:06before the idea of anchor arms is even
- 00:42:09mentioned we see this
- 00:42:18well you're smelly all thanks to my
- 00:42:21state-of-the-art right set I don't want
- 00:42:25to disappoint you spongebob but you
- 00:42:27won't see any progress with the nose oh
- 00:42:28really that is you want arms well sandy
- 00:42:38has an incredibly muscular human arm
- 00:42:40there's no way you could tell me that
- 00:42:41came from a squirrel no shot that
- 00:42:43actually looks like it belongs to a
- 00:42:45bodybuilder
- 00:42:45so how did it get there well when you
- 00:42:48consider skin theory the explanation is
- 00:42:50actually pretty simple sandy didn't
- 00:42:52simply pull up the sleeve of her scuba
- 00:42:54suit she actually pulled up the sleeve
- 00:42:56of her squirrel costume sandy the
- 00:42:59squirrel isn't a squirrel at all after
- 00:43:07seeing everything you've just seen you
- 00:43:10probably have even more questions than
- 00:43:12when we began
- 00:43:13why are there so many instances of fish
- 00:43:15wearing the skins of other fish what are
- 00:43:17these skin costumes actually made of why
- 00:43:19does every one bikini bottom's seem
- 00:43:20perfectly okay with these bizarre
- 00:43:22moments how many of the fish are
- 00:43:23involved in this conspiracy and what did
- 00:43:25the fish actually look like underneath
- 00:43:27their hidden layers do the fish even
- 00:43:29exist at all and what kind of madman
- 00:43:32would write a children's TV show with so
- 00:43:34many disturbing undertones what does it
- 00:43:37all mean
- 00:43:38well skin theory is a work in progress
- 00:43:40so a lot of these questions are actually
- 00:43:42still being debated right now but let's
- 00:43:44talk about three different sub theories
- 00:43:46that can each explain skin theory in a
- 00:43:48different way you might find that some
- 00:43:50of these ideas actually answer more
- 00:43:52questions than you realize
- 00:44:00so why are the fish in bikini bottom
- 00:44:03constantly wearing costumes and
- 00:44:04pretending to be things that they're not
- 00:44:06maybe we can answer this question by
- 00:44:08looking inwards and thinking about the
- 00:44:10various reasons that people wear masks
- 00:44:12and dress up in human society well the
- 00:44:14most common reason nowadays is for
- 00:44:16entertainment purposes like putting on
- 00:44:17plays or for holiday traditions like
- 00:44:20trick-or-treating on Halloween but for
- 00:44:21most of human history this was not the
- 00:44:23case in ancient times and amongst native
- 00:44:26tribal communities masks and costumes
- 00:44:28have traditionally been worn for
- 00:44:30religious reasons now the exact reasons
- 00:44:32behind this are wildly diverse and
- 00:44:34specific to each culture but there are
- 00:44:37some common themes one of the most
- 00:44:39popular being to represent powerful gods
- 00:44:41or local deities whose spirits are
- 00:44:43channeled down to a physical location
- 00:44:45and communicated with in an attempt to
- 00:44:47gain favor note that these rituals are
- 00:44:49usually dedicated to specific spirits
- 00:44:52within a localized pantheon
- 00:44:54not just widespread deities like Buddha
- 00:44:56or Jesus and again there is a lot of
- 00:44:58variation here among many human
- 00:45:00civilizations but usually these worship
- 00:45:03deities are supernatural entities with
- 00:45:05specific geographic ties to a location
- 00:45:07who have specific days in the calendar
- 00:45:09dedicated to their worship and who
- 00:45:11possess significant powers to do either
- 00:45:13great good or great bad depending on
- 00:45:16what they're supposed to represent masks
- 00:45:18have also been used to symbolize
- 00:45:19deceased relatives allowing those in
- 00:45:22attendance to communicate with their
- 00:45:23loved ones from the afterlife and one
- 00:45:25more reason that early human culture
- 00:45:27used ritual costumes was to teach
- 00:45:29lessons and record history through
- 00:45:31choreographed reenactments there are
- 00:45:33countless examples of people in ancient
- 00:45:35Greek or Roman society who would
- 00:45:37completely change their appearance for
- 00:45:38these purposes sometimes transforming
- 00:45:40themselves into a different gender a
- 00:45:42different race or even a nonhuman animal
- 00:45:45so is it possible that the denizens of
- 00:45:48bikini bottom are actually engaged in a
- 00:45:50bunch of complex social rituals it's
- 00:45:53certainly possible but then again what
- 00:45:55kind of rituals are they performing this
- 00:45:57sub theory suggests not the deceased
- 00:45:59relatives approach or the teaching
- 00:46:01through history route but rather the
- 00:46:03practice of God worshiping and you must
- 00:46:05be thinking
- 00:46:06that's insane there are no gods in
- 00:46:08bikini bottom there isn't a single
- 00:46:09mention of religion or speed
- 00:46:11ality anywhere within the whole show and
- 00:46:13you'd almost be right
- 00:46:15almost enter the flying dutchman so what
- 00:46:23is the flying dutchman exactly let's
- 00:46:25listen to mr. krabs explain him in the
- 00:46:27season 1 episode
- 00:46:28scaredy-pants is the deep ok maybe just
- 00:46:35a little boy every year the flying
- 00:46:44dutchman descends and bikini bottom in a
- 00:46:47pirate ship just saying the flying
- 00:46:55dutchman swoops down and starts stealing
- 00:47:03he puts the word you can never get them
- 00:47:13ok so what I'm gathering here is that
- 00:47:15the flying dutchman is a supernatural
- 00:47:17entity specifically linked to Bikini
- 00:47:19Bottom who descends upon the town on a
- 00:47:22spiritually significant night and
- 00:47:23utilizes immense otherworldly power to
- 00:47:26steal the souls of innocent sea
- 00:47:28creatures very interesting so just for
- 00:47:32the sake of argument let's assume that
- 00:47:33the Flying Dutchman really is a
- 00:47:34localized demon spirit our next question
- 00:47:38would be how have human societies
- 00:47:40approached this problem in the past well
- 00:47:42there are definitely a lot of
- 00:47:43civilizations to draw from but one
- 00:47:45example can be found in Japanese culture
- 00:47:46where there are special ceremonies that
- 00:47:48date back centuries called oneö Shiki
- 00:47:50whose purpose is to drive out evil
- 00:47:52demons
- 00:47:53notice how the performers in this
- 00:47:55ceremony are wearing complex ritual
- 00:47:56costumes and masks that are meant to
- 00:47:58resemble demonic spirits rituals like
- 00:48:01this one were extremely common in many
- 00:48:02early civilizations throughout
- 00:48:04prehistory so why couldn't that be the
- 00:48:06case in bikini bottom
- 00:48:07and notice how multiple characters
- 00:48:09including SpongeBob and Squidward
- 00:48:11specifically choose to model their
- 00:48:12costumes after The Flying Dutchman
- 00:48:14himself the real Dutchman even says at
- 00:48:16one point that the reason he showed up
- 00:48:18that night was because SpongeBob's
- 00:48:20Dutchman costume was so terrible he felt
- 00:48:22offended
- 00:48:37it makes perfect sense that a supreme
- 00:48:39spiritual figure like him would be upset
- 00:48:42by his followers poor worship services
- 00:48:44in Greek mythology as well as many other
- 00:48:47cultures people would work tirelessly to
- 00:48:49worship their gods in the correct way
- 00:48:52fearing terrible retribution if their
- 00:48:54worship was deemed inadequate the
- 00:48:56Dutchman's anger could be a perfect
- 00:48:58example of that
- 00:48:59so how believable is the ritual aspect
- 00:49:02overall well it certainly adds an
- 00:49:04interesting new dimension to the mix and
- 00:49:06it's anthropological comparisons are
- 00:49:08fascinating but considered in the
- 00:49:10context of all those other examples it
- 00:49:13only seems to account for certain
- 00:49:15instances in very isolated moments so as
- 00:49:18a whole this just isn't my favorite sub
- 00:49:193 but it's also not the last mass
- 00:49:29psychogenic illness is defined as the
- 00:49:31rapid spread of illness signs and
- 00:49:33symptoms affecting members of a cohesive
- 00:49:36group originating from a nervous system
- 00:49:38disturbance whereby physical complaints
- 00:49:40that are exhibited unconsciously have no
- 00:49:43corresponding organic aetiology in
- 00:49:46simpler terms this just means that a
- 00:49:47large group of people goes completely
- 00:49:49insane at the same time in the same way
- 00:49:52and with no real physical explanation at
- 00:49:55face value this idea is pretty appealing
- 00:49:57because it recognizes the fact that the
- 00:49:59instances of skin theory are wildly
- 00:50:01diverse and instead of trying to find a
- 00:50:03single common thread that logically
- 00:50:05connects them together and explains why
- 00:50:07the fish are wearing each other's skins
- 00:50:08it provides this simple answer that
- 00:50:10they're just completely insane
- 00:50:12real-world examples of mass psychosis
- 00:50:14are pretty rare throughout history but
- 00:50:16there have been a few documented cases
- 00:50:18like one instance in 15th century France
- 00:50:21where convent full of nuns reportedly
- 00:50:23began to meow like cats and would not
- 00:50:27speak any actual words for several days
- 00:50:29there was also the Tanganyika laughing
- 00:50:32epidemic of 1969 where upwards of 1,000
- 00:50:35school children began laughing
- 00:50:37uncontrollably
- 00:50:38which lasted for months in both
- 00:50:40instances no physical cause or logical
- 00:50:43reason never really presented itself so
- 00:50:46mass psychosis was used to explain the
- 00:50:48behavior is it possible that spongebob
- 00:50:50and his undersea friends have fallen
- 00:50:52victim to this strange and dangerous
- 00:50:54phenomenon
- 00:50:55well inexplicable bouts of total
- 00:50:57insanity have been a recurring theme
- 00:50:58throughout the show's history since the
- 00:51:01beginning chocolate chocolate
- 00:51:05[Applause]
- 00:51:10if the fish are this prone to complete
- 00:51:13psychotic breaks with reality why
- 00:51:15couldn't they have one that prompts them
- 00:51:16to wear costumes of each other but for
- 00:51:19the disease to spread to every other
- 00:51:20resident of Bikini Bottom they would
- 00:51:22probably need to have been a seriously
- 00:51:24traumatic event that acted as a catalyst
- 00:51:26so what could have possibly happened
- 00:51:28that would cause this maybe there was
- 00:51:30some kind of mutation that spread
- 00:51:31throughout the population a neurological
- 00:51:33disease which affects the mind could
- 00:51:35have come from any number of things
- 00:51:36perhaps an unknown parasite or an
- 00:51:39experiment gone horribly wrong then
- 00:51:41again they might also have been affected
- 00:51:43by severe pollution think about how
- 00:51:44destructive in industrial oil spill or
- 00:51:46radioactive waste can be to local sea
- 00:51:49life finally there's one more sub theory
- 00:52:05that needs to be discussed and it's
- 00:52:06probably the boldest of them all it's
- 00:52:09also the most comprehensive account for
- 00:52:11skin theory meaning that it can be used
- 00:52:12to explain almost every single instance
- 00:52:15of skin theory we've discussed so far
- 00:52:17and on top of that it can even be used
- 00:52:20to make sense of other background
- 00:52:22inconsistencies that have nothing to do
- 00:52:24with skin theory but have nonetheless
- 00:52:25plagued this show since episode 1 this
- 00:52:29is the costumed human hypothesis what if
- 00:52:32the sea creatures of Bikini Bottom
- 00:52:34aren't actually sea creatures at all
- 00:52:37what if they're just human beings in
- 00:52:41fish costumes
- 00:52:44I know that sounds crazy but don't worry
- 00:52:46cuz it gets even crazier you might be
- 00:52:49wondering if all the characters are
- 00:52:51actually human beings and costumes how
- 00:52:53can they breathe underwater well here
- 00:52:56comes the final piece of the puzzle
- 00:52:59they aren't underwater everything you
- 00:53:02see is a lie now if this is true it
- 00:53:08would completely revolutionize the way
- 00:53:10we look at SpongeBob SquarePants forever
- 00:53:12so let's review some evidence these are
- 00:53:15the specific moments which most strongly
- 00:53:17indicate that some kind of human being
- 00:53:19exists in bikini bottom
- 00:53:21but all the other clips we saw before
- 00:53:23are also compatible especially
- 00:53:25considering that we've already observed
- 00:53:27fish who are wearing multiple layers at
- 00:53:29the same time it's absolutely possible
- 00:53:31that any one of them could be doing this
- 00:53:34so let's break it down the costumed
- 00:53:36human hypothesis proposes that every
- 00:53:38character in SpongeBob SquarePants
- 00:53:40big and small are actually just human
- 00:53:43beings and costumes who refer to each
- 00:53:45other by made-up names and who act out
- 00:53:47rehearsed situations for the viewer to
- 00:53:49observe so they aren't actually
- 00:53:51encountering real problems they're just
- 00:53:53acting out situations identical to how
- 00:53:55human actors on a stage aren't actually
- 00:53:58dealing with the problems in the script
- 00:54:00it's their characters that are and
- 00:54:02that's why there are so many references
- 00:54:04to skin wearing and costumed fish but
- 00:54:07what about the claim that they aren't
- 00:54:08actually underwater it probably seems
- 00:54:11ridiculous at first to imagine all this
- 00:54:13action occurring on dry land but when
- 00:54:15you think about it closely that actually
- 00:54:17answers a ton of questions that have
- 00:54:19been plaguing viewers for years for
- 00:54:22instance how can there be fire under
- 00:54:24water this is a fun joke that the show
- 00:54:26likes to make and sometimes they're
- 00:54:27pretty self-aware usually turning it
- 00:54:29into a fourth wall break for comedic
- 00:54:30effect but at least it's warm around the
- 00:54:33fire and now that's definitely funny but
- 00:54:41isn't it easier to just consider that
- 00:54:43the fire exists because they're on dry
- 00:54:45land and here's a good one if bikini
- 00:54:48bottom is actually underwater
- 00:54:49why is everyone stuck to the ground have
- 00:54:51you ever noticed how nobody ever swims
- 00:54:53upward the ocean is a three-dimensional
- 00:54:56space and in the real
- 00:54:57world life exists on all levels it's not
- 00:55:00just limited to the seafloor this is
- 00:55:02actually a seriously troubling question
- 00:55:04to consider like why do spongebob
- 00:55:06characters act like gravity is even a
- 00:55:09factor at all the characters should just
- 00:55:12be able to swim up and down whenever
- 00:55:14they want to so why is everyone
- 00:55:16inexplicably confined to the ground
- 00:55:18again this is easily resolved if we
- 00:55:20consider that they're just people and
- 00:55:22costumes walking around on dry land
- 00:55:25let's keep going and we've probably all
- 00:55:28wondered about this one how can there be
- 00:55:30a beach under water this one completely
- 00:55:33defies logic and although there are some
- 00:55:35semi official explanations floating
- 00:55:37around out there these answers are
- 00:55:39problematic at best the most common
- 00:55:41explanation is that the water in goo
- 00:55:43lagoon is a different density than the
- 00:55:45water in Bikini Bottom so they separate
- 00:55:47well first of all this does absolutely
- 00:55:49nothing to address the hundreds of other
- 00:55:51instances in spongebob where liquid can
- 00:55:53be seen in glasses coming out of hoses
- 00:55:56and even in pools and even if goo lagoon
- 00:55:59is a different density the two bodies of
- 00:56:01water are far too separate and clear-cut
- 00:56:04to be existing in contact with one
- 00:56:05another there's just no good reason that
- 00:56:07explains why this Beach or any other
- 00:56:10liquids in Bikini Bottom can feasibly
- 00:56:12exist and look at this where did this
- 00:56:14river come from and wait what is that
- 00:56:16guy doing what is he fishing for he is a
- 00:56:19fish how do you make sense of this well
- 00:56:23consider this
- 00:56:24what if goo lagoon and all the other
- 00:56:26water you see in the show is made of
- 00:56:29real actual water and everything else is
- 00:56:32just air yet again this makes perfect
- 00:56:35sense one more to consider okay so the
- 00:56:38show is based around the idea of
- 00:56:39sentient sea creatures that understand
- 00:56:42language wear clothes and have created
- 00:56:44functional society obviously none of
- 00:56:47this exists in real life so the viewers
- 00:56:49are asked to suspend our disbelief for a
- 00:56:51bit and essentially just roll with it
- 00:56:53every time we watch and that's final
- 00:56:55there's nothing wrong with rolling with
- 00:56:57an unusual premise if it means you'll
- 00:56:59enjoy the show more but if we apply the
- 00:57:01costumed human hypothesis this
- 00:57:03suspension of disbelief is no longer
- 00:57:06even necessary there's no need to roll
- 00:57:09with it because the show isn't sign
- 00:57:11typically inaccurate anymore the fish
- 00:57:13have human characteristics because they
- 00:57:15are human beings and it's that simple
- 00:57:18their underwater environment doesn't
- 00:57:20obey the natural laws of the ocean
- 00:57:22because they aren't underwater honestly
- 00:57:25we could go on for hours about all the
- 00:57:27little inconsistencies that appear in
- 00:57:29this show everybody's noticed them just
- 00:57:31know that almost every logical problem
- 00:57:33you can find in SpongeBob SquarePants
- 00:57:35can be solved by applying some facet of
- 00:57:38skin theory anyway if the show is
- 00:57:40entirely comprised of human beings
- 00:57:42dressed up like fish they sure do a good
- 00:57:44job of hiding it right other than those
- 00:57:47few instances we discussed earlier you
- 00:57:49never actually see human beings or
- 00:57:52anything else that positively indicates
- 00:57:54human beings exist in this world right
- 00:57:58wrong there are actually two characters
- 00:58:02who have been sitting right under your
- 00:58:04nose the whole time and the fact that
- 00:58:07they even exist at all is a huge
- 00:58:10argument to support the costumed human
- 00:58:12hypothesis you have to know who I'm
- 00:58:14talking about mermaidman and barnacleboy
- 00:58:21how could we ever forget about these two
- 00:58:24they are literally human beings dressed
- 00:58:27up in costumes doesn't it strike you as
- 00:58:30a little coincidental that the only
- 00:58:33actual people we ever see in this show
- 00:58:36just happen to be wearing costumes I
- 00:58:39mean forget about all the subtle
- 00:58:41implications and the deep meditech xual
- 00:58:43hints the show is practically shoving
- 00:58:46the answer right in your face and daring
- 00:58:49you to connect the dots just think about
- 00:58:51it none of the other sea creatures ever
- 00:58:53question what two elderly human beings
- 00:58:56are doing way down here and bikini
- 00:58:58bottom they just roll with it also
- 00:59:00consider this you never see them without
- 00:59:02their costumes on just like how you
- 00:59:05never see any of the other characters
- 00:59:06without their fish costumes on Mermaid
- 00:59:09Man and Barnacle Boy are constantly
- 00:59:11playing their roles they're acting like
- 00:59:14something else they're pretending to be
- 00:59:16something else they are doing exactly
- 00:59:18what everyone else is doing and that's
- 00:59:22why nobody in Bikini Bottom tree
- 00:59:24stem any differently honestly mermaidman
- 00:59:27and barnacleboy might as well be the
- 00:59:28poster boys for skin theory you couldn't
- 00:59:30find better evidence if you tried
- 00:59:32so in conclusion mermaidman and
- 00:59:35barnacleboy aren't actually superheroes
- 00:59:38they're just regular people in costumes
- 00:59:40pretending to be superheroes spongebob
- 00:59:43Patrick Squidward and literally everyone
- 00:59:45else in Bikini Bottom aren't actually
- 00:59:47fish they're just regular people in
- 00:59:49costumes pretending to be fish and
- 00:59:51finally the entire undersea setting of
- 00:59:54SpongeBob SquarePants is an elaborate
- 00:59:56illusion and everything you see is
- 00:59:58actually occurring on dry land
- 01:00:01everything you know is a lie so those
- 01:00:04are the current competing sub theories
- 01:00:06the show also might be utilizing a mix
- 01:00:08of all three so it's not necessary for
- 01:00:10you to pick a favorite but after seeing
- 01:00:12this you're probably left with a very
- 01:00:13bizarre sense of confusion and a deep
- 01:00:16yearning for the answer to one simple
- 01:00:18question why why does this exist if skin
- 01:00:23theory is true why would the writers of
- 01:00:25a children's cartoon willingly choose to
- 01:00:28do this to their own show well I didn't
- 01:00:31create Spongebob so I can't personally
- 01:00:33answer that we can only interpret what
- 01:00:35we observe but we can always speculate
- 01:00:37and there's plenty to speculate about so
- 01:00:40let's take a step back from the show
- 01:00:41itself and talk about the real-world
- 01:00:44environment where it was born
- 01:00:47[Music]
- 01:00:50if you watch the show growing up you'd
- 01:00:53probably agree that the original four
- 01:00:55seasons of Spongebob were its best it
- 01:00:57would take a very long time and probably
- 01:00:59a whole new video to explain why those
- 01:01:02first few seasons were so good but most
- 01:01:04people agree that the humor and the
- 01:01:06dialogue undergoes a significant tonal
- 01:01:08shift sometime around season four some
- 01:01:11would argue that the changes had already
- 01:01:12begun by the time season four came out
- 01:01:15but for the most part these episodes are
- 01:01:17still pretty solid maybe not up to the
- 01:01:19incredible standards of the first three
- 01:01:21seasons but still not bad so what's so
- 01:01:25special about the first four seasons of
- 01:01:26Spongebob and why do almost all the
- 01:01:29instances of skin theory just happen to
- 01:01:31be found during the same four seasons
- 01:01:33when the show was at its critical peak
- 01:01:35to answer this we can only turn to one
- 01:01:38man him no not the pirate I'm talking
- 01:01:42about him this mouth and the man who
- 01:01:46this mouth belongs to
- 01:01:49Stephen Hillenburg Stephen Hillenburg
- 01:01:52was the man who created Spongebob
- 01:01:54Squarepants he was a longtime animator
- 01:01:57and cartoonist and before creating
- 01:01:59Spongebob sometime around 1997 he
- 01:02:02previously worked with Nickelodeon as a
- 01:02:04creative director for Rocko's Modern
- 01:02:06Life from 1993 to 1996 another show
- 01:02:10known for its absurd and edgy humor but
- 01:02:27in addition to being a celebrated
- 01:02:28cartoonist
- 01:02:29Hillenburg was also a teacher and a
- 01:02:31marine biologist who genuinely loved the
- 01:02:33ocean so after coming up with the idea
- 01:02:36for spongebob and pitching it to
- 01:02:37Nickelodeon he acted as head writer and
- 01:02:39executive producer on all sixty episodes
- 01:02:42from seasons 1 2 & 3 he also worked on
- 01:02:45the spongebob movie but then chose to
- 01:02:47depart from the show shortly afterwards
- 01:02:49in 2002 following this departure
- 01:02:52Hillenburg remained somewhat distant
- 01:02:53from the show letting it change and grow
- 01:02:56in different ways under the creative
- 01:02:57control of his friend Paul tibbitt but
- 01:03:00then in 2014 it was reported that
- 01:03:02Hillenburg would be returning to
- 01:03:04SpongeBob SquarePants in a creative role
- 01:03:06nearly a decade after leaving this
- 01:03:08actually ended up coming true and he
- 01:03:10directly worked on the production of
- 01:03:12SpongeBob's second feature-length movie
- 01:03:14sponge out of water the movie was
- 01:03:16received very well by critics and
- 01:03:18ultimately made many fans hopeful for
- 01:03:20what SpongeBob's future might hold
- 01:03:22meanwhile if we look at the timelines
- 01:03:24Hillenburg tenure in charge of spongebob
- 01:03:26lines up perfectly with the show's
- 01:03:28golden age of seasons one through three
- 01:03:30and it follows that his unique creative
- 01:03:33input might have been the secret
- 01:03:35ingredient for making SpongeBob's so
- 01:03:37good during those first few seasons
- 01:03:39coincidentally his departure from the
- 01:03:41show also marked a sharp decline in the
- 01:03:43kind of bizarre instances we've been
- 01:03:45discussing which all but stopped showing
- 01:03:47up after season four there may be
- 01:03:49occasional references to costumes and
- 01:03:51skins found throughout seasons 5 through
- 01:03:5312 but these are usually far less
- 01:03:55complex and harder to find
- 01:03:57so with Stephen Hillenburg really
- 01:03:59responsible for the creation of skin
- 01:04:01theory and spongebob before
- 01:04:02can answer that we have to know was he
- 01:04:05even capable of devising such an
- 01:04:07elaborate and bizarre message absolutely
- 01:04:10just look at some of the traits that
- 01:04:12define SpongeBob's unique style of humor
- 01:04:15during those first few seasons the show
- 01:04:17obviously used a lot of very simple
- 01:04:19visual gags but there's also a lot of
- 01:04:21nuanced humor what he calls it and
- 01:04:34genuinely well-written dialogue homemade
- 01:04:38pie Sherlock guard oh these aren't
- 01:04:40homemade they were made in a factory a
- 01:04:42bomb factory they're bombs
- 01:04:45another treat that defined the show
- 01:04:47during those first few seasons was
- 01:04:48radical absurdity sometimes the humor
- 01:04:51would be pretty nonsensical but then
- 01:04:53other times the show would veer wildly
- 01:04:55off course into these unbelievable Kafka
- 01:04:58esque tangents of experimental
- 01:05:00filmmaking
- 01:05:06[Music]
- 01:05:24and lastly we all know about the hidden
- 01:05:28adult themes in spongebob examples of
- 01:05:30this can be seen through some pretty
- 01:05:31simple double meanings and offhand
- 01:05:33comments why else would we run around in
- 01:05:41colored undies I can think of three good
- 01:05:43reasons but it can also be seen through
- 01:05:45highly complex extended metaphors which
- 01:05:48can transform the entire plot of an
- 01:05:51episode one of the best examples of this
- 01:05:53can be seen in the season 1 episode
- 01:05:55karate choppers which on the surface
- 01:05:57appears to be a pretty innocent story of
- 01:05:59two friends who enjoy practicing martial
- 01:06:01arts but when you look at this episode a
- 01:06:03little closer it actually transforms
- 01:06:06into a highly provocative and explicit
- 01:06:08parable of lust and abstinence all this
- 01:06:11by simply substituting out a few words
- 01:06:14and recognizing that every reference to
- 01:06:16karate is actually a clear reference to
- 01:06:19sex yeah let that one sink in for a
- 01:06:38second but despite all this at the end
- 01:06:40of the day SpongeBob SquarePants was a
- 01:06:42kid show but the difference was
- 01:06:44Hillenburg didn't treat his audience
- 01:06:46like they were children
- 01:06:47he gave them complex jokes he gave them
- 01:06:50surreal truly absurd humor and he
- 01:06:52constantly pushed the envelope this man
- 01:06:55was never afraid to go out on a limb and
- 01:06:57if his jokes went right over the
- 01:06:58audience's head so what that makes it
- 01:07:01even funnier so could it be possible at
- 01:07:12Hillenburg and his team of writers
- 01:07:13intentionally created the complex hidden
- 01:07:16messages and references behind skin
- 01:07:18theory I can think of no better
- 01:07:20candidate in the world but unfortunately
- 01:07:23there will never be any hard answers to
- 01:07:25these questions in 2017
- 01:07:28Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS a
- 01:07:30neurological disease that affects motor
- 01:07:32function and muscular control the news
- 01:07:35came as a shock and he passed away
- 01:07:37shortly thereafter in November of 2018
- 01:07:39the loss of Stephen Hillenburg was felt
- 01:07:42by millions of people across the world
- 01:07:44who had grown up with his work for many
- 01:07:46this show played a greater role than
- 01:07:48anything else towards developing their
- 01:07:50sense of humor into what it is today
- 01:07:52it gave us hilarious stories heartfelt
- 01:07:54moments and genuine happiness far more
- 01:07:57than a simple cable entertainment we
- 01:07:59could have ever expected Stephen
- 01:08:01Hillenburg was the man to thank for all
- 01:08:03of this and immediately the outpouring
- 01:08:05of support and praises for this
- 01:08:07wonderful man's life showed just how
- 01:08:09far-reaching and positive of an impact
- 01:08:11he truly had no matter how you judge a
- 01:08:20show SpongeBob SquarePants will always
- 01:08:22be remembered as one of the greatest
- 01:08:23television experiences that has ever
- 01:08:26been aired it's hilarious its quotable
- 01:08:28it's relatable it's emotional it's deep
- 01:08:31no cartoon has ever been able to bridge
- 01:08:34the gap between youth and adulthood
- 01:08:36quite like spongebob has and no show
- 01:08:38probably ever will again it's one of the
- 01:08:41only shows out there that's just as
- 01:08:43funny if not even funnier when you go
- 01:08:45back and re-watch it with age no Patrick
- 01:08:48mayonnaise is not an instrument even on
- 01:08:50the 10th the 20th and the hundredth
- 01:08:53viewing of these episodes it's still
- 01:08:55just as good as it was when we tuned in
- 01:08:57and saw premiere on Saturday morning but
- 01:08:59now the jokes that we never understood
- 01:09:01because we were too young suddenly
- 01:09:04becomes some of the greatest moments of
- 01:09:05all time
- 01:09:06the little details that we never even
- 01:09:08noticed before can change our perception
- 01:09:10of an entire episode and certain
- 01:09:12characters who we look down on or
- 01:09:14laughed at as children suddenly become
- 01:09:16relatable and endearing just like the
- 01:09:19location of Bikini Bottom somewhere
- 01:09:21below the waves off the Pacific coast
- 01:09:22the care and attention that went into
- 01:09:25this show runs incredibly deep a truly
- 01:09:28great show should never be pinned down
- 01:09:30by one official interpretation it should
- 01:09:32always be challenged reimagined and
- 01:09:35redefined skin theory is only one of the
- 01:09:39fantastic ways that we can look at
- 01:09:40spongebob
- 01:09:41so if you think that this whole theory
- 01:09:43is ridiculous or maybe if you find it
- 01:09:45just a bit too disturbing that's okay
- 01:09:50you're allowed to see the show however
- 01:09:52you want as long as this video starts a
- 01:09:55conversation or maybe even inspires some
- 01:09:57older fans to sit down and rewatch their
- 01:09:59favorite episodes then I consider that
- 01:10:02to be a huge success so what do you
- 01:10:05think could it really be possible and if
- 01:10:07Pandora's box has finally been opened on
- 01:10:09critical spongebob analysis what
- 01:10:12unbelievable Theory could come next but
- 01:10:14no matter what new evidence is
- 01:10:16discovered
- 01:10:16SpongeBob SquarePants will always be the
- 01:10:19greatest television show of our
- 01:10:21generation and nothing will ever change
- 01:10:23that
