- 00:01:29great thing is the teachers come from
- 00:01:31lots of backgrounds so you have ielts
- 00:01:34and truffle trainers you also have
- 00:01:36teachers who have a background in
- 00:01:37business filmmaking music even
- 00:01:40journalism so you can find somebody to
- 00:01:44match your needs
- 00:01:46more about that later let's get into it
- 00:01:49and start making grammar
- 00:01:51easy
- 00:01:58i think language is like music
- 00:02:02you listen to music and you hear
- 00:02:05beautiful sounds you listen to a
- 00:02:07language and i hear beautiful sounds
- 00:02:10[Music]
- 00:02:11with music you have
- 00:02:13different names for the notes and the
- 00:02:15order they go in
- 00:02:17with language you have different names
- 00:02:20for the words and the order they go in
- 00:02:23and that's it grammar
- 00:02:26just describes the language
- 00:02:29it's not the actual language
- 00:02:32it's just a way of talking about it
- 00:02:35now maybe you started to get nervous
- 00:02:38about grammar at school when your
- 00:02:41teacher began to introduce some names
- 00:02:44and labels for things like
- 00:02:47the present perfect subjunctive the
- 00:02:50possessive determiners the predicate
- 00:02:53and then suddenly lots of rules and then
- 00:02:56exceptions
- 00:02:58and then at the end of the day you felt
- 00:03:00that grammar was the same as
- 00:03:03headache
- 00:03:06and that's very very common you see i
- 00:03:09think we need to change things
- 00:03:11i think we should start by listening to
- 00:03:14the language
- 00:03:16loving it and then repeating it
- 00:03:19not
- 00:03:20starting with the grammar
- 00:03:22talking about it
- 00:03:25so when learning english i suggest you
- 00:03:28listen
- 00:03:29you love it
- 00:03:30and then you repeat it
- 00:03:32and let me tell you a little anecdote
- 00:03:35right this is when i was younger i was a
- 00:03:36teenager and i began learning to play
- 00:03:39the piano
- 00:03:40i did it on my own i had a little
- 00:03:42keyboard something probably
- 00:03:45something like this
- 00:03:47yep
- 00:03:48of course those days we didn't have apps
- 00:03:51but we had something similar
- 00:03:53and so i was at home and i was playing
- 00:04:00and i was you know practicing teaching
- 00:04:02myself
- 00:04:03and then after a few weeks
- 00:04:06um my friend came along and he's a
- 00:04:08musician he played the guitar um and he
- 00:04:11said what are you learning so i showed
- 00:04:13him like
- 00:04:14[Music]
- 00:04:17and he said great that's a scale in c
- 00:04:19major and i was like a what a scale in c
- 00:04:24major
- 00:04:25and he said yes i thought that's
- 00:04:26interesting and then i played i played
- 00:04:28him something i'd learnt
- 00:04:33and he said oh an arpeggio
- 00:04:37i had no idea and then
- 00:04:40[Music]
- 00:04:41[Applause]
- 00:04:46oh
- 00:04:47a blues scale in c minor i had no idea
- 00:04:51and he said that's great and what he was
- 00:04:54doing he was describing
- 00:04:56what i was playing but i had listened
- 00:04:59loved it and repeated what's interesting
- 00:05:02is that then i began to get curious
- 00:05:06about the names and the rules and the
- 00:05:08order and it actually started to help me
- 00:05:12and i think it's the same with language
- 00:05:14right what we should do is start by
- 00:05:17listening loving repeating and then get
- 00:05:20curious
- 00:05:22find out the names the labels the rules
- 00:05:25and that can help us and that's exactly
- 00:05:27what i did when i learned spanish and
- 00:05:29when i learned chinese
- 00:05:31i began with the language and
- 00:05:34doing it loving it repeating it and then
- 00:05:37bit by bit
- 00:05:39learning the labels and the rules and i
- 00:05:41think that's the way to do it and that's
- 00:05:44the way to think about it
- 00:05:46so for me grammar always comes second
- 00:05:50it's a kind of a way of clarifying um
- 00:05:55rather than a basis for learning
- 00:05:58with this in mind i offer you this
- 00:06:00lesson coming up now basic grammar
- 00:06:04i imagine most of you are beyond
- 00:06:06beginner level otherwise you wouldn't
- 00:06:08really understand me
- 00:06:10so use this as a way of kind of
- 00:06:13getting clear about the grammar
- 00:06:15reviewing it getting curious about the
- 00:06:19rules
- 00:06:20and use it as something to help you move
- 00:06:22along
- 00:06:23not as a starting point
- 00:06:26great let's get into it
- 00:06:34okay so we're going to look at well
- 00:06:36eight of the most important parts of
- 00:06:39speech right speaking
- 00:06:41and these include
- 00:06:43verbs
- 00:06:44adverbs
- 00:06:45nouns
- 00:06:46articles adjectives pronouns
- 00:06:50prepositions and conjunctions omg
- 00:06:54now you may be thinking that's a lot
- 00:06:56keith
- 00:06:57yes it is but don't worry you don't have
- 00:06:59to be stuck in the classroom with me
- 00:07:02this is youtube right you can go down to
- 00:07:05the description and there's a timestamp
- 00:07:08and you can click on the part that is
- 00:07:10most interesting or useful for you and
- 00:07:13just watch that you don't have to watch
- 00:07:16the whole video
- 00:07:17you can but you don't have to
- 00:07:21okay i'm going to begin with verbs
- 00:07:25so what are verbs simply verbs are doing
- 00:07:29words they describe actions that we do
- 00:07:32right like
- 00:07:35drive
- 00:07:36spanish roundabout
- 00:07:38always fun and games
- 00:07:43cook
- 00:07:48lose
- 00:07:52where's my pen
- 00:07:55also they can describe states of being
- 00:07:59like be
- 00:08:00or seem
- 00:08:02okay
- 00:08:03the most important thing about verbs is
- 00:08:05they can describe actions in the present
- 00:08:09in the past and in the future different
- 00:08:12tenses
- 00:08:13so in the present we can say
- 00:08:17i'm cooking a soup
- 00:08:20or we can talk about a present habit for
- 00:08:24example and say i usually cook on
- 00:08:27sundays
- 00:08:29and one of the most important things to
- 00:08:31remember because we don't really
- 00:08:34conjugate verbs in english it's i cook
- 00:08:38you cook they cook we cook we all cook
- 00:08:42however
- 00:08:43he
- 00:08:44she and it
- 00:08:46cooks
- 00:08:47you must add an s
- 00:08:49when you're talking about another person
- 00:08:51he or she or a thing
- 00:08:54it's the dog
- 00:08:57so at the s now you're saying of course
- 00:08:59i know that keith but when you're
- 00:09:01speaking
- 00:09:03lots of students at a high level forget
- 00:09:06the s
- 00:09:07yes he cook a lot no he cooks a lot so
- 00:09:11you need to practice a lot
- 00:09:14speaking out the s
- 00:09:16and the thing is there are three
- 00:09:18different pronunciations
- 00:09:20there's
- 00:09:24is
- 00:09:25depending on the word right
- 00:09:28she drives
- 00:09:31he cooks
- 00:09:33he
- 00:09:34loses so be careful about the
- 00:09:37pronunciation especially when speaking
- 00:09:40especially when speaking
- 00:09:42only when speaking
- 00:09:44now when we talk about the past
- 00:09:46verbs can be regular which means they're
- 00:09:49all the same or irregular means they a
- 00:09:52bit different right now
- 00:09:55the regular past you just add e d
- 00:09:59but again when you're speaking that can
- 00:10:01be three different sounds it can be
- 00:10:09depending on the verb
- 00:10:11so you may have for example i cooked
- 00:10:14yesterday
- 00:10:16i washed my face
- 00:10:19i wanted to go to the cinema
- 00:10:23so be careful on the pronunciation
- 00:10:26if it's not regular then it's irregular
- 00:10:29and they're all different and you just
- 00:10:31have to learn them there are about 200
- 00:10:34irregular verbs in english and in my
- 00:10:37free pdf you can see the most important
- 00:10:40ones for you at a beginner
- 00:10:43intermediate level an example might be
- 00:10:46drive i drove yesterday
- 00:10:50a final interesting thing about verbs is
- 00:10:52that they can become a noun very easily
- 00:10:56if you add ing right cook
- 00:10:59cooking
- 00:11:00cooking becomes a noun
- 00:11:02i like cooking or cooking is fun
- 00:11:06driving is dangerous
- 00:11:08it becomes a noun great
- 00:11:11that's it let's move on
- 00:11:18next up adverbs
- 00:11:20now adverbs
- 00:11:22tell you
- 00:11:23how you do something
- 00:11:26right so if you drive
- 00:11:28how do you drive i drive quickly
- 00:11:31i drive safely they tell me how i do
- 00:11:35something so they describe the verb
- 00:11:39normally they they're easy to make right
- 00:11:42you would take an adjective like quick
- 00:11:44and you add l y
- 00:11:47quickly
- 00:11:48or safe
- 00:11:49safely
- 00:11:51and normally usually the adverb comes
- 00:11:54after
- 00:11:55the verb
- 00:11:56i drive quickly
- 00:11:58i drive safely
- 00:12:00if there is a thing
- 00:12:02right i read books
- 00:12:06then the adverb will come after the
- 00:12:08thing or after the object
- 00:12:10i read books slowly
- 00:12:13now in a similar way to verbs adverbs
- 00:12:17can also be regular or irregular
- 00:12:2099 of them are regular
- 00:12:22phew great but there are a handful maybe
- 00:12:25five or six which are irregular
- 00:12:28so instead of taking the adjective and
- 00:12:31adding l y you have a different word
- 00:12:34most common one is
- 00:12:37good well
- 00:12:39so we don't say i cook goodly
- 00:12:42no i cook well
- 00:12:45and the others are quite easy because a
- 00:12:47lot of them are the same as the
- 00:12:48adjective and the adverb like fast fast
- 00:12:52hard hard late late
- 00:12:55right
- 00:12:56i drive fast i play hard i arrived late
- 00:13:01so these are quite easy to remember
- 00:13:03in addition to talking about how you do
- 00:13:07something
- 00:13:08we can talk about the time when you do
- 00:13:10it and how often you do it
- 00:13:13and we use adverbs for this right for
- 00:13:16example i drive carefully we said i
- 00:13:20always drive carefully always tells us
- 00:13:24how often i do it
- 00:13:26and that adverb normally goes in between
- 00:13:29the subject and the verb the person and
- 00:13:32the doing word i
- 00:13:34always drive
- 00:13:36carefully i always drive my car
- 00:13:40i don't let any tom dick or harry drive
- 00:13:43my car
- 00:13:44the most common adverbs here are a
- 00:13:47frequency are sometimes
- 00:13:51always rarely hardly ever never
- 00:13:54others are things like now and again
- 00:13:58from time to time once in a blue moon
- 00:14:01meaning
- 00:14:02very rarely
- 00:14:03when you have more than one word it's
- 00:14:05usually called an adverbial
- 00:14:08and this can go
- 00:14:10either at the beginning
- 00:14:12or at the end of the sentence
- 00:14:14so you may say well once in a blue moon
- 00:14:17um i
- 00:14:19drive my wife's car
- 00:14:22or i drive my wife's car once in a blue
- 00:14:25moon
- 00:14:26at the beginning or at the end
- 00:14:28a final note is that adverbs actually
- 00:14:31can also describe adjectives oh yes how
- 00:14:36interesting more about that later
- 00:14:40let's move on now to talk about nouns
- 00:14:48right next nouns
- 00:14:51so nouns are
- 00:14:53things
- 00:14:54like
- 00:14:55piano
- 00:14:57pen
- 00:14:59book
- 00:15:02book
- 00:15:03or
- 00:15:05people
- 00:15:06like friend
- 00:15:08teacher
- 00:15:09colleague
- 00:15:10or places
- 00:15:12like classroom
- 00:15:14city kitchen
- 00:15:16notice if you take things like
- 00:15:19friend or city and you actually use the
- 00:15:22name like jack and manchester it's still
- 00:15:26a noun but we call that a proper noun i
- 00:15:29don't know why a proper noun
- 00:15:31and if you're writing it it has a
- 00:15:33capital letter
- 00:15:35but not when you're speaking it
- 00:15:36obviously
- 00:15:38now the thing about nouns right
- 00:15:40is that you can either have one
- 00:15:43or
- 00:15:44more than one
- 00:15:46singular one or plural more than one
- 00:15:50three four two three four five six and
- 00:15:52so on when you make a noun into a plural
- 00:15:56then you know this right you add an s or
- 00:15:59an e s
- 00:16:00but be careful when speaking because to
- 00:16:03make a noun into a plural when speaking
- 00:16:06you either add
- 00:16:09well there are three sounds right
- 00:16:11there's
- 00:16:14is
- 00:16:16for example
- 00:16:18books
- 00:16:20cars
- 00:16:22boxes
- 00:16:24so depending on the
- 00:16:26last sound of the noun it will tell you
- 00:16:29which sound to make at the end
- 00:16:32another important thing about nouns is
- 00:16:34that you can count them
- 00:16:37a pen
- 00:16:39two pens
- 00:16:41three pens
- 00:16:43so you can count
- 00:16:45nouns however you can't count
- 00:16:49all nouns some of them are uncountable
- 00:16:52things like liquids or powders
- 00:16:56for example water you can't count water
- 00:17:00or coffee you can't count coffee
- 00:17:03grammatically
- 00:17:04so what we can do is we can use a trick
- 00:17:07to count right we can say
- 00:17:09a glass of water
- 00:17:12or a cup of coffee
- 00:17:17rice you can't count rice
- 00:17:19grammatically but you can say a grain of
- 00:17:22rice or a bowl of rice
- 00:17:25so these are the tricks we use to make
- 00:17:27them countable
- 00:17:29the most or some of the most common
- 00:17:31uncountable nouns that
- 00:17:34are probably countable in your language
- 00:17:36so can be confusing things like
- 00:17:39furniture
- 00:17:41information
- 00:17:42news advice they're uncountable
- 00:17:46so you cannot make a plural you can't
- 00:17:49say furnitures
- 00:17:51no you have to say furniture you can
- 00:17:53save five pieces of furniture
- 00:17:56right if you want to make it countable
- 00:17:59likewise pieces of advice
- 00:18:01some pieces of news
- 00:18:04pieces of information if you want to
- 00:18:06make them countable
- 00:18:08the final thing to mention about nouns
- 00:18:10is that
- 00:18:12they're not only single words
- 00:18:14they can also be several words and that
- 00:18:17we would call a noun phrase logical
- 00:18:20right noun phrase
- 00:18:21now phrases it's interesting to be aware
- 00:18:25of this
- 00:18:26because when you're listening it will
- 00:18:27help you mark the boundaries between the
- 00:18:30noun phrase the verb
- 00:18:33adjective and other parts of speech
- 00:18:36so for example if i say
- 00:18:38the pen in my hand is black
- 00:18:41the pen in my hand
- 00:18:43that's the noun phrase is verb black
- 00:18:48so it's a longer phrase
- 00:18:51it's useful because when you're
- 00:18:52listening
- 00:18:53you want to be listening for the verb
- 00:18:55and then go back
- 00:18:56for example
- 00:18:58the woman with blonde hair and glasses
- 00:19:02is from london
- 00:19:04is from london that's the verb is
- 00:19:08everything before then is a noun phrase
- 00:19:10the woman with blonde hair and glasses
- 00:19:13that's the noun phrase so as you're
- 00:19:15listening it's really can really help
- 00:19:18your listening comprehension to be aware
- 00:19:20that the noun is not just one word it
- 00:19:23can be a phrase
- 00:19:25okay let's move on
- 00:19:33next up i'm going to talk about articles
- 00:19:35and three kinds of articles we'll talk
- 00:19:37about the first one is
- 00:19:41and you'll notice
- 00:19:43hopefully when i talked about nouns i
- 00:19:45said pen book
- 00:19:47but of course we usually say a pen
- 00:19:50a blue pen a black pen
- 00:19:53a book
- 00:19:54if a noun begins with a vowel sound like
- 00:19:57elephant or apple
- 00:20:00then we say an
- 00:20:02and when you're speaking link an
- 00:20:04elephant
- 00:20:05an apple
- 00:20:07and people go napple what's napple no an
- 00:20:11apple because you're linking an elephant
- 00:20:15do notice
- 00:20:16with plurals
- 00:20:18like dogs we don't use
- 00:20:21a
- 00:20:23right i love dogs
- 00:20:25i like cats
- 00:20:28also with uncountable nouns we don't use
- 00:20:32a or
- 00:20:34i need information
- 00:20:36okay
- 00:20:37the second kind is
- 00:20:39the
- 00:20:40and this is when we
- 00:20:42basically
- 00:20:44are referring to a specific noun and
- 00:20:47it's where you know
- 00:20:49which one i mean
- 00:20:51right
- 00:20:53can you pass me the blue pen
- 00:20:56we can see the blue pen we both know
- 00:20:59which one i mean
- 00:21:00that's when we use the
- 00:21:02the third kind is what is called
- 00:21:05demonstrative articles
- 00:21:08because they kind of demonstrate where
- 00:21:10the thing is
- 00:21:11this and that
- 00:21:13so for example this pen is blue
- 00:21:17that pen
- 00:21:19is black
- 00:21:20this is close that is far
- 00:21:24some students ask me what's the distance
- 00:21:27when it goes from this to that one meter
- 00:21:30two meters
- 00:21:32it's not about distance it's about
- 00:21:34feeling
- 00:21:35right if you say that you're creating
- 00:21:38the feeling of distance so it's all
- 00:21:40relative
- 00:21:42and it's it's not only physical distance
- 00:21:44it can be time distance right this story
- 00:21:48i'm going to tell you is very
- 00:21:49interesting
- 00:21:51this story now
- 00:21:53that story you told me yesterday was
- 00:21:55interesting
- 00:21:56that story in the past right okay so
- 00:22:00it's also a time distance
- 00:22:02singular this
- 00:22:04plural these
- 00:22:06you have to smile a lot these
- 00:22:09singular that
- 00:22:11plural those
- 00:22:14oh
- 00:22:15those
- 00:22:17great let's move on
- 00:22:24next up adjectives so adjectives can
- 00:22:28describe nouns
- 00:22:31right
- 00:22:32for example we had
- 00:22:34a book
- 00:22:36an interesting book
- 00:22:38notice
- 00:22:39the ah
- 00:22:40from book becomes an because of the
- 00:22:43adjective beginning with a vowel sound
- 00:22:46an interesting book
- 00:22:48actually it's an exciting book
- 00:22:51um
- 00:22:52a delicious chocolate
- 00:22:57hmm
- 00:23:01a refreshing drink
- 00:23:06um it's the great thing about youtube
- 00:23:10teaching
- 00:23:11you can stuff yourself with chocolates
- 00:23:13in the classroom
- 00:23:15and notice the adjective comes before
- 00:23:18the noun
- 00:23:19a refreshing drink a refreshing drink
- 00:23:24when learning adjectives i think it's
- 00:23:26also a very good idea to learn the
- 00:23:29antonyms at the same time
- 00:23:32so an antonym
- 00:23:33is a word with the opposite
- 00:23:36meaning
- 00:23:37for example big small
- 00:23:39when you learn big learn small
- 00:23:42when you learn
- 00:23:43thick
- 00:23:44a thick book
- 00:23:46a thin book
- 00:23:48learn the antonyms
- 00:23:50great and we can also use adverbs to
- 00:23:54describe adjectives
- 00:23:56adverbs like really absolutely totally
- 00:24:00completely okay for example
- 00:24:03this is an exciting book
- 00:24:05this is a really exciting book
- 00:24:09oh
- 00:24:10that
- 00:24:11was an absolutely delicious chocolate
- 00:24:18great let's move on
- 00:24:26so thank you for watching so far um i
- 00:24:29thought we should have a break maybe
- 00:24:30have a refreshing drink because you've
- 00:24:33been seeing so much new grammar now then
- 00:24:38knowing grammar is one thing but what
- 00:24:40happens when you speak
- 00:24:42sometimes you forget you make mistakes
- 00:24:45and that is absolutely normal it's fine
- 00:24:49it's part of the learning process right
- 00:24:52now the thing is i
- 00:24:55always suggest start listening
- 00:24:58then loving and then repeating
- 00:25:01and then you can start reviewing the
- 00:25:03grammar like in this video and
- 00:25:05practicing more
- 00:25:07practicing is great you can practice on
- 00:25:09your own you can also practice with
- 00:25:11somebody else and if you can get
- 00:25:13feedback on your speaking
- 00:25:15even better
- 00:25:17a great place to do that i think is
- 00:25:20cambly
- 00:25:21cambly is an online platform where you

- 00:26:29right for you and then start practicing
- 00:26:32with cambly
- 00:26:34great we're gonna go back now
- 00:26:36to the refreshing drink and a bit more
- 00:26:38grammar
- 00:26:45next let's talk about pronouns
- 00:26:48as you can probably guess they replace
- 00:26:51nouns remember people places things
- 00:26:55and also they replace noun phrases do
- 00:26:58you remember the woman with blonde hair
- 00:27:00and glasses
- 00:27:01the noun phrase
- 00:27:03we use them
- 00:27:04really to avoid repetition
- 00:27:06right because you could say your car is
- 00:27:09lovely she likes your car
- 00:27:11but it's a bit repetitious
- 00:27:14it would be better to say your car is
- 00:27:16lovely she likes it
- 00:27:20there are different kinds of pronouns
- 00:27:22first of all subject pronouns where the
- 00:27:25pronoun replaces the noun that is a
- 00:27:28subject for example jack is a subject
- 00:27:32jack ate the chocolate
- 00:27:36the pronoun would be he ate the
- 00:27:39chocolate the other pronouns
- 00:27:41i ate the chocolate
- 00:27:43it was mine
- 00:27:44you ate the chocolate
- 00:27:47he she it ate the chocolate or we
- 00:27:51ate the chocolate you plural ate the
- 00:27:54chocolate all of you or they ate the
- 00:27:57chocolate
- 00:27:59secondly we've got object pronouns and
- 00:28:02this is where the pronoun replaces a
- 00:28:04noun that is an object for example she
- 00:28:08likes keith keith is the object of her
- 00:28:12liking she likes keith pronoun for keith
- 00:28:16is she likes him
- 00:28:18or she likes me
- 00:28:20the other pronouns she likes you
- 00:28:23she likes him she likes her she likes it
- 00:28:26she likes us
- 00:28:28she likes you
- 00:28:30all of you she likes them
- 00:28:34object pronouns
- 00:28:36thirdly we've got possessive pronouns
- 00:28:39and this is where the pronoun
- 00:28:41is is a possession for example
- 00:28:44my hat
- 00:28:46right
- 00:28:47my we can replace or my hat we replace
- 00:28:50with it's mine
- 00:28:54your hat it's yours
- 00:28:57his hat
- 00:28:58it's his
- 00:28:59her hat it's hers
- 00:29:03our hat it's ours
- 00:29:06their hat it's theirs
- 00:29:10notice of course
- 00:29:12with
- 00:29:13it's mine
- 00:29:14there is no noun because you're
- 00:29:16replacing the noun with the possessive
- 00:29:18pronoun
- 00:29:20great let's move on
- 00:29:27next we're going to talk about
- 00:29:29prepositions my oh my
- 00:29:32now prepositions are challenging because
- 00:29:34often they don't translate the same into
- 00:29:38your language and we use them
- 00:29:40differently
- 00:29:42so if you translate word for word you're
- 00:29:45probably going to make lots of mistakes
- 00:29:47with prepositions
- 00:29:48much more useful is to try and
- 00:29:51get the feeling of the preposition and
- 00:29:54what native speakers
- 00:29:56feel it represents or it means
- 00:30:00i'm going to try and do that with you
- 00:30:01today with three prepositions i'm not
- 00:30:05going to give you a big list of
- 00:30:06prepositions and a list of all the
- 00:30:08different uses
- 00:30:10that would be a waste of time you
- 00:30:12wouldn't use it you wouldn't follow it
- 00:30:14it wouldn't help you
- 00:30:15let's just try and zone in on three
- 00:30:18prepositions and give you a bit of a
- 00:30:21feeling of how we use them i've chosen
- 00:30:23at on
- 00:30:24in
- 00:30:25because i think these are three of the
- 00:30:27most important and most challenging ones
- 00:30:30and also they are quite closely
- 00:30:32connected
- 00:30:33so let's have a go wish me luck i wish
- 00:30:36you luck
- 00:30:38at
- 00:30:39is used that the feeling of a specific
- 00:30:43point a specific place or time right
- 00:30:46i live at 221 baker street really
- 00:30:51it's a specific point right a specific
- 00:30:53house
- 00:30:55i get up at six o'clock in the morning a
- 00:30:58specific time
- 00:31:01also at has the idea if you like of a
- 00:31:04space or a bubble
- 00:31:06if you imagine um
- 00:31:08for example i'm at home
- 00:31:11the idea of a feeling of a bubble or a
- 00:31:13space that you're in that bubble so at
- 00:31:16home you don't know if i'm in the
- 00:31:19kitchen in the bathroom
- 00:31:21in the study in the lounge
- 00:31:24but i'm in that bubble right i'm at home
- 00:31:27likewise at work
- 00:31:29but you don't know exactly if i'm at my
- 00:31:32desk in the toilet in the office
- 00:31:35at the beach
- 00:31:36right am i on the sand in the water
- 00:31:39in the coffee bar
- 00:31:41at the beach
- 00:31:42um at the cinema at the shops idea of a
- 00:31:46bubble right
- 00:31:48next
- 00:31:48on
- 00:31:50on
- 00:31:51can represent more
- 00:31:53well kind of touching a surface
- 00:31:56or a platform
- 00:31:58generally speaking talking about places
- 00:32:01right
- 00:32:01on the table the cup is on the table
- 00:32:05it's a surface
- 00:32:06on the wall there's a picture on the
- 00:32:08wall
- 00:32:09um
- 00:32:11on baker street i live on baker street
- 00:32:15you're on
- 00:32:16the surface of the street
- 00:32:19platforms well i'm on the internet
- 00:32:22i'm on the phone i'm on facebook
- 00:32:26they're all kind of platforms that
- 00:32:27you're on
- 00:32:29time
- 00:32:30on monday
- 00:32:32days of the week on monday on tuesday on
- 00:32:34the 5th of january which is also a day
- 00:32:38so again it's the idea of being
- 00:32:40on a kind of a platform if you think of
- 00:32:44all the days of the month as a platform
- 00:32:46you're on one day i'm on monday i
- 00:32:50i'm not on monday
- 00:32:53i work on monday i don't work on sunday
- 00:32:58next in in has the idea of being
- 00:33:02contained in a container like in a box
- 00:33:06clear right
- 00:33:08in manchester think of the city as a
- 00:33:11container you're inside i'm in
- 00:33:13manchester i'm in the car get in the car
- 00:33:16okay
- 00:33:18with time
- 00:33:19in july
- 00:33:21in august so think of the the month
- 00:33:24um there's a number of days and you're
- 00:33:26contained in that so in july could be
- 00:33:29one day in the month
- 00:33:31in summer
- 00:33:33idea of contained in the in the season
- 00:33:36and also in 2021
- 00:33:40right um the idea of being
- 00:33:42in the year there are many different
- 00:33:44parts of the year or months of the year
- 00:33:48so
- 00:33:49at on in there is a connection between
- 00:33:51them and i'd like to show it like this
- 00:33:53being at being very specific on being
- 00:33:57bigger and in being even bigger let me
- 00:34:01show you some examples right
- 00:34:04at six o'clock
- 00:34:05very specific
- 00:34:07on monday
- 00:34:08bigger in july
- 00:34:11bigger
- 00:34:12he lives at 221 baker street at very
- 00:34:16specific he lives on baker street bigger
- 00:34:19he lives in london even bigger at on
- 00:34:24in
- 00:34:25think of it like that
- 00:34:27i hope this helps you
- 00:34:28get a bit of a feeling
- 00:34:31for the different prepositions i should
- 00:34:33do a whole video about prepositions and
- 00:34:36the feelings
- 00:34:37let me work on that for now let's move
- 00:34:40on
- 00:34:46last but not least conjunctions
- 00:34:50conjunctions are words like and or
- 00:34:54but
- 00:34:54so because
- 00:34:56and these are words we use to join
- 00:35:00other words phrases and even clauses
- 00:35:05they're very very useful and they
- 00:35:07actually as you use them they help you
- 00:35:09build up longer sentences which helps
- 00:35:12build your fluency
- 00:35:15for example right we could say he eats a
- 00:35:18lot
- 00:35:19he is fat
- 00:35:21two
- 00:35:22sentences two clauses
- 00:35:25um we can use a conjunction
- 00:35:27different ones to connect them right he
- 00:35:29eats a lot so he is fat
- 00:35:33he eats a lot because he is fat
- 00:35:36he eats a lot
- 00:35:38and he is fat
- 00:35:40you see there are different
- 00:35:42possibilities the good thing to know as
- 00:35:45a beginner is that in spoken english we
- 00:35:48mostly use very simple conjunctions
- 00:35:52there are more complex ones you can
- 00:35:55learn as you go on but if you can master
- 00:35:58using the basic simple ones
- 00:36:01these are what we normally use when
- 00:36:03we're speaking
- 00:36:05but as i said
- 00:36:06practice building up
- 00:36:09your
- 00:36:09sentences using conjunctions
- 00:36:12and that really gives you more complex
- 00:36:15sentences if you're studying for ielts
- 00:36:17you'll know complex grammar is very
- 00:36:19important this is a great first step to
- 00:36:22mastering just joining your clauses
- 00:36:25together
- 00:36:26over a longer sentence
- 00:36:29excellent that's it
- 00:36:31let's see how well you have learnt
- 00:36:35we're going to move on to a little quiz
