- 00:02:21know I think I'm a friend I know I think
- 00:02:23we'll see how this goes no see look at
- 00:02:25the after after
- 00:02:26I'll meet okay so we're gonna dive
- 00:02:29straight it is alright let's go brighter
- 00:02:31so um when you think about yourself
- 00:02:35personally and professionally and we
- 00:02:37know that those um those two categories
- 00:02:39aren't so isolated right as we're
- 00:02:42professional women strong women not a
- 00:02:44lot of time to work we're hopefully
- 00:02:46following our passion we're doing
- 00:02:48something that we love to do and so we
- 00:02:50it feels personal sometimes right right
- 00:02:52okay so if we're just trying to stay as
- 00:02:55personal as possible what would you say
- 00:02:57has been one of your greatest or your
- 00:03:00greatest personal success personally I
- 00:03:04would have to say my daughter oh yeah I
- 00:03:05raised her on my own essentially since
- 00:03:07she was about six I would say I'm and
- 00:03:11her dad know go to Hawaii and yeah you
- 00:03:13know so kind of dropped off the face and
- 00:03:16she is a lovely 26 year old college
- 00:03:20graduate living her dream living her
- 00:03:23passion working at the Woodland Park Zoo
- 00:03:24got a degree in biology it's a nonprofit
- 00:03:26she does make a lot of money but she
- 00:03:28loves it she just posted on Instagram
- 00:03:30yesterday I can I fall in love with my
- 00:03:33job more and more every day it's like
- 00:03:36what a gift at 26 2015 5 and going oh I
- 00:03:41really actually like my job alive yeah
- 00:03:43right I mean there's
- 00:03:44but yeah well and it's a fantasy I think
- 00:03:47of any parent to hear their child or you
- 00:03:50know you have one right so she's the one
- 00:03:52yeah that you're counting on ya to find
- 00:03:55her happiness
- 00:03:55absolutely and she's like somehow hot
- 00:03:58that's crazy
- 00:03:59yeah she's found it and she she's
- 00:04:01working towards it it took her a little
- 00:04:02while yeah but so proud of her so that's
- 00:04:04that's such a huge accomplishment
- 00:04:05especially when you do it just by
- 00:04:08yourself yeah yeah yeah yeah because I
- 00:04:11mean I've talked with another guest I'm
- 00:04:14Jamie Goldberg and we we both had had
- 00:04:16experiences of co-parenting and then of
- 00:04:20single parenting and so for you the
- 00:04:22majority I mean at this point it's like
- 00:04:24you were you were the single parent
- 00:04:26after six or around six or after so yeah
- 00:04:29the big a lot of big years big things
- 00:04:31happen it definitely yeah
- 00:04:33okay I like that I like that um now and
- 00:04:37I got to see a picture of her just Becky
- 00:04:39post it cuz you to have birthdays that
- 00:04:42are just one way art okay which is we're
- 00:04:44talking about this but you're a Virgo
- 00:04:45yeah it's not a usual part of the
- 00:04:47interview but I can't help it yeah yeah
- 00:04:49alright yeah ok so because I was trying
- 00:04:52to pick the fuzzy yeah very very birth
- 00:04:55yes everything is all like that's a
- 00:04:57little crooked yeah yeah oh my god I
- 00:04:59don't this way yeah that's okay I like
- 00:05:01it about symmetry yeah it's good as an
- 00:05:03artist I appreciate that and you being
- 00:05:05one as well of course um okay so then
- 00:05:08personally still you know what we just
- 00:05:11thing has been one of your greatest or d
- 00:05:14greatest or one of your greatest
- 00:05:15failures personally oh gosh I would say
- 00:05:20well it's it's interesting because um
- 00:05:23it's kind of a professional thing that I
- 00:05:26did I started my own business about
- 00:05:28eight years ago and I lost my job and so
- 00:05:31I'm like oh my god I gotta do something
- 00:05:33he was during 2008 so just got back so
- 00:05:35it was it was brutal for everyone and um
- 00:05:37I lost my house my dog got run over by a
- 00:05:42car he'll run and killed my daughter had
- 00:05:45a seizure at Disneyland when her band
- 00:05:48was playing at a school trip
- 00:05:50and it just all happened at one
- 00:05:51yeah and so I took my 401k money a
- 00:05:54little bit that I had and I started my
- 00:05:56own business called jet say the girl and
- 00:05:58it was creams and lotions and body care
- 00:06:00and then I repurposed vintage jewelry
- 00:06:03that's why I built I had a friend helped
- 00:06:05me build a website in any e-commerce
- 00:06:06site and they did a grand opening and I
- 00:06:08had business cards and I spent all this
- 00:06:10like I still worked for a company doing
- 00:06:12product development so yeah just kind of
- 00:06:13my professional world and I didn't go
- 00:06:17out and sell it I think I was really
- 00:06:19depressed yeah and I was very
- 00:06:22overwhelmed but I didn't do the I didn't
- 00:06:23do the work yeah I mean I look back in
- 00:06:25it now I'm like I failed at that I mean
- 00:06:27I failed I needed to knock on doors and
- 00:06:29say look I had this great product when
- 00:06:30you carried in your store is great stuff
- 00:06:32I thought that I'll just build this
- 00:06:34website you know calm I know better than
- 00:06:36that yeah so I failed myself and I feel
- 00:06:38like I failed my family a little bit
- 00:06:40yeah no I just feeling I just when
- 00:06:43you're saying it I know now as a
- 00:06:44business owner once again it's like you
- 00:06:45really have to put the time in and the
- 00:06:47work in and you can't just expect it to
- 00:06:49happen right and I expected it to happen
- 00:06:52I'm not sure what I expected but I
- 00:06:54really feel that that and then I also
- 00:06:55lost my 401 K right do you know every
- 00:06:58yeah yeah I like in pretty much every
- 00:07:00arena I mean I I can think of one and
- 00:07:03that wasn't that wasn't mentioned but in
- 00:07:05every other arena you you had a lot at
- 00:07:08stake yeah and then too and I really can
- 00:07:11understand really relate to and
- 00:07:13understand that because one of the
- 00:07:17things I started a business in 2005 and
- 00:07:20downsized it in 2009 called red in
- 00:07:23downtown Seattle was of a big venture
- 00:07:24and one of the things that I didn't
- 00:07:27think about I knew that I wanted to
- 00:07:31create this I knew
- 00:07:32the industry I knew that I loved it and
- 00:07:34would love the feeling but what I didn't
- 00:07:36think about is I didn't think about the
- 00:07:38longevity just let's have a little aside
- 00:07:42for all the folks telling them that
- 00:07:43whenever you come to Georgetown you're
- 00:07:45gonna hear about it trade ya dirt
- 00:07:48anymore
- 00:07:48I know you don't even notice when jets
- 00:07:51fly directly over your head and
- 00:07:52everybody slipped that stuff from here
- 00:07:54it's like oh my god and I'm just like oh
- 00:07:56yeah okay it's always funny
- 00:08:00I know it's kind of and it's fun I
- 00:08:01actually really like that it's the
- 00:08:02industrial feel it and it's why it's
- 00:08:04such a popular haven for artists and for
- 00:08:07art going people right now so anyway
- 00:08:09okay so back to just I did not think of
- 00:08:14the longevity and what it was going to
- 00:08:16take to run a large business for a long
- 00:08:19period of time and in my mind I just
- 00:08:22loved all the pieces of it so I didn't
- 00:08:24think about that
- 00:08:26and therefore I wasn't planning for ten
- 00:08:30years from now I just thought it's gonna
- 00:08:31work right right so I'm just saying this
- 00:08:34in relation to someone risking
- 00:08:36everything
- 00:08:37same same thing so I think that one of
- 00:08:40the the woman who actually introduced us
- 00:08:42I think probably knew a little bit about
- 00:08:45what we were like and what our lives
- 00:08:47right similar backgrounds yeah so funny
- 00:08:49okay so so yes I can very much
- 00:08:53understand that and it's it's what makes
- 00:08:55me more intrigued by you and appreciate
- 00:08:57you in the capacity that I've come to
- 00:09:00know you just recently hearing this too
- 00:09:04so and that's what I want other people
- 00:09:05to know about you like the woman the
- 00:09:08Patti right here is here I am women okay
- 00:09:10so um so then if we're talking about
- 00:09:13professionally and again you know we
- 00:09:15know this is personal and professional
- 00:09:16okay we're talking about professionally
- 00:09:18so what would you say has been one of
- 00:09:20your greatest failures professionally
- 00:09:22just as straight professional as you can
- 00:09:24I think that I've lost myself before in
- 00:09:29my job and compromised
- 00:09:32and to me that's that's failing myself
- 00:09:35yeah and you're never successful when
- 00:09:37you're not yourself and you try to be
- 00:09:39something that you think other people
- 00:09:41want you to be and that just not you
- 00:09:43here in the wrong place
- 00:09:44yeah you're with the wrong people yep
- 00:09:46and you constantly feel berated and
- 00:09:49attacked but you did it to yourself
- 00:09:51because I've said self-sabotage before -
- 00:09:54yeah and then overcompensate it
- 00:09:57organ-like to needy or like I don't like
- 00:09:59me you should like me right
- 00:10:01don't you like me and it's like gross
- 00:10:03nobody likes you when you do that nobody
- 00:10:05wants that it's the same thing in the
- 00:10:07dating world others do you like you
- 00:10:10think I'm cute - here can we go out
- 00:10:12again yeah yeah no you just horribly me
- 00:10:15and it we've all done it we have done it
- 00:10:17and it and it's like God you know when
- 00:10:20it takes you so long to figure this
- 00:10:22out yes you can you can take it we're
- 00:10:26swearing no I do the other by the other
- 00:10:30effort I love way more than the failure
- 00:10:32effort is you know reaction I think of
- 00:10:34all I'm smoking right now
- 00:10:37yes okay so we you're absolutely right
- 00:10:40we've all been there yeah but all been
- 00:10:41in that place in one way or another
- 00:10:43small or large little ways big way right
- 00:10:46you feel it you feel in your gut you
- 00:10:48know it's happening and you can't stop
- 00:10:50yourself when yourself fire like you
- 00:10:52hear the words coming out of your mouth
- 00:10:53and like stop talking stop talking stop
- 00:10:56talking you're not stop talking you're
- 00:10:57still talking oh my god shut up and it's
- 00:11:00like yeah get some self-control woman
- 00:11:03and still I you know what but still to
- 00:11:05this day I still have kind of that
- 00:11:06person yeah
- 00:11:07and sometimes it's just like yeah shut
- 00:11:09up I mean yeah I get it I get it and we
- 00:11:14all do actually I mean so yeah okay
- 00:11:17so I that's a profession so when you're
- 00:11:19in a corporate environment no not
- 00:11:21usually the best idea to speak you're
- 00:11:23exactly what you think you know here
- 00:11:25it's a little different because it's
- 00:11:27like oh that's right
- 00:11:28my gallery was like yeah yeah it's my
- 00:11:30kid yeah yeah yeah do you want to know
- 00:11:33that I want um
- 00:11:34when I was probably 22 I went into what
- 00:11:37we called the the the coffee table chats
- 00:11:41you know built after the
- 00:11:43many weights too old for a lot of people
- 00:11:45but I'm with Jeanne Juarez the man yet
- 00:11:48who I worked for a long time are your
- 00:11:50GIS and we didn't even know that when we
- 00:11:52first met okay so I'm sitting at a table
- 00:11:54with Jeanne Juarez the man who is very
- 00:11:57elegant and in the way that he thinks of
- 00:12:00his business very Virgo in a certain way
- 00:12:03meaning you know very particular and I
- 00:12:05knew this and I have known him since I
- 00:12:07was 17
- 00:12:08working for the Bellevue um so on so
- 00:12:11this is going to a place that is good in
- 00:12:13that I'm sitting there as a 23 year old
- 00:12:15college snot right and he's at the table
- 00:12:19this man who's built an empire of a
- 00:12:21business unparalleled in this area
- 00:12:23definitely a lot of people are around
- 00:12:25seasoned professionals and we're there
- 00:12:28to talk about what we could do to
- 00:12:30improve the business and I pull out a
- 00:12:32bunch of bic pen caps a whole host of
- 00:12:36them and I throw them toss them out it
- 00:12:39would great ceremony on the table and I
- 00:12:42say well we should really be recycling
- 00:12:44these that was your concert that with it
- 00:12:46and he I mean when I think back about it
- 00:12:49I'm like what in the like if and I've
- 00:12:52had that happen to me
- 00:12:53I mean I've been in his shoes and read
- 00:12:55and and think okay I can't believe that
- 00:12:58I did that and I can't believe that I
- 00:13:00thought that that was the biggest deal
- 00:13:02that we had to talk about that was gonna
- 00:13:04make business by your level of
- 00:13:05experience right life experience and and
- 00:13:08like I have this amazing idea
- 00:13:11yeah we can we're gonna love it yeah
- 00:13:12we're gonna use a different pen me this
- 00:13:14is here you should have a solution I
- 00:13:16just dumped them all out there and he's
- 00:13:18like I turn in your defense you were a
- 00:13:21forefront of recycling in McCormick's
- 00:13:24recycled plastics right yeah because it
- 00:13:27was like the early 50s meeting edged up
- 00:13:29late 60s maybe probably no I don't know
- 00:13:33you know I don't mind those things
- 00:13:34anymore like a desert age you don't mind
- 00:13:36what someone makes photos
- 00:13:38how are but for a while in you're in
- 00:13:40your mid-30s you really do perfect in
- 00:13:42the mid-40s yeah even yeah okay all
- 00:13:45right okay so I like this this is button
- 00:13:47alright so um in terms of friends we are
- 00:13:51so far yeah I don't know it's touchy and
- 00:13:53you did stand up for me you know you
- 00:13:55made me feel better about my pen cap
- 00:13:57dropping okay so so when you think about
- 00:14:00your your professional life still right
- 00:14:02and then then talk to me just a little
- 00:14:05bit more about and I want to kind of in
- 00:14:08this case for you special for you since
- 00:14:10we're friends know I'm friends with in
- 00:14:12front of the most people to some degree
- 00:14:14so so talk to me a little about what you
- 00:14:18want to say about your professional
- 00:14:20career in terms of failures successes
- 00:14:23just to kind of because you've had quite
- 00:14:25a grand career huge so I don't a lot of
- 00:14:28stuff yes so is if there is something
- 00:14:31that you could say that would explain a
- 00:14:34little bit more in your words about what
- 00:14:36has been important to this day about
- 00:14:39your professional career what would be
- 00:14:41the most important thing I would say
- 00:14:45everything that I've gleaned from my
- 00:14:48global travels yeah from my success as I
- 00:14:51was a product developer for a cosmetic
- 00:14:53company and that's maybe 14 whereas they
- 00:14:55did the product development for their
- 00:14:57private label lines yeah and it was kind
- 00:14:59of my first private label gig I sort of
- 00:15:02fancied my vernacular then I post myself
- 00:15:07on my resume because that's really what
- 00:15:08I wanted to get into yeah I started out
- 00:15:10as a counter girl in cosmetics and you
- 00:15:13know a smart girl you know and I'm a
- 00:15:15makeup artist and then it just evolved
- 00:15:17into that then I worked for Sebastian
- 00:15:18haircare and that was very glamorous and
- 00:15:20and gene where's carried Sebastian a
- 00:15:22very long time back in the day and so I
- 00:15:25had this kind of glamorous cosmetic
- 00:15:27career and I couldn't travel anymore
- 00:15:31because my daughter yeah and so I had to
- 00:15:34because I was traveling all over and for
- 00:15:37business and so I got that job at you
- 00:15:40whereas and I kind of fudged my mind
- 00:15:41there was a mean girl and in my mom's my
- 00:15:44mom and I like best friends and my mom
- 00:15:45goes why is it every job you have
- 00:15:47there's a mean girl that picks on you
- 00:15:48and I got I don't know I don't know I
- 00:15:50want to be good like every job I've ever
- 00:15:55done it there's always someone even here
- 00:15:56in the gallery yeah in my business with
- 00:15:59now I need to have an artist all over
- 00:16:01the age of 50 and they're still you're
- 00:16:04still hot yeah just don't happen in that
- 00:16:06looking at me it's too much god it's
- 00:16:08never gonna end
- 00:16:09so you know it's it's getting over the
- 00:16:12whole mean girl thing and stop taking it
- 00:16:13personally yeah and taking all of those
- 00:16:16experiences that I've done yeah and
- 00:16:18applying them to what I'm doing now yeah
- 00:16:21and if I miss some the whole my part so
- 00:16:24I do that happen but some of your parts
- 00:16:25yes and I've had a very illustrious
- 00:16:29career one of one of my best
- 00:16:32accomplishments or proudest moments was
- 00:16:34Oprah Winfrey picked one of my products
- 00:16:36is her favorite thing for holiday okay
- 00:16:39and it was really awesome and there was
- 00:16:41this nail polish collection I did for
- 00:16:43this local beauty company here and I got
- 00:16:45to name I named all the colors after my
- 00:16:47family
- 00:16:48oh just kind of fun yeah what was one of
- 00:16:51the name
- 00:16:51well there's Camille there was a patty
- 00:16:53so what can watch my daughter my mom
- 00:16:55Barbara yeah so it was really fun that I
- 00:16:57got to it my nos Christine and yeah did
- 00:17:00Oprah know that just a quick aside no
- 00:17:02curious okay okay that's rare because
- 00:17:03it's such a sweet thing like I know yeah
- 00:17:05so it's like my own personal little
- 00:17:07touch to it that you know that only my
- 00:17:09friends and family knew and I'm so that
- 00:17:13was really exciting for me and then with
- 00:17:16that same company won a huge award for
- 00:17:18the best indie brand and although the
- 00:17:21CEO takes all the credit it's really
- 00:17:23product development yeah that made the
- 00:17:25products that made it cool that maybe
- 00:17:27people want to buy it yeah so there's a
- 00:17:30lot of pressure in product development
- 00:17:30yeah and so like the last gig I had
- 00:17:34it was a half a billion dollar company
- 00:17:36mmm-hmm and if you were making products
- 00:17:39and they don't sell yeah big trouble
- 00:17:41yeah it's sort of like where the rubber
- 00:17:43meets the road pretty much it kind of
- 00:17:46goes right back yeah yeah cuz then the
- 00:17:48sales guys or gals will say to you well
- 00:17:50you know if you made good product it
- 00:17:51went this so hard to sell right so it's
- 00:17:53on its own you could tell okay then you
- 00:17:56can sell these products right right how
- 00:17:59about that but yeah it was it was all my
- 00:18:01shoulders and so in with that job I was
- 00:18:04a director and then I was traveling all
- 00:18:06over the world again like yeah I was
- 00:18:07proud I'm going to Paris go to Milan I'm
- 00:18:09going to China and council Fanti right
- 00:18:11and it sounds fancy it's not that
- 00:18:13glamorous but I bet it's like it's not a
- 00:18:15healthy feeling stuff it's pretty cool
- 00:18:17I'm going to Paris for work early yeah
- 00:18:19important axis yeah oh you heard me on
- 00:18:22again all right but when I went to shins
- 00:18:24into the factory and stay in a dorm yeah
- 00:18:26it wasn't so fancy yeah the middle yeah
- 00:18:29I don't like that that's okay I mean I'm
- 00:18:32in dorm food yeah oh geez anyway I
- 00:18:35digress
- 00:18:35I couldn't swarm so but they let
- 00:18:37everybody go over the age of 50 within
- 00:18:38that company for the most part oh and I
- 00:18:40was living in LA at the time yeah and
- 00:18:42I'd really miss yellow I've been down
- 00:18:44there three and a half years and my
- 00:18:46boyfriend I just packed it up and came
- 00:18:48back to Seattle and when I got back here
- 00:18:51there was no jobs for me at 53 yeah and
- 00:18:54I really felt the ageism in particular
- 00:18:57here in in Seattle with the youth driven
- 00:19:00tech culture yeah and I think it's like
- 00:19:02that for a lot of people in San
- 00:19:03Francisco to protect towns yeah and it
- 00:19:06was palpable I couldn't even get any
- 00:19:07Rhino Wow
- 00:19:08yeah a resume I have a person favorite
- 00:19:10things I mean come on wouldn't wait a
- 00:19:12minute right it's like that's year yeah
- 00:19:15and nothing nothing and so I got this
- 00:19:18idea to do my art and I hadn't done art
- 00:19:20for 25 years I went to Cornish yeah and
- 00:19:22I got my art degree but I had a baby
- 00:19:24yeah yeah someone had to work how to put
- 00:19:27that on hold it down hold and
- 00:19:29I got this idea to do this art and then
- 00:19:32I a friend of mine owns the West five
- 00:19:34and what Seattle yeah that cute little
- 00:19:35breast yacht and you'll psyche hanger
- 00:19:37right here and I did a nice look like 15
- 00:19:39pieces
- 00:19:39Oh a month so that gave you that so that
- 00:19:42gave me some confidence in that because
- 00:19:44a lot of artists we it's it's like
- 00:19:47actors and writers and it's confident
- 00:19:49yeah I know it's you have to give
- 00:19:51yourself a pep talk every single day
- 00:19:53because it's your soul yeah it's just
- 00:19:56it's just your insides it's not a big
- 00:19:58deal nothing you say no okay
- 00:20:01but you have to get it thick skin and
- 00:20:03since I've I've been doing products and
- 00:20:06launching things and have people go what
- 00:20:08the hell right it's dumb yeah you know
- 00:20:10when people say there are no dumb
- 00:20:12questions and yeah they're wrong
- 00:20:13yeah yeah I'm actually I mean I think
- 00:20:16that you you really speak to something
- 00:20:18that that definitely because you've got
- 00:20:21this gallery there are artists who are
- 00:20:22coming to you and it and frankly it's
- 00:20:24like you know I you and I met because
- 00:20:26I'm also an artist and so a painter
- 00:20:28animus thank you happens to be right
- 00:20:30here in folks it's a gallery located
- 00:20:3255:19 airport myself Georgetown oh
- 00:20:35you're not gonna make the same mistake
- 00:20:36that you did with your first business is
- 00:20:39the point you know that yes it's like
- 00:20:41come on down okay so we'll get to that
- 00:20:43too so so one um so one of the things
- 00:20:48when we think about like being artist
- 00:20:50we've got you've got this gallery you're
- 00:20:52the you're the kind of figurehead of the
- 00:20:54gallery as well as the art is I just
- 00:20:57saying not because anyone who comes in
- 00:20:59they meet with you technically right
- 00:21:01they go through you you are the
- 00:21:03gatekeeper you are the curator and so
- 00:21:06when people come into this gallery it's
- 00:21:09not that it's a collective that has not
- 00:21:12been curated and I feel like I want to
- 00:21:14say that because the other part of what
- 00:21:19happens when you're the business owner
- 00:21:21when you've got a lot of people who
- 00:21:22you're working with is that you um you
- 00:21:25you're wearing a lot of hats and there's
- 00:21:27a there's a risk and like we were
- 00:21:30I came out earlier there can be this
- 00:21:32sense of like oh who who likes me who do
- 00:21:35I like right and there are lots of
- 00:21:37things that go on
- 00:21:38so for you right now if you think about
- 00:21:43yourself right and what we've talked
- 00:21:46about and this first question is what
- 00:21:49would you say in your relationship with
- 00:21:52yourself is like right now like so right
- 00:21:55now as we sit here how is your
- 00:21:57relationship with yourself better than
- 00:21:59it's ever been in my entire life
- 00:22:01yeah I think that it took it was such a
- 00:22:04hard road yeah and a lot of ups and
- 00:22:07downs a lot of self-doubt and and just
- 00:22:12being a survivor yeah
- 00:22:14and an entrepreneurial spirit where it's
- 00:22:16like I'll just okay I'll do that now
- 00:22:17yeah I mean I worked at Starbucks
- 00:22:19designing their tumblers yeah yeah I
- 00:22:21product irrelevance like sure I might do
- 00:22:24that
- 00:22:24yeah not I can do that I was the
- 00:22:26sculpting major I know I work with
- 00:22:27metals and shapes and colors and I don't
- 00:22:29I can do it I could sure pick me ready
- 00:22:32you know I've done some really
- 00:22:33interesting things but all of them have
- 00:22:35kind of had to do with retail consumer
- 00:22:38merchandising and marketing and design
- 00:22:40right so with all that some of
- 00:22:42experience that I've been doing since I
- 00:22:44was my first job and maybe it was I was
- 00:22:4719 and we're downwards and nor day or
- 00:22:49driver at the Elizabeth Arden salon but
- 00:22:51and I was when I had my vote such person
- 00:22:53right my back and there's a paper resume
- 00:22:56you were super young yeah the-- and I
- 00:22:57didn't I don't think I had a resume
- 00:22:59right worked at the skate key and I
- 00:23:01Godfather's Pizza remember me - yeah um
- 00:23:03in a while so I just went down and I was
- 00:23:06I moved down there and my dad was living
- 00:23:08down there my parents had gotten
- 00:23:10divorced and I said I go I think I'm
- 00:23:12gonna work in retail yeah I was
- 00:23:13referring to college he's like okay well
- 00:23:15you better go get yourself a job do it
- 00:23:17because where you gonna go and I got I
- 00:23:18think I'm not gonna Rodeo Drive he's
- 00:23:20like good shot you're okay well if they
- 00:23:23were over it to this out I go in there
- 00:23:25and it was just like pretty woman but
- 00:23:26know that enjoy your Roberts but there
- 00:23:28we go hi I was waiting for you Dobbs and
- 00:23:30they're like no you don't know what's
- 00:23:36going on yeah yeah so
- 00:23:38I got a job though yeah but the rest but
- 00:23:41it's being a risk-taker since I was a
- 00:23:44kid
- 00:23:45yeah I'm sorry that's just who I am yeah
- 00:23:47and you just have to keep going yeah and
- 00:23:49you know things get hard yeah you know
- 00:23:51if I've had failed marriages and it's
- 00:23:53like things are things get party you
- 00:23:55have to keep going and now that I'm
- 00:23:57working with 27 artists and I'm up right
- 00:24:00now visual artists we have some
- 00:24:01musicians and writers as well poets the
- 00:24:05people that I work with now yeah have
- 00:24:07all had a life like that right you know
- 00:24:10different yeah some summer mom's right
- 00:24:13and some our school teachers are an
- 00:24:15environmental scientist yeah there's a
- 00:24:18retired vice president of tech guy right
- 00:24:20there's you know there's like this these
- 00:24:23sculptures back here from a
- 00:24:24schoolteacher right yeah it's so it's
- 00:24:27yeah then the Heather Sadler on these
- 00:24:28beautiful paintings back here from Jane
- 00:24:30communis who's been a famous artist in
- 00:24:33New York and she's now living here with
- 00:24:35her daughter-in-law and son along and I
- 00:24:38got to talk with her yeah she's pretty
- 00:24:40amazing it was amazing
- 00:24:41yeah and she's a survivor she's survivor
- 00:24:43of spine cancer yeah yeah and you're
- 00:24:46writing like what yeah when we get to
- 00:24:48this point like we all have our stories
- 00:24:50and so finding out for me like I
- 00:24:52especially love to find out well how you
- 00:24:54know the question I asked you how would
- 00:24:56your relationship with yourself and I
- 00:24:58enjoyed hearing what what that looks
- 00:25:01like for people at different ages and so
- 00:25:03thinking about as well what would you
- 00:25:07say if if there was something what could
- 00:25:10make someone consider you at this point
- 00:25:12in your life and envy you know the the
- 00:25:14that interviews with friends and enemies
- 00:25:16like what could what might someone see
- 00:25:20in you or think about that might make
- 00:25:22them consider you an enemy um not
- 00:25:25everybody gets in the gallery yeah and I
- 00:25:27had I had a real pissing match with
- 00:25:29somebody that I didn't think that it
- 00:25:32their work was the quality that's hard
- 00:25:34to tell somebody yeah and you know in
- 00:25:36the way I told her that I
- 00:25:38that her work was I liked that she was
- 00:25:40that she technically was a good artist
- 00:25:42yeah but her subject matter wasn't right
- 00:25:43for my gallery yeah and I said you know
- 00:25:45bring something else in right and it she
- 00:25:47got really mad yeah I made she told a
- 00:25:49friend of a friend and then he just
- 00:25:51ripped me like how dare you who do you
- 00:25:54think you are
- 00:25:55what do you think this is and and I'm
- 00:25:57like well it's kind of my my rules my
- 00:26:00gallery my real type here and here it's
- 00:26:01not it's not little unhitch and I wrote
- 00:26:03that was this email or and I wrote
- 00:26:05Jackie Sissel Italy yeah everybody that
- 00:26:07tries out this I make the team sorry
- 00:26:10that's how how life works not everybody
- 00:26:11gets a trophy yeah you know yeah people
- 00:26:14that raise their kids that way big
- 00:26:15mistake because not everybody gets
- 00:26:17trophy yeah I'm not everybody wins and
- 00:26:18you know and it wasn't no it was not
- 00:26:21right now exactly yeah that really took
- 00:26:23it hard and I think that that those are
- 00:26:24the people that think that I they have
- 00:26:26an enemy that could mean right and it's
- 00:26:28like you know what it's it's not
- 00:26:30personal
- 00:26:31yeah it is I didn't use yeah well and
- 00:26:35also what I've noticed to just didn't I
- 00:26:37mean not you don't need me to be be
- 00:26:40defending you but I think that most most
- 00:26:44business owners you know when it's
- 00:26:47essentially like hiring someone are not
- 00:26:49hiring someone it's that you think that
- 00:26:51they're the right fit for what is going
- 00:26:53on it's not personal it's about the
- 00:26:55business and you're making a business
- 00:26:56decision and so that is something
- 00:26:59because of what we talked about when
- 00:27:00people are bringing their art but quite
- 00:27:04honestly when you're when you're
- 00:27:06applying for a job you're bringing
- 00:27:08yourself so it's all serious and we all
- 00:27:10have to step up I remember when you and
- 00:27:12I first talked and I said listen patty
- 00:27:14I'm love the gallery this is a gallery
- 00:27:16I'd like to show in however it's not my
- 00:27:19first rodeo and you're not gonna hurt my
- 00:27:21feelings inside I'm like of course
- 00:27:23you're gonna hurt my feelings but not
- 00:27:24you're not gonna hurt my feeling crap
- 00:27:26passionate yet and you're not gonna make
- 00:27:28me think I'm not a good artist and I'm
- 00:27:30I've heard no before and I've heard yes
- 00:27:34before but I choose you you know what I
- 00:27:36mean it was like I want to come right
- 00:27:38fully forward when I'm doing a thing
- 00:27:40like with the interviews it's like I
- 00:27:42want to interview people I want to find
- 00:27:43things out so this is a great question
- 00:27:47of corollary
- 00:27:48question is what would make someone
- 00:27:50consider you a friend
- 00:27:53I think that I'm extremely supportive
- 00:27:55yeah and I'm honest and you always know
- 00:27:57where you stand with me that's what my
- 00:27:58girlfriend would say to me yeah it's
- 00:28:00like well there's no gray with Patti but
- 00:28:05it's not it's ever mean I'm not never
- 00:28:07know it's never mean-spirited a purpose
- 00:28:09that intention I've never the intention
- 00:28:11you never mean and the intention is
- 00:28:12always just like being honest yeah being
- 00:28:16a friend and being a communicator yeah
- 00:28:19and I think that that's that people know
- 00:28:22when we're friends yeah it's not a
- 00:28:25secret you're like um just ask them just
- 00:28:29ask someone they'll tell you my friend
- 00:28:31or not no but yeah I know I see that I
- 00:28:33can see that and you know sometimes we a
- 00:28:36good friend of mine shared with me once
- 00:28:38and and he said you know something about
- 00:28:41you is that your your strengths I think
- 00:28:45that your strengths that you consider
- 00:28:47your strengths are really your
- 00:28:47weaknesses and he was just telling me
- 00:28:49that it's personally yeah and I think
- 00:28:50that your weaknesses are actually your
- 00:28:52strengths and it's funny because one of
- 00:28:53the things that I think of when I think
- 00:28:55of you because I've gotten to see you in
- 00:28:57action business-wise is that I feel like
- 00:29:00I don't normally do this in the
- 00:29:01interview but I feel like you you have a
- 00:29:04very soft gentle heart and I feel like
- 00:29:09you people with soft gentle hearts are
- 00:29:13very they're they're they have to build
- 00:29:17they have to build a wall in order to be
- 00:29:20okay in that because then they get to
- 00:29:24still allow their soft heart with
- 00:29:26certain people because it's so soft and
- 00:29:28I mean that's what I think you know yeah
- 00:29:31yeah I really do see that so um okay I
- 00:29:35like this alright now we get to move
- 00:29:39into the kind of snappy I know I know so
- 00:29:43get ready so so this is the I know we
- 00:29:47should put our love but now we don't
- 00:29:48need
- 00:29:48okay so I'm grabbing my little sheet
- 00:29:50here because I'm older and I can't
- 00:29:51remember 20 questions you don't need
- 00:29:54them coz I write big I'm it for myself I
- 00:29:56know myself okay so this is the 20 20
- 00:30:00questions 21 questions and I write these
- 00:30:02each morning for the guests I'm
- 00:30:04interviewing so these are specifically
- 00:30:05for you and the attackers here okay
- 00:30:08so best you can do one-word answers okay
- 00:30:11okay

- 00:31:47parents and so what do you think they
- 00:31:50valued most

- 00:34:15okay when you were little what did you
- 00:34:18want to be when you grew up a waitress I
- 00:34:22loved it
- 00:34:23I had a cousin who wanted to be a hooker
- 00:34:34okay oh boy it's for mortified I bet
- 00:34:37well yeah but max just wrote he wants to
- 00:34:40be a mechanic which is not a bad thing
- 00:34:43it's just that when you're a little kid
- 00:34:44you don't have a sense of like what this
- 00:34:47means you just know I want to be this
- 00:34:49I just might serve people I know
- 00:34:51actually it was because we're at one of
- 00:34:52those buffet thanks yeah and they had
- 00:34:55like the ice cream yeah and I got to go
- 00:34:58up and like serve my family know their
- 00:35:00waters and I just thought it was so nice
- 00:35:03oh it was love it didn't and I were just
- 00:35:06the snapper girl at the skate King when
- 00:35:07I was 15 and I don't want to do this
- 00:35:09this is brutal
- 00:35:12yeah I did it in college too but but
- 00:35:14yeah yeah well once you get good at it
- 00:35:15you know yeah you can exit I'll carry
- 00:35:17you through yeah it was like the golden
- 00:35:19handcuffs I think everybody should have
- 00:35:21to wait tables in their lifetime I was
- 00:35:23at Chuck E Cheese birthday hostess loved
- 00:35:25it
- 00:35:25what high school why I loved it Wow
- 00:35:27loved it I got to announce things fun
- 00:35:30the pizza time players are there I got
- 00:35:32to bring birthday cake I'm not kidding
- 00:35:34you I loved it okay okay perfect now we
- 00:35:41get to go to the next part of our
- 00:35:44interview which is the drink ritual so
- 00:35:45this is a time when we get to see a
- 00:35:48little microcosm of you of why you
- 00:35:50choose a drink and
- 00:35:52and then I share the drink I get a toast
- 00:35:56and so I can't wait okay so um we will
- 00:35:59take a brief respite and let you concoct
- 00:36:03your drink all right
- 00:36:05stay tuned
- 00:36:08[Music]
- 00:36:15okay this is what might be the most
- 00:36:19beautiful drink I have enjoyed on the
- 00:36:23show and I love beauty so Patti tell us
- 00:36:28about the drink okay well I was a
- 00:36:30bartender in college should we're
- 00:36:32excited yes I also am Pete oh so I don't
- 00:36:36okay I don't either to my fans
- 00:36:39Aikido yeah it's it's not it's good type
- 00:36:42of Jitsu I'm which what you say I try to
- 00:36:46leave it a carb-free lifestyle because
- 00:36:47it being over 50 yeah and postmenopausal
- 00:36:49to keep off that 15 to 20 pounds it just
- 00:36:52wants to hang out with me I got it
- 00:36:54I gotta move we gotta straight out yeah
- 00:36:56but I love a margarita yeah micrometers
- 00:36:58full of carbs because it's full of sugar
- 00:36:59so I created this margarita it's kind of
- 00:37:03its kind of a ripoff from Skinnygirl
- 00:37:07line but this is so much better
- 00:37:08I call it slender lady bethenny frankel
- 00:37:14up skinny girl will studio if you even
- 00:37:16talk about it so what it is is it's
- 00:37:18fresh-squeezed lime okay one
- 00:37:21fresh-squeezed tangerine for two drinks
- 00:37:23and stevia okay with a kosher salt room
- 00:37:27we're weird largest research just cuz I
- 00:37:29like the texture I do too yeah I'm
- 00:37:31pretty but that's what it is so it's
- 00:37:33very simple
- 00:37:34and in a Buena and glad a martini glass
- 00:37:36um gorgeous
- 00:37:38so yeah shaken very hard huh yeah I get
- 00:37:41I got to see the preparation than mine
- 00:37:43and it was really I was telling me that
- 00:37:45if you are over 50 again I know I keep
- 00:37:47talking about that but when you shake a
- 00:37:49margarita wear long sleeves because the
- 00:37:50arm thing nobody wants to see that
- 00:37:52whatever makes you a little wheel that's
- 00:37:54not good I try to lift those weights but
- 00:37:56it doesn't it doesn't it just doesn't in
- 00:37:58your matter okay cheers to you too sir
- 00:38:01Cheers Oh smells really good I have to
- 00:38:08get that mmm mmm mmm okay here's what I
- 00:38:15like the texture of the salt it's a nice
- 00:38:19coarse grain mmm and then there's I
- 00:38:23really am NOT a fan of a sweet drink
- 00:38:24visit
- 00:38:25me so it is it's got a tart let's make
- 00:38:28my mouth water peel its up mmm
- 00:38:31it's got its got tartness but it also
- 00:38:34has smoothness and so it's not that kind
- 00:38:38of fake tart
- 00:38:39tell me what I'm talking about do like
- 00:38:41seven yeah yeah yeah oh this is
- 00:38:43delicious
- 00:38:44okay I have to have another little step
- 00:38:45cheers oh okay
- 00:38:48I am good tequila patron silver yeah
- 00:38:50very nice okay
- 00:38:52do you feel like you can you can do the
- 00:38:54end of our interview holding your yeah
- 00:38:56things mean we're probably good right
- 00:38:57we'll see if that when we're in our
- 00:38:59fifties it's not my mom's drink okay so
- 00:39:08at the end of the interview I always ask
- 00:39:10and I want to know because we've you
- 00:39:13know with you and with everyone mostly
- 00:39:15we talk about personal we talk about
- 00:39:18professional and at the end what I want
- 00:39:21to know is is there something that you
- 00:39:24would like to promote now it can be
- 00:39:27anything that you want so what would you
- 00:39:29like to promote I would like to let
- 00:39:32everyone know that we just got
- 00:39:34sponsorship from a company called
- 00:39:35Shunpike okay sponsors artists groups so
- 00:39:38there were a 501c3 sponsored I just take
- 00:39:41me a while
- 00:39:42it took me you know some business plan
- 00:39:44writing and some budget writing and
- 00:39:45which is kind of out of my wheelhouse
- 00:39:47since the paper well it took a lot of
- 00:39:49paperwork but it's budgeting I'm an art
- 00:39:51I'm an art girl I'm a marketing girl
- 00:39:52yeah I mean I had to have a marketing
- 00:39:53budget but this is a little different
- 00:39:55for you but we did get approved and we
- 00:39:58will be able to accept tax-deductible
- 00:40:00donations which in turn will allow us as
- 00:40:03a community
- 00:40:04yep to do more community outreach to
- 00:40:06people over 50 okay to provide space for
- 00:40:08artists that don't have a lot of income
- 00:40:10that are over 50 that want to show yeah
- 00:40:12- and have studio time yeah I'm gonna be
- 00:40:16able to do one-person shows we'll be
- 00:40:18able to
- 00:40:18about it I want to work with agencies
- 00:40:21that help people every cue like meals on
- 00:40:23wheels
- 00:40:23yeah and Providence Mount Saint Vincent
- 00:40:26does a lot for ya elderly uncompensated
- 00:40:29elderly care yeah you know there's a lot
- 00:40:31done for a lot of other groups and I
- 00:40:33feel like the elderly and older is a
- 00:40:36very marginalized and forgotten group of
- 00:40:39people and so the goal here is to make
- 00:40:42everybody over 50 and hang on feel
- 00:40:46relevant and apartment
- 00:40:47you're still creative you're still a
- 00:40:49contributor mm-hmm and I think you start
- 00:40:51to really feel invisible and I think
- 00:40:52that happens a lot with women never 50
- 00:40:55is you really start to feel invisible
- 00:40:56mm-hmm and it doesn't feel good yeah and
- 00:40:59so I'm here to change that paradigm of
- 00:41:01what aging really looks like yeah and
- 00:41:03what aging needs I mean come on look at
- 00:41:05us for over 50 come on
- 00:41:08but but it's so important and you know
- 00:41:12I've been doing some statistical
- 00:41:13research and 50% of the population is
- 00:41:16over 50 yeah I remember because we're
- 00:41:17not we're not having as many babies yeah
- 00:41:20I'm gonna dying
- 00:41:21sadly the largest segment of people of
- 00:41:24age is over 85 Wow so in our lifetime
- 00:41:29our life expectancy I think is now only
- 00:41:30280 80 years old or 78 or 80 and when I
- 00:41:34was a kid I think was 60 yeah yeah so
- 00:41:37exponentially now in the next coming 10
- 00:41:40to 20 years our life expectancy will
- 00:41:42probably be well into our 90s and our
- 00:41:44kids life expectancy will be over a
- 00:41:46hundred because of technology and what
- 00:41:48they're doing with dynamic medicine and
- 00:41:50yeah all the things that we're taking
- 00:41:51better care of our bodies you know if we
- 00:41:54don't pollute ourselves to death than
- 00:41:55that right well none of us get well
- 00:41:57we'll be able to bring our pets back - I
- 00:41:59was just reading that oh wow our dead
- 00:42:00pets I heard about that cloning plant oh
- 00:42:02um okay so that's yeah that's what's
- 00:42:06important to me and that's yes what's
- 00:42:08feeding mice all right yeah and so and
- 00:42:10so so I want yeah please have a drink um
- 00:42:13so so your gallery
- 00:42:16um folk studios and galleries um right
- 00:42:20here in Georgetown right um has second
- 00:42:23Saturdays the Georgetown Art Attack
- 00:42:26second Saturdays from 6:00 to 9:00
- 00:42:28nominal yeah amazing Art Walk
- 00:42:31and there are 27 artists just here there
- 00:42:33recently was a group of artists from the
- 00:42:36gallery doing demos I wasn't one of them
- 00:42:38which is okay well yeah and I just mean
- 00:42:41not in that I wasn't one of them so I
- 00:42:43got to go around and see them and I
- 00:42:45really appreciate that
- 00:42:46yeah I it wasn't so bad yeah we said is
- 00:42:49it fun night I could have reached out
- 00:42:50yes it was very fun and the openings are
- 00:42:53really great so your bigger message
- 00:42:55being about the marginalization the past
- 00:42:58marginalization of people women and men
- 00:43:01over 50 and making sure that we
- 00:43:04recognize that things have changed and I
- 00:43:08think then how you're just showing you
- 00:43:10know it's to the authorship you know
- 00:43:12things are changing but it's really slow
- 00:43:14I mean I know that like ARP for example
- 00:43:17is working really hard to try to seem
- 00:43:18hip and cool right but they are like
- 00:43:20yeah you get that they're mad oh man how
- 00:43:25do you have my address
- 00:43:26yeah how do you know on my birthday you
- 00:43:28know but what but but they're trying
- 00:43:31super hard to change the paradigm of it
- 00:43:33right yeah they are and you know I just
- 00:43:35saw this ad for ages oh yeah yeah I know
- 00:43:38Simon was this billboard saying be who
- 00:43:41you are be yeah the creative one be thee
- 00:43:42and and it was this woman that was like
- 00:43:4575 years old and what's really funky and
- 00:43:47cool like it is and I thought it was
- 00:43:48really awesome yeah I thought anyone
- 00:43:50yeah no matter what yellow so I'm kinda
- 00:43:52so yeah now we can we can do even more
- 00:43:54with the tax deductable donation option
- 00:43:56yeah people to it to help us and watch
- 00:43:59us grow and it's very exciting it's
- 00:44:00really exciting yeah yeah so then just
- 00:44:03finishing things off same kind of a
- 00:44:06realm is what if anything do you need
- 00:44:11and how would you like to receive it
- 00:44:17we need money okay the people we do well
- 00:44:20the what's up please let's play them
- 00:44:25using each other's bad pets um yeah keep
- 00:44:28going but I know it's true um no we
- 00:44:31really do though you know we do because
- 00:44:32what this what this gallery is all about
- 00:44:34is it's an artist gallery yeah
- 00:44:36meaning that 85 percent of the gross
- 00:44:37sales goes directly into the artists I
- 00:44:39know which I don't Omega so for me to
- 00:44:41keep doing this and making it affordable
- 00:44:43and creating this space and being able
- 00:44:44to expand this space yeah um we're gonna
- 00:44:46need some help
- 00:44:47yeah it's we need people to come in we
- 00:44:50need people come in and buy start and
- 00:44:51you're not beautiful are we have up word
- 00:44:53show your pieces of art hi oh yeah the
- 00:44:56exceptional gallery quality great prices
- 00:44:59channeling it's no different price
- 00:45:00because the artists they can they can
- 00:45:03price things in a way that's more
- 00:45:05affordable because I'm not taking half
- 00:45:06their money exactly right now yeah and
- 00:45:09it's it's a unique business model it's I
- 00:45:12don't know of any other gallery that's
- 00:45:13doing other than a they're doing it
- 00:45:14exactly like I'm doing it but it's the
- 00:45:17only gallery that's over 50 that I know
- 00:45:18besides in New York
- 00:45:19yeah ask one other that I've heard of um
- 00:45:21so I'm trying to do something new
- 00:45:24interesting innovative and I'm really
- 00:45:26trying to do something for my people
- 00:45:28yeah have people are people that's me
- 00:45:30I'm gonna be a football and we know we
- 00:45:33all are really yeah so okay perfect
- 00:45:35I mean I think that that's that's well
- 00:45:37said all of it well said and this has
- 00:45:40been a lot of fun I have truly enjoyed
- 00:45:44this I hope that you've gotten to know a
- 00:45:45little bit more about Patti how could
- 00:45:47you help it because she's so articulate
- 00:45:49and I thought oh yeah no but you're one
- 00:45:52of those people who are just so funny to
- 00:45:54me that I can't help but laughing that
- 00:45:57ugly laugh you know what I mean even I
- 00:45:59can't even laugh the cute laugh like
