00:00:00
hey guys it's shimi and welcome back to
00:00:03
my
00:00:04
channel so I'm really really excited to
00:00:06
introduce the two dermatologist that I
00:00:08
have on here on call with me the first
00:00:11
is Dr candr Heath I am a Philadelphia
00:00:13
based dermatologist who specializes in
00:00:16
care for adults and pediatric patients
00:00:19
and the second is another highly
00:00:21
renowned black dermatologist Dr hope
00:00:23
Mitchell I am a board certified
00:00:25
dermatologist who practices medical
00:00:28
aesthetic and surgical der ology in Ohio
00:00:31
and today we'll be talking all about
00:00:33
growing your edges back so I hope you
00:00:35
have a pen and paper ready if you've
00:00:36
been struggling with your edges been
00:00:38
watching different videos AR to getting
00:00:39
good answers and things that have
00:00:41
actually helped you today is the day
00:00:43
that you're going to get like real
00:00:45
information from real people real
00:00:47
dermatologist I'm really excited to get
00:00:48
into this video the things I will talk
00:00:50
about in this video will be about lost
00:00:52
edges that resulted from things that you
00:00:54
did from the outside so like tight
00:00:56
hairstyles things like that and we're
00:00:58
not really going to talk about if you
00:01:00
have an internal problem and that's
00:01:01
causing your hair loss because if that's
00:01:03
the case you Pro you would need to go to
00:01:05
a doctor like there's no way I can tell
00:01:07
you what health condition that you're
00:01:08
having there can be like actual serious
00:01:10
health conditions that are causing you
00:01:11
to lose your hair and then you can also
00:01:12
just be deficient in certain things like
00:01:14
zinc and vitamin D are really common
00:01:16
deficiencies that can cause people to
00:01:19
lose their hair so it's going to be like
00:01:21
a guessing game trying to figure that
00:01:22
out without just going to a doctor even
00:01:24
though in this video we will talk about
00:01:26
ways to grow back your edges they're
00:01:28
only going to fall back out if you still
00:01:29
have have that health condition that
00:01:31
hasn't been checked out so make sure
00:01:32
that you know that but if it's because
00:01:34
of things that you did to your own hair
00:01:36
because let's be honest most of the time
00:01:38
we know that it was something that we
00:01:39
did or that was done externally to our
00:01:42
hair so that's what we're going to be
00:01:43
talking about mostly today and how to
00:01:46
actually grow your edges back so I hope
00:01:48
you guys are ready when people are
00:01:51
thinking about their edges really they
00:01:54
can start today by the reversal of doing
00:01:59
things that can be traumatic whether
00:02:01
it's glued down hairstyles that when
00:02:03
they're removed they're also removing um
00:02:06
hair and they're also traumatizing the
00:02:08
follicles limiting tight hair styles if
00:02:11
it hurts it's too tight if your if you
00:02:14
cannot move your eyebrows after it's in
00:02:17
it is too tight and our body tells us
00:02:20
you know pain throbbing little bumps
00:02:22
around the areas where the hairs are
00:02:24
being pulled it's not acceptable to say
00:02:27
I'll just go home and take Tylenol and
00:02:29
sleep it off that is a warning sign it's
00:02:32
like alert hello this is not cool those
00:02:35
hairs they come back finer and lighter
00:02:38
and thinner they're not robust hairs
00:02:41
that can really stand on their own they
00:02:43
need time to mature and to grow and if
00:02:46
you go back to those hair styling
00:02:48
practices while we're trying to grow the
00:02:50
hair you're just going to rip those new
00:02:51
hairs out and I often let them know that
00:02:54
some of these practices that have led
00:02:56
them to this point really started in
00:02:58
childhood often you know these things
00:03:00
started well beyond we even knew about
00:03:03
edges those things were being done to
00:03:05
our hair and even as a black
00:03:07
dermatologist who specializes in hair
00:03:10
loss you know occasionally yes we can we
00:03:12
get braids and things like that and even
00:03:15
I would find myself saying um you know
00:03:18
excuse me it's it's a little tight
00:03:21
because we've been kind of conditioned
00:03:23
to not express that but I want people to
00:03:26
know that yes that is that's the first
00:03:29
step instead of purchasing an oil or
00:03:31
this or whatever you see really limiting
00:03:35
the the tightness on the scalp people
00:03:37
think okay I'm going to get a treatment
00:03:39
and this is going to be fixed this is
00:03:41
one of those conditions where you
00:03:42
actually have to do both preventative
00:03:45
and treatment to really save the
00:03:48
follicles that you have okay so once
00:03:49
they've done the preventative part what
00:03:51
can they do as far as treating what
00:03:53
they've already lost with traction
00:03:54
alopecia I guess we should say the name
00:03:56
right because that's what thinning edges
00:03:58
is it's a medical condition called
00:04:00
traction alopecia and this type of hair
00:04:04
loss is very interesting in the
00:04:06
beginning the damage that is done from
00:04:08
tight hair styling Etc if those styles
00:04:12
are loosened you can actually begin to
00:04:14
regrow your hair the minute you see it
00:04:16
and you stop pulling and brushing and
00:04:19
and using those styles that are pulling
00:04:21
on the edges absolutely and everyone's
00:04:23
going to be different there are some
00:04:24
people who naturally started out with
00:04:26
finer hair to begin with you know they
00:04:28
didn't have thick robust hair and so
00:04:30
they may not be the ones that would be
00:04:32
likely to stimulate hair and come back
00:04:35
as quickly as maybe someone who
00:04:37
genetically has more robust hair and one
00:04:39
of the big takeaways from a study that's
00:04:42
been done looking at people who had
00:04:44
traction alopecia what they found was
00:04:46
that on relaxed hair so if people get
00:04:49
braids on top of relaxed hair they were
00:04:52
at higher risk than if someone had
00:04:54
natural hair and then got braids so
00:04:57
that's also something that I have added
00:05:00
on to on to my counseling that we know
00:05:03
so definitely first thing is to loosen
00:05:06
the hairstyles maybe change some some
00:05:08
hair habits if the practices do continue
00:05:12
then we see the other phase of the hair
00:05:14
loss where we're seeing more scarring
00:05:16
coming into play we know that just
00:05:19
applying a specific oil is not it it is
00:05:23
not going to just bring all of your hair
00:05:25
back especially if the follicles are
00:05:27
already scarred but with that said there
00:05:29
have have been studies that show that
00:05:32
there are some ingredients and and
00:05:34
things and and oils that can help with
00:05:37
hair growth one ingredient um the
00:05:39
research has showed to be somewhat
00:05:41
effective or not as effective as Medical
00:05:43
Treatments would be that there is oil
00:05:45
there is a study that shows there can be
00:05:48
some efficacy maybe as close to as a 2%
00:05:52
minoxidil um so I tend to recommend um
00:05:56
you know that as an ingredient to look
00:05:58
for in product because I get that
00:06:00
question all the time you know what oil
00:06:02
which oil and I think it's just a matter
00:06:04
of you know using it being consistent
00:06:07
massaging the scalp perhaps being able
00:06:10
to bring that blood flow to the scalp I
00:06:12
believe in massage I believe in
00:06:13
stimulating the scalp um definitely to
00:06:16
bring blood flow um to increase oxygen
00:06:19
and nutrients to the follicle I think
00:06:21
that it can be helpful and there are
00:06:23
things that we can do from an internal
00:06:25
standpoint to help promote you know hair
00:06:28
growth as well if you go into the store
00:06:30
there are lots of vitamins that say hair
00:06:32
and nail vitamins and one of the things
00:06:34
that they have in common is that they
00:06:36
have lots of biotin in them there's
00:06:38
really only one true hair loss condition
00:06:42
that is diagnosed as a baby where you
00:06:45
have actually problems processing Biotin
00:06:48
and that is a very small percentage of
00:06:50
the population it's actually very rare
00:06:52
that actually needs to definitely
00:06:54
supplement with biotin beyond what you
00:06:57
would normally get in a in a healthy
00:06:59
diet diet so all that to say when you
00:07:02
are looking for something kind of a a
00:07:05
supplement you do not need a supplement
00:07:07
that has a million times more biotin
00:07:10
than you than you really need not only
00:07:12
does the science not support the use of
00:07:16
Biotin for hair growth but also the
00:07:20
vitamin industry is not regulated like
00:07:24
drugs so it's unregulated but if we get
00:07:27
down to the science of it by that's not
00:07:30
it that's not it to bring those
00:07:32
follicles back but Dr hope can tell you
00:07:34
about some things you know for your diet
00:07:36
and things like that that can help you
00:07:38
know we do have some things that are
00:07:39
great we have definitely found that Sal
00:07:42
paletto we know that there's a hormone
00:07:44
that it blocks you know from causing us
00:07:47
to lose our our hair so we know that
00:07:49
supplements that contain that can be
00:07:51
beneficial I like to go the route of
00:07:53
antioxidants really to decrease
00:07:55
inflammation the more inflammation we
00:07:58
have in our system the more likely we're
00:08:00
to suffer with something be it hair loss
00:08:02
be it arthritis Etc and inflammation in
00:08:06
the bloodstream can be anything it could
00:08:08
be our diet eating lots of processed
00:08:10
food stress it could be just having a
00:08:12
medical condition okay right like
00:08:14
diabetes that's not controlled you know
00:08:16
loss of a loved one emotional loss so
00:08:19
there's a lot that we face on a
00:08:21
day-to-day basis that can really make us
00:08:23
more inflammatory and so really
00:08:26
incorporating antioxidants fruits and
00:08:28
vegetables
00:08:30
um I like to recommend ingredients such
00:08:32
as Macar root curcumin um ashwagandha I
00:08:36
usually keep it pretty you know light
00:08:39
with patients but I think addressing
00:08:41
from an internal standpoint is always
00:08:44
important when we want to really support
00:08:46
the hair growth we can have more robust
00:08:49
growth if internally we seem to be
00:08:51
balanced as well so that's a part that
00:08:53
we can add I definitely incorporate that
00:08:56
into the consultation but with any
00:08:58
treatment plan it's just always best to
00:09:01
start with the board certified
00:09:02
dermatologist instead of getting doing
00:09:04
something that may only get you a low
00:09:07
percentage of likelihood to regrow you
00:09:10
know that's we're missing months and
00:09:12
years if you come in as soon as possible
00:09:14
we can also add some other Medical
00:09:16
Treatments to that to try to enhance um
00:09:20
enhance that process when we think about
00:09:22
other things that we can do to treat um
00:09:24
patients who have this we may start out
00:09:26
by doing things that help to reduce
00:09:28
inflammation
00:09:29
around the around the hair follicles I
00:09:31
don't know how detailed we want to get
00:09:33
but sometimes that may include topical
00:09:36
steroids it may include injecting
00:09:38
steroids applying some hair growth
00:09:40
stimulants like a topical minoxidil
00:09:43
compounded with other things to actually
00:09:45
help more hair to to come in so it
00:09:48
really helps to get the guidance of a
00:09:51
dermatologist a visit to the
00:09:52
dermatologist for hair loss can be
00:09:54
covered by many Insurance plant I know a
00:09:56
lot of people don't know that but the
00:09:58
longer you wait the more likely we are
00:10:00
to see scarring and the less likely we
00:10:03
are able to bring back the hair so if
00:10:06
someone puts a hair styling they realize
00:10:08
they have an issue you know they seek
00:10:10
care they're really going to be in a way
00:10:12
better position than waiting 10 years to
00:10:14
come in their outcome is going to be
00:10:16
better and proba and way faster than
00:10:19
someone who has been doing it for 10
00:10:21
years we mentioned um steroids where we
00:10:24
could start topically or we can even
00:10:26
inject them in my practice it can range
00:10:29
any anywhere between1 to
00:10:31
$150 per injection if you have insurance
00:10:35
that can be covered out of pocket we do
00:10:37
have a sliding scale as well and so that
00:10:40
is to be able to help people who don't
00:10:42
have insurance but it's not thousands of
00:10:44
dollars okay yeah I thought I was you
00:10:45
were going to say like a th 2,000 so yes
00:10:48
that's reassuring so how long does it
00:10:50
take for people to see results two to
00:10:52
three injections to start to see results
00:10:55
because of the hair growth cycle and how
00:10:57
it works but I tend to see the best
00:10:59
results between 3 and 6 months after we
00:11:01
you know Implement a treatment plan I
00:11:04
start out with steroids but if we don't
00:11:06
see the benefit of that I do talk about
00:11:09
a treatment called PRP that we draw your
00:11:12
blood and we remove platelets that have
00:11:14
growth factors Etc in them to help
00:11:16
stimulate hair growth it can be an
00:11:18
option depending upon how extensive The
00:11:21
Edge loss is because once they scar we
00:11:24
may have to move on to other options
00:11:27
like considering um transplant it's
00:11:30
really at the end of the road that
00:11:32
person has done all multiple you know
00:11:35
types of medical treatment maybe even
00:11:37
other some other treatments that may not
00:11:39
even be on the main path of treatment
00:11:40
and they this is what they have these
00:11:43
follicles have you know been treated
00:11:44
with multiple things they're not coming
00:11:46
back so once that patient is deemed
00:11:48
stable yes a hair transplant is possible
00:11:52
that is something that's cosmetic you
00:11:54
know insurance insurance doesn't cover
00:11:56
it but all hair transplant surgeons are
00:11:59
not created equal so you actually would
00:12:02
want to go to someone who is familiar
00:12:05
with doing hair transplant on people of
00:12:08
color because our our hair is different
00:12:10
our follicle shape is different we
00:12:13
always put in a plug whether you use
00:12:15
this or not for black Derm directory.com
00:12:17
it's a great resource to find
00:12:20
dermatologists that are black that are
00:12:22
familiar with our hair type and I think
00:12:24
that that's the best way that you know
00:12:26
you can start
00:12:29
wow okay so I heard so many things that
00:12:31
I have never heard of before at all that
00:12:34
is really reassuring reassuring to know
00:12:36
that we have options super super
00:12:38
thankful to Dr kandra th and Dr hope
00:12:40
Mitchell for agreeing to come on and
00:12:43
share their expertise with me I'll link
00:12:45
all of their information below they have
00:12:47
active Instagram pages about their work
00:12:49
in dermatology they are also working
00:12:51
dermatologist so if you're in their area
00:12:53
you can go visit them yourself I feel
00:12:55
like this video will be really really
00:12:57
powerful for a lot of people who didn't
00:12:58
think that they had options but you do
00:13:00
have options so if you know other people
00:13:02
who are losing their edges definitely
00:13:04
share this video with them I really hope
00:13:05
that this video can help a lot of people
00:13:07
that was the goal come back in like a
00:13:09
few months let me know how it's working
00:13:11
but yeah thank you guys so much for
00:13:12
watching this video and I'll see you in
00:13:14
the next one
