Why Jesus Calmed the Storm: The Mark Series pt 15 (4:35-41)
Resumen
TLDRIn this discussion, the speaker addresses a common misinterpretation of the biblical passage where Jesus calms the storm, found in Mark 4:35-41. Many people interpret this passage allegorically, viewing it as a metaphor for God helping individuals through personal life storms. However, the speaker argues that the main point is to understand who Jesus is, highlighting His divine authority and identity. By controlling the elements, an act typically attributed to God in the Jewish tradition, Jesus reveals His divine nature, which amazed and frightened the disciples more than the storm itself. The rebuke Jesus gives the disciples for their lack of faith is not for their fear, but rather for questioning His care, which challenges believers to trust in Jesus' character and divine ability amid trials. The talk encourages seeing the passage as a revelation of Jesus' identity, cautioning against over-allegorizing biblical texts, which can overshadow the theological insights they offer.

Cronología
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The biblical passage from Mark 4:35-41 is read and explained, highlighting the key moments of the story such as Jesus' command to cross the Sea of Galilee and his calming of a storm, which often gets misrepresented as solely about overcoming personal trials.

- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Explains the geographical and situational context of the Sea of Galilee and storms, pointing out that Jesus intentionally led them into the storm as a teaching moment about his divine control rather than a simple lesson about personal peace amidst life's challenges.

Concludes by emphasizing the correct application of the passage, seeing it as a revelation of Jesus's divinity and an encouragement to trust in God's goodness, rather than focusing solely on personal allegorical interpretations.

- 00:00:00tonight we're going to talk about a
- 00:00:01frequently abused passage I think this
- 00:00:03passage is actually really regularly
- 00:00:04abused and we don't want to overly
- 00:00:08allegorize it because that's that's the
- 00:00:09abuse that I often see with this passage
- 00:00:11of Jesus calming the waters right there
- 00:00:13in the boat there's a storm Jesus's
- 00:00:15peace be still so this is the problem
- 00:00:19here is that people miss the main point
- 00:00:20of the passage and it's not about Jesus
- 00:00:23getting you through the storms of your
- 00:00:24life I'm sorry I'm not saying that's not
- 00:00:26a point I'm saying that's not the main
- 00:00:28point and so I want to give do to the
- 00:00:31main point of the passage it's not about
- 00:00:33the storms of my life actually it's
- 00:00:34about who Jesus is so pretty profound
- 00:00:37stuff pretty neat stuff
- 00:00:38we're in mark chapter 4 verse 35 this is
- 00:00:42the mark series part 15 if you're
- 00:00:44watching online you can get the playlist
- 00:00:46in the description down below for the
- 00:00:48entire mark playlist as we go verse by
- 00:00:49verse through the whole book we're just
- 00:00:51gonna start now by reading the whole
- 00:00:53section it's marked for 35 through 41
- 00:00:56I'm just gonna read through it get it
- 00:00:57like sort of stored up in your mind
- 00:00:58freshly in your mind then we're gonna go
- 00:01:00over it more slowly so here we go
- 00:01:03verse 35 on that day when evening came
- 00:01:06he said to them let us go over to the
- 00:01:08other side there in the Sea of Galilee
- 00:01:10so he's like let us go over to the other
- 00:01:12side of the sea leaving the crowd they
- 00:01:14took him along with them in the boat
- 00:01:16just as he was and other boats were with
- 00:01:18him and there arose a fierce Gale of
- 00:01:21wind and the waves were breaking over
- 00:01:23the boat so much that the boat was
- 00:01:25already filling up Jesus himself was in
- 00:01:28the stern asleep on the cushion and they
- 00:01:31woke him and said to him teacher do you
- 00:01:33not care that we are perishing and he
- 00:01:37got up and rebuked the wind and said to
- 00:01:39the sea hush be still and the wind died
- 00:01:44down and it became perfectly calm and he
- 00:01:47said to them why are you afraid how is
- 00:01:51it that you have no faith they became
- 00:01:54very much afraid and said to one another
- 00:01:56who then is this that even the wind and
- 00:01:59the sea obey Him and all the like the
- 00:02:03bare bones we need to understand what
- 00:02:04just happened is right here in the
- 00:02:05passage like it's right there in the
- 00:02:07passage but um let me just remind us
- 00:02:10where I think the the abuse the misuse
- 00:02:13of this pass
- 00:02:13sometimes happens and I'm not saying
- 00:02:16there's nothing true in this I'm saying
- 00:02:17that when you make this the whole thing
- 00:02:19you've missed the passage the focus is
- 00:02:21usually on help God helping us through
- 00:02:23trials Jesus is with us in the storm
- 00:02:26that's the idea and if he's asleep and
- 00:02:27he's at peace than you can be at peace
- 00:02:29too but I can't imagine what would have
- 00:02:31happened if all the disciples just went
- 00:02:33to bed
- 00:02:33right then and there on the boat they'd
- 00:02:35all be dead now I mean I'm not just
- 00:02:36saying it doesn't perfectly parallel the
- 00:02:39you know the application that it's been
- 00:02:40given so this can be helpful the problem
- 00:02:42is this is not the primary focus of the
- 00:02:44passage that's the first problem the
- 00:02:45second problem is this it can lead us to
- 00:02:47stretching the text of Scripture and
- 00:02:49it's a habit that sometimes helps our
- 00:02:52hearts but it doesn't help us understand
- 00:02:54God's Word and so I'm gonna go ahead and
- 00:02:56just kind of confront that a little bit
- 00:02:58at least to the best of my ability why I
- 00:02:59think that this is not the the proper
- 00:03:04method of Bible study to just
- 00:03:05immediately go to the storms of your
- 00:03:07life with this passage it can actually
- 00:03:09hurt your ability to read and study the
- 00:03:11Bible if you too often allegorize
- 00:03:13everything so that it's about whatever
- 00:03:16you're going through in the moment
- 00:03:17because the Bible is sometimes about
- 00:03:20what you're going through in the moment
- 00:03:21but it's not always just that and you
- 00:03:24can miss out on the theology or beings
- 00:03:25hot because you're only reading it to
- 00:03:26find one thing how is this going to get
- 00:03:28me through my day and then you can be
- 00:03:31missing out on all these other layers of
- 00:03:32meaning and stuff that are in the text
- 00:03:33so what is the main focus the main focus
- 00:03:38is the identity of Jesus we get this
- 00:03:39because at the very end they say who
- 00:03:41then is this this is the response to all
- 00:03:43this stuff in verse 41 they're like well
- 00:03:45then who is this who's who who's Jesus
- 00:03:47that this event that just happened
- 00:03:49revealed something about who Jesus is
- 00:03:51and that's the thing that we might miss
- 00:03:53and I'm gonna get into that because it's
- 00:03:55actually really neat stuff so let's dig
- 00:03:57in with that in mind I do want to apply
- 00:03:59to our lives and it will affect our
- 00:04:01allegorical storms I just want to when
- 00:04:03we get to that section towards the end I
- 00:04:04want to talk about how we just are
- 00:04:06cautious about applying it to things
- 00:04:08like that and we do it thoughtfully
- 00:04:10rather than recklessly at least that's
- 00:04:12my understanding of the scriptures so
- 00:04:14mark 4:35 says on that day when evening
- 00:04:16came he said to them let us go over to
- 00:04:19the other side okay this is already
- 00:04:20interesting because the stuff that's
- 00:04:22about to happen is trigger because Jesus
- 00:04:23himself says this is the plan we're
- 00:04:26gonna go and cross over we're gonna go
- 00:04:27to the other
- 00:04:27side the time of days evening this is a
- 00:04:30potentially more dangerous time to get
- 00:04:32up on the Sea of Galilee is in the
- 00:04:34evening time Jesus he's not a fisherman
- 00:04:37but he is in charge right there the
- 00:04:39fisherman they know the Sea of Galilee
- 00:04:41like nobody else does and they know the
- 00:04:42perils of the sea and all that kind of
- 00:04:44thing but it's already inserted because
- 00:04:45Jesus is the one that says hey let's
- 00:04:47let's get in the boats and cross over at
- 00:04:49that time then verse 36 says leaving the
- 00:04:52crowd now I say leaving the crowd let's
- 00:04:55just remind ourselves of what happened
- 00:04:56last week we were going through mark and
- 00:04:58we're looking at Jesus he's preaching
- 00:05:00these parables he's in a boat possibly
- 00:05:02at a place called soars Cove in the Sea
- 00:05:04of Galilee and he's in this boat and
- 00:05:06he's preaching to the crowd that's up on
- 00:05:08the land kind of a natural amphitheater
- 00:05:11in this area of Galilee
- 00:05:12so he's sitting in the boat the crowds
- 00:05:15there he's dismisses the crowd he's like
- 00:05:17now let's just get in the boat and go
- 00:05:18the other way so leaving the crowd they
- 00:05:21took a uh they took him along with them
- 00:05:23in the boat just as he was and other
- 00:05:25boats were with him and here's two
- 00:05:26phrases that I think are interesting in
- 00:05:28verse 36 just as he was why just as he
- 00:05:31was what does this mean just as he was
- 00:05:34is it like just uh just as he was
- 00:05:36because if you take Jesus you better
- 00:05:38take him just as he is well be like well
- 00:05:40that's a good application but it
- 00:05:41probably isn't what this is about you
- 00:05:42know it's true you gotta better take the
- 00:05:44real Jesus as he really is but I don't
- 00:05:46think that's the application it probably
- 00:05:48means Jesus was already in the boat so
- 00:05:52then they get in and they're like just
- 00:05:53let's go
- 00:05:54so they take him just as he is already
- 00:05:55in the boat that is probably the
- 00:05:58application right there
- 00:06:00because he spoke to the crowd from the
- 00:06:02boat it says also that other boats were
- 00:06:04with him and this is something that
- 00:06:05nobody ever talks about did you ever
- 00:06:08notice this passage there's other boats
- 00:06:09wait to these other boats like go
- 00:06:11through this storm they don't seem to be
- 00:06:14around at the end of the storm did they
- 00:06:16just uh you know they like run away at
- 00:06:18some point or did they travel for a bit
- 00:06:20and then go back and there's just no
- 00:06:22details that I see in Scripture to tell
- 00:06:24us what happened to these other boats
- 00:06:25now here's why I find this interesting I
- 00:06:28don't know what happened to these other
- 00:06:30boats you know maybe they just turn back
- 00:06:31but what's interesting about it is it
- 00:06:34reads like a memory it reads like
- 00:06:36someone's recounting this is just what
- 00:06:38happened
- 00:06:39like they're telling the story and
- 00:06:41they're like oh yeah so as he was in the
- 00:06:42boat we took him in that there were
- 00:06:43other boats with them and they don't
- 00:06:44even come back to that to talk about it
- 00:06:46again but when you report memories this
- 00:06:48is what you do - I remember it was a
- 00:06:50Tuesday yeah oh yeah and I had that dumb
- 00:06:52sweater that I got for Christmas on I
- 00:06:54remember that you know and you just have
- 00:06:55these little details you throw in there
- 00:06:57because it's a memory recall thing
- 00:06:59whereas if you're fabricating a story
- 00:07:00those little details tend to be all left
- 00:07:02out and so I think that's just
- 00:07:04interesting in the text of mark because
- 00:07:06it's like a memory a random detail of
- 00:07:08memory retold nothing else about them
- 00:07:10later then in verse 37 it says and there
- 00:07:13arose a fierce Gale of wind and the
- 00:07:15waves were breaking over the boat so
- 00:07:17much that the boat was already filling
- 00:07:18up Jesus himself was in the stern asleep
- 00:07:21on the cushion and they woke him and
- 00:07:24said to him teacher do you not care that
- 00:07:26we are perishing so again we don't know
- 00:07:28what happened to the other boats now
- 00:07:29it's just the one boat with Jesus and
- 00:07:31the disciples the Sea of Galilee to
- 00:07:35understand this a little bit better
- 00:07:36it is known for perilous sudden storms
- 00:07:39this is actually something that's known
- 00:07:41for especially during certain times of
- 00:07:43year and so there's records even
- 00:07:46recently of boats being lost to sudden
- 00:07:48storms boats of fishermen who know their
- 00:07:50business on the lake you know they know
- 00:07:51what they're doing so they knew the
- 00:07:54risks and again evening trips in
- 00:07:56particular are a little more risky than
- 00:07:57others the Sea of Galilee itself is
- 00:07:59about 700 feet below sea level so it
- 00:08:01sits in like a deep valley the Jordan
- 00:08:03River flows downhill into it it flows
- 00:08:06into the sea at about 700 feet sea level
- 00:08:08the Jordan River flows out of the sea at
- 00:08:10the south point and flows down to the
- 00:08:11Dead Sea which is much even lower it's
- 00:08:13the Sea of Galilee is the lowest
- 00:08:15freshwater body of water on earth the
- 00:08:18Dead Sea is the lowest saltwater body of
- 00:08:19water on earth interestingly but there's
- 00:08:23great fishing there and it's a really
- 00:08:24neat environment you can grow food there
- 00:08:26really easily because of this lower
- 00:08:27altitude and there's just the dynamics
- 00:08:29of the environment however there's these
- 00:08:31mountains around it and there's these
- 00:08:34winds that sometimes come racing down
- 00:08:36the mountains they meet they get the
- 00:08:37cool air coming off the mountains that
- 00:08:40meets the warm air on the on the sea and
- 00:08:42it can create sudden disturbances you
- 00:08:45know weather basically bad weather that
- 00:08:48can be very sudden now what's
- 00:08:50interesting is we actually found a boat
- 00:08:52in
- 00:08:5286 in the Sea of Galilee that dates to
- 00:08:55the time of Christ many of you guys have
- 00:08:57heard of this you've seen the
- 00:08:58archaeology photos of this boat that
- 00:09:00they found it all collapsed out but
- 00:09:02there it was
- 00:09:02and it was about 26 feet long about
- 00:09:04seven feet wide originally not flattened
- 00:09:07out seven people hide but it but it
- 00:09:09would have fit about 15 guys using the
- 00:09:11boat working in the boat that could have
- 00:09:13fit to be traveling around so it fits
- 00:09:15with Jesus and His disciples this may
- 00:09:17have been kind of the style boat that
- 00:09:18they had perhaps this boat dated
- 00:09:21sometime between 120 BC and 40 ad so
- 00:09:25it's somewhere in that region that's
- 00:09:26what they think
- 00:09:29so Jesus's idea let's head out there
- 00:09:31let's go simple trip we're just gonna
- 00:09:33cross over we're just gonna cross over
- 00:09:35the Sea of Galilee made into this
- 00:09:37something that's very dangerous and very
- 00:09:39treacherous and I do feel like we get
- 00:09:41this kind of thing all the time you're
- 00:09:43going about life and you think you're
- 00:09:45just gonna do this simple thing and it's
- 00:09:47not simple and all the sudden it gets
- 00:09:48really bad and really hairy and really
- 00:09:51tough and so there's some application in
- 00:09:52our lives there but what I think is the
- 00:09:55most shocking thing that happens here is
- 00:09:57when they wake up Jesus and they say
- 00:09:58don't you care that we're dying that to
- 00:10:03me is extremely revealing I think the
- 00:10:05words are very important don't you care
- 00:10:08that we're dying I get this and I get
- 00:10:13this in my old life and I think you get
- 00:10:15it in yours when the trials you're going
- 00:10:17through have you asking does God even
- 00:10:20care about what I'm going through this
- 00:10:24is very different than help Lord I need
- 00:10:26help that's a very different kind of
- 00:10:28prayer help I need help that that's
- 00:10:30still a per faith that's still prayer of
- 00:10:32trust but this is more like I'm not even
- 00:10:34sure that you care about me this I think
- 00:10:38is I'll come to this later I think it's
- 00:10:40why they get rebuked for lack of faith
- 00:10:42this kind of hits hard and this is where
- 00:10:44I think application to all of us is
- 00:10:45pretty relevant you will go through
- 00:10:48times of life where there are struggles
- 00:10:50and there are trials and there are
- 00:10:51hardships and you would you may find
- 00:10:53that your faith in God's character not
- 00:10:57just his power his character his
- 00:11:00goodness his love for you that that is
- 00:11:02challenged because you see yourself in
- 00:11:04the middle of this hardship
- 00:11:06and you feel like he could stop this you
- 00:11:09could do something or not I get this and
- 00:11:13in this there's an application for us
- 00:11:15today for sure I think it's pretty big
- 00:11:18but let's let's come back to that a
- 00:11:20little bit later
- 00:11:21verse 39 verse 39 it says then he got up
- 00:11:25Jesus wakes he responds to them gets up
- 00:11:27rebuked the wind and said to the sea
- 00:11:29hush be still and the wind died down and
- 00:11:33it became perfectly calm so this is like
- 00:11:37a sudden change sudden boom it goes from
- 00:11:39crazy wind and dangerous storm to just
- 00:11:41nothing then in verse 40 he rebukes them
- 00:11:45and he said to them why are you afraid
- 00:11:47how is it that you have no faith that's
- 00:11:51a pretty strong rebuke that he gives
- 00:11:53them and then they became very much
- 00:11:55afraid and said to one another who then
- 00:11:56is this that even the wind and sea obey
- 00:11:57Him so it quickly calm like I said in
- 00:12:00verse 39 when it says it became
- 00:12:02perfectly calm it's in the the in the
- 00:12:04Greek there's these different I'm not
- 00:12:05gonna try and teach you guys Greek here
- 00:12:07but I just want to mention that I didn't
- 00:12:09make this up okay the Greek it does talk
- 00:12:11about there are different past tenses
- 00:12:14there it's the aorist is basically the
- 00:12:17way they say past tense and there's
- 00:12:19different senses in which you can have
- 00:12:20past tense past tense continual action
- 00:12:22action that stopped sometime in the past
- 00:12:24and so there's more nuance in the way
- 00:12:26they form a word in the Greek that we
- 00:12:28don't have in the English sometimes we
- 00:12:29can get some nuance out of it from the
- 00:12:31Greek the aorist since in verse 39 that
- 00:12:35the wind died down and became perfectly
- 00:12:37calm it implies a suddenness not a
- 00:12:40gradual dying down that's all I'm saying
- 00:12:41here suddenly so it would have been
- 00:12:44obvious to them this was in response to
- 00:12:46the command of Jesus boom he commands it
- 00:12:49it calms down suddenly this is obviously
- 00:12:51a miracle some commentators they want to
- 00:12:53take everything that happens in the
- 00:12:55Bible and try to make it a natural event
- 00:12:57now what sort of coincidence could occur
- 00:13:00here to explain this and this works for
- 00:13:03certain miracles right like when you
- 00:13:04read about certain stuff happening
- 00:13:07perhaps just a flood happening at the
- 00:13:11right time or even some of the
- 00:13:13descriptions of the Red Sea crossing
- 00:13:14about water is piling up early you know
- 00:13:16further on you read some of this stuff
- 00:13:17and you go yeah some of this can be
- 00:13:19explained with
- 00:13:20natural events in which case God's
- 00:13:21designing of the moment that it happened
- 00:13:23right when it was needed this sort of
- 00:13:25random unlikely event was the miracle
- 00:13:28other times this doesn't work at all
- 00:13:30right like Moses throws down his staff
- 00:13:32and it turns into a snake I'm like what
- 00:13:34is your natural naturalistic explanation
- 00:13:37for this like I don't think it was well
- 00:13:38some snakes get really hard and people
- 00:13:40can't tell that there's me I don't think
- 00:13:41that this is you know you can't explain
- 00:13:43this away and I think that part of it is
- 00:13:46a modern allergy to miracles we
- 00:13:47basically we just believe them without
- 00:13:50justification rather than as opposed to
- 00:13:53the opposite believing any miracle story
- 00:13:55without any investigation or any
- 00:13:56research both of these two are probably
- 00:13:58a bad place to be but here I'll say it
- 00:14:03is miraculous that's the point Jesus did
- 00:14:05an actual miracle right he commanded and
- 00:14:08it was it was stilled just like that
- 00:14:11others will say that when Jesus rebukes
- 00:14:14the wind that this is a demonic exorcism
- 00:14:17that Jesus is performing on the wind we
- 00:14:19heard that before this is what some some
- 00:14:22commentators will say it's a demonic
- 00:14:23exorcism Jesus is performing on the wind
- 00:14:25and I've read multiple commentaries it's
- 00:14:27funny is when it's always good if you're
- 00:14:29gonna read commentaries to read multiple
- 00:14:30commentaries because what one
- 00:14:32commentator says this is so obvious the
- 00:14:35next one's like that is so obviously the
- 00:14:38opposite of that right like in there
- 00:14:39everybody thinks it's so obvious no
- 00:14:41matter what their opinion is and you
- 00:14:43being reading only one common commentary
- 00:14:46can just get jerked around a little bit
- 00:14:48sometimes to be honest
- 00:14:50so let me expose you to two side to this
- 00:14:52issue some will say this is exorcism
- 00:14:54language because he he he says hush be
- 00:14:59still and so he says like be quiet to
- 00:15:02the wind hush like he told the demon to
- 00:15:04be quiet
- 00:15:05previously in mark the other word they
- 00:15:07they hook it on is verse 39 where he
- 00:15:08says he rebuked the wind and they say
- 00:15:11rebuke and be quiet these are things
- 00:15:12that speak of demonic extradition
- 00:15:14exorcism try saying that word too many
- 00:15:16times it just starts to turn into some
- 00:15:19sort of a tongue twister well I think
- 00:15:21that this is wrong and here's a couple
- 00:15:23reasons why one it's just two verbs
- 00:15:26rebuke and be quiet these words are not
- 00:15:29like fancy technical terms for exorcism
- 00:15:31in fact even in Mark G
- 00:15:33in fact even in his passage he rebukes
- 00:15:35the disciples he rebukes them we don't
- 00:15:38think well they were obviously possessed
- 00:15:39at that point like the word rebuke is
- 00:15:41frequently used having nothing to do
- 00:15:43with exorcisms so I don't think that
- 00:15:45this wind was demonic I don't think
- 00:15:47we're getting that from the passage I'll
- 00:15:48put it that way he did treat it like
- 00:15:50it's like it's personified in a sense
- 00:15:52but I think is speaking of his control
- 00:15:53over the weather and all that the other
- 00:15:56the other one is be quiet which he I
- 00:15:59mean he's just telling you what to do be
- 00:16:01quiet and I don't think there's anything
- 00:16:03about that that is ritualistically
- 00:16:05exorcism plus another point is this in
- 00:16:08the Gospel of Mark
- 00:16:09now okay in Jewish let me back up in
- 00:16:11Jewish texts from Jesus's time and
- 00:16:14they're about exorcism did have a lot of
- 00:16:17key words things you had to do think
- 00:16:20things that they would say rituals they
- 00:16:22would engage in and all that stuff is
- 00:16:24curiously missing from the Gospel of
- 00:16:25Mark when Jesus cast out a demon he's
- 00:16:27just like get out and it goes he doesn't
- 00:16:30do any of those things and mark as you
- 00:16:32look through mark he doesn't have this
- 00:16:33sort of ritual you know method that
- 00:16:36Jesus uses for exorcisms he's just
- 00:16:39responding like someone with authority
- 00:16:40that's it he just he has the authority
- 00:16:42he tells it what to do and that's what
- 00:16:44happens so Mark avoids this sort of
- 00:16:47exorcism terminology so it's weird to
- 00:16:51read it into this passage so I think
- 00:16:54that commentaries who say that Jesus is
- 00:16:57is exercising a demonic wind they just
- 00:16:59go way too far I think that we whatever
- 00:17:01the court because of the wind was
- 00:17:03there's not actually in question in mark
- 00:17:06it's just that Jesus has power over it
- 00:17:07that's the thing that's the thing others
- 00:17:11will say this passage represents Jesus
- 00:17:12and Jonah because Jonah was fleeing the
- 00:17:16presence of the Lord and a great storm
- 00:17:18arose and where was Jonah he was
- 00:17:20sleeping in the boat he went down to the
- 00:17:23depth of the boat and he was asleep
- 00:17:24there fast asleep I don't think that
- 00:17:27there's a strong connection here between
- 00:17:29Jesus and Jonah unless you want to make
- 00:17:31it a contrast and not a comparison
- 00:17:33because Jonah's rebelling against God
- 00:17:35and that's and he's sleeping in the boat
- 00:17:37probably the sleep of like depression
- 00:17:38because there's a different kind of
- 00:17:40sleep there whereas Jesus he's
- 00:17:43fulfilling the Father's will and here he
- 00:17:46is asleep in the boat
- 00:17:47is not judgment upon him or anything
- 00:17:49like that right Jonah gets thrown in to
- 00:17:52stop the storm Jesus just commands it so
- 00:17:53if you want to say there's a relation to
- 00:17:55Jonah
- 00:17:55then the typological relation is Jesus
- 00:17:58is better than Jonah that would be and
- 00:18:00that's consistent cuz Jesus is better
- 00:18:02than Abraham better than Aaron the high
- 00:18:04priest he's you better than you fill in
- 00:18:06the blank someone greater than Moses is
- 00:18:08here I'm greater than Solomon all of
- 00:18:10that so in that sense there could be a
- 00:18:11greater than comparison but here's the
- 00:18:14main point also all that's not the main
- 00:18:16point here's the main point who is this
- 00:18:18Jesus guy this is the thrust who then is
- 00:18:21this that even the wind and waves obey
- 00:18:23Him and we have to become a little
- 00:18:25Jewish and our thinking here to
- 00:18:27understand how profound what Jesus did
- 00:18:29is they see this action of Jesus
- 00:18:36rebuking the storm and controlling the
- 00:18:38weather they see that as revealing not
- 00:18:40just his power but his identity think
- 00:18:44about that for a second to the Jewish
- 00:18:46mind something he did made them think we
- 00:18:50already thought he's Messiah but wait a
- 00:18:53minute what he just did what he just did
- 00:18:55blows us away now we're like but who
- 00:18:56really is this so let's think about it a
- 00:18:59little more deeply the Old Testament
- 00:19:02context is this I'll summarize then I'm
- 00:19:03gonna give you several passages we'll
- 00:19:05look at psalms in particular the Old
- 00:19:09Testament idea is this God not man
- 00:19:12commands and controls the weather that's
- 00:19:15the general Old Testament context God
- 00:19:18commands and controls the weather and
- 00:19:20here's Jesus commanding and controlling
- 00:19:21the weather even when Elijah prayed and
- 00:19:23it didn't rain and then he prayed and it
- 00:19:25did rain he didn't command anything he
- 00:19:27just prayed and then he waited to see
- 00:19:29what God would do but Jesus does
- 00:19:31something far more aggressive and more
- 00:19:33authoritative than even Elijah did so in
- 00:19:37Psalm 65 verses 5 through 8 listen to
- 00:19:40listen to this I've read several Psalms
- 00:19:42now and hear the Jewish context about
- 00:19:45the one who can command the weather by
- 00:19:48awesome deeds this is a Psalm 65 5 by
- 00:19:50awesome deeds you answer us in
- 00:19:52righteousness oh god of our salvation
- 00:19:53you are the trust of all the ends of the
- 00:19:56earth and of the farthest sea who
- 00:19:58establish who establishes the mountains
- 00:20:00by his strength being
- 00:20:01girded with might who stills the roaring
- 00:20:03sees the roaring of their waves and the
- 00:20:07tumult of the peoples they who dwell in
- 00:20:09the ends of the earth stand in awe of
- 00:20:10your signs you make the dawn and the
- 00:20:12sunset shout for joy God is the one who
- 00:20:15stills the Seas
- 00:20:16that's Psalm 65 the roaring of the waves
- 00:20:20Psalm 89 verses 8 and 9 say the
- 00:20:23following Oh Lord God of hosts who is
- 00:20:26like you o mighty Lord your faithfulness
- 00:20:29also surrounds you you rule the swelling
- 00:20:32of the sea when its waves rise you still
- 00:20:35them now this is interesting because
- 00:20:39it's not only saying God does this but
- 00:20:41it's one of the whose like you passages
- 00:20:43of the Old Testament these happen a lot
- 00:20:44right where they talk about something
- 00:20:46God does that nobody else does and the
- 00:20:49way they talk about it is they're like
- 00:20:50who's like you Lord you do this nobody's
- 00:20:53like that nobody does that but you got
- 00:20:55and the thing the example is he stills
- 00:20:58the roaring of the Seas job 38 I won't
- 00:21:04read the passage but God is recounting
- 00:21:06all these things only he does
- 00:21:07hey Joel were you there it's the were
- 00:21:09you there passage can you do this can
- 00:21:10you do that can you do this it's all
- 00:21:12these things job can't do that just show
- 00:21:14him his smallness before Almighty God
- 00:21:15and one of those things is that God can
- 00:21:18put limits on the seas and it's not like
- 00:21:21something people can do in several
- 00:21:24Psalms God rebukes the sea Psalm 1815
- 00:21:27Psalm 104 verse 7 Psalm 106 verse 9
- 00:21:30Isaiah 50 verse 2 Nahum chapter 1 verse
- 00:21:324 all of those passages I hope you wrote
- 00:21:35all that down real quick as I sorry you
- 00:21:38can have my notes later
- 00:21:39so God rebukes the sea in those passages
- 00:21:41it's god it's Yahweh is the God of all
- 00:21:44creation who controls and rebukes the
- 00:21:45seas but listen to this in Psalm 107
- 00:21:48because Psalm 107 talks about God's
- 00:21:49control over various things interesting
- 00:21:52Psalms some of these things that God
- 00:21:53controls are types of Christ in some way
- 00:21:55they connect to Jesus as you travel
- 00:21:57through I love doing this with Psalms
- 00:21:58you read a psalm and you see how do how
- 00:22:00it connects us to Christ it's a fun
- 00:22:02thing to do actually but in Psalm 107
- 00:22:04verse 23 this is what it says those who
- 00:22:08go down to the sea in ships who do
- 00:22:11business on the great waters they have
- 00:22:13seen the works of the Lord and his
- 00:22:15in the deep for he spoke and raised up
- 00:22:17the stormy wind which lifted up the
- 00:22:20waves of the sea they rose up to the
- 00:22:22heavens they went down to the depths
- 00:22:24it's like this exaggerated these giant
- 00:22:26waves are going up and down right here
- 00:22:27hook to the heavens and out of the
- 00:22:28depths they're doing this their soul
- 00:22:30melted away in their misery they reeled
- 00:22:33and staggered like a drunken man and
- 00:22:34we're at their wit's end
- 00:22:37so it's describing sailors on the sea in
- 00:22:39the midst of a massive storm that God
- 00:22:41has brought upon verse 28 then they
- 00:22:44cried to the Lord in their trouble and
- 00:22:46he brought them out of their distress he
- 00:22:49caused the storm to be still so that the
- 00:22:51waves of the sea were hushed then they
- 00:22:53were glad because they were quiet so he
- 00:22:55guided them to their desired haven let
- 00:22:58them get let them give thanks to the
- 00:23:00Lord for his loving-kindness and for his
- 00:23:01wonders to the sons of men this speaks
- 00:23:05to the identity of Jesus not just the
- 00:23:08source of his power who then is this
- 00:23:11Yahweh controls the waters God controls
- 00:23:15of the storms and Jesus just did this
- 00:23:20some people like to say that mark the
- 00:23:23Gospel of Mark knows nothing of the
- 00:23:24deity of Christ and I just think they
- 00:23:28just don't understand the Gospel of Mark
- 00:23:30because what's happening is we're
- 00:23:32ramping up the deity of Christ
- 00:23:34throughout the Gospel of Mark I mean he
- 00:23:36starts pretty strong when he seems to
- 00:23:37imply that Jesus is Yahweh in Chapter 1
- 00:23:39have you talked about the beginning of
- 00:23:41mark Jesus then command diamond and
- 00:23:44they're calling him the Son of God he
- 00:23:47calls himself the Son of Man which we'll
- 00:23:49get to later at he even ramps up the
- 00:23:51meaning of Son of Man as having this the
- 00:23:54one who we worshiped by all nations and
- 00:23:55all this kind of stuff
- 00:23:56Jesus is in fact I'm gonna do it towards
- 00:24:00the end of the Mark series we're gonna
- 00:24:01do one day where we just do the deity of
- 00:24:02Jesus in the Gospel of Mark and just
- 00:24:03gonna survey all the stuff because I
- 00:24:05just want it all and one resource for
- 00:24:08people to have online I think it's
- 00:24:09powerful stuff so a lot of people say
- 00:24:12this and they use it to try to undermine
- 00:24:14the inspiration of Scripture oh yeah
- 00:24:17mark it had a whole different Jesus than
- 00:24:19the Jesus of John John thinks Jesus is
- 00:24:22deity did not mark and I'm like but
- 00:24:24that's the whole point of this passage
- 00:24:26we're in right here today
- 00:24:27is that mark is showing us showing us
- 00:24:31teaching us not with commentary but with
- 00:24:33telling us the stories of what Jesus did
- 00:24:35that he is he is the one so to speak he
- 00:24:38can calm the seas so this is why they're
- 00:24:41so scared all of a sudden think about
- 00:24:45this when they were scared of the water
- 00:24:48the word is that they were afraid in
- 00:24:50verse 40 they were afraid so they woke
- 00:24:52up Jesus right then he says why are you
- 00:24:54so afraid why are you afraid oh you you
- 00:24:56know why do you have no faith but in
- 00:24:58verse 41 after Jesus stills the waters
- 00:25:01and it's calm and they should be like oh
- 00:25:02cool things are great it says they were
- 00:25:04very much afraid they're more scared
- 00:25:09they're more scared after he does this
- 00:25:12than before now they were pretty scared
- 00:25:14before but also there's more to it it's
- 00:25:16a different kind of fear and hero will
- 00:25:18throw some Greek at you briefly because
- 00:25:20it's two different words for fear it's
- 00:25:23probably the same word in English right
- 00:25:24but there's two different words for fear
- 00:25:25one is a de LOI and de LOI means
- 00:25:29cowardly fearful or lacking courage and
- 00:25:32that's how they felt when the when the
- 00:25:33sea was raging they thought they were
- 00:25:34gonna die cowardly for your full lack of
- 00:25:36courage Jesus is why were you afraid I
- 00:25:39were you de LOI the next one is in verse
- 00:25:4141 when it describes after they see what
- 00:25:43Jesus does and they were looking at him
- 00:25:45they're not scared of the water anymore
- 00:25:46but they look at him and they have a new
- 00:25:47fear a new reverence for him and that's
- 00:25:48the word that's used its fob on which
- 00:25:52can carry a connotation of intimidation
- 00:25:55or reverence so it's a different word
- 00:25:59that can have a different connotation to
- 00:26:00it and I can see it they're scared of
- 00:26:02these waves are gonna kill us but then
- 00:26:04when they see what Jesus does and they
- 00:26:06realize the implications of the deity of
- 00:26:08Christ of you know who is he
- 00:26:10he didn't even pray he just commanded he
- 00:26:13didn't call out to God he just did it
- 00:26:15who is he and they realize afresh who is
- 00:26:19this guy and it hits them they already
- 00:26:22thought he was Messiah this is different
- 00:26:24who is Messiah who is this Messiah and
- 00:26:27it blows them away
- 00:26:31to understand it better think of all the
- 00:26:33Old Testament Saints who had encounters
- 00:26:35with a theophany right they saw like the
- 00:26:39angel of the Lord in particular who
- 00:26:41we've talked about who's the theophany
- 00:26:42right or Christ off of me and when they
- 00:26:44realized that they were in God's
- 00:26:45presence they became scared and that was
- 00:26:48the natural reaction to realize whose
- 00:26:50presence they're in and this seems to be
- 00:26:51happening right here they suddenly
- 00:26:53realized something about Jesus and it
- 00:26:55freaks him out that Frank Simha freaks
- 00:26:57them out it's strengthened when we
- 00:26:59realized that this is not them being
- 00:27:02scared of the sea but them being scared
- 00:27:04of the revelation of who Christ is it
- 00:27:06blows him away blows them away now
- 00:27:09what's interesting about this is they
- 00:27:10saw miracles before like I've seen Jesus
- 00:27:12heal people they've seen him exorcise
- 00:27:13demons they've seen him do all kinds of
- 00:27:14things but this was different this is
- 00:27:16qualitatively different than the other
- 00:27:19miracles they'd seen Jesus do and we get
- 00:27:21that when we realize the Jewish context
- 00:27:22of who it is that calms the storms who
- 00:27:24it is it controls the weather even and
- 00:27:27that's why they say who is this that
- 00:27:30even the wind and sea obey Him like we
- 00:27:33know he's cast out demons we know he
- 00:27:35healed sickness but even the wind and
- 00:27:37sea this is like upir next-level healing
- 00:27:41demons wind and sea like they understand
- 00:27:45the the connotation that's being
- 00:27:46communicated here this isn't new to mark
- 00:27:49again in mark 1 he starts off by calling
- 00:27:52Jesus Yahweh the the whole concept of
- 00:27:53the Son of Man the fact that Jesus has
- 00:27:55the ability to forgive and it's gonna
- 00:27:56continue ramping up in mark 4 we're get
- 00:27:59this miracle here in mark 4 that's
- 00:28:01greater than some of the other stuff
- 00:28:02Jesus has done in the past in mark 5
- 00:28:04we're gonna get an exorcism that's
- 00:28:05greater than any exorcism previously
- 00:28:07recorded right we are legion it's about
- 00:28:10the magnitude of what he's doing to
- 00:28:11demonstrate who he is and his power and
- 00:28:12control mark is about who Jesus is and
- 00:28:15what Jesus's mission is and how both of
- 00:28:18those things were not fully understood
- 00:28:20until it was revealed by Christ that's
- 00:28:23the mystery revealed the identity of
- 00:28:24Christ and the work of Christ in other
- 00:28:26words the gospel Jesus and what he does
- 00:28:28for us this is the thing that's being
- 00:28:30revealed now this led me to down this
- 00:28:34road that's the main point that's the
- 00:28:36main point I think in this passage this
- 00:28:37thing that focuses the identity of
- 00:28:39Christ recognizing Jesus for who he is
- 00:28:42our culture needs to hear this because
- 00:28:44our culture frequently looks at Jesus
- 00:28:47and decides to make him into whatever
- 00:28:51whatever our gut desires and just a
- 00:28:55watered-down version of Christ we don't
- 00:28:59realize that like we're in the boat with
- 00:29:01the Lord of all creation you know and
- 00:29:03there there's a proper sense of
- 00:29:05intimidation there's a proper godly
- 00:29:08godly fear not a terror like like he
- 00:29:10might unexpectedly kill me for no reason
- 00:29:11or something it's not like that it's not
- 00:29:13like we have terror because he has good
- 00:29:15character but there's a reverence for
- 00:29:18his his goodness his power his might
- 00:29:21that we we should have you know that's
- 00:29:24missing in a lot of people's mental
- 00:29:25theology they're they're sort of
- 00:29:27personal the Christian theology there's
- 00:29:28just no reverence for Jesus alike they
- 00:29:31like him but there's that reverence so
- 00:29:34so anyways moving towards application
- 00:29:37and stuff I want to ask this question
- 00:29:39what exactly was wrong with the fear of
- 00:29:42the disciples because I really puzzled
- 00:29:43over this as I was prepping in mark here
- 00:29:45what was wrong with their fear what was
- 00:29:48wrong with their fear in verse 40 Jesus
- 00:29:51says why are you afraid how is it that
- 00:29:53you have no faith this seems to be two
- 00:29:55sides of the same coin it's like hey
- 00:29:56you're afraid because you have no faith
- 00:29:58okay that's an easy answer they were
- 00:30:00lacking faith that's why they were
- 00:30:01scared I can testify that this is my
- 00:30:03life as well that when I'm fearful in
- 00:30:06that kind of fear you know the despair
- 00:30:08kind of fear that it is it is a lack of
- 00:30:10faith it is a lack of trust in God at
- 00:30:13that moment at that time that that is
- 00:30:14the case but what exactly was lacking
- 00:30:18were they supposed to believe they would
- 00:30:20survive like what was it they were
- 00:30:22supposed to believe that they weren't
- 00:30:23believing that's the question I kind of
- 00:30:25puzzled on for a while like what did the
- 00:30:27disciples fail to believe were they
- 00:30:29supposed to be like hey I don't care how
- 00:30:30bad the storm gets I know we're gonna
- 00:30:32survive because Jesus said we're gonna
- 00:30:34cross over so we're gonna cross over it
- 00:30:36that might be it there's something
- 00:30:38you're connecting it to some jesus said
- 00:30:39okay that that's a possibility I find
- 00:30:44this hard to apply into my life because
- 00:30:47God hasn't given me a special word that
- 00:30:48everything of my life is gonna work you
- 00:30:51know and I'm going through something and
- 00:30:53I'm thinking like well where's my lack
- 00:30:54its lack of faith Mike I'm like whoa
- 00:30:55Jesus
- 00:30:56told me I was gonna make it I'd trust
- 00:30:57him but he didn't tell me I was gonna
- 00:30:59make it through this you know I don't
- 00:31:00know what's gonna happen next and so I
- 00:31:02don't have like this word to hang on
- 00:31:04about about future prosperity or making
- 00:31:06it through a scenario I've other words
- 00:31:08to hang on God will work all things
- 00:31:10together for good right to godliness
- 00:31:12kook in Tim but he's with me so let me
- 00:31:14learn to be content with these I know
- 00:31:16he's using the trial in my life for his
- 00:31:17glory so these are things I hang on to
- 00:31:19but I can't be like but I will yet
- 00:31:20succeed because I don't really know
- 00:31:22what's gonna happen next
- 00:31:23and might happen am I not so I find that
- 00:31:26hard to apply into my life unless I
- 00:31:29apply it to the ultimate crossing over
- 00:31:32the ultimate crossing over into his
- 00:31:34presence and then I go care well that
- 00:31:35applies and now that's a storm of life
- 00:31:37for sure you know what I'm gonna be
- 00:31:39heading into his presence for sure
- 00:31:41it could be belief in God regardless of
- 00:31:44peril and this I think applies better to
- 00:31:48me and it fits the context the context
- 00:31:51is they wake Jesus up you don't care
- 00:31:54that we're gonna die not you're not
- 00:31:56helping us it's you don't care and that
- 00:31:59definitely applies to life scenarios
- 00:32:00where you go through struggles and you
- 00:32:01question you know your heart questions
- 00:32:04there's God care
- 00:32:05there's the Lord care about me or what
- 00:32:07I'm going through right now and you
- 00:32:09realize now your faith being tested
- 00:32:10faith isn't about believing I'll be
- 00:32:13successful in whatever I'm doing
- 00:32:15sometimes faith is about believing God
- 00:32:17is good regardless of what I'm going
- 00:32:18through
- 00:32:19trusting in his heart regardless of the
- 00:32:22circumstances at the moment and that I
- 00:32:24find applies all the time I think that's
- 00:32:27going on here teacher do you not care
- 00:32:29that we are perishing why do you have no
- 00:32:31faith what's the thing they should have
- 00:32:33done they should have believed that he
- 00:32:34cared that's one thing they should have
- 00:32:36done I believe that he cared I can maybe
- 00:32:39help this a little bit by asking a
- 00:32:41hypothetical question this helped me as
- 00:32:43I was trying to say it my hypothetical
- 00:32:44question is let's imagine the disciples
- 00:32:46are back in the boat the storms raging
- 00:32:48Jesus is asleep in the stern as he was
- 00:32:50on this pillow there he is sleeping
- 00:32:53they're back in the boat but this time
- 00:32:54they have faith they really have faith
- 00:32:56what do they do differently now that
- 00:32:58they have faith do they just say let
- 00:33:01Jesus sleep let's just keep on paddle
- 00:33:03and we'll be fine we got faith I think
- 00:33:06that maybe they would die if they have
- 00:33:08in their aptitude I'm thinking that the
- 00:33:10the faithful act wasn't don't wake up
- 00:33:12Jesus cuz we're fine I don't think that
- 00:33:15that was the faithful act I think that
- 00:33:18they would have woke Jesus up but they
- 00:33:20wouldn't have said don't you care and
- 00:33:22said they would have said lord help we
- 00:33:26we know we know you can help help us
- 00:33:29save us I think that would have been the
- 00:33:32act of faith so they weren't necessarily
- 00:33:34rebuked for calling out for help or
- 00:33:36deliverance from the scenario that it
- 00:33:38was the rebuke was because of not
- 00:33:39trusting in his character in His
- 00:33:40goodness in his kindness because trials
- 00:33:42can feel overwhelming and you can feel
- 00:33:44like God doesn't care and guess what
- 00:33:47your feelings can be wrong they
- 00:33:49frequently are my feelings are wrong a
- 00:33:51lot and I had to learn this and if they
- 00:33:55like sort of check yourself and be like
- 00:33:56I know I'm feeling this way it's wrong
- 00:33:58but I'm still feeling it but I don't
- 00:33:59trust my feelings right now
- 00:34:00there's a seasons where you can't rely
- 00:34:03on how you feel you have to rely on his
- 00:34:05goodness and his character so I think
- 00:34:07they would have asked him for help you
- 00:34:10could say well no if they had faith they
- 00:34:11would have commanded to see themselves
- 00:34:13Mike and I think that this is not true
- 00:34:18where do we ever see the disciples
- 00:34:20commanding whether and don't be like
- 00:34:24well they never had a chance well no
- 00:34:26they actually they do have chances to
- 00:34:27command the weather Paul the Apostle was
- 00:34:32in a massive storm for days where the
- 00:34:34people on the ship were like we're going
- 00:34:36to die they despaired of life they're
- 00:34:38like let's just Chuck the Chuck the
- 00:34:40prisoners over boards they'll get it so
- 00:34:41they don't escape they'd already thrown
- 00:34:42the tackle off the board they'd already
- 00:34:44done all these changes to the ship lost
- 00:34:46a lot of revenue and I thought we're all
- 00:34:48gonna die why didn't pol at any point
- 00:34:50just get up and be like peace be still
- 00:34:52I dare say because he doesn't have we
- 00:34:56don't inherit this power over weather
- 00:34:58like some people want to say that we
- 00:35:01have I don't think that's a biblical
- 00:35:02thing I don't think that that if I just
- 00:35:04had enough faith you know I think if God
- 00:35:06tells me he's gonna do that and inspires
- 00:35:09my heart with faith trust him for it
- 00:35:10then I'm gonna go for it but I'm gonna
- 00:35:12trust him to do that I don't think it's
- 00:35:13like a power that resides in me to stir
- 00:35:15up and force the weather I've tried I
- 00:35:18can't even get a light switch to flip on
- 00:35:19and off like that so so when Paul was
- 00:35:24going
- 00:35:24to this in acts 27 he never commands the
- 00:35:27weather instead he says this he receives
- 00:35:30a message from an angel and he says this
- 00:35:31in acts 27 23 for this very night an
- 00:35:35angel of God to whom I belong and whom I
- 00:35:37serve stood before me saying do not be
- 00:35:39afraid Paul you must stand before Caesar
- 00:35:41and behold God has granted you all those
- 00:35:43who are sailing with you therefore keep
- 00:35:45up your courage men for I believe God
- 00:35:47that it will turn out exactly as I've
- 00:35:50been told but we must run aground on a
- 00:35:52certain island we're gonna actually run
- 00:35:54aground the ship's gonna run the ground
- 00:35:56the storms gonna play out and finish
- 00:35:57what it's doing there's no like he had
- 00:35:59it he other words Paul has faith he has
- 00:36:01a word from God but it's not to stop the
- 00:36:03storm was just to weather it out and
- 00:36:04wait it out and we're gonna be okay
- 00:36:06and so I don't think that the act of
- 00:36:08faith would be for them to command the
- 00:36:10weather I don't think that's in the
- 00:36:11passage I bring this up because I hear
- 00:36:13people say this on television so yeah if
- 00:36:18they had faith they simply would not
- 00:36:20have said God you don't care you don't
- 00:36:23care Jesus you don't care about what I'm
- 00:36:24going through that's the lack of faith
- 00:36:26that's the challenge of faith I give you
- 00:36:28one more support for this in the book of
- 00:36:29Acts
- 00:36:30AGGA bus is a prophet and he's speaking
- 00:36:32prophetically to the church in the book
- 00:36:34of Acts and he prophesized that it'll be
- 00:36:35famine in the land some sort of major
- 00:36:37famine so the church gathers resources
- 00:36:39and they send it to Jerusalem resources
- 00:36:42to help the Saints there who were going
- 00:36:43through this hardship and famine why on
- 00:36:46earth didn't they just command it away
- 00:36:48well they because that's not how it
- 00:36:51works I mean it'd be cool if God just
- 00:36:54gave us all superpowers
- 00:36:57it wouldn't even require faith anymore
- 00:36:59right we just could command everything
- 00:37:00all the time no hardship whatsoever
- 00:37:03right I I just I command myself arrays I
- 00:37:06command my my back pain to disappear I
- 00:37:09command my my family it all gets saved
- 00:37:13and you just I just command everything I
- 00:37:14wouldn't need faith I would just be
- 00:37:16living the my own sort of creation world
- 00:37:20like we're all playing some sort of
- 00:37:21modified Minecraft thing all right so
- 00:37:24anyway think about that I think there's
- 00:37:28a perfect example of the kind of faith
- 00:37:30they should have had in Daniel chapter 3
- 00:37:32I love this Shadrach Meshach and
- 00:37:34Abednego you know the story right these
- 00:37:36three are about to be thrown into the
- 00:37:37fiery furnace
- 00:37:38and here's what they say to
- 00:37:39Nebuchadnezzar and it would sound like a
- 00:37:40contradiction to some but it's not if
- 00:37:42you understand what it means to have
- 00:37:43faith in a scenario like this
- 00:37:45Daniel 3:17 they say because he's like
- 00:37:48I'm gonna destroy you no one can stop me
- 00:37:49they say in verse 17 if it be so our God
- 00:37:53whom we serve is able to deliver us from
- 00:37:55the furnace of blazing fire and he will
- 00:37:58deliver us out of your hand O king
- 00:38:00there's that proclamation of faith right
- 00:38:02God will deliver us but they go on but
- 00:38:05even if he doesn't did you ever catch
- 00:38:08when they said that I do but even if he
- 00:38:10doesn't let it be known to you O king
- 00:38:12that we are not going to serve your gods
- 00:38:14or worship the golden image that you've
- 00:38:16set up this but even if he doesn't
- 00:38:19that's serious faith you know what I
- 00:38:24think God's gonna deliver me from this
- 00:38:25thing I'm going through but I'll tell
- 00:38:26you what even if he doesn't I still
- 00:38:27trust him
- 00:38:28I still rest in his promises and in His
- 00:38:30goodness and in his character and
- 00:38:32there's an act of faith there's an act
- 00:38:34of faith I think is that's fearlessness
- 00:38:40okay now I want to talk about the
- 00:38:42allegory allegory sing the allegories
- 00:38:45ations as you see I am I am definitely
- 00:38:47cool with saying hey you go through
- 00:38:48storms of life and this does apply to
- 00:38:50that but I think the main points the
- 00:38:51identity of Jesus the secondary point is
- 00:38:53about these trials we go through the
- 00:38:55question though is how far can we take
- 00:38:57this passage in an in the sense of
- 00:38:59allegory is it even fair for me to be
- 00:39:00like their storms equal your storms in
- 00:39:02some sense can I say that and I think we
- 00:39:05can't actually in Isaiah 43 there's an
- 00:39:06example of this you know Israel's gone
- 00:39:09through literal physical storms but
- 00:39:11Isaiah 43 applies it to metaphorical
- 00:39:13storms it's interesting Isaiah 43 verse
- 00:39:151 and 2 but now thus says the Lord your
- 00:39:18Creator Oh Jacob and he who formed you O
- 00:39:20Israel do not fear for I have redeemed
- 00:39:21you I have called you by name in your
- 00:39:23mind when you pass through the waters I
- 00:39:26will be with you and through the rivers
- 00:39:29they will not overflow you and when you
- 00:39:31walk through the fire you will not be
- 00:39:33scorched nor will the flame burn you
- 00:39:34God's past deliverances of the people of
- 00:39:37Israel like Shadrach Meshach and
- 00:39:38Abednego like them going through the
- 00:39:40through the the Red Sea the crossing
- 00:39:44these things are taken as as allegory
- 00:39:46that God is with you and God will
- 00:39:48protect you and God will take care of
- 00:39:49you
- 00:39:50that's the allegory 40 is real the
- 00:39:52application is directly to them but I do
- 00:39:54think it's fair to say that the events
- 00:39:57that we read about are examples to apply
- 00:39:59to our lives that is something we should
- 00:40:00do the question is how far can we take
- 00:40:02it can I say Jesus will always call my
- 00:40:06storm we're like well no sometimes I'm
- 00:40:08gonna die in this storm like actually
- 00:40:11pass away like I'll get an illness that
- 00:40:12doesn't go away and I'll go to I'll go
- 00:40:14to my deathbed and I'll be like well he
- 00:40:16does something better than calming the
- 00:40:17storm he delivers me for to eternal life
- 00:40:20in his presence so I'm not we're not
- 00:40:22saying you can apply it in that sense
- 00:40:23simplistic way of God will always stop
- 00:40:26whatever really bugs me that obviously
- 00:40:28is not I don't think I think we flatten
- 00:40:31out God's plan for our lives when we say
- 00:40:32stuff like that so I see some truth in
- 00:40:36this asleep in the storm thing some say
- 00:40:41though when another application is Jesus
- 00:40:43is asleep in the boat and if he's asleep
- 00:40:46he's asleep because he's very calm and
- 00:40:48collected and Jesus was always calm and
- 00:40:51collected he was such a peaceful person
- 00:40:52he was such a peaceful man always calm
- 00:40:54and collected and therefore when I'm in
- 00:40:56the middle of stress and trials I should
- 00:40:57always be calm and collected and I just
- 00:41:01want to say like all it says is he was
- 00:41:05asleep all that other stuff I just added
- 00:41:08didn't I like it the other points on
- 00:41:10drawing from the text I'm drawing from
- 00:41:12the text right he says why are you
- 00:41:13fearful they said don't you care about
- 00:41:15us so I'm teaching on these points
- 00:41:16because they're right there in the text
- 00:41:17but there's nothing about Jesus being
- 00:41:19calm and collected what if he was just
- 00:41:20tired I mean we frequently would go all
- 00:41:24night in prayer he had just taught the
- 00:41:26crowds who were cramming in around him
- 00:41:28for who knows how long the evening comes
- 00:41:30and he crashes he's not that he's not
- 00:41:32the boat guy so he's sleeping while
- 00:41:33they're doing the work because that's
- 00:41:35not his job it's not his focus
- 00:41:37he might it has been really tired I've
- 00:41:40known people who sleep when they work
- 00:41:42hard and then they sleep they're out you
- 00:41:44know talking about what they could sleep
- 00:41:45like on in any circumstance I'm the
- 00:41:47opposite of this person right I just lay
- 00:41:50there not sleep and not sleep in fact I
- 00:41:52started exercising not too long ago and
- 00:41:54it actually helped me sleep so little
- 00:41:56help for you if you can't sleep start
- 00:41:57exercising more
- 00:41:59I know that's not the pill you wanted
- 00:42:01but I put it but it helps um so it's
- 00:42:06possible Jesus is just tired he's just
- 00:42:07sleeping and if you want to say Jesus
- 00:42:08was always calm and collected like no
- 00:42:10matter how bad things were around him he
- 00:42:11was always like a little a small grin
- 00:42:13you know and he was like I don't worry
- 00:42:15guys don't worry don't worry it's all
- 00:42:17good it's all good
- 00:42:18well there's times where Jesus is just
- 00:42:20in English right in the Garden of
- 00:42:23Gethsemane he's in anguish listen to
- 00:42:25what it says in mark same book verses
- 00:42:27chapter 14 verse 33 and 34 and he took
- 00:42:31with him Peter and James and John and
- 00:42:32began to be distressed and troubled
- 00:42:35that's Jesus he was distressed in
- 00:42:37troubled and he said to them my soul is
- 00:42:39deeply grieved to the point of death
- 00:42:41remain here and keep watch now Jesus was
- 00:42:45not scared like fearful like Oh what's
- 00:42:48gonna happen next I don't know he just
- 00:42:49knew that there was major suffering and
- 00:42:51hardship coming his way and he was aware
- 00:42:53of this and it was unpleasant so I don't
- 00:42:56have to like have this artificial peace
- 00:42:58I can be like I'm in anguish but I still
- 00:43:01trust God alright I'm struck down but
- 00:43:04I'm not destroyed we are we're we're
- 00:43:07living that situation so some I think
- 00:43:10they go too far with this about Jesus
- 00:43:12I've heard of teaching and I've heard it
- 00:43:14it and I'm gonna mention it the where
- 00:43:15I've heard it from because I've heard it
- 00:43:17repeatedly now but Bill Johnson from
- 00:43:21Bethel Church I would take exception to
- 00:43:24his interpretation of this passage with
- 00:43:26Jesus in the boat he says that Jesus had
- 00:43:29peace that's why he was asleep he was
- 00:43:30asleep in the boat because he had peace
- 00:43:32he was able to speak peace into the
- 00:43:34storm because he had peace to give like
- 00:43:37he tapped into some sort of peace thing
- 00:43:39that he has and he sort of let it out
- 00:43:42right he released that they liked the
- 00:43:44term release very a lot in this circle
- 00:43:46he released peace and the idea is that
- 00:43:49Jesus and to quote Bill Johnson he says
- 00:43:51Jesus lived in a realm of peace he was
- 00:43:54living in a realm of peace and I don't
- 00:43:56know what a realm of pieces or how to
- 00:43:57live there I think that I think that now
- 00:43:59we're getting very far away from Jesus
- 00:44:01was asleep that's all you read and now
- 00:44:04he's living in a realm there's a whole
- 00:44:05realm called peace now and you can live
- 00:44:06there somehow and and then you can
- 00:44:08access and I'm like this is all extra
- 00:44:09biblical stuff we're just adding things
- 00:44:10here that aren't in the text here's a
- 00:44:12quote from Bill Johnson he says when
- 00:44:14Jesus spoke peace to the storm it sat
- 00:44:16down he had the peace because he rested
- 00:44:19in conflict he did so by releasing what
- 00:44:22was within him until it redefined his
- 00:44:24environment this I would say is allegory
- 00:44:29to the point of bringing new teachings
- 00:44:31that aren't in the text of Scripture at
- 00:44:33all
- 00:44:34because the application he's going to
- 00:44:36give you is that if you have this kind
- 00:44:37of peace you can also do miraculous
- 00:44:38things it ties in with another teaching
- 00:44:41they have that um that you can't give
- 00:44:43what you don't have and even God
- 00:44:45according to their rules God doesn't
- 00:44:47even allowed to give things he doesn't
- 00:44:48have so God can't give disease because
- 00:44:51God's not diseased they're like well God
- 00:44:54gave tumors to the Philistines and God
- 00:44:57doesn't have tumors so I don't think
- 00:44:58that that rule applies to God he can
- 00:45:00give you a headache without having a
- 00:45:01headache if he wants God can do whatever
- 00:45:02he wants so it just seems strange and
- 00:45:05and this is where we're just going way
- 00:45:06beyond the text of Scripture
- 00:45:08it's cramming teaching into the Bible
- 00:45:09that just it may seem nice and it may be
- 00:45:11encouraging question is is it true we
- 00:45:14don't gauge the truthfulness of a
- 00:45:15teaching based on how nice it is but
- 00:45:17based upon whether it's biblically sound
- 00:45:20or not because to all this I could say
- 00:45:22what if Jesus was just tired and the
- 00:45:26point of the passage then becomes our
- 00:45:27trusting in God in trials not our trying
- 00:45:31to in you know become in a realm of
- 00:45:33peace where we have this sort of
- 00:45:35qualitative peace that can we can sort
- 00:45:37of let out and then it changes our
- 00:45:39environment and all that kind of thing
- 00:45:41there's elements of truth to this but
- 00:45:42it's way beyond probably what's
- 00:45:44warranted by reality or scripture the
- 00:45:48passage doesn't actually tell us why he
- 00:45:49was sleeping so in summary in summary in
- 00:45:52conclusion the right application is
- 00:45:55number one Jesus is divine Jesus is
- 00:46:00divine the divinity the glory the the
- 00:46:02magnificence of Jesus and the who he is
- 00:46:05who is this man he's divine and we
- 00:46:08should not always go to the text asking
- 00:46:09where am I in this passage we should ask
- 00:46:13what is it revealing what truth is it
- 00:46:14revealing to me then you can apply it to
- 00:46:16you if we start with the revelation of
- 00:46:18Jesus then the application s comes
- 00:46:20naturally and the application to us
- 00:46:22point number two is don't you
- 00:46:25year with that kind of terror trust in
- 00:46:28him
- 00:46:28trust in him I obviously think getting
- 00:46:31your eyes in a sense so that you're not
- 00:46:34just looking at this to the storm or the
- 00:46:36situation of the hardship of your life
- 00:46:37right now but you're also looking at the
- 00:46:38goodness of God and the character of God
- 00:46:40and the love of God so that you won't
- 00:46:41pray Lord did you even care because now
- 00:46:45you know it's all you of little faith
- 00:46:47trusting God's character trusting in the
- 00:46:50who in the middle of the what that's
- 00:46:52that's massive you're never gonna
- 00:46:54outgrow this lesson you're just gonna
- 00:46:56keep learning it over and over again in
- 00:46:57your life to trust in God and His
- 00:47:00goodness no matter what the scenario is
- 00:47:03no matter what's going on because
- 00:47:05circumstances are gonna constantly push
- 00:47:07this button to find out where your faith
- 00:47:10is and how much trust you have in him
- 00:47:12now if you feel like you failed so the
- 00:47:16disciples right here they failed and
- 00:47:19Jesus use it as a lesson and sometimes
- 00:47:23you're going through trials and you find
- 00:47:24yourself doubting even God's own
- 00:47:25goodness it's revealing that you've
- 00:47:28always had a problem with faith and God
- 00:47:31knew it I want to I want to kind of say
- 00:47:35like hey it's okay get up learn the
- 00:47:37lesson put your trust in who he is go
- 00:47:40from being in awe of how bad situations
- 00:47:42are to being in awe of how amazing God
- 00:47:44is His goodness let's pray father we
- 00:47:50we're recognizing right now that this
- 00:47:53does apply very directly into our lives
- 00:47:55into our situations storms so to speak
- 00:48:00we want to trust in you we want to trust
- 00:48:03in your goodness God you are the
- 00:48:06grounding of all reality you you
- 00:48:10couldn't be less than wonderfully good
- 00:48:12and trusting trustworthy your character
- 00:48:18and your love and your compassion Lord
- 00:48:21we want to trust that regardless of
- 00:48:23temporary pain or hardship or unexpected
- 00:48:26suffering that we might be going through
- 00:48:27and so Lord we say and we proclaim you
- 00:48:30are good you are holy
- 00:48:32we're in awe of you and we do appeal for
- 00:48:35help
- 00:48:36in our trials help and assistance in the
- 00:48:38suffering and the pain and all that kind
- 00:48:39of stuff but Lord we want to learn the
- 00:48:40lesson you were trying to teach the
- 00:48:42disciples and by virtue of them trying
- 00:48:44to teach us that we would trust you and
- 00:48:48your goodness and your character and
- 00:48:51realize that our situation is sometimes
- 00:48:53just being used by the enemy to get us
- 00:48:55to distrust who you are like you try
- 00:48:58with the job but may we be those who
- 00:49:01just humbly say yeah I don't understand
- 00:49:02what's going on but I know God is good
- 00:49:04and I trust in him and I wait on him in
- 00:49:07Jesus name Amen
