this is a recent shot I got that I
  • 00:00:05
really like I mean look at those clouds
  • 00:00:07
what may surprise some is that this was
  • 00:00:09
shot on an iPhone this here is my setup
  • 00:00:12
that I've been using recently and in
  • 00:00:14
today's video I want to take a closer
  • 00:00:15
look at it and show you what exactly
  • 00:00:17
this is why I'm using it and share
  • 00:00:19
things I've learned on the way while
  • 00:00:21
    using this
  • 00:00:22
    setup smoking
  • 00:00:25
    RS Wherever You Are
  • 00:00:31
it's just about closing time to begin
  • 00:00:35
with let's take a Clos look at what the
  • 00:00:36
setup consists of this here is the main
  • 00:00:39
component the iPhone 15 Pro back a year
  • 00:00:42
ago when the iPhone 15 came out I was
  • 00:00:44
not really following the event or
  • 00:00:46
anything because new phone releases are
  • 00:00:47
not particularly something I follow that
  • 00:00:49
closely however within the film making
  • 00:00:52
space this phone caused some noise it
  • 00:00:55
got a lot of attention so that even I
  • 00:00:56
found out about it as far as I know this
  • 00:00:58
phone was a little underwhelming it
  • 00:01:00
seemed like the only new thing about it
  • 00:01:02
was that it has USBC oh and the action
  • 00:01:04
button I guess there was one very
  • 00:01:07
    exciting new feature though which
  • 00:01:08
however the average phone user simply
  • 00:01:10
doesn't care about but within the film
  • 00:01:12
making space this was a huge deal the
  • 00:01:15
new iPhone is capable of recording Apple
  • 00:01:17
prores 422 in log in case you don't know
  • 00:01:20
what log is it's just a mode in which a
  • 00:01:22
camera films to capture as much data as
  • 00:01:24
possible it's usually very low contrast
  • 00:01:25
and gray looking because it's optimized
  • 00:01:27
for post- production this is for many
  • 00:01:30
    Irrelevant for some interesting others
  • 00:01:32
exciting but for me this was possibly a
  • 00:01:36
game changer now why would I be so
  • 00:01:39
excited about the iPhone 15 being
  • 00:01:41
capable of shooting log footage I think
  • 00:01:43
this comes down to what you as a
  • 00:01:45
filmmaker or Creator value some people
  • 00:01:47
    value absolute top-notch quality others
  • 00:01:49
value a good deal so a camera that
  • 00:01:51
shoots good video while not costing as
  • 00:01:53
much as a cinema camera something that I
  • 00:01:55
value very highly is usability and
  • 00:01:57
convenience I talked a lot about this in
  • 00:02:00
regards to my Photography in this video
  • 00:02:02
about my love for the Lumix gx80 one of
  • 00:02:04
my key points is that I'm trying to
  • 00:02:06
    minimize resistance in my photographic
  • 00:02:08
process and the same goes for video I
  • 00:02:10
don't mind if the video is not of
  • 00:02:11
absolute best quality it is way more
  • 00:02:14
important to me that I enjoy the process
  • 00:02:16
because that will lead me to making more
  • 00:02:18
things you simply can't beat someone
  • 00:02:19
who's having fun that is why I shoot my
  • 00:02:21
photography behind the scenes video with
  • 00:02:23
a GoPro on my head and just try to push
  • 00:02:25
the GoPro footage as far as I can this
  • 00:02:27
becomes all the more relevant when
  • 00:02:29
    traveling
  • 00:02:32
    [Music]
  • 00:02:35
while traveling in Japan last year I
  • 00:02:37
brought my Sony along for the first trip
  • 00:02:39
and it only took a day for me to be fed
  • 00:02:42
up with it and not use it anymore
  • 00:02:44
instead I began to Simply use my phone
  • 00:02:46
back then the iPhone 11 and for the rest
  • 00:02:49
of my time in Japan last year I ended up
  • 00:02:51
using that iPhone 11 a lot because it
  • 00:02:53
was so easy however the dropping quality
  • 00:02:55
was just on the border of being too much
  • 00:02:58
the footage was only really just good
  • 00:03:00
enough for me luckily I was able to push
  • 00:03:03
it pretty far with a lot of color
  • 00:03:04
grading however it still had that
  • 00:03:06
    oversharpened slightly ugly iPhone look
  • 00:03:09
so despite the slightly painful loss and
  • 00:03:11
quality the ease of use I gained was
  • 00:03:13
worth it to me and then came the iPhone
  • 00:03:16
15 the fact that this can film in log
  • 00:03:18
gave me the hope that this might close
  • 00:03:20
the gap of quality for me this could be
  • 00:03:23
    the solution to that oversharpened
  • 00:03:25
footage that I so disliked and so after
  • 00:03:27
some research I decided to get the phone
  • 00:03:29
just a couple months ago and oh am I
  • 00:03:32
    happy I

    [Music]
  • 00:03:53
did it is amazing I'm not saying it's
  • 00:03:57
    perfect but certainly amazing the
  • 00:03:59
footage is indeed a game changer in my
  • 00:04:01
opinion I think the footage looks
  • 00:04:03
    fantastic especially considering that it
  • 00:04:05
comes from a bloody phone but it's not
  • 00:04:08
only that that makes the Iphone a great
  • 00:04:09
video camera for me personally this log
  • 00:04:11
footage feature was just the last
  • 00:04:13
missing piece of the puzzle there are
  • 00:04:15
mainly three other factors that I really
  • 00:04:18
    [Music]
  • 00:04:20
like firstly the microphone there are
  • 00:04:23
microphones that you can attach to your
  • 00:04:25
phone to get better audio but that
  • 00:04:27
defeats the purpose for me I'm trying to
  • 00:04:28
keep my setup minimal and so I'm very
  • 00:04:30
happy about the fact that the iPhones
  • 00:04:32
built- in microphones are really good
  • 00:04:34
they are nowhere near Great or even
  • 00:04:36
perfect but for my purposes they are
  • 00:04:38
    good
  • 00:04:40
    [Music]
  • 00:04:51
    enough secondly the lenses this
  • 00:04:54
particular phone is the iPhone 15 Pro
  • 00:04:56
which comes with a standard lens a wide
  • 00:04:58
lens and a 3X zoom lens by the way the
  • 00:05:01
15 Pro Max version comes with a 5x lens
  • 00:05:03
not just a 3X I love the focal length
  • 00:05:07
the standard lens I believe they call a
  • 00:05:09
24 mm however in video mode when
  • 00:05:11
    shooting 4K with image stabilization
  • 00:05:14
it's cropped and to me it looks fairly
  • 00:05:16
close to my favorite focal length 35 mm
  • 00:05:19
which is great for me at least the wide
  • 00:05:22
lens is beautifully wide and the 3x lens
  • 00:05:24
is an impressive Zoom that is really
  • 00:05:26
useful I find I'm not sure but I think
  • 00:05:28
the pro Max is 5x Zoom might even be a
  • 00:05:31
bit too much for me I'm just speculating
  • 00:05:32
though I haven't actually tried it
  • 00:05:34
thirdly the stabilization the iPhone has
  • 00:05:37
amazing image stabilization by default I
  • 00:05:40
can easily get nearly static shots or
  • 00:05:42
moving shots with all three lenses
  • 00:05:44
handheld it always looks good though it
  • 00:05:46
is noticeable that the standard lens is
  • 00:05:48
the best which I can even use on a train
  • 00:05:50
or a car and get smooth footage so that
  • 00:05:52
summarizes why I like to shoot with the
  • 00:05:54
iPhone and why I bought the iPhone 15
  • 00:05:56
Pro now let's have a closer look at the
  • 00:05:58

for over 5 years now and I'm still so
  • 00:06:15
happy with it mainly because it's so

easy I use my Squarespace website as a

  • 00:06:34
of a template you can basically build
  • 00:06:35
the entire basis of your website with
  • 00:06:37
the help of an AI tool which will ask
  • 00:06:39

if you prefer to start off from a
  • 00:06:43

being creative while making a website
  • 00:06:57
not feel slow or tedious even though I'm
  • 00:06:59

  • 00:07:14
    for continuously supporting the channel
  • 00:07:15
and my work here I really appreciate
  • 00:07:19
    itel the layers of
  • 00:07:24
the so as said this is the iPhone 15 Pro
  • 00:07:27
not the Max and not the normal version
  • 00:07:29
import important note here I believe you
  • 00:07:30
only get the proor log feature with the
  • 00:07:32
iPhone 15 Pro or the pro Max not with
  • 00:07:35
the normal one then the red case I'm
  • 00:07:37
using is by moment it's simply their
  • 00:07:40
iPhone 15 Pro moment case I'm actually
  • 00:07:42
the type of guy who buys those huge
  • 00:07:44
phone cases that look like I'm taking my
  • 00:07:46
phone on a military Mission or something
  • 00:07:48
however this time I bought this here the
  • 00:07:50
moment case because I needed this here
  • 00:07:53
this is not just a frame it's actually a
  • 00:07:55
Connecting Point to attach moment lenses
  • 00:07:58
or adapters and I wanted this to attach
  • 00:08:00
a filter adapter so that I can use
  • 00:08:02
filters on my phone this here is the
  • 00:08:05
moment 67 mm filter adapter which allows
  • 00:08:07
me to attach 67 mm filters to the phone
  • 00:08:11
my goal is to push this phone as far as
  • 00:08:13
I can when it comes to visuals while
  • 00:08:14
still staying convenient and so I have
  • 00:08:17
two filters actually on the phone the
  • 00:08:19
first filter is this red filter at the
  • 00:08:21
bottom this is the moment cinebloom
  • 00:08:23
filter at 10% strength by the way this
  • 00:08:25
video is not sponsored by moment but
  • 00:08:27
full of their stuff moment if you're
  • 00:08:28
watching this just saying I love your
  • 00:08:31
stuff I'd love to collap anyway what
  • 00:08:33
this filter does is slightly diffuse the
  • 00:08:35
light which gives it a bit of a bloom
  • 00:08:36
    especially when shooting contrasty
  • 00:08:38
bright scenes with backlight I like to
  • 00:08:40
use this not only with my phone but also
  • 00:08:41
with my Sony camera it simply softens
  • 00:08:43
the footage a little which I find quite
  • 00:08:45
pleasing more important however is the
  • 00:08:47
second filter that I have simply stacked
  • 00:08:49
on top this is the moment variable ND
  • 00:08:52
filter that goes from nd4 to
  • 00:08:55
nd32 this solves one of the main issues
  • 00:08:58
I had when filming with the iPhone 11
  • 00:09:00
    apart from the oversharpening something
  • 00:09:01
that also bugged me was the high shutter
  • 00:09:03
speed I was forced to shoot with because
  • 00:09:05
I was shooting automatically and without
  • 00:09:07
an ND filter that makes especially
  • 00:09:09
moving shots look quite choppy and just
  • 00:09:11
not pleasant this is something I
  • 00:09:13
    begrudgingly accepted last year however
  • 00:09:16
this year I decided to tackle that issue
  • 00:09:18
with an ND filter and so now on very
  • 00:09:20
bright sunny days I can simply set the
  • 00:09:22
ND filter to nd32 and still get some
  • 00:09:24
nice motion blur however in Darker
  • 00:09:26
lighting situations an nd32 is too much
  • 00:09:29
so I simply set the ND to nd4 for
  • 00:09:32
example I'm not all too exact with this
  • 00:09:34
I just sort of guess what would be the
  • 00:09:36
optimal ND setting by the way this
  • 00:09:38
adapter thing is not perfect it does
  • 00:09:40
wiggle around a little so I sometimes
  • 00:09:42
find myself hoping that it would be a
  • 00:09:43
bit tighter but overall it's still all
  • 00:09:46
    [Music]
  • 00:09:50
right now while I chose the iPhone 15
  • 00:09:53
Pro as a travel video camera for its
  • 00:09:55
convenience and size and actively chose
  • 00:09:57
to not attach a microphone I do accept
  • 00:10:00
the use of filters even though they are
  • 00:10:01
    somewhat inconvenient because they're so
  • 00:10:03
big moment actually has a small square
  • 00:10:06
version of both filters which I really
  • 00:10:07
want to try out however I'm afraid I
  • 00:10:09
can't stack them like I've been doing
  • 00:10:11
with my round filters which is a Pity
  • 00:10:13
because then I can only use one filter
  • 00:10:16
however for the sake of even more
  • 00:10:17
    convenience I might relinquish the
  • 00:10:18
cinebloom filter and just go with the
  • 00:10:20
square n d filter I'm still figuring out
  • 00:10:22
the final form of this setup anyway that
  • 00:10:25
was an overview of my setup that I'm
  • 00:10:28
currently using when on the the go in
  • 00:10:29
Japan I do have my Sony with me of
  • 00:10:31
course for shots like these in which I'm
  • 00:10:33
simply sitting down and talking to you
  • 00:10:35
but for my shoots when I'm out and about
  • 00:10:37
I leave the big camera at home and just
  • 00:10:39
work with the GoPro on my head and the
  • 00:10:41
    phone in my
  • 00:10:47
pocket the last step to push the mobile
  • 00:10:50
footage as far as possible is of course
  • 00:10:52
the color grading I do a simple color
  • 00:10:53
correction and then color grade the
  • 00:10:55
footage as I usually would which has
  • 00:10:57
been working great lastly I also add
  • 00:10:59
some grain to the footage which I think
  • 00:11:00
is a nice little detail which further
  • 00:11:02
eliminates the digital sharpness of the
  • 00:11:04
iPhone while the log footage is way
  • 00:11:06
better than the normal iPhone footage I
  • 00:11:08
do still feel like it's a tad bit too
  • 00:11:09
sharp at times so the grain helps me out
  • 00:11:11
with that by the way if you want to see
  • 00:11:13
in more detail how exactly I colorgrade
  • 00:11:15
my iPhone footage and push it to its
  • 00:11:17
limit I actually published a tutorial on
  • 00:11:19
my patreon a month or two ago if you're
  • 00:11:21
interested there's a link in my
  • 00:11:22
description finally I would like to
  • 00:11:24
share some lessons that I learned on the
  • 00:11:25
way just some technical tips and
  • 00:11:27
mistakes to avoid windsh shooting with
  • 00:11:29
    this
  • 00:11:31
    [Music]
  • 00:11:36
setup my first learning is that the
  • 00:11:38
lenses are of varying quality and
  • 00:11:40
    require different ND settings the
  • 00:11:42
standard lens is the best with the
  • 00:11:44
lowest amount of noise and the best low
  • 00:11:46
light capabilities the wide angle lens
  • 00:11:48
is the second best here I've learned to
  • 00:11:50
be careful with the ND though this lens
  • 00:11:52
tends to become noisy easier and doesn't
  • 00:11:54
require as strong of an N when shooting
  • 00:11:56
in bright light so when shooting on a
  • 00:11:58
bright day are usually set my ND to nd32
  • 00:12:01
when using the normal lens but when
  • 00:12:02
using the wide lens I usually set it to
  • 00:12:04
either nd16 or even just nd8 depending
  • 00:12:07
on the brightness the 3x zoom lens comes
  • 00:12:10
in last it's a little soft and quite
  • 00:12:12
prone to noise so when using this lens I
  • 00:12:15
set the ND filter to four or even take
  • 00:12:17
it off if it's not too inconvenient in
  • 00:12:18
the moment seeing as this lens is pretty
  • 00:12:20
soft anyway I don't feel much of a need
  • 00:12:22
to use the C Bloom filter when using
  • 00:12:24
this lens also here's one more thing to
  • 00:12:27
look out for when shooting with the wide
  • 00:12:28
lens because I'm stacking two filters on
  • 00:12:31
top of each other the ND filter
  • 00:12:32
sometimes Peaks into frame when I shake
  • 00:12:34
the camera strongly however when the
  • 00:12:36
shot is steady it'll be fine thanks to
  • 00:12:38
the crop of the stabilization oh by the
  • 00:12:40
way the iPhone does show you a 2X lens
  • 00:12:42
however I don't really use that because
  • 00:12:44
as far as I know it's just a digital
  • 00:12:46
Zoom not an optical zoom so that results
  • 00:12:47
in a loss of quality then one more thing
  • 00:12:50
that I'm still in the process of
  • 00:12:51
figuring out are the microphones the
  • 00:12:54
iPhone has three microphones I think and
  • 00:12:56
    it changes between them automatically
  • 00:12:57
however it appears to me that when using
  • 00:12:59
the 3x lens the iPhone always chooses
  • 00:13:01
the front mic which however is covered
  • 00:13:04
by the filters and sadly sounds pretty
  • 00:13:06
    [Music]
  • 00:13:10
horrible however when shooting with the
  • 00:13:11
normal lens the audio is actually always
  • 00:13:13
great and when shooting with the wide
  • 00:13:14
    lens it's a bit of a mix sometimes it's
  • 00:13:16
good sometimes not so much by the way
  • 00:13:18
one more thing if you really want to
  • 00:13:20
push the camera to its limit I'd
  • 00:13:21
recommend using the Black Magic app
  • 00:13:23
which gives you a bunch of control and
  • 00:13:24
even lets you decide which microphone
  • 00:13:26
the iPhone should use however I simply
  • 00:13:28
want to keep the pro proc this as quick
  • 00:13:29
and easy as possible and so I simply
  • 00:13:31
shoot in the normal camera app with auto
  • 00:13:35
    [Music]
  • 00:13:37
exposure and that is all I have to say
  • 00:13:40
for today I hope this dump of
  • 00:13:41
information was in any way useful to you
  • 00:13:44
I look forward to shooting more and more
  • 00:13:45
with the setup and sharing the results
  • 00:13:47
with you in the future before saying
  • 00:13:48
goodbye I would like to say thank you to
  • 00:13:50

  • 00:13:51
