symbol I sort of got my start in church
  • 00:00:45
and I'm I'm may have mentioned that
  • 00:00:47
maybe in a past thing but uh I started
  • 00:00:50
playing in church when I was 14 it was a
  • 00:00:53
    very Southern
  • 00:00:54
Baptist um church that did hymns except
  • 00:00:58
they had an orchestra and they had a
  • 00:01:00
drum kit and they had all these
  • 00:01:03
instruments um and so at the start there
  • 00:01:08
was it was just a drum kit like in the
  • 00:01:10
choir loft out in the open everything
  • 00:01:14
was exposed it was loud blah blah blah
  • 00:01:16
you know um and then eventually the
  • 00:01:20
trend started to be these things came
  • 00:01:23
out um and so they clear Sonic they got
  • 00:01:28
those uh they basically got two of them
  • 00:01:31
and surrounded me and they were like Ah
  • 00:01:34
that's kind of doing something weird
  • 00:01:35
it's like shooting up in of course it is
  • 00:01:37
because it's reflecting yeah and so they
  • 00:01:40
    topped it off with the
  • 00:01:43
um uh whatever material like that sound
  • 00:01:46
paneling almost yeah sound paneling they
  • 00:01:49
topped me off and then all at that time
  • 00:01:52
this was this was the mid to late 90s
  • 00:01:55
guys so this was different like you
  • 00:01:56
didn't have in ears we had these Hot
  • 00:01:58
Spot monitors yeah some of y'all know
  • 00:02:00
what I'm talking about it had one dial
  • 00:02:02
in the center you turned it up and I
  • 00:02:05
turned all the way that's the only way I
  • 00:02:06
could hear anything and obviously it's
  • 00:02:08
so loud in there I'm not I don't have
  • 00:02:10
any ear protection it's very hot
  • 00:02:14
um and uh did that for a few
  • 00:02:17
years then like you know what this isn't
  • 00:02:19
cutting it so that's when Rolland V
  • 00:02:22
drums came out so they got Rolland V
  • 00:02:23
drums and did away with the Shields and
  • 00:02:26
then I had uh so I played those for a
  • 00:02:28
while and that was just terrible um cuz
  • 00:02:30
    you're playing like traditional church
  • 00:02:32
music on an electronic drum kit just
  • 00:02:35
doesn't really sound great you know just
  • 00:02:39
as I am or you know it it is well as my
  • 00:02:41
soul doesn't sound good on on rolling V
  • 00:02:43
drums so then because my amplifier which
  • 00:02:47
was like a keyboard amp I was turning it
  • 00:02:49
up too loud and I was hitting the thing
  • 00:02:52
so hard that you could hear the Rubber
  • 00:02:54
and the plastic like all the way in the
  • 00:02:57
balcony so then they brought out the
  • 00:03:00
clear Sonic panels again with the
  • 00:03:02
    electronic drums and surrounded me
  • 00:03:05
again and uh you know I'm in high school
  • 00:03:09
you know you have emotions and hormones
  • 00:03:12
are going on so it's it was a very like
  • 00:03:15
ah I don't feel like I'm supposed to be
  • 00:03:17
here nobody likes me I'm too loud all
  • 00:03:20
those you know wo was me things right
  • 00:03:23
    um and
  • 00:03:26
eventually I I made it through that and
  • 00:03:29
    then
  • 00:03:31
um then at the time I was going into
  • 00:03:34
college and there was a couple other
  • 00:03:36
churches that actually hired me to play
  • 00:03:39
for them so I selfishly left the church
  • 00:03:43
I grew up in to go play for money um
  • 00:03:47
which isn't bad like that's what you do
  • 00:03:50
sometimes um but a lot of times it's a
  • 00:03:52
    strictly volunteer thing which is
  • 00:03:54
incredible um so I left to do that and
  • 00:03:59
then my uh the instrumental music
  • 00:04:01
director at my former Church gives me a
  • 00:04:04
call a couple years later said hey we
  • 00:04:07
got real drums out we did away with the
  • 00:04:09
thing like you know they got that out of
  • 00:04:11
    their
  • 00:04:12
system um you come on back we want to
  • 00:04:15
    pay
  • 00:04:16
you and I was like okay so so I came
  • 00:04:20
back and it was great but the funny
  • 00:04:23
thing is is like going through that
  • 00:04:24
whole journey and being the guinea pig
  • 00:04:27
uh which I'm sure some of you have have
  • 00:04:29
felt that and been that um it's not like
  • 00:04:32
a terrible thing to play behind the
  • 00:04:35
glass but it is it it is uh it's a
  • 00:04:38
psychological thing for someone like me
  • 00:04:41
and um so going through all those
  • 00:04:44
changes to come right back to what it
  • 00:04:45
was before which mainly just means
  • 00:04:48
playing dynamically and playing to the
  • 00:04:50
room and not overpowering the band or
  • 00:04:52
overpowering the uh choir if there's
  • 00:04:55
still a choir or the the singers the the
  • 00:04:59
congregation like um it really just all
  • 00:05:04
    boils down
  • 00:05:05
to um and this room is got a lot of you
  • 00:05:08
know it's obviously brick walls on the
  • 00:05:10
side which isn't awesome but they got
  • 00:05:12
all these little sound things carpet
  • 00:05:15
seats you get bodies in here that soaks
  • 00:05:18
up everything so and we're you know
  • 00:05:21
we're not touring with the church
  • 00:05:22
speakers we've got obviously these rigs
  • 00:05:26
that we we brought out with us on this
  • 00:05:27
    Canada run
  • 00:05:30
um but uh it's just playing of the room
  • 00:05:33
and it is hard to do that though when
  • 00:05:35
you've got in ears in obviously you
  • 00:05:37
can't hear the room when you have in
  • 00:05:39
ears in so it's a matter of like getting
  • 00:05:41
to the place where you know based off of
  • 00:05:44
how the drums are feeling to you in your
  • 00:05:46
hands uh how hard you're playing you
  • 00:05:49
know or like kind of I used to kind of
  • 00:05:52
undo an ear like halfway so I could hear
  • 00:05:56
what was what was going on make sure I'm
  • 00:05:58
not like you know too loud for anybody
  • 00:06:01
but you can't please everybody yeah and
  • 00:06:04
the I guess the thing that I learned
  • 00:06:06
from it is that I'm just a vessel within
  • 00:06:10
    the
  • 00:06:11
thing and it was a good sort of um it
  • 00:06:16
was a good exercise on getting my
  • 00:06:19
attitude right you know cuz I wasn't I
  • 00:06:21
wasn't in it for myself I wasn't trying
  • 00:06:23
to just do my own thing anyway but when
  • 00:06:26
you when you get used to it's been you
  • 00:06:30
know 20 some odd years since I've had to
  • 00:06:33
do this it's kind of like a wof you know
  • 00:06:38
kind of throws you back there you know
  • 00:06:40
but uh as you can see like Chris is 7
  • 00:06:44
feet away from me um so it's just got to
  • 00:06:47
you got to make it right sometimes um so
  • 00:06:50
this church was gracious enough to let
  • 00:06:52
us set this up today since I didn't left
  • 00:06:56
my shy baffles at home awesome um but
  • 00:06:59
anyway yeah so we it's it's fun because
  • 00:07:04
this show is not it's not like
  • 00:07:06
a we're basically playing what we play
  • 00:07:09
in arenas in churches so we're not
  • 00:07:12
dumbing down the the song Choices
  • 00:07:16
    dumbing down meaning like diminishing
  • 00:07:19
you know Amplified levels and and uh
  • 00:07:22
intensity yeah so you kind of
  • 00:07:25
like it's it's hard to scale that back
  • 00:07:27
when you're playing you've played these
  • 00:07:28
    songs a certain certain
  • 00:07:30
way um so it's kind of nice to have a
  • 00:07:33
little bit of a barrier to where I'm not
  • 00:07:35
taking people's heads off so we'll see
  • 00:07:38
we'll see what happens tonight but it's
  • 00:07:39
going to be a good time
