- 00:01:00breakdown of the banking industry
- 00:01:03well definitely uh good afternoon

- 00:01:12my name is erica rowell i am the area
- 00:01:14vice president of personal banking and
- 00:01:16the country head for cayman but before i
- 00:01:19do move into a breakdown of the banking
- 00:01:20industry uh jade why don't you introduce
- 00:01:22yourself
- 00:01:25sure good afternoon everyone my name is
- 00:01:27jade wheeler i'm 24 years old i am a
- 00:01:31mobile mortgage specialist with rbc and
- 00:01:33i've been with the business for five
- 00:01:35years
- 00:01:36as a mobile market specialist i assist
- 00:01:38persons with obtaining their home or
- 00:01:40simply just preparing for um that new
- 00:01:43that few
- 00:01:44that that future financial um goal that
- 00:01:47you're working towards
- 00:01:50great thank you so much and so hannah
- 00:01:53you know you have asked a really great
- 00:01:54question around giving a breakdown of
- 00:01:57the mankind industry and it's an
- 00:01:59interesting question um because you know
- 00:02:00one of the most popular industries in
- 00:02:02finance is the banking industry um the
- 00:02:05mike industry includes systems of
- 00:02:08financial institution called banks that
- 00:02:10provides valuable services like storing
- 00:02:12your funds just simply putting
- 00:02:15managing credit as well as facilitating
- 00:02:17transactions so in a nutshell banks can
- 00:02:20help people store and use their money
- 00:02:23the banking industry is also about is
- 00:02:26really valuable to the economy as it
- 00:02:28provides resources for individuals
- 00:02:30families organizations even governments
- 00:02:32for the use of transactions and
- 00:02:34investments
- 00:02:35now
- 00:02:37there are basically three segments of
- 00:02:38banking per se uh we have retail banking
- 00:02:41on personal banking and i think that's
- 00:02:43the one that most of us are familiar
- 00:02:45with uh it involves the deposit accounts
- 00:02:47like your savings and checking accounts
- 00:02:49your mortgages loans credit cards debit
- 00:02:51cards all the things that we know and
- 00:02:54this is where i would have spent most of
- 00:02:56my banking career there's also wholesale
- 00:02:58banking uh where we have business
- 00:03:00banking corporate banking and investment
- 00:03:02banking and then we have a form of
- 00:03:04wealth management uh where you have
- 00:03:07retail brokerage services and asset
- 00:03:09management and you know as one of the
- 00:03:11caribbean's leading diversified
- 00:03:14financial services company rbc provides
- 00:03:17the personal and commercial banking the
- 00:03:19wealth management the corporate banking
- 00:03:21we even have insurances and trusts and
- 00:03:24as i mentioned the asset management
- 00:03:25services that we provide to a wide range
- 00:03:28of clients
- 00:03:30individuals small businesses um
- 00:03:33multinational corporations and and like
- 00:03:35i would have mentioned before
- 00:03:36governments and with you know more than
- 00:03:39100 years of heritage and serving the
- 00:03:42region
- 00:03:43rbc is positioned to give our customers
- 00:03:45access to an expanded network of
- 00:03:47international services and just a
- 00:03:49greater uh geographic reach
- 00:03:52we also have a presence in 10 countries
- 00:03:55and territories across the caribbean the
- 00:03:57north which includes cayman islands
- 00:04:00bahamas and turks and caicos we're also
- 00:04:02located in the south where we have
- 00:04:04trinidad and tobago and barbados and we
- 00:04:06have five branches also located in dutch
- 00:04:09caribbean
- 00:04:10um which is a rhubarb on air curse el
- 00:04:12salvador and syd martin
- 00:04:14and we also serve nearly 1 million
- 00:04:16clients across the caribbean network and
- 00:04:19our regional headquarters is actually
- 00:04:21based in part of spain trinidad and
- 00:04:23tobago so so that's just a brief
- 00:04:25overview of some of the things but i'm
- 00:04:28just so excited uh hannah to to get into
- 00:04:31our discussion this afternoon because i
- 00:04:33just think it's going to add so much
- 00:04:35value to uh the participants on the line
- 00:04:40that's fantastic and the fact that also
- 00:04:44rbc as a whole is
- 00:04:45um in different areas different
- 00:04:47jurisdictions that also gives a bit of
- 00:04:49flexibility as well if somebody is in
- 00:04:51banking and maybe wants to move towards
- 00:04:52a different jurisdiction
- 00:04:55across
- 00:04:56look their career path right they could
- 00:04:58start in cayman but then maybe go to a
- 00:04:59different part of the dutch caribbean or
- 00:05:01could go to north america right it
- 00:05:02really gives different options and
- 00:05:04that's something that happens a lot when
- 00:05:05you're working with a global
- 00:05:07firm or a global company um
- 00:05:10so
- 00:05:11just on that moving on to
- 00:05:14kind of the breakdown i kind of want to
- 00:05:16know a little bit more about you both
- 00:05:19and how you got started into the
- 00:05:20industry so where did you start um erica
- 00:05:25yeah so i'll i guess i'll start with
- 00:05:27this one and and then we can go on to
- 00:05:29jade you know my journey from novice to
- 00:05:31expert started over
- 00:05:3329 years ago with another canadian
- 00:05:36financial institution in the bahamas i
- 00:05:38went from being a part-time teller or
- 00:05:41what we now call at rbc a financial
- 00:05:43solution associate
- 00:05:45and as you can see that name has evolved
- 00:05:47over the past several decades to now the
- 00:05:50area vice president of personal banking
- 00:05:51and country i became in
- 00:05:53i knew very early on i was looking for
- 00:05:56stability
- 00:05:58just a good working environment with
- 00:06:00reliable hours those things were
- 00:06:01important to me
- 00:06:03i really wanted career development
- 00:06:05opportunities um
- 00:06:07where i had the you know the opportunity
- 00:06:09to choose uh from various different
- 00:06:11positions and also a career i feel that
- 00:06:14had great benefits the benefits was
- 00:06:16important to me as well as competitive
- 00:06:18salaries and i found that all within the
- 00:06:21banking industry and more specifically
- 00:06:23with rbc
- 00:06:24um i have held a number of rules in the
- 00:06:27banking
- 00:06:28over the past several years i and i
- 00:06:31still haven't gone through half of the
- 00:06:33positions available within the banking
- 00:06:35industry or rbc for that matter
- 00:06:37especially when i consider it now even
- 00:06:39the pan caribbean rules which you just
- 00:06:41spoke about that we offer at rbc but
- 00:06:44we'll talk a little bit about that later
- 00:06:47but i'll pause now and turn it over to
- 00:06:49jade um who will share how she actually
- 00:06:52came into the field so jade over to you
- 00:06:55okay hi uh so
- 00:06:58similarity similarly to erica i would
- 00:07:00have started off as a teller
- 00:07:03so having completed high school and
- 00:07:04going into college you know i know that
- 00:07:07i needed to start my career journey and
- 00:07:10growing up in cayman we were taught that
- 00:07:12you know the economy is heavily reliant
- 00:07:14on banking and tourism and of the the
- 00:07:16two banking piqued my interests uh
- 00:07:18because i'm highly motivated by
- 00:07:20challenges
- 00:07:21and helping others um and what i did was
- 00:07:24i reached out to individuals in the
- 00:07:26field to gain some insight um you know
- 00:07:28and as well as to express my interests
- 00:07:30um i would also get the weekly papers to
- 00:07:33search for opportunities and of the
- 00:07:35contacts that i made someone actually
- 00:07:38reached out to me and you know they
- 00:07:39advised me that there were opportunities
- 00:07:41at rbc
- 00:07:43and you know i went on to their website
- 00:07:44um did a bit of review and they applied
- 00:07:47for the post that i was interested in
- 00:07:48and it was actually called for an
- 00:07:50interview uh
- 00:07:52which was really exciting um
- 00:07:54and you know having gotten the
- 00:07:56opportunity to work for one of the
- 00:07:57leading canadian banks you know i made
- 00:08:00sure that i prepared for my interview uh
- 00:08:02by making a list of possible questions
- 00:08:04and just going over them um to make sure
- 00:08:07that i felt comfortable and confident
- 00:08:10and you know a very big point as well
- 00:08:13was that i made sure that you know i was
- 00:08:15dressed appropriately um i would ask my
- 00:08:17mother and my friends you know does this
- 00:08:18look good um because you know that's
- 00:08:20what my mother would say you know first
- 00:08:22impressions do last
- 00:08:26and that's so important that you um no
- 00:08:28on that because that first impression
- 00:08:30really
- 00:08:31makes that difference right um there's a
- 00:08:34statistic that says within the first
- 00:08:3690 seconds of an interview the hiring
- 00:08:38manager knows whether or not they're
- 00:08:40going to move forward with you
- 00:08:41right so that that just is telling
- 00:08:44enough to say that you know obviously
- 00:08:46dress for success um and really put
- 00:08:48yourself out there
- 00:08:50i feel
- 00:08:51i definitely resonate with what you said
- 00:08:53about checking the papers you know i'm
- 00:08:55sure a lot of individuals on this call
- 00:08:57right now are currently you know buying
- 00:08:59the compass looking on linkedin trying
- 00:09:01to see what positions are out there a
- 00:09:03lot of times
- 00:09:04it might not be that something is
- 00:09:06advertised but really reaching out to an
- 00:09:08industry professional kind of like their
- 00:09:09shelves and seeing you know are there
- 00:09:11opportunities at rbc is there an
- 00:09:13opportunity for me to come in and gain
- 00:09:15work experience internship experience
- 00:09:16because you never know where that might
- 00:09:18lead
- 00:09:19right
- 00:09:20but absolutely yeah and so
- 00:09:23seeing that you've both have started as
- 00:09:25tellers and seeing where your careers
- 00:09:27have taken you that's just knowing that
- 00:09:30where you start is not where you end up
- 00:09:32um taking really that first step
- 00:09:35into the workforce or into that career
- 00:09:38can
- 00:09:39lead you into
- 00:09:41an industry that you might have not
- 00:09:42necessarily jumped into
- 00:09:45had you not taken that first step
- 00:09:47so
- 00:09:48that's fantastic i love to see careers
- 00:09:50grow and careers
- 00:09:52release like people soar within
- 00:09:54industries that they are passionate
- 00:09:55about um which is why we do connect
- 00:09:58are there any education qualifications
- 00:10:01that you know are required for somebody
- 00:10:03that is interested in the banking
- 00:10:05industry i know there's so many
- 00:10:06different areas erica but um if you
- 00:10:09could kind of
- 00:10:10lay it down and
- 00:10:12claim minimal terms of what what would
- 00:10:14be
- 00:10:15an idea of an educational path for
- 00:10:17someone who's interested in banking
- 00:10:21right you know rbc is most important as
- 00:10:24it it's our people
- 00:10:26and
- 00:10:27at rbc you don't need to be afraid to
- 00:10:29bring
- 00:10:30your the real you to work your true self
- 00:10:32to work uh different backgrounds and
- 00:10:35experiences
- 00:10:36aren't just accepted
- 00:10:38they're celebrated together we really
- 00:10:40support one another and make sure that
- 00:10:42each of us succeed
- 00:10:45we don't just encourage diverse
- 00:10:47perspectives and backgrounds we live it
- 00:10:49by fostering a culture of innovation
- 00:10:52that believes how we do business is just
- 00:10:55as important as the business that we do
- 00:10:57and a diverse workplace is one that
- 00:11:00reflects the makeup of the community
- 00:11:03it's an environment where you can bring
- 00:11:05your true self to work and thrive and at
- 00:11:07rbc we embrace diversity and inclusion
- 00:11:10of innovation and growth and it's really
- 00:11:13a fundamental
- 00:11:14value
- 00:11:15because we know how valuable every
- 00:11:17unique perspective
- 00:11:19actually can be and so just a few
- 00:11:22details uh to help you get started uh
- 00:11:24applicants must have at least a
- 00:11:27secondary school education with the
- 00:11:29qualifications required for that
- 00:11:31particular job now minimum entry level
- 00:11:34requirements include the passes of at
- 00:11:37least five subjects uh the cxc exams
- 00:11:39from grades a b or c and the subjects
- 00:11:42must include math or accounts and
- 00:11:45english
- 00:11:46now in instances where a candidate
- 00:11:49doesn't have previous
- 00:11:51where a candidate may have a previous
- 00:11:53work experience but doesn't meet the
- 00:11:55requisite education qualifications for
- 00:11:57the role exceptions uh we will consider
- 00:12:00those
- 00:12:01um we also know that the transition from
- 00:12:04student uh to professional can be a
- 00:12:07challenge and so
- 00:12:09we have you know looked at ways where we
- 00:12:11can help to get you started we have
- 00:12:13partnered with the university uh college
- 00:12:16of the cayman islands over the last
- 00:12:18several years and have awarded 24
- 00:12:21scholarships to eligible comedians also
- 00:12:24in addition to that uh sponsorships
- 00:12:26we've agreed to hire two of the
- 00:12:28scholarship recipients are providing
- 00:12:30them with the opportunity to gain just
- 00:12:33that full hands-on biking experience and
- 00:12:35we actually had one of those students
- 00:12:38start last week and so i am just
- 00:12:40honestly really excited about this
- 00:12:42program and the endless opportunities
- 00:12:44that will come with it for those
- 00:12:46individuals who come in on the work
- 00:12:47experience here with us
- 00:12:50that's fantastic i love how
- 00:12:53you are connecting with the community
- 00:12:55and offering those entry-level
- 00:12:57opportunities as well on top of
- 00:12:59scholarships obviously scholarships is
- 00:13:02something that's very important for
- 00:13:04students who are looking to become young
- 00:13:05professionals because it helps them on
- 00:13:07the educational side but then also
- 00:13:09offering to individuals the opportunity
- 00:13:11to
- 00:13:12gain
- 00:13:13um full-time employment with rbc is just
- 00:13:15as important so they get that hands-on
- 00:13:17experience
- 00:13:19so you mentioned for entry level
- 00:13:20positions it is the high school diploma
- 00:13:23plus five cxc passes
- 00:13:25which need to include maths in english
- 00:13:28right yes okay those two should be a
- 00:13:30part of the five and also the grades
- 00:13:32should be a brcc
- 00:13:35passing
- 00:13:36a b or c
- 00:13:37so everyone on that call is making no
- 00:13:39note of that
- 00:13:42and
- 00:13:43when it comes to obviously different
- 00:13:45tracks um on the educational
- 00:13:48side that's that's the minimum but when
- 00:13:50as you continue to progress throughout
- 00:13:52your career are there any other
- 00:13:54qualifications that you would suggest
- 00:13:57that individuals look at within
- 00:13:59the industry
- 00:14:01right i i would say that you know we
- 00:14:04as i mentioned we want you to pursue
- 00:14:06that degree we want you to you know the
- 00:14:08higher education of course you mentioned
- 00:14:10compliance that's a huge thing now um
- 00:14:13there's a lot of courses and and things
- 00:14:16that you can take so if you're going to
- 00:14:17come in and you want to look at
- 00:14:19specializing
- 00:14:20we haven't even gotten to that yet um
- 00:14:22you know you want to specialize in
- 00:14:23compliance or marketing or something i
- 00:14:25would say then taking additional courses
- 00:14:28in those fields that will definitely
- 00:14:30help with
- 00:14:31you know
- 00:14:32helping you to move along um once you
- 00:14:34enter the banking field the entry level
- 00:14:36is entry level but if you're coming in
- 00:14:39and you're looking to apply for a role
- 00:14:42that's that's sort of a specialty role
- 00:14:45then of course we would want um
- 00:14:47additional supporting uh
- 00:14:50educational pieces that will go along
- 00:14:51with it
- 00:14:52so basically that's it the high school
- 00:14:55diploma the degrees um
- 00:14:57that definitely will help you get it
- 00:14:59more closer to the front of the line
- 00:15:02exactly and like you mentioned
- 00:15:03compliance um when it comes to
- 00:15:04compliance acams certification is really
- 00:15:06the one to go for marketing there's no
- 00:15:09money for
- 00:15:11yeah there's so many out there i mean
- 00:15:13i'm our marketing person is currently
- 00:15:15doing
- 00:15:16an indesign course online so there's a
- 00:15:19lot of different areas that you could
- 00:15:20specialize in um but yeah starting out
- 00:15:24with um high school diploma getting that
- 00:15:26degree and then seeing what you want to
- 00:15:27move forward with i'm i mean i'm sure
- 00:15:30the team is very supportive it just
- 00:15:31sounds like from your culture and
- 00:15:33meeting um a few members of the rbc team
- 00:15:36as well i know that you are all very
- 00:15:38much of a family oriented supportive
- 00:15:40team that if somebody would want to
- 00:15:41pursue um further education or
- 00:15:44specialization i'm sure that the team
- 00:15:46would support them in that journey as
- 00:15:48well most definitely i mean without even
- 00:15:50going into too much we we have programs
- 00:15:53in place for our employees
- 00:15:55where we do pay help assist with
- 00:15:56education it's an annual um
- 00:15:59stipend that we provide for them and
- 00:16:01there's also a number of
- 00:16:03we have a learning platform where
- 00:16:05persons can go on and do self-learning
- 00:16:06courses um you know it's a lot of
- 00:16:09information within our rbc library where
- 00:16:12persons can actually build their skills
- 00:16:14just by working with us and like i said
- 00:16:16we also provide that support so
- 00:16:18sometimes persons come in they start in
- 00:16:20a role and it's something else that they
- 00:16:21want to do with the support of their
- 00:16:23leader their personal development plans
- 00:16:25we sort of map out and build out how we
- 00:16:27help them get there and it also includes
- 00:16:30assistance educational assistance
- 00:16:33that's wonderful and
- 00:16:36there are various opportunities like we
- 00:16:39mentioned only just a few just now but
- 00:16:40there are various opportunities
- 00:16:43that um one can take within
- 00:16:46the banking industry so would you be
- 00:16:47able to give me kind of a career track
- 00:16:50progression example
- 00:16:52of somebody at rbc
- 00:16:55right i i think it'll be good to use our
- 00:16:57own but i want i would i'm gonna pass
- 00:16:59this one over to jade first because i
- 00:17:01think jay is our progression throughout
- 00:17:03the past several years is really a
- 00:17:06significant one so jay why don't you
- 00:17:07kick us off
- 00:17:09absolutely um
- 00:17:11you know a banking career with rbc can
- 00:17:14provide you with a number of
- 00:17:15opportunities
- 00:17:16um and the ability to progress
- 00:17:19we have our retail
- 00:17:21banking which is otherwise known as
- 00:17:22personal banking uh this is the
- 00:17:24department where we have our tellers
- 00:17:26these are the persons that'll process um
- 00:17:28your your withdrawals your deposits
- 00:17:31your transfers there's a customer
- 00:17:33service representatives and this is
- 00:17:35usually the person that you'll see at
- 00:17:36the front desk
- 00:17:38there's currency service agent
- 00:17:41the loan officers that'll assist with
- 00:17:43any personal loans um educational loans
- 00:17:46and you have the managers um of each of
- 00:17:49these different uh groups here in the
- 00:17:51retail space there's also business in
- 00:17:53corporate banking these persons maintain
- 00:17:56the relationship with businesses and
- 00:17:58business clients they support they have
- 00:18:00support officers um to the business
- 00:18:02banking officer uh they're also
- 00:18:05business banking electronic sales
- 00:18:07specialists um which i find is a really
- 00:18:09interesting role
- 00:18:11um especially because we're in a digital
- 00:18:12age so this person will assist with
- 00:18:14getting person signed up for online
- 00:18:16banking uh whereas you don't need to
- 00:18:18come into the bank to do most of your
- 00:18:20transactions uh they'll assist with
- 00:18:22getting uh e-platforms where you'll go
- 00:18:25online you know onto a business and you
- 00:18:27can pay from there
- 00:18:28conveniently there's also the private
- 00:18:31banking department um
- 00:18:33and this department maintains
- 00:18:34relationships with persons of high net
- 00:18:36worth um with large cash balances there
- 00:18:39are the support officers to the private
- 00:18:41banking officers
- 00:18:43and the private banking officer is the
- 00:18:44primary point of contact for their
- 00:18:46customers they're also the credit
- 00:18:48writers for the private banking officers
- 00:18:51that will assist with any credit needs
- 00:18:53that their clients will have
- 00:18:54and just to give you a live example of
- 00:18:58myself
- 00:18:59my banking career started in 2015.
- 00:19:02i began as a retail banking associate
- 00:19:05otherwise known as a teller and this
- 00:19:07role has transformed a lot you know as
- 00:19:08erica would have said earlier
- 00:19:11for her it was named differently and i'm
- 00:19:12sure some of her duties were a bit
- 00:19:14different as well
- 00:19:15i've had the opportunity to provide
- 00:19:17coverage at the front desk which is um
- 00:19:20noaa client assistant uh in the cash
- 00:19:23service department um where you know
- 00:19:25there
- 00:19:26they deal with the bulk cash and foreign
- 00:19:28currencies such as usd
- 00:19:30gbp euros canadian i've spent some time
- 00:19:33in private banking as well covering the
- 00:19:36private banking associate
- 00:19:39and from being a teller
- 00:19:41and wanting to add more value to the
- 00:19:42business and expand my knowledge i went
- 00:19:45on to being a mortgage support associate
- 00:19:47may of 2019 where i supported the
- 00:19:50mortgage specialist as well as the auto
- 00:19:52finance specialist with their
- 00:19:54administrative duties and this gave me
- 00:19:56the foundation to transition into being
- 00:19:58a lender
- 00:20:00and my lender journey started off with
- 00:20:02as an auto finance specialist march of
- 00:20:042020 where i um assisted clients with
- 00:20:07obtaining their new vehicle and to
- 00:20:09currently being a mortgage specialist um
- 00:20:12as of may 2021
- 00:20:14and you know i really enjoy being a
- 00:20:16mortgage specialist um it makes me feel
- 00:20:18proud
- 00:20:20and you know just being able to help
- 00:20:22persons to to achieve one of their
- 00:20:24biggest financial goals
- 00:20:27so banking is an extremely rewarding
- 00:20:29career and
- 00:20:31my progression through the banking
- 00:20:33field required sacrifices
- 00:20:36ownership of my development meaning you
- 00:20:38know
- 00:20:38ensuring that i had a personal
- 00:20:40development plan uh
- 00:20:42checking that regularly
- 00:20:44as well as coaching and mentorship
- 00:20:50no that that's really great jade and um
- 00:20:53you know just to piggyback off of what
- 00:20:55jade is jade would have given us a good
- 00:20:58overview of the number of rules um you
- 00:21:00know the opportunities uh for
- 00:21:02development
- 00:21:03uh in career advancement within banking
- 00:21:07it's honestly literally endless and i've
- 00:21:10worked um in number of roles over the
- 00:21:12last 29 years some
- 00:21:14were for development reasons uh which
- 00:21:16eventually led to promotions uh
- 00:21:18somewhere for learning and unjust
- 00:21:19discovery um as she had mentioned i've
- 00:21:22had the teller rule uh what we call fsa
- 00:21:25head teller um i also worked as a
- 00:21:27telesupervisor what we now call manager
- 00:21:30of financial solutions
- 00:21:32i was also a branch manager of several
- 00:21:34branches some were small where we had
- 00:21:36about 15 employees some larger with 45 i
- 00:21:39did have a pan-caribbean rule it was
- 00:21:41very interesting i had i had the
- 00:21:42oversight for the security and
- 00:21:44collateral management of the business
- 00:21:46which also included cayman at that time
- 00:21:48and then became a district manager over
- 00:21:51several large branches in the bahamas
- 00:21:53and then
- 00:21:54specialized in an area as an area vice
- 00:21:57president but with a sales force team
- 00:21:59but one of the roles that really helped
- 00:22:02i think prepared me for the role that
- 00:22:03i'm in now was in 2019 i became the
- 00:22:06managing director of the mortgage arm
- 00:22:09of a business in the bahamas we call
- 00:22:11finco uh where i further developed in
- 00:22:13the area of dealing with governments and
- 00:22:15the central bank and regulatory
- 00:22:17oversight those pieces and because the
- 00:22:20company was a public traded company had
- 00:22:22exposure to the agm meetings and
- 00:22:24preparing for those and so just really
- 00:22:27as you can tell just a number of
- 00:22:28positions and yes exposure you know that
- 00:22:31that has been endless uh my advice you
- 00:22:34know at this time if you're looking you
- 00:22:37know for the various opportunities as
- 00:22:38you move along is really justifying your
- 00:22:40passion
- 00:22:41you know what gets you up in the morning
- 00:22:43you can't come in every day and do this
- 00:22:45for for decades and not love it you know
- 00:22:47what puts a smile on your face uh choose
- 00:22:50your path and and hopefully um based on
- 00:22:53what you're passionate about you'll be
- 00:22:55able to work and build in that skill
- 00:22:56that you need to be successful um in a
- 00:22:59role that you would have chosen uh jade
- 00:23:01would have mentioned uh the personal
- 00:23:03development plan that is so important
- 00:23:05setting timelines as to when you want to
- 00:23:07do things
- 00:23:08i also heard a mentor mentors that's
- 00:23:11important the mentors and the sponsors
- 00:23:12really to learn from and to help you get
- 00:23:15there
- 00:23:16what i do want to also mention is the
- 00:23:18number of roles and career opportunities
- 00:23:20within rbc so of course we have j would
- 00:23:23have shared a few but i also want to
- 00:23:24mention the the group risk management
- 00:23:26rules that we call grm um that's the
- 00:23:29group that has oversight for our
- 00:23:31accredited adjudication process we have
- 00:23:33compliance an area there we have finance
- 00:23:35if you want to specialize marketing
- 00:23:38there's also roles strategy and analyst
- 00:23:40roles all of this is within banking and
- 00:23:43then as we mentioned there are those
- 00:23:44opportunities uh that you can actually
- 00:23:47you know work outside your country and
- 00:23:48sometimes without even leaving your home
- 00:23:52you can have a pan-caribbean rule and so
- 00:23:54that's so important so you know at rbc
- 00:23:57we're a proud canadian financial
- 00:23:59institution operating globally and
- 00:24:01hannah you mentioned that that that
- 00:24:03opens doors to so many possibilities and
- 00:24:06it really allows us to deliver to
- 00:24:08deliver leading performance and really
- 00:24:10create values uh value for our clients
- 00:24:13and our communities
- 00:24:16yeah and adding on to that i mean in you
- 00:24:19mentioned so many different positions
- 00:24:21just now with
- 00:24:22marketing there's also hr i mean we all
- 00:24:25have an ip team right awesome even
- 00:24:27forgotten nature hr which are the ones
- 00:24:32help with the hiring and all the
- 00:24:34internal like employee relations so
- 00:24:37there is so much when it comes to a
- 00:24:40company and a business um you know you
- 00:24:42might be thinking banking but there's so
- 00:24:44many different departments underneath
- 00:24:45that you can find a position in and if
- 00:24:48you know you are in a current role that
- 00:24:50you know might not spark you spark your
- 00:24:53joy or right marie condo
- 00:24:55spark joy to you then you could also
- 00:24:57move into another department and then
- 00:24:59you know kind of how jade found your
- 00:25:01stride within being a mortgage
- 00:25:03specialist and really being that person
- 00:25:05that when you know a young commandant
- 00:25:07buys their first home or buys their
- 00:25:09first peace land like you know that is
- 00:25:11so special right being a part of that
- 00:25:14journey for somebody so
- 00:25:16it you're right finding your passion
- 00:25:17really finding the path that leads to
- 00:25:19you
- 00:25:20making that professional development or
- 00:25:22that career action plan you know
- 00:25:24sticking to those smart goals of you
- 00:25:26know this is what i'm going to be
- 00:25:28working on between the next three to six
- 00:25:30months and then this is the next
- 00:25:31qualification i want to go towards
- 00:25:33making a plan for yourself so that you
- 00:25:34can continue to grow as a professional
- 00:25:37really is so important and so now
- 00:25:40specific to cayman you know we've
- 00:25:42covered quite a bit of the roles within
- 00:25:43rbc
- 00:25:45um and the banking industry as a whole
- 00:25:47specific to came out what does the
- 00:25:48market look like
- 00:25:50for somebody interested
- 00:25:52in banking
- 00:25:54so i i want to start um you know the
- 00:25:57opportunities that are
- 00:25:59you know there there's so much at rbc
- 00:26:01and um
- 00:26:02while i want to i'll get to looking
- 00:26:05directly at cayman but i also want to
- 00:26:07speak because we are global global
- 00:26:09global bank
- 00:26:10and
- 00:26:11an institution where we
- 00:26:14look at delivering leading performance
- 00:26:15and our successes comes from the 89 000
- 00:26:19plus employees who leverage their
- 00:26:21imaginations and their insight to really
- 00:26:23bring our vision our values uh to life
- 00:26:26um as canada's biggest bank and one of
- 00:26:29the largest in the world based on market
- 00:26:32capitalization we have a diversified
- 00:26:34business model uh with a focus on
- 00:26:36innovation and really just providing
- 00:26:38that exceptional uh experiences to
- 00:26:42our 17 million clients in canada uh the
- 00:26:45us and 27 other countries so there's
- 00:26:47there's opportunity here and it came out
- 00:26:49but then there's opportunity once you
- 00:26:50get into rbc um uh that that go beyond
- 00:26:54uh just
- 00:26:55our country and as for cayman we rbc has
- 00:26:59had a deep and meaningful presence here
- 00:27:02since 1964 and and this year marks 58
- 00:27:06years of rbc's commitment and dedication
- 00:27:10to the cayman island community our
- 00:27:12commitments are to the people of the
- 00:27:14cayman island is a key priority for us
- 00:27:16and one we bring to life through the
- 00:27:18numerous and ongoing community service
- 00:27:21endeavors including the meaningful
- 00:27:23impactful programs for you like the ucci
- 00:27:26scholarships and you know how we do
- 00:27:29business is as important as what we do
- 00:27:31and our successes is definitely defined
- 00:27:34by the long-term well-being of the
- 00:27:36people that we serve and in the places
- 00:27:37in which we operate and so rbc has an
- 00:27:41industrious and enduring commitment to
- 00:27:43the successes of caymanians and the
- 00:27:46overall prosperity of a caribbean people
- 00:27:48and you know one of the things is that
- 00:27:51we are
- 00:27:52we are constantly uh looking uh for for
- 00:27:56persons to fill positions and rules uh
- 00:27:58right from here right from within uh
- 00:28:01our
- 00:28:02community which we serve
- 00:28:04um we actually will be putting an ad in
- 00:28:07the paper i think just this friday with
- 00:28:09a few jobs that we have open but it's
- 00:28:11always our very first preference to hire
- 00:28:14caymanian first that's important to us
- 00:28:16and so at rbc you know our purpose is
- 00:28:18what we live and act on every day and
- 00:28:20it's really helping clients thrive and
- 00:28:22our communities to prosper
- 00:28:28and i do know that um rbc is very much
- 00:28:31of
- 00:28:32like i mentioned earlier a community
- 00:28:35community centric right so i see rbc out
- 00:28:38doing the 5k walks i see you doing all
- 00:28:41of the different
- 00:28:42um community involvement and being a
- 00:28:45part of lots of not-for-profits i mean
- 00:28:46you partner with connect by nova thank
- 00:28:48you so much um so that we're able to do
- 00:28:51things like this for the community um
- 00:28:54and go out and do work readiness so rbc
- 00:28:56really i mean you've
- 00:28:58been in operations for 58 years it's
- 00:29:01what you said and you can really tell
- 00:29:03how important
- 00:29:04of a company it is within the community
- 00:29:08um and has built so many careers for
- 00:29:10communion so thank you so much for being
- 00:29:13um
- 00:29:14a part of
- 00:29:15growing our cayman community and really
- 00:29:18helping young humanians get their career
- 00:29:19started and building their careers so
- 00:29:23i want to hear your recommendations
- 00:29:25for
- 00:29:26um someone interested in banking
- 00:29:29so
- 00:29:30i don't know who wants to start off but
- 00:29:32i think that i love hearing jades
- 00:29:35because it's so it's so refreshing right
- 00:29:37i mean i've been doing this for 30 years
- 00:29:39i'll be happy to piggyback off of it but
- 00:29:41jade why don't you kick us off
- 00:29:46sure absolutely
- 00:29:48um a banking per uh career can you know
- 00:29:52can be very rewarding um and my
- 00:29:55recommendations to anyone that's
- 00:29:56interested in the fields are to you know
- 00:29:59first start by deciding you know what
- 00:30:01sector are you interested in
- 00:30:03uh or what role you think that you may
- 00:30:05be interested in and then going on to
- 00:30:07doing your research you can ask persons
- 00:30:10that are currently in the field or you
- 00:30:12can do some internet um search as well
- 00:30:15surround yourself with persons that are
- 00:30:17able to support your growth and that our
- 00:30:20understanding of your personal goals um
- 00:30:22and that it will require some sacrifices
- 00:30:25uh you know whether it is professionally
- 00:30:27or personally um and having a mentor
- 00:30:31whether it's informal or formal then
- 00:30:33maybe someone that you admire their
- 00:30:34worth ethic and you know how they've
- 00:30:36progressed
- 00:30:37you can ask them to mentor you or you
- 00:30:39can you can just uh
- 00:30:41watch and be vigilant and see some of
- 00:30:43the things that they do and incorporate
- 00:30:44it into your own routines
- 00:30:47and important
- 00:30:49very important is to to create a
- 00:30:50personal development plan
- 00:30:53this will
- 00:30:54help you to
- 00:30:56succeed presently and in the future it
- 00:30:58should include something that will help
- 00:31:00you to continue to grow
- 00:31:02and keeping track of your progress and
- 00:31:04revisiting your personal development
- 00:31:05plan regularly whether it's monthly
- 00:31:08quarterly depending on what that goal
- 00:31:10looks like and you know when you're
- 00:31:11trying to achieve it by
- 00:31:13um
- 00:31:14again you know being open to feedback
- 00:31:16and constructive criticism feedback is a
- 00:31:18gift and it's sometimes you should ask
- 00:31:21for it and if something is said to you
- 00:31:23and you you may not necessarily like
- 00:31:25what was said you know really sitting uh
- 00:31:27and thinking about it and saying you
- 00:31:29know what can i learn from this or you
- 00:31:31know where where could where could i
- 00:31:33have possibly went wrong or how can i
- 00:31:35grow from this um and
- 00:31:37you know seeking out opportunities and
- 00:31:39not waiting for them and this is
- 00:31:41something that i've done as well um
- 00:31:43speaking to my manager about cross
- 00:31:45training or even using my own personal
- 00:31:47time
- 00:31:48to go to someone else and say hey you
- 00:31:50know can you teach me a few things um so
- 00:31:52it's really about owning your career
- 00:31:54journey and your development
- 00:31:58yeah that's well said jade i don't even
- 00:32:01know how to
- 00:32:02to come behind that i i think i love
- 00:32:05what you'd have said it's about owning
- 00:32:07owning your career journey and and that
- 00:32:09is so important you know um
- 00:32:12i would just say you know also i
- 00:32:14determine what you're passionate about
- 00:32:16you know what do you have an aptitude
- 00:32:18for what are you good at if you like
- 00:32:20working with people then maybe a
- 00:32:21client-facing role may be best for you
- 00:32:24so that's your teller your lenders our
- 00:32:26sales and service professional roles
- 00:32:29maybe you prefer working independently
- 00:32:31with minimal customer contact then a
- 00:32:33functional operation rule may be a
- 00:32:35better option
- 00:32:37maybe you like to create a perhaps you
- 00:32:39know you're a budding communicator or a
- 00:32:41marketer that could be important
- 00:32:44maybe you enjoy solving problems or
- 00:32:46maybe your ingenuity can help us solve
- 00:32:49client issues and and help create you
- 00:32:51know those better client experiences for
- 00:32:53us
- 00:32:54i would say just decide as you come in
- 00:32:56you know maybe is you want to specialize
- 00:32:58in a role you mentioned the finance rule
- 00:33:00the marketing rules we have insurances
- 00:33:03or maybe it's just general banking so i
- 00:33:05think thinking about it in that way you
- 00:33:07know will help you to narrow your focus
- 00:33:10i think another thing is important are
- 00:33:11your skills are you know attention to
- 00:33:13detail that's important listening skills
- 00:33:16oral and written communications those
- 00:33:18are important you know our roles at rbc
- 00:33:20aren't just about traditional banking
- 00:33:22they're also about just being creative
- 00:33:25we promote that imaginative and we we
- 00:33:28encourage our employees to be bold and
- 00:33:30speak up and share their ideas that can
- 00:33:32create an impact you know around the
- 00:33:34world and i would say i heard you'd
- 00:33:37mention it around the mentoring you know
- 00:33:38connect with individuals who have
- 00:33:40established in the banking industry talk
- 00:33:42to them you know ask them about what
- 00:33:44they enjoy about what they're doing and
- 00:33:46what they find challenging maybe in
- 00:33:48their current roles and um you know just
- 00:33:50establishing that mentor relationship
- 00:33:52you know and set goals with your mentor
- 00:33:55based on what you want to accomplish
- 00:33:58and then maybe just finally you know you
- 00:34:00have choices of what buying setting you
- 00:34:02may want to work in some person start
- 00:34:04out at retail banking and they move to
- 00:34:06wealth management or investment or they
- 00:34:08move more to commercial or it may just
- 00:34:10be a credit union so you know you have
- 00:34:12preference you
- 00:34:13choose the one that best suits your
- 00:34:15preference and and i think definitely um
- 00:34:18those are some good starting points uh
- 00:34:21that that you can take and hopefully
- 00:34:22move forward with
- 00:34:25those are so many great points i don't
- 00:34:27even know where to start
- 00:34:29um it was own your career make a
- 00:34:31professional development plan
- 00:34:33mentoring everything that was just
- 00:34:37discussed is exactly what i
- 00:34:39preach every single day
- 00:34:41amazing one other thing you know with
- 00:34:43the development plan as you go along
- 00:34:45um sometimes what i what i say to
- 00:34:48employees and i even to myself
- 00:34:51which are personal because i have one i
- 00:34:52have a personal development plan even
- 00:34:54though you know there's been years of
- 00:34:56doing this because there's always
- 00:34:57something else to do you can bill you
- 00:34:59should always have a development plan
- 00:35:00that covers what you're doing in your
- 00:35:02current role okay because there's still
- 00:35:04skills that you want to build and
- 00:35:06sharpen and tweak as you go along and
- 00:35:07then of course it should be one that
- 00:35:09that's the future that you're building
- 00:35:11out to the north star so they're both
- 00:35:13working together at the same time
- 00:35:15simultaneously as you work on the
- 00:35:17current stuff you're also building out
- 00:35:18to the future so that's just another
- 00:35:20little tip that i always say to my
- 00:35:22employees and even to myself as i go
- 00:35:24along because i think jade said it you
- 00:35:26should always be preparing for the next
- 00:35:28role as you go along even while you're a
- 00:35:30student and in school you should be
- 00:35:32getting ready for that
- 00:35:34and that's something as well that goes
- 00:35:35along with like even keeping your resume
- 00:35:37up to date in your current role
- 00:35:40because a lot of times when we're
- 00:35:41currently in our role and we love what
- 00:35:43we do and you know we're not thinking of
- 00:35:45that next step because we're enjoying
- 00:35:46the now
- 00:35:48yes there might there might also be an
- 00:35:50opportunity to grow
- 00:35:51within the company that you need to
- 00:35:53apply for right or you need to do an
- 00:35:55internal
- 00:35:56application or even externally if you
- 00:35:58find another bank that's fantastic and
- 00:36:00you see an opportunity you can't lose
- 00:36:01out on right so even making sure that
- 00:36:03you write down everything that you do
- 00:36:05day to day because a lot of times yes
- 00:36:06there's a job description but there are
- 00:36:08a lot of other projects that we're
- 00:36:09interested in getting our hands on or
- 00:36:11you know learning experience kind of
- 00:36:12what jade mentioned going to your
- 00:36:14manager and saying what else can i help
- 00:36:15with
- 00:36:16taking that self initiative right
- 00:36:18learning those different skills like the
- 00:36:20different skill set um erica you
- 00:36:22mentioned a couple of
- 00:36:24soft skills you know attention to detail
- 00:36:26listening skills um someone who's
- 00:36:29self-motivated right all those are so
- 00:36:30important um in the long run as well
- 00:36:34just as important as those technical
- 00:36:35skills in getting that degree
- 00:36:37if you're a people person if you're a
- 00:36:39communicator thinking about those
- 00:36:41different
- 00:36:42um things of where you would fit best
- 00:36:44and where you would really thrive in
- 00:36:47that role
- 00:36:49so there's a there's a lot in there that
- 00:36:51i think
- 00:36:53individuals or participants on this call
- 00:36:55can really take
- 00:36:56take away from
- 00:36:58the session and saying oh you know i
- 00:36:59think i'm going to put together a
- 00:37:00personal development plan
- 00:37:03so just quickly touching a bit more on
- 00:37:05that for someone who doesn't know what a
- 00:37:07personal development plan would you be
- 00:37:08able to dive in a little deeper on how
- 00:37:10to get started with that or
- 00:37:13what can they do what are the questions
- 00:37:14to ask yourself
- 00:37:16right so you would want to start out
- 00:37:19like i said maybe about the current role
- 00:37:21i i think it's always good to look at it
- 00:37:23you know if you're starting off as a
- 00:37:25student i think the audience uh
- 00:37:28basically a
- 00:37:29university who may be on the call um you
- 00:37:32want to start thinking about what's next
- 00:37:34you know what do i need to build on
- 00:37:36what i've found um with with interviews
- 00:37:40sometimes it's getting in the door right
- 00:37:42so the person may be really smart but
- 00:37:45they struggle
- 00:37:46with trying to
- 00:37:48communicate that that'll get that across
- 00:37:50to the the person who's interviewing
- 00:37:52them and so maybe you need to work on on
- 00:37:55building your communication skill and
- 00:37:57and you know so i say test yourself i
- 00:37:59can tell you um you know when i moved
- 00:38:02from being a teller and started to
- 00:38:04progress to the bank i had to go on i
- 00:38:06didn't i don't think i could remember in
- 00:38:08youtube but there's so many different
- 00:38:10uh you know tips that you could just go
- 00:38:12on youtube and watch and observe um even
- 00:38:15if you google
- 00:38:16the type of questions a lot of the
- 00:38:18questions now that um persons ask some
- 00:38:20more behavioral questions the what-if
- 00:38:22questions what if this happened or what
- 00:38:24if you're faced with this type of
- 00:38:25challenge how would you react and so
- 00:38:27it's not necessary to test your
- 00:38:28knowledge we've already have your cv we
- 00:38:30can see that you're more than qualified
- 00:38:32we want to get to know you the person
- 00:38:34your background and so i think fine
- 00:38:36that's that could become part of your
- 00:38:38some person's development personal
- 00:38:40development maybe they want to build
- 00:38:41their communication skills so they want
- 00:38:43to maybe look at a couple of videos test
- 00:38:46themselves maybe even sit with their
- 00:38:48lecture and have them test them or i
- 00:38:50don't know if that's even something
- 00:38:51within the university program that they
- 00:38:53allow so that's one part of it and then
- 00:38:55of course like you said um if you know
- 00:38:57that you want to specialize let's just
- 00:38:59say they wanted to go into compliance
- 00:39:01then you know that separate and apart
- 00:39:03from a degree you want to be applying or
- 00:39:05taking a course so that as you go in
- 00:39:08maybe you don't want to do an entry
- 00:39:09level you want to sort of come in as a
- 00:39:11junior person to incomply compliance so
- 00:39:13you want to sort of send in that okay i
- 00:39:16have the qualifications for entry level
- 00:39:18but i also have done an additional
- 00:39:20course to support the role that i really
- 00:39:22want to end up in at the end of the day
- 00:39:24so it's building out as you go along but
- 00:39:27like i said more focusing if you're
- 00:39:28working or you're already employed is
- 00:39:30looking at the skill where you're at and
- 00:39:32how you can build on that and then
- 00:39:33trying to figure out what else can i put
- 00:39:35in place so it's asking yourself those
- 00:39:37kind of questions what do i need to
- 00:39:39develop on to make me the best person
- 00:39:42for the role because i can tell you you
- 00:39:44know when we post positions sometimes we
- 00:39:46get up to 10 15 applicants so what's
- 00:39:49going to cost your cv first of all to
- 00:39:52stand out like you said very you need to
- 00:39:54have an updated one
- 00:39:55and i like to do the you know with covet
- 00:39:58it hasn't allowed us to do a lot of face
- 00:39:59to face but we've done virtual and i
- 00:40:01think jay has said it you know how do
- 00:40:03you present yourself um how are you
- 00:40:05going to communicate and don't be afraid
- 00:40:08to speak up about the talents and
- 00:40:11everything that you possess
- 00:40:13okay i think sometimes and i don't want
- 00:40:15to get into the female male thing
- 00:40:17because but sometimes we tend to play
- 00:40:18down
- 00:40:20our talents or our skills and sometimes
- 00:40:22when you go into you know it's not about
- 00:40:24being um you know so assertive but i
- 00:40:27think you just need to be able to say to
- 00:40:29the ensure that uh that
- 00:40:32you get you get across
- 00:40:34a little bit more than what's on the cv
- 00:40:36like i said we have the cv that
- 00:40:38interview is to get to know you the
- 00:40:40person and being well prepared for that
- 00:40:42is really going to be important and
- 00:40:44sometimes what
- 00:40:45actually um allows you to stand out from
- 00:40:48the other candidates who would have
- 00:40:50applied that's and that's so important
- 00:40:53you say that because you're right the cv
- 00:40:55is that piece of paper
- 00:40:56right and you it's really just kind of
- 00:40:58an outline of your skills your
- 00:40:59experience your education
- 00:41:01but really when you get to know the
- 00:41:03person is that interview setting or in
- 00:41:05that cover letter right um so really
- 00:41:08putting a bit of your personality being
- 00:41:10prepared
- 00:41:12i like to tell people when they're
- 00:41:13getting ready for their interview to put
- 00:41:15together a brag sheet not something that
- 00:41:17you'll actually hand the interviewer but
- 00:41:19something that you're proud of your
- 00:41:20accomplishments you know because you've
- 00:41:22done all these things throughout your
- 00:41:23life and throughout your career that you
- 00:41:24should be able to share
- 00:41:26right um and be proud of them and that's
- 00:41:29really where that interview comes in
- 00:41:30right to talk about yourself and why you
- 00:41:33would be the best candidate for the role
- 00:41:35and like you said in that personal
- 00:41:37development plan
- 00:41:38making sure that if you win are in that
- 00:41:40current position making sure that you're
- 00:41:43efficient as possible if there's
- 00:41:45maybe
- 00:41:47systems in place how can you make them
- 00:41:49more efficient right how can you find
- 00:41:52you know something that is not working
- 00:41:54as great as it could be and then seeing
- 00:41:56what can we do differently right we're
- 00:41:58in the 21st century we're in like a
- 00:42:00digital age everything is changing
- 00:42:02left and right um there's a lot of new
- 00:42:04technologies that were in place i mean
- 00:42:06everyone virtual interviews is one
- 00:42:09we're now all using teams and zoom and
- 00:42:11so um just post covid there's a lot that
- 00:42:14has changed another soft skill that
- 00:42:16everyone's looking for some adaptability
- 00:42:18and flexibility you know really people
- 00:42:20who can roll with the punches come in
- 00:42:23and you know be able to
- 00:42:25adapt to change right because yeah i
- 00:42:27mean we don't know what's going to
- 00:42:28happen tomorrow right no one anticipated
- 00:42:31coven
- 00:42:32so
- 00:42:33you're
- 00:42:34so
- 00:42:34right about that you know the soft
- 00:42:36skills
- 00:42:37i always say the persons you know a lot
- 00:42:39during covet we we started to talk a lot
- 00:42:43about eq
- 00:42:45you know iq was important but eq is also
- 00:42:48important as well being self-aware and
- 00:42:50and understanding how do you interact
- 00:42:52and how do you engage and all those
- 00:42:54different pieces and so i'm definitely
- 00:42:57um you're going down the right path with
- 00:42:58that
- 00:42:59you know as we
- 00:43:01look to higher you know even within asia
- 00:43:03we're looking differently we're looking
- 00:43:05differently at at the persons and rbc as
- 00:43:08you mentioned before we're a family
- 00:43:10we're we're it's about togetherness it's
- 00:43:12about
- 00:43:13uh bringing you know being diverse and
- 00:43:15inclusive as we move along and just
- 00:43:17persons being able to come to work and
- 00:43:19feel very comfortable about what they do
- 00:43:21we encourage a speak of culture
- 00:43:24i'm sure jay can share that with you
- 00:43:26that we want to hear your ideas there's
- 00:43:29no idea that's far-fetched we want you
- 00:43:31to think about those bold and different
- 00:43:33ways of just because we've been doing it
- 00:43:35like this for years doesn't mean that we
- 00:43:36can't do it better or differently so so
- 00:43:39that's the type of environment that that
- 00:43:42like i said for me that has kept me here
- 00:43:45and and and you know i just enjoy it and
- 00:43:47it's just been a pleasure to sit here
- 00:43:49this afternoon and really share this
- 00:43:51with the persons on the line that
- 00:43:54banking is is a little bit more you know
- 00:43:56we're not just a group of bored
- 00:43:57individuals we come in here to check
- 00:43:59paper it's it's it's a it's it's a it's
- 00:44:02more than just a career you you
- 00:44:05it's about
- 00:44:06family and being comfortable and
- 00:44:08passionate and happy and like i said you
- 00:44:10wake up every morning you have to find
- 00:44:11something that you enjoy
- 00:44:13doing
- 00:44:14that's so important anna so important
- 00:44:18eric i wanted to touch on the point of
- 00:44:20the development plan and give a live
- 00:44:22example
- 00:44:23uh so for myself you know i quickly
- 00:44:25recognized that
- 00:44:27public speaking was an area that you
- 00:44:28know i needed to develop on on that was
- 00:44:31one of the first things that i included
- 00:44:33on my development plan um something as
- 00:44:36simple as being on this this call here
- 00:44:38with with all of you today would have
- 00:44:40scared me um when i started out and you
- 00:44:42know what i did was i identified that
- 00:44:44that was a challenge for me
- 00:44:46and i uh i would have challenged myself
- 00:44:49to put myself in the position where i
- 00:44:51would have to speak to persons more
- 00:44:52often and that helped me to develop and
- 00:44:55i would also host meetings um in my
- 00:44:58sales role
- 00:44:59and then i would ask for feedback after
- 00:45:01each meeting from my monitor to say you
- 00:45:03know hey how did i do um on the meeting
- 00:45:05were there any areas of opportunities um
- 00:45:08you know what went well things like that
- 00:45:10um
- 00:45:11that that was a live example for myself
- 00:45:13and it's something that i'm really proud
- 00:45:15of
- 00:45:18that is that is awesome and thank you so
- 00:45:20much for speaking up and sharing that
- 00:45:22because
- 00:45:23those are the things hannah that that
- 00:45:25you look for it's it's not just about
- 00:45:27the courses and other things it's about
- 00:45:29what do you want to develop and to make
- 00:45:31you better
- 00:45:32at what you're doing or prepare you like
- 00:45:35i said for the future role and jade knew
- 00:45:37um very early on as as a
- 00:45:40mortgage support associate supporting
- 00:45:41the specialist that she once she one day
- 00:45:44wanted to sit in that role and the role
- 00:45:46that she sits in now
- 00:45:48she has to speak a lot she has to go and
- 00:45:50give presentations and you know all of
- 00:45:53that stuff so imagine someone
- 00:45:55who
- 00:45:56who was basically terrified of doing
- 00:45:58that but that's the role you want to go
- 00:45:59in so how are you going to prepare
- 00:46:00yourself for that position and and jade
- 00:46:03i i think that's a great example and
- 00:46:06thank you so much for sharing it
- 00:46:08yeah identifying those areas of
- 00:46:10improvement and really recognizing that
- 00:46:14no this is my end goal and these are the
- 00:46:17different skills that it takes that i
- 00:46:18need to
- 00:46:20work on myself
- 00:46:22um and to get to that end position
- 00:46:24whether that is you know a role or
- 00:46:26whether that's um for their education or
- 00:46:28whatever that might be right and public
- 00:46:30speaking i can tell you it's not for
- 00:46:31everyone
- 00:46:32right there's a lot of individuals who
- 00:46:35much rather be in back office roles you
- 00:46:37know
- 00:46:38but doing all the admin
- 00:46:40and
- 00:46:41and that is fine right like public
- 00:46:43speaking is not for everyone um and jade
- 00:46:47i mean kudos to you for actually working
- 00:46:49on that because you knew you wanted to
- 00:46:51become a mortgage specialist right and
- 00:46:53that's a huge hurdle that not many
- 00:46:55people are willing to overcome um so
- 00:46:58really um kudos to you on that
- 00:47:01i been have been in hr an example i've
- 00:47:04been in hr started out as an intern then
- 00:47:07worked was an apprentice and then
- 00:47:10consultant now to running to connect
- 00:47:12right i didn't i mean just in
- 00:47:14recruitment we do speak to a lot of
- 00:47:15people it is naturally in hr especially
- 00:47:18we're just people-centric we just left
- 00:47:20people talking to people whether it is
- 00:47:22about their day whether it's about what
- 00:47:23role they want to go into right so
- 00:47:26naturally public speaking had to be one
- 00:47:27of those skills that i had to work on
- 00:47:31um right so now doing all of these
- 00:47:34trainings you know the more
- 00:47:36you put yourself out there the better
- 00:47:37you're gonna um get at those skills
- 00:47:40right so putting in those meetings in
- 00:47:42your calendar you know maybe sitting in
- 00:47:44on a meeting with you know your manager
- 00:47:46you know whatever that skill might be
- 00:47:48find ways in your day-to-day that you
- 00:47:50can improve
- 00:47:52right and slowly maturely i mean it
- 00:47:54doesn't happen overnight but slowly you
- 00:47:56will get better at those and then that
- 00:47:58could be something that you could add
- 00:47:59towards you know
- 00:48:00eq and like talk about in your interview
- 00:48:02setting um so before we close out i know
- 00:48:05we're coming almost to the end um
- 00:48:08i'm gonna please
- 00:48:10yeah i know right i could sit and talk
- 00:48:11to you both all day here
- 00:48:13but i'm gonna open up the floor to
- 00:48:15anyone who has questions um so feel free
- 00:48:17to ask them in the chat box in the q a
- 00:48:20we would love to hear from you even if
- 00:48:22it's you know personalized question
- 00:48:23about you and your career and what you
- 00:48:25want to ask um eric and jade would be
- 00:48:28happy to answer i know they're so
- 00:48:30passionate about the banking industry i
- 00:48:32can't even believe 40 minutes has passed
- 00:48:34already um but i'm going to ask a
- 00:48:36question so
- 00:48:38how can someone get
- 00:48:40involved in learning more
- 00:48:43where can they
- 00:48:45so um
- 00:48:46i would say you can definitely uh check
- 00:48:48on our website um which is jobs.rbc.com
- 00:48:53forward slash this is really a great way
- 00:48:55to learn about what jobs are currently
- 00:48:58available uh you can select a cayman in
- 00:49:00the country category and actually go
- 00:49:02from there and i i would say uh consider
- 00:49:06interning right that's just simply
- 00:49:08enough um an internship will definitely
- 00:49:10i'll give you the opportunity uh to
- 00:49:12experience really firsthand
- 00:49:14um what it would be like working in the
- 00:49:16banking industry and really allow you to
- 00:49:18choose uh what banking career you
- 00:49:21possibly want to pursue even if it's
- 00:49:23only for a few months uh you will be
- 00:49:26able to get that exposure and really
- 00:49:28make some good connections which i feel
- 00:49:30will support uh you when you're ready to
- 00:49:32make that final decision on the career
- 00:49:35path that you want to move forward with
- 00:49:36and as my career and jade squares
- 00:49:39definitely demonstrated you can have
- 00:49:41many roles very early on
- 00:49:43on your biking career as you decide to
- 00:49:45move forward but the check out website
- 00:49:48like i said there's a number of rules
- 00:49:49available and remember we're a global
- 00:49:51company it's not just going to be came
- 00:49:53out it will be across the caribbean
- 00:49:55we're located in canada the us and 27
- 00:49:57other countries so check out our website
- 00:50:00and then of course the internship i
- 00:50:01think that definitely puts you very up
- 00:50:04close and personal to it and you can say
- 00:50:06you know what this is for me well maybe
- 00:50:08it's not for me and then you go from
- 00:50:10there
- 00:50:12just a question here um for the
- 00:50:14internships when is
- 00:50:16when do your internships open
- 00:50:19or when is it so right now we are only
- 00:50:22interning with the ucci based on the the
- 00:50:25scholarship programs that we are
- 00:50:28providing so like i said earlier we
- 00:50:30provide uh two spots right now we have
- 00:50:33one filled and so we're definitely
- 00:50:35looking forward to filling that other
- 00:50:37one so i don't know if any students are
- 00:50:39on the the call um so but you know it
- 00:50:42doesn't just have to be within within
- 00:50:44our our business i'm sure there are
- 00:50:46other companies out there that have
- 00:50:47internships but
- 00:50:49we
- 00:50:49right now we're carrying two openings
- 00:50:52and one of those have already been
- 00:50:53filled
- 00:50:55yeah i can also touch on that question
- 00:50:56as well um so companies usually open up
- 00:51:00their internship applications
- 00:51:02beginning of the year sometimes they
- 00:51:03start in january and then deadlines are
- 00:51:05between april
- 00:51:06um march and april
- 00:51:09and then internships actually go
- 00:51:10throughout the summer mostly because a
- 00:51:12lot of students are in school during the
- 00:51:14year and then the summer months they're
- 00:51:15out of school so you know might as well
- 00:51:17gain some valuable experience when
- 00:51:19you're off school
- 00:51:21and internships are the perfect way to
- 00:51:23figure out whether that industry or that
- 00:51:25position is really for you right because
- 00:51:27you could one day do an internship
- 00:51:30you know within
- 00:51:32the marketing team and then another time
- 00:51:34do it within the accounts team right so
- 00:51:35really internships are that perfect
- 00:51:38place to kind of dip your toes into
- 00:51:40different areas see if it's the right
- 00:51:42area for you
- 00:51:44if it is fantastic go from there if it
- 00:51:46isn't you know you could always do an
- 00:51:48internship in another area that you
- 00:51:49might be able to find
- 00:51:51um your light in so
- 00:51:53definitely keep an eye out for all the
- 00:51:55students that are on here for
- 00:51:56internships during the beginning of the
- 00:51:57year there are actually some still
- 00:52:00looking um
- 00:52:01for interns now
- 00:52:05just to put in there are the individuals
- 00:52:08who come into us we
- 00:52:09we understand that they're students in
- 00:52:11school and so we work around a schedule
- 00:52:13like the individual we just bought on
- 00:52:15boarded uh they're only working three
- 00:52:17days out of the week from nine to one
- 00:52:19because of their class schedules so they
- 00:52:21have some more classes in the afternoon
- 00:52:23and so you know we're very very much so
- 00:52:26flexible and open to working along with
- 00:52:28our students we do understand of course
- 00:52:30they're doing this while they're
- 00:52:31attending university
- 00:52:34and that's so important that a company
- 00:52:37is flexible with a student's course
- 00:52:39schedule right because a lot of times
- 00:52:40students might think oh no i can't apply
- 00:52:42to that because it's the regular nine to
- 00:52:44five but really put yourself out there
- 00:52:46go get make that application because you
- 00:52:49never know
- 00:52:50nowadays i can tell you many companies
- 00:52:52are much more flexible than you think we
- 00:52:54have definitely a lot of companies turn
- 00:52:56to page
- 00:52:58postcovid because we all had to go into
- 00:53:00lockdown um yeah about that again but
- 00:53:04we've all returned to page and there's a
- 00:53:05lot more flexibility um and a lot more
- 00:53:09of an understanding in terms of culture
- 00:53:11and really helping you know individuals
- 00:53:13whether
- 00:53:15in their personal life or in their um
- 00:53:17professional life as well so really put
- 00:53:19yourself out there kind of take that
- 00:53:21step
- 00:53:22um i mean
- 00:53:23the three of us are really examples of
- 00:53:25you know kind of just going going for it
- 00:53:28um and really building a career from you
- 00:53:31know that very first position thank you
- 00:53:33so much i'm gonna just double check here
- 00:53:35that we don't have any other questions
- 00:53:38um but if there are questions after this
- 00:53:40session please feel free to email me i'd
- 00:53:42be happy to reach out to eric and jade
- 00:53:44and get kind of get their feedback on it
- 00:53:47but thank you so much both of you for
- 00:53:49spending a bit of your afternoon with us
- 00:53:50we're so grateful that you were able to
- 00:53:52share some of your knowledge and your
- 00:53:53expertise on the industry i'm sure we're
- 00:53:56definitely going to
- 00:53:58keep get you guys back to chat more
- 00:54:01but for anyone who's interested in
- 00:54:04more sessions like these or learning

- 00:54:19our email address there
- 00:54:20connect.nova.ky or feel free to give us
- 00:54:22a call at six two three one zero four
- 00:54:25one but are there any other closing
- 00:54:27remarks
- 00:54:28that you'd like to write
- 00:54:30i'll let jade start jade anything that
- 00:54:32you wanna share before we end
- 00:54:35no um well you know i just want to thank
- 00:54:37everyone for joining um you know and
- 00:54:40taking the time out to learn more about
- 00:54:42the banking industry and and getting
- 00:54:43some information because that really is
- 00:54:46a part of making that initial step you
- 00:54:48know listening in from the persons that
- 00:54:49are in the field and saying this is
- 00:54:51something that i you know would possibly
- 00:54:53be interested in uh so so that is a good
- 00:54:55step there um and i'm sure eric and i
- 00:54:58would be happy you know to answer any
- 00:55:00any questions that either of you would
- 00:55:01have um in terms of banking and that's
- 00:55:03more specific to you uh you know we are
- 00:55:06very much um
- 00:55:08you know uh excited and and and keen on
- 00:55:11um developing young hey money and um
- 00:55:13especially in the banking industry
- 00:55:15um along their their journey
- 00:55:18definitely and and i'll
- 00:55:20just be very briefly thank you so much
- 00:55:23for that jaden as you said um just thank
- 00:55:26you all for calling in today and and
- 00:55:28joining us and but just remember you
- 00:55:30know choose maybe what you're passionate
- 00:55:31about you know choose that path that
- 00:55:34that where you really want to um you
- 00:55:36know end up at the end of the day and i
- 00:55:39j you said something and i think i'm
- 00:55:40going to take that with me you know on
- 00:55:42your career path and your development
- 00:55:45you have to own it it's really up to you
- 00:55:48and and so those are the final parting
- 00:55:50words
- 00:55:52and hannah i definitely have been a
- 00:55:53gracious host thank you so much for the
- 00:55:55invite and we definitely look forward to
