find out how to make your Mac run just
00:00:05
like new hey what's going on everyone
00:00:06
Greg here and the 16 inch MacBook Pro is
00:00:09
finally out and it addressed a lot of
00:00:12
the complaints that people have had with
00:00:13
Apple's laptop lineup however there is
00:00:16
another laptop in this lineup that I
00:00:19
actually had a pretty favorable review
00:00:21
of just a few months ago and that would
00:00:23
be the 13-inch MacBook Pro and even
00:00:26
though the 16 inch MacBook Pro addresses
00:00:28
a lot of complaints it's not necessarily
00:00:30
the laptop for everyone so with the
00:00:33
brand new 16 inch MacBook Pro and that
00:00:35
older entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro
00:00:38
out which one is right for you
00:00:40
well first I think a really big factor
00:00:42
for almost anyone is going to be the
00:00:44
price of these machines so the
00:00:46
entry-level MacBook Pro comes in at one
00:00:48
thousand two hundred and ninety nine
00:00:49
dollars and that is for the two USB C
00:00:52
Thunderbolt 3 port model if you compare
00:00:54
that with a brand new 16 inch MacBook
00:00:55
Pro that starts at two thousand three
00:00:57
hundred and ninety nine dollars and if
00:01:00
you're doing the math that is a $1100
00:01:03
difference but with the cravat that's
00:01:04
because the entry-level 13-inch MacBook
00:01:06
Pro only comes with 128 gigabytes of
00:01:09
storage compared to the base model of
00:01:12
the 16 inch which comes with 512
00:01:14
gigabytes of storage as well as 16
00:01:17
gigabytes of RAM as opposed to the 13
00:01:19
inches eight gigabytes of RAM
00:01:21
now some people could get by on just
00:01:22
eight gigabytes of RAM however that
00:01:25
storage at 128 is awfully low now you do
00:01:28
have the options to spec that up to 256
00:01:31
gigabytes for 1499 dollars but if you
00:01:34
want the same 512 gigabytes of storage
00:01:36
as the higher-end 16 inch model that's
00:01:39
gonna cost you one thousand six hundred
00:01:41
and ninety nine dollars and that's
00:01:43
overall going to be a $500 difference
00:01:45
between the entry-level 13-inch with two
00:01:47
ports and then the higher-end 16 inch
00:01:49
model of course with that 16 inch you
00:01:51
could spec it out even higher than the
00:01:53
base model and of course they even have
00:01:54
that higher end based model which starts
00:01:56
at two thousand seven hundred and ninety
00:01:57
nine dollars not to mention that
00:01:59
although I'm specifically talking about
00:02:01
the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro in
00:02:04
this video there are other 13-inch
00:02:06
MacBook Pros that have four ports and
00:02:09
those start at seventeen hundred and $99
00:02:11
for a 256 gigabyte version
00:02:13
alright next let's talk about the design
00:02:15
of both of these laptops and at first
00:02:17
glance both of these laptops share a
00:02:19
very similar design language but there
00:02:21
are a few key differences here first of
00:02:23
all the 16 inch macbook pro is obviously
00:02:26
much bigger in size this can be a
00:02:28
positive point or a negative point
00:02:30
depending on how you look at it one of
00:02:32
those positives is that it does come
00:02:33
with a bigger 16 inch display as opposed
00:02:36
to the entry-level MacBook Pro which
00:02:38
does come with a smaller 13.3 inch
00:02:40
display the 16 inch also has reduced
00:02:42
bezels making for an overall more
00:02:44
efficient design but the display quality
00:02:46
on both of them is pretty much identical
00:02:49
albeit on the 16 inch you do get the
00:02:51
additional option for variable refresh
00:02:54
rates below 60 Hertz I personally
00:02:56
haven't found these variable refresh
00:02:58
rates to be all that helpful for me but
00:03:00
if you are the type of person that can
00:03:02
take advantage of that that is a plus
00:03:04
now I think everyone likes a nice big
00:03:06
display to look at but that also comes
00:03:08
with some downsides as well first of all
00:03:11
that 16 inch MacBook Pro is
00:03:12
significantly heavier at 4.3 pounds
00:03:15
compared to the 13-inch model which
00:03:17
weighs just about three pounds not only
00:03:19
is the 16 inch model thicker than the 15
00:03:22
inch model but it's also noticeably
00:03:23
thicker than the 13-inch model which was
00:03:26
already slimmer than the old 15 inch
00:03:28
overall that means the 13 inch MacBook
00:03:30
Pro is a much better option for people
00:03:32
who are planning to be super mobile with
00:03:34
this device and if you frequent cafes
00:03:36
with small tables or airplane seats with
00:03:39
little legroom or you just carry around
00:03:41
a smaller bag you'll appreciate the more
00:03:43
compact design of the 13-inch model as I
00:03:46
mentioned before I am comparing the
00:03:47
highest end base version of the 16 inch
00:03:50
macbook pro with the lowest and 13 inch
00:03:53
so on the lowest end of the 13 inch you
00:03:55
only have to Thunderbolt 3 USB C ports
00:03:58
and that introduces minor pain points
00:04:00
for example you can't charge the laptop
00:04:02
on either side of the device like you
00:04:04
could with the 16 inch version now you
00:04:06
could rectify this by spending 1799
00:04:09
dollars for the 4 port model of the 13
00:04:12
inch which isn't featured in this video
00:04:13
but if you are in the market for a 13
00:04:16
inch model and you can live with just
00:04:17
two Thunderbolt 3 USB C ports that is
00:04:20
the model I would recommend I find it to
00:04:23
be a better value than what you would
00:04:25
spend for the
00:04:26
higher-end for port configuration now at
00:04:29
this point in the video you're probably
00:04:30
still deciding which MacBook Pro you
00:04:32
should buy but no matter what MacBook
00:04:35
Pro you buy you need to check out our

00:05:54
this video now another major design
00:05:56
difference between the 16 inch and the
00:05:57
13 inch is actually the keyboards with
00:06:00
the 16 inch macbook pro introducing a
00:06:02
magic keyboard which replaces the old
00:06:05
butterfly keyboard found on the 13-inch
00:06:07
models
00:06:08
now I'll preface this by saying that
00:06:10
butterfly keyboards have had a really
00:06:12
bad reputation of breaking with stuck or
00:06:14
repeating keys for a lot of customers
00:06:17
but I personally have never experienced
00:06:19
this issue with any of my butterfly
00:06:21
keyboards even dating back to the
00:06:23
original 2016 MacBook Pro where it
00:06:27
introduced the butterfly keyboard design
00:06:29
and for the most part I have not seen
00:06:31
any major issues with the 2019 model of
00:06:35
the butterfly keyboard which is the
00:06:37
fourth revision of the butterfly
00:06:39
keyboard
00:06:40
Apple did introduce new materials into
00:06:43
that design which was supposed to fix
00:06:45
the stuck or repeat and key issue and I
00:06:48
think it might have because I'm seeing a
00:06:51
lot less reports of those 2019 models
00:06:54
getting stuck or repeated keys and if
00:06:57
there are any issues with a 2016 to 2019
00:07:00
MacBook Pro with the butterfly keyboard
00:07:02
Apple does have a four year replacement
00:07:06
warranty whenever you purchase any of
00:07:08
these laptops now in terms of just
00:07:10
typing on them it's a toss-up because I
00:07:13
have always liked the way the butterfly
00:07:15
keyboard felt and the shorter travel
00:07:16
never bothered me I actually found it
00:07:18
faster to type on them especially when
00:07:21
doing short bursts of typing but the
00:07:23
magic keyboard on the 16 inch combines a
00:07:25
lot of the tactile punchiness of the
00:07:28
butterfly keyboard into an older design
00:07:30
that uses traditional scissor switch
00:07:32
mechanisms and gives you an enhanced 1
00:07:34
millimeter of key travel so it's really
00:07:36
the best of both worlds the magic
00:07:38
keyboard on the 16 inch also
00:07:40
incorporates a physical Escape key which
00:07:42
is going to be a welcome addition for a
00:07:44
lot of users now in terms of actually
00:07:47
typing on either the 16 inch or the 13
00:07:49
inch for me personally it's a toss-up so
00:07:52
I would say it's a tie that being said
00:07:54
because there have been reliability
00:07:57
issues with the butterfly keyboard in
00:07:59
the past I would have to automatically
00:08:01
give the win over to the 16 inch MacBook
00:08:04
Pros keyboard because that scissor
00:08:06
switch mechanism is a lot less likely to
00:08:09
fail plus I think most customers aren't
00:08:11
like me and they would appreciate the
00:08:13
additional key travel on the 16 inch
00:08:16
model now moving on MacBook Pros have
00:08:18
always had what I would call pretty good
00:08:20
speakers for a laptop and the 13-inch is
00:08:23
no exception here it provides some
00:08:25
pretty great audio for a laptop well I
00:08:28
guess that's until I heard the 16 inch
00:08:30
MacBook Pro speakers which redefines the
00:08:33
quality you would expect from a premium
00:08:35
laptop
00:08:37
[Music]
00:08:54
so easy
00:08:56
[Music]
00:09:06
that's not to say the 13-inch speakers
00:09:09
are horrible because they're still
00:09:11
better than a lot of other laptop
00:09:12
speakers but when you listen to the
00:09:14
16-inch speakers with their better bass
00:09:16
and overall richer sound it's noticeable
00:09:18
that the 13-inch just isn't up to par
00:09:20
speaking of which the microphone on the
00:09:23
16 inch is now also much better than the
00:09:26
13 inch model and while I think it
00:09:28
sounds great especially for inbuilt
00:09:29
laptop microphones and you can
00:09:31
absolutely podcast with them and sound
00:09:33
pretty decent they still aren't better
00:09:35
than a real dedicated microphone so it
00:09:38
might not be a huge deal to most people
00:09:41
this is a test recording using the 16
00:09:43
inch MacBook Pros internal microphone
00:09:46
this is a test recording on the 13-inch
00:09:48
MacBook Pros internal microphone okay
00:09:51
how about another important metric for a
00:09:53
lot of consumers battery life now you
00:09:55
might think that the 16 inch MacBook Pro
00:09:58
with its huge new battery inside of it
00:10:00
would make a huge difference over the
00:10:03
entry-level 13-inch model now battery
00:10:05
life is going to vary a lot depending on
00:10:08
what you're using your laptop for now
00:10:11
Apple rates the 16 inch MacBook Pro at
00:10:13
11 hours completely using it for
00:10:16
wireless web browsing using that sort of
00:10:19
metric we can expect the 16 inch MacBook
00:10:21
Pro to get around 10 hours and 50
00:10:24
minutes of battery life usage using that
00:10:27
same Ridgid metric of just using the
00:10:29
macbook pro as a web browser would get
00:10:31
you around 10 hours and 30 minutes of
00:10:34
continuous battery life again people do
00:10:37
not really just use their laptops for
00:10:39
web browsing so this is a very
00:10:41
unrealistic test but it can kind of give
00:10:44
you a glimpse that the battery life
00:10:46
between both of these devices are
00:10:48
actually pretty similar now you might be
00:10:50
asking how is that possible when the 16
00:10:52
inch MacBook Pro has such a bigger
00:10:54
battery inside of it well that can be
00:10:57
due to a couple of things so for example
00:10:59
a 16 inch macbook pro has a bigger
00:11:01
display that's going to have more of a
00:11:03
battery drain than the smaller 13.3 inch
00:11:05
display the 16 inch MacBook Pro also has
00:11:08
more power hungry intel chips inside of
00:11:11
them and also a dedicated graphics card
00:11:13
so depending on what you're doing that
00:11:15
will cause the battery to drain faster
00:11:17
speaking of those chips
00:11:19
what kind of performance difference can
00:11:21
you expect from going with the lowest
00:11:23
end 13-inch MacBook Pro with its core i5
00:11:26
quad core processor and then going up to
00:11:28
the 16 inch MacBook Pro with its beefy
00:11:32
8 core I 9 well if we're going by
00:11:34
everyone's favorite benchmark Geekbench
00:11:36
you can get a single core score of 944
00:11:39
and a multi-core score of 3000 899 on
00:11:43
the entry-level 13-inch model if we
00:11:45
compare that to the 16 inch model with
00:11:47
the core i9 2.3 gigahertz we are getting
00:11:50
a single core score of 1103 and a
00:11:53
multi-core score of 6417 again those
00:11:56
numbers really don't mean anything
00:11:58
they're just a benchmark so I wanted to
00:12:01
do a real-world test of exporting a 4k
00:12:04
10-minute video project in ProRes now
00:12:08
obviously the 16 inch MacBook Pro
00:12:10
finished faster at this export finishing
00:12:13
in at 5 minutes and 2 seconds the
00:12:15
13-inch MacBook Pro took 8 minutes and
00:12:18
55 seconds to complete the same exact
00:12:21
export so roughly about a 4 minute
00:12:24
difference between both of those export
00:12:26
times another difference I wanted to
00:12:27
test out is the graphics power because
00:12:29
the 13-inch model is using an integrated
00:12:32
graphics card while the 16 inch model
00:12:34
has a dedicated graphics card to test
00:12:37
out these graphics cards I used the
00:12:38
Unigine heaven benchmark and set both of
00:12:40
the machines to high settings at the end
00:12:42
of the test the 13-inch MacBook Pro got
00:12:44
an average FPS of 30.6 with an overall
00:12:47
score of 772 with the Intel iris plus
00:12:51
graphic 645 running that same test on
00:12:53
the 16 inch MacBook Pro I got an average
00:12:55
frame rate of 82.5 and an overall score
00:12:59
of 2078 with the Radeon Pro 5500 M with
00:13:03
4 gigabytes of video memory so running
00:13:05
that test we are seeing more than double
00:13:08
the performance in terms of graphics for
00:13:10
the 16 inch model and yes you're not
00:13:12
surprised this is to be expected the 16
00:13:15
inch macbook pro has much more powerful
00:13:17
CPUs and a much more powerful GPU than
00:13:20
the entry-level 13-inch model that's to
00:13:23
be expected with a beefier 6 to 8 core
00:13:25
and dedicated graphics card however I
00:13:27
thought it was important to show you
00:13:29
these results so you know what sort of
00:13:31
expected increase in perform
00:13:33
you can get when you're spending more
00:13:35
money because maybe you don't mind
00:13:37
waiting for longer exports in Final Cut
00:13:39
Pro 10 or maybe your work doesn't
00:13:41
involve graphics demanding tasks or
00:13:43
maybe you just value increased
00:13:45
portability above all else and at this
00:13:47
point you probably notice in this video
00:13:49
that there hasn't been any sort of
00:13:51
scoring system and that's on purpose
00:13:54
because in the end there is no clear
00:13:57
winner between both of these laptops
00:13:59
that's because people's tastes and needs
00:14:02
are different some might prefer
00:14:03
portability thinness and lightness and
00:14:06
an overall more inexpensive laptop while
00:14:08
others want the biggest display best
00:14:10
performance and don't mind spending at
00:14:13
least two thousand and four hundred
00:14:14
dollars to have it all and as a viewer
00:14:17
you need to decide which of these
00:14:19
features between the 16 inch and 13-inch
00:14:22
are ultimately more important to you and
00:14:24
as a viewer you should also be aware
00:14:26
that refreshes of the 13 inch MacBook
00:14:28
Pro are expected by next year with at
00:14:31
least an update changing the Butterfly
00:14:33
keyboard to the new magic keyboard found
00:14:35
in the 16 inch model so if you came away
00:14:37
watching this video and you absolutely
00:14:39
want a smaller sized MacBook Pro but
00:14:42
hate the keys on the 13-inch model or
00:14:44
you are worried about their reliability
00:14:46
I would recommend waiting until 2020 to
00:14:49
purchase a new laptop if you can but
00:14:52
ultimately in the end there is no
00:14:54
perfect laptop and both of these
00:14:56
machines have their pros and cons but
00:14:58
