- 00:00:16want to start off by telling you that I
- 00:00:20think it is probably a good idea and I
- 00:00:22try to give this advice at most of my
- 00:00:24talks it's probably a very good idea
- 00:00:26when somebody stands in front of you and
- 00:00:29is proclaimed by virtue of their bio and
- 00:00:31by virtue of their curriculum Vita their
- 00:00:35resume that part of which is read to you
- 00:00:36by way of the nice comments made about
- 00:00:38them by others proclaim to be an expert
- 00:00:40it's probably a very good idea to ask
- 00:00:43yourself why it is that you're listening
- 00:00:46to that person and not somebody else in
- 00:00:48this culture we are led to believe that
- 00:00:51if someone stands before you a
- 00:00:53proclaimed expert that it must be
- 00:00:55because they are indeed the brightest
- 00:00:57bulb in the box that they know something
- 00:01:00that the other people don't know I am
- 00:01:02NOT standing in front of you and you are
- 00:01:03not listening to me because I am the
- 00:01:06most informed person in the country on
- 00:01:07racism or white privilege not because
- 00:01:10I'm the best speaker on those subjects I
- 00:01:12am fairly good and I intend to
- 00:01:13demonstrate that to you amply in the
- 00:01:15next hour it is not because I'm the best
- 00:01:17writer on the subject though I am ok
- 00:01:19with that as well
- 00:01:20it is instead because I and I know this
- 00:01:24fit the aesthetic that is needed on too
- 00:01:28many campuses and too many communities
- 00:01:30around the country in order to come in
- 00:01:32and to give this talk nothing that I am
- 00:01:35going to say tonight or at least very
- 00:01:38little originated in my head nothing or
- 00:01:40at least very little of what I say
- 00:01:42tonight is in fact new almost every
- 00:01:45single thing that I'm going to say this
- 00:01:47evening is wisdom that has been shared
- 00:01:50with me either patiently or sometimes
- 00:01:52not so patiently by people of color who
- 00:01:54have in almost every instance forgotten
- 00:01:56more about the subjects of racism and
- 00:01:58white privilege since breakfast
- 00:01:59yesterday then I will likely ever know
- 00:02:02and yet they will not be asked to give
- 00:02:0585 engagements around the country this
- 00:02:07year or next on this subject not because
- 00:02:10they have not the wisdom to do it but
- 00:02:12because privilege the subject but I'll
- 00:02:14deal with tonight bestows upon me that
- 00:02:17advantage and so as a matter of
- 00:02:19responsibility and accountability I have
- 00:02:20to own that up front so that when you go
- 00:02:23away from this this evening thinking to
- 00:02:24yourself my goodness that was good and
- 00:02:27I'm
- 00:02:27or that's my subliminal way to tell you
- 00:02:29you're gonna think it's just great and
- 00:02:31when you go away from here thinking that
- 00:02:34I have filled your heads with all this
- 00:02:35great knowledge and wisdom please know
- 00:02:37that it is not mine and the next time
- 00:02:39you hear it from a person of color the
- 00:02:41next time it is shared with you for
- 00:02:43those in the audience particularly you
- 00:02:44were white the next time it is shared
- 00:02:46with you by a person of color as it will
- 00:02:48be and as it has been in one form or
- 00:02:50another please listen to it and please
- 00:02:53know that it is from that source that I
- 00:02:55get virtually all of my material we will
- 00:02:58know that we have made progress only on
- 00:02:59that day when a person of color can get
- 00:03:01up and give the talk that I'm about to
- 00:03:03give and be taken half as seriously as I
- 00:03:05expect to be taken it's interesting to
- 00:03:11see so many people come out to these
- 00:03:12events because to hear some people tell
- 00:03:14it you would think that this
- 00:03:16conversation was almost wholly
- 00:03:17unnecessary to pay attention to the
- 00:03:20American political process and what the
- 00:03:22candidates for this nation's highest
- 00:03:24office have to say and not say about the
- 00:03:27issues that are of importance to them
- 00:03:29and thus we are to presume importance to
- 00:03:31the nation you would get the impression
- 00:03:32that the issue of race that the issue of
- 00:03:35racism that the issue of discrimination
- 00:03:37and certainly that the issue of white
- 00:03:38racial privilege were non-existent
- 00:03:40issues that they were of really no
- 00:03:43importance or very little importance
- 00:03:45because you will not hear and have not
- 00:03:47heard any of the candidates for
- 00:03:49presidency of the United States and
- 00:03:51either party of whatever political
- 00:03:52ideology make this an issue yes they
- 00:03:56talk about poverty and occasionally they
- 00:03:59talk about schooling and education they
- 00:04:01talk about healthcare they talk about
- 00:04:03all of those things but not once have
- 00:04:05any of those candidates tried to
- 00:04:06directly connect the role that racism
- 00:04:08the role that racial discrimination the
- 00:04:11role that institutional racial
- 00:04:12oppression and white privilege play in
- 00:04:14regards to health care in regard to
- 00:04:16housing and regard to schooling in
- 00:04:18regard to poverty it is as if those
- 00:04:20issues exist in a vacuum
- 00:04:22and have no relationship to color have
- 00:04:25no relationship to race have no
- 00:04:27relationship to a history of racial
- 00:04:29subordination what does it say about our
- 00:04:33nation's political process and about our
- 00:04:35nation's political and social culture
- 00:04:37that none of these candidates for office
- 00:04:40has seen fit
- 00:04:41to tell the American public the
- 00:04:42following things all of which you would
- 00:04:46think would be campaign issues of some
- 00:04:48importance at least to some people and
- 00:04:50yet they won't say them why is it that
- 00:04:53none of them mention that it was last
- 00:04:54year 2006 not 1996 not 1986 not 1976 or
- 00:05:0266 but 2006 which witnessed the highest
- 00:05:07number of race-based housing
- 00:05:10discrimination complaints in recorded
- 00:05:11history the Fair Housing Act was passed
- 00:05:14in 1968 the year of my birth and yet it
- 00:05:18was not 1968 that witnessed the highest
- 00:05:21level of discrimination complaints based
- 00:05:22on race it was 38 years later in 2006
- 00:05:27what does it say about our culture and
- 00:05:29the politicians the choices we have been
- 00:05:31given for leader of the so-called free
- 00:05:34world that none of these candidates sees
- 00:05:35fit to mention as they talk about health
- 00:05:38care which subject they do talk about
- 00:05:40with some regularity what does it say
- 00:05:43that none of them have seen fit to
- 00:05:45mention the research that was published
- 00:05:48in the American Journal of Public Health
- 00:05:50in 2004 which had looked at ten years of
- 00:05:55excess mortality data for African
- 00:05:58Americans from 1991 to 2000 looking at
- 00:06:01the number of black folks who had died
- 00:06:03above and beyond the number that would
- 00:06:05have died but for their blackness in
- 00:06:08effect and the social and economic
- 00:06:10conditions that ascribe and essentially
- 00:06:12adhere to blackness in this country and
- 00:06:15what they found in that study which
- 00:06:16received almost no media attention again
- 00:06:19published in an academic journal not
- 00:06:22read by the average American not read by
- 00:06:24political candidates read by doctors and
- 00:06:27people who research the healthcare
- 00:06:28industry but that's about it this study
- 00:06:30found that between 1991 and 2000 there
- 00:06:33were almost 1 million black people in
- 00:06:35this country who died who would not have
- 00:06:38died had they merely been white and had
- 00:06:40the average health care quality and
- 00:06:42access of the typical white person in
- 00:06:44this country had they been living in
- 00:06:46neighborhoods like white neighborhoods
- 00:06:48in which the levels of exposure to
- 00:06:50toxicity had been as low as it is in the
- 00:06:53typical white neighborhood as opposed to
- 00:06:55excess exposure to toxic pollutants etc
- 00:06:58in black and brown spaces almost 1
- 00:07:00million excess dead people in this case
- 00:07:04black folks who wouldn't have died had
- 00:07:06the system of healthcare access and
- 00:07:09exposure to toxic spin equal between
- 00:07:12white folks and black folks how is a
- 00:07:14million dead black people not news
- 00:07:16you see if James Byrd gets dragged to
- 00:07:19death behind a truck in Jasper Texas you
- 00:07:21will hear about that and well you should
- 00:07:23if one individual is the victim of a
- 00:07:26vicious hate crime you will hear about
- 00:07:28that and well you should
- 00:07:29but if nearly 1 million people die not
- 00:07:33because of bigotry not because of hatred
- 00:07:36not because of some white supremacist
- 00:07:38organization but because of systemic and
- 00:07:40institutionalized injustice you will not
- 00:07:42hear anything how is it not news and why
- 00:07:47are no candidates mentioning that
- 00:07:49according to the Department of Justice
- 00:07:50in a study released in 2004 black and
- 00:07:53Latino males are three times more likely
- 00:07:56than white males to have their cars
- 00:07:57stopped and searched for drugs even
- 00:08:00though white males are four and a half
- 00:08:02times more likely to actually have drugs
- 00:08:04on us on the occasion when we are
- 00:08:06stopped now think about that because
- 00:08:10that suggests that racial profiling is
- 00:08:12not just racist we know that that is
- 00:08:14redundant but it's also pretty
- 00:08:16stupid-ass law enforcement or is it
- 00:08:20because I guess it's only stupid if you
- 00:08:23think the purpose of the war on drugs is
- 00:08:24actually to get drugs off the street
- 00:08:27because if that were the purpose putting
- 00:08:29aside whether or not we ought to deal
- 00:08:32with a medical and a health problem
- 00:08:34known as drug addiction with war
- 00:08:35metaphors in the first place
- 00:08:37a different lecture for a different
- 00:08:39night even if we assume that that is a
- 00:08:42good policy let us be clear that that is
- 00:08:44not what we're fighting we're not
- 00:08:45fighting a war on drugs because the
- 00:08:47first rule of any war is to go where the
- 00:08:49enemy is and if the white folks are the
- 00:08:52ones with the drugs in the car and the
- 00:08:54black and brown folks are the ones
- 00:08:55getting stopped the people fighting this
- 00:08:57war are either supremely stupid or just
- 00:09:00have written a really bad short term
- 00:09:02memory like they keep forgetting oh damn
- 00:09:05I pulled over another guy named Martinez
- 00:09:07I keep forgetting it's white people it's
- 00:09:10white people damn it I got I got to
- 00:09:12write a note and put it on the dashboard
- 00:09:13I I don't know what's wrong with me
- 00:09:18maybe that's it
- 00:09:20you know or maybe it's something else I
- 00:09:23do trainings with law enforcement not a
- 00:09:25hell of a lot if for reasons you can
- 00:09:27probably guess and I ask law enforcement
- 00:09:32officers what's the first thing you
- 00:09:33think when you see a young black or
- 00:09:34Latino male driving a nice car in your
- 00:09:37neighborhood and they all without fail
- 00:09:39and without exception we'll say drug
- 00:09:40dealer I then ask them what's the first
- 00:09:42thing you think when you see a young
- 00:09:44white male same age driving the same
- 00:09:46kind of car in that same community and
- 00:09:48they will say without exception without
- 00:09:49hesitation without fail spoiled little
- 00:09:52rich kid daddy probably bought him a car
- 00:09:55keep in mind we've been together for
- 00:09:57about 90 seconds of the workshop at this
- 00:09:59point we have two hours left and they
- 00:10:01have just outed themselves as racist
- 00:10:03because what they have said is that they
- 00:10:05are making snap judgments on the basis
- 00:10:07of only color that work to the detriment
- 00:10:10of people of color the benefit of white
- 00:10:11people we still got two hours to go so
- 00:10:13you know it's going to be fun from that
- 00:10:15point forward these are people sworn to
- 00:10:19protect and to serve it's right there on
- 00:10:21the car right there on the side of the
- 00:10:24car and in the first 90 seconds they are
- 00:10:28acknowledging these racial biases how is
- 00:10:30that not an issue how is it not an issue
- 00:10:32that according to that Justice
- 00:10:34Department report while black and brown
- 00:10:36folk are having their wheel wells ripped
- 00:10:38apart on the side of the road their
- 00:10:39trunks splayed open their dashboards
- 00:10:43ripped apart in a search for drugs which
- 00:10:44aren't even there white people like me
- 00:10:46notice I said like me because I'm not
- 00:10:49trying to tell you anything about me
- 00:10:51that you don't need to know and for
- 00:10:52which the statute of limitations has not
- 00:10:54yet expired are driving by the roadblock
- 00:10:58with a trunk full of weed
- 00:11:02and we're just waving because we're not
- 00:11:05suspected therefore we're not detected
- 00:11:07therefore we're not punished how is that
- 00:11:09not an issue how is it not an issue that
- 00:11:12the typical white family in America
- 00:11:14thanks to this history this legacy of
- 00:11:16institutionalized oppression for some
- 00:11:19and advantage and privilege for others
- 00:11:21how is it not news that the average
- 00:11:22white family in America not the average
- 00:11:25rich white family the average white
- 00:11:27family has twelve times the accumulated
- 00:11:29net worth of the average African
- 00:11:31American family eight times the
- 00:11:34accumulated net worth of the average
- 00:11:35Latino family in large measure because
- 00:11:38those white average families have had
- 00:11:40parents or grandparents who even if they
- 00:11:42didn't have much even if they were not
- 00:11:44rich nonetheless were able to procure a
- 00:11:46little house a little property maybe
- 00:11:47with an FHA or a VA loan in the middle
- 00:11:50of the 20th century loans that were all
- 00:11:52but off-limits to people of color as
- 00:11:55they gave hundreds of billions of
- 00:11:56dollars worth of assets and equity to
- 00:11:58those who were white so that even white
- 00:12:01working-class families on average even
- 00:12:03white families with less than 15,000 a
- 00:12:06year in annual income which depending on
- 00:12:08family size that is technically legally
- 00:12:11the poverty limit and yet the average
- 00:12:13white family with low-income less than
- 00:12:1515,000 has the same average net worth as
- 00:12:18a typical black family with 60,000 or
- 00:12:20more in annual income so that even those
- 00:12:22African American families that are
- 00:12:24professional good jobs occupational
- 00:12:26status good education etc and pretty
- 00:12:28good incomes are still in worse shape in
- 00:12:31terms of wealth and assets material
- 00:12:33goods which are really what matter in
- 00:12:35the long run your income if you're
- 00:12:36dependent on that your one paycheck away
- 00:12:38from nothing if you don't have assets if
- 00:12:41you don't have wealth if you don't have
- 00:12:42something accumulated your income means
- 00:12:43very little in the case of an economic
- 00:12:45downturn and these working-class white
- 00:12:47families who were struggling make no
- 00:12:48mistake about it nonetheless are on
- 00:12:51average going to be better off than
- 00:12:53those black families with four times as
- 00:12:55much annual pay how can that not be an
- 00:12:57issue I am suggesting to you that the
- 00:12:59failure to talk about race the failure
- 00:13:02to talk about racism and inequality on
- 00:13:04the basis of color feeds the denial that
- 00:13:08is already far too prevalent among the
- 00:13:09white community
- 00:13:12and having been white all of my life
- 00:13:14[Music]
- 00:13:15I've been surrounded by that denial for
- 00:13:18a very long time a few years back white
- 00:13:26Americans were asked whether or not we
- 00:13:27believed that racial discrimination was
- 00:13:29still a significant national problem for
- 00:13:31people of color or whether it was just a
- 00:13:33problem you know like junk mail wrong
- 00:13:38phone number two in the morning you
- 00:13:39can't get back to sleep it's raining and
- 00:13:41you want to go outside for a jog you
- 00:13:42know a problem but one you'll get over
- 00:13:44you know whether it wasn't much of a
- 00:13:47problem wasn't a problem at all we just
- 00:13:48weren't sure they also asked black and
- 00:13:50brown folk this question folks of color
- 00:13:52won't surprise you said yes it is a
- 00:13:54significant problem actually and not
- 00:13:56just because I read about it in the
- 00:13:57sociology textbook I actually have lived
- 00:14:00in and would be more than happy to tell
- 00:14:01you what kind of problem it's been but
- 00:14:02these were pollsters and they didn't
- 00:14:03care about that they just wanted the yes
- 00:14:05or no than they were on to the next
- 00:14:06house and they asked white folks is it
- 00:14:09or is it not a significant national
- 00:14:10problem racial discrimination for people
- 00:14:13of color and against people of color and
- 00:14:14only six percent six out of 100 said yes
- 00:14:18that it was a significant national
- 00:14:20problem just to give you an idea of how
- 00:14:22bad that is I would have you compare it
- 00:14:25to a survey taken a few years earlier
- 00:14:26where approximately 12% of white
- 00:14:28Americans said we believe there was a
- 00:14:30fairly decent chance that Elvis Presley
- 00:14:32might still be alive I I don't know how
- 00:14:39good you are at math I'm not very good
- 00:14:42myself but that's a ratio that I can
- 00:14:45calculate what that means is that white
- 00:14:47Americans are twice as likely to believe
- 00:14:51that Elvis might still be alive than we
- 00:14:54are to believe what people of color tell
- 00:14:56us they experience on a fairly regular
- 00:14:58basis that is denial so profound as to
- 00:15:02boggle the mind but there it is
- 00:15:04and the people who are saying it are not
- 00:15:07mean-spirited they're not hard harder
- 00:15:08they're not bad people I firmly believe
- 00:15:10that most people are good people I could
- 00:15:12be wrong about this but I have two
- 00:15:13little girls ages 6 and 4 and I choose
- 00:15:15as a parent to believe that most people
- 00:15:18are good if you have evidence of the
- 00:15:19contrary keep it to yourself I do not
- 00:15:20want to know it or hear at this evening
- 00:15:22what I do know is that those individuals
- 00:15:25who said that
- 00:15:26as well-meaning as they may have been
- 00:15:27that they really didn't see it as a
- 00:15:29significant problem aren't new in their
- 00:15:31denial see it's one thing for young
- 00:15:33people to think that the problem is
- 00:15:34solved I almost get that I almost
- 00:15:37understand it because if you're under
- 00:15:39the age of 25 maybe even under the age
- 00:15:41of 35 what you know what we tend to know
- 00:15:44younger people about this history and
- 00:15:46about this legacy is what we see in that
- 00:15:48grainy black-and-white footage every MLK
- 00:15:50day or maybe during Black History Month
- 00:15:52if I were to ask you do you believe that
- 00:15:57folks of color had equal opportunity and
- 00:15:59were treated equally in this country in
- 00:16:021963 or whether or not black children
- 00:16:06were treated equally in schools and had
- 00:16:08equal educational opportunity in 1962 I
- 00:16:11know right now that no one in here would
- 00:16:14say well of course you know naturally
- 00:16:15they did 1963 there was a damn good year

- 00:16:20you talking about everyone regardless of
- 00:16:23your position about 2007 would quickly
- 00:16:25acknowledge how bad it was back in the
- 00:16:27day because it's no sweat off your back
- 00:16:2944 45 years later it's easy to talk
- 00:16:33about how bad it was but now see here's
- 00:16:34the trick what do you think white folks
- 00:16:37said when those very questions were put
- 00:16:39to them in 1963 and in 1962 at a time
- 00:16:45when the apartheid system in this
- 00:16:47country was very much in full effect it
- 00:16:49was before the Civil Rights Act before
- 00:16:51the Voting Rights Act before the Fair
- 00:16:52Housing Act in retrospect we can all
- 00:16:54look back and say how profoundly unequal
- 00:16:56it was how profoundly unequal it was and
- 00:17:00yet when white folks were asked some of
- 00:17:01them our parents our grandparents great
- 00:17:04uncles great aunts these ancestors of
- 00:17:07ours were asked the very same question
- 00:17:10in 1963 do you think that people of
- 00:17:13color didn't use that turret's of racial
- 00:17:15minorities do you think that racial
- 00:17:16minorities are treated equally in your
- 00:17:18community and 80% of white folks said
- 00:17:20yes in 1962 when Gallup asked do you
- 00:17:24think that black children receive equal
- 00:17:26educational opportunity in your
- 00:17:28community 90 percent approximately of
- 00:17:30white folks said yes nothing to see here
- 00:17:33what is all this complaining what is
- 00:17:35this march on Washington
- 00:17:38I don't get it I don't understand it in
- 00:17:41fact the very month of that March which
- 00:17:43now it seems like every white liberal
- 00:17:44wants you to believe they were at the
- 00:17:49very month of that March white folks
- 00:17:54were asked by Newsweek what they thought
- 00:17:56about it they said two-thirds of whites
- 00:17:58said that dr. King and the movement were
- 00:18:00pushing too far too fast asking for too
- 00:18:02much and too soon the idea that this
- 00:18:06country was ready to hear this even at
- 00:18:08the time and we know how vicious it was
- 00:18:10is a lie what does it say that white
- 00:18:13folks were in denial in 62 and 63 what
- 00:18:16does it say that if you gone back to the
- 00:18:1730s and asked the question I think white
- 00:18:19folks were clear then the 1890s what did
- 00:18:23white folks say those southern editors
- 00:18:24of newspapers where I'm from they would
- 00:18:26say we get along fine with our Negroes
- 00:18:28down here if you Yankees would just
- 00:18:30leave us alone and stop messing in our
- 00:18:31business go back to 1850 and read what
- 00:18:34dr. Samuel Carr tried a well-respected
- 00:18:36member in good standing of the medical
- 00:18:39profession in this country said not only
- 00:18:41was racism not a problem there weren't
- 00:18:43even a word for that yet slavery wasn't
- 00:18:45a problem so much so that he decided
- 00:18:47that any slave who would run away
- 00:18:48obviously had a mental illness because
- 00:18:51you'd have to be crazy to run away from
- 00:18:53bondage so he came up with a term he
- 00:18:56called it draped amania don't even know
- 00:18:58what the root of that is don't want to
- 00:19:00know don't understand where the word
- 00:19:01came from but that's what he called it
- 00:19:03draped amania you must be crazy you must
- 00:19:05be mentally ill to run away from your
- 00:19:07loving master denial in every generation
- 00:19:122007 1963 the 30s the 1890s the 1850s my
- 00:19:17point being that in every generation
- 00:19:19members of the dominant group have said
- 00:19:22there is no problem and in every
- 00:19:24generation without fail we have been
- 00:19:27wrong and in every generation people of
- 00:19:29color those who are the targets of that
- 00:19:31oppression and subordination have said
- 00:19:33there is a problem and in every
- 00:19:35generation without fail they have been
- 00:19:37right so the question for us today is
- 00:19:41what are the odds
- 00:19:42honestly that people of color who have
- 00:19:46never gotten it wrong have suddenly lost
- 00:19:48their frickin
- 00:19:50minds and have suddenly become unable to
- 00:19:53see truth and to separate it from
- 00:19:56fiction and counter to that what are the
- 00:19:58odds that white folks who have never
- 00:19:59gotten it right yet have suddenly become
- 00:20:02highly highly perceptive the odds are
- 00:20:06pretty long and again it's not because
- 00:20:08white folks are insensitive or
- 00:20:10hard-hearted let alone stupid but it is
- 00:20:12that those of us who are white have the
- 00:20:13luxury of not knowing black and brown
- 00:20:15truth we don't know because we don't
- 00:20:18have to know we are not tested on it if
- 00:20:22I don't know what people of color
- 00:20:24experience what happens to me in this
- 00:20:26country virtually nothing but if people
- 00:20:29of color don't know my reality if people
- 00:20:31of color don't know white reality better
- 00:20:32than white folks have to know it if they
- 00:20:35cannot regurgitate it to us better than
- 00:20:37we would ever be able to regurgitate it
- 00:20:39to ourselves all hell breaks loose so
- 00:20:42people of color are gonna have to know
- 00:20:43white history white literature white art
- 00:20:45white theatre white poetry white drama I
- 00:20:47know we don't call it that
- 00:20:48that's sort of the point when your stuff
- 00:20:53is the stuff against which everybody
- 00:20:55else's stuff is compared and found
- 00:20:57lacking you don't have to name it it's
- 00:21:00just the norm that's why for those still
- 00:21:02confused we don't have white History
- 00:21:03Month because we have several they go by
- 00:21:05the tricky names of May and June July
- 00:21:07August September pretty much any month
- 00:21:12[Applause]
- 00:21:14that we have not designated as someone
- 00:21:17else's month that's my history month but
- 00:21:22we take it for granted because we don't
- 00:21:24have to know other folks reality that's
- 00:21:27a privilege that's an advantage that's a
- 00:21:30head start and it's one we must think
- 00:21:33about see that's the other piece of this
- 00:21:35right it's one thing for white folks to
- 00:21:37acknowledge racism because you know
- 00:21:38white liberals will god bless
- 00:21:43white liberals will acknowledge that
- 00:21:45racism is real oh my goodness we should
- 00:21:48do something about that yes yes we
- 00:21:50should it's terrible that racial
- 00:21:54profiling that housing discrimination my
- 00:21:56goodness it's awful yes yes yes it is
- 00:22:00but just because we acknowledge racism
- 00:22:03and discrimination doesn't mean that
- 00:22:05will necessarily acknowledge the flip
- 00:22:07side of that doesn't mean that we will
- 00:22:09acknowledge that for everyone who's
- 00:22:12targeted by that discrimination which
- 00:22:14we're willing to admit exists there is
- 00:22:16somebody else not being targeted guess
- 00:22:18whom and that those individuals are
- 00:22:21elevated by definition and receive an
- 00:22:24advantage receive a subsidy receive a
- 00:22:26privilege in the process you see we like
- 00:22:28to talk about those who were down as if
- 00:22:30there is no up right we like to use
- 00:22:33language that obscures the
- 00:22:35interrelationship of down and up now
- 00:22:37down has no meaning without an up it is
- 00:22:40a relative term but we talk about those
- 00:22:42at the bottom of the hierarchy not
- 00:22:44paying attention to the fact that for
- 00:22:45anyone who's down someone is above them
- 00:22:47and they're above them because they're
- 00:22:48down we use this language that makes it
- 00:22:52impossible and when I say we I don't
- 00:22:53mean like right-wing folk I even talking
- 00:22:56about that I'm talking about nice
- 00:22:57liberal caring service providers people
- 00:23:01who just want to help right I just want
- 00:23:05to help the underprivileged that's the
- 00:23:07word we use I've used it before I don't
- 00:23:09use it anymore except in a speech like
- 00:23:12this we just want to help the
- 00:23:14underprivileged but what's wrong with
- 00:23:16that word folks at least two things that
- 00:23:18ought to be pretty obvious to you right
- 00:23:19number one is it's a passively
- 00:23:21constructed term right it's the passive
- 00:23:23voice as my English teacher would say
- 00:23:25underprivileged doesn't imply that
- 00:23:27anybody did anything to anyone it's just
- 00:23:30there's privilege and I will be damned
- 00:23:32there you are under it
- 00:23:35if we could just figure out how you got
- 00:23:37down there we could solve all the
- 00:23:41problems of the Western world but we
- 00:23:43don't want to know how you got down
- 00:23:45there no that's why we came up with that
- 00:23:47bumper sticker stuff happens that's the
- 00:23:49g-rated version that's a bumper sticker
- 00:23:52that only only a straight white
- 00:23:54upper-middle class male could have made
- 00:23:57because anyone who isn't straight anyone
- 00:23:59who isn't male anyone who isn't white
- 00:24:01anyone who is an upper middle class
- 00:24:02knows that stuff doesn't just happen
- 00:24:05stuff gets done by people to people
- 00:24:08nothing is a coincidence nothing is
- 00:24:11random it is an osmosis and so we act as
- 00:24:16if it's some passive thing but yet
- 00:24:18that's not the case and the second
- 00:24:19problem with the term under privilege is
- 00:24:21even bigger than the first one is it's a
- 00:24:22relative term
- 00:24:23again this is grammar man you don't like
- 00:24:26this you can disagree with anything else
- 00:24:28I say tonight if you have a problem with
- 00:24:29this piece right here you must take it
- 00:24:31up with your third grade grammar teacher
- 00:24:33because it is not on me if we use the
- 00:24:36word underprivileged and by definition
- 00:24:37there must be an over privilege but we
- 00:24:41don't use that word in polite
- 00:24:42conversation indeed it doesn't exist in
- 00:24:44any dictionary to be found on the planet
- 00:24:47if you don't believe me
- 00:24:48go back to your res hall go back to your
- 00:24:50apartment go back to your home go back
- 00:24:52to your place of employment and tomorrow
- 00:24:54I want you to punch in two little words
- 00:24:56the first one under-privileged make no
- 00:24:58mistake your spell check is gonna
- 00:24:59recognize that word it's in their
- 00:25:01dictionary they can give you the
- 00:25:02definition they can give you the synonym
- 00:25:04they can give you the antonym they can
- 00:25:06show you the phonetic way in which you
- 00:25:07should spell it now come down one line
- 00:25:09type in the word over privileged and
- 00:25:11watch how fast that little red line pops
- 00:25:15up that line which says nope you're an
- 00:25:20idiot
- 00:25:23making up words that don't exist try
- 00:25:27again and get back to us but if there's
- 00:25:31an under privilege there must be an over
- 00:25:33privileged why don't we talk about it
- 00:25:34because that would require that we
- 00:25:36acknowledge that if there are two to
- 00:25:39three million people being targeted for
- 00:25:40race-based housing discrimination
- 00:25:41because they are people of color every
- 00:25:43year that is two to three million more
- 00:25:45places I can live if people of color are
- 00:25:50being targeted and profiled and I'm not
- 00:25:52that is an advantage it may or may not
- 00:25:54have material consequences a lot of
- 00:25:56privilege isn't about material
- 00:25:58acquisition so please know this when I
- 00:26:00talk about white privilege I don't even
- 00:26:02mean money necessarily for some it
- 00:26:05definitely translates to that for some
- 00:26:07it has certainly meant that but even for
- 00:26:09those white folks who don't have that
- 00:26:10money
- 00:26:11white privilege is real at the
- 00:26:13psychological level well I grew up for
- 00:26:20the first 18 years of my life in an 850
- 00:26:22square foot apartment where the plumbing
- 00:26:24was always leaking the air-conditioning
- 00:26:26was constantly busted we had no savings
- 00:26:28we ran cars into the ground until they
- 00:26:30just stopped running took no vacations
- 00:26:32had no assets had no credit that wasn't
- 00:26:34bad credit so I was one of those white
- 00:26:37folks who certainly didn't have class
- 00:26:38privilege and yet I had the knowledge
- 00:26:40that I was perceived in school as highly
- 00:26:43capable not because of my class
- 00:26:45background which was no great shakes but
- 00:26:46because I was seen as a bright capable
- 00:26:49white child and students of color who
- 00:26:51were every bit as capable as I were
- 00:26:54tracked low while I was tracked high I
- 00:26:56could make bad grades and I never seemed
- 00:26:57to fall out of favor in those types of
- 00:27:00classes because I was seen as simply
- 00:27:02underperforming not quite living up to
- 00:27:04my standards you know so I received the
- 00:27:06psychological edge of knowing that in
- 00:27:08those classrooms if I didn't do well and
- 00:27:10I often didn't I was a bad student
- 00:27:12but if I didn't do well I never had to
- 00:27:14worry that that would be ascribed to my
- 00:27:15race I never had to worry that someone
- 00:27:18would say well of course he's not good
- 00:27:20at that because you know he's white
- 00:27:23because unless I was going to be trying
- 00:27:25out for a job that involved jumping or
- 00:27:27dancing
- 00:27:27what stereotype exactly is working
- 00:27:30against me as a white person there
- 00:27:32aren't many but for people of color it's
- 00:27:34a whole different ballgame knowing that
- 00:27:37if
- 00:27:37they underperform in an academic
- 00:27:39environment knowing that if they end the
- 00:27:41sentence with a preposition when they
- 00:27:42answer that question in class or if they
- 00:27:44mispronounce a word or if they simply
- 00:27:46answer the question wrong they have to
- 00:27:49wonder whether they dropped the ball not
- 00:27:51just for themselves but for all those
- 00:27:53coming after them who look like them
- 00:27:55whose presence on that campus or in that
- 00:27:58job complex in that office is constantly
- 00:28:01under scrutiny constantly being
- 00:28:03questioned constantly being double guest
- 00:28:05second and third and fourth guest do
- 00:28:07they really belong here that's what it
- 00:28:10means to be white is never having to
- 00:28:11worry that you're going to trigger a
- 00:28:12series of negative stereotypes about
- 00:28:14your group and if you're not able to
- 00:28:16overcome them your opportunities will be
- 00:28:18limited yes white women will face that
- 00:28:20on a gender level but on a racial level
- 00:28:22those who are white will never have to
- 00:28:25worry that their missteps that
- 00:28:27our missteps will be attributed to our
- 00:28:29racial defect of some sort and the
- 00:28:32research is very clear that that
- 00:28:34privilege having one less thing to worry
- 00:28:35about having one less thing to sweat in
- 00:28:38the classroom trying to get the loan at
- 00:28:40the bank at the job or whatever the case
- 00:28:42might be but that has significant
- 00:28:44dividends because to have one less thing
- 00:28:46to sweat in a competitive society is the
- 00:28:48thing that separates oftentimes success
- 00:28:50from failure or big success for medium
- 00:28:54success from smaller success and the
- 00:28:56research is very clear that on an
- 00:28:58academic environment in particular those
- 00:29:00persons who are constantly having to
- 00:29:02worry about whether or not their
- 00:29:04performance is going to trigger that
- 00:29:06negative group stereotype that the mere
- 00:29:08anxiety caused by worrying about that is
- 00:29:11enough to drive down academic
- 00:29:13performance on standardized tests and in
- 00:29:15classroom performance even when they are
- 00:29:17equally or better qualified than their
- 00:29:19counterparts who don't have to think
- 00:29:20about that so it's a huge advantage to
- 00:29:23have that one less thing to concern
- 00:29:25oneself with to not have the burden of
- 00:29:27representation to not have to in the
- 00:29:30parlance of the modern era hold it down
- 00:29:32for white people because we as white
- 00:29:35folks know we don't have to do that we
- 00:29:36also know that what other white people
- 00:29:38do won't stick to us we have 19 men who
- 00:29:42happened to be Arab and Muslim who fly
- 00:29:44planes into buildings and we have
- 00:29:46otherwise rational human beings running
- 00:29:47around insisting that we should stop and
- 00:29:49search everyone like them at the airport
- 00:29:51we did not do this or anything even
- 00:29:53remotely like it when Tim McVeigh and
- 00:29:55Terry Nichols brought down the Murrah
- 00:29:56Building in Oklahoma City nor would we
- 00:29:58have we didn't do it when the Unabomber
- 00:30:02crazy-ass white man in the woods of
- 00:30:04Montana blowing people up for 20 years
- 00:30:10before they caught him it didn't stick
- 00:30:14to the rest of us who were white men the
- 00:30:17Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph puts a
- 00:30:20bomb in Olympic Village in Atlanta in 96
- 00:30:22blows up a gay bar blows up a family
- 00:30:24planning clinic he too then runs off to
- 00:30:26the woods as a side note I have no idea
- 00:30:29what it is about white people and the
- 00:30:31woods but whatever it is probably
- 00:30:46explains why black folks don't do a lot
- 00:30:47of camping
- 00:30:51[Applause]
- 00:30:59so it doesn't stick to us there have
- 00:31:02been over a hundred and twenty five
- 00:31:03family planning centers some of which
- 00:31:06provide abortion services many of which
- 00:31:08do not that have been bombed or burned
- 00:31:10in the last 20 years and every single
- 00:31:13one of them according to the FBI have
- 00:31:16been white they've mostly been men they
- 00:31:17claim to be Christian different lecture
- 00:31:19for a different night a hundred and
- 00:31:22twenty five or more 125 plus McVeigh and
- 00:31:25Nichols is 127 you know bombers 128 Eric
- 00:31:28Rudolph is 129 129 confirmed terrorists
- 00:31:33who are white in his country in the last
- 00:31:3420 years it sticks to nobody who's wiped
- 00:31:3619 an hour of Muslims and it sticks to
- 00:31:40everyone who is either 700 million Arab
- 00:31:43folk on the planet of billion 0.5
- 00:31:45Muslims on the planet to assume that we
- 00:31:48know something about them based on the
- 00:31:50acts of 19 is to commit what any
- 00:31:52statistician will tell you is sampling
- 00:31:53error it is mathematical illiteracy and
- 00:31:56yet we do it because we can privilege
- 00:32:02not having to worry about it but let me
- 00:32:04suggest to you something because the
- 00:32:05title of this talk after all is the
- 00:32:07pathology of privilege and I want to be
- 00:32:08very clear that that privilege of not
- 00:32:12thinking about it that privilege of not
- 00:32:14having to know someone else's reality
- 00:32:15that privilege of being able to ignore
- 00:32:18it and the privilege of benefiting from
- 00:32:20the inequality having a certain leg up
- 00:32:22actually is very dangerous and not just
- 00:32:25for those who don't have it that there
- 00:32:27is actually a downside for those who do
- 00:32:28and this is important right because in a
- 00:32:31country like ours which encourages us to
- 00:32:34take advantage of our advantages if I
- 00:32:36tell you that you have privilege your
- 00:32:37first inclination is not to try to get
- 00:32:39rid of that that's not the culture in
- 00:32:41which we live but I want to suggest you
- 00:32:43there are reasons why even those of us
- 00:32:45who benefit in relative terms from
- 00:32:47racism and institutional white supremacy
- 00:32:49should care about this not out of some
- 00:32:51altruistic I want to help other people
- 00:32:53impulse but because it is actually
- 00:32:55dangerous for us as well
- 00:32:57[Music]
- 00:33:02because if you know the history of the
- 00:33:04whole concept of lightness if you know
- 00:33:06the history of the whole concept of the
- 00:33:08white race where it came from and for
- 00:33:09what reason you know that it was a trick
- 00:33:12and it's worked brilliantly
- 00:33:15see prior to the mid to late 1600s in
- 00:33:18the colonies of what would become the
- 00:33:19United States there was no such thing as
- 00:33:20the white race those of us of European
- 00:33:22descent did not refer to ourselves by
- 00:33:24that term really ever before then in
- 00:33:27fact in the old countries of Europe we
- 00:33:30had spent most of our time killing each
- 00:33:31other we didn't love each other we
- 00:33:34weren't one big happy family the side of
- 00:33:36my family that comes from Scotland hell
- 00:33:37they didn't even worry about fighting
- 00:33:39people outside of Scotland Highlanders
- 00:33:40and lowlanders just fought the hell out
- 00:33:42of each other so there was no white race
- 00:33:45but in the colonies of what would become
- 00:33:47the United States what did we see in the
- 00:33:501660s 1670s we began to see that
- 00:33:54Africans of indentured servant status
- 00:33:56many of them not enslaved yet they were
- 00:33:59not necessarily permanently enslaved
- 00:34:01some were others were indentured like
- 00:34:03many poor Europeans for periods of 7 to
- 00:34:0511 years they could work off their
- 00:34:07indenture and then they would be free
- 00:34:09labour technically realised as did the
- 00:34:11white indentured servants the Europeans
- 00:34:13who hadn't even been called white yet
- 00:34:14that they had a lot of things in common
- 00:34:16like the fact that they were all getting
- 00:34:18their clock cleaned by the elite and so
- 00:34:21they would get together more than our
- 00:34:22history books taught us to ferment
- 00:34:25rebellion against the elite to try to
- 00:34:27get a better deal for themselves on the
- 00:34:28basis of economic necessity and economic
- 00:34:31justice and what did the elite do when
- 00:34:34you see that you're outnumbered by black
- 00:34:37and white folks who are penniless
- 00:34:40landless peasants you have to do one of
- 00:34:43two things you either have to kill them
- 00:34:44all but you can't do that because who's
- 00:34:45gonna work rich folks weren't going to
- 00:34:47they had to get poor people to work
- 00:34:50whole point was to be a person of
- 00:34:52leisure back in those days that was the
- 00:34:54goal was not to work so you couldn't
- 00:34:56kill them all you didn't want to kill
- 00:34:58them all you have to do the work
- 00:34:58yourself not to build your own levee
- 00:35:00build your own house no pick your own
- 00:35:03tobacco harvest your own cotton no we're
- 00:35:06not going to do any of that so you can't
- 00:35:09kill them but you can co-opt them and so
- 00:35:11the elite in Virginia for example in the
- 00:35:13colony begins to give certain carrots to
- 00:35:17people of European descent saying things
- 00:35:19like you know we're gonna let you own a
- 00:35:21little land not much but just a little
- 00:35:24and we're gonna get rid of indentured
- 00:35:25servitude now you're free labor and by
- 00:35:27the way once you're free labor you get
- 00:35:29fifty acres of land just because you're
- 00:35:31free labor see so we're gonna cut you in
- 00:35:33on this deal we're gonna let you enter
- 00:35:34into contracts we're gonna let you
- 00:35:36testify in court and here's the best of
- 00:35:37all we're gonna put you on the slave
- 00:35:39patrol to keep those people in line
- 00:35:42right the idea was you're still going to
- 00:35:44get your clock cleaned
- 00:35:45we still don't like you we still aren't
- 00:35:48gonna really empower you or change your
- 00:35:50economic subordination but we're gonna
- 00:35:51make you honorary members of this team
- 00:35:53and you're gonna help us keep those
- 00:35:54other people down and so they've got a
- 00:35:58little taste of power and it did
- 00:36:00effectively divide and conquer those
- 00:36:02coalition's those rebellions began to
- 00:36:03stop almost instantly fast-forward to
- 00:36:06the Civil War era
- 00:36:07you have rich white folks in the south
- 00:36:09where I come from standing up and openly
- 00:36:10admitting that the reason they're
- 00:36:12prepared to secede from the union and
- 00:36:13the only reason they ever articulated
- 00:36:16publicly ever was to maintain and extend
- 00:36:19slavery and white supremacy not only
- 00:36:21where it already existed but into the
- 00:36:23newly acquired that is to say stolen
- 00:36:25territories from Mexico to the West that
- 00:36:28was what they said now we lie about it
- 00:36:31we say it wasn't about slavery and it
- 00:36:33was about states rights yes the right of
- 00:36:35the states to keep and maintain slaves
- 00:36:36exactly but back then they had no shame
- 00:36:40so they didn't try and cover it up they
- 00:36:42openly said it but once again the rich
- 00:36:44didn't want to go do the work are you
- 00:36:45kidding oh they're gonna get poor people
- 00:36:48to go fight for them and the poor folks
- 00:36:50didn't even own slaves now think how do
- 00:36:52you get poor people who don't even own
- 00:36:53the shirt on their back let alone slaves
- 00:36:56to go fight to keep your slaves for you
- 00:36:58you've got to convince them that their
- 00:37:01skin is more important than their
- 00:37:03economic interest because think about it
- 00:37:05if I am a farmer who has to charge you a
- 00:37:08dollar a day or two dollars a week to
- 00:37:10work on your farm and harvest that
- 00:37:12tobacco or picked that cotton but you
- 00:37:14can get a black person to do it for free
- 00:37:16because you own them who's gonna get the
- 00:37:20job not me in other words slavery
- 00:37:23actually undermined the wages
- 00:37:25and the wage based the economic floor of
- 00:37:27the typical white working-class a
- 00:37:28low-income person but they were told if
- 00:37:32these people are freed they're gonna
- 00:37:33take your job no fool they got your job
- 00:37:35that's the point and so at some level
- 00:37:38again working-class white people being
- 00:37:40harmed by white privilege relatively
- 00:37:42being advantage right being given a leg
- 00:37:44up being given a membership to the club
- 00:37:46but in absolute terms being kept
- 00:37:48economically subordinated by the very
- 00:37:50thing that gave them a sense of
- 00:37:52superiority how's that for irony
- 00:37:54then in the present era this hasn't
- 00:37:56stopped this is not ancient history now
- 00:37:58we have people running around insisting
- 00:38:00that we should close the border with
- 00:38:01Mexico because if we don't the wages of
- 00:38:04working class people will continue to
- 00:38:06fall the implication being that the only
- 00:38:08reason workers are paid like crap in
- 00:38:10this country is because the border is
- 00:38:12open but if you believe that you would
- 00:38:15actually have to believe that if that
- 00:38:17border were closed and all these owners
- 00:38:18of capital and industry would just say
- 00:38:20oh well you'll figure this out here it's
- 00:38:23a raise
- 00:38:25do we really believe that the only thing
- 00:38:27keeping bosses from paying people more
- 00:38:29is the presence of low-wage medium semi
- 00:38:32skilled labor from south of this
- 00:38:34artificial border is that really what we
- 00:38:36believe we know that if that border is
- 00:38:38closed it isn't going to be close to
- 00:38:39capital it isn't going to be close to
- 00:38:42goods if you have a border that can be
- 00:38:45crossed by capital looking for the
- 00:38:47highest return on investment or goods
- 00:38:48looking for the highest price but labor
- 00:38:50is chained to its country of origin how
- 00:38:54is that going to work to the benefit of
- 00:38:56working people by definition it doesn't
- 00:38:58by definition it omits the working class
- 00:39:02divide and conquer but the best example
- 00:39:05of all perhaps in the contemporary era
- 00:39:06in the Greater New Orleans area after
- 00:39:08Katrina here you have two communities
- 00:39:10that were the most hard-hit Lower Ninth
- 00:39:13Ward mostly black community 94% African
- 00:39:17American about 40 percent official
- 00:39:20poverty rate heavy working-class
- 00:39:22community and right across the canal st.
- 00:39:25Bernard Parish Chalmette ninety-five
- 00:39:28percent white also working-class high
- 00:39:30levels of poverty economically very
- 00:39:32similar and at the end of the day in
- 00:39:35those first few days of September 2000
- 00:39:39more similar than they probably would
- 00:39:40have realized because when those levees
- 00:39:43broke they all got their stuff jacked
- 00:39:45they all got their stuff destroyed but
- 00:39:47if you had asked white folks in
- 00:39:49Chalmette and I've done it who was the
- 00:39:51cause of the problems in that Greater
- 00:39:53New Orleans area prior to that flooding
- 00:39:55they would have pointed across that
- 00:39:56canal at those black folks wouldn't have
- 00:39:58called them black folks and would have
- 00:40:00said there that's the problem 70% of the
- 00:40:02white folks in st. Bernard Parish voted
- 00:40:04for David Duke white supremists neo-nazi
- 00:40:06former head of the largest Ku Klux Klan
- 00:40:08group in the United States when he ran
- 00:40:10for governor in 1991 seven out of ten
- 00:40:12gladly voted for him because he was
- 00:40:14blaming black folks for all of their
- 00:40:16problems and they bought it
- 00:40:17what's the irony the irony is that while
- 00:40:20they were blaming black people for their
- 00:40:22problems while they were blaming black
- 00:40:25people for the conditions of the Greater
- 00:40:27New Orleans area in which they lived
- 00:40:28nobody was paying attention least of all
- 00:40:31the hey to the fact that these white
- 00:40:33elite politicians either in Baton Rouge
- 00:40:35or in Washington whose job it was to
- 00:40:38secure those levees to make sure that
- 00:40:39levee funds were spent in the proper way
- 00:40:41and that they were spent at all those
- 00:40:43mostly white and mostly elite
- 00:40:45politicians did nothing at the end of
- 00:40:47the day it wasn't just the black folks
- 00:40:48in the Lower Ninth Ward that headon care
- 00:40:50about they really couldn't have given a
- 00:40:51rat's ass about those poor and
- 00:40:53working-class white folks either and yet
- 00:40:56when the people of Chalmette people of
- 00:40:58st. Bernard Parish got back into session
- 00:40:59first time they had a City Council
- 00:41:01meeting parish council meeting after the
- 00:41:03flooding the lights aren't even on yet
- 00:41:05the water isn't even hooked up and the
- 00:41:07first order of business was to pass an
- 00:41:12ordinance saying that you couldn't rent
- 00:41:14property in st. Bernard Parish to anyone
- 00:41:16who wasn't a blood relative now I'll
- 00:41:19leave it to your imagination as to why
- 00:41:21you want to pass a law that law had
- 00:41:22never existed before but now that it's
- 00:41:24been emptied out and you don't know who
- 00:41:25might come back that's a damn good way
- 00:41:27to keep black people out isn't it
- 00:41:28because if you're 95% white to begin
- 00:41:30with if you pass an ordinance that says
- 00:41:31that that's a great you can't say no
- 00:41:34blacks need apply you can't say no
- 00:41:36blacks allowed but that was an ingenious
- 00:41:37way to get around the law now they got
- 00:41:39caught there was a lawsuit threatened
- 00:41:40and they got rid of the ordinance but my
- 00:41:42point in bringing it up is to say once
- 00:41:44again divide and conquer is working
- 00:41:45these white folks in Chalmette need to
- 00:41:47march across that canal and join hands
- 00:41:50with the black folks had been sitting
- 00:41:52there
- 00:41:52more than willing to work with them for
- 00:41:54an awful long time and march on baton
- 00:41:56rouge in march on DC and march on the
- 00:41:57corps of engineers and recognize their
- 00:41:59commonality of interest but the
- 00:42:01whiteness and the lure of whiteness has
- 00:42:03tricked these have nothing in their bank
- 00:42:07account white people into believing that
- 00:42:09they got more in common with the rich
- 00:42:10white folks on st. Charles Avenue that
- 00:42:12didn't lose anything in that flooding
- 00:42:14then they have in common with the black
- 00:42:16working-class folks who live about five
- 00:42:18hundred yards away that's what white
- 00:42:26privilege does to white folks but that's
- 00:42:27not all it also creates an intense
- 00:42:29anxiety like a mental dysfunction an
- 00:42:31emotional anxiety and distress if you're
- 00:42:36privileged after all if you're the top
- 00:42:37dog if you have all the advantage you're
- 00:42:39constantly afraid of who's gaining on
- 00:42:40you you're constantly afraid of who's
- 00:42:42coming to take what you have I've got to
- 00:42:44close the border they're coming to take
- 00:42:46our stuff we got to worry about
- 00:42:47terrorists they're coming to take our
- 00:42:48stuff we got to get them before they get
- 00:42:50us preventive war we got to stop them
- 00:42:53that's what privilege will do for you
- 00:42:55because those who have it are constantly
- 00:42:57anxious a study in June of 2004 in the
- 00:43:00Journal of the American Medical
- 00:43:01Association which received very little
- 00:43:03attention found that in the United
- 00:43:04States the rates of anxiety disorder
- 00:43:06depression and substance abuse related
- 00:43:09mental disorders are twice the global
- 00:43:10average five times the rate in Nigeria
- 00:43:14how is it that the most powerful and
- 00:43:17privileged people on earth can have so
- 00:43:20much more anxiety than people who live
- 00:43:24in war-torn areas civil war political
- 00:43:28corruption amazing problems often famine
- 00:43:30all kinds of hardships that for the most
- 00:43:33part we don't see at least in the same
- 00:43:34abundance let's say in the United States
- 00:43:37and yet it's here that the greatest
- 00:43:39level of anxiety I would suggest that
- 00:43:41the reason that happens is because it's
- 00:43:43the privilege that generates the anxiety
- 00:43:45it's that constant fear of keeping up
- 00:43:47and staying ahead that generates the
- 00:43:51anxiety the mentality of entitlement the
- 00:43:53mentality that says this is our world
- 00:43:55and we get to make the rules in this
- 00:43:57world and then we come to find out not
- 00:43:58so much we don't deal with setback very
- 00:44:02well those who are the dominant group
- 00:44:03and then when the real world intrudes on
- 00:44:06it's like a psychological come apart
- 00:44:08like a meltdown so when those people in
- 00:44:10Littleton Colorado had their school shot
- 00:44:12up at Columbine when the folks in Santee
- 00:44:16California Santana high school
- 00:44:17Springfield Oregon Thurston high school
- 00:44:19all of those nice white spaces which
- 00:44:23from the mid 90s to the early 2000
- 00:44:25seemed like at least once or twice a
- 00:44:27year there was another one of these mass
- 00:44:28school shootings and almost every single
- 00:44:30one of them committed by a white male of
- 00:44:33upper-middle class background in a place
- 00:44:36where everyone said this wasn't supposed
- 00:44:38to happen here because privilege allowed
- 00:44:41them to let down their guard to the
- 00:44:43dysfunction and pathology that they
- 00:44:45thought only existed over there so we
- 00:44:49don't notice that Dylan Klebold and Eric
- 00:44:51Harris are building 35 bombs in the
- 00:44:53basement because privilege means I don't
- 00:44:55have to know what my kids are doing I
- 00:44:57ain't seen in like a week I'm taking
- 00:44:58classes at Home Depot no kids of color
- 00:45:04could have gotten away with that 35
- 00:45:06bombs in what basement a B if folks have
- 00:45:13color roll up to the Ace Hardware
- 00:45:14looking for bomb supplies they are not
- 00:45:17going to be sold them but these white
- 00:45:20middle-class folks drive up in nice cars
- 00:45:22looking to get some pipe bomb materials
- 00:45:23some explosives some real short fuses
- 00:45:25and it's oh it's for a science fair
- 00:45:27experiment sure here you know all right
- 00:45:30privilege usually it works out pretty
- 00:45:33well 364 days out of the year it goes
- 00:45:36okay but if day 365 is April 20 at the
- 00:45:391999 and your kid goes to Columbine High
- 00:45:41School you really don't care much about
- 00:45:42the other 364 because when you have that
- 00:45:45privilege of living in that bubble and
- 00:45:47you don't have to think about what you
- 00:45:48don't have to think about remember there
- 00:45:50may come a time when you have to think
- 00:45:52about it when 9/11 happened notice the
- 00:45:57different ways that white folks and
- 00:45:59folks of color by and large reacted Oh
- 00:46:00everybody was scared everybody was angry
- 00:46:02everybody was upset everybody's freaking
- 00:46:04out but now there were only some folks
- 00:46:07who went in front of microphones and
- 00:46:10said the following and they were all
- 00:46:12white that I saw why do they hate us
- 00:46:17why why why would anyone hate the United
- 00:46:23States of America I don't get it
- 00:46:27see people of color they didn't say this
- 00:46:29and it's not because folks of color hate
- 00:46:32this country but folks of color have
- 00:46:33historically a love-hate relationship
- 00:46:37with the society loving certain things
- 00:46:39about it hating other things about it
- 00:46:41but here's the more important point to
- 00:46:42be a person of color in this country is
- 00:46:44to always have to know what the other
- 00:46:46guy thinks it is to always have to know
- 00:46:48what other people think about you
- 00:46:50because if you don't if you for one
- 00:46:52minute forget what other people might
- 00:46:54think about you your life is in danger
- 00:46:56but to be the dominant group is to have
- 00:46:59that luxury or to think you do to think
- 00:47:02you do of not having to care what other
- 00:47:04people think because you're the big dog
- 00:47:07you're the top you're the king of the
- 00:47:09hill you'll have to worry about what
- 00:47:10other people think that's privilege you
- 00:47:12don't have to know you can sort of laugh
- 00:47:13it off at least we thought we could we
- 00:47:15could have that attitude that says you
- 00:47:17know what are you gonna do to us we're
- 00:47:19big and bad we spend four hundred
- 00:47:22billion dollars a year on defense fool
- 00:47:24if you come for us we will bomb you back
- 00:47:27to the Stone Age and if you're already
- 00:47:29there we'll take you back to whatever
- 00:47:31the hell came before the Stone Age
- 00:47:33because we can and then 19 guys with 37
- 00:47:38dollars worth of box cutters $1,000
- 00:47:40worth of plane tickets and a pissy
- 00:47:41attitude pretty much said okay I'll tell
- 00:47:44you what you spend your four hundred
- 00:47:46billion dollars a year on defense and
- 00:47:48here's the deal me and my boys are
- 00:47:51bringing these buildings down anyway how
- 00:47:54do you like us now so privileged didn't
- 00:47:58allow us to see that the rest of the
- 00:48:00world doesn't view us the way we view us
- 00:48:03maybe we'd have been better off knowing
- 00:48:05that maybe we would have been better off
- 00:48:07for decades knowing that the rest of the
- 00:48:10world doesn't view us in the same
- 00:48:11Liberatore terms that we sometimes view
- 00:48:14ourselves now people of color in this
- 00:48:15country already knew better because when
- 00:48:18they asked white folks and black folks
- 00:48:19before the invasion of Iraq good idea
- 00:48:21bad idea
- 00:48:22the folks without privilege said mm-hmm
- 00:48:25black folks were just like overwhelming
- 00:48:28new
- 00:48:29knew they as white folks and two-thirds
- 00:48:34of white America said hell yes we must
- 00:48:36do this they're gonna greet us like
- 00:48:38liberators see that's privileged
- 00:48:40speaking privilege says that surely they
- 00:48:43know were liberated surely they know
- 00:48:45Rumsfeld said we're gonna be greeted
- 00:48:47like liberators Dick Cheney said it they
- 00:48:50know so much about combat surely this
- 00:48:52will work out well people of color know
- 00:48:57because folks of color know that even if
- 00:49:00you don't have very much folks without
- 00:49:01much will kill you for the little bit
- 00:49:03they have or you could invade Washington
- 00:49:06Heights tonight but I don't recommend it
- 00:49:08you could invade the South Bronx tonight
- 00:49:10but I do not recommend it because the
- 00:49:14folks who were there may know full well
- 00:49:16they don't have much but they will
- 00:49:19indeed kill you to keep what little bit
- 00:49:21they have and see victims have long
- 00:49:23memories and so the people we claim to
- 00:49:25be liberating don't forget that their
- 00:49:28oppression came at the hands of a man
- 00:49:30that we supported all of those years
- 00:49:32they don't forget that but those who
- 00:49:35create that victimization have short
- 00:49:36memories we have the luxury of
- 00:49:37forgetting so we go in because privilege
- 00:49:40says it'll work privilege says it'll
- 00:49:42work privilege says it will work and
- 00:49:44then we come to find out maybe it
- 00:49:47doesn't work as well as we thought and
- 00:49:48maybe we should have listened to the
- 00:49:50folks without privilege who know a
- 00:49:52little bit more about how oppressed
- 00:49:53people respond to invasion invasion
- 00:49:55doesn't bring liberation in black and
- 00:49:57brown folk know what they've been there
- 00:49:59they've done that but the privilege had
- 00:50:02this luxury and I remember three days
- 00:50:03into the war getting an email from a guy
- 00:50:05who was angry at me
- 00:50:06for having written some anti-war essays
- 00:50:08and 72 hours in he's writing me an email
- 00:50:11and he's saying see 72 hours into this
- 00:50:16is what what kind of channel surfing
- 00:50:18culture we are three days of war and
- 00:50:21we're winning so it's cool you know see
- 00:50:24and this is what he says he said see you
- 00:50:26dirty stinky no baths takin Birkenstock
- 00:50:28we're and hippie anarchist communist you
- 00:50:30were wrong
- 00:50:31I said really how do you know that we
- 00:50:36were wrong well because it's going look
- 00:50:38we're winning it's good they love us
- 00:50:41I said really how do you know that they
- 00:50:44love us and he said well I open the
- 00:50:47paper today and there was this great ap
- 00:50:49photograph right there on the front page
- 00:50:50of a little Iraqi kid giving the
- 00:50:53thumbs-up to the soldiers our soldiers
- 00:50:56see so they love us they are greeting us
- 00:51:00like liberators you all were wrong I
- 00:51:02said okay and I'll tell you I'll ask you
- 00:51:05what I asked him again a cultural
- 00:51:08competence quiz what do you think this
- 00:51:10means in Iraq do you know what this
- 00:51:15means
- 00:51:16throughout the so-called Middle East and
- 00:51:18much of North Africa Egypt up it does
- 00:51:21not mean keep up the good work I love
- 00:51:24what you do this instead is the
- 00:51:29functional equivalent of flipping you
- 00:51:31off so this five-year-old child is
- 00:51:37punking our entire nation
- 00:51:45but we don't know it because we don't
- 00:51:48have to know it but maybe we should have
- 00:51:50known it because now you see that five
- 00:51:53year old with the thumbs up and we say
- 00:51:54see it's working we got to do more of
- 00:51:56this and though I'm making light of it
- 00:52:00I'm doing it
- 00:52:00only because sometimes you have to laugh
- 00:52:02at the absurdity of this system so as
- 00:52:04not to cry there are thousands of
- 00:52:06parents in this country and hundreds of
- 00:52:09thousands in Iraq and in Afghanistan who
- 00:52:12are going to be burying have already
- 00:52:14buried their children and are gonna
- 00:52:16continue to bury their children this
- 00:52:17week and next week in the week after
- 00:52:19that and the month after that and the
- 00:52:20month after that and to hear the
- 00:52:22politicians in this country tell it for
- 00:52:24years they're gonna keep burying their
- 00:52:27kids because of this hubris because of
- 00:52:30this privileged mentality of entitlement
- 00:52:32that says the world is ours to shape in
- 00:52:35our image that we have the right to make
- 00:52:37it over and everyone else will bow
- 00:52:38before our superior firepower and the
- 00:52:41rest of the world has in case you have
- 00:52:42not noticed pretty much called
- 00:52:45on that so at some point we better worry
- 00:52:48about privilege not just because of what
- 00:52:49it does to the ones without it but what
- 00:52:51it does to us what it turns us into what
- 00:52:54it allows our policymakers to do an our
- 00:52:56name which is not actually in our
- 00:52:58interest we better understand that this
- 00:53:02is a system that is every bit as capable
- 00:53:04of hurting and killing us we are not the
- 00:53:06first targets no we are not the intended
- 00:53:08targets we are perhaps the collateral
- 00:53:11damage of this system but damage
- 00:53:14nonetheless and if we don't want that to
- 00:53:17continue if we want to be free of that
- 00:53:20risk that we ourselves are now placed in
- 00:53:23we have to care about it not as an act
- 00:53:26of altruism or paternalistic concern but
- 00:53:28as an act of self interest and self
- 00:53:30liberation and this is our job and this
- 00:53:33is our duty irrespective of our guilt
- 00:53:36[Music]
- 00:53:40see it is very important and I want to
- 00:53:43close with this before taking questions
- 00:53:44I want you to know that this has nothing
- 00:53:47to do with guilt I realized that none of
- 00:53:50the people in this room and none of the
- 00:53:52people in the other rooms to which I
- 00:53:54speak every single week in this country
- 00:53:56somewhere are the ones who themselves
- 00:53:59individually or even collectively are
- 00:54:01responsible for the creation of this
- 00:54:03system of inequality of privilege of
- 00:54:05oppression of marginalization and that
- 00:54:07is not the point I know we didn't create
- 00:54:10it but we are here now and we inherit
- 00:54:12the legacy of that which has come before
- 00:54:14if you were to become the chief
- 00:54:16executive officer of a company one day
- 00:54:18you would not be able to go in to that
- 00:54:20company and call your chief financial
- 00:54:22officer on the phone and say you know
- 00:54:25what I want to look at the books I want
- 00:54:27to know how much we have what our assets
- 00:54:29are what's our revenue stream you know I
- 00:54:31want to know all that because I want to
- 00:54:32take us to new and greater heights and
- 00:54:33so you asked the CFO to come in and give
- 00:54:36you the PowerPoint presentation the
- 00:54:37spreadsheets and she comes in with all
- 00:54:39of this technology and all of this data
- 00:54:41and gives you the presentation here's
- 00:54:43our assets here's our revenue stream
- 00:54:44here's our outstanding debt what do you
- 00:54:46think you wouldn't be able to look at
- 00:54:48that CFO and tell her you know I really
- 00:54:51like your presentation it's great to
- 00:54:53know we have all these assets and some
- 00:54:55really amazing income coming in but the
- 00:54:57next time I ask you to come and show me
- 00:54:59that don't bring me the debt material
- 00:55:01all that stuff about what we owe cuz he
- 00:55:03I wouldn't hear when y'all ran that up
- 00:55:05that was that other guy that was your
- 00:55:08last chief executive officer the debts
- 00:55:11of those older leaders those are on them
- 00:55:13have them pay him I'm gonna make use of
- 00:55:17the assets oh yes I'm gonna make use of
- 00:55:20the income oh oh yes but I'm not gonna
- 00:55:23pay the debts because they're not mine
- 00:55:24you couldn't do that you'd be ushered to
- 00:55:26your car by security but that's exactly
- 00:55:29what we do as a society isn't it we say
- 00:55:32the debts are not ours oh the glory is
- 00:55:35ours all the stuff that we've
- 00:55:38accumulated as a nation and as a people
- 00:55:40that's ours
- 00:55:41we don't mind living in the past as long
- 00:55:43as it glorifies us that's what history
- 00:55:47books do that's what July 4th is
- 00:55:50we just don't want to own up to the part
- 00:55:53that's less flattering because we feel
- 00:55:54guilty but it isn't about guilt it's
- 00:55:56about responsibility those two things
- 00:55:57are not synonymous if we don't know the
- 00:55:59difference we should look it up when we
- 00:56:02get tired of living in the funk in the
- 00:56:05residue of that which has been given to
- 00:56:06us by others with no regard for the
- 00:56:10impact and the damage that they would do
- 00:56:12to us and to our children and
- 00:56:14grandchildren and great-grandchildren if
- 00:56:16and when we are lucky enough to have
- 00:56:17them when we get tired of living in that
- 00:56:19residue in that funk and saying enough
- 00:56:21then we'll get busy cleaning it not
- 00:56:23because we created but because we're the
- 00:56:25only ones left to do the job and if we
- 00:56:28don't we will be back or our children
- 00:56:31and our grandchildren and our
- 00:56:32great-grandchildren will be back in
- 00:56:34rooms just like this one in generations
- 00:56:37to come but I assure you that if they
- 00:56:39inherit this legacy as we have inherited
- 00:56:41the stakes will be far greater the risk
- 00:56:44will be far greater and the odds of
- 00:56:46success and victory at creating justice
- 00:56:48and opportunity for all will be far more
- 00:56:50remote and so if we don't want to see
- 00:56:52that day comet is up to us to get busy
- 00:56:55it is up to us to take responsibility
- 00:56:57not because we are guilty but because we
- 00:57:00are here thank you very much and take
- 00:57:02care
