    about some of the examples that have led
  • 00:01:58
    to where we are right now. won't won't

    dig up a whole I won't go into every
  • 00:02:02
    single example because we'd be probably

    talking for about an hour about all the
  • 00:02:06
    uh questionable decisions that have been
  • 00:02:08
    made over the years. But what stands out
  • 00:02:10
    to me as sort of a if a turning point is
  • 00:02:14
    the right word, but a point where this
  • 00:02:15
    started to occur, this manipulation of
  • 00:02:18
    reviews most not most notably would have
  • 00:02:21
    been probably the RTX3080 release, which
  • 00:02:26
    really unnecessary I thought anyway
  • 00:02:27
    because that's a great product, but it
  • 00:02:29
    was sort of a baby step. Um, and we
  • 00:02:31
    don't really want to name too many names
  • 00:02:33
    here. In this example, um, Digital
  • 00:02:36
    Foundry were granted early access to
  • 00:02:38
    look at the RTX3080 and sort of a
  • 00:02:40
    preview review style. Uh, I think it was
  • 00:02:43
    a few days before the actual reviews
  • 00:02:45
    were set to go live, which they did. Um,
  • 00:02:48
    so in this particular example, it wasn't
  • 00:02:50
    terribly egregious, but it was still an
  • 00:02:53
    attempt to manipulate the initial
  • 00:02:56
    impressions of the product. So, in their
  • 00:02:58
    instance, they were only allowed to
  • 00:03:00
    benchmark at 4K uh comparing the RTX
  • 00:03:04
    3080 with the 2080. Now, this led to a
  • 00:03:07
    best case scenario showing typically
  • 00:03:10
    around an 80% performance uh uplift. I
  • 00:03:12
    think they saw about 77% on average,
  • 00:03:15
    which wasn't that much above what you do
  • 00:03:18
    see when comparing those two GPUs at 4K.
  • 00:03:20
    It's around the 70% mark across a wide
  • 00:03:23
    range of games. So, not miles off, but
  • 00:03:27
    at 1440p, the RTX 3080 wasn't nearly as
  • 00:03:30
    impressive relative to the 2080 for
  • 00:03:32
    numerous reasons, and that is still true
  • 00:03:35
    to this day. You were looking at just
  • 00:03:36
    shy of a 50% performance uplift on
  • 00:03:39
    average. So, if the initial impression
  • 00:03:41
    was you're looking, you know, let's say
  • 00:03:43
    48% uplift at 1440p, and that's probably
  • 00:03:46
    a resolution that most gamers were
  • 00:03:47
    focused on, that's a lot less exciting
  • 00:03:49
    than 80%. But again, it's not a horrible
  • 00:03:52
    example. It wasn't terribly misleading,
  • 00:03:55
    which is why I think most people were
  • 00:03:57
    happy with it and it didn't raise too
  • 00:03:59
    many eyebrows at the time. It it didn't
  • 00:04:02
    really need to be done. Odd choice and
  • 00:04:04
    it was very much using the strong
  • 00:04:06
    reputation that Digital Foundry has
  • 00:04:08
    built up over the years to, you know,
  • 00:04:11
    basically say exactly what Nvidia has
  • 00:04:13
    wanted to say through them. So, I wasn't
  • 00:04:15
    particularly happy with that coverage at
  • 00:04:17
    the time. Again, don't really want to
  • 00:04:19
    call Digital Foundry out on that. I
  • 00:04:21
    think looking back their content was
  • 00:04:22
    fine. Definitely showed a best case
  • 00:04:24
    scenario, but it wasn't miles difference
  • 00:04:27
    to what reality was. So, not a huge
  • 00:04:30
    problem there. And again, it just didn't
  • 00:04:31
    need to happen on Nvidia's side. Got
  • 00:04:33
    even weirder though, probably more just
  • 00:04:36
    well, I don't want to say justified, but
  • 00:04:38
    it it got weirder with the RTX3090.
  • 00:04:40
    That's where the whole 8K meme began.
  • 00:04:43
    And Mhm. again, they lent on the
  • 00:04:45
    reputation of multiple well-known, in a
  • 00:04:49
    lot of instances, trusted media outlets
  • 00:04:51
    to push the narrative that the RTX3090
  • 00:04:54
    was a product worth buying because it
  • 00:04:56
    was very future proof. It was going to
  • 00:04:58
    support 8K TVs and upcoming gaming
  • 00:05:00
    monitors and things like that and offer
  • 00:05:02
    an experience that you just couldn't get
  • 00:05:03
    on any other
  • 00:05:05
    GPU. Again, it turned out to be more of
  • 00:05:07
    the 8K meme. No one really bought that,
  • 00:05:09
    but they attempted to again manipulate
  • 00:05:13
    the the messaging there with sort of
  • 00:05:15
    early access to this 8K focused content.
  • 00:05:18
    So, we'll sort of fast forward. I think
  • 00:05:20
    we'll mostly skip the GeForce 40 series
  • 00:05:22
    and just jump pretty much to the present
  • 00:05:24
    so we don't drag this out too much. So,
  • 00:05:27
    with the release of the RTX 5070, again,
  • 00:05:31
    days before those reviews were set to go
  • 00:05:33
    live, we just out of nowhere saw a
  • 00:05:36
    series of previews pop up uh claiming,
  • 00:05:39
    you know, that it was an amazing gaming
  • 00:05:42
    experience and it offered huge
  • 00:05:44
    performance gains, you know, 5070 faster
  • 00:05:46
    than a 4090 type stuff. It was really
  • 00:05:49
    paring those Nvidia marketing talking
  • 00:05:51
    points. And that again was a couple of
  • 00:05:54
    days before the real independent reviews
  • 00:05:56
    were set to go live. Now unclear if this
  • 00:06:00
    content was paid for or not or it was
  • 00:06:02
    sort of throwing certain media outlets a
  • 00:06:04
    bone. If you if you play nice with us,
  • 00:06:06
    we'll shower you in views for the early
  • 00:06:09
    access content. So easy content to make
  • 00:06:11
    and good views. So I think we need to be
  • 00:06:14
    clear here what the difference is
  • 00:06:15
    between a review and a preview because
  • 00:06:17
    you might be wondering, you know, what
  • 00:06:19
    is the difference? If they've got early
  • 00:06:20
    access, surely they can just make
  • 00:06:22
    anything that they want to make in that
  • 00:06:24
    preview period. But really the
  • 00:06:26
    difference is with the reviews, the day
  • 00:06:28
    one reviews that we would cover, Gamers
  • 00:06:30
    Nexus, all the independent outlets,
  • 00:06:32
    there's no restrictions on what we can
  • 00:06:33
    talk about with the products at all. So
  • 00:06:35
    we can basically say anything we want to
  • 00:06:37
    say. We don't sign anything that says
  • 00:06:38
    that we have to cover certain things.
  • 00:06:40
    We're just giving our honest opinions uh
  • 00:06:42
    on the product and we're adhering to the
  • 00:06:44
    NDA so that everyone gets a fair go at
  • 00:06:46
    making their content at the same time.
  • 00:06:48
    So there's no rush to get content out
  • 00:06:50
    and that sort of thing. With previews
  • 00:06:51
    though, usually there is a document that
  • 00:06:54
    you sign and agree to to get that early
  • 00:06:56
    access ahead of the review date. So when
  • 00:06:58
    it comes to a preview, there might be,
  • 00:07:00
    you know, a number of dot points saying,
  • 00:07:01
    well, you have to test at this
  • 00:07:03
    resolution or you have to test these
  • 00:07:04
    games or you have to test these
  • 00:07:06
    configurations. And Nvidia will be very
  • 00:07:08
    specific about, you know, providing
  • 00:07:10
    certain configurations that are
  • 00:07:12
    favorable to the product that is being
  • 00:07:14
    tested. Which is why in the case of that
  • 00:07:16
    5070 content, there was a lot of focus
  • 00:07:18
    on configurations that you know wouldn't
  • 00:07:20
    exceed the VRAM buffer, were very
  • 00:07:21
    favorable with frame generation and that
  • 00:07:23
    sort of thing, which may not have been
  • 00:07:25
    the focus of the independent reviews
  • 00:07:26
    that you would have seen a couple of
  • 00:07:28
    days later. They almost always don't
  • 00:07:30
    include Radeon GPUs. So completely
  • 00:07:32
    ignores the competition, which that's
  • 00:07:34
    one of the main criterias of paid
  • 00:07:36
    content is no competing products. So we
  • 00:07:39
    just want to show people who have
  • 00:07:40
    invested in our products before a clear
  • 00:07:43
    path to upgrade. and so on and why you
  • 00:07:45
    should be incentivized to upgrade to
  • 00:07:47
    this new product we're releasing. In the
  • 00:07:49
    example of the RTX 5070, the friendly
  • 00:07:52
    media outlets that we're aware of that
  • 00:07:54
    made some coverage was Gamers Radar and
  • 00:07:57
    PC Gamer. Both of those were chosen. Uh
  • 00:08:01
    Gamers Radar, their title for their
  • 00:08:03
    content piece was, "I've been using the
  • 00:08:05
    RTX 5070 to play a bunch of games early
  • 00:08:08
    and it might be the console killing GPU
  • 00:08:10
    I've been waiting for." Kind of a
  • 00:08:12
    nothing title there, but it would have
  • 00:08:14
    been the testing that was a bit unusual.
  • 00:08:16
    A lot of multiframe generation on versus
  • 00:08:19
    off on previous generations showing very
  • 00:08:21
    skewed results. PC Gamer, their title
  • 00:08:25
    read, "Nvidia RTX 5070 hands-on preview.
  • 00:08:28
    A sneak peek at my unreleased RTX
  • 00:08:31
    Blackwell card hitting tripledigit frame
  • 00:08:33
    rates in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p and
  • 00:08:36
    avowed at 4K." And of course, they were

    again testing with multiframe generation
  • 00:08:40
    enabled on the Blackwell GPU, so the
  • 00:08:43
    GeForce 50 series GPU, the 5070, and
  • 00:08:46
    then, you know, no multiframe generation
  • 00:08:48
    on the previous generation that doesn't
  • 00:08:50
    support it. So, big old skewed graphs
  • 00:08:53
    with data that makes it seem like the
  • 00:08:55
    GeForce 50 series is a far more
  • 00:08:57
    significant upgrade than it really is.

    At least with those previews, you were
  • 00:09:01
    able to see independent review coverage
  • 00:09:03
    within a couple of days. like these
  • 00:09:04
    previews were released ahead of time,
  • 00:09:07
    but within a few days and still ahead of
  • 00:09:09
    the launch of the 5070, the actual
  • 00:09:11
    retail launch, you able to get the full
  • 00:09:13
    independent picture, which covered a
  • 00:09:15
    whole bunch of scenarios and wasn't just
  • 00:09:17
    the Nvidia games that they thought were
  • 00:09:19
    the most favorable scenario. So, as you
  • 00:09:21
    can sort of see, we've gone from the
  • 00:09:23
    3080 launch back in the day where, you
  • 00:09:25
    know, a couple of examples were used,
  • 00:09:27
    but were generally somewhat reflective
  • 00:09:30
    of the products to then with this
  • 00:09:33
    current generation, we got the 5070, bit
  • 00:09:35
    more of that sort of preview, misleading
  • 00:09:37
    numbers, frame generation to now what we
  • 00:09:40
    think is clearly the worst example we
  • 00:09:42
    have seen of this media manipulation,
  • 00:09:44
    the RTX 5060 in the previews that we
  • 00:09:47
    woke up to this morning. And again, like
  • 00:09:49
    the preview coverage was exactly the
  • 00:09:52
    same really as the 5070 and the
  • 00:09:53
    structure, the the examples that Nvidia
  • 00:09:56
    wanted people to use. So 1080p gaming
  • 00:09:58
    because the 5060 is supposed to be a
  • 00:10:00
    1080p card. Lots of multi-frame
  • 00:10:02
    generation examples and specifically,
  • 00:10:04
    you know, 4x frame gen on versus no
  • 00:10:07
    frame gen with 3060s and 2060s, for
  • 00:10:10
    example. We've seen some pretty
  • 00:10:11
    egregious charts that show highly
  • 00:10:13
    misleading inflated numbers there. And
  • 00:10:16
    so there's all of that. There's all of
  • 00:10:17
    that angle. You're getting a preview a
  • 00:10:19
    couple of days ahead of launch that has
  • 00:10:22
    misleading numbers. But this is
  • 00:10:24
    compounded by the fact that there's no
  • 00:10:26
    review program for the 5060. There's no
  • 00:10:29
    independent coverage of this product. At
  • 00:10:31
    least it's going to be enabled before
  • 00:10:33
    launch because we still as we sit here
  • 00:10:36
    today do not have driver access for the
  • 00:10:38
    5060. So with 5070 you got reviews. You
  • 00:10:42
    would have gotten reviews just before
  • 00:10:43
    launch. With the 5060 we do not have
  • 00:10:45
    driver access. And the only way to have
  • 00:10:47
    gotten driver access for the 5060 is to
  • 00:10:49
    opt in to this review program. Mhm.

    Yeah, that's right. So, in summary, the
  • 00:10:55
    way this story is developed is many
  • 00:10:57
    weeks ago now, uh, prior to the RTX 5060
  • 00:11:01
    Ti reviews, we had a private meeting
  • 00:11:03
    with Nvidia where essentially they were
  • 00:11:07
    tell they didn't tell us this, but
  • 00:11:08
    essentially they revealed that they were
  • 00:11:10
    uh bearing the 8 GB versions. So the
  • 00:11:12
    5060 Ti 8 GB and the 5060, no real
  • 00:11:16
    review program for
  • 00:11:17
    those. Don't worry about those. So we're
  • 00:11:20
    burying them without burying them. So
  • 00:11:22
    obviously we managed to get a 5060 Ti 8
  • 00:11:24
    GB. We've now provided content on that.
  • 00:11:27
    The 5060 they didn't really mention.
  • 00:11:29
    They were just said when that becomes
  • 00:11:31
    available in May, you guys can get your
  • 00:11:33
    hands on one and test it and you're free
  • 00:11:35
    to make your reviews. And when we

    pressed them a bit more on that, it

    seemed like there wasn't going well,

    there definitely wasn't a review

    program. It was unclear when we'd be

    able to get one, but they'll just appear

    on shelves and when they do, we can

    review one. So, not great. Then it that

    story evolved into we're now releasing

    it during the Computex trade show. So,

    while all the tech media is out trying
  • 00:11:58
    to cover the biggest tech trade show of

    the year, this card will appear on
  • 00:12:02
    shelves and you'll be able to buy it and
  • 00:12:05
    review it then. Except we're in
  • 00:12:06
    Compiteex. So in Taiwan attending

    Compiteex, so can't do that. And

    although we were able to get our hands

    on cards weeks ago, Nvidia were

    withholding the driver. So that means we

    couldn't get access to the required

    driver ahead of time to produce our
  • 00:12:22
    review before we came here to Taiwan. So

    it could go out on the 20th. So as a

    result, yeah, we're not going to have a

    review on the 20th. Uh and probably
  • 00:12:30
    won't have one shortly after, though. We
  • 00:12:32
    we're working on a few things there. So

    anyway, that's the situation. But as Tim

    said, making it even worse, now we have

    the previews, but the previews won't be

    followed by reviews. Uh except for the

    outlets that got the preview driver. So

    the more friendly media outlets that

    were uh basically agreed to doing these

    highly questionable previews are now

    able to provide reviews. So, probably

    not going to be the most critical RTX

    5060 reviews you're going to come

    across, but could be wrong on that one.

    But I'm sure some of them uh will be

    much more friendly than what you'd see

    from the likes of Gamers Nexus or us as

    an example. Yeah, there's really been no

    example in the history so far up until

    this point where Nvidia's made such a
  • 00:13:14
    concerted effort to bury what we think
  • 00:13:16
    is a very mainstream product. Like
  • 00:13:18
    there's certainly been products, more
  • 00:13:20
    niche examples like 3050 6 GB come to
  • 00:13:23
    mind more recently. 3080 12 GB as well
  • 00:13:27
    where they're just released onto the
  • 00:13:28
    market. There's not been much review
  • 00:13:30
    access or anything. They're just
  • 00:13:31
    released. You have to test it at some
  • 00:13:33
    point later. The 5060 though that is the
  • 00:13:36
    60 series card. It's not a ver we're not
  • 00:13:38
    talking about a version of the 5060
  • 00:13:40
    that's like a specific you know maybe
  • 00:13:43
    worse version downclocked or down you
  • 00:13:46
    know down configured version of the
  • 00:13:48
    card. This is the 5060 that lots of

    various reasons. October 2019 I had a

    private meeting with a few Nvidia

    representatives in Australia. They flew

    out from the US and again you know they

    made it known they weren't happy with

    our content what we were doing. We

    weren't including enough DLSS

    benchmarks. we weren't including enough

    rage tracing benchmarks, which you know

    I disagreed with because I thought we

    were showing the technologies uh really

    as they were for for gamers. Anyway,

    long story short, over an hour of trying

    to beat me down on these points and

    being unsuccessful, they essentially

    turned around and said, you know, how

    much can we pay you? So, they wanted us

    to make a DLSS content piece and include

    DLSS and reviews. They essentially said,

    you know, we we can sponsor you. You

    know, we we can help you guys out. uh

    yeah, we can throw money your way and do

    that. And I just flat out refused and

    said, "No, we don't take money from

    Nvidia, AMD, Intel." Uh they weren't

    happy with that. They seemed a bit
  • 00:23:21
    shocked that we were not, you know, we
  • 00:23:24
    turned down money that probably weren't
  • 00:23:26
    expecting that. And that was the end of
  • 00:23:28
    the conversation. And I think from that

    point, they didn't really see a way
  • 00:23:31
    forward with us. So it was about a year

    later that we were reviewing the GeForce
  • 00:23:37
    30 series. RTX 3060 Ti reviews were

    coming up and we'd heard nothing. No

    partners were really talking with us.

    talking with us said you need to talk to

    Nvidia. Shortly after we got the email,

    which a lot of you will be familiar

    with, the change your editorial

    direction email that uh created a huge

    controversy and quite baffling that that

    situation ever occurred. But basically,

    they couldn't pay us to do uh what they

    wanted us to do. So they attempted to

    remove us from the I guess the GeForce

    review program. So we're familiar with

    these tactics and and we're aware this

    has been going on for a long time. The

    reason why I didn't go film a video

    straight after our private meeting was

    because that you know it was a private

    meeting. The people I had the meeting

    with um are no longer at Nvidia. Most of

    them um the person that offered me the

    money is no longer with Nvidia. They've

    moved on. But it was a private meeting.

    obviously lots of reviewers have been

    talking about the multi-frame generation

    stuff and and all those sorts of things

    in a accurate way. So the fact that all

    that's happened, we keep bringing up

    like, oh, Nvidia is trying to bury 8 GB

    GPUs even though they're still making

    them. And then the next tactic after

    that is 5060 bury that, then do you know

    these previews? What are we going to be

    facing next generation? Like if Nvidia

    is not confident that reviews are going

    to be positive, which and I think that's

    a really key part of these discussions

    these products. They don't seem to
