- 00:00:05Welcome back to Hardware Unboxed. We're
- 00:00:07here in Taipei for Computex 2025. And
- 00:00:11well, we woke up this morning and we saw
- 00:00:13some pretty disappointing things
- 00:00:16occurring in the media relating to the
- 00:00:18GeForce RTX 5060, which as you all know
- 00:00:21is launching in the next couple of days.
- 00:00:23There's just been some odd preview
- 00:00:26coverage and that sort of thing. So, we
- 00:00:27wanted to get in front of the camera and
- 00:00:29just talk about, I guess, Nvidia's
- 00:00:31manipulation of the media when it comes
- 00:00:33to previews and review coverage. Why you
- 00:00:36shouldn't be using previews of the RTX
- 00:00:385060 to buy this specific GPU and why we
- 00:00:41strongly believe you should still wait
- 00:00:42for reviews, which is going to be
- 00:00:44difficult cuz, you know, we're here in
- 00:00:46in Taipei. We're going to talk a little
- 00:00:47bit about that. And, yeah, just this is
- 00:00:50a longunning situation that Nvidia has
- 00:00:52been implementing for a while now. So,
- 00:00:54we're going to give a little bit of a
- 00:00:55history into it and yeah, just really
- 00:00:57talk about how it relates to the RTX

- 00:01:48conductive and won't harden over time.
- 00:01:50So, for more information, please check
- 00:01:51the links in the video description.
- 00:01:53Yeah. So, I think we'll go back and talk
- 00:01:56about some of the examples that have led
- 00:01:58to where we are right now. won't won't
- 00:02:00dig up a whole I won't go into every
- 00:02:02single example because we'd be probably
- 00:02:04talking for about an hour about all the
- 00:02:06uh questionable decisions that have been
- 00:02:08made over the years. But what stands out
- 00:02:10to me as sort of a if a turning point is
- 00:02:14the right word, but a point where this
- 00:02:15started to occur, this manipulation of
- 00:02:18reviews most not most notably would have
- 00:02:21been probably the RTX3080 release, which
- 00:02:26really unnecessary I thought anyway
- 00:02:27because that's a great product, but it
- 00:02:29was sort of a baby step. Um, and we
- 00:02:31don't really want to name too many names
- 00:02:33here. In this example, um, Digital
- 00:02:36Foundry were granted early access to
- 00:02:38look at the RTX3080 and sort of a
- 00:02:40preview review style. Uh, I think it was
- 00:02:43a few days before the actual reviews
- 00:02:45were set to go live, which they did. Um,
- 00:02:48so in this particular example, it wasn't
- 00:02:50terribly egregious, but it was still an
- 00:02:53attempt to manipulate the initial
- 00:02:56impressions of the product. So, in their
- 00:02:58instance, they were only allowed to
- 00:03:00benchmark at 4K uh comparing the RTX
- 00:03:043080 with the 2080. Now, this led to a
- 00:03:07best case scenario showing typically
- 00:03:10around an 80% performance uh uplift. I
- 00:03:12think they saw about 77% on average,
- 00:03:15which wasn't that much above what you do
- 00:03:18see when comparing those two GPUs at 4K.
- 00:03:20It's around the 70% mark across a wide
- 00:03:23range of games. So, not miles off, but
- 00:03:27at 1440p, the RTX 3080 wasn't nearly as
- 00:03:30impressive relative to the 2080 for
- 00:03:32numerous reasons, and that is still true
- 00:03:35to this day. You were looking at just
- 00:03:36shy of a 50% performance uplift on
- 00:03:39average. So, if the initial impression
- 00:03:41was you're looking, you know, let's say
- 00:03:4348% uplift at 1440p, and that's probably
- 00:03:46a resolution that most gamers were
- 00:03:47focused on, that's a lot less exciting
- 00:03:49than 80%. But again, it's not a horrible
- 00:03:52example. It wasn't terribly misleading,
- 00:03:55which is why I think most people were
- 00:03:57happy with it and it didn't raise too
- 00:03:59many eyebrows at the time. It it didn't
- 00:04:02really need to be done. Odd choice and
- 00:04:04it was very much using the strong
- 00:04:06reputation that Digital Foundry has
- 00:04:08built up over the years to, you know,
- 00:04:11basically say exactly what Nvidia has
- 00:04:13wanted to say through them. So, I wasn't
- 00:04:15particularly happy with that coverage at
- 00:04:17the time. Again, don't really want to
- 00:04:19call Digital Foundry out on that. I
- 00:04:21think looking back their content was
- 00:04:22fine. Definitely showed a best case
- 00:04:24scenario, but it wasn't miles difference
- 00:04:27to what reality was. So, not a huge
- 00:04:30problem there. And again, it just didn't
- 00:04:31need to happen on Nvidia's side. Got
- 00:04:33even weirder though, probably more just
- 00:04:36well, I don't want to say justified, but
- 00:04:38it it got weirder with the RTX3090.
- 00:04:40That's where the whole 8K meme began.
- 00:04:43And Mhm. again, they lent on the
- 00:04:45reputation of multiple well-known, in a
- 00:04:49lot of instances, trusted media outlets
- 00:04:51to push the narrative that the RTX3090
- 00:04:54was a product worth buying because it
- 00:04:56was very future proof. It was going to
- 00:04:58support 8K TVs and upcoming gaming
- 00:05:00monitors and things like that and offer
- 00:05:02an experience that you just couldn't get
- 00:05:03on any other
- 00:05:05GPU. Again, it turned out to be more of
- 00:05:07the 8K meme. No one really bought that,
- 00:05:09but they attempted to again manipulate
- 00:05:13the the messaging there with sort of
- 00:05:15early access to this 8K focused content.
- 00:05:18So, we'll sort of fast forward. I think
- 00:05:20we'll mostly skip the GeForce 40 series
- 00:05:22and just jump pretty much to the present
- 00:05:24so we don't drag this out too much. So,
- 00:05:27with the release of the RTX 5070, again,
- 00:05:31days before those reviews were set to go
- 00:05:33live, we just out of nowhere saw a
- 00:05:36series of previews pop up uh claiming,
- 00:05:39you know, that it was an amazing gaming
- 00:05:42experience and it offered huge
- 00:05:44performance gains, you know, 5070 faster
- 00:05:46than a 4090 type stuff. It was really
- 00:05:49paring those Nvidia marketing talking
- 00:05:51points. And that again was a couple of
- 00:05:54days before the real independent reviews
- 00:05:56were set to go live. Now unclear if this
- 00:06:00content was paid for or not or it was
- 00:06:02sort of throwing certain media outlets a
- 00:06:04bone. If you if you play nice with us,
- 00:06:06we'll shower you in views for the early
- 00:06:09access content. So easy content to make
- 00:06:11and good views. So I think we need to be
- 00:06:14clear here what the difference is
- 00:06:15between a review and a preview because
- 00:06:17you might be wondering, you know, what
- 00:06:19is the difference? If they've got early
- 00:06:20access, surely they can just make
- 00:06:22anything that they want to make in that
- 00:06:24preview period. But really the
- 00:06:26difference is with the reviews, the day
- 00:06:28one reviews that we would cover, Gamers
- 00:06:30Nexus, all the independent outlets,
- 00:06:32there's no restrictions on what we can
- 00:06:33talk about with the products at all. So
- 00:06:35we can basically say anything we want to
- 00:06:37say. We don't sign anything that says
- 00:06:38that we have to cover certain things.
- 00:06:40We're just giving our honest opinions uh
- 00:06:42on the product and we're adhering to the
- 00:06:44NDA so that everyone gets a fair go at
- 00:06:46making their content at the same time.
- 00:06:48So there's no rush to get content out
- 00:06:50and that sort of thing. With previews
- 00:06:51though, usually there is a document that
- 00:06:54you sign and agree to to get that early
- 00:06:56access ahead of the review date. So when
- 00:06:58it comes to a preview, there might be,
- 00:07:00you know, a number of dot points saying,
- 00:07:01well, you have to test at this
- 00:07:03resolution or you have to test these
- 00:07:04games or you have to test these
- 00:07:06configurations. And Nvidia will be very
- 00:07:08specific about, you know, providing
- 00:07:10certain configurations that are
- 00:07:12favorable to the product that is being
- 00:07:14tested. Which is why in the case of that
- 00:07:165070 content, there was a lot of focus
- 00:07:18on configurations that you know wouldn't
- 00:07:20exceed the VRAM buffer, were very
- 00:07:21favorable with frame generation and that
- 00:07:23sort of thing, which may not have been
- 00:07:25the focus of the independent reviews
- 00:07:26that you would have seen a couple of
- 00:07:28days later. They almost always don't
- 00:07:30include Radeon GPUs. So completely
- 00:07:32ignores the competition, which that's
- 00:07:34one of the main criterias of paid
- 00:07:36content is no competing products. So we
- 00:07:39just want to show people who have
- 00:07:40invested in our products before a clear
- 00:07:43path to upgrade. and so on and why you
- 00:07:45should be incentivized to upgrade to
- 00:07:47this new product we're releasing. In the
- 00:07:49example of the RTX 5070, the friendly
- 00:07:52media outlets that we're aware of that
- 00:07:54made some coverage was Gamers Radar and
- 00:07:57PC Gamer. Both of those were chosen. Uh
- 00:08:01Gamers Radar, their title for their
- 00:08:03content piece was, "I've been using the
- 00:08:05RTX 5070 to play a bunch of games early
- 00:08:08and it might be the console killing GPU
- 00:08:10I've been waiting for." Kind of a
- 00:08:12nothing title there, but it would have
- 00:08:14been the testing that was a bit unusual.
- 00:08:16A lot of multiframe generation on versus
- 00:08:19off on previous generations showing very
- 00:08:21skewed results. PC Gamer, their title
- 00:08:25read, "Nvidia RTX 5070 hands-on preview.
- 00:08:28A sneak peek at my unreleased RTX
- 00:08:31Blackwell card hitting tripledigit frame
- 00:08:33rates in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p and
- 00:08:36avowed at 4K." And of course, they were
- 00:08:38again testing with multiframe generation
- 00:08:40enabled on the Blackwell GPU, so the
- 00:08:43GeForce 50 series GPU, the 5070, and
- 00:08:46then, you know, no multiframe generation
- 00:08:48on the previous generation that doesn't
- 00:08:50support it. So, big old skewed graphs
- 00:08:53with data that makes it seem like the
- 00:08:55GeForce 50 series is a far more
- 00:08:57significant upgrade than it really is.
- 00:08:59At least with those previews, you were
- 00:09:01able to see independent review coverage
- 00:09:03within a couple of days. like these
- 00:09:04previews were released ahead of time,
- 00:09:07but within a few days and still ahead of
- 00:09:09the launch of the 5070, the actual
- 00:09:11retail launch, you able to get the full
- 00:09:13independent picture, which covered a
- 00:09:15whole bunch of scenarios and wasn't just
- 00:09:17the Nvidia games that they thought were
- 00:09:19the most favorable scenario. So, as you
- 00:09:21can sort of see, we've gone from the
- 00:09:233080 launch back in the day where, you
- 00:09:25know, a couple of examples were used,
- 00:09:27but were generally somewhat reflective
- 00:09:30of the products to then with this
- 00:09:33current generation, we got the 5070, bit
- 00:09:35more of that sort of preview, misleading
- 00:09:37numbers, frame generation to now what we
- 00:09:40think is clearly the worst example we
- 00:09:42have seen of this media manipulation,
- 00:09:44the RTX 5060 in the previews that we
- 00:09:47woke up to this morning. And again, like
- 00:09:49the preview coverage was exactly the
- 00:09:52same really as the 5070 and the
- 00:09:53structure, the the examples that Nvidia
- 00:09:56wanted people to use. So 1080p gaming
- 00:09:58because the 5060 is supposed to be a
- 00:10:001080p card. Lots of multi-frame
- 00:10:02generation examples and specifically,
- 00:10:04you know, 4x frame gen on versus no
- 00:10:07frame gen with 3060s and 2060s, for
- 00:10:10example. We've seen some pretty
- 00:10:11egregious charts that show highly
- 00:10:13misleading inflated numbers there. And
- 00:10:16so there's all of that. There's all of
- 00:10:17that angle. You're getting a preview a
- 00:10:19couple of days ahead of launch that has
- 00:10:22misleading numbers. But this is
- 00:10:24compounded by the fact that there's no
- 00:10:26review program for the 5060. There's no
- 00:10:29independent coverage of this product. At
- 00:10:31least it's going to be enabled before
- 00:10:33launch because we still as we sit here
- 00:10:36today do not have driver access for the
- 00:10:385060. So with 5070 you got reviews. You
- 00:10:42would have gotten reviews just before
- 00:10:43launch. With the 5060 we do not have
- 00:10:45driver access. And the only way to have
- 00:10:47gotten driver access for the 5060 is to
- 00:10:49opt in to this review program. Mhm.
- 00:10:52Yeah, that's right. So, in summary, the
- 00:10:55way this story is developed is many
- 00:10:57weeks ago now, uh, prior to the RTX 5060
- 00:11:01Ti reviews, we had a private meeting
- 00:11:03with Nvidia where essentially they were
- 00:11:07tell they didn't tell us this, but
- 00:11:08essentially they revealed that they were
- 00:11:10uh bearing the 8 GB versions. So the
- 00:11:125060 Ti 8 GB and the 5060, no real
- 00:11:16review program for
- 00:11:17those. Don't worry about those. So we're
- 00:11:20burying them without burying them. So
- 00:11:22obviously we managed to get a 5060 Ti 8
- 00:11:24GB. We've now provided content on that.
- 00:11:27The 5060 they didn't really mention.
- 00:11:29They were just said when that becomes
- 00:11:31available in May, you guys can get your
- 00:11:33hands on one and test it and you're free
- 00:11:35to make your reviews. And when we
- 00:11:37pressed them a bit more on that, it
- 00:11:39seemed like there wasn't going well,
- 00:11:41there definitely wasn't a review
- 00:11:42program. It was unclear when we'd be
- 00:11:43able to get one, but they'll just appear
- 00:11:45on shelves and when they do, we can
- 00:11:48review one. So, not great. Then it that
- 00:11:51story evolved into we're now releasing
- 00:11:53it during the Computex trade show. So,
- 00:11:56while all the tech media is out trying
- 00:11:58to cover the biggest tech trade show of
- 00:12:00the year, this card will appear on
- 00:12:02shelves and you'll be able to buy it and
- 00:12:05review it then. Except we're in
- 00:12:06Compiteex. So in Taiwan attending
- 00:12:08Compiteex, so can't do that. And
- 00:12:11although we were able to get our hands
- 00:12:13on cards weeks ago, Nvidia were
- 00:12:16withholding the driver. So that means we
- 00:12:18couldn't get access to the required
- 00:12:20driver ahead of time to produce our
- 00:12:22review before we came here to Taiwan. So
- 00:12:24it could go out on the 20th. So as a
- 00:12:26result, yeah, we're not going to have a
- 00:12:28review on the 20th. Uh and probably
- 00:12:30won't have one shortly after, though. We
- 00:12:32we're working on a few things there. So
- 00:12:34anyway, that's the situation. But as Tim
- 00:12:36said, making it even worse, now we have
- 00:12:38the previews, but the previews won't be
- 00:12:40followed by reviews. Uh except for the
- 00:12:43outlets that got the preview driver. So
- 00:12:45the more friendly media outlets that
- 00:12:49were uh basically agreed to doing these
- 00:12:51highly questionable previews are now
- 00:12:53able to provide reviews. So, probably
- 00:12:55not going to be the most critical RTX
- 00:12:585060 reviews you're going to come
- 00:13:00across, but could be wrong on that one.
- 00:13:01But I'm sure some of them uh will be
- 00:13:04much more friendly than what you'd see
- 00:13:06from the likes of Gamers Nexus or us as
- 00:13:08an example. Yeah, there's really been no
- 00:13:10example in the history so far up until
- 00:13:12this point where Nvidia's made such a
- 00:13:14concerted effort to bury what we think
- 00:13:16is a very mainstream product. Like
- 00:13:18there's certainly been products, more
- 00:13:20niche examples like 3050 6 GB come to
- 00:13:23mind more recently. 3080 12 GB as well
- 00:13:27where they're just released onto the
- 00:13:28market. There's not been much review
- 00:13:30access or anything. They're just
- 00:13:31released. You have to test it at some
- 00:13:33point later. The 5060 though that is the
- 00:13:3660 series card. It's not a ver we're not
- 00:13:38talking about a version of the 5060
- 00:13:40that's like a specific you know maybe
- 00:13:43worse version downclocked or down you
- 00:13:46know down configured version of the
- 00:13:48card. This is the 5060 that lots of
- 00:13:50people will be buying. And so to go
- 00:13:52through with a preview program which
- 00:13:55again it kind of establishes content on
- 00:13:58the internet that if you search for the
- 00:13:595060 the first things that will be
- 00:14:01coming up around the time you're buying
- 00:14:02the cards are going to be the preview
- 00:14:05content and then the first trickling out
- 00:14:07of those reviews as you were saying from
- 00:14:08the the outlets that did previews and
- 00:14:10then later down the line content from us
- 00:14:12Gamers Nexus and the usual people. So
- 00:14:15some important details for these
- 00:14:16previews that you guys are seeing. they
- 00:14:18had to agree to quite strict guidelines
- 00:14:21in order to receive the driver and they
- 00:14:24had to create this preview content. So,
- 00:14:26it wasn't like, oh yeah, send us the
- 00:14:27driver, we might do something with it,
- 00:14:29and then you're able to make the review.
- 00:14:31You really had to agree to these terms
- 00:14:32and conditions with Nvidia. So, that's
- 00:14:35what's happened here. And we have
- 00:14:37there's a half a dozen or so media
- 00:14:40outlets that have agreed to this that
- 00:14:41we've seen previews from so far. So,
- 00:14:43GameStar, Games Radar, Tom's Guide,
- 00:14:46JVTech, and ASI 2, which I believe is a
- 00:14:50Japanese
- 00:14:51publication. So, the guidelines state,
- 00:14:54as far as we can tell, that it can only
- 00:14:57be compared, so this is the RTX 5060 can
- 00:15:00only be compared with the RTX 3060 and
- 00:15:03the 2060 Super. Now, I did see one
- 00:15:05comparison out of one of these that did
- 00:15:07look at the RTX 4060, so I'm not 100%
- 00:15:10sure whether they broke the guidelines
- 00:15:12or or what, but in any case, they
- 00:15:15weren't allowed to compare with Radeon
- 00:15:17GPUs or anything like that. And they
- 00:15:19really did go out of their way to
- 00:15:21handpick the cards that would probably
- 00:15:23make the 5060, well, certainly the the
- 00:15:26testing makes the 5060 look better than
- 00:15:28it was, but they're trying to target
- 00:15:29people obviously with these older cards
- 00:15:32and entice them into upgrading. That's
- 00:15:34being generous. I think the clear reason
- 00:15:35is the 3060 and 2060 Super do not
- 00:15:38support frame generation of any kind.
- 00:15:40So, they're clearly trying to show well
- 00:15:434x frame gen, 4x multi frame gen that
- 00:15:46the 5060 supports compared to no frame
- 00:15:48generation. And if you include the 4060,
- 00:15:50you have at least single frame
- 00:15:52generation. So, by specifically
- 00:15:54including 3060 versus 5060, you're
- 00:15:57getting the largest difference between
- 00:15:59generations enabled by multiframe
- 00:16:02generation FPS output, which is what the
- 00:16:04graphs from these media outlets show.
- 00:16:06They're showing you three times more
- 00:16:08performance out of a 5060 or or more
- 00:16:10than that, which is crazy. So, but
- 00:16:12again, that's as Tim pointed out, frame
- 00:16:14generation, which I was about to get to.
- 00:16:17So, the the well, I'll go to the games
- 00:16:19tested first. So, the games tested are
- 00:16:21Avowed, Doom: The Dark Ages, Marvel
- 00:16:23Rivals, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts
- 00:16:26Legacy. I don't think there's anything
- 00:16:27too crazy. Of course, Cyber Punk's in
- 00:16:28there, but the games tested fine,
- 00:16:31whatever. I mean, they're all perfectly
- 00:16:33fine games to include, especially when
- 00:16:34you're only comparing GeForce GPUs with
- 00:16:36GeForce GPUs. Don't really have too much
- 00:16:38of a problem with the games list. I
- 00:16:40mean, probably not wrapped that there's
- 00:16:42a games list to begin with and you can't
- 00:16:44just test it however you'd like to, but
- 00:16:47it's the settings that are the big
- 00:16:49problem here. So, 8 GB GPU and therefore
- 00:16:53the testing has been limited to 1080p.
- 00:16:55Ultra settings though, which is an
- 00:16:57interesting choice, but with DLSS
- 00:16:59quality upscaling. So, you're at 1080p
- 00:17:02with quality upscaling. And then if
- 00:17:04there's ray tracing, ray reconstruction,
- 00:17:06or path tracing, that's to be turned on
- 00:17:08when available. Uh, and then of course
- 00:17:10multiframe generation. So you could end
- 00:17:13up with a scenario where the 5060 is
- 00:17:16only capable of about 20 frames per
- 00:17:18second, maybe 30 frames per second, but
- 00:17:20because using multi-frame generation,
- 00:17:22the performance looks very good and the
- 00:17:24other GPUs will be pretty well unusable.
- 00:17:26So again, as Tim said, it's I said it
- 00:17:29incentivizes you to upgrade, but it it
- 00:17:32just shows extremely skewed data that is
- 00:17:34in no way realistic or representative of
- 00:17:37real world performance. It's really just
- 00:17:38to break benchmark graphs. So, that's
- 00:17:41the goal there. And really, they're
- 00:17:43trying to work out how to get their own
- 00:17:45marketing slides into mainstream media.
- 00:17:47So, there's been a big push. Uh, we've
- 00:17:50been targeted with it in the past to
- 00:17:52test with DLSS stuff like frame
- 00:17:54generation enabled and it's an attempt
- 00:17:56to legitimize the misleading marketing.
- 00:17:58They they again they're going and using
- 00:18:01the reputation that these sites have in
- 00:18:02terms of producing independent testing
- 00:18:04and saying well we want you to
- 00:18:07essentially copy the marketing and put
- 00:18:09it into a different format that makes it
- 00:18:11look like you've come to that as an
- 00:18:13independent conclusion which isn't
- 00:18:15necessarily the case because again there
- 00:18:16are guidelines that would be listing
- 00:18:17these testing configurations. In summary
- 00:18:20there or our opinion on this is the
- 00:18:22previews are very bad should not be done
- 00:18:24under any circumstances. There's really
- 00:18:26no justification for any of these media
- 00:18:29outlets doing these previews. You should
- 00:18:32never create content following any
- 00:18:35company's guidelines, especially when
- 00:18:36there's strict guidelines like that. So,
- 00:18:39it's just it's damaging. Shouldn't be
- 00:18:41done. Very poor practice. And there's
- 00:18:43really no defending it.
- 00:18:45Uh yeah, I think that's fair to say you
- 00:18:47agree with that. Yeah. You just it's
- 00:18:49bad. You're becoming the marketing arm
- 00:18:51of the of the company. It's even if it's
- 00:18:53not a paid for piece, it's effectively
- 00:18:56spawn, like sponsored content. Well,
- 00:18:58they're getting paid in one way or
- 00:18:59another. So, why would you take such a
- 00:19:02deal? Well, you get views. You get easy
- 00:19:05views. Views is money. So, if you're a
- 00:19:08struggling site or, you know, need to
- 00:19:10pay the bills, uh, taking that kind of
- 00:19:12deal might seem like a good idea. It
- 00:19:14definitely isn't. Should definitely not
- 00:19:15do it. But that's how it boils down to
- 00:19:18money is views. That's the currency
- 00:19:19there. also not paying off Nvidia
- 00:19:23probably something that a lot of these
- 00:19:25you
- 00:19:26know media outlets don't want to do
- 00:19:28because it risks you know views so they
- 00:19:31get they don't get review samples they
- 00:19:33can't cover the products they don't get
- 00:19:35included in early access so for example
- 00:19:36Nvidia never approached us about uh
- 00:19:40doing an early preview on the RTX 5060
- 00:19:42because they will know our answer on
- 00:19:44that one so they didn't even bother
- 00:19:45approaching us but there are other media
- 00:19:47outlets that yeah are friendlier and
- 00:19:49will do that sort of stuff, but they
- 00:19:50should definitely not do it. Well, yeah,
- 00:19:53it's it's also, you know, sites of our
- 00:19:55size, Hardware Unbox, Gamers Nexus, you
- 00:19:57know, Lionus, there's many different
- 00:19:59ways that we can get review GPUs and
- 00:20:02cards, and we have many contacts in the
- 00:20:04industry, and we're well established.
- 00:20:05So, it's much harder to prevent us from
- 00:20:08doing a review. Whereas one of the
- 00:20:10things we've been really concerned about
- 00:20:11with this in the past has been the
- 00:20:12impact it has on smaller channels where
- 00:20:15they're more reliant on Nvidia directly
- 00:20:18providing the GPUs and hardware that
- 00:20:20they test. And it's not just to be
- 00:20:22included in the day one reviews. It's
- 00:20:24actually to get the product. So we can
- 00:20:25afford to buy RTX5090s if we need to or
- 00:20:28whatever. Um you know again Gamers
- 00:20:30Nexus, same sort of position. But if
- 00:20:32you're just starting out, you don't have
- 00:20:34those kind of budgets. You can't just go
- 00:20:35buy an RTX 5090 and then an RTX 5080 and
- 00:20:38then a 5072i. You're talking about tens
- 00:20:40of thousands of dollars in most
- 00:20:42currencies just to review a product
- 00:20:44line. But we can do that, which is sort
- 00:20:47of the Nvidia knows this and they use
- 00:20:49this information to push out previews to
- 00:20:52these specific outlets and things
- 00:20:54knowing that they might have a better
- 00:20:56chance of running the marketing angles
- 00:20:58on those channels as opposed to a larger
- 00:21:01channel where we've got more options.
- 00:21:02And that's just really toxic. So I I
- 00:21:04just it's very disappointing to see.
- 00:21:06Like I don't like smaller channels being
- 00:21:09put into that position. Like Well, we
- 00:21:12were a smaller channel put in that
- 00:21:14position. Yeah. It's a it's a poor
- 00:21:16position to be put into where you're
- 00:21:17sort of tossing up, do I do this
- 00:21:18potentially dodgy content, or do I lose
- 00:21:20out on my revenue stream, my livelihood
- 00:21:23because I don't have the cards that I
- 00:21:24need to do my job. It's it's not good.
- 00:21:27Yeah. Yeah. Well, early on in the
- 00:21:29creation of our channel, we decided we
- 00:21:30weren't going to work directly in terms
- 00:21:32of sponsorships. So, receive money from
- 00:21:34AMD, Intel, or Nvidia. The core of our
- 00:21:38content was going to be focused around
- 00:21:39those three companies. So, we just
- 00:21:41thought, don't deal with them at all
- 00:21:43directly. So, they have nothing over us
- 00:21:45and they can't manipulate us in any way.
- 00:21:46That was a decision decision we made
- 00:21:48very early on. And of course, we've
- 00:21:50stuck to that. Uh, and the channel was
- 00:21:53much smaller back in it was 2019.
- 00:21:58So, the initial RTX release, you know,
- 00:22:01we covered DLSS, Tim found it wasn't
- 00:22:03very good. Um, said so. The initial ray
- 00:22:07tracing promise, not very good. Didn't
- 00:22:09live up to it. We said so. We weren't
- 00:22:11just repeating Nvidia's marketing
- 00:22:14saying, you know, you want your games to
- 00:22:15be ray traced, you want this, you want
- 00:22:16that. You know, these cards are amazing.
- 00:22:18We were like, well, the value is not
- 00:22:19really here at this point in time.
- 00:22:21Nvidia made it clear to us they were
- 00:22:23very unhappy with that opinion and that
- 00:22:25content and they wanted to change our
- 00:22:27opinion on that. Something we haven't
- 00:22:28talked about on the main channel for
- 00:22:29various reasons. October 2019 I had a
- 00:22:33private meeting with a few Nvidia
- 00:22:34representatives in Australia. They flew
- 00:22:36out from the US and again you know they
- 00:22:39made it known they weren't happy with
- 00:22:40our content what we were doing. We
- 00:22:42weren't including enough DLSS
- 00:22:43benchmarks. we weren't including enough
- 00:22:44rage tracing benchmarks, which you know
- 00:22:47I disagreed with because I thought we
- 00:22:49were showing the technologies uh really
- 00:22:52as they were for for gamers. Anyway,
- 00:22:55long story short, over an hour of trying
- 00:22:57to beat me down on these points and
- 00:22:59being unsuccessful, they essentially
- 00:23:00turned around and said, you know, how
- 00:23:02much can we pay you? So, they wanted us
- 00:23:04to make a DLSS content piece and include
- 00:23:06DLSS and reviews. They essentially said,
- 00:23:08you know, we we can sponsor you. You
- 00:23:09know, we we can help you guys out. uh
- 00:23:12yeah, we can throw money your way and do
- 00:23:14that. And I just flat out refused and
- 00:23:15said, "No, we don't take money from
- 00:23:17Nvidia, AMD, Intel." Uh they weren't
- 00:23:19happy with that. They seemed a bit
- 00:23:21shocked that we were not, you know, we
- 00:23:24turned down money that probably weren't
- 00:23:26expecting that. And that was the end of
- 00:23:28the conversation. And I think from that
- 00:23:30point, they didn't really see a way
- 00:23:31forward with us. So it was about a year
- 00:23:34later that we were reviewing the GeForce
- 00:23:3730 series. RTX 3060 Ti reviews were
- 00:23:40coming up and we'd heard nothing. No
- 00:23:42partners were really talking with us.
- 00:23:45Um, anyone any partners that were
- 00:23:47talking with us said you need to talk to
- 00:23:48Nvidia. Shortly after we got the email,
- 00:23:51which a lot of you will be familiar
- 00:23:53with, the change your editorial
- 00:23:54direction email that uh created a huge
- 00:23:58controversy and quite baffling that that
- 00:24:01situation ever occurred. But basically,
- 00:24:04they couldn't pay us to do uh what they
- 00:24:06wanted us to do. So they attempted to
- 00:24:08remove us from the I guess the GeForce
- 00:24:10review program. So we're familiar with
- 00:24:12these tactics and and we're aware this
- 00:24:14has been going on for a long time. The
- 00:24:16reason why I didn't go film a video
- 00:24:19straight after our private meeting was
- 00:24:20because that you know it was a private
- 00:24:21meeting. The people I had the meeting
- 00:24:23with um are no longer at Nvidia. Most of
- 00:24:26them um the person that offered me the
- 00:24:28money is no longer with Nvidia. They've
- 00:24:30moved on. But it was a private meeting.
- 00:24:33there was no evidence that this really
- 00:24:34took place and therefore it wasn't
- 00:24:36really worth making a content piece. I
- 00:24:38think we discussed it on our private
- 00:24:39Patreon live stream and stuff like that.
- 00:24:41We're a bit more transparent there. Then
- 00:24:43we've seen you know how the tactics
- 00:24:45change and and they are definitely doing
- 00:24:48these sort of tactics actively right now
- 00:24:50to other media. They're trying to
- 00:24:52strongarm them into these multiframe
- 00:24:54generation graphs and stuff like that.
- 00:24:55We're aware that's going on. Uh they
- 00:24:58haven't done that with us. um they
- 00:24:59generally just provide us with the
- 00:25:00samples at this point in time and leave
- 00:25:02us alone. So, which we appreciate.
- 00:25:04That's great. But what we don't
- 00:25:06appreciate is managing to source
- 00:25:08products like an RTX 5060 weeks in
- 00:25:11advance. And we have plenty of time to
- 00:25:13provide you guys with an independent
- 00:25:15review, showing you how the car
- 00:25:16performs, it strengths and weaknesses,
- 00:25:18and them actively barring us from doing
- 00:25:20so. And then, to add insult to injury,
- 00:25:22they're doing these really dodgy
- 00:25:24previews. And then the people who do the
- 00:25:26really dodgy previews are then rewarded
- 00:25:28with the only people that are allowed to
- 00:25:29provide a review. So that's very bad
- 00:25:32situation. Yeah, that's right. And so
- 00:25:35ultimately I think our conclusion is
- 00:25:37very very simple on this one. Don't buy
- 00:25:39the RTX 5060 at this point. Don't buy it
- 00:25:43until there are proper independent
- 00:25:45reviews produced from this card. And
- 00:25:48this is going to be a much more
- 00:25:49difficult situation than previous times.
- 00:25:51There's been previews and this sort of
- 00:25:53manipulation because of all the things
- 00:25:54we've talked about previously. The lack
- 00:25:55of everyone being here in Taipei
- 00:25:57basically cover trying to cover other
- 00:25:59things being unable to test the product.
- 00:26:02And yeah, we just want a video like this
- 00:26:04to be available so that people can
- 00:26:05understand exactly what's going on with
- 00:26:07the RTX 5060 and sort of not just leave
- 00:26:11all that content there, like not just
- 00:26:13leave all the previews, have that be the
- 00:26:14only thing that's related to the 5060
- 00:26:16out
- 00:26:17there. Just we just want a bit more
- 00:26:19transparency on that situation and to be
- 00:26:21very very clear that there's absolutely
- 00:26:23no way that you should be buying this
- 00:26:24product based on preview coverage and
- 00:26:26the cover and the marketing materials
- 00:26:28you would have seen so far from Nvidia
- 00:26:30specifically. and hope like again I'm
- 00:26:32going to say hopefully Nvidia by
- 00:26:34exposing this won't do it again but
- 00:26:37earlier in the video we showed a pretty
- 00:26:39clear timeline where Nvidia over time
- 00:26:41has been getting more aggressive with
- 00:26:44preview type coverage and trying to
- 00:26:47manipulate reviewers and the independent
- 00:26:49media into doing what Nvidia wants. So,
- 00:26:52I think the most concerning part as well
- 00:26:54is every example we can point to, it's
- 00:26:57gotten worse. Mhm. And and a lot of
- 00:26:59these things have been talked about at
- 00:27:01the time. Like there were responses to
- 00:27:03that 8K videos that videos that were
- 00:27:05made pointing out how ludicrous they
- 00:27:06were. There there were responses to
- 00:27:08things like, you know, the 4080 12 GB
- 00:27:11being highly misleading. There were
- 00:27:12responses to, you know, well, there were
- 00:27:15just independent reviews for the 5070
- 00:27:17like a couple of weeks later. And then
- 00:27:18obviously lots of reviewers have been
- 00:27:20talking about the multi-frame generation
- 00:27:22stuff and and all those sorts of things
- 00:27:24in a accurate way. So the fact that all
- 00:27:27that's happened, we keep bringing up
- 00:27:28like, oh, Nvidia is trying to bury 8 GB
- 00:27:30GPUs even though they're still making
- 00:27:32them. And then the next tactic after
- 00:27:34that is 5060 bury that, then do you know
- 00:27:37these previews? What are we going to be
- 00:27:40facing next generation? Like if Nvidia
- 00:27:43is not confident that reviews are going
- 00:27:45to be positive, which and I think that's
- 00:27:46a really key part of these discussions
- 00:27:48is Nvidia doesn't seem very confident in
- 00:27:50these products. They don't seem to
- 00:27:52believe that they're good. So they're
- 00:27:53needing to do more manipulation. If they
- 00:27:55if they release another series that is
- 00:27:58bad, then what are we going to see? Are
- 00:28:00we going to see even more bearing of
- 00:28:03GPUs? Is that going to be for the
- 00:28:04higherend products as well? Are they
- 00:28:06going to focus more on delivering
- 00:28:08content to media platforms that are
- 00:28:10favorable to Nvidia and leaving out
- 00:28:11people who are more independent in their
- 00:28:14thoughts? Um, it's not a good situation
- 00:28:16to be in. But again, like like we sort
- 00:28:17of said, we can highlight this issue and
- 00:28:19then it's probably just going to get
- 00:28:21worse next time. So, I think the issue
- 00:28:22is becoming increasingly timesensitive.
- 00:28:24I really think that gamers need to let
- 00:28:28Nvidia know they're not happy about this
- 00:28:30uh more so than they have been because
- 00:28:32they're really refining this process and
- 00:28:35it's possibly not too far off future
- 00:28:38where Gamers Nexus Harbor and Boxed are
- 00:28:40reviews either we don't have them or
- 00:28:43they're heavily buried because it's not
- 00:28:45difficult for Nvidia to promote these
- 00:28:47previews. It's it's really not difficult
- 00:28:49for them to to boost these uh these
- 00:28:52previews up when you you search for
- 00:28:54content to make them bury everything
- 00:28:56else. And if they see good results from
- 00:28:58doing that, then they are
- 00:29:00disincentivized over time from providing
- 00:29:02the review, you know, drivers or
- 00:29:04hardware to people that again are not
- 00:29:07following the Nvidia script. if they're
- 00:29:09seeing that people are believing reviews
- 00:29:12from those sort of sources and thinking,
- 00:29:14"Oh, I don't need to watch a review from
- 00:29:16a from someone else because I've already
- 00:29:18got all the information from a preview."
- 00:29:20Then they're going to be like, "Well,
- 00:29:21we've already given the, you know, we've
- 00:29:22already done the reviews. They're done.
- 00:29:24Like, all good. So, no need to go any
- 00:29:27further than that." And again, like,
- 00:29:28we're not sitting here. I don't want to
- 00:29:30sit here and whine and complain like,
- 00:29:31"Oh, we're not going to get reviews, not
- 00:29:33be able to do review s not going to get
- 00:29:35review samples or whatever." But I think
- 00:29:38it it goes to the you know an
- 00:29:39independent media is necessary to
- 00:29:42critically evaluate products. It's
- 00:29:43essential in markets like this so that
- 00:29:46at the end of the day consumers are
- 00:29:47getting the best advice. They're not
- 00:29:49wasting money on products that are
- 00:29:51unnecessary and yeah the media is just
- 00:29:53essential for that process and any
- 00:29:55attempts to I don't know manipulate that
- 00:29:58go around things is yeah just not what
- 00:30:00we want to see. We've also started using
- 00:30:02Trix coolers, and I've got to say the
- 00:30:04Panorama SE 360 Black is one of the best
- 00:30:07looking AIO's I've ever seen. The
- 00:30:09quality of the rotatable display is
- 00:30:11incredible, and as complex as the design
- 00:30:13appears, it's remarkably quick and easy
- 00:30:16to install. So, for more information,
- 00:30:18please check the links in the video
- 00:30:19description. Finally, a big thank you to
- 00:30:22GSkill and Trikes for helping to make
- 00:30:23our Computex trip possible this year.
- 00:30:26GSkill offers an amazing range of DDR5
- 00:30:28memory with AMD Expo support allowing
- 00:30:30you to get the most out of your Ryzen
- 00:30:32processor. And we've been using their
- 00:30:33Trident Z5 Neo memory in our test
- 00:30:36systems for years now as we rely on it
- 00:30:38to get the best results. We're not
- 00:30:40concerned for ourselves at all in this.
- 00:30:42Like we'll be fine. We'll continue
- 00:30:45making content. It's really about you
- 00:30:47guys getting accurate information. Not
- 00:30:48even necessarily just you guys. It's
- 00:30:50people who will be, you know, future
- 00:30:52gamers. So don't think about right here
- 00:30:55and now 5 years from now people who are
- 00:30:57coming into PC gaming that don't know
- 00:30:59about all the you know Gamers Nexus
- 00:31:01Harbor Unboxed and whoever else. So
- 00:31:03they're looking for sources of
- 00:31:05information and if they're finding these
- 00:31:08propped up sources by Nvidia that are
- 00:31:10essentially propaganda that's not good.
- 00:31:12So and that I can see a future where
- 00:31:14that's very easily uh going to happen.
- 00:31:17So we'll probably just stop there
- 00:31:19because we could continue talking about
- 00:31:20this subject for quite a while. I'm sure
- 00:31:22we'll have more to say about it in other
- 00:31:23Computex coverage that'll be coming up
- 00:31:25later in the week. So, we'll leave it
- 00:31:28there. We really just wanted to address
- 00:31:29this soon after those previews went out.
- 00:31:32Again, probably not something that's
- 00:31:34going to suck in a lot of you guys, but
- 00:31:36it's still a tactic that we want to see
- 00:31:38stopped from Nvidia. And again, it's
- 00:31:40it's looking like they're wanting to
- 00:31:41head in the other direction with it. So,
- 00:31:43anyway, that's really all we've got to
- 00:31:44say right now, or that we should say
- 00:31:46right now, cuz we don't want to drag
- 00:31:47this video out too much more than what
- 00:31:50we have. So yeah, we'll see what happens
- 00:31:53with these RTX 5060 reviews and we'll
- 00:31:55see how quickly we can get ours out. Um,
- 00:31:57as I said, we've got a few things that
- 00:31:59we're trying to make happen, but quite
- 00:32:01difficult being over here in Taiwan. But
- 00:32:04anyway, thanks for watching. I'm your
- 00:32:05host Steve. I'm your host Tim. See you
- 00:32:07again next time.
