  • 00:00:40
with us Alex, our fantastic student
  • 00:00:42
ambassador, and we're excited to hear
  • 00:00:45
her perspective of the program and her
  • 00:00:46
    student experience.
  • 00:00:49
More team members are also here for you
  • 00:00:51
and we'll monitor the chat. If you hover
  • 00:00:54
over the screen now, you will see the
  • 00:00:56
Q&A session. Please feel free to write
  • 00:00:59
your questions in the Q&A throughout the
  • 00:01:01
presentation and our team will do their
  • 00:01:03
best to answer them. We will also
  • 00:01:06
allocate 10 to 15 minutes at the end of
  • 00:01:09
the presentation to have a Q&A session
  • 00:01:11
with the team and the ambassador.
  • 00:01:14
I would like to let you know that this
  • 00:01:15
webinar will be recorded to make it
  • 00:01:17
available as a resource and I'm now
  • 00:01:20
    handing over to Elellanena.
  • 00:01:23
Thank you Chloe. Um as Chloe said, my
  • 00:01:26
name is Elellanena. I am the summer
  • 00:01:27
    school program coordinator. So that
  • 00:01:29
means I work in the admissions team
  • 00:01:31
within summer school. So if you've had
  • 00:01:33
any contact with us, that's um through
  • 00:01:36
email, live chat, on the phone, that's
  • 00:01:37
me and my team um responding to you and
  • 00:01:40
helping you out. So, I'm going to take
  • 00:01:42
you through a bit of what you can expect
  • 00:01:44
um from the first stages of your time
  • 00:01:46
with us at summer school. So, initially,
  • 00:01:50
we're going to advise you to arrive one
  • 00:01:51
or two days before the start of your
  • 00:01:53
course. This will just allow you to get
  • 00:01:55
situated in London, get used to any time
  • 00:01:58
difference that there may be between us
  • 00:02:00
here and wherever you're traveling from,
  • 00:02:02
and it allows you to start exploring the
  • 00:02:04
new city that you'll be in that will be
  • 00:02:06
your home for the summer as well. So
  • 00:02:09
depending on the session that you are
  • 00:02:10
    attending, the registration dates are
  • 00:02:13
shown on the screen. So these take place
  • 00:02:15
on the Sunday before the start of your
  • 00:02:18
course. Um and so your first taste of
  • 00:02:21
summer school will be at this
  • 00:02:23
registration event um on the Sunday and
  • 00:02:25
we'll get into a bit more information
  • 00:02:27
    about that in a second.
  • 00:02:29
So, as the majority of our students are
  • 00:02:31
international, um we would expect most
  • 00:02:33
of you to be arriving through one of the
  • 00:02:35
main London airports um that you can see
  • 00:02:39
um on the next slide. So, to get from
  • 00:02:42
the airport to LSE, we would advise the
  • 00:02:45
best way to do this um would be via
  • 00:02:47
public transport. Um Chloe, if we could
  • 00:02:50
just pop on to the next slide just so
  • 00:02:51
    everyone can see. Thank you.
  • 00:02:54
Um, so public transport is going to be
  • 00:02:56
the quickest and cheapest way in general
  • 00:02:58
to get from the airport that you land at
  • 00:03:00
into central London. Um, as LSE is so
  • 00:03:03
    centrally located, it's really well
  • 00:03:05
connected um on the London Tube as well
  • 00:03:08
as the trains and any buses as well. So,
  • 00:03:12
if you can have a look on the screen and
  • 00:03:14
find the um airport that you'll be
  • 00:03:15
landing into, um it gives you just a bit
  • 00:03:18
more information about the best way to
  • 00:03:20
get to the LSE campus. But yeah, do bear
  • 00:03:23
in mind that um if you're getting a taxi
  • 00:03:26
or an Uber, it's usually extremely
  • 00:03:28
expensive and much um much longer route
  • 00:03:31
to get to LSE than the public transport
  • 00:03:33
    would
  • 00:03:34
be. So for your registration day, um as
  • 00:03:38
I said, this takes place on the Sunday.
  • 00:03:41
These will take place from midm morning
  • 00:03:43
to late afternoon. So each student will
  • 00:03:46
be given a time slot in which to attend
  • 00:03:49
this registration. These time slots will
  • 00:03:52
be emailed out to you roughly two or 3
  • 00:03:54
weeks prior to the start of your course.
  • 00:03:57
Um so do definitely keep an eye out on
  • 00:03:59
    your emails for that information
  • 00:04:02
especially for session one. That timing
  • 00:04:04
is coming up quite quickly for you lot.
  • 00:04:05
So do keep an eye out. Um at this
  • 00:04:08
    registration we'll have campus tours
  • 00:04:10
available. We'll have food outlets that
  • 00:04:12
are on and around campus to just keep
  • 00:04:14
you fed and you know your energy up
  • 00:04:16
ready for the start of your course with
  • 00:04:18
us. Um, there'll be music on campus. The
  • 00:04:20
LSC shop will be open. We've got brand
  • 00:04:23
    new merchandise with a collaboration
  • 00:04:24
with Nike as well. So, some really great
  • 00:04:27
stuff for you to have a look at. We'll
  • 00:04:29
have members of our team also available.
  • 00:04:32
Have a a tent with um members who are
  • 00:04:34
going to talk about the social and spark
  • 00:04:36
events as well. What's really important
  • 00:04:39
is what you bring with you on that
  • 00:04:40
registration. You will need to bring
  • 00:04:42
your physical copy of your passport.
  • 00:04:45
It's really essential that we have the
  • 00:04:47
physical passport. If you have a photo
  • 00:04:50
copy or a picture of it, we won't be
  • 00:04:52
able to register you. It has to be the
  • 00:04:54
passport that you entered the UK on. You
  • 00:04:57
should also have on hand your LSE ID
  • 00:04:59
number. This will just be useful for us
  • 00:05:02
um in case there's any issues and we
  • 00:05:03
need to bring up your records. And
  • 00:05:06
finally, if you have a Visa or a BRP
  • 00:05:08
card, um again, a physical copy has to
  • 00:05:11
be produced of those. We can't have
  • 00:05:12
photos um or a print off of that. It has
  • 00:05:15
    to be the physical
  • 00:05:17
copy. When you're arriving on that
  • 00:05:19
Sunday, we have a backdrop available for
  • 00:05:22
you. Um so you can come to the campus.
  • 00:05:26
We would advise you come to campus
  • 00:05:27
    before you're checking into LSSE
  • 00:05:29
accommodation. So come along with your
  • 00:05:31
bags. You can drop them in the center
  • 00:05:33
building um and then come through to the
  • 00:05:36
    registration.
  • 00:05:38
So once you've registered with us, um
  • 00:05:41
you can then book into your
  • 00:05:42
    accommodation. The check-in for the
  • 00:05:44
majority of the halls starts at 300 p.m.
  • 00:05:48
But if you're in Sydney Web or Urban
  • 00:05:49
Nest, Westminster Bridge, that will be a
  • 00:05:51
400 p.m. check-in for you. Do just keep
  • 00:05:54
in mind that that bag drop will close
  • 00:05:56
roughly 30 minutes before the end of the
  • 00:05:58
registration. Um and you know, we don't
  • 00:06:00
want you to be without your bags for the
  • 00:06:01
first night in London. So do make sure
  • 00:06:03
you are um picking those up as well. If
  • 00:06:06
you've got if you have booked LSC
  • 00:06:08
accommodation and you've got any queries
  • 00:06:09
about that, we have a dedicated summer
  • 00:06:11
school accommodation team. Um so do get
  • 00:06:14
in touch with them if you've got any
  • 00:06:15
    further
  • 00:06:16
questions. So the main registration on
  • 00:06:19
Sunday will be your course registration
  • 00:06:21
process. Within this you'll be given
  • 00:06:24
your LSE ID card. This gives you access
  • 00:06:26
throughout the whole of campus to all of
  • 00:06:28
    the teaching buildings and everywhere
  • 00:06:29
you'll need to go throughout your course
  • 00:06:31
with us. So once you've been given that,
  • 00:06:33
make sure you keep um keep a hold of it
  • 00:06:35
and make sure you're not losing that
  • 00:06:36
over the three weeks. Um once you've
  • 00:06:39
registered with us, your timets will
  • 00:06:41
become available for your course. These
  • 00:06:43
will be visible on your LSCU account.
  • 00:06:46
The majority of you will have activated
  • 00:06:48
that account already, but do make sure
  • 00:06:50
it's activated and that you have current
  • 00:06:52
access to it. Um as that will be where
  • 00:06:55
that time table will be showing. So
  • 00:06:56
you'll need access to that throughout
  • 00:06:58
    those three weeks.
  • 00:07:00
Um, in addition to this, you'll be able
  • 00:07:03
to activate your IT account. Um, now two
  • 00:07:06
or three days before the start of your
  • 00:07:08
course, you'll be sent the student
  • 00:07:09
handbook. Again, this will be through
  • 00:07:11
your email. So, we're going to ask you
  • 00:07:12
to keep a really good close eye on those
  • 00:07:14
emails and make sure you're reading
  • 00:07:15
everything that is being sent through to
  • 00:07:17
you as though that is really important
  • 00:07:20
    information. So, the student handbook
  • 00:07:22
will include um information about how to
  • 00:07:24
access and activate your IT account as
  • 00:07:27
well as the Moodle system that we'll be
  • 00:07:29
using. So you'll have access to that
  • 00:07:30
once you've registered with us. Um in
  • 00:07:33
addition the student handbook has some
  • 00:07:35
really important information for you as
  • 00:07:37
well. So do keep an eye out for
  • 00:07:41
that. So in addition to this to get into
  • 00:07:44
the UK you need to just ensure that you
  • 00:07:46
have the correct visa information. So
  • 00:07:49
LSC has a specific visa advice team.
  • 00:07:52
They're such great team. and they're
  • 00:07:53
really well trained and they'll be there
  • 00:07:55
to assist you or provide any guidance
  • 00:07:57
that you might need in any visa
  • 00:07:59
processes. Um, you can find their web
  • 00:08:01
query form on their website. Just fill
  • 00:08:04
out what you're asking them, your
  • 00:08:06
    specific information, and they'll get
  • 00:08:07
back to you as soon as
  • 00:08:09
possible. Um, it's important to note
  • 00:08:11
    that ETA, so electronic travel
  • 00:08:14
    authorization documents, um, are newly
  • 00:08:17
in place for travel to the UK. um we
  • 00:08:21
would advise you to have a look on the
  • 00:08:23
UK government website to just see if
  • 00:08:25
that's something that you need to um be
  • 00:08:28
getting before travel to the UK. Those
  • 00:08:31
cost £16 to apply. Um and we make want
  • 00:08:35
to make sure that you're using the UK
  • 00:08:37
ETA app or the gov.uk website to buy
  • 00:08:41
those. If you're booking through third
  • 00:08:43
party websites, they can inflate the
  • 00:08:45
price and it will be the exact same
  • 00:08:46
product. So just go through to the
  • 00:08:48
gov.uk UK website to have a look at
  • 00:08:50
that. Um, we also have visa letters
  • 00:08:53
available for the from the office team.
  • 00:08:56
You can order those through the LSE
  • 00:08:58
eShop. If you've not used the eShop
  • 00:09:00
before, um, you will need to register
  • 00:09:02
for a new account with that before you
  • 00:09:04
    can place your order
  • 00:09:05
    successfully. Once you've placed that
  • 00:09:07
order, that comes through to us in the
  • 00:09:10
admissions team. We need to check that
  • 00:09:12
you've paid your full tuition fees and
  • 00:09:14
if you've booked LSSE accommodation, we
  • 00:09:16
need to receive your full accommodation
  • 00:09:19
fees as well. We'll then manually
  • 00:09:21
generate that letter for you and send it
  • 00:09:22
back to you as a PDF via email. Um, and
  • 00:09:25
that happens as soon as possible once
  • 00:09:27
we've received that all the fees
  • 00:09:29
    relevant to your
  • 00:09:31
application. So once you've started your
  • 00:09:34
course with us, um, you will have
  • 00:09:36
    teaching through lectures and seminars.
  • 00:09:38
The lectures are inclusive of the full
  • 00:09:42
cohort from your course. So everyone on
  • 00:09:44
your course will be in that one lecture.
  • 00:09:46
Um and those will take place over 3
  • 00:09:49
hours. So it's expected that you'll have
  • 00:09:51
one lecture every day and one seminar.
  • 00:09:53
So seminars are in smaller groups. So
  • 00:09:56
it's approximately 20 students and they
  • 00:09:58
will be 90 minutes long. Once you've
  • 00:10:01
been allocated a class group, you won't
  • 00:10:03
be able to change those. So just bear
  • 00:10:05
that in mind. um that you know it's a
  • 00:10:08
really unique experience for you to um
  • 00:10:12
branch out and have that unique social
  • 00:10:15
um opportunity to meet people from all
  • 00:10:17
over the world who are you know really
  • 00:10:19
likeminded like you are trying to um
  • 00:10:22
improve their CV and just gain some more
  • 00:10:24
knowledge from their time with us at
  • 00:10:26
summer school. So if you're not in a in
  • 00:10:28
a class group with maybe one of your
  • 00:10:30
friends that you've traveled with um
  • 00:10:31
take it as an opportunity to really
  • 00:10:33
build those friendships. Um, and we know
  • 00:10:36
students love to build their LSSE, their
  • 00:10:38
um, LinkedIn profiles when they're with
  • 00:10:41
us. So, this is a great place to start
  • 00:10:42
doing that. Um, across the three weeks,
  • 00:10:45
you'll receive 54 hours of teaching
  • 00:10:47
time. So, overall, that's 36 hours of
  • 00:10:49
lectures and 18 hours of seminars. Um,
  • 00:10:52
as and as I'm sure you know, the LSE
  • 00:10:56
summer school courses are based on LSE
  • 00:10:58
    undergraduate modules. Um, and they're
  • 00:11:00
taught by the same world-class faculty.
  • 00:11:02
So you're still getting that really top
  • 00:11:04
level um LSE teaching that um LSE is
  • 00:11:08
    known for across the
  • 00:11:10
world. So once you finish your course
  • 00:11:12
with us um the final exams take place on
  • 00:11:15
the last day of each session. The exam
  • 00:11:18
timetable will be circulated during the
  • 00:11:20
session itself. Um and exams can finish
  • 00:11:23
as late as 6:00 p.m. on the last Friday.
  • 00:11:25
So do bear that in mind when you're
  • 00:11:26
booking flights um back home. We would
  • 00:11:30
advise you to stay for the Friday
  • 00:11:32
evening. There's a leaving party which
  • 00:11:33
is a great um great way to say goodbye
  • 00:11:36
to all the friends that you've made. CC
  • 00:11:37
will touch on that later. Um but yeah,
  • 00:11:40
we advise you to stay for the Friday
  • 00:11:41
night and maybe fly home on the Saturday
  • 00:11:43
just to make it as easy as possible for
  • 00:11:45
you. Um, regarding exams, exams are not
  • 00:11:49
compulsory, but if you're taking your
  • 00:11:52
course with us for credit at your home
  • 00:11:54
university, firstly, you need to have
  • 00:11:57
that approved by your university, that
  • 00:12:00
your home institution is the one that um
  • 00:12:02
gives the credit to you, not LSE. So,
  • 00:12:04
you need to make sure that's approved
  • 00:12:06
before you come to LSC. Um, and also, if
  • 00:12:10
you're taking the course for credit,
  • 00:12:11
you'll need to receive a graded
  • 00:12:13
certificate. To do that, you need to sit
  • 00:12:16
and submit the mid session and the final
  • 00:12:19
exams. So, just bear that in mind if you
  • 00:12:21
are hearing that, you know, the exams
  • 00:12:23
aren't compulsory. If you're wanting to
  • 00:12:25
do the course for credit, it is
  • 00:12:26
compulsory for you to do the
  • 00:12:28
exams. If you're not taking the course
  • 00:12:31
for credit and you're just wanting to do
  • 00:12:32
the um course to get a bit more
  • 00:12:34
information and broaden your scope of
  • 00:12:36
    knowledge, that's absolutely fine. You
  • 00:12:38
don't have to take the exams if you
  • 00:12:39
don't want to. Um, if you've attended at
  • 00:12:42
least 75% of your seminar classes and
  • 00:12:44
    don't take those exams, your
  • 00:12:46
    documentation will state that you're
  • 00:12:47
attended. Um, and if you've taking less
  • 00:12:50
than 75% of the seminar classes, the
  • 00:12:53
    documents will state
  • 00:12:55
registered. So, just bear in mind that
  • 00:12:56
if you are taking those exams, there's
  • 00:12:58
no exceptions for taking them at the
  • 00:13:00
time and the date that is given.
  • 00:13:05
So, most of you, I would expect, are
  • 00:13:07
    staying at LSE
  • 00:13:09
accommodation. This is a really great
  • 00:13:11
environment to be in. It's extremely
  • 00:13:13
social and it's going to really
  • 00:13:15
encourage you to make the most of your
  • 00:13:16
time at LSSE. Um, and broaden the scope
  • 00:13:19
of students that you're making friends
  • 00:13:21
    with, that you're having conversations
  • 00:13:22
with. Um, and that's really going to
  • 00:13:25
have a significant impact on your time
  • 00:13:27
with us. We recommend the LSC
  • 00:13:30
accommodation halls um as they are
  • 00:13:33
    centrally located. They're really great
  • 00:13:35
value especially in central London over
  • 00:13:38
the summer. It's extremely touristy so
  • 00:13:39
the prices do go up quite a lot. Um so
  • 00:13:42
the LSIC pools are a great option for
  • 00:13:45
this. Um they have 24/7 security and
  • 00:13:49
breakfast is also included in these. If
  • 00:13:52
you are booking um accommodation outside
  • 00:13:54
of LSE, just make sure to check any
  • 00:13:57
reviews and the legitimity of the site
  • 00:13:58
before you're booking that just to avoid
  • 00:14:00
    any issues down the
  • 00:14:02
line. Once you're in London, we would
  • 00:14:05
advise that students budget roughly £40
  • 00:14:07
a day to include your food and your
  • 00:14:10
travel. It's extremely variable how much
  • 00:14:13
you will spend a day and how much you
  • 00:14:15
can spend a day. We're aware that many
  • 00:14:17
students are on a much tighter budget
  • 00:14:19
than that and it's very easy to, you
  • 00:14:21
know, really slim that down and spend
  • 00:14:23
less than4 a day, but also I'm sure that
  • 00:14:26
some of you are ready to spash out and
  • 00:14:27
have a great summer. So again, it's very
  • 00:14:30
easy in London to spend more than that,
  • 00:14:31
but so it's extremely variable, but we
  • 00:14:34
would recommend roughly £40 a day should
  • 00:14:36
    um be sufficient for
  • 00:14:38
you. So I'm sure that a lot of you are
  • 00:14:40
starting to think about what you're
  • 00:14:42
wanting to pack to come to summer
  • 00:14:44
school. Um, so even though the um the
  • 00:14:48
courses are part of the summer school,
  • 00:14:50
as I'm sure you're aware, London is not
  • 00:14:52
always sunny and hot. So you need to be
  • 00:14:56
packing for a large majority of
  • 00:14:58
    different weathers. So although some
  • 00:15:01
some days it will be extremely warm and
  • 00:15:03
you'll need um your sun cream and maybe
  • 00:15:06
a sun hat, the next day might be
  • 00:15:08
torrential rain. So be prepared to pack
  • 00:15:11
for all sorts of different weathers.
  • 00:15:13
Regarding your course, make sure you
  • 00:15:15
    bring a laptop, a calculator
  • 00:15:17
    potentially, and also it's really
  • 00:15:19
important you should bring an adapter
  • 00:15:20
just to make sure you can charge
  • 00:15:22
everything. And the plugs in the UK is
  • 00:15:23
slightly different to other areas. Um,
  • 00:15:26
but also don't stress too much about the
  • 00:15:28
clothes that you're bringing. As we're
  • 00:15:30
so centrally located in London, there's
  • 00:15:32
plenty of shops around. So, anything
  • 00:15:34
that you miss, you'll be able to buy.
  • 00:15:38
So, if you're um in central London for
  • 00:15:41
LSSE, you might be wanting to travel
  • 00:15:43
around London, see different areas, and
  • 00:15:45
the best way to do this is public
  • 00:15:47
    transport. The London public transport
  • 00:15:49
is one of the best and most famous
  • 00:15:51
transport systems in the world. I'm sure
  • 00:15:53
you all recognize the red buses, the
  • 00:15:55
black cabs, and the underground tube
  • 00:15:57
stations as well. Um, we would recommend
  • 00:16:00
having a look at the Transport for
  • 00:16:02
London website. This is the company that
  • 00:16:04
run all the buses and the tubes. Um it
  • 00:16:07
will have up to-ate information and also
  • 00:16:09
information about an Oyster card. So you
  • 00:16:12
can have a look as that will provide you
  • 00:16:14
with some cheaper travel and see if
  • 00:16:15
that's um useful to you. But also you
  • 00:16:18
can just tap in and out. It's really
  • 00:16:20
simple with a bank card or your Apple
  • 00:16:22
Pay or um anything like that. So it's a
  • 00:16:24
    really simple system to
  • 00:16:26
use. Also the Citymapper app is really
  • 00:16:30
well loved by Londoners. Again, it
  • 00:16:32
provides up to-date um information and
  • 00:16:36
it will include more than one sort of
  • 00:16:38
transportation for you to use with
  • 00:16:40
getting around London. So, it will be
  • 00:16:41
buses, tubes, um bikes, whether it's
  • 00:16:44
walking is quicker, um all of that as
  • 00:16:47
well. So, we would really strongly
  • 00:16:48
advise you download that city mapper
  • 00:16:50
app. Also, while you're in London, it's
  • 00:16:53
a really good opportunity to explore the
  • 00:16:55
UK beyond the city of London as well.
  • 00:16:57
So, there's a link to the
  • 00:16:59
    trainline.com website here, and that
  • 00:17:02
will give you really good and easy
  • 00:17:03
advice and train routes um to get to
  • 00:17:06
cities further out than London. Um, and
  • 00:17:09
it's a great opportunity to explore the
  • 00:17:11
    UK as a
  • 00:17:12
whole. There's also other options to
  • 00:17:15
    transport around. Firstly would be
  • 00:17:17
walking. Um, London is a really walkable
  • 00:17:20
city and sometimes a tube map can be a
  • 00:17:23
little bit confusing where it can
  • 00:17:24
deceive you as places look really far
  • 00:17:26
apart, but actually they are very
  • 00:17:27
walkable, especially with LSE being so
  • 00:17:30
central. Um, you know, one way from us,
  • 00:17:32
you can walk 10 or 15 minutes and be on
  • 00:17:35
the end of Oxford Street. You walk the
  • 00:17:37
other way 10 minutes, you can be at St.
  • 00:17:38
Paul's Cathedral. So, um, it's, you
  • 00:17:41
know, good to have a look at about how
  • 00:17:43
far it is to walk as well. and make sure
  • 00:17:44
you bring some good walking shoes as I'm
  • 00:17:46
sure you'll be doing quite a lot. Um,
  • 00:17:49
there are Santandere higher bikes and
  • 00:17:51
line bikes and scooters around as well
  • 00:17:53
which you can um hire and help you get
  • 00:17:56
around very quickly as well as um taxis
  • 00:18:00
and mini cows which are also available
  • 00:18:02
    to book as
  • 00:18:03
well. So, at this point I'm going to
  • 00:18:06
bring in Alex who's one of our summer
  • 00:18:08
school ambassadors. Um, so Alex, if
  • 00:18:10
you're there, do you want to introduce
  • 00:18:12
yourself? um about maybe tell us about
  • 00:18:14
the course that you attended at summer
  • 00:18:15
school last year and um the home
  • 00:18:18
    university that you've come from.
  • 00:18:21
Sure. Thank you so much, Eleanor. Um so
  • 00:18:23
my name is Alex Sass like Eleanor said
  • 00:18:25
and I am uh I am in school at the
  • 00:18:29
University of Florida. So I am entering
  • 00:18:32
my senior year now and I am a biology
  • 00:18:35
major but an economics minor. Um at LSE
  • 00:18:39
last year I was there for session three.
  • 00:18:41
So the last session of the summer and I
  • 00:18:43
took the course called EC 104 which is
  • 00:18:46
the wealth and poverty of nations and I
  • 00:18:49
would describe it as this really cool
  • 00:18:51
    history economics crossover course that
  • 00:18:53
kind of tells you that basically says in
  • 00:18:56
in the first day it's like okay look at
  • 00:18:58
the world everyone has very different
  • 00:19:00
    economic conditions but it probably
  • 00:19:02
didn't start like that. So let's go all
  • 00:19:04
the way back. Let's look at the
  • 00:19:05
    transition um like Neolithic Revolution,
  • 00:19:09
hunter gatherers, and then let's really
  • 00:19:11
really fast-paced in three weeks uh take
  • 00:19:14
you all the way up to where we are now
  • 00:19:15
and see kind of where our paths
  • 00:19:17
diverted. So that's um that's the course
  • 00:19:20
I took and it was very cool to take a
  • 00:19:22
course on economic inequality because I
  • 00:19:24
had just come from I actually flew
  • 00:19:26
straight to London from an internship in
  • 00:19:28
Tanzania where I was working at a
  • 00:19:30
    hospital there near Mount Kilimanjaro
  • 00:19:33
and so I was being exposed to um the
  • 00:19:35
Tanzanian medical system and seeing a
  • 00:19:37
lot of inequality when comparing that
  • 00:19:39
with kind of the medical care we have in
  • 00:19:41
the US or the medical care that's
  • 00:19:43
available in the UK. So, uh, I really
  • 00:19:45
loved my course and I'll I'll see if
  • 00:19:48
Ellen wants to kind of direct me a
  • 00:19:49
little more to talk about any any
  • 00:19:50
specific part of it. Of course. Yeah,
  • 00:19:53
thank you for that introduction. Um, do
  • 00:19:55
you want to see if you can explain the
  • 00:19:57
aspects of the course that you found
  • 00:19:59
    particularly enjoyable? Maybe if there's
  • 00:20:01
anything about the course structure or
  • 00:20:03
the teaching style or the content that
  • 00:20:05
you really enjoyed. Of course. Yeah. So,
  • 00:20:07
I got I got really lucky. I had both. I
  • 00:20:10
think this is kind of the case though
  • 00:20:11
for all of the LSSE courses. They just
  • 00:20:12
have amazing faculty. But I really
  • 00:20:14
enjoyed both professors who taught my
  • 00:20:17
course. So the the first week and a half
  • 00:20:19
was taught by one professor and then the
  • 00:20:21
second week and a half by another. But
  • 00:20:23
both of them were really excellent and
  • 00:20:25
experts on the topics they were
  • 00:20:26
teaching. The the uh the teaching you
  • 00:20:29
receive at LSSE is truly worldclass.
  • 00:20:31
These people are incredible experts in
  • 00:20:33
their field. So I would just urge all
  • 00:20:35
students to take advantage of that. Um I
  • 00:20:38
know it can be easy to be like, "Oh, I'm
  • 00:20:40
in London. I want to do this weekend
  • 00:20:41
trip, so I'm going to miss Friday
  • 00:20:43
lecture or something like that. But I
  • 00:20:44
would urge you like remember why you're
  • 00:20:46
coming. Your primary goal is to learn.
  • 00:20:48
Um, and you're not not ever probably
  • 00:20:50
going to have an experience like that
  • 00:20:52
and an opportunity to learn from people
  • 00:20:53
who have this much expertise on the
  • 00:20:55
    subject matter that you're engaging
  • 00:20:57
with. Uh I think my favorite part of the
  • 00:21:00
course though I did I really loved the
  • 00:21:02
lecture component and I know Elanor
  • 00:21:04
talked a little bit about kind of how it
  • 00:21:05
works with your lectures and your
  • 00:21:07
seminars and for different courses it's
  • 00:21:09
different but for me I had seminar or
  • 00:21:12
discussion um some people call it like
  • 00:21:14
recitation in the morning and then I had
  • 00:21:16
lecture in the afternoon. Um but the
  • 00:21:18
seminar really was my favorite component
  • 00:21:21
of the course. you get in small groups
  • 00:21:23
of I think my my group was around 10 to
  • 00:21:26
12 and my overall lecture was like a
  • 00:21:28
hundred kids so there were around eight
  • 00:21:30
or nine different um seminar sections
  • 00:21:33
but you get in these seminars and you
  • 00:21:34
have a uh usually a PhD student who's
  • 00:21:37
teaching that portion and I think they
  • 00:21:40
they are just excellent at really
  • 00:21:42
getting you to engage with the material.
  • 00:21:44
They'll push you and challenge you and
  • 00:21:46
get you to like healthfully debate with
  • 00:21:47
your classmates. Um, and I think at
  • 00:21:50
least for me being at a big university
  • 00:21:52
in the US and being mostly in like
  • 00:21:54
pretty large classes, which is pretty
  • 00:21:56
common when you're studying a um a hard
  • 00:21:58
science or anything really in the
  • 00:22:00
    science, technology, engineering, math
  • 00:22:02
fields, you're you're not really getting
  • 00:22:04
to like argue with 10 people and really
  • 00:22:06
get into it. And I think the um the grad
  • 00:22:10
students do an amazing job of
  • 00:22:11
facilitating that. I would say one one
  • 00:22:14
last point on that is it's really hard
  • 00:22:17
to contribute well and learn a lot
  • 00:22:19
especially in your seminars if you're
  • 00:22:21
underprepared. Um depending on the class
  • 00:22:24
you take you might have you know problem
  • 00:22:26
sets or reading but mostly what I needed
  • 00:22:29
to be doing outside of class besides
  • 00:22:30
writing my essays and studying for my
  • 00:22:32
exam. Um but besides that was you're
  • 00:22:34
given a kind of a set of readings each
  • 00:22:36
week and for each different seminar. And
  • 00:22:39
I would just say I know it's easy to
  • 00:22:40
kind of slack off on those, but you
  • 00:22:42
really don't gain as much and you don't
  • 00:22:44
enjoy as much from the seminar
  • 00:22:45
    discussions unless you've read through
  • 00:22:47
that material at least once um and kind
  • 00:22:49
of gotten the main ideas so that you can
  • 00:22:52
    thoughtfully contribute and benefit from
  • 00:22:54
what your classmates are saying. That's
  • 00:22:57
really great to hear what you've taken
  • 00:22:58
from the course. Thank you. I've got one
  • 00:23:00
more question for you. Um so if you
  • 00:23:03
think back, how did you prepare yourself
  • 00:23:05
before traveling to London? there any
  • 00:23:08
tips or tricks that um you think is
  • 00:23:10
really important for these new students
  • 00:23:11
    attending this year?
  • 00:23:14
Um I would say a couple of things. So
  • 00:23:16
one more like a perspective and then
  • 00:23:17
maybe a little more practical. So first
  • 00:23:20
from a perspective I would just say
  • 00:23:21
    remember that almost everyone who's
  • 00:23:24
going there um doesn't know each other,
  • 00:23:26
right? Of course you'll get a couple
  • 00:23:28
kids who end up being like, "Oh, one of
  • 00:23:29
my friends from my home university is
  • 00:23:31
here." and that's great, but I really do
  • 00:23:33
think there's a huge benefit to the fact
  • 00:23:34
that most people are coming in and uh
  • 00:23:37
they don't they don't really know anyone
  • 00:23:38
and you're probably in a new city and so
  • 00:23:41
like take advantage of that. Um find
  • 00:23:43
people to, you know, study or prep for
  • 00:23:45
exams with or write essays with and find
  • 00:23:47
people to just explore with. you know, I
  • 00:23:49
I met girls in my course um who we had
  • 00:23:53
forgotten that there was the deadline
  • 00:23:54
for the the Oxford weekend trip and so
  • 00:23:57
we all just decided to like group
  • 00:23:59
together and figure out a train and we
  • 00:24:00
went and we had a great adventure in
  • 00:24:02
Oxford and some of those girls went uh
  • 00:24:04
on the boat party with me, which I
  • 00:24:06
highly recommend if you haven't signed
  • 00:24:08
up for the boat party. Super fun. Um
  • 00:24:10
there's like food and dancing and music
  • 00:24:12
and I met lots of lots of people and the
  • 00:24:14
views are really unbeatable um on the
  • 00:24:15
river temps. So, I would say bring bring
  • 00:24:19
a perspective of this is a great
  • 00:24:20
    opportunity to meet friends. Everyone's
  • 00:24:22
in the same boat. Don't get
  • 00:24:23
    self-conscious about the fact that
  • 00:24:25
you're um adapting to a new situation
  • 00:24:27
because basically everyone else is too.
  • 00:24:29
And then from a practical tip, um I
  • 00:24:31
would just really reiterate the point,
  • 00:24:34
Citymapper is your best friend. Um, I
  • 00:24:36
grew up in the Washington DC area and I
  • 00:24:39
didn't now that I when I come back and
  • 00:24:41
visit I'm like, "Oh, I wish I had known
  • 00:24:42
about Citymapper when I was growing up
  • 00:24:44
because it makes it easier there." But
  • 00:24:46
the tube is absolutely the best way to
  • 00:24:49
get around London. Except walking also
  • 00:24:51
is great. But, uh, get comfortable with
  • 00:24:54
the tube early on. Just like force
  • 00:24:55
yourself into it. Don't be afraid to ask
  • 00:24:57
people questions if you're trying to
  • 00:24:59
figure out some line, but City Mapper is
  • 00:25:01
is generally pretty good. Um, so yeah,
  • 00:25:04
practically use City Mapper or walk. I
  • 00:25:06
walked a ton when I was in London, which
  • 00:25:08
is great, too. Um, and yeah, bring an
  • 00:25:12
umbrella. That's great. Thanks so much,
  • 00:25:14
Alex. And yeah, as Alex was saying,
  • 00:25:16
    we're really encouraging students just
  • 00:25:17
to jump in. It might be slightly outside
  • 00:25:19
your comfort zone, but this is a really
  • 00:25:22
unique opportunity that you've um signed
  • 00:25:24
up for. So, do make really make the most
  • 00:25:26
of your three weeks with us um because
  • 00:25:28
it's going to translate back to your
  • 00:25:30
home universities, back to your life at
  • 00:25:31
home. Um, so make the most of it where
  • 00:25:34
you can. Thank you, Alex. We will, I
  • 00:25:36
believe, be hearing from you a bit later
  • 00:25:37
on as well. Um, I'm now going to pass
  • 00:25:40
over to Chloe who's going to tell you a
  • 00:25:43
little bit more about what you can
  • 00:25:44
expect from London and the local area.
  • 00:25:47
Thanks, Elena, and thanks again, Alex,
  • 00:25:49
for sharing about um all the hacking
  • 00:25:52
tips, how you managed to make friends
  • 00:25:53
through exploration in London and also
  • 00:25:56
beyond the city of London as well. So
  • 00:25:58
Ellen has covered through a large part
  • 00:26:00
about all the practical information in
  • 00:26:02
terms of how to prepare for your arrival
  • 00:26:04
date and also a bit about how to
  • 00:26:07
navigate within the city. So once you
  • 00:26:09
figure out about navigating about the
  • 00:26:11
city, it means that you can actually
  • 00:26:13
start exploring London at the tips of a
  • 00:26:15
finger. Of course there are a lot to see
  • 00:26:17
and to do beyond the campus. Um, so the
  • 00:26:21
city is full of amazing historical site,
  • 00:26:23
    museums, parks, art gallery, theaters,
  • 00:26:27
and so much more. So whether you're into
  • 00:26:29
culture, history, or just want to relax
  • 00:26:31
in a beautiful green space with friends
  • 00:26:33
made in a summer school, there's always
  • 00:26:35
something for you. And of course, food
  • 00:26:38
is another thing you would not need to
  • 00:26:40
worry about. In fact, this is the best
  • 00:26:42
thing that um about living in London
  • 00:26:45
because you've got cafes and restaurants
  • 00:26:47
very close by the campus or if you want
  • 00:26:49
to walk to the city center for like 10
  • 00:26:52
minutes, you get to Coven Garden or
  • 00:26:54
other places where you can find a very
  • 00:26:57
large diversified uh food option. Um,
  • 00:27:01
and if you don't feel like going out for
  • 00:27:03
some of the days just because we
  • 00:27:04
mentioned they're going to be like
  • 00:27:06
midterm assessment as a final assessment
  • 00:27:08
and you want to really stick to your
  • 00:27:10
desk doing a bit more studies, that's no
  • 00:27:13
problem at all. We we do have apps like
  • 00:27:15
Deliveroo and Uber Eats that makes it
  • 00:27:18
easy for you to get delivered straight
  • 00:27:19
to your door or get to, you know, get
  • 00:27:22
Tempest so that you can have a fill bag
  • 00:27:24
of food before getting back to the
  • 00:27:26
    study.
  • 00:27:28
Um so just now we covered a bit about
  • 00:27:30
what to pack and Elena has mentioned
  • 00:27:32
that if you are missing out a few items
  • 00:27:36
or if you like more like a light packed
  • 00:27:38
traveler is entirely fine just because
  • 00:27:41
shopping in London is never a problem.
  • 00:27:43
So whatever you're looking for chances
  • 00:27:45
are that you find it here. So on the
  • 00:27:48
slide we have a few spot recommended to
  • 00:27:50
you. So in off the street you can
  • 00:27:53
definitely find some major high street
  • 00:27:55
brands for clothes for shoes or the
  • 00:27:59
closest spot uh near to the LC main
  • 00:28:02
campus and the coing gardens you there
  • 00:28:04
will be some more options surrounding
  • 00:28:06
bouties and street performers or if
  • 00:28:08
you're a fan into like alternative
  • 00:28:10
fashion and food you can also get to the
  • 00:28:12
camp market. Of course, there is a sport
  • 00:28:14
that I can't cover it all at once for
  • 00:28:17
now, but definitely you can check out
  • 00:28:19
what you like to do during your
  • 00:28:21
non-class hours. And again, it might be
  • 00:28:23
some good starting point for you to make
  • 00:28:25
    friends in summer
  • 00:28:27
school. And of course, London is a home
  • 00:28:29
to a lot of iconic stadiums, legendary
  • 00:28:32
teams, and we have actually hosted more
  • 00:28:34
    summer Olympics and Champion leagues
  • 00:28:36
final than any other city. So if you are
  • 00:28:39
a sport lovers, there will be something
  • 00:28:42
for you to check out, especially during
  • 00:28:43
the weekend, whether you want a short
  • 00:28:45
    break from your
  • 00:28:49
study. The London is often taxed with
  • 00:28:52
the perception of being expensive, but
  • 00:28:54
the good thing is if you budget wisely,
  • 00:28:57
you can still have an amazing time here
  • 00:28:59
    without
  • 00:29:00
overspending. So here are a few simple
  • 00:29:03
money-saving tips helped you out. First
  • 00:29:06
of all, check out the student views from
  • 00:29:07
the LSC student union just because they
  • 00:29:10
will try to best deal uh for you while
  • 00:29:13
you're studying here for summer school.
  • 00:29:15
So, there are things like culture
  • 00:29:17
tickets for people who are under 25 that
  • 00:29:19
gets you a discounted price with some
  • 00:29:21
theater shows. Um there are also some
  • 00:29:23
    traveling discount and also some
  • 00:29:25
restaurant offers. Uh the second thing
  • 00:29:28
is you can definitely sign up for the
  • 00:29:30
sea food club app just because you'll be
  • 00:29:32
able to get free hot train for the first
  • 00:29:34
time registration and you can also earn
  • 00:29:37
some points every time when you buy food
  • 00:29:38
    on the
  • 00:29:40
campus and like Ellena has mentioned
  • 00:29:43
London is pretty much a walkable city so
  • 00:29:45
you can actually walk whenever you can.
  • 00:29:48
In central London, loads of places are
  • 00:29:50
actually only a 15 to 20 minutes of
  • 00:29:52
walk. So, it's a great way to explore
  • 00:29:55
    city without thinning out your
  • 00:29:57
wallet. And of course, don't miss out on
  • 00:30:00
the free museums and the exhibitions.
  • 00:30:03
Places like the British Museums, Take
  • 00:30:05
Men, and the National Gallery, they've
  • 00:30:07
got free exhibition session that you can
  • 00:30:09
definitely check out after class. And
  • 00:30:12
finally, if you can try cooking some of
  • 00:30:15
your meals, it will save you money and
  • 00:30:17
also give you a taste of home,
  • 00:30:22
too. So, I'm just going to give you a
  • 00:30:24
bit more hacking tips about how you
  • 00:30:26
manage currency and banking over here.
  • 00:30:29
So, London is majority a cashless city.
  • 00:30:32
So, it means that you can um done all
  • 00:30:35
the transaction with just one debit or
  • 00:30:37
credit card with you. Uh that said, be
  • 00:30:40
aware that your bank might charge
  • 00:30:41
international fees when you use your car
  • 00:30:43
here. So what we advise is that before
  • 00:30:46
you travel, check what fees apply and
  • 00:30:49
maybe consider a card with a lower
  • 00:30:50
    charges if you
  • 00:30:52
can. As Ellena mentioned before, it
  • 00:30:55
might be worth getting a prepaid travel
  • 00:30:57
card, which is known as an Oyster card
  • 00:30:59
for cheap per travel on buses and
  • 00:31:01
trains. And also let your bank know that
  • 00:31:04
you're traveling. That way your cop
  • 00:31:07
won't get blocked it for any suspicious
  • 00:31:09
activity when you start using it in
  • 00:31:11
London. And if your bank has a mobile
  • 00:31:14
app, download it just because it will
  • 00:31:16
just make your life easier to check your
  • 00:31:18
balance or keep track of all your
  • 00:31:20
spending while you're abroad here in
  • 00:31:23
London. Just as an additional note,
  • 00:31:25
there's no need for you to open a UK
  • 00:31:27
bank account here. Your home account is
  • 00:31:30
totally fine for a short stay like this.
  • 00:31:32
And sometimes it may take you actually
  • 00:31:34
some extra time or even extra paperwork
  • 00:31:37
if you're opening a bank account over
  • 00:31:39
here. So you can feel free to stick with
  • 00:31:41
your home account to use while you're
  • 00:31:44
    spending your stay
  • 00:31:46
here. And finally try to use contactless
  • 00:31:49
payment like Apple Pay, Google Pay or
  • 00:31:51
Tap to Pay cards because they're also
  • 00:31:53
very super common here when you're doing
  • 00:31:55
    any transaction and they're very
  • 00:31:57
convenient for small purchases. So make
  • 00:31:59
sure you can test it out uh before you
  • 00:32:02
travel to London because sometimes it
  • 00:32:04
requires you to verify your identity and
  • 00:32:06
there are few more steps. Uh so make
  • 00:32:08
sure you try all of these uh things try
  • 00:32:11
down the apps you need before coming
  • 00:32:13
    through.
  • 00:32:18
For now, I'm just going to provide some
  • 00:32:19
useful information in case if you have
  • 00:32:22
any safety issue on campus and also in
  • 00:32:24
London just because we understand that
  • 00:32:26
sometimes you may be traveling together
  • 00:32:28
with your friends and sometimes there
  • 00:32:30
may be cases that you will need to
  • 00:32:31
    travel by
  • 00:32:33
yourself. So on the LSC uh campus we
  • 00:32:36
operate an open campus policy meaning
  • 00:32:39
that there will be public area that are
  • 00:32:41
    easily accessible.
  • 00:32:43
While we have a 247 security team
  • 00:32:46
available on campus, we will always
  • 00:32:48
encourage our students to keep an eye on
  • 00:32:50
your valuables and prevent leaving them
  • 00:32:53
    unattended, especially in the public
  • 00:32:55
area like the library or the gar. And of
  • 00:32:58
course, if you see anything suspicious
  • 00:33:00
on campus, you can always reach out to
  • 00:33:03
the LC security team. uh and in a
  • 00:33:06
    life-threatening emergency basically
  • 00:33:08
    call 999 or 1112 for
  • 00:33:11
    assistance. Throughout the summer school
  • 00:33:13
period, we will also have a walk-in
  • 00:33:15
office operating during the office hour.
  • 00:33:19
So, this is located at corner house
  • 00:33:21
    ground floor
  • 00:33:23
G.02. So in the case if you need
  • 00:33:25
anything from the team or you basically
  • 00:33:28
just want to have an in-person chat uh
  • 00:33:30
    regarding your summer school experience
  • 00:33:32
with one of SP staff member feel free to
  • 00:33:35
    hold
  • 00:33:38
by. If you're looking for well-being
  • 00:33:41
support we also have a team of qualified
  • 00:33:43
    counselors who can provide confidential
  • 00:33:45
    one-to-one sessions. There's also a
  • 00:33:48
hotline in operation plus a series of
  • 00:33:50
    workshop running across the summer
  • 00:33:52
    school period that support your
  • 00:33:53
well-being. We also want to advise to
  • 00:33:56
all of our international students that
  • 00:33:58
they take out and medical insurance to
  • 00:34:01
ensure that you will be readily covered
  • 00:34:04
for any health care services in the UK.
  • 00:34:07
And again, if you encounter any medical
  • 00:34:10
emergency, it will be best for you to
  • 00:34:12
    call 999. a non-emergency for example
  • 00:34:16
you might be having an headache or you
  • 00:34:18
might need some health care advisor you
  • 00:34:21
can also look up the NHS soho walk-in
  • 00:34:24
center or the se dentist to see whether
  • 00:34:27
there are any services you like to
  • 00:34:32
take I'm now handing over the session to
  • 00:34:35
CC uh who will go through the social
  • 00:34:38
program as well as the spark
  • 00:34:39
    professional skill program with you
  • 00:34:42
thank you so much Chloe Hey, fantastic.
  • 00:34:45
So, my name is Cece and as mentioned
  • 00:34:47
before, I am the events officer for you
  • 00:34:49
all this summer. So, if you see me, do
  • 00:34:51
say hi. So, now I'll be talking about
  • 00:34:53
the social programs that we're running
  • 00:34:54
this year and it's going to be very
  • 00:34:56
exciting. So, the social program forms a
  • 00:34:58
central part of your summer school
  • 00:35:00
experience. So, you must do something
  • 00:35:02
when you get here. We run a wide range
  • 00:35:04
of social events which will help you
  • 00:35:06
    form new
  • 00:35:07
    friendships, build global networks,
  • 00:35:10
experience London, and so much more.
  • 00:35:12
Every year we hear from students that
  • 00:35:15
these events are literally an integral
  • 00:35:17
part of their summer school experience.
  • 00:35:19
So I hope that you also join in with
  • 00:35:21
them this year. We offer a mixture of
  • 00:35:24
free or ticketed events with something
  • 00:35:26
on offer every day both on and off
  • 00:35:30
    campus. This includes, listen carefully,
  • 00:35:33
    walk-in tours through historic London,
  • 00:35:35
the boat party as mentioned before by
  • 00:35:37
Alex on the temps, trips to world famous
  • 00:35:40
towns of Oxford, Cambridge and Windsor.
  • 00:35:44
You also have the option of West End
  • 00:35:45
theater trips. Oo, which include the
  • 00:35:48
Lion King, Lemis, the Phantom of the
  • 00:35:50
Opera and more. And the ever popular
  • 00:35:53
leaving party. You have to go. You have
  • 00:35:55
to sign up as soon as possible where you
  • 00:35:58
can dress up and if you want to, of
  • 00:35:59
course, and obviously say farewell to
  • 00:36:01
the friends you made. Now, you also have
  • 00:36:05
access to the LSC gym membership. So,
  • 00:36:07
once you come in, once you come to
  • 00:36:09
London and you want to go to the gym,
  • 00:36:12
we've got you. We've got everything
  • 00:36:13
prepared for you. So, we've got LSC gym
  • 00:36:15
membership. We also have fitness classes
  • 00:36:17
such as yoga and you're able to do drop
  • 00:36:20
in sessions such as basketball and um we
  • 00:36:25
have got a fantastic facility honestly
  • 00:36:27
    sports facility available in the
  • 00:36:29
Marshall building. Once you come you
  • 00:36:30
should definitely sign up. So we also
  • 00:36:33
have new events. So every year we'll try
  • 00:36:35
our best to do something new. So this
  • 00:36:38
year some of our new events if you are
  • 00:36:40
interested in sports we are bringing in
  • 00:36:43
pickle ball this year. So, it'll be my
  • 00:36:45
first time trying, so I'm going to try
  • 00:36:46
it, too. Um, if you're interested in
  • 00:36:48
singing or you're just here for the good
  • 00:36:50
vibes, we have karaoke. We also have a
  • 00:36:53
funf fair themed event taking place. So,
  • 00:36:55
more information to come. Um, we also
  • 00:36:58
have, if you like your history and
  • 00:37:01
Shakespeare, we will have a tour of the
  • 00:37:04
globe. And if you love theater, as
  • 00:37:06
mentioned before, there will be new
  • 00:37:08
tickets for Wicked, The Mousetrap, and
  • 00:37:12
others. Yeah. Yeah, it should be very
  • 00:37:15
exciting. So definitely look out for
  • 00:37:17
those. Um please note listen very
  • 00:37:20
    carefully because it's really important
  • 00:37:22
these events especially the free events
  • 00:37:24
are over subscribed. So it's a case of
  • 00:37:26
free um first come first serve. So the
  • 00:37:29
minute you register so the um events
  • 00:37:33
will be available 2 weeks before you
  • 00:37:35
come at 12:00 p.m. British time. Okay.
  • 00:37:38
So, you need to register as soon as
  • 00:37:40
possible and then once you arrive, when
  • 00:37:42
the day comes, you make sure you arrive
  • 00:37:44
as soon as possible so you can
  • 00:37:45
definitely be there for the event. But
  • 00:37:48
don't worry, we'll provide all the
  • 00:37:49
information when you get here. So, don't
  • 00:37:51
you stress too much. So, please note,
  • 00:37:54
just remember that it's not mandatory.
  • 00:37:56
You have to go to these events, but it's
  • 00:37:58
    definitely worth it, honestly. And
  • 00:38:00
    personally, my personal favorite was
  • 00:38:03
going to Harry Potter. I really enjoyed
  • 00:38:04
it. Like, I felt like a wizard that day.
  • 00:38:06
So, I definitely recommend you come to
  • 00:38:08
Harry Potter if you are a fan. So, yeah,
  • 00:38:11
without further ado, enough about me,
  • 00:38:14
enough me talking. I'm going to ask Eli
  • 00:38:16
to join us. I'm going to ask Eli a few
  • 00:38:19
    questions.
  • 00:38:23
Yeah. Hello, Hello, Eli. How are
  • 00:38:25
you? Uh, yeah, I'm good. I'm good. How's
  • 00:38:28
it going? It is going well. I'm so
  • 00:38:30
excited to ask you these questions. So,
  • 00:38:33
I want you to please introduce yourself
  • 00:38:35
and just let us know where and what you
  • 00:38:37
    currently study.
  • 00:38:40
So, uh hello everyone. My name is Ellie,
  • 00:38:42
not Eli, but all good. Uh uh so I'm
  • 00:38:47
studying at the University of Sanalan in
  • 00:38:50
Switzerland. Uh I'm enrolled in an
  • 00:38:53
economics bachelor and uh last year I
  • 00:38:56
was part of session two uh international
  • 00:38:59
    relation course uh
  • 00:39:02
IR20 which was about the west the bricks
  • 00:39:05
and uh the crisis of the international
  • 00:39:08
order. So yeah very happy to be there
  • 00:39:11
and to um uh share you my experience.
  • 00:39:14
Perfect. Thank you so much. So my next
  • 00:39:17
question is for you to share with us
  • 00:39:19
    your experience and insight regarding
  • 00:39:21
the social programs that you attended
  • 00:39:24
and what types of activities and events
  • 00:39:26
were included in what you did.
  • 00:39:29
Yeah. So the the social event was
  • 00:39:31
definitely a highlight of the um of of
  • 00:39:34
uh the the LSC summer school. Uh I I
  • 00:39:37
always talk about the the boat party. Um
  • 00:39:40
    it's it's definitely a highlight. You
  • 00:39:42
need to sign up for this. Right. Um it's
  • 00:39:45
it's basically a boat party. So you will
  • 00:39:49
be around like um I don't know 200
  • 00:39:52
people, 100 people from LSC on the boat
  • 00:39:55
and you will go along the whole times
  • 00:39:58
and then uh I mean amazing view, amazing
  • 00:40:02
people. You have music, a dance floor.
  • 00:40:04
So was definitely a highlight and it's
  • 00:40:07
if I remember correctly Friday night so
  • 00:40:10
it's actually the end of the week. So
  • 00:40:12
you can definitely spend some time
  • 00:40:13
there. Uh so that was one of the
  • 00:40:15
highlights but otherwise I would really
  • 00:40:17
recommend you to try to go to Oxford or
  • 00:40:20
Cambridge and and and see what's uh not
  • 00:40:24
only in London but also in in different
  • 00:40:26
cities and and culturally is also very
  • 00:40:28
interesting. Yeah. And I agree with you
  • 00:40:31
100%. The boat part is definitely a
  • 00:40:33
highlight especially when the the bridge
  • 00:40:35
    opens. That's really beautiful. Yeah.
  • 00:40:37
    Yeah. Yeah. Right. Definitely. And
  • 00:40:39
you're correct when it comes to the day
  • 00:40:41
trips going to Oxford and Cambridge.
  • 00:40:42
It's so beautiful when you go there. So
  • 00:40:44
    different to London. So that's
  • 00:40:45
definitely a highlight. So one of my
  • 00:40:48
last questions for you, Ellie, got it
  • 00:40:51
right now. What top tips do you have
  • 00:40:54
    managing
  • 00:40:55
for managing your budget while at summer
  • 00:40:57
    school? This is very important.
  • 00:41:00
Uh so sorry, you mean managing my time
  • 00:41:03
timet wise? more managing what what um
  • 00:41:07
what do you think is a good idea in
  • 00:41:09
terms of what tips do you have for the
  • 00:41:11
students in terms of budgeting? I know
  • 00:41:13
    Chloe mentioned about budgeting earlier
  • 00:41:14
but do you have anything that you want
  • 00:41:16
to add? Yeah, definitely important. I
  • 00:41:19
mean for me uh I mean from Switzerland,
  • 00:41:22
London was even a bit cheap but I can
  • 00:41:25
definitely have give you some tips uh
  • 00:41:28
for London. Uh I mean uh yeah concerning
  • 00:41:31
    budgeting I I I would really recommend
  • 00:41:33
you to um at the end of the courses uh
  • 00:41:36
that means uh Bon you can just go with
  • 00:41:39
your friends one street away from the
  • 00:41:42
campus you have a a street with lots of
  • 00:41:44
restaurants pasta place very cheap as
  • 00:41:47
well. Um but otherwise go to the
  • 00:41:49
supermarkets and of course if you live
  • 00:41:52
next to Coven Garden or Soho I mean the
  • 00:41:56
it will be more expensive but but if you
  • 00:41:58
go a bit further definitely you will
  • 00:42:01
find something affordable and uh and
  • 00:42:03
thanks to the events um that are
  • 00:42:06
organized by LSC I mean you can
  • 00:42:09
definitely allocate part of your budget
  • 00:42:11
to these events and then I mean it's all
  • 00:42:14
right I think. Perfect. Thank you so
  • 00:42:17
much. That was very useful. Thank you so
  • 00:42:19
much, Ellie. So, now I'm gonna ask Alex.
  • 00:42:27
Hey, Alex. Good to see you again.
  • 00:42:30
Hi. So, Alex, I've got a couple of
  • 00:42:33
questions for you if that's okay. Okay.
  • 00:42:35
So, you mentioned going to Oxford,
  • 00:42:37
right? Someone asked, "What was your
  • 00:42:39
    favorite place in central London?"
  • 00:42:42
My favorite place in central London? Hm.
  • 00:42:46
I don't know if would this be considered
  • 00:42:48
central to say burough market? That's
  • 00:42:49
probably not central, is it? Yeah, it
  • 00:42:51
is. It is still central. Okay. Central.
  • 00:42:53
It's still London. I'll go with it. So
  • 00:42:55
So if if for people maybe on the webinar
  • 00:42:58
who don't know what Burough Market is,
  • 00:43:00
um Burough Market is this massive
  • 00:43:03
outdoor like open air food market. Um
  • 00:43:06
and so basically it's very common for
  • 00:43:08
LSSE students to go do this. And I will
  • 00:43:11
say it's a little more on the touristy
  • 00:43:13
side, but that's okay. Remember you're
  • 00:43:14
tourists. you can do some of the
  • 00:43:16
touristy things. Um, but Burough Market
  • 00:43:18
is really really fun. Very to easy to
  • 00:43:20
get to via um via the tube. I lived in
  • 00:43:24
Hi Hobburn. Um, so I but I think almost
  • 00:43:27
every dorm it's like fairly easy to to
  • 00:43:29
get to a tube station and and get to
  • 00:43:31
Burough Market. Um, and then you
  • 00:43:34
    basically spend the morning like
  • 00:43:35
    exploring, trying all these different
  • 00:43:37
foods. Um, I highly recommend that you
  • 00:43:41
get the creme brulee donut. I can't
  • 00:43:43
remember the name, but you will find it.
  • 00:43:45
People are swarming. Um, so, but there's
  • 00:43:48
lots of lots of great things to try.
  • 00:43:49
    Definitely arrive hungry because you
  • 00:43:51
will leave very full. But, uh, but then
  • 00:43:54
after that, I highly recommend just
  • 00:43:55
walking around kind of the Burough
  • 00:43:57
Market area. It's really pretty. There's
  • 00:43:58
lots of great views um and places to
  • 00:44:01
take pictures with friends and stuff
  • 00:44:02
over the water. So, I would definitely
  • 00:44:04
say um that that was probably my
  • 00:44:06
favorite little London spot. I recommend
  • 00:44:08
doing that on like a Saturday. I think
  • 00:44:10
it's only maybe open on Saturday
  • 00:44:11
mornings, but I I think that's when we
  • 00:44:12
went. So, wow, that's amazing. So, I
  • 00:44:15
hope everyone wrote that down. Burough
  • 00:44:17
market. Okay, you have to come. If
  • 00:44:19
you've seen on in Sorry, I'll just add
  • 00:44:21
one thing to that. If you've seen the
  • 00:44:23
viral videos on Instagram where there's
  • 00:44:26
those huge cups of like the most
  • 00:44:28
    beautiful strawberries you've ever seen
  • 00:44:29
and then people like pouring the melted
  • 00:44:31
chocolate, that's at Burough Market. So,
  • 00:44:34
you can have all of your your
  • 00:44:35
    chocolatecovered strawberry dreams come
  • 00:44:37
    true.
  • 00:44:39
delicious. Honestly, which leads me to
  • 00:44:42
ask, what was your favorite food in
  • 00:44:44
London when you were here? My by far my
  • 00:44:47
favorite meal that I had was at I
  • 00:44:51
forgive me if I butcher the
  • 00:44:52
pronunciation, but I think it's called
  • 00:44:53
dash. Um, and it's yeah, it's an Indian
  • 00:44:57
restaurant in Covent Garden and it is
  • 00:44:59
the best Indian food I've ever had in my
  • 00:45:01
life. And I would not say I'm like a
  • 00:45:03
fanatic about Indian food usually, but
  • 00:45:04
    it's incredible. Highly recommend you.
  • 00:45:07
They don't really do reservations, so
  • 00:45:08
you have to like go early and just kind
  • 00:45:10
of get in a queue, but it it really
  • 00:45:11
doesn't take long. It's very much worth
  • 00:45:13
it. I highly recommend grabbing a group
  • 00:45:15
of friends and doing that for dinner one
  • 00:45:17
night. Um maybe is like your last night
  • 00:45:20
in London or something, but um really
  • 00:45:22
really good food there. And then I think
  • 00:45:24
not a lot of people know about all the
  • 00:45:27
lunch recommend or like lunch options
  • 00:45:29
around campus cuz typically you'll have
  • 00:45:31
either you'll have your lecture and then
  • 00:45:33
you'll have lunch and then seminar or
  • 00:45:34
the opposite. And so, um, my friends and
  • 00:45:37
I found this place called Castner and
  • 00:45:39
Ovens, which, uh, is like maybe like a
  • 00:45:43
10-minute walk from LSC. It's really,
  • 00:45:45
really good. And it's all like
  • 00:45:47
home-cooked food, and you get to like
  • 00:45:49
pick different items and like it's like
  • 00:45:52
if your grandma or your mom had cooked
  • 00:45:53
you a really delicious meal. So, if
  • 00:45:55
you're craving some like more home
  • 00:45:57
cooking and not just like quick food, I
  • 00:45:59
    would recommend Castner and Ovens.
  • 00:46:02
Amazing. if you could just write that
  • 00:46:03
down in the chat for us so we don't
  • 00:46:05
    spell incorrectly. But honestly, Alex,
  • 00:46:08
Ellie, fantastic. Thank you so so much.
  • 00:46:11
And now I'm going to move on to the
  • 00:46:14
    spark sessions. Fantastic. So with
  • 00:46:18
spark, this is our very own professional
  • 00:46:21
skills program. LSC we offer worldclass
  • 00:46:25
as mentioned before by Alex worldclass
  • 00:46:28
    extracurricular activities as well to
  • 00:46:30
    enhance your personal and professional
  • 00:46:32
    development alongside your academic
  • 00:46:35
growth. Okay. There are many spark
  • 00:46:37
sessions you can attend during that week
  • 00:46:40
    including events, panels and workshops.
  • 00:46:42
Gain insights from industry experts and
  • 00:46:45
    internal LSE leaders. Okay. Spark
  • 00:46:47
    sessions normally run during lunchtime
  • 00:46:50
or the evening. Some of the sessions
  • 00:46:52
we'll be running some of the sessions we
  • 00:46:54
will be running sorry are like CV
  • 00:46:56
    workshops or postgraduate recruitment
  • 00:46:59
talks or dealing with anxiety literally
  • 00:47:02
so many sessions that we can literally
  • 00:47:04
that you can literally attend and it
  • 00:47:07
will literally help you enhance in your
  • 00:47:08
personal growth. So with that being
  • 00:47:13
said there are also new spark events
  • 00:47:16
also. So not just new social events but
  • 00:47:18
new spark events. And this one is quite
  • 00:47:20
it's quite interesting because um this
  • 00:47:23
one is improv workshop and it's an
  • 00:47:25
    engaging interactive workshop to de
  • 00:47:28
develop key soft skills through improv
  • 00:47:30
based activities. This can help with
  • 00:47:33
    building confidence in public speaking
  • 00:47:36
interviews and so much more. Just a
  • 00:47:38
workshop to help you come out your
  • 00:47:39
comfort zone and be more confident when
  • 00:47:41
you're in the working um world or even
  • 00:47:43
in the studying world. But ensure you
  • 00:47:46
register via Eventbrite. So when the um
  • 00:47:49
events do go live, you need to register
  • 00:47:51
via Eventbrite. The tickets go live
  • 00:47:54
again two weeks before the sessions and
  • 00:47:57
at 12:00 p.m. British time. So please
  • 00:48:00
remember again, we overs subscribe these
  • 00:48:02
events. So the minute you are done or
  • 00:48:04
your your um you just finished your
  • 00:48:06
course, you need to get there as soon as
  • 00:48:08
possible or if you can't attend, it
  • 00:48:10
would be great if you can just cancel
  • 00:48:11
your tickets so someone else can go.
  • 00:48:14
    So moving on
  • 00:48:17
um you can also so basically the the
  • 00:48:21
best thing about this is when you attend
  • 00:48:23
two sessions you get a bronze badge. If
  • 00:48:26
you attend four you get silver and if
  • 00:48:29
you attend six you get gold badge. And
  • 00:48:31
with that being said these badges are
  • 00:48:32
micro accredititations which you can add
  • 00:48:35
to your CV or LinkedIn profile to
  • 00:48:37
    highlight your dedication to
  • 00:48:39
    professional skills development. I hope
  • 00:48:42
that made sense and if not, please do
  • 00:48:44
not hesitate to ask any questions on the
  • 00:48:46
chat. And with that, thank you so much.
  • 00:48:49
I am done. I'm passing it back to Chloe.
  • 00:48:52
Thank you, CeCe. And thanks so much for
  • 00:48:55
um every student ambassador who've been
  • 00:48:57
    speaking about the authentic experience
  • 00:48:58
at summer school. I'm very sure that
  • 00:49:00
their advice will be come in very handy
  • 00:49:03
for all of you who are arriving for this
  • 00:49:05
year summer school. Before we jump onto
  • 00:49:07
the Q&A session, I would just want to
  • 00:49:09
quickly bring up a few reminders
  • 00:49:11
including on Unibody community. So since
  • 00:49:14
all of you here should have already
  • 00:49:15
received an offer, you should also
  • 00:49:17
receive an invite to join the Unibody
  • 00:49:20
community. So basically it's an app that
  • 00:49:23
you can get on to start joining in
  • 00:49:25
student group to get some peer to answer
  • 00:49:27
    question and basically ask anything
  • 00:49:29
around. So we even got staff members
  • 00:49:32
monitoring from the back end in case if
  • 00:49:34
there are any um questions that we felt
  • 00:49:37
like answering could help with a wider
  • 00:49:39
audience. So really take advantage of
  • 00:49:42
this platform. Make sure that you join
  • 00:49:43
it in advance and start making
  • 00:49:45
connections and perhaps you can make
  • 00:49:47
friends in advance and um before you
  • 00:49:50
    actually arrive for the course.
  • 00:49:52
The second thing I'd like to share here
  • 00:49:54
is more like a summarized uh checklist
  • 00:49:57
that includes all the key information we
  • 00:49:59
have just uh spoken through. So don't
  • 00:50:02
worry if you are not getting this
  • 00:50:05
screenshot in time because again this
  • 00:50:07
will be included in the student handbook
  • 00:50:09
that will be emailed to you closer to
  • 00:50:12
this start of the session. So don't
  • 00:50:14
    worry about
  • 00:50:16
this. Um last but not least I'm sharing
  • 00:50:19
with you two QR codes. one of which
  • 00:50:21
would takes you to the frequently asked
  • 00:50:24
question web page on our website. So in
  • 00:50:26
a case if you are looking for answers
  • 00:50:29
during our out of office hours, you can
  • 00:50:32
definitely find most of your answers on
  • 00:50:34
our web page. Um you can also follow us
  • 00:50:38
on Instagram just because you can't um
  • 00:50:41
hear a lot from our past summer school
  • 00:50:43
    alumine. We've got um student
  • 00:50:46
ambassadors take over and sometimes we
  • 00:50:48
collaborate them uh on a lot of blogs
  • 00:50:51
and also posters and during the program
  • 00:50:54
we'll also be posting a lot of like
  • 00:50:55
event reminders and updates here. So
  • 00:50:58
again it will become a very handy
  • 00:51:00
platform for you to stay tuned.
