    - The path you take in life is your most important decision.
  • 00:00:17
In my case, I wanted my life to be great
  • 00:00:19
and I feared boredom and mediocrity
  • 00:00:22
    more than I feared failure.
  • 00:00:24
Since I didn't start out with money,
  • 00:00:26
and I didn't need much more than a bed to sleep in
  • 00:00:29
and food to eat, I could skew my decisions
  • 00:00:31
    to pursue my adventures.
  • 00:00:33
So ever since I was a kid, I ran after the things
  • 00:00:36
I wanted, crashed, got up and ran again,
  • 00:00:41
    and crashed again.
  • 00:00:42
And each time I crashed I learned something, got better,
  • 00:00:47
    and crashed less.
  • 00:00:49
By doing that over and over again,
  • 00:00:51
I learned to love this process,
  • 00:00:53
even the crashing part of it.
  • 00:00:55
    Through it, I encountered reality,
  • 00:00:58
and I learned how to deal with it,
  • 00:01:01
which inspired another one of my most fundamental principles
  • 00:01:05
which is that truth is the essential foundation
  • 00:01:08
    for producing good outcomes.
  • 00:01:11
By truth, I don't mean anything more than
  • 00:01:14
    the way the world works.
  • 00:01:16
I believe that we were given the laws of reality by nature.
  • 00:01:20
Humans didn't create them, but we can use them
  • 00:01:23
to foster our own evolution and achieve our goals.
  • 00:01:26
Realizing that made me a hyperrealist,
  • 00:01:30
by which I mean I became someone who has discovered
  • 00:01:33
the great rewards of deeply understanding, accepting,
  • 00:01:37
and working with reality as it is
  • 00:01:40
and not as I wish it would be.
  • 00:01:44
When I say I'm a hyperrealist, people sometimes think
  • 00:01:48
I'm saying that dreams can't come true.
  • 00:01:50
    That's absolutely not true.
  • 00:01:53
Without pursuing dreams, life is mundane.
  • 00:01:57
What I mean is that to me, hyperrealism is the best way
  • 00:02:01
to choose one's dreams and then achieve them.
  • 00:02:04
Having big dreams plus embracing reality plus having
  • 00:02:09
lots of determination will bring you a successful life.
  • 00:02:13
I believe this formula is true for everyone,
  • 00:02:16
but what does a successful life look like?
  • 00:02:19
We each have to decide for ourselves what success is.
  • 00:02:23
I don't care whether you want to be a master of the universe
  • 00:02:26
or to live under a palm tree or anything else.
  • 00:02:29
    I really don't.
  • 00:02:31
Each of us chooses goals based on our values and decides
  • 00:02:35
on the best path to achieve them, but we all need approaches
  • 00:02:40
to making decisions that work well, especially when facing
  • 00:02:43
problems, mistakes, and weaknesses that stand in our way.
  • 00:02:47
To succeed, we must embrace all our realities,
  • 00:02:51
especially the harsh realities that we wish weren't true.
  • 00:02:55
At first, looking at these harsh realities caused me
  • 00:02:58
a lot of pain, but I learned that this pain was just
  • 00:03:01
psychological and that by seeing things differently made
  • 00:03:05
    all the difference.
  • 00:03:06
I came to view problems like puzzles that would reward me
  • 00:03:10
    if I could solve them.
  • 00:03:11
They would help me deal with the problem at hand,
  • 00:03:14
and they would give me principles for dealing
  • 00:03:16
with similar problems in the future.
  • 00:03:19
I learned to treat pain as a cue that a great learning
  • 00:03:23
opportunity is at hand, which led me to realize
  • 00:03:27
that pain plus reflection equals progress.
  • 00:03:32
    Meditation has been invaluable
  • 00:03:34
in helping me see things that way.
  • 00:03:37
I found that when I calmed myself down
  • 00:03:40
and embraced my realities and dealt with them,
  • 00:03:43
the rewards brought me pleasure and the pain faded.
  • 00:03:47
Each of us has the unique capability to think logically
  • 00:03:51
to reflect on ourselves and our circumstances
  • 00:03:54
and to direct our own personal evolution.
  • 00:03:58
Doing this well is just a matter of following
  • 00:04:01
    a simple five-step process.
  • 00:04:03
In episode three, we'll explore what that process is
  • 00:04:07
    and how to use it.
