hey Leo here for actualized.org and in
  • 00:00:04
this episode I'm going to be talking
  • 00:00:06
about the illusion of success how
  • 00:00:09
successful people are not happy the way
  • 00:00:12
    that we usually assume
  • 00:00:17
    [Music]
  • 00:00:33
there's a very deep illusion within you
  • 00:00:35
that keeps you from growing to your full
  • 00:00:38
potential and this is the illusion of
  • 00:00:41
success and this got imprinted into you
  • 00:00:44
as part of our modern culture what is
  • 00:00:48
    this
  • 00:00:48
illusion it goes something like this you
  • 00:00:51
see celebrities all around you in the
  • 00:00:54
news and in the movies you see your
  • 00:00:57
    successful friends you see your
  • 00:00:58
co-workers who are are striving to climb
  • 00:01:01
the corporate ladder and uh acquire
  • 00:01:04
stuff for themselves in life maybe you
  • 00:01:06
see certain family members who have uh a
  • 00:01:09
lot of money and these people they seem
  • 00:01:12
happy it seems like they're doing it
  • 00:01:14
they're achieving it they're living the
  • 00:01:15
right life they're out there doing the
  • 00:01:18
normal stuff they're not sitting at home
  • 00:01:20
    reading books and doing personal
  • 00:01:21
    development they're out there engaging
  • 00:01:23
in life they're having fun they're
  • 00:01:25
working hard and they're putting their
  • 00:01:27
    lives
  • 00:01:28
together and then you see these Mega
  • 00:01:31
Achievers in the newspapers you see
  • 00:01:34
these uh Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and
  • 00:01:37
Elon musks who do all these big things
  • 00:01:40
in business who are just like killing it
  • 00:01:42
out there and you think to yourself
  • 00:01:44
that's what I need to be like like one
  • 00:01:47
of them if only my life was like that
  • 00:01:49
then I would have the money and if I had
  • 00:01:51
the good looks and I I would have my hot
  • 00:01:54
girlfriend or my uh my dream husband and
  • 00:01:57
then I have the great Social Circle and
  • 00:01:58
I have free freedom and time and money
  • 00:02:00
to travel and to do all these exotic
  • 00:02:03
things and then I would have a really
  • 00:02:05
exciting life and I would be doing big
  • 00:02:08
things with my business I would be doing
  • 00:02:10
significant things for the world for the
  • 00:02:13
economy and that is basically the
  • 00:02:17
    epitome of uh self-actualization
  • 00:02:20
right that's the illusion and this
  • 00:02:22
illusion is further fed by all these
  • 00:02:25
false role models that you see
  • 00:02:26
highlighted in the news and in time mag
  • 00:02:29
azine and uh just uh across the internet
  • 00:02:34
    Arnold Schwarzenegger Alon musk Tony
  • 00:02:37
Robbins Oprah Steve Jobs Donald Trump
  • 00:02:41
you know whoever your role models are uh
  • 00:02:43
these all feed into this illusion now
  • 00:02:46
Trump is an interesting example actually
  • 00:02:47
because you might think like well Leo
  • 00:02:49
who would take Trump as as a role model
  • 00:02:52
um actually you'd be surprised I had a
  • 00:02:54
client about two years ago a coaching
  • 00:02:56
client of mine who um we would Skype
  • 00:02:59
into coaching sessions and this guy was
  • 00:03:01
really into success and so he wanted
  • 00:03:03
help from me to kind of organize his
  • 00:03:05
life help them put some productivity
  • 00:03:07
habits into place and and so forth and
  • 00:03:10
one day he was just picking my brain
  • 00:03:11
about stuff related to productivity and
  • 00:03:13
then he starts talking about his role
  • 00:03:15
models and his role models are all these
  • 00:03:16
like Mega successful people and then of
  • 00:03:19
course uh Trump comes up and this was uh
  • 00:03:21
couple years ago so Trump was like just
  • 00:03:24
starting to get into the into the uh
  • 00:03:26
presidential race and um I knew this guy
  • 00:03:30
was trouble but but my client my client
  • 00:03:31
is telling me like oh but Leo like look
  • 00:03:34
at Trump and I'm like why do you bring
  • 00:03:35
up Trump he's like well look he's he's
  • 00:03:37
got the perfect everything he's got the
  • 00:03:38
perfect he's got the perfect house the
  • 00:03:40
perfect Lifestyle the perfect wife the
  • 00:03:43
perfect kids it's all so well put
  • 00:03:45
together and I'm sitting there and I'm
  • 00:03:47
just trying to contain my uh my my my
  • 00:03:50
shock and kind of laughter because of
  • 00:03:52
like my jaw is a gape um at how he's
  • 00:03:55
trying to emulate Trump and that he
  • 00:03:57
thinks that this is his role model and
  • 00:03:59
this is what he wants me to coach him to
  • 00:04:02
    be
  • 00:04:03
like um and this client was a was a you
  • 00:04:07
know was this fairly successful guy
  • 00:04:09
already um he was uh he had his own
  • 00:04:12
little small business that he was
  • 00:04:13
working on and he was doing well for
  • 00:04:15
himself and he was a well educated guy
  • 00:04:17
well put together guy so he wasn't just
  • 00:04:19
some you know um just uh some some
  • 00:04:22
redneck uh in in the countryside or
  • 00:04:25
something like that so um so yeah I just
  • 00:04:29
that's an aside but anyways uh you got
  • 00:04:30
to be careful with all these what I call
  • 00:04:32
false Role Models these Role Models
  • 00:04:34
Society puts them out there as these
  • 00:04:36
very successful people but you got to be
  • 00:04:38
    very
  • 00:04:39
    careful this happens with celebrities
  • 00:04:41
also you might fall into this trap with
  • 00:04:43
puas uh whatever Pua teachers out there
  • 00:04:46
pickup teachers that you're following be
  • 00:04:49
very careful because all these people
  • 00:04:52
the Pu the celebrities and all these
  • 00:04:54
others that I mentioned really what
  • 00:04:55
they're giving you is they're giving you
  • 00:04:56
    a veneer of success
  • 00:05:00
    this is all an
  • 00:05:01
illusion all of this is surface level
  • 00:05:05
stuff these people are not happy at all
  • 00:05:08
    at
  • 00:05:09
all at all these people are on drugs
  • 00:05:14
they're addicted to all manner of things
  • 00:05:15
    from gross to
  • 00:05:18
subtle they are addicted to success they
  • 00:05:20
are addicted to work they are addicted
  • 00:05:22
to Ego they addicted to manipulation
  • 00:05:25
they are stressed they are overworked
  • 00:05:27
    they are depressed
  • 00:05:29
they just have a lot of stuff going on
  • 00:05:31
    in their
  • 00:05:32
lives granted but that doesn't mean very
  • 00:05:35
much it's got very little to do with
  • 00:05:38
actual fulfillment in life and it's got
  • 00:05:40
very little to do with your actual
  • 00:05:42
development as a human being these are
  • 00:05:45
    not high quality human
  • 00:05:47
beings they just happen to be Mega
  • 00:05:50
successful and that's a very important
  • 00:05:52
    distinction to
  • 00:05:54
draw what these people are really is
  • 00:05:57
their masters of manipulation and they
  • 00:05:59
have found their niche in life which has
  • 00:06:02
allowed them then to become very
  • 00:06:05
successful by masters of manipulation I
  • 00:06:07
    don't necessarily mean that they're
  • 00:06:08
manipulating you in some nefarious way
  • 00:06:11
    although many of them
  • 00:06:13
are um I'm more mean that they are
  • 00:06:16
    Masters at manipulating life and
  • 00:06:19
themselves so they have become very very
  • 00:06:21
good at manipulating their situation and
  • 00:06:24
their lives and the lives of everybody
  • 00:06:26
around them and the lives of Their
  • 00:06:28
audience so that they have this sense of
  • 00:06:32
success and it works to a large degree
  • 00:06:34
because you create this bubble around
  • 00:06:36
yourself of success and then you're able
  • 00:06:38
to trick yourself into thinking that
  • 00:06:39
well because I have all this success and
  • 00:06:42
I'm able to manipulate reality so
  • 00:06:43
effectively that that means that I'm a
  • 00:06:46
good human being that I'm really
  • 00:06:47
developed and that I'm really happy
  • 00:06:50
whereas in fact it's a hollow victory
  • 00:06:53
for these people and of course we see
  • 00:06:55
this in the news periodically with
  • 00:06:57
    various celebrities who commit suicide
  • 00:06:59
side or overdose on drugs or have
  • 00:07:02
behavioral problems or get angry and
  • 00:07:06
rant at people or whatever right we see
  • 00:07:09
their true colors once in a while but
  • 00:07:13
    only once in a
  • 00:07:15
while and generally though what we have
  • 00:07:17
in a culture is we have this
  • 00:07:21
um this illusion of success and then
  • 00:07:25
this illusion is so deeply soaked into
  • 00:07:28
your bones you so believe in it that you
  • 00:07:31
    think that this is what
  • 00:07:31
    self-actualization is
  • 00:07:33
about what it's for is to help you to do
  • 00:07:38
that well I got news for you you're
  • 00:07:41
envying the wrong people all these
  • 00:07:43
people that you envy these are the wrong
  • 00:07:45
people if you actually became like them
  • 00:07:49
    and here's the really counterintuitive
  • 00:07:52
and difficult to believe thing is that
  • 00:07:54
if you actually became like them you
  • 00:07:56
would be miserable you would be
  • 00:07:58
    absolutely miserable
  • 00:08:00
able and your life would be a
  • 00:08:03
mess even though on the surface you
  • 00:08:07
would be able to put on a good
  • 00:08:09
    appearance and everybody around you
  • 00:08:11
would think that well this guy really
  • 00:08:12
has it all together look at him I want
  • 00:08:15
    to be like
  • 00:08:16
him that's the illusion and it's a very
  • 00:08:20
    dangerous
  • 00:08:22
illusion there's also this Echo chamber
  • 00:08:25
effect in our culture because our
  • 00:08:28
culture feeds into this and it creates
  • 00:08:31
this illusion because it largely only
  • 00:08:33
    highlights external
  • 00:08:37
successes see uh the common mob doesn't
  • 00:08:41
    understand anything but material and
  • 00:08:43
gross things their minds are not subtle
  • 00:08:46
enough to to tap into the subtle aspects
  • 00:08:49
    of
  • 00:08:51
life and therefore they can't really
  • 00:08:53
    even start to self-actualize because
  • 00:08:55
    they're chasing
  • 00:08:57
    external gross things
  • 00:09:00
and our culture feeds into this because
  • 00:09:03
it's very easy to sell success and
  • 00:09:05
resell success that's why you have all
  • 00:09:08
these magazines like time magazines and
  • 00:09:10
Fortune 500 and all of these what do
  • 00:09:12
they do they package and sell the
  • 00:09:15
illusion of success by putting these
  • 00:09:17
people on their front covers and then
  • 00:09:19
writing articles about them how they're
  • 00:09:21
    successful this person this millionaire
  • 00:09:23
that billionaire how much money they
  • 00:09:24
made in the stock markets and what kind
  • 00:09:26
of company they founded none of that has
  • 00:09:28
anything to do with real success in life
  • 00:09:31
that's all a veneer of success but see
  • 00:09:34
it's easy to sell that because once
  • 00:09:36
you've got that thing going people are
  • 00:09:39
bought into that illusion now you can
  • 00:09:41
sell them courses seminars books they
  • 00:09:44
buy your magazine they read your
  • 00:09:45
    self-help books they read your
  • 00:09:47
biographies they take you as an expert
  • 00:09:49
as an authority in your field then they
  • 00:09:51
want to hire you as a consultant and so
  • 00:09:53
it just goes on and on and on this
  • 00:09:55
success gets resold this illusion gets
  • 00:09:57
resold over and over and over again and
  • 00:09:59
really what it is is just like a pyramid
  • 00:10:01
scheme of success because um it's only
  • 00:10:05
like the top of the pyramid that can
  • 00:10:08
survive because they're riding on the
  • 00:10:10
backs of the base of the pyramid which
  • 00:10:12
is the common masses which will never
  • 00:10:14
even rise to that level of success but
  • 00:10:16
the shocking thing is is that even if
  • 00:10:18
they do even if you do manage to go from
  • 00:10:20
the bottom of the pyramid all the way to
  • 00:10:22
the top you'll realize that the whole
  • 00:10:23
thing was a sham to begin with because
  • 00:10:26
even the people at the top are not
  • 00:10:27
    really happy
  • 00:10:30
but often times they don't know it
  • 00:10:31
because the mind is very tricky and of
  • 00:10:33
course when you're at the top to
  • 00:10:34
    maintain this whole structure you're
  • 00:10:36
going to have to lie to yourself in
  • 00:10:39
sneaky ways that you're not even
  • 00:10:41
conscious of yet that actually it's
  • 00:10:43
working and that actually you are happy
  • 00:10:46
it's very easy to trick yourself into
  • 00:10:48
thinking that you're happy when you have
  • 00:10:50
a lot of money and a lot of power and
  • 00:10:53
you're very good at manipulating your
  • 00:10:55
    circumstances very easy to trick
  • 00:10:57
    yourself into that
  • 00:11:00
it's very easy to Coast on Celebrity
  • 00:11:02
Status and to milk celebrity status and
  • 00:11:04
to turn any bit of recognition that you
  • 00:11:07
get or any publicity that you get into
  • 00:11:09
money and into more publicity and into
  • 00:11:11
more success and so this creates this
  • 00:11:13
    cycle of NeverEnding success
  • 00:11:17
chasing what we need to do if you really
  • 00:11:19
want to Unleash Your Potential in life
  • 00:11:22
and you want to really grow in the
  • 00:11:23
proper manner is to shatter this
  • 00:11:25
    illusion right
  • 00:11:27
now otherwise you will waste Decades of
  • 00:11:29
your life if not your entire life misled
  • 00:11:32
going in the opposite direction of where
  • 00:11:34
you need to go in order to really grow
  • 00:11:36
    and to be really
  • 00:11:38
fulfilled but this illusion is very
  • 00:11:40
difficult to shake it's not enough just
  • 00:11:41
to hear me say it once because like I
  • 00:11:44
    said it's it's it's an illusion that
  • 00:11:46
goes down to the marrow of your bones
  • 00:11:49
    it's a very deep cultural
  • 00:11:52
Paradigm that you are trying to shake
  • 00:11:56
here so what needs to happen is we need
  • 00:11:58
to come back to it over and over and
  • 00:12:00
over again have you thinking about it
  • 00:12:02
over and over and over again to
  • 00:12:03
undermine this illusion until you stop
  • 00:12:05
    believing in
  • 00:12:07
it so let's get to work first make a
  • 00:12:11
very sharp distinction in your mind
  • 00:12:12
    between success and happiness these
  • 00:12:15
    things are really
  • 00:12:18
    orthogonal orthogonal and often times
  • 00:12:20
they're actually opposite in that to
  • 00:12:23
become happy you're going to have to let
  • 00:12:24
go of success not Chase more success and
  • 00:12:27
that by chasing more success you're
  • 00:12:28
    actually making yourself
  • 00:12:31
    miserable it's also important to
  • 00:12:33
    understand the fundamentals of how
  • 00:12:34
happiness works because it works in very
  • 00:12:36
    counterintuitive
  • 00:12:38
ways what you need to know about
  • 00:12:40
happiness is that every human action is
  • 00:12:42
    always aimed towards maximizing
  • 00:12:44
happiness I don't care what it is it
  • 00:12:47
could be a terrorist it could be Hitler
  • 00:12:49
it could be a rapist it could be your
  • 00:12:52
politician uh pick anyone you hate Whose
  • 00:12:55
actions you despise and realize for a
  • 00:12:58
moment just for a moment right now that
  • 00:13:00
they are actually acting in what they
  • 00:13:02
believe will produce the most happiness
  • 00:13:04
    for
  • 00:13:07
    them hard to
  • 00:13:09
believe so why then do they act in such
  • 00:13:12
Stupid Ways well for the same way uh for
  • 00:13:16
the same reason that you act in Stupid
  • 00:13:19
Ways because from the inside it's very
  • 00:13:22
difficult to see that your actions
  • 00:13:25
    actually aren't moving you towards
  • 00:13:27
happiness because like I said happiness
  • 00:13:29
is a very counterintuitive thing it's
  • 00:13:30
easy to lose track of when your actions
  • 00:13:33
    stop working and producing
  • 00:13:35
    happiness because the success will
  • 00:13:40
    seduce
  • 00:13:41
you see you start off planning your
  • 00:13:45
actions to maximize your happiness and
  • 00:13:47
your ha and your actions and your
  • 00:13:49
happiness are like this they're together
  • 00:13:53
and you sort of assume that that's how
  • 00:13:54
it's going to keep being but then you
  • 00:13:56
start taking more actions more actions
  • 00:13:57
you start getting a little bit of
  • 00:13:58
success you start assuming that oh
  • 00:14:00
success is the same as happiness and so
  • 00:14:01
these things start to drift apart though
  • 00:14:03
you don't really notice that they're
  • 00:14:04
drifting apart your happiness is going
  • 00:14:06
one way your success is taking you
  • 00:14:08
another way but see the happiness the
  • 00:14:11
    happiness is a
  • 00:14:12
very abstract and air fairy thing it's
  • 00:14:15
    intangible it's
  • 00:14:17
subtle it's going this direction your
  • 00:14:20
success is a gross material thing it's
  • 00:14:22
money or bank account it's cars it's
  • 00:14:24
houses it's your growing business it's
  • 00:14:26
how many people know your name it's your
  • 00:14:28
audience your number of subscribers you
  • 00:14:30
have all this and it's going this
  • 00:14:31
direction you see and you just assume
  • 00:14:33
that oh well this this is the same thing
  • 00:14:35
as this because as you're getting this
  • 00:14:37
it's sort of addictive and it's
  • 00:14:39
stimulating right oh I got more
  • 00:14:41
subscribers like oh I got more money in
  • 00:14:43
my bank account I got a new car oh all
  • 00:14:45
that's addictive and oh I got a new
  • 00:14:46
girlfriend look she came to me because
  • 00:14:48
she saw my success oh okay and so now
  • 00:14:51
you think oh now I'm really living the
  • 00:14:52
good life and you're living into this
  • 00:14:54
illusion of success and now by that
  • 00:14:56
    point you're
  • 00:14:58
completely 180° now in the opposite
  • 00:15:01
    direction of
  • 00:15:02
happiness and the trick with this is is
  • 00:15:05
that the reason this is such an easy
  • 00:15:08
    separation that happens is
  • 00:15:11
because happiness what is happiness it's
  • 00:15:14
such an Airy fairy thing it's an emotion
  • 00:15:16
    it's a
  • 00:15:17
    feeling and many
  • 00:15:19
people live their life as though they're
  • 00:15:22
very rational and pragmatic so a
  • 00:15:24
rational pragmatic person when he puts
  • 00:15:27
on the scale has happiness over here
  • 00:15:29
this Airy fairy feeling of happiness and
  • 00:15:32
then a car a house lots of stocks money
  • 00:15:37
in your bank account and a hot
  • 00:15:39
girlfriend or a husband and a family and
  • 00:15:43
and vacations and uh fancy Italian
  • 00:15:46
restaurants and all this stuff over here
  • 00:15:48
which one is he going to Value
  • 00:15:51
more you see it takes a lot of wisdom to
  • 00:15:54
Value this over all of this
  • 00:15:59
    you see
  • 00:16:00
    that takes a lot of
  • 00:16:04
wisdom um your problem in life is not
  • 00:16:08
    that you lack
  • 00:16:09
success that is not why you're
  • 00:16:13
unfulfilled that is a huge part of the
  • 00:16:15
solution we tell ourselves that man if I
  • 00:16:18
was just doing a little better for
  • 00:16:20
myself that would really do it for me in
  • 00:16:23
life my life would be great that is not
  • 00:16:26
the problem the problem is that you
  • 00:16:28
    fundament mentally misunderstand how
  • 00:16:31
happiness works that's the real problem
  • 00:16:34
because if you really understood what
  • 00:16:37
happiness is and how happiness works you
  • 00:16:39
would not be Under This Spell mesmerized
  • 00:16:43
by this illusion of success chasing
  • 00:16:49
it success is largely about manipulating
  • 00:16:53
    reality to fit
  • 00:16:56
you that's what success is about out
  • 00:16:59
that's how you acquire success you want
  • 00:17:01
a lot of success become a really good
  • 00:17:03
manipulator of reality and you will have
  • 00:17:06
    massive
  • 00:17:08
success happiness is the opposite of
  • 00:17:11
that it's about surrendering yourself to
  • 00:17:17
reality this is where people go wrong is
  • 00:17:19
    they misunderstand
  • 00:17:22
    this surrendering yourself to reality
  • 00:17:26
and not getting the things you
  • 00:17:29
want see you think that to be happy you
  • 00:17:33
need to get all the things you want and
  • 00:17:36
the more you go and you pursue these
  • 00:17:37
things and you get them eventually you
  • 00:17:39
will realize what I'm telling you here
  • 00:17:41
now which is that actually happiness is
  • 00:17:45
about being okay and happy with exactly
  • 00:17:51
whatever you have even if you have
  • 00:17:53
    nothing
  • 00:18:00
now that's easy to say the trick is how
  • 00:18:02
    do you start to embody
  • 00:18:04
    this you might think well
  • 00:18:07
Leo uh this is all kind of basic stuff I
  • 00:18:09
mean why aren't you talking about more
  • 00:18:11
advanced topics this is such a basic
  • 00:18:13
topic this is like a topic for newbies
  • 00:18:15
no no no this is a very fundamental
  • 00:18:18
    topic even if you're pursuing
  • 00:18:20
Enlightenment even if you think you're
  • 00:18:21
    doing all this Advanced personal
  • 00:18:23
    development
  • 00:18:25
stuff you're probably still wrapped up
  • 00:18:28
    in the illusion of
  • 00:18:29
success I know because to a large degree
  • 00:18:32
    I still am and that's something I
  • 00:18:34
struggle to shed every single day it's a
  • 00:18:36
    real
  • 00:18:38
challenge you need to really deeply
  • 00:18:41
    grasp what I'm saying
  • 00:18:44
    here that happiness is about
  • 00:18:46
    surrendering yourself to reality not
  • 00:18:49
about acquiring things or even acquiring
  • 00:18:53
what you might call the good things or
  • 00:18:57
the spiritual things like a loving
  • 00:18:59
relationship if I acquire a loving
  • 00:19:01
relationship then I'll be happy that's
  • 00:19:03
better than acquiring money no that's
  • 00:19:05
still a very wrong-headed approach to
  • 00:19:09
happiness happiness is not something you
  • 00:19:11
    acquire It's Your
  • 00:19:13
Capacity to surrender yourself to this
  • 00:19:16
    very moment right
  • 00:19:20
now you need to grasp this to such a
  • 00:19:23
deep level that your entire life starts
  • 00:19:26
    to
  • 00:19:27
unravel and the reason your life is
  • 00:19:29
going to start to unravel and it's going
  • 00:19:31
to be scary is because you spent
  • 00:19:34
probably 20 or 30 years of your life if
  • 00:19:37
    not
  • 00:19:38
more building this entire house of cards
  • 00:19:42
of success on this assumption that it
  • 00:19:46
    would make you
  • 00:19:48
fulfilled and it's very difficult to
  • 00:19:50
admit to yourself that it's not going to
  • 00:19:53
work so when you hear me talking about
  • 00:19:56
it right now you might very easily be in
  • 00:19:58
Den about it not just for a week or a
  • 00:20:01
month but maybe for the next 10 years
  • 00:20:03
you will resist what I'm saying until
  • 00:20:07
finally you have enough of this illusion
  • 00:20:09
of success and it becomes so sour you
  • 00:20:13
get so disenchanted with it that you
  • 00:20:15
come back and you're really able to
  • 00:20:18
deeply grasp what I'm saying here and
  • 00:20:20
    when that happens that will
  • 00:20:23
be the beginning of true growth for you
  • 00:20:30
that will be the beginning and you will
  • 00:20:33
realize how much time you've wasted
  • 00:20:34
decades have been wasted just to get to
  • 00:20:37
the beginning of this path that's why
  • 00:20:40
this topic is so important I really need
  • 00:20:43
you to understand that you can never
  • 00:20:46
    ever ever never
  • 00:20:49
    ever have
  • 00:20:52
happiness happiness is not something you
  • 00:20:54
have it's not something you acquire you
  • 00:20:56
    can only be happy right
  • 00:21:02
    now with exactly what
  • 00:21:05
    is without manipulating what
  • 00:21:08
is without trying to make it
  • 00:21:12
better without trying to make it fit
  • 00:21:14
your desires happiness is about making
  • 00:21:17
your desires fit reality and not about
  • 00:21:21
making reality fit your desires you see
  • 00:21:24
how it's exactly the opposite of what
  • 00:21:26
we're taught by our culture it is
  • 00:21:29
and no wonder then that so many people
  • 00:21:32
are not truly happy even though they
  • 00:21:35
    project a veneer of
  • 00:21:38
happiness but deep down inside they're
  • 00:21:46
Hollow what you really want in your life
  • 00:21:49
is you want to develop a connection to
  • 00:21:50
being and being is that which is right
  • 00:21:53
now whether there's an itch in your ass
  • 00:21:57
or on your foot or something's going
  • 00:22:00
wrong with your kids or you didn't get
  • 00:22:02
the new job you wanted you didn't get
  • 00:22:04
the promotion you wanted or your car
  • 00:22:06
broke down you got a flat tire or you
  • 00:22:09
have a health problem or uh you're
  • 00:22:12
running low on money whatever your
  • 00:22:14
situation is if you're connected with
  • 00:22:17
being you can be happy through
  • 00:22:20
    that regardless of that that's
  • 00:22:23
    unconditional
  • 00:22:25
happiness that's being happy all the
  • 00:22:28
    time
  • 00:22:30
so just think about this do you want to
  • 00:22:33
    be conditionally happy or
  • 00:22:34
    unconditionally
  • 00:22:36
    happy which do you
  • 00:22:40
want to be conditionally happy means
  • 00:22:43
that your happiness depends upon success
  • 00:22:46
    Freedom money your comfort the
  • 00:22:48
    possessions you have and everything
  • 00:22:51
    basically going your
  • 00:22:53
way think of how fragile that is does
  • 00:22:57
that strike you as a wise strategy for
  • 00:22:59
living life to be conditionally happy to
  • 00:23:02
be putting yourself further and further
  • 00:23:04
    into a situation of conditional
  • 00:23:07
happiness does that sound like a good
  • 00:23:10
life does that sound like a smart
  • 00:23:12
    investment into your
  • 00:23:14
future to invest a lot of time and
  • 00:23:16
energy into that because you will invest
  • 00:23:18
    years into
  • 00:23:19
this or does it strike you as a better
  • 00:23:22
investment to invest that time and
  • 00:23:24
    energy into developing your connection
  • 00:23:26
    to being
  • 00:23:28
such that you can be happy without
  • 00:23:33
relying on success Freedom money or
  • 00:23:39
Comfort think about this right now think
  • 00:23:41
about it be very conscious here you have
  • 00:23:45
to actually think through the logic of
  • 00:23:47
    this because that's how something's
  • 00:23:48
going to shift in your mind don't just
  • 00:23:52
agree with me and just say oh yeah yeah
  • 00:23:54
I already know that I already know that
  • 00:23:55
I already know money won't make me happy
  • 00:23:57
no at what level of depth do you know
  • 00:24:01
it cuz when you really know it your
  • 00:24:04
whole life will change all your actions
  • 00:24:07
    all your motivations will change
  • 00:24:09
radically if you really grasp what's
  • 00:24:11
    being said
  • 00:24:14
here this is not easy stuff to to grasp
  • 00:24:18
if someone told me this stuff five years
  • 00:24:21
ago it would just go in one ear and out
  • 00:24:24
the other it's taken a lot of work for
  • 00:24:26
me to get to this point where these
  • 00:24:28
things really resonate with me and then
  • 00:24:30
    I'm passionate about communicating them
  • 00:24:32
to you because I want them to resonate
  • 00:24:33
in you as well but um if you haven't
  • 00:24:36
laid your foundation um I'm worried that
  • 00:24:40
it'll go in one ear and out the
  • 00:24:43
other now you might say but Leo getting
  • 00:24:46
    X whatever X's money
  • 00:24:49
    sex husband marriage whatever kids
  • 00:24:52
    getting X will make me
  • 00:24:54
happier I know that in the past these
  • 00:24:56
things have made me happier I get
  • 00:24:57
something I like and then I'm
  • 00:25:00
happier look very closely at that it
  • 00:25:03
only seems so the keyword here being
  • 00:25:07
seems it seems so but really this
  • 00:25:12
getting X is like a drug you get X and
  • 00:25:17
it boosts your mood a little bit but
  • 00:25:19
then a week later you're just back down
  • 00:25:21
the Baseline and need another hit and
  • 00:25:24
another hit another hit another hit
  • 00:25:28
but in the long run it never works
  • 00:25:31
    you're just
  • 00:25:32
delaying uh the real inner growth that
  • 00:25:34
needs to happen in order to develop your
  • 00:25:36
    connection with being you're just
  • 00:25:37
putting that off till another day to
  • 00:25:39
another day to another day because you
  • 00:25:40
keep telling yourself no just one more
  • 00:25:43
thing one extra thing let me just
  • 00:25:44
acquire that house or that girlfriend or
  • 00:25:47
uh that yacht or that whatever and that
  • 00:25:51
that that will do it for me if I just
  • 00:25:53
    get that one
  • 00:25:55
thing but then notice you've been doing
  • 00:25:57
that your whole life and it hasn't
  • 00:25:58
really worked and you keep saying no no
  • 00:26:00
I just need that one extra thing this
  • 00:26:02
    time I know it'll really
  • 00:26:06
work do you really think it'll
  • 00:26:10
work think about it really take a look
  • 00:26:13
at all the stuff you've acquired in your
  • 00:26:15
life and how it hasn't really made you
  • 00:26:18
fulfilled and in fact the more you
  • 00:26:20
    acquire the more miserable you
  • 00:26:23
become because success is very addictive
  • 00:26:28
one success is Never Enough it never
  • 00:26:31
satisfies notice this this is a general
  • 00:26:33
    principle of
  • 00:26:35
Life what this creates is a never-ending
  • 00:26:38
    cycle of achievement constantly
  • 00:26:40
acquiring more and more and more and
  • 00:26:45
    more
  • 00:26:46
but when you're going in an orthogonal
  • 00:26:50
direction to where you need to be going
  • 00:26:52
you're never going to get there can you
  • 00:26:53
see that if you need to go north and
  • 00:26:56
you're going east west you're never
  • 00:26:59
going to get North you see that's the
  • 00:27:02
problem it's very tricky you tell
  • 00:27:05
yourself oh well if I just keep going
  • 00:27:06
east a little bit more eventually I'll
  • 00:27:08
get North no you won't you're just going
  • 00:27:11
to go East you're never going to get
  • 00:27:15
North success is very addictive because
  • 00:27:17
it's very hard to say no to
  • 00:27:20
success notice this as well when you're
  • 00:27:23
doing well and people around you are
  • 00:27:25
telling you how well you're doing and
  • 00:27:26
then the world and the economy is
  • 00:27:28
rewarding you for doing so well it's
  • 00:27:32
    ridiculously easy to convince yourself
  • 00:27:34
that this is the right path and that you
  • 00:27:36
should just do more of it and more and
  • 00:27:39
more and more and more and that's
  • 00:27:41
    exactly what these Millionaires and
  • 00:27:42
    billionaires and these Venture
  • 00:27:44
capitalists and Silicon Valley CEOs and
  • 00:27:48
the Donald Trumps of the world that's
  • 00:27:49
exactly the game that they're playing is
  • 00:27:52
this game they can never say no to
  • 00:27:54
success and then they're hooked on it
  • 00:27:56
    it's their drug
  • 00:27:58
and some of our best people our
  • 00:28:01
brightest minds are lost to this trap of
  • 00:28:04
    success and they are lost
  • 00:28:06
    forever
  • 00:28:08
forever this this absorbs and sucks in
  • 00:28:12
    your entire
  • 00:28:13
life you know a drug addiction can take
  • 00:28:16
up quite a bit of your time and waste a
  • 00:28:18
lot of energy but a success addiction
  • 00:28:21
nothing eats up time and energy like a
  • 00:28:23
success addiction it'll eat up decades
  • 00:28:29
and also once you acquire the success
  • 00:28:31
and the money what are you going to do
  • 00:28:33
with it you're going to use it to buy
  • 00:28:36
Comfort aren't you and comfort is
  • 00:28:40
extremely addictive as well so the
  • 00:28:43
success feeds comfort and then the
  • 00:28:45
Comfort feeds the desire for more
  • 00:28:47
    Comfort which then necessitates pursuing
  • 00:28:49
more success and so your life becomes
  • 00:28:52
    about maximizing
  • 00:28:55
    Comfort without realizing that
  • 00:28:58
maximizing Comfort is not how you
  • 00:29:01
develop fulfillment in life actually you
  • 00:29:03
    get yourself more and more
  • 00:29:06
stuck and then this is why people get
  • 00:29:08
    really depressed and ultimately suicidal
  • 00:29:11
is because they they realize that all
  • 00:29:14
this this time that they spent
  • 00:29:16
    developing their comfort and acquiring
  • 00:29:17
all this stuff all this success has
  • 00:29:20
really led to um a miserable
  • 00:29:25
life now with that said does this mean
  • 00:29:28
that you should be a lazy
  • 00:29:31
loser and of course the answer is
  • 00:29:35
    no success principles are still
  • 00:29:37
    important to
  • 00:29:39
learn there's value in pursuing success
  • 00:29:42
and that it does build some discipline
  • 00:29:44
in you and it teaches you what does work
  • 00:29:47
in the world what doesn't work in the
  • 00:29:48
world it um develops some robustness
  • 00:29:52
within you so those are all good things
  • 00:29:56
uh the only thing you need to do is you
  • 00:29:58
just need to apply these principles of
  • 00:30:00
success to the right areas in life what
  • 00:30:03
    I would call the wise
  • 00:30:05
areas like if you applied the principles
  • 00:30:07
of success not to business for example
  • 00:30:09
    but to The Pursuit Of
  • 00:30:12
Truth or to The Pursuit Of
  • 00:30:15
Love or the the pursuit of
  • 00:30:19
being or the pursuit of authentic
  • 00:30:21
    relationships and authentic
  • 00:30:24
    communication which has virtually
  • 00:30:26
    nothing to do with
  • 00:30:29
    uh typical marriages or typical
  • 00:30:32
    relationships
  • 00:30:34
um these would be good places to apply
  • 00:30:37
the principles of success that you have
  • 00:30:40
learned from running your business or
  • 00:30:42
from being successful in pickup or from
  • 00:30:44
    being successful um with whatever
  • 00:30:48
else see but these are much less
  • 00:30:51
tangible things and so if you've been
  • 00:30:54
addicted to success it's going to be
  • 00:30:55
very hard for you to to make that switch
  • 00:30:57
from going from something that's so
  • 00:30:59
gross like pursuing money or business
  • 00:31:01
success or success with women to now
  • 00:31:05
pursuing something like success in truth
  • 00:31:12
    seeking but that's the
  • 00:31:15
solution that's what we're talking about
  • 00:31:17
here we're talking about making a really
  • 00:31:20
    big shift
  • 00:31:23
in what you're motivated towards in
  • 00:31:26
life and why you're motivated towards it
  • 00:31:30
    by understanding the deeper dynamics
  • 00:31:32
    that work
  • 00:31:34
here you need to deeply grasp that what
  • 00:31:38
you want is happiness not success
  • 00:31:43
itself and then when you grasp that then
  • 00:31:47
try to convince yourself to pursue the
  • 00:31:49
    happiness directly eliminate all the
  • 00:31:53
    side
  • 00:31:54
roads all the detours go straight for
  • 00:31:57
the happiness and see what that means
  • 00:32:00
for your life it might mean some radical
  • 00:32:04
stuff don't get sidetracked by the
  • 00:32:06
    parade of
  • 00:32:07
chimps the parade of chimps are all
  • 00:32:10
these people these chimps and Suits
  • 00:32:13
these chimps and tuxedos that you see on
  • 00:32:16
the cover of Time Magazine who are put
  • 00:32:19
up there as these successful chimps that
  • 00:32:22
    you're supposed to
  • 00:32:23
emulate see that for what it is it's
  • 00:32:26
just chimps in suits chimps with dollar
  • 00:32:29
bills chimps that know how to manipulate
  • 00:32:31
the stock market chimps that know how to
  • 00:32:36
start a new mobile app or some new
  • 00:32:38
    Venture Capital project in Silicon
  • 00:32:41
    Valley but they're nevertheless chimps
  • 00:32:44
these are not developed human beings
  • 00:32:46
these are not high Consciousness human
  • 00:32:48
beings you're envying the wrong people
  • 00:32:51
who you should be envying are the monks
  • 00:32:53
and the yogis and the Saints not these
  • 00:32:56
    guys
  • 00:32:59
so keep questioning this culture of
  • 00:33:01
    success that you've been indoctrinated
  • 00:33:04
with I've been indoctrinated with it too
  • 00:33:06
and I've spent a lot of time questioning
  • 00:33:07
it questioning it and the deeper I go
  • 00:33:10
into my uh spiritual work the uh the
  • 00:33:13
more I realize how hollow it is and how
  • 00:33:15
it just is just a parade of chimps and
  • 00:33:18
just because everyone's in the parade
  • 00:33:19
and the parade makes a lot of noise and
  • 00:33:21
it's very flashy it sounds like hey I
  • 00:33:23
    should be part of that
  • 00:33:25
parade but um the more I the more I
  • 00:33:28
realize that man I've wasted so much
  • 00:33:30
time being part of that parade and that
  • 00:33:32
    it's time to call it
  • 00:33:35
quits do that questioning until you stop
  • 00:33:38
believing in this this whole illusion
  • 00:33:40
needs to be shattered when you do that
  • 00:33:43
you will be on track for some of the
  • 00:33:46
    biggest growth that you've ever
