Cronología

  • 00:00:00 - 00:07:11

The video discusses Pakistan's potential nuclear involvement in the ongoing conflict in West Asia, particularly in relation to Iran and Israel. A top Iranian general claims that Pakistan has pledged to retaliate with nuclear force against Israel if Israel attacks Iran. While Pakistan's foreign minister denies this claim, the situation raises questions about Pakistan's motives and alliances. Pakistan's support for Iran may stem from its geographical proximity, political considerations, and the influence of China, which has strong ties with both nations. The video also explores the implications of Pakistan's nuclear capabilities and the likelihood of them using such weapons, concluding that while they can technically strike Israel, it would be irrational for them to do so.

  • 00:00:37
Add Pakistan to any problem and it
  • 00:00:39
becomes worse. And it's no different in
  • 00:00:41
West Asia. Islamabad is making some
  • 00:00:43
worrying moves. They're the only Muslim
  • 00:00:45
    country with a nuclear bomb.
  • 00:00:48
And looks like they're in the mood to
  • 00:00:50
share it. Says who? A top Iranian
  • 00:00:53
general. He says Pakistan has given them
  • 00:00:56
a nuclear pledge. If Israel drops a nuke
  • 00:01:00
on Iran, Pakistan will drop a nuke on
  • 00:01:02
Israel. This is what he said. Listen to
  • 00:01:04
    this.
  • 00:01:07
Pakistan will drop a nuclear bomb on
  • 00:01:09
Israel if Israel drops a nuclear bomb on
  • 00:01:11
    Iran.
  • 00:01:14
That's what Iran is saying. What is
  • 00:01:16
    Pakistan saying? Well, their foreign
  • 00:01:18
minister spoke in parliament today and
  • 00:01:20
    he categorically denied it.
  • 00:01:39
But this whole episode is quite
  • 00:01:40
    confusing. For starters, why would
  • 00:01:42
Pakistan make such a pledge? If they did
  • 00:01:45
not, why would Iran lie about it and
  • 00:01:48
that too on their national television?
  • 00:01:51
To understand that, let's look at
  • 00:01:52
Pakistan's position. What stakes do they
  • 00:01:54
have in this war? Like most Muslim
  • 00:01:57
    nations, Pakistan does not recognize
  • 00:01:59
Israel. They also condemn the strikes on
  • 00:02:01
Friday. Then on Saturday, Prime Minister
  • 00:02:03
Shabb Sharif spoke to Iran's president.
  • 00:02:05
And here's what he said later. I'm
  • 00:02:08
    quoting, "I expressed Pakistan's
  • 00:02:11
    unwavering solidarity with the brotherly
  • 00:02:14
people of Iran in the face of Israel's
  • 00:02:15
    unprovoked aggression. strongly condemn
  • 00:02:18
the violation of Iran's sovereignity and
  • 00:02:20
    territorial integrity and affront to
  • 00:02:22
international law and the UN charter.
  • 00:02:25
Iran has every right to self-defense.
  • 00:02:30
It's funny to hear this from Pakistan.
  • 00:02:32
    Nonetheless, it's a very strong
  • 00:02:34
statement, much stronger than what we
  • 00:02:36
heard from Arab nations. Islamabad has
  • 00:02:38
two concerns here. The first is a
  • 00:02:40
spillover. Pakistan shares a big border
  • 00:02:42
with Iran. It's more than 900 km long.
  • 00:02:45
And if things escalate that could become
  • 00:02:48
a problem for Islamabad which is why
  • 00:02:49
they have shut the border. Pakistanis
  • 00:02:52
cannot cross over into Iran anymore. The
  • 00:02:54
border is sealed. Even flights to Iran
  • 00:02:57
and Iraq have been suspended. So that is
  • 00:02:59
the first concern. A spillover. The
  • 00:03:02
second concern is political. Pakistan is
  • 00:03:04
very close to the US and its Arab
  • 00:03:06
allies. But the Arab world does not like
  • 00:03:08
Iran. Iran is a Shia Muslim country and
  • 00:03:12
Arab nations are largely Sunni. So
  • 00:03:14
Pakistan always kept its distance from
  • 00:03:16
Thran. Plus they have their own
  • 00:03:18
    bilateral problems. Iran says Pakistan
  • 00:03:21
is shielding Balo terror groups. This
  • 00:03:24
led to a brief flash point last year. In
  • 00:03:26
fact Iran launched air strikes on terror
  • 00:03:29
camps in Pakistan and Pakistan hit back
  • 00:03:31
with strikes of its own. And at that
  • 00:03:33
    point this relationship looked very
  • 00:03:35
    weak.
  • 00:03:37
So what has changed? Why is Islamabad
  • 00:03:40
    standing with Iran?
  • 00:03:42
Well, there are three possible reasons.
  • 00:03:44
Number one, the China factor. Beijing
  • 00:03:46
has good ties with both these countries,
  • 00:03:48
with both Islamabad and Thran. They
  • 00:03:49
signed a 25-year deal with Iran. That
  • 00:03:52
was in 2021. They they signed a 25 year
  • 00:03:55
year deal. The goal was to invest $400
  • 00:03:58
    billion in Iran's economy,
  • 00:04:02
which is gold dust for them, the
  • 00:04:03
Iranians. China too stands to gain from
  • 00:04:06
this deal. They're hoping to get a
  • 00:04:07
foothold in West Asia, but for that, the
  • 00:04:10
    Iranian regime must survive.
  • 00:04:13
Next is factor number two to rally
  • 00:04:16
    popular support at home.
  • 00:04:19
    The Pakistani public has always
  • 00:04:21
    supported Palestine. Last year they
  • 00:04:22
    began boycotting brands linked to
  • 00:04:24
Israel. So it's politically savvy to
  • 00:04:27
stand with Iran. Islamabad can show
  • 00:04:29
itself to be a defender of Muslims.
  • 00:04:33
Which brings us to reason number three
  • 00:04:34
to create a rift between Iran and India.
  • 00:04:38
India too enjoys close ties with Iran.
  • 00:04:41
But New Delhi has been neutral in its
  • 00:04:43
    war in this war.
  • 00:04:46
India did not condemn Israel's air
  • 00:04:47
strikes on Friday. Perhaps Pakistan is
  • 00:04:49
tempted to capitalize on that to drive
  • 00:04:52
Iran away from New Delhi. Whatever the
  • 00:04:54
    reason, this episode raises two
  • 00:04:56
questions. Can Pakistan nuke Israel? And
  • 00:04:59
will Pakistan nuke Israel? The first
  • 00:05:02
answer is yes, they can do it. Pakistan
  • 00:05:04
Shaheen 3 missile has a range of 2,700
  • 00:05:07
km. But technically they can strike
  • 00:05:09
anywhere in Israel if they want to. As
  • 00:05:12
for the second question, the answer is
  • 00:05:14
no. It would be ludicrous for Pakistan
  • 00:05:17
to even think about launching a nuke at
  • 00:05:19
    Israel.
  • 00:05:21
Chances are this claim was more about
  • 00:05:22
deterrence to sort of raise the stakes
  • 00:05:25
    for Israel.
  • 00:05:27
We would advise against it though. This
  • 00:05:30
is a country that could not defend
  • 00:05:31
itself. How can they possibly defend
  • 00:05:34
    someone else?
