    um and what I've really learned is that

    what and the how to scale those are the

    three things that you need to scale your

    of course it was not always like that

    and so to give you a little bit of

    backstory uh back to 2016. uh this was

    me and Alex uh that was when we made ads

    because we met and we started this
  • 00:01:56
    company called gym launch which it was
  • 00:01:58
    not a company back then it was me and
  • 00:02:00
    Alex uh learning how to do Facebook ads
  • 00:02:03
    and knowing how to sell people into gyms
  • 00:02:05
    and teaching them how to retain those
  • 00:02:06
    customers and so what we actually used
  • 00:02:08
    to do is we would literally fly out to a
  • 00:02:10
    gym like he would be in Virginia I would
  • 00:02:13
    be in Hawaii we would turn on the
  • 00:02:14
    marketing for them and then we would
  • 00:02:16
    literally sit at their front desk and we
  • 00:02:17
    would sell people into their gym for
  • 00:02:19
    them so like then we call each other
  • 00:02:20
    every night and be like how made you
  • 00:02:22
    sell today like I got 30 I got 20 I got
  • 00:02:24
    15 like just High transactional sales
  • 00:02:27
    into these gyms and we did that for
  • 00:02:30
    about 11 months uh flying Spirit living
  • 00:02:33
    out of the Extended Stay living out of
  • 00:02:34
    our cars sleeping at clients houses we
  • 00:02:37
    were broke we had no money
  • 00:02:39
    and we started to gain a little bit of
  • 00:02:41
    success
  • 00:02:42
    um and so we thought to ourselves you
  • 00:02:44
    know we're exhausted looked like [ __ ]
  • 00:02:46
    I've aged like five years at this point
  • 00:02:48
    and we probably should try and hire some
  • 00:02:51
    people to do this for us and so what we
  • 00:02:53
    did was we decided let's not hire one
  • 00:02:56
    sales person let's just hire six at once
  • 00:02:59
    and so we hired six sales guys to fly
  • 00:03:02
    out to these next locations and so we
  • 00:03:04
    booked up six gyms the next month to
  • 00:03:07
    basically fill them up and they were
  • 00:03:09
    like okay they're gonna do what we just
  • 00:03:10
    did
  • 00:03:11
    and so we did that and it was a little
  • 00:03:15
    painful
  • 00:03:15
    um but we made it work and we started to
  • 00:03:17
    gain a little bit of traction but we
  • 00:03:19
    started to realize that this model
  • 00:03:21
    wasn't necessarily going to work
  • 00:03:24
    um in fact we continue to have endless
  • 00:03:26
    problems we almost went bankrupt twice
  • 00:03:29
    and we thought maybe this isn't the
  • 00:03:31
    right model
  • 00:03:33
    so we switched the model to licensing
  • 00:03:36
    which is if any of you guys know us or
  • 00:03:38
    our backstory that's what gym launches
  • 00:03:39
    today it's a licensing model and so you
  • 00:03:42
    know we switched to licensing which was
  • 00:03:44
    basically we'll teach people how to do
  • 00:03:46
    what we were doing we're not going to
  • 00:03:48
    fly out to gyms anymore we're going to
  • 00:03:49
    teach those gyms how to do what we had
  • 00:03:51
    just done
  • 00:03:52
    and so we switched to the licensing
  • 00:03:54
    and we finally started to gain some
  • 00:03:56
    traction like it finally felt like I
  • 00:03:58
    wasn't under water we weren't like going
  • 00:04:00
    to go broke every other second you know
  • 00:04:02
    I wasn't anxious all the time
  • 00:04:04
    and then we hit a point where we
  • 00:04:06
    couldn't scale so like we gained a
  • 00:04:08
    little bit of success and it felt like
  • 00:04:09
    things were going right but it was just
  • 00:04:11
    like why are we not growing more you
  • 00:04:13
    know we wanted the fast growth we wanted
  • 00:04:15
    to be like a rocket ship
  • 00:04:16
    and we continue to bang our heads
  • 00:04:18
    against the wall trying to figure out
  • 00:04:19
    like is it the marketing is it the
  • 00:04:21
    funnel do we need to tweak the offer is
  • 00:04:22
    it the sales like what do we need to do
  • 00:04:25
    and we couldn't break past about 400 000
  • 00:04:27
    a month
  • 00:04:29
    and so after about two months of setting
  • 00:04:31
    sales targets and not hitting them

    something occurred to me

    which was that the reason that our sales
  • 00:04:37
    targets weren't being hit was not
  • 00:04:39
    because of our marketing or a funnel or
  • 00:04:41
    a lack of client acquisition like we had
  • 00:04:43
    a super strong client acquisition arm
  • 00:04:46
    it was actually due to capacity and
  • 00:04:48
    limitations on our sales team
  • 00:04:51
    and so we actually couldn't hire fast
  • 00:04:53
    enough to even contact all the people
  • 00:04:56
    that were opting in for gym launch that
  • 00:04:58
    was actually the issue like when I
  • 00:05:00
    logged into the CRM I was like we have
  • 00:05:02
    hundreds of leads sitting here that
  • 00:05:03
    nobody's ever contacted
  • 00:05:06
    and just when I thought that I was
  • 00:05:07
    starting to understand the issue one of
  • 00:05:09
    our reps quit I was like [ __ ]
  • 00:05:12
    [ __ ] sucks
  • 00:05:13
    and so I called my mentor who I'll call

    Bob and I was like Bob I [ __ ] hate my

    life what do I do like we finally found

    some success I don't know what to do I

    don't know how to actually scale this

    business like I don't understand what's

    wrong like we have this super strong

    marketing and super strong sales like

    we're tweaked the funnel and we did this

    but like I just I don't see anything

    really understand like I think there's

    managed a single person in my life I

    so Bob was like well what's your talent

    and so what I want to explain is that

    everybody pretty much I would assume

    maybe I don't know gets this lead

    guys get that is that familiar simple

    enough right that's a funnel that most

    people use to acquire clients right

    that's the simplest way I could put it

    but what about Talent acquisition who

    Talent acquisition if you think about a

    lead you can think about application

    and that was really the light bulb

    moment for me is when I put those two

    funnels side by side and I was like oh

    so as soon as we paired Talent

    it was not guys we did not even change

    our funnel when we were doing four

    million a month it was the same funnel

    the same sales process that it was when

    all we did was add in the second funnel

    and then we lived happily ever after

    obviously not it's pretty good though

    um but we did realize that Talent

    through that barrier and that was what

    we needed at that point in time

    and so here's a thought experiment for
