Chronologie

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:34

The speaker introduces the main theme: the concept of representation in culture and media studies, particularly focusing on visual representation. They emphasize that representation is more complex than it appears, as it involves the saturation of culture by images and the varied roles these images play in communication globally. The opening points establish that while representation typically means to depict or symbolize something that exists, there's also the idea of representation standing in for people or concepts, highlighting a duality in its meaning. The speaker plans to explore how media practices shape meaning through representation, suggesting a gap exists between the true meaning of an event or object and how it is presented through various media.

just let me uh say what the main theme
  • 00:00:15
of what I'm going to say today is I'm
  • 00:00:18
going to talk about the the notion of
  • 00:00:20
representation which is a very common
  • 00:00:23
Concept in culture studies and in media
  • 00:00:26
studies kinds of work uh but I want to
  • 00:00:29
explore the uh the idea a little bit and
  • 00:00:32
I want to try and say something about
  • 00:00:34
    how I understand representation working
  • 00:00:37
    and and why it's a um it's a more
  • 00:00:41
difficult and more complex subject than
  • 00:00:43
it appears to begin with uh I'm talking
  • 00:00:47
    about largely visual representation or
  • 00:00:50
I'm going to the examples I'm going to
  • 00:00:51
try to site are from visual
  • 00:00:53
representation but I think what I'm
  • 00:00:55
going to say uh has a bearing on the
  • 00:00:58
    practices of representation in
  • 00:01:01
    general uh I choose visual
  • 00:01:04
representation because it's a kind of
  • 00:01:06
cliche to say that uh uh uh in the
  • 00:01:09
modern world uh our culture is saturated
  • 00:01:13
by the image in a variety of different
  • 00:01:15
forms the image itself whether moving or
  • 00:01:18
still and whether transmitted by a
  • 00:01:20
variety of different media seems to be a
  • 00:01:24
    to have become the privileged
  • 00:01:26
sign of late modern culture culture and
  • 00:01:30
late modern culture is not only that
  • 00:01:32
culture which one finds in the advanced
  • 00:01:35
    industrial post-industrial societies of
  • 00:01:37
the western world but because of the
  • 00:01:40
    global explosion in communication
  • 00:01:42
systems it is also the saturating medium
  • 00:01:46
the saturating uh idiom of communication
  • 00:01:49
worldwide so I think to try and take the
  • 00:01:52
idea of representation to the image um
  • 00:01:56
is an important uh question and culture
  • 00:01:59
studies uh has uh paid a tremendous
  • 00:02:02
amount of attention in one way or
  • 00:02:04
    another to the centrality of
  • 00:02:07
representations and of the practice of
  • 00:02:09
    representation and media studies itself
  • 00:02:12
is in in in an obvious sense concerned
  • 00:02:15
in part with the variety of different
  • 00:02:18
texts in my in my instance visual texts
  • 00:02:23
    representations uh which are transmitted
  • 00:02:25
by the media but I'm going to stand back
  • 00:02:27
from that a bit to begin with and try
  • 00:02:29
and look at the CL the representation
  • 00:02:42
itself now the word has a kind of double
  • 00:02:46
meaning even in its Common Sense uh uh
  • 00:02:49
in common sense understanding uh it does
  • 00:02:52
mean to present to image to depict to
  • 00:02:56
offer a depiction of something else and
  • 00:02:59
    the word representation or
  • 00:03:02
representation does sort of carry with
  • 00:03:04
it the notion that something was there
  • 00:03:07
already and through the media has been
  • 00:03:11
    represented nevertheless this notion
  • 00:03:13
    that somehow representation represents a
  • 00:03:16
meaning which is already there is a very
  • 00:03:20
common idea and on the other hand one of
  • 00:03:23
the ideas that I'm going to try to
  • 00:03:25
subvert so I give you the common sense
  • 00:03:27
meaning to try to take it back a little
  • 00:03:29
bit in what I'm going to say but then
  • 00:03:32
there's another uh understanding of the
  • 00:03:34
word representation which also um uh
  • 00:03:37
plays a role in in what we bring to this
  • 00:03:39
topic because we speak of uh political
  • 00:03:43
figures as representing Us in some way
  • 00:03:46
we don't probably say that very often
  • 00:03:48
these days because we may not think they
  • 00:03:50
represent us very well but they're sort
  • 00:03:52
of supposed to represent us and in that
  • 00:03:54
sense they stand in for us they are our
  • 00:03:59
    represent
  • 00:04:00
where we can't be they can be so the
  • 00:04:03
notion of something which images and
  • 00:04:06
depicts and that which stands in for
  • 00:04:09
something else both of those ideas are
  • 00:04:12
kind of brought together in the notion
  • 00:04:13
    of
  • 00:04:14
representation now what this idea that
  • 00:04:18
that that that media practices uh uh uh
  • 00:04:21
    among other things uh
  • 00:04:23
represent topics represent uh types of
  • 00:04:27
    people represent events represent sit
  • 00:04:29
situations what we're talking about is
  • 00:04:32
the fact that in the notion of
  • 00:04:33
representation is the idea of giving
  • 00:04:35
meaning so the representation is the way
  • 00:04:38
in which meaning is somehow given to the
  • 00:04:41
things which are depicted through the uh
  • 00:04:45
images or whatever it is on screens or
  • 00:04:48
the words on a page which stand for what
  • 00:04:51
we're talking about and if you think
  • 00:04:53
that the meaning that it is given giving
  • 00:04:56
is very different from or a kind of
  • 00:04:58
distortion what it really means then
  • 00:05:02
your work on representation would be in
  • 00:05:04
measuring that gap between what one
  • 00:05:08
might think of is the true meaning of an
  • 00:05:10
event or an object and how it is
  • 00:05:14
presented in the media and there's a lot
  • 00:05:16
of very good work which is in media
  • 00:05:18
studies which is exactly like this
