Chronologie
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

- 00:01:07in today's everchanging world of
- 00:01:09business there's only one place that you
- 00:01:10can turn to for complete coverage of
- 00:01:12important developments as they happen
- 00:01:14financial news network in today's world
- 00:01:16of investing it's never been easier for
- 00:01:17an everyday Joe like you and me to
- 00:01:19access real-time Market data and
- 00:01:20financial news which does a few Taps on
- 00:01:22a smartphone apps like Robin Hood and
- 00:01:24the power of the internet give you
- 00:01:25instant updates on stock trends and
- 00:01:27Market forecasts but once you go back to
- 00:01:29the 19 1980s the financial world was
- 00:01:31much harder to navigate and getting
- 00:01:33timely Market information just wasn't
- 00:01:34available that would all change when
- 00:01:36Glenn Taylor a former minister in
- 00:01:37businessman envisioned a way to deliver
- 00:01:39live business and financial programming
- 00:01:41from various Studios and locations such
- 00:01:43as the New York and American Stock
- 00:01:44Exchange with the backing of investors
- 00:01:46and Media Partners on November 30th 1981
- 00:01:49financial news network officially
- 00:01:50launched at a weekday broadcast airing 7
- 00:01:52hours a day across 13 stations across
- 00:01:54the country surprisingly not called fake
- 00:01:56News Network fnn established itself as
- 00:01:59the first financial news Channel
- 00:02:00predating others like CNBC Fox Business
- 00:02:02and the Schwab Network its mission was
- 00:02:04clear to give small investors real-time
- 00:02:06information on the market according to
- 00:02:08Taylor I started the network more out of
- 00:02:10frustration than anything else it just
- 00:02:11seemed to me that there needed to be a
- 00:02:12better way to get Current financial
- 00:02:14information on a national basis with the
- 00:02:16launch of fnn one of its groundbreaking
- 00:02:18features was the introduction of
- 00:02:19on-screen graphics with a stock ticker
- 00:02:21with stock prices on top and index
- 00:02:23prices on the bottom while all this
- 00:02:25sounds so commonplace and not that big a
- 00:02:26deal remember this was the 1980s new
- 00:02:28stations like CNN or snc haven't yet
- 00:02:30adopted these type of visual aids so for
- 00:02:32small investors at the time having F&M
- 00:02:34was essential for getting Finance news
- 00:02:36and information by 1982 fnn underwent
- 00:02:39new leadership and relocated its
- 00:02:40headquarters to the ground floor of
- 00:02:41maril Lynch's building in Manhattan
- 00:02:43allowing passer by to watch it broadcast
- 00:02:46just 3 years later FN made a bold move
- 00:02:48by severing its ties with its local
- 00:02:49stations and transitioning to a 24-hour
- 00:02:51cable only TV station with this shift
- 00:02:53fnn Diversified it program by launching
- 00:02:55a sister Network named score score was a
- 00:02:57weekday evening Sports block that aired
- 00:02:59sport sporting news and events like
- 00:03:00NASCAR boxing and professional wrestling
- 00:03:03this part of F&M was a joint venture
- 00:03:05between them and anheiser Bush yes the
- 00:03:07beer company before launching score was
- 00:03:09previously known as Sports time and it
- 00:03:10was pretty much similar to what score
- 00:03:12was but a lot more limited so when
- 00:03:14Sports time shut down in March of 1985
- 00:03:16am Heiser Bush which also owned a
- 00:03:18satellite transponders used by Sports
- 00:03:19time and fnn partnered up with fnn to
- 00:03:21create score unfortunately there's not
- 00:03:24much surviving footage of this part of
- 00:03:25fn's History so yeah let's move on by
- 00:03:27the late 1980s info technology which
- 00:03:30also owned United Press International at
- 00:03:31the time bought a 47% stake in fnn
- 00:03:34becoming its largest shareholder the
- 00:03:36network would also continue expanding
- 00:03:37its financial sector to Prime Time with
- 00:03:39a slate of original programs geared
- 00:03:40towards its upscale viewers because of
- 00:03:42this score the late night Sports block
- 00:03:44was pushed to weekends where it would
- 00:03:46later be renamed to fnn Sports in 1989
- 00:03:49by 1990 fnn will peak in terms of
- 00:03:51programming and viewership reaching a
- 00:03:52potential audience of about 35 million
- 00:03:54homes across the country however behind
- 00:03:56the scenes was a house of cards waiting
- 00:03:58to fall in October of that year it would
- 00:04:00be reported that fnn faced a potential
- 00:04:02default on a $48.5 million line of
- 00:04:04credit due to a dispute with their
- 00:04:05Auditors deoe and touche over whether to
- 00:04:08expense or capitalize a $28 million
- 00:04:10investment in a new service dubbed fnn
- 00:04:12Pro which according to the New York
- 00:04:14Times was a new high-tech video Business
- 00:04:16Service aimed at stock Brokers and other
- 00:04:18investment professionals sounds kind of
- 00:04:20like a subscription service Don't It
- 00:04:21Anyways the Auditors later discovered
- 00:04:23that fn's Chief Financial Officer C
- 00:04:25Steven Bolan was making unauthorized
- 00:04:27payments to himself this led to an
- 00:04:29internal investig igation within fnn
- 00:04:30which ended up in Bolan getting the boot
- 00:04:32and two members of his accounting staff
- 00:04:34being placed on leave this Scandal
- 00:04:35severely damaged fn's credibility and
- 00:04:37because of it fnn stock along with his
- 00:04:39parent company dropped nearly 50% this
- 00:04:41would anger shareholders of fnn who
- 00:04:43would later sue the company for
- 00:04:44wrongfully withholding details about fnn
- 00:04:46pro deo and touche suggested that the
- 00:04:49best solution was to report the $28
- 00:04:50million investment as an expense fnn
- 00:04:53argued that if we were forced to do so
- 00:04:54the company would suffer a severe
- 00:04:55Financial loss making it impossible to
- 00:04:57continue operations and I'm guessing
- 00:04:59that the network didn't want to hear
- 00:05:01that so so they ended up replacing their
- 00:05:02auditor with another firm but it's not
- 00:05:04like changing firms would do any
- 00:05:05difference and shortly thereafter it
- 00:05:07would be reported that fnn faced a $
- 00:05:0972.5 million loss for the fiscal year of
- 00:05:121990 God damn because of this fnn needs
- 00:05:15to sell itself if it wanted to survive
- 00:05:17in early 1991 F&M would have a handshake
- 00:05:20deal with group W and DOW Jones to
- 00:05:22purchase the network for $90 million yet
- 00:05:24NBC which also owned the consumer news
- 00:05:26and business Channel AKA CNBC came to an
- 00:05:29agreement to purchased fnn for $105
- 00:05:31million however in March of 1991 fnn
- 00:05:34filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy which
- 00:05:36now placed fn's assets for sale
- 00:05:38including a deal to sell itself under
- 00:05:39review by the federal bankruptcy court
- 00:05:41this led to a bidding war between NBC
- 00:05:43and the partnership between Dow Jones
- 00:05:44and group W and in the end a bankruptcy
- 00:05:47court awarded fnn to CNBC whose $14.3
- 00:05:50million bid was deemed more realistic
- 00:05:52with all that being said finally on
- 00:05:54March 21st 1991 CNBC would take control
- 00:05:57of fnn satellite transponders
- 00:05:59effectively ceasing fnn and scores
- 00:06:01operations and allowing CNBC to expand
- 00:06:02his presence quickly overnight while fnn
- 00:06:05was no more CNBC would temporarily
- 00:06:07Rebrand its business daytime program as
- 00:06:09CNBC fnn daytime until 1992 as for the
- 00:06:12channel space Bloomberg TV would take
- 00:06:14the spot just two years later after fn's
- 00:06:16closure and have former employees
- 00:06:17working over there the way I see it fnn
- 00:06:19was definitely ahead of its time but had
- 00:06:21it not been for the internal Sabotage by
- 00:06:22its Chief Financial Officer fnn could
- 00:06:24have been thriving today who knows in
- 00:06:26some alternative Universe Finance Bros
- 00:06:28are using fnn Pro
- 00:06:30CNN Airport network your trusted travel
- 00:06:37companion what do you mean they hit the
- 00:06:38second
- 00:06:41tower if you ever been to an airport
- 00:06:43prior to co you might have seen or at
- 00:06:45least caught a glimpse of the CNN
- 00:06:46Airport network spoiler alert it didn't
- 00:06:48cover 911 this out of home TV network
- 00:06:50aired at select airports offering a
- 00:06:52similar format to what HLN was covering
- 00:06:54basic news weather and Market updates in
- 00:06:56a quick consumable fashion the idea for
- 00:06:58an airport Channel was first unveiled in
- 00:07:00April of 1991 by Turner Broadcasting and
- 00:07:02claimed that the network would deliver
- 00:07:03live programming to Airline terminals
- 00:07:05across the country it would be powered
- 00:07:07by CNN staff and anchors on a 30-minute
- 00:07:09rotational basis drawn from CNN and CNN
- 00:07:11Headline News providing national
- 00:07:13International Sports business news as
- 00:07:15well as travel tips consumer features
- 00:07:17and a crawl along the bottom of the
- 00:07:18screen displaying real-time Airport
- 00:07:20arrival and departure schedules
- 00:07:22according to Terence F mcgurk then
- 00:07:24executive president of Turner
- 00:07:25Broadcasting 70% of the Channel's
- 00:07:27content would be devoted to constantly
- 00:07:28updated editori torial material with the
- 00:07:30remaining 30% available for advertising
- 00:07:32targeted at an upscale highly mobile
- 00:07:34business audience the network began
- 00:07:35testing on June 3rd 1991 at three major
- 00:07:38airports that being Dallas Fort Worth
- 00:07:40Atlanta International Airport and O'Hare
- 00:07:42International Airport once testing had
- 00:07:44finalized CNN Airport network would
- 00:07:46officially launch on January 20th 1992
- 00:07:49where it eventually expanded to over 58
- 00:07:51airports Nationwide over time CNN
- 00:07:53airport expanded its programming Beyond
- 00:07:55live news to include lifestyle and
- 00:07:57travel content as well as partner up
- 00:07:58with major sport organizations to air
- 00:08:00games from the NFL NBA NCAA and MLB they
- 00:08:04would also include the Super Bowl if you
- 00:08:05so happen to be stuck at the airport on
- 00:08:06that day to also keep ease at mind CNN
- 00:08:09airport filtered out distressing with
- 00:08:10negative travel related stories so
- 00:08:12stories about plane crashes or anything
- 00:08:14of that nature wouldn't be shown the
- 00:08:16president's dog just had puppies there
- 00:08:18was a plain crash however in the event
- 00:08:21that it does become major headlines the
- 00:08:23network could switch to a live CNN feed
- 00:08:25on a 10-second delay if necessary while
- 00:08:27such a network might have had a lot of
- 00:08:28viewers during the 199 and 2000s with
- 00:08:30the increase of people owning a
- 00:08:31smartphone or laptop less and less
- 00:08:33people were paying attention to the
- 00:08:34network essentially making the network
- 00:08:36outdated by the 2010s by the latter
- 00:08:38years of CNN Airport's existence
- 00:08:40controversy regarding the network
- 00:08:41started coming into the conversation
- 00:08:42particularly from those on the right
- 00:08:44claiming that CNN had a monopoly in
- 00:08:46airports whatever that means but this
- 00:08:48controversy became largely irrelevant by
- 00:08:502020 due to co reducing air travel the
- 00:08:52channel faced a huge decline in
- 00:08:54viewership and so in January 2021 CNN
- 00:08:57president Jeff Zucker announced in a
- 00:08:58memo shared on on Twitter that CNN
- 00:09:00airport would cease operations after 30
- 00:09:02years of service by the end of March
- 00:09:04Zucker explained the Steep decline in
- 00:09:06airport traffic because of covid-19
- 00:09:08coupled with the all new ways people are
- 00:09:09consuming content on their personal
- 00:09:11devices has lessened the need for the
- 00:09:12CNN Airport network frankly I'm
- 00:09:15surprised to stick around far into 2021
- 00:09:17I do remember seeing it at airports but
- 00:09:19you couldn't hear it in terminals due to
- 00:09:20it being loud or muted so it was mostly
- 00:09:22Coast captioning they will try to solve
- 00:09:24this issue with the addition of tunity
- 00:09:26which allowed viewers to sync CNN
- 00:09:27airport to your phone but mean by this
- 00:09:29point you're on your phone so it kind of
- 00:09:31defeats the purpose A for effort I guess
- 00:09:33stuck in line well stay informed with
- 00:09:35the new CNN checkout channel available
- 00:09:37at these major
- 00:09:39supermarkets if you thought an airport
- 00:09:41channel was weird imagine having a
- 00:09:42grocery store checkout Channel like like
- 00:09:44who is this really for the cashier the
- 00:09:47checkout channel was an instore
- 00:09:48television network created by Turner
- 00:09:49Broadcasting and act media designed to
- 00:09:51relieve the boredom of Supermarket
- 00:09:53customers waiting in line to pay for
- 00:09:55groceries what the concept for this
- 00:09:57channel emerged from research by
- 00:09:58Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- 00:10:00Professor Richard Larson who specialized
- 00:10:02in the science of waiting lines at a
- 00:10:04news conference announcing its launch
- 00:10:06Larsson explained waiting in a
- 00:10:07supermarket checkout line is something
- 00:10:09we all experience daily we're hassled by
- 00:10:11high levels of stress and frustration
- 00:10:13it's a subtle form of imprisonment but
- 00:10:15the checkout Channel transforms empty
- 00:10:16time into informative and productive
- 00:10:18time before its official launch in 1992
- 00:10:21the channel was tested out as early as
- 00:10:231990 and Kroger supermarkets in Detroit
- 00:10:25Michigan and based on hidden cameras and
- 00:10:27exit interviews 87% of customers
- 00:10:29reportedly enjoyed the service what are
- 00:10:31your thoughts on the CNN checkout
- 00:10:32channel it's all right I think it really
- 00:10:35helps allow time pass while you're
- 00:10:37inline the media are putting TVs in our
- 00:10:40supermarkets to spread their commissary
- 00:10:42agenda that small sample of reactions
- 00:10:44was enough for ACT media and CNN to
- 00:10:46invest approximately $75 million to
- 00:10:49start this Venture and so on February
- 00:10:5120th 1992 the CNN checkout channel was
- 00:10:54launched according to this photo I found
- 00:10:55the TVs were placed directly by the
- 00:10:57checkout lines airing 8 to 10 minutes
- 00:10:59segments of the news along with 2
- 00:11:00minutes of commercial breaks which were
- 00:11:02tailored to different audiences based on
- 00:11:04the time of day so during the daytime
- 00:11:06the commercials were tailored for women
- 00:11:07in the evenings they are geared towards
- 00:11:09couples and singles and on weekends they
- 00:11:11are targeted for families the checkout
- 00:11:13channel was featured at Kroger Acme A&P
- 00:11:16and finess supermarkets across cities
- 00:11:18like Atlanta Charlotte Columbus Los
- 00:11:20Angeles New York City Philadelphia
- 00:11:22Providence and San Jose act media
- 00:11:25president Wayne W luro was expecting for
- 00:11:27the service to operate in at least 5
- 00:11:29,000 stores by 1992 yet by 1993 it would
- 00:11:32only be available in 840 stores that
- 00:11:35statistic alone might have raised some
- 00:11:36red flags and as a result by February
- 00:11:39that same year Turner Broadcasting
- 00:11:40announced that it will pull the plug on
- 00:11:42the checkout Channel there were several
- 00:11:43reasons for its failure primary one
- 00:11:45being that it was a massive Financial
- 00:11:46flop what did you expect due to the $16
- 00:11:49million investment in the checkout
- 00:11:50Channel Turner's fourth quarter earnings
- 00:11:52in 1992 fell by 30% in contrast Cartoon
- 00:11:55Network another Turner property had
- 00:11:57launched the same time of Turner's
- 00:11:58fourth quarter earnings and was proven
- 00:12:00to be a massive success so perhaps they
- 00:12:01wanted to focus on that long term rather
- 00:12:03than the future of the checkout channel
- 00:12:05the second and perhaps most logical
- 00:12:06reason was that no one really cared for
- 00:12:08it Turner Broadcasting just didn't
- 00:12:10understand how Shoppers or employees
- 00:12:12would react according to the Daily
- 00:12:13Gazette Shoppers watching the network
- 00:12:15often held up the line either because
- 00:12:16they were distracted by the TV or
- 00:12:18because they didn't have their IDs or
- 00:12:19checkbooks ready meanwhile cashiers who
- 00:12:21had to stand at their post for hours
- 00:12:23found the service repetitive and
- 00:12:24annoying eventually turning the volume
- 00:12:26off defeating the entire purpose of the
- 00:12:28channel on March 31st 1993 CNN checkout
- 00:12:31Channel wh Seas operations and was
- 00:12:33subsequentially written off for taxes as
- 00:12:35I've said it many times before a fate
- 00:12:36arguably worse than death the stores
- 00:12:38left of the equipment either had the
- 00:12:40option to remove the checkout Channel
- 00:12:41equipment entirely or keep the monitors
- 00:12:43and switch to a direct feed of CNN
- 00:12:45Headline News I'm sure many of them just
- 00:12:47got rid of them all I can really say
- 00:12:49about this is um this is weird like
- 00:12:52unfamiliar with TVs at checkout lines
- 00:12:54but I think investing Millions on
- 00:12:55presenting the news you see at home is a
- 00:12:57bit of a stretch like I think most
- 00:12:58people would have just glanced at it and
- 00:13:00not think much of it a similar concept
- 00:13:02that works much better is gstv which is
- 00:13:04almost the same concept seen in gas
- 00:13:05stations that features you know like the
- 00:13:07most basic stuff like weather
- 00:13:08entertaining news the word of the day
- 00:13:10that's probably the best segment I just
- 00:13:11learned the word perspicacious as for
- 00:13:13any footage of the checkout channel it's
- 00:13:15essentially lost media since the network
- 00:13:17was only available in a limited number
- 00:13:18of locations for a short amount of time
- 00:13:20no footage was ever archived the only
- 00:13:22remaining evidence of his existence
- 00:13:23comes from a few keychains on eBay as
- 00:13:25well as a promotional poster but yeah
- 00:13:28that's really all there is to it
- 00:13:30don't miss the action on CNN Sports
- 00:13:32Illustrated call your cable or satellite
- 00:13:34provider all right you're going to have
- 00:13:35to forgive me for all these CNN entries
- 00:13:37there's just way too many CNN Sports
- 00:13:39Illustrated was a 24-hour all sports
- 00:13:41Cable News Channel created in
- 00:13:42collaboration between CNN and Sports
- 00:13:44Illustrated hence name and was announced
- 00:13:46following the merger between Turner
- 00:13:47Broadcasting and Time Warner the network
- 00:13:50aimed to combine the journalistic
- 00:13:51expertise with Sports Illustrated with
- 00:13:53CNN's broadcasting resources yet unlike
- 00:13:55other sports networks it didn't air Live
- 00:13:57Events instead it focused solely on on
- 00:13:59sports news and information just like
- 00:14:01the main CNN channel CNN SI had their
- 00:14:03own slate of original programming most
- 00:14:05of these were either previews or recap
- 00:14:07shows so you had NFL preview college
- 00:14:10football preview this week in the NBA
- 00:14:12Sports Illustrated Golf Plus World sport
- 00:14:15page one Trev Albert's Full Tilt and
- 00:14:17their Flagship show sports tonight which
- 00:14:19actually still happens to be one of
- 00:14:20CNN's original shows since its launch
- 00:14:22and was basically their version of
- 00:14:23sports center offering highlights scores
- 00:14:25and sports news the show was hosted by
- 00:14:27Nick Charles and Fred Hickman both of
- 00:14:29whom anchored the program for most of
- 00:14:30its run while all that sounds good and
- 00:14:32dandy it really came at the worst time
- 00:14:34possible see when CNN Sports Illustrated
- 00:14:36launch in December of 1996 ESPN news and
- 00:14:39Fox Sports Net had launched a month
- 00:14:40prior literally on the same day too add
- 00:14:43to that the dominance of regular ESPN
- 00:14:44and ESPN 2 which already had Sports
- 00:14:46Center and was available to millions of
- 00:14:48homes it became clear that establishing
- 00:14:50a sports network this L into the game
- 00:14:51was going to be a gamble as the years
- 00:14:53went on sports tonight and other
- 00:14:55programs failed to boost viewership and
- 00:14:56with ESPN and ESPN news ever expanding
- 00:14:59dominance in market share it resulted in
- 00:15:01low viewership and advertising Revenue
- 00:15:03potential many have pointed out that CNN
- 00:15:05Si's lack of Life Sports is the reason
- 00:15:07for the low turnout so in a last ditch
- 00:15:09effort to boost ratings the network
- 00:15:11began airing live events in late 2001
- 00:15:13including NASCAR qualifying races
- 00:15:15Wimbleton matches lacrosse and women's
- 00:15:17soccer although these additions
- 00:15:18increased awareness some Executives
- 00:15:20feared that broadcasting live sports
- 00:15:22would lead to higher licensing and
- 00:15:23operator fees yet this will be all
- 00:15:25shortlived when on September 11th 2001
- 00:15:28uh you can see where I'm going at
- 00:15:30following the tragic aftermath of 911
- 00:15:32the media landscape dramatically altered
- 00:15:34how news was presented moving forward in
- 00:15:36response CNN began scaling down on its
- 00:15:38entertainment and non-news content
- 00:15:40opting in for more hard news coverage as
- 00:15:42a result shows like sports tonight moved
- 00:15:44exclusively to CNN SI where it was
- 00:15:46eventually canceled in 2002 after 22
- 00:15:48years on the air the CNN SI website also
- 00:15:51began featuring more news on the war on
- 00:15:52terror given the circumstances this was
- 00:15:55understandable but yeah it was clear
- 00:15:56that CNN was heading in a New Direction
- 00:15:58ultimately the post 911 shift along with
- 00:16:00its poor viewership made CNN SI
- 00:16:02unsustainable and in April of 2002 CNN
- 00:16:05announced that CNN Sports Illustrated
- 00:16:06would shut down by May 15th on their
- 00:16:08last day on the air CNN Sports
- 00:16:10Illustrated sign off with its Anor
- 00:16:12stinking its viewers and repeating the
- 00:16:13same episode of sports tonight until
- 00:16:15midnight where it was followed with a
- 00:16:16blue screen with text reading the owners
- 00:16:18of CNN SI have stopped production of the
- 00:16:20network and we regret that we can no
- 00:16:22longer provide it to you while that
- 00:16:24marked the end of CNN Sports Illustrated
- 00:16:25as a TV network the CNN SI name would
- 00:16:28remain on the website until the end of
- 00:16:292002 where it was later renamed to
- 00:16:31sportsillustrated.com yet they will keep
- 00:16:33the domain active until 2013 when the
- 00:16:35partnership between Sports Illustrated
- 00:16:36and CNN ended this was due to Turner
- 00:16:39purchasing Bleacher Report and replacing
- 00:16:40Sports Illustrated as their new go-to
- 00:16:42platform for sports news and analysts a
- 00:16:44role Bleacher Report continues to fill
- 00:16:46today and has expanded on in my opinion
- 00:16:48I think if the channel didn't have the
- 00:16:49CNN name plaster to it it might have
- 00:16:51been a bigger success because when
- 00:16:52people think of CNN they think of news
- 00:16:54not Sports I think if they stuck with
- 00:16:56like Turner Sports or TNT maybe it would
- 00:16:58have had a better chance of success also
- 00:17:00the name is kind of dumb CNN SII at
- 00:17:02first glance I thought this was like a
- 00:17:03Spanish
- 00:17:05Network hi please excuse the mess we're
- 00:17:08about to launch Cable's newest Network
- 00:17:11it's America's talking the first all
- 00:17:13Talk network dedicated to what America
- 00:17:15is talking about let's take a break from
- 00:17:17all the CNN and talk about another
- 00:17:19Channel America's talking while this was
- 00:17:21not technically a full-on news channel
- 00:17:23America's talking offered a unique form
- 00:17:24of commentary and conversation that
- 00:17:26would be replicated by other networks
- 00:17:27later on of a talk-based network this
- 00:17:30CNBC spin-off launched on July 4th 1994
- 00:17:33and served as a platform for various
- 00:17:34talk shows covering Health news
- 00:17:36relationships interviews and whatever
- 00:17:38was on people's minds and would be the
- 00:17:40launching path for many in anchors like
- 00:17:42Chris Matthews Sean Hannity and Bill
- 00:17:44O'Reilly what viewers found unique about
- 00:17:46America's talking was that they could
- 00:17:47interact with live broadcast by phoning
- 00:17:49faxing or emailing their questions and
- 00:17:51comments this gave the network a raw
- 00:17:53authentic Vibe which honestly led to
- 00:17:54some insane moments and Todd from
- 00:17:56Virginia says it means I get to spend
- 00:17:58some qu quity time with my sweetheart
- 00:18:00what do you think about that Josh what
- 00:18:02would make your Valentine's Day perfect
- 00:18:04well hello yes hi Josh I sort of uh did
- 00:18:08something really bad today you did yeah
- 00:18:11my girlfriend got really mad at me and I
- 00:18:13think she's mad I sort of ran over her
- 00:18:16cat with my car
- 00:18:18no and she like threw me out of the
- 00:18:20house and she got so mad
- 00:18:23and I just like to say I love you
- 00:18:26honey well Josh I hope it that's a
- 00:18:29that's a story for a soap opera I'm I'm
- 00:18:32really sorry about that I ran over a
- 00:18:34duck one time on uh my daughter's
- 00:18:36birthday and I'm she'll never let me
- 00:18:38forget it uh we have uh Wanda from New
- 00:18:41York is calling in poor guy ran over his
- 00:18:43girlfriend's cat Roger ALS who was then
- 00:18:46president of CNBC at the time would be
- 00:18:48the man behind America's talking and
- 00:18:49wanted the network to be the cable
- 00:18:51television version to talk radio
- 00:18:52providing a platform for average viewers
- 00:18:54to engage with host on a wide variety of
- 00:18:56topics from lighthearted to
- 00:18:57controversial while the network had no
- 00:18:59trouble attracting colors and viewers it
- 00:19:01did struggle with low viewership as a
- 00:19:03result NBC would look for new ways to
- 00:19:05revamp the network and by mid 1995 they
- 00:19:08had announced a $220 million investment
- 00:19:10from Microsoft for a 50-50 joint venture
- 00:19:12to launch a 24-hour Cable News Channel
- 00:19:15where by December it was revealed as
- 00:19:17MSNBC and was set to replace America's
- 00:19:19talking within 6 months and well let's
- 00:19:21just say ALS didn't take the news of
- 00:19:23this lightly as a matter of fact it was
- 00:19:25this that ended his 20-year run at NBC
- 00:19:28believing his control had been
- 00:19:29diminished just a few weeks after the
- 00:19:30announcement of MSNBC alss resigned from
- 00:19:33his position as president of CNBC where
- 00:19:35shortly thereafter he would go on to
- 00:19:36partner with rubert mardock to create
- 00:19:38the Fox News Channel so yeah make with
- 00:19:41that information as you will I should
- 00:19:42also mention that 3 months before als's
- 00:19:44resigned NBC hired a law firm to conduct
- 00:19:46an internal investigation after
- 00:19:48allegations surfaced that alss had
- 00:19:50called Zen NBC executive David zaslav a
- 00:19:57little um that was uh that was really
- 00:20:00bad gez even in the 90s zaz laugh had
- 00:20:03his critics NBC meanwhile moved forward
- 00:20:05with its plans to Rebrand the channel
- 00:20:07and so on July 15th 1996 NBC rebranded
- 00:20:10the channel to MSNBC replacing America's
- 00:20:13talking after over 2 years if you
- 00:20:15haven't watched the other episode of
- 00:20:16discontinued Nostalgia I briefly touched
- 00:20:18upon msnbc's early days where it was
- 00:20:20more focused on a Tex heavy audience
- 00:20:22however after the Channel's news
- 00:20:24coverage of Princess Diana's death
- 00:20:25brought in strong ratings MSNBC shifted
- 00:20:27away from techbase news and it was this
- 00:20:29pivot that eventually created space for
- 00:20:31what would become tech TV in 1998 which
- 00:20:33will later be purchased by G4 if you
- 00:20:35haven't seen that and want to know more
- 00:20:37about it go check it out link will be in
- 00:20:38the description if you want to know how
- 00:20:40to make the most of your money there's
- 00:20:41only one place to turn TNN FN TNN FN the
- 00:20:45howto network for all things money CNN
- 00:20:49financial Network or CNN FN for sure was
- 00:20:51a financial channel that lasted only 9
- 00:20:53years and is similar to other Financial
- 00:20:54networks like CNBC and Bloomberg but
- 00:20:57saying that they're similar is putting
- 00:20:58it politely while the financial news
- 00:20:59network revolutionized the way Finance
- 00:21:01was presented on TV CNN FN took it to
- 00:21:04another level not just on TV but in the
- 00:21:06online sector one of CNN fn's pioneering
- 00:21:09achievement was becoming the first
- 00:21:10Network to offer an automatic onair
- 00:21:12stock ticker with real-time stock prices
- 00:21:14although CNBC and fnn had already
- 00:21:16introduced stock tickers CNN FN system
- 00:21:19was different it used an engine that
- 00:21:20automatically selected and displayed the
- 00:21:22most relevant stocks in real time
- 00:21:23compared to other networks which had to
- 00:21:25enter the numbers manually in addition
- 00:21:27CNN FN made significant strides with its
- 00:21:29website cnnfn.com featured an array of
- 00:21:32tools that other Financial websites of
- 00:21:34the time such as Yahoo finance and
- 00:21:35market watch did not offer the site
- 00:21:37would be one of the first if not the
- 00:21:39first websites to offer a stock quote
- 00:21:41engine this was not only a massive step
- 00:21:43forward for the evolution of the
- 00:21:44internet but how Finance was researched
- 00:21:46for everyday people before cnnfn tools
- 00:21:48like these were primarily available to
- 00:21:49financial firms so having the ease of
- 00:21:51access to this information would give
- 00:21:53birth to a whole new generation of
- 00:21:54investors in 1997 CNN FN became even
- 00:21:58more groundbreaking by offering live on
- 00:22:00demand Web video to complement its
- 00:22:02financial news broadcast using web
- 00:22:03leader 2 technology from VX stream
- 00:22:05Incorporated while web streaming now
- 00:22:07sounds commonplace back in 1997 it was
- 00:22:09an untapped Market as few people had yet
- 00:22:11realized the potential of online video
- 00:22:13streaming although many assumed that Ted
- 00:22:15Turner was the genius behind CNN FN
- 00:22:16since he was the one who created both
- 00:22:18headline news and CNN the credit
- 00:22:20actually goes to Lou dos he might be
- 00:22:22seen as a controversial figure now I'm
- 00:22:23sure he has his critics but it's worth
- 00:22:25acknowledging his historical role in
- 00:22:26shaping CNN fn's Legacy plus he's dead
- 00:22:29who really cares let's continue dobs has
- 00:22:31been with CNN since his assumtion in
- 00:22:331980 and played a key role with its
- 00:22:35success he held several executive
- 00:22:36positions and anchored one of the
- 00:22:37Network's early hits money line which
- 00:22:39was later renamed to lud dobs tonight he
- 00:22:42remained with CNN until 2009 when he was
- 00:22:44let go for a well let's just say a bunch
- 00:22:45of stuff that I won't get into let's go
- 00:22:47back to 1995 after 15 years of working
- 00:22:49together at CNN dos became questioning
- 00:22:51the Network's Direction and even
- 00:22:52threatened to leave according to variety
- 00:22:54Roger ALS the guy we mentioned earlier
- 00:22:56with America's talking came close to
- 00:22:58learning dos away from CNN and in order
- 00:23:00to keep dobs Turner essentially gave him
- 00:23:02his own network to run CNN FN as
- 00:23:04Reckless as that sounds for any company
- 00:23:06dobs had a vision for presenting
- 00:23:07financial news on an entirely different
- 00:23:09level soon enough the main CNN channels
- 00:23:11would start implementing features that
- 00:23:13CNN FN did first like having Graphics
- 00:23:15covering the entire screen in the long
- 00:23:16term initially CNN FN aired 14 hours of
- 00:23:19daily programming mostly during the
- 00:23:21business hours by 1997 due to pressure
- 00:23:23from dos and competition from CNBC cnnfn
- 00:23:26expanded to over 18 hours a day on the
- 00:23:29surface the expansion seemed like a sign
- 00:23:30of the Network's success but behind the
- 00:23:32scenes tensions were Brewing to put it
- 00:23:34simply Lou dos and then president of CNN
- 00:23:36Rick Kaplan had what one executive
- 00:23:38labeled quote creative differences with
- 00:23:40management the two will continue
- 00:23:42clashing with each other for the next
- 00:23:43two years when on April 20th 1999 it
- 00:23:46will get to a boiling point tragically
- 00:23:48this day is remembered for the Coline
- 00:23:49high school massacre as expected CNN
- 00:23:52along with other news outlets were
- 00:23:53covering this tragedy yet for some
- 00:23:55reason and I still continue to wrap my
- 00:23:57head on why he thought this was a
- 00:23:58goodidea idea dobs whose show is
- 00:23:59interrupted by President Clinton's
- 00:24:01speech in Littleton Colorado following
- 00:24:03the massacre ordered his producers to
- 00:24:05cut away from the president's address
- 00:24:06and return to money line however Kaplan
- 00:24:08overruled dos insisting that CNN stay
- 00:24:10with the president's speech in response
- 00:24:13do looked directly into the camera and
- 00:24:14told the audience CNN president Rick
- 00:24:16Kaplan wants us to return to Littleton
- 00:24:18just weeks after this incident dobs
- 00:24:20announced his departure from CNN a few
- 00:24:22months later he will go on to
- 00:24:23createspace.com a publication focused on
- 00:24:25Space news and whatnot by the way I've
- 00:24:27tried looking for of footage of the L
- 00:24:29dos Columbine incident but haven't been
- 00:24:30able to find it many sources claim that
- 00:24:32it did happen so it's not like it's some
- 00:24:34sort of hoax but you'd think that A
- 00:24:35Moment Like This would be captured by at
- 00:24:37least one person but considering the
- 00:24:39sensitive subject matter I'm not sure
- 00:24:41whether it's worth pursuing any further
- 00:24:43back on the topic of cnnfn as terrible
- 00:24:45as I am for linking this tragedy to the
- 00:24:47Network's decline Do's departure from
- 00:24:48CNN had a significant impact on its
- 00:24:50future and contributed to its downward
- 00:24:52decline it's also important to note that
- 00:24:54dos had wanted CNN FN to operate
- 00:24:56independently from the larger Time
- 00:24:57Warner glomerate but those Ambitions
- 00:25:00were stifled in the events of lud's
- 00:25:02leaving this would be followed by David
- 00:25:03Borman Executive Vice President for CNN
- 00:25:06FN to be fired by CNN's top Executives
- 00:25:08who will quickly get replaced by Terell
- 00:25:10Ryan another high-profile employee who
- 00:25:12oversaw other parts of the CNN umbrella
- 00:25:14and it was under her leadership that CNN
- 00:25:16FN started to become an afterthought
- 00:25:18throughout the next few years CNN FN
- 00:25:20would have a few significant changes
- 00:25:22including overhauling its weekday
- 00:25:23schedule as well as integrating CNN FN
- 00:25:25content into CNN's regular schedule by
- 00:25:28Sim Dem casting certain Financial
- 00:25:29programs across both networks this was
- 00:25:31an effort to help build the Network's
- 00:25:33visibility because CNN FN has struggled
- 00:25:35to gain traction as a TV News Network
- 00:25:37this is despite having a top of the
- 00:25:38notch website but even the strength of
- 00:25:40its online presence would soon start to
- 00:25:42shift in January 2001 Time Warner wait
- 00:25:45oh I'm sorry AOL Time Warner excuse me
- 00:25:48announced that CNN FN will be rebranded
- 00:25:50as CNN money to focus more on the
- 00:25:52mainstream financial news personal
- 00:25:54finance and small business coverage this
- 00:25:56transition would also incorporate
- 00:25:57resources from magazines like fortune
- 00:25:59and money just 9 months later cnnfn.com
- 00:26:02would become money.cnn.com while it
- 00:26:05seemed like the end of cnnfn the idea to
- 00:26:07Rebrand the TV channel itself was
- 00:26:08scrapped and the CNN FN name remained on
- 00:26:11the cable network oddly enough L dos had
- 00:26:13returned to CNN following with kaplan's
- 00:26:15departure however rather than attempting
- 00:26:17to save the network he helped create he
- 00:26:19probably knew its fate was sealed and
- 00:26:21with instead focus on his hosting duties
- 00:26:22on money line by this point CNBC had
- 00:26:25firmly established itself as the leading
- 00:26:27financial news Channel with around a
- 00:26:29ballpark estimate of 80 million cable
- 00:26:30subscribers compared to CNN fn's 30
- 00:26:33million in October of 2004 CNN announced
- 00:26:36that CNN FN would be shut down by mid
- 00:26:38December just short of its 9-year
- 00:26:40anniversary while the financial network
- 00:26:42was no more CNN money would become the
- 00:26:44primary Financial hub for the CNN brand
- 00:26:46where it would later be renamed to CNN
- 00:26:48business in 2018 and continues to
- 00:26:50operate to this very day CNN FN honestly
- 00:26:53seemed like it had a lot of potential
- 00:26:55right from the very beginning the
- 00:26:56service had introduced several
- 00:26:57innovative features that would make
- 00:26:59investing far more accessible than fnn
- 00:27:01or CNBC ever did from an automatic stock
- 00:27:04tier to having online video in 1997
- 00:27:07however due to the buding of heads
- 00:27:08between dos and Kaplan it eventually led
- 00:27:10to dobs leaving and half people who
- 00:27:12didn't know how to operate a financial
- 00:27:13Channel run into the ground at least you
- 00:27:15could say CNN business is doing far
- 00:27:17better than CNN FN ever did introducing
- 00:27:21newset good morning and thanks for
- 00:27:22joining us here on newset the 24/7 News
- 00:27:25Channel that brings back news as it used
- 00:27:27to be here we have a modern attempt at a
- 00:27:29startup News company Newsnet Newsnet was
- 00:27:33not a news channel but rather a free to
- 00:27:35a TV network that aired on local
- 00:27:36stations similar to other networks like
- 00:27:38CW my network TV or the big four
- 00:27:41stations the channel operated 24/7 and
- 00:27:43emphasized presenting the news in a
- 00:27:45straightforward nonpartisan manner the
- 00:27:47idea behind newset came from Eric
- 00:27:49gutilla a broadcast entrepreneur with
- 00:27:51several years of experience in 2011 he
- 00:27:54launched wnn my news 26 at the age of 22
- 00:27:58God damn what am I doing with my life
- 00:28:00building it from the ground up my news
- 00:28:01provided continuous local news coverage
- 00:28:03in the area and was recognized for its
- 00:28:05innovative approach to delivering
- 00:28:06Regional news effectively in addition to
- 00:28:08his work at my news26 he established the
- 00:28:11format of News Channel Nebraska a local
- 00:28:13news network spaning seven TV stations
- 00:28:15so yeah you could tell this guy had a
- 00:28:17lot of ambition for what he did this
- 00:28:19hard work would result in some
- 00:28:20recognition including two Emy
- 00:28:22nominations and the LP TV station of the
- 00:28:24Year Award presented at the National
- 00:28:25Association of broadcasters Expo in Las
- 00:28:27Vegas with his Acclaim WIA aimed to take
- 00:28:30his vision to the next level by making
- 00:28:31it nationwide in 2017 he launched a
- 00:28:33Kickstarter campaign to jumpstart newset
- 00:28:35under the working title of local news
- 00:28:38network now the reason they decided to
- 00:28:39do a Kickstarter instead of a oh I don't
- 00:28:41know going to a bank for a loan was that
- 00:28:43they wanted to maintain control within
- 00:28:45the team rather than having a board of
- 00:28:47external decision makers luckily for me
- 00:28:49the kickstarter goes into great detail
- 00:28:51about how this would have worked lnn
- 00:28:53would follow a news wheel format
- 00:28:55updating stories every 30 minutes in a
- 00:28:56quick consumable fashion if that sounds
- 00:28:59familiar basically it's the same format
- 00:29:00as headline news and Satellite News
- 00:29:02Network where it will straight to the
- 00:29:04facts and no [ __ ] allegedly the goal
- 00:29:07was to create an integral and honest
- 00:29:09Network compared to other Legacy Media
- 00:29:10channels which in recent years have
- 00:29:12started becoming personality based with
- 00:29:14host having strong often extreme
- 00:29:15opinions while starting a satellite News
- 00:29:17Network in the late 2010s already sounds
- 00:29:19like a backwards decision they at least
- 00:29:20had the digital feature in mind Not only
- 00:29:23would it be on antenna but the new
- 00:29:24platform would also be available on
- 00:29:26streaming service Distributors like Roku
- 00:29:27and TV and include a mobile app for IOS
- 00:29:30and Android another futuristic feature
- 00:29:32of Newsnet was its plan to offer
- 00:29:33localized broadcast for different
- 00:29:35regions allowing viewers to receive
- 00:29:37region specific news that means if you
- 00:29:39live in Ohio you will receive headlines
- 00:29:40related to Ohio and the Midwest before
- 00:29:42getting Regional headlines while viewers
- 00:29:45on the west coast would see Western
- 00:29:46headlines first now while the team
- 00:29:48behind this passion project looked like
- 00:29:50their hearts were in the right place the
- 00:29:51kickstarter wouldn't even get close to
- 00:29:53it $100,000 goal instead it only managed
- 00:29:55to raise a little over $88,000 from $78
- 00:29:58backers whack however this setback did
- 00:30:01not deter Eric gutilla and his team
- 00:30:03after several months of Silence in March
- 00:30:05of 2018 it was announced that the 24/7
- 00:30:07news channel would move forward under
- 00:30:09the new name Newsnet and maintain the
- 00:30:11same concept developed for lnn Newsnet
- 00:30:13would officially launch on New Year's
- 00:30:15Day 2019 with its inaugural programming
- 00:30:17being Evening Edition although the
- 00:30:19network started slowly with one studio
- 00:30:20in Michigan it gradually expanded adding
- 00:30:22new Studios to oversee operations for
- 00:30:24Newsnet by late 2019 Newsnet had secured
- 00:30:27additional Affiliates in various regions
- 00:30:29across the United States including wbn
- 00:30:32in Alban New York wncr in Raleigh North
- 00:30:34Carolina and K and Palm Springs
- 00:30:37California along other smaller stations
- 00:30:39it seemed like Newsnet was actually
- 00:30:41making significant progress yet as you
- 00:30:43already know the co pandemic had
- 00:30:45unfolded news neck continued operations
- 00:30:48but faced Financial pressures to adapt
- 00:30:50they partnered with Coastal televisions
- 00:30:51ABC and fox stations in Anchorage and
- 00:30:53Fairbanks Alaska producing newscasts to
- 00:30:56support those stations ad mid Coastal
- 00:30:58financial difficulties the agreement
- 00:31:00soon expanded to include their Wyoming
- 00:31:01stations in Casper and Chyenne further
- 00:31:04solidifying news Net's presence however
- 00:31:06as the pandemic's impact began to cool
- 00:31:08down in early 2022 Cal ended their
- 00:31:10agreements after acquiring news Hub from
- 00:31:12Waypoint media allowing them to bring
- 00:31:14newscast production in housee later that
- 00:31:17year Mary broadcasting signed an
- 00:31:18agreement with Newsnet for their Georgia
- 00:31:20stations in mancon and tocoa to produce
- 00:31:23a 900 p.m. newscast titled Georgia's
- 00:31:25news at 9: however the agreement was
- 00:31:27shorted mccon as great television
- 00:31:29acquired the station and moved newscast
- 00:31:31production to WF TV similarly the tcoa
- 00:31:34production concluded in 2023 when
- 00:31:36Marquee broadcasting and Newsnet ended
- 00:31:38their partnership while these
- 00:31:39Partnerships ended so quickly it was
- 00:31:41mainly due to what will happen next in
- 00:31:43January of 2022 Newsnet would see new
- 00:31:45management when investor Manor barava
- 00:31:48acquired the network and its Flagship
- 00:31:50stations if that name doesn't sound
- 00:31:51familiar it's the guy who founded 5H
- 00:31:53Hour Energy which had become the most
- 00:31:55popular Energy Shot brands in the US so
- 00:31:57yeah this guy was hella Rich which is
- 00:31:59good because Newsnet was struggling to
- 00:32:00gain money since the beginning as part
- 00:32:02of the transaction Eric gutilla would
- 00:32:04retain only a 10% ownership stake in the
- 00:32:06company whereas barava owned 90%
- 00:32:09following this acquisition barava
- 00:32:11invested an additional 50 million to
- 00:32:13advance the network focusing on
- 00:32:15cost-effective solutions for
- 00:32:16broadcasters and carriers these
- 00:32:18Solutions included localized newscast
- 00:32:20and weather reports features initially
- 00:32:21proposed in the kickstarter campaign
- 00:32:23adding to the Network's growth newset
- 00:32:25introduced a new logo with the slogan
- 00:32:27news as it used to be veteran news
- 00:32:29producer Phil Hendrick whose career
- 00:32:31spans back to the 1990s would join the
- 00:32:33network and become the new news director
- 00:32:35bringing his experience to reshape the
- 00:32:37network schedule under Hendrick's
- 00:32:39leadership programming was reorganized
- 00:32:41and a new weekend news broadcast was
- 00:32:42added to recap the week's top stories in
- 00:32:452022 Newsnet also launched a sports
- 00:32:47counterpart sports news highlight which
- 00:32:49featured clips of major and Niche sports
- 00:32:51events without the typical analysis seen
- 00:32:53on networks like ESPN or Fox Sports
- 00:32:56while it seemed that Newsnet was rapidly
- 00:32:57growing growing uh well in an unexpected
- 00:33:00turn of events on August 2nd 2024 Mano
- 00:33:03barava decided to shut down Newsnet and
- 00:33:06its sports news counterpart after just 2
- 00:33:08years of ownership barava stated that
- 00:33:10the anticipated interest in a clean
- 00:33:11unbiased News Network did not
- 00:33:13materialize quote we believe people
- 00:33:15wanted to watch a clean non-biased
- 00:33:17network but we were wrong what are you
- 00:33:20talking about what for as recent as this
- 00:33:22network is I've never heard of it were
- 00:33:24there even any in
- 00:33:26Chicago uh okay it says there were three
- 00:33:28in Illinois but uh two of them like
- 00:33:30existed for like a year so yeah that
- 00:33:32probably explains it he adds on to say
- 00:33:35that the decision was driven by the
- 00:33:36Network's lack of dedicated audience
- 00:33:38despite having top talent and dedicated
- 00:33:40staff giving it their all they simply
- 00:33:41couldn't continue to operate at a loss
- 00:33:44advertising costs were also another
- 00:33:45critical factor in the decision to shut
- 00:33:47down Newsnet around the time barava
- 00:33:49purchased the channel advertising
- 00:33:51expenses had increased by over 50% this
- 00:33:53financial strain along with the lack of
- 00:33:55audience would be the reason for the
- 00:33:56Network's fast Dem and subsequent layoff
- 00:33:58of 80 employees the mission of Newsnet
- 00:34:01was certainly admirable and based on its
- 00:34:03available archives the network really
- 00:34:05made a commendable effort to deliver
- 00:34:06news in a non-biased manner staying true
- 00:34:09to their
- 00:34:12promise before we continue guys just
- 00:34:14want to give a quick shout out to my
- 00:34:16patreon members your continued support
- 00:34:17really helps fund the channel so I can
- 00:34:19thank you guys enough if you want to
- 00:34:20help support the channel you can always
- 00:34:22become a patron on patreon anyways back
- 00:34:24to the video
- 00:34:30[Music]
- 00:34:40talk about a massive fail while many
- 00:34:41would chock up CNN Plus's quick demise
- 00:34:43to CNN bad CNN cringe CNN fake news the
- 00:34:46reality of it is a bit more complicated
- 00:34:48to put it simply its downfall was
- 00:34:50attributed due to a combination of poor
- 00:34:51timing firings and launching in the
- 00:34:53midst of a merger between two
- 00:34:54conglomerations with that said let's
- 00:34:56wrap up this video by not talking about
- 00:34:57a TV channel but rather a streaming
- 00:34:59service and is own by a TV channel CNN
- 00:35:04plus CNN plus was first announced on
- 00:35:07July 19th 2021 and was originally meant
- 00:35:09as a huge deal for the CNN brand top
- 00:35:11Executives like Jeff Zucker and Andrew
- 00:35:12Morris would described the new service
- 00:35:14as quote the start of a new era and the
- 00:35:16most important launch for CNN since Ted
- 00:35:18Turner started the network in June of
- 00:35:201980 they were just as hype as WWE when
- 00:35:23they lunch their own streaming service
- 00:35:24except you know that was kind of a
- 00:35:26success according to CNN the new service
- 00:35:28would offer 8 to 12 hours of live
- 00:35:30programming daily alongside original
- 00:35:32series interactive features and content
- 00:35:34from the Network's archives I wonder
- 00:35:36what they mean by that like original
- 00:35:37documentaries or national tragedies
- 00:35:39could viewers watch the Challenger
- 00:35:41explode in 4k is what I'm trying to say
- 00:35:43mors emphasize that CNN plus would
- 00:35:45feature exclusive content not available
- 00:35:46on the main Channel hoping that it could
- 00:35:48expand on topics like climate change and
- 00:35:50science subscribers could also interact
- 00:35:52with CNN personalities so if you wanted
- 00:35:54to tell Anderson Cooper he had a weird
- 00:35:55laugh you could sorry
- 00:36:00CNN would go all in with this service
- 00:36:02investing over $300 million for original
- 00:36:04programming and creating $450 new jobs
- 00:36:06which included producers engineers and
- 00:36:08marketers along with this High goal in
- 00:36:10mind they brought in anchors from the
- 00:36:12main Channel such as Wolf Blitzer Jake
- 00:36:14Tapper Anderson Cooper and fared Zakaria
- 00:36:16to host their own shows for the service
- 00:36:17they would even go as far to scalp
- 00:36:19Talent from other news organizations
- 00:36:21including NBC's Cassie hunt and Fox News
- 00:36:23is Chris Wallace who had left hosting a
- 00:36:25Sunday Morning Show for 18 years and as
- 00:36:27often regarded as one of the few Fox
- 00:36:29News anchors who is actually impartial
- 00:36:30and respected a rare cnnw with the
- 00:36:33support from Warner media CNN believed
- 00:36:35that it could revolutionize paid news
- 00:36:37streaming the same way it did with cable
- 00:36:38news in the 1980s and online news in the
- 00:36:419s however CNN plus was Doom from the
- 00:36:44start a month before his announcement in
- 00:36:45July of 2021 headlines began to emerge
- 00:36:47about a possible merger between Warner
- 00:36:49media and Discovery Inc as with many
- 00:36:51mergers corporate shakeups often lead to
- 00:36:53changes in plans and operations and CNN
- 00:36:55plus was no exception to make matters
- 00:36:57worse just 2 months before the service
- 00:36:59launch CNN president Jeff Zucker
- 00:37:01resigned from his position surprisingly
- 00:37:03this wasn't the result of the upcoming
- 00:37:04merger instead Zucker stepped down after
- 00:37:06failing to disclose a romantic
- 00:37:07relationship with another senior
- 00:37:09executive at CNN I was wrong Zucker
- 00:37:12wrote with Zucker out of the picture the
- 00:37:14long-term vision for CNN plus was
- 00:37:16essentially up in the air 3 weeks after
- 00:37:18his resignation CNN found a successor in
- 00:37:20Chris lick whose own tenure at CNN would
- 00:37:23be even shorter than Zucker as the
- 00:37:24merger between Warner media and
- 00:37:26Discovery Inc neared complet the future
- 00:37:28CEO of wbd David zlab along with it
- 00:37:31discoveries leaders were already
- 00:37:32skeptical of CNN plus despite that they
- 00:37:35were willing to give CNN plus an
- 00:37:36opportunity to see if it could surpass
- 00:37:38their initial low expectations that
- 00:37:40being said on March 29th 2022 CNN plus
- 00:37:43would finally launch at $5.99 a month or
- 00:37:45$59.99 per year early subscribers who'd
- 00:37:49signed up within the first four weeks
- 00:37:50will have access to the quote deal of a
- 00:37:52lifetime which is 50% off the monthly
- 00:37:54plan for life as long as they remain
- 00:37:55subscribed to the service you think
- 00:37:57would an offer that good you'd have
- 00:37:59millions sign up for the service well
- 00:38:01within the first week it was reported by
- 00:38:03Bloomberg that CNN plus had only 100,000
- 00:38:06subscribers within the first week with
- 00:38:07only one tenth of those users engaging
- 00:38:09on a daily basis and while that number
- 00:38:11isn't bad God damn I'd killed for
- 00:38:13100,000 subscribers for a legacy brand
- 00:38:15like CNN it was a shocking statistic
- 00:38:17they expected 2 million people to
- 00:38:19subscribe to this in the first year and
- 00:38:21were aiming for 15 to 18 million after
- 00:38:23the first four years because of the low
- 00:38:25turnout investment for the service was
- 00:38:26drastically cut at launch CNN plus
- 00:38:29received a lukewarm response the service
- 00:38:31simply lacked any reason to watch I'm
- 00:38:33not going to go in depth on any of these
- 00:38:34shows because honestly who cares at this
- 00:38:36point but to sum it up most of the shows
- 00:38:38were magazine style programs featuring
- 00:38:39CNN personalities offering light news
- 00:38:42coverage and interviews which kind of
- 00:38:44makes CNN plus sound like a repackaged
- 00:38:45version of CNN airport this is just my
- 00:38:48speculation but considering that CNN
- 00:38:50plus was announced shortly after the
- 00:38:51airport service Clos it just gives the
- 00:38:54illusion that this was almost like a
- 00:38:55successor of some sorts but that's just
- 00:38:57my theory perhaps one of the biggest
- 00:38:59drawbacks was the lack of having live
- 00:39:00CNN coverage although never promised
- 00:39:02you'd at least expect live TV in some
- 00:39:04form I mean for example you have
- 00:39:06services like CBS or NBC that offer some
- 00:39:09form of 24/7 live coverage and for free
- 00:39:11too so I just don't see why they didn't
- 00:39:13do it most of the pr CNN plus received
- 00:39:15came from the fact that it was at free
- 00:39:16but again nobody really cared for this
- 00:39:18content I guess the archival library is
- 00:39:20cool the only thing I found interesting
- 00:39:22where Larry King interviews but even I
- 00:39:23don't think that was worth $6 a month
- 00:39:25overall there's really no reason for you
- 00:39:27to get this unless you were a super fan
- 00:39:28of CNN and let's face it there weren't
- 00:39:30really that many to begin with after
- 00:39:32just 3 weeks CNN plus peaked at around
- 00:39:34150,000 subscribers with Warner's
- 00:39:37Discovery now fully operational the
- 00:39:39company had plans to merge Discovery
- 00:39:41plus and HBO Max into one unified
- 00:39:43streaming service unfortunately CNN plus
- 00:39:45was deemed incompatible with that vision
- 00:39:47and so on April 21st it was announced
- 00:39:49that CNN plus would be shutting down as
- 00:39:51mentioned at the beginning of the entry
- 00:39:53CNN plus had several obstacles ahead of
- 00:39:55its launch that quickly killed the
- 00:39:56service the first first blow came when
- 00:39:58Jeff Zucker the Project's driving force
- 00:40:00left CNN just before the launch leaving
- 00:40:02the service without any clear Direction
- 00:40:04the content was also problematic with no
- 00:40:06live news coverage the platform was left
- 00:40:08with shows that didn't attract much
- 00:40:10interest I mean who really wants to see
- 00:40:11Parental Guidance with Anderson Cooper
- 00:40:13or the dawn lemon show I don't even know
- 00:40:15what that is next the merger between
- 00:40:17Warner media and Discovery further
- 00:40:19complicated things while Warner media
- 00:40:20were rooting for the service's success
- 00:40:22the people over at Discovery were
- 00:40:23skeptical about it and with its low
- 00:40:25subscription rate CNN Plus Executives
- 00:40:28expected the streaming service to
- 00:40:29surpass the cable Network's $500 million
- 00:40:31profit within a decade and I just think
- 00:40:33it was that long expectancy that made
- 00:40:35cutting losses seem wise lastly though
- 00:40:37not directly responsible for its failure
- 00:40:39but it's worth mentioning would have to
- 00:40:40be the reputation CNN has received in
- 00:40:42recent years for his political leaning
- 00:40:44views which has affected its overall
- 00:40:46brand perception that's not to say
- 00:40:48something with a political bias is
- 00:40:49automatically set to fail I mean there
- 00:40:51are plenty of services with a bias like
- 00:40:52the New York Times and Fox Nation that
- 00:40:54both rank in millions of subscribers but
- 00:40:56again it just goes back to the content
- 00:40:58and I think CNN plus fell short on that
- 00:41:00end CNN plus would officially cease
- 00:41:02operations on April 28th 2022 after just
- 00:41:0530 days of service holding the record as
- 00:41:07the shortest Liv service under the
- 00:41:08Turner Broadcasting umbrella beating the
- 00:41:10record of the also shortlived cable
- 00:41:12Music Channel by just 5 days I covered
- 00:41:15this back in the first episode of
- 00:41:16discontinued Nostalgia so go check that
- 00:41:18out if you haven't the end of CNN plus
- 00:41:20wouldn't be the end of CNN's journey
- 00:41:22into streaming though as in 2023 Warner
- 00:41:24Brother discovery's current streaming
- 00:41:26service Max would announced a new
- 00:41:27streaming Hub named CNN Max which
- 00:41:30features a mix of original news programs
- 00:41:32and simcast of prime time programs from
- 00:41:34CNN's us and international linear
- 00:41:36networks while I haven't checked that
- 00:41:38out for myself it has lasted longer than
- 00:41:39CNN plus so yeah that's worth
- 00:41:42[Music]
- 00:41:45mentioning well everyone those were
- 00:41:47eight discontinued news channels and
- 00:41:48services hopefully I was able to present
- 00:41:50this in a non-bias way let let's be real
- 00:41:52I really tried guys come on hopefully
- 00:41:54this video teaches me to never talk
- 00:41:56about politics on this channel Channel
