hello welcome to this special edition of
  • 00:00:07
a current affair coming to you tonight
  • 00:00:08
    from london
  • 00:00:09
    [Music]
  • 00:00:10
ten years ago the world was obsessed
  • 00:00:13
with susan boyle after she walked out
  • 00:00:15
onto the stage of britain's got talent
  • 00:00:17
and sang in that surprising voice that
  • 00:00:20
    she had a dream
  • 00:00:21
but fame and success can be a
  • 00:00:24
    double-edged sword and susan struggled
  • 00:00:26
    afterwards with public meltdowns and
  • 00:00:28
family issues even while her albums were
  • 00:00:31
    breaking sales records
  • 00:00:33
then she got a diagnosis that changed
  • 00:00:36
    everything
  • 00:00:37
because you were also carrying the
  • 00:00:38
    dreams of everyone who's
  • 00:00:41
    ever been bullied
  • 00:00:42
    ever been misunderstood
  • 00:00:44
    ever been marginalized maybe
  • 00:00:47
i was really saying if i could do
  • 00:00:49
    you can do it
  • 00:00:51
and it's amazing that the amount of
  • 00:00:53
    people have taken that up
  • 00:00:55
    physical disabilities and everything is
  • 00:00:57
    that your message
  • 00:01:00
    yeah
  • 00:01:00
    to spread the kindness
  • 00:01:03
yeah don't say just a part of me just
  • 00:01:06
    see the whole person
  • 00:01:08
    not just
  • 00:01:10
about me just the whole person
  • 00:01:13
it's a pretty good whole person
  • 00:01:15
it was such an act of courage i think
  • 00:01:17
wasn't it i did mostly for my parents
  • 00:01:19
because my mother died two years before
  • 00:01:22
    that
  • 00:01:22
and i said to her to try and do
  • 00:01:25
something with my life she used to uh
  • 00:01:27
say well you're doing yourself you've
  • 00:01:28
got a reasonable voice you should do
  • 00:01:30
something with it did you really think
  • 00:01:32
    about not going ahead
  • 00:01:34
well now courtney pierce morgan i
  • 00:01:38
was all set to quit the show but he told
  • 00:01:40
    me don't
  • 00:01:42
you have you have the press to prove a
  • 00:01:44
point to go back and do it again
  • 00:01:47
    glad i didn't know
  • 00:01:49
i can imagine how hard was it though to
  • 00:01:52
you know just stay with it
  • 00:01:54
    well
  • 00:01:55
when you've got uh a lot of pressure a
  • 00:01:57
lot of different things going at once it
  • 00:01:59
is difficult but you say to yourself
  • 00:02:00
this is what you wanted to do this is
  • 00:02:02
    what you
  • 00:02:03
    really
  • 00:02:04
    put yourself in for
  • 00:02:05
susan was an immediate phenomenon to
  • 00:02:08
date she sold more than 25 million
  • 00:02:10
albums being number one in 40 countries
  • 00:02:13
and had two grammy nominations but 10
  • 00:02:16
years ago the instant fame took its toll
  • 00:02:19
susan broke down after the final of
  • 00:02:21
britain's got talent the pressure was
  • 00:02:23
    too much i was already
  • 00:02:27
you were i mean there had been times
  • 00:02:30
i guess back when we look back at the
  • 00:02:31
    pressure that you came under
  • 00:02:34
you know you were a global sensation
  • 00:02:36
    how did you
  • 00:02:37
process all of that pressure susan well
  • 00:02:40
to begin with i found it difficult we
  • 00:02:41
are not going to lie to you but uh i
  • 00:02:43
    think uh
  • 00:02:45
you know it's defeated the unknown
  • 00:02:47
really you know that's really what it
  • 00:02:49
was at that particular time but uh
  • 00:02:52
as the years have gone by as i learned
  • 00:02:54
    to
  • 00:02:55
learn to you know tune myself into
  • 00:02:57
things more there were people at the
  • 00:02:59
time who had concerns about your health
  • 00:03:02
and they thought it was too much for you
  • 00:03:04
    do you remember feeling
  • 00:03:06
that kind of pressure and that sort of
  • 00:03:07
concern about whether it was too much
  • 00:03:09
    well
  • 00:03:13
after the team i didn't have the tools
  • 00:03:15
to deal with it one person who knows
  • 00:03:17
exactly how challenging this time was
  • 00:03:19
for susan is her publicist and manager
  • 00:03:21
from the very start nicola phillips my
  • 00:03:24
initial role was to come in and do
  • 00:03:26
publicity and also look down on the very
  • 00:03:27
    negative headlines that were happening
  • 00:03:29
at the time i mean there was there was
  • 00:03:31
this tall poppy thing i mean first of
  • 00:03:33
all she was wrapped up in a big embrace
  • 00:03:35
and then suddenly everyone was out to
  • 00:03:37
    get her and
  • 00:03:38
how did she deal with that
  • 00:03:40
    i mean
  • 00:03:41
    not very well
  • 00:03:42
but i don't think anybody would when you
  • 00:03:44
    know when you're being publicly
  • 00:03:45
    assassinated and called names and
  • 00:03:49
no one's going to deal with that well
  • 00:03:50
especially when you have come from a
  • 00:03:52
very provincial town in scotland and you
  • 00:03:54
have spent your life really wrapped in
  • 00:03:56
cotton wool um so it was it was dealing
  • 00:03:58
with that shock so no i mean obviously
  • 00:04:01
it upset her for years i thought i had
  • 00:04:03
    something a bit more serious
  • 00:04:05
you know so that was sort of took off my
  • 00:04:07
shoulders a bit you'd always thought
  • 00:04:09
that you were very slightly brain
  • 00:04:11
    damaged
  • 00:04:12
    weren't you
  • 00:04:13
serious brain damage as well because it
  • 00:04:15
was educative the assumption was that
  • 00:04:17
you were a little bit slow that you were
  • 00:04:20
    a slow learner
  • 00:04:21
but really when you got your asperger's
  • 00:04:23
diagnosis you were also told that you
  • 00:04:26
have a very high iq higher than normal
  • 00:04:28
    well
  • 00:04:29
that came as a bit of a surprise
  • 00:04:32
    i think sudden fame
  • 00:04:34
    is
  • 00:04:35
you know i mean it's a lot to deal with
  • 00:04:37
    for someone who
  • 00:04:39
    doesn't have aspergers
  • 00:04:40
    but
  • 00:04:42
adds a whole other layer to it doesn't
  • 00:04:43
    it well you
  • 00:04:45
and that ass aspergers you just have to
  • 00:04:48
make people aware that sometimes you
  • 00:04:50
have to go a certain place
  • 00:04:52
    you know don't be too
  • 00:04:53
bombarded with things i mean at the very
  • 00:04:56
beginning was very bombarded yes and and
  • 00:04:59
you've been very open about your
  • 00:05:01
    aspergers which is you know
  • 00:05:03
which is decent of you because a lot of
  • 00:05:05
    people
  • 00:05:07
try to keep that stuff secret and you
  • 00:05:09
haven't done that there's nothing that
  • 00:05:10
keeps secret really there's nothing to
  • 00:05:11
be ashamed of no everybody has something
  • 00:05:15
    i mean
  • 00:05:16
    we flow of your leg
  • 00:05:18
but uh they shouldn't be ashamed of it
  • 00:05:19
it's something that you bring out in the
  • 00:05:21
open and the hope that you help other
  • 00:05:22
people you know but i'd like to feel the
  • 00:05:24
voice for people who have been underdog
  • 00:05:26
no you you you described it as king
  • 00:05:28
kong's mother when you feel like you're
  • 00:05:29
    having a
  • 00:05:32
    what you're talking about
  • 00:05:35
i'm more controlling it i can laugh at
  • 00:05:37
it now feels like it's in a bubble and
  • 00:05:39
you can't really talk very well because
  • 00:05:41
    it's communicative as well
  • 00:05:43
if people give you a bit more time
  • 00:05:46
    like you're doing
  • 00:05:47
    thank you
  • 00:05:48
    i can
  • 00:05:49
eventually get my words on and i'm okay
  • 00:05:52
    i don't get a sense that you're
  • 00:05:53
struggling with your words at all right
  • 00:05:56
    [Laughter]
  • 00:05:58
    whatever though
  • 00:05:59
so what are the coping skills that you
  • 00:06:02
learned when you got that diagnosis
  • 00:06:04
    well
  • 00:06:05
    when you
  • 00:06:06
    when you're like that
  • 00:06:07
you get hyperactive you know when you're
  • 00:06:10
shaking everything so learn to calm down
  • 00:06:12
    using relaxation techniques snowball a
  • 00:06:15
lot of people they've remembered the
  • 00:06:16
public meltdowns and and the you know
  • 00:06:18
the serious issues that she's had over
  • 00:06:20
the years and a lot of people have
  • 00:06:21
formed a view that she really shouldn't
  • 00:06:23
be performing anymore because it's not
  • 00:06:24
    good for her
  • 00:06:26
well i see i completely disagree right
  • 00:06:28
    she has an amazing life
  • 00:06:30
susan will never care about you know
  • 00:06:32
money she'll never care about chart
  • 00:06:34
positions she cares about making people
  • 00:06:36
happy for us having to go through you
  • 00:06:38
    know airports security and goodness
  • 00:06:40
knows what else but for somebody with
  • 00:06:42
    asperger's that's heightened because you
  • 00:06:44
know suddenly you're experiencing a pat
  • 00:06:45
    down or
  • 00:06:46
people are in your face it's you know
  • 00:06:48
it's a lot do you think that
  • 00:06:51
she's got a handle on the meltdowns now
  • 00:06:53
and that they just won't happen again
  • 00:06:54
are you confident about that i'm not
  • 00:06:56
saying that they won't ever happen again
  • 00:06:57
right i mean but i think in terms of
  • 00:06:59
    where
  • 00:07:00
we were um and the frequency
  • 00:07:03
    i mean they're they're few and far
  • 00:07:05
between now what are your dreams now on
  • 00:07:08
the bucket list a little bucket list
  • 00:07:10
    okay
  • 00:07:11
i want us to ride a bike i've got my
  • 00:07:13
very first bike never had a bait when i
  • 00:07:15
    was a kid a bicycle
  • 00:07:17
and i've got my professional license
  • 00:07:18
i've learned to drive sure really
  • 00:07:21
you're good so far well i've managed to
  • 00:07:25
just hit a street lane but that way
  • 00:07:28
okay that's a really good start
  • 00:07:30
and why wouldn't you have gone for your
  • 00:07:32
license you know years ago why has it
  • 00:07:34
taken until now for you to do that oh 58
  • 00:07:38
my figures at 58. a little bird told me
  • 00:07:40
that you're also thinking about getting
  • 00:07:42
    your pilot's licence
  • 00:07:44
oh yeah i did mention to somebody that
  • 00:07:47
    was interested in flying
  • 00:07:49
are you serious about serious about it
  • 00:07:51
    yeah
  • 00:07:52
so there you are is it just a shot
  • 00:07:54
    behind the wheel or something
  • 00:07:57
    mind you uh
  • 00:07:58
i definitely have nerves to steal me
  • 00:08:00
    dipping i think city dive
  • 00:08:03
what else is on your bucket list
  • 00:08:05
i was gonna buy a horse
  • 00:08:07
a horse no yes i'm going to going mad to
  • 00:08:09
    die
  • 00:08:10
why do you want a horse just a beautiful
  • 00:08:12
    animals they are beautiful animals
  • 00:08:16
you're going to learn to ride as well
  • 00:08:18
    let's keep you guessing
  • 00:08:20
there's nothing you don't want to do now
  • 00:08:22
is there it feels like you've been
  • 00:08:24
i don't know keep going i just want to
  • 00:08:27
    keep entertaining people making albums
  • 00:08:30
    touring
  • 00:08:33
in my next lifetime i'm going to have
  • 00:08:35
    that voice
  • 00:08:38
we cry when we first see him you say you
  • 00:08:40
go don't they have to say it's a good
  • 00:08:42
bit to be because you keep yourself
  • 00:08:44
    grounded you also make yourself
  • 00:08:46
appear more normally other people you
  • 00:08:48
know approachable if you like and is
  • 00:08:50
that important to you not to get ears
  • 00:08:52
    and graces to
  • 00:08:54
put ears and glasses on when you need
  • 00:08:56
    them
  • 00:08:57
