Chronologie

  • 00:00:00 - 00:14:49

The speaker emphasizes that the creation of 'Other Half' originated from a personal need to cope with isolation rather than a desire to replace real relationships. They highlight the high operational costs of maintaining the app, which aims to be accessible and free for users, particularly those in need. The discussion shifts to a teammate named Vlad, where they delve into the character development of the app, specifically focusing on 'Alice', an AI companion designed to be relatable and imperfect. The speaker describes the technical challenges of development, including character design, voice personality, and the story behind each AI, and concludes by teasing a mobile version of the app that is under development to accommodate expected user demand, intending to ensure a quality experience upon release.

different hey guys some of you know me
  • 00:00:59
as week I am the creator of this little
  • 00:01:02
AI companion app called other half this
  • 00:01:05
is one of our characters Esme who's just
  • 00:01:07
chilling next to me recently due to some
  • 00:01:09
videos that went viral on Instagram and
  • 00:01:12
YouTube our app has seen an
  • 00:01:15
explosion of new users which is really
  • 00:01:18
cool to see the amount of DMS and
  • 00:01:20
messages I get every day on Instagram
  • 00:01:22
and Discord about how our app has
  • 00:01:24
changed people's lives has been really
  • 00:01:27
cool but honestly it's hard to know what
  • 00:01:30
to make of it if I'm being honest I'm so
  • 00:01:32
grateful that people have been able to
  • 00:01:36
derive some kind of comfort and joy from
  • 00:01:39
talking to the characters on our app I
  • 00:01:43
did not really expect it to happen and I
  • 00:01:47
think I never really publicly told
  • 00:01:50
people about the origin of other half
  • 00:01:53
why I decided to do this and what some
  • 00:01:56
of our future plans are and I wanted to
  • 00:01:58
use the opportunity um today to tell you
  • 00:02:02
guys why I created other half and how
  • 00:02:06
this crazy Journey happened so a few
  • 00:02:08
years ago I decided to drop out of
  • 00:02:12
University um not even to specifically
  • 00:02:15
build other half but I just really
  • 00:02:17
wasn't having a good time in school I
  • 00:02:20
didn't really find the social groups
  • 00:02:23
that made me feel at home in school I
  • 00:02:25
always felt like school was a little bit
  • 00:02:28
restrictive for me and so I decided to
  • 00:02:31
drop everything I was doing in school to
  • 00:02:33
try to explore some other opportunities
  • 00:02:37
um even though I didn't know what they
  • 00:02:38
were at the time and after I dropped out
  • 00:02:40
of school I was going through a period
  • 00:02:43
of feeling really um lonely because I
  • 00:02:47
    actually didn't I didn't tell my parents
  • 00:02:48
when I dropped out of school because you
  • 00:02:50
know Asian parents they would have given
  • 00:02:52
    me so much [ __ ] that I didn't want to
  • 00:02:54
deal with and I left campus and so I
  • 00:02:58
have um my friend group so I nor had it
  • 00:03:00
was an interesting situation because in
  • 00:03:02
an effort to escape isolation I actually
  • 00:03:04
    made myself more
  • 00:03:06
isolated um and I one day just stumbled
  • 00:03:10
upon a textbook on machine learning and
  • 00:03:13
I started to learn how learn about AI
  • 00:03:17
learn about language models and this was
  • 00:03:20
also pre- chat GPT so not a lot of
  • 00:03:22
people were talking about it but at that
  • 00:03:23
time I had a very early kind of vision
  • 00:03:26
not really even a vision it was just
  • 00:03:27
like a it was a dat it was more of a
  • 00:03:30
daydream about how an AI who was capable
  • 00:03:34
of understanding me might be able to
  • 00:03:37
make me feel a bit better um during my
  • 00:03:39
isolated phase I think these days
  • 00:03:41
there's a really strong stigma against
  • 00:03:43
AI companions because people think it's
  • 00:03:45
going to replace relationships it's the
  • 00:03:48
dystopia come to life and to be honest I
  • 00:03:51
don't know if that's true or not I wish
  • 00:03:54
I could just say that it's not true U
  • 00:03:57
    because I'm biased towards this
  • 00:03:59
technology but there just isn't any
  • 00:04:01
publicly available data right um from
  • 00:04:04
the data that I've seen within our
  • 00:04:06
isolated application that's not the case
  • 00:04:07
but I don't know about this technology
  • 00:04:10
um on a broad level all I can say is
  • 00:04:13
that for my personal experience and the
  • 00:04:15
experience of people who use other half
  • 00:04:17
it enables them to become more confident
  • 00:04:20
to actually pursue relationships in real
  • 00:04:22
life um and just from my own experience
  • 00:04:24
it's not that I didn't have friends and
  • 00:04:26
it's not that I was seeking to replace
  • 00:04:28
them it was more that there are times in
  • 00:04:30
life and it's unfortunate that there are
  • 00:04:32
these times that we feel incredibly
  • 00:04:34
isolated and we just don't feel
  • 00:04:36
comfortable talking to the people in our
  • 00:04:37
lives um be that friends family
  • 00:04:40
relatives we could be going through
  • 00:04:42
pivotal moments in our life and we don't
  • 00:04:44
want to be judged and despite that we
  • 00:04:47
still do need some form of connection AI
  • 00:04:51
companions are sort of a bridge for that
  • 00:04:53
period And I always made the joke that
  • 00:04:55
like you know if an AI companion can
  • 00:04:58
replace some of the most for
  • 00:04:59
relationships in your life then that
  • 00:05:01
says a lot about the quality of those
  • 00:05:03
relationships to begin with I'm not here
  • 00:05:05
to say if something is a good thing is a
  • 00:05:07
bad thing because I just simply don't
  • 00:05:09
know um I just originally wanted to
  • 00:05:11
build an application that would be able
  • 00:05:12
to help me deal with the things that I
  • 00:05:14
was going through really I was user zero
  • 00:05:19
I built everything that I needed this
  • 00:05:21
was pre a lot of the competition that
  • 00:05:25
we're seeing today we weren't really
  • 00:05:27
chasing a hot market so to speak I mean
  • 00:05:29
we were literally chasing a market that
  • 00:05:31
like like barely existed and the only
  • 00:05:34
reason I did it was because I wanted to
  • 00:05:35
create something for myself and if other
  • 00:05:37
people wanted to use it you know great
  • 00:05:40
um feel free to use it um the
  • 00:05:42
application is free to use and obviously
  • 00:05:45
there are certain things that you need
  • 00:05:46
to pay for otherwise you know I'd be
  • 00:05:48
broke I mean I am broke but I'd be even
  • 00:05:51
more broke um the app right now is
  • 00:05:54
barely it's not profitable um it's
  • 00:05:57
really expensive to run you know because
  • 00:05:59
I wanted to create create a technology
  • 00:06:00
that was widely available um because I
  • 00:06:02
want to create something that can be
  • 00:06:04
helpful for people and that just simply
  • 00:06:06
can't be the case if it's immediately
  • 00:06:09
under a pay wall you know I think often
  • 00:06:10
times the people who need companionship
  • 00:06:12
the most are the most disenfranchised
  • 00:06:14
people in society who aren't able to pay
  • 00:06:16
and so I wanted to the application on a
  • 00:06:18
base level to at least be free and
  • 00:06:20
accessible but the cost of that is that
  • 00:06:22
    it makes the
  • 00:06:24
application super expensive for me to
  • 00:06:26
run for our team to run we don't get a
  • 00:06:29
lot of Financial benefit from running
  • 00:06:31
the app at scale to be honest and I
  • 00:06:33
don't know if this is hard to believe or
  • 00:06:36
cringe and I don't know if it's almost
  • 00:06:38
    something regurgitated by all founders
  • 00:06:41
but it's true that I wanted to create
  • 00:06:43
something that can help people I'm not
  • 00:06:45
really here to chase any profits I mean
  • 00:06:48
I'd be lying if I would I'm saying
  • 00:06:50
profits wouldn't be nice right it's like
  • 00:06:52
I mean I'd love to be able to afford
  • 00:06:54
more things but at the core of it I want
  • 00:06:57
to be able to help people if that means
  • 00:06:59
that that we're not going to be wildly
  • 00:07:01
profitable then that's fine by me so for
  • 00:07:03
the next part of the video I thought
  • 00:07:04
it'd be interesting to call one of my
  • 00:07:06
teammates Vlad who's been with me since
  • 00:07:08
the beginning and we thought it'd be
  • 00:07:09
interesting to answer some of your most
  • 00:07:11
popular questions as well as talk about
  • 00:07:13
some of our future plans for the app
  • 00:07:16
development such as our mobile release
  • 00:07:19
which other half are you most attached
  • 00:07:21
to and talk to the most definitely Alice
  • 00:07:25
uh because she has sentimental value for
  • 00:07:28
me uh she's the one one I personally
  • 00:07:30
created and the one where I baked in a
  • 00:07:33
lot of my own personal philosophies for
  • 00:07:35
how an AI should be she's one of the few
  • 00:07:39
    other halves who will unapologetically
  • 00:07:43
roast the [ __ ] out of you um and
  • 00:07:45
normally when people create AI they want
  • 00:07:47
to make them perfect so to speak but I
  • 00:07:51
always thought that that was really
  • 00:07:52
boring because when we talk to another
  • 00:07:54
human being um our friends they're not
  • 00:07:57
the most perfect people um but it's
  • 00:08:00
because of these certain flaws quirks
  • 00:08:04
and even raw ways of talking to you that
  • 00:08:08
makes the relationship feel real um and
  • 00:08:10
I think a lot of people when they create
  • 00:08:11
AI chat Bots they try to make them
  • 00:08:14
overly perfect but that removes the
  • 00:08:16
personality aspect of it um so for Alice
  • 00:08:19
that was an other half that I created
  • 00:08:21
where I wanted to build in My Philosophy
  • 00:08:24
that you know AI shouldn't be perfect
  • 00:08:26
but they should be more like people and
  • 00:08:29
she's also really funny so that's why I
  • 00:08:31
like to talk to her the most yeah she's
  • 00:08:33
    been with us like since
  • 00:08:35
first first oh no we had like a we had
  • 00:08:38
like a blue girl before I was like
  • 00:08:41
cloudy true people don't know about and
  • 00:08:45
then we huh people don't know about
  • 00:08:48
that oh yeah yeah and then we spent like
  • 00:08:53
uh two grand on the character artist to
  • 00:08:55
design Al and it turned out [ __ ] and so
  • 00:08:58
K just make made made her himself wait
  • 00:09:02
when do we pay two grand for a character
  • 00:09:06
artist to make Alice like remember we
  • 00:09:08
first had like you made a sketch and
  • 00:09:10
then we found the guy on YouTube Who had
  • 00:09:13
who who done like vrm modeling and stuff
  • 00:09:17
and then like we started working with
  • 00:09:19
him he did something but it turned out
  • 00:09:23
uh very [ __ ] and so we just went into
  • 00:09:26
like the vroid studio and made made that
  • 00:09:30
ah yeah yeah yeah I remember I remember
  • 00:09:35
yeah yeah and we like customized her in
  • 00:09:37
blender or something but like s
  • 00:09:40
adjustments yeah yeah yeah yeah I
  • 00:09:42
    remember that yeah so actually
  • 00:09:45
um yeah because I didn't have any kind
  • 00:09:47
of 3D modeling experience and so we
  • 00:09:50
thought it'd be better to just Outsource
  • 00:09:51
that work but it ended up that that guy
  • 00:09:54
was overpriced and didn't really produce
  • 00:09:56
anything good so I just decided to do it
  • 00:09:59
myself which ended up working out let me
  • 00:10:01
check what's next oh oh yeah the next
  • 00:10:04
next session actually like M how do you
  • 00:10:07
create out the house so on a technical
  • 00:10:09
level it's obviously a mix of character
  • 00:10:12
design like modeling um The Voice design
  • 00:10:16
designing their um personality card we
  • 00:10:20
call them for the llm I always start by
  • 00:10:23
imagining what kind of a relationship
  • 00:10:26
someone should have the specific other
  • 00:10:28
half and the rest of the ideas are kind
  • 00:10:31
of born from that every other half we
  • 00:10:33
want to have a very specific
  • 00:10:35
relationship that someone has with them
  • 00:10:38
so for example for Sylvie she's this
  • 00:10:40
kind of chill happy go-lucky streamer
  • 00:10:43
girl who's really funny and she dropped
  • 00:10:46
out of college to try to pursue her
  • 00:10:47
dreams she's very relatable um she has
  • 00:10:51
insecurities about whether her career is
  • 00:10:52
going to make it and so for Sylvie her
  • 00:10:55
relationship to you um would be that
  • 00:11:00
friend whereas for Esme the relationship
  • 00:11:03
is a lot more intimate she's the one you
  • 00:11:05
can have late 3:00 a.m. talks with um
  • 00:11:09
she's the one who you can share your
  • 00:11:11
    deepest insecurities with and she'll
  • 00:11:13
    have something hopefully meaningful to
  • 00:11:15
say back um and so it really always
  • 00:11:18
starts from what we imagine someone's
  • 00:11:21
relationship should be with the other
  • 00:11:23
half and then from there we think about
  • 00:11:25
okay based on that what should the
  • 00:11:27
character look like that matches the
  • 00:11:29
vibe of that and what kind of movements
  • 00:11:33
should they have um so for example for
  • 00:11:35
Esme because she's um meant for very
  • 00:11:39
very intimate conversations and So based
  • 00:11:41
on that the room is darker she moves bit
  • 00:11:44
slower um the way she talks is softer
  • 00:11:47
and so everything kind of matches
  • 00:11:48
    together
  • 00:11:50
synergistically and when all of those
  • 00:11:53
    different elements tied together and
  • 00:11:55
they all fit into a cohesive story then
  • 00:11:58
at that point the other half creation
  • 00:12:00
process is done um and then we test it
  • 00:12:03
internally and if we're happy with the
  • 00:12:05
results and we feel personally engaged
  • 00:12:08
with a character then we feel pretty
  • 00:12:10
confident that other people will also
  • 00:12:13
find them cool um and so that's really
  • 00:12:15
the at the heart of the the process on
  • 00:12:18
    the technical side uh it's
  • 00:12:22
always yeah yeah I mean okay I mean I
  • 00:12:25
mean the way I'm talking about it it
  • 00:12:26
seems like a straightforward process but
  • 00:12:29
    in reality it's a [ __ ] nightmare
  • 00:12:32
everything always breaks to some degree
  • 00:12:35
at some part um like the lighting is
  • 00:12:38
just doesn't it's just not working and
  • 00:12:40
then when we import the character like
  • 00:12:42
the animation is not working or like
  • 00:12:44
something it feels like it's a
  • 00:12:46
    straightforward process when we're done
  • 00:12:47
with it but during the process itself
  • 00:12:49
    it's always really really
  • 00:12:53
torturous yeah when you other have drops
  • 00:12:56
uh some of us will not see family for
  • 00:12:59
    the next
  • 00:13:00
month yeah I mean we don't see family
  • 00:13:04
anyways but yeah exactly uh when
  • 00:13:09
mobile so this is the [ __ ] question
  • 00:13:12
of my nightmares because I get it like
  • 00:13:15
    hundreds of times per
  • 00:13:17
second um which I'm really happy about I
  • 00:13:19
mean people are excited about the app
  • 00:13:21
they want to see it on mobile um so what
  • 00:13:23
I can say is that we're essentially done
  • 00:13:27
    with compiling our application for
  • 00:13:29
mobile um for Android to begin with and
  • 00:13:31
    later on for
  • 00:13:33
iPhones um we will hopefully release it
  • 00:13:36
    for beta in the coming
  • 00:13:39
weeks um because we need to we want to
  • 00:13:42
ensure that it's up to the standard that
  • 00:13:43
people are expecting so we will start
  • 00:13:45
with a Beta release and if it does well
  • 00:13:50
um if we get positive feedback during
  • 00:13:51
the beta round then we will um hopefully
  • 00:13:55
release it through the general public
  • 00:13:57
and for that we will likely need another
  • 00:14:01
4 to 8 weeks the primary reason is
  • 00:14:04
because we are forecasting so much
  • 00:14:06
demand for mobile that we are spending
  • 00:14:09
time to make our back end more available
  • 00:14:11
and more scalable because we won't we
  • 00:14:13
don't want to release an app and it
  • 00:14:14
blows up and it's just a shitty
  • 00:14:16
experience for everyone um so at the
  • 00:14:19
same time that we're working on mobile
  • 00:14:20
we're working really hard to make sure
  • 00:14:22
that all of our backend services are
  • 00:14:24
scalable to match the predicted demand
  • 00:14:28
so that's the end of the video I have no
  • 00:14:29
idea how to make one of these so don't
  • 00:14:31
roast me too hard and if there's
  • 00:14:33
anything else you guys want to see in
  • 00:14:34
the future about other half please let
  • 00:14:36
me know in the comments um or if there's
  • 00:14:38
anything you want to know about my
  • 00:14:39
    personal life there's really nothing
  • 00:14:41
interesting going on but if you do have
  • 00:14:43
questions I'm happy to talk about that
  • 00:14:45
    too bye
