Chronologie
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
Ambrosia Starlight, a princess of the Seven Sisters, finds herself in a precarious situation when the Centaur Hward captures her. As she grapples with her feelings towards her captor and her father's war plans, they both seek refuge in a cave, beginning a journey that blends danger with unexpected romance.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The story transitions into a witty reflection on the influence of BookTok, where book recommendations focus heavily on romance, particularly spicy novels. The narrator humorously critiques the sensational nature of these recommendations and expresses existential dread from their own reading experiences.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
Adult romance novels, especially those labeled as 'spicy', see a spike in popularity, leading to discussions about the types of content that readers consume. The narrator introduces a controversial list of novels that push boundaries, highlighting the obsession with explicit content in BookTok's recommendations.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
A dive into mafia-themed romance reveals some humorous yet shocking implications surrounding the characters and their behaviors. The narrator also introduces Lelo, a sponsor offering pleasure products, further intertwining themes of romance and adult topics with a comedic approach.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The narrator pokes fun at the absurd ways spicy novels are rated and discusses the overwhelming amount of sexual content in today's literary landscape, as well as the newer 'Widow meter' scale, proposing an exploration of genres that are both steamy and narrative-driven.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Reflecting on BookTok's impact on literature consumption, the narrator discusses a potential backlash against spicy genres while contextualizing this within the broader history of erotic literature. The persistent double standards in critique based on gender are also examined, emphasizing how women’s interests are often dismissed.
- 00:30:00 - 00:38:23
The conversation with Dr. esmo Louise James delves into the historical context of erotic literature, exploring its evolution alongside cultural attitudes towards women's reading preferences. The discussion posits that the moral panic over spicy books reflects broader societal anxieties and urges readers to be cautious of jeopardizing freedom of expression over discomfort with certain content.

- 00:07:14that we like to call the Widow meter as
- 00:07:16we know we definitely want to be reading
- 00:07:17all those books that make us flood our
- 00:07:19damn basement book talk don't give me no
- 00:07:21more of this fate to Black 123 scale I
- 00:07:23want the Bob I want the break your

- 00:07:31want I want it all thank you that was
- 00:07:35very descriptive really uh painted a
- 00:07:37picture into my retinas but I prefer
- 00:07:39this little visual aid the spice which
- 00:07:42is a format that I came up with and no
- 00:07:45YouTuber has ever used before at the
- 00:07:47very tippy top of the spice where the
- 00:07:50sun shines there are no references to
- 00:07:52places where it doesn't this is the type
- 00:07:54of book you could tuck under your arm
- 00:07:56skip merrily to Sunday school with and
- 00:07:59give Jesus a high five a little lower we
- 00:08:01have books that feature a limited amount
- 00:08:04of sexual content but that isn't the
- 00:08:06main focus of the narrative another
- 00:08:08layer down we have our adult romances
- 00:08:11her palms are sweaty knees weak things
- 00:08:13are getting hot and heavy type below
- 00:08:16that we have what are called Dark
- 00:08:18romances which is where things get
- 00:08:20sticky both physically and ethically
- 00:08:23there's on her sweater already arranged
- 00:08:26marriage Italian mob wife spaghetti now
- 00:08:28personally I tend to Bob near the
- 00:08:31surface with my floaties on but today I
- 00:08:34venture out into the deep end purely out
- 00:08:36of academic interest of course to ask
- 00:08:39the
- 00:08:40question is book talk ruining reading
- 00:08:43I'm going just come out and say it we
- 00:08:44need to stop book talk we need to
- 00:08:46completely eradicate I'm out here
- 00:08:47looking for recommendations and some
- 00:08:49good to read turns out the only thing
- 00:08:50they're reading is 450 Pages we got to
- 00:08:53talk about book talk women are all
- 00:08:54collectively gooning on a level that
- 00:08:56nobody has ever seen I told yall before
- 00:08:57I was searching for the sun is also a
- 00:08:59star on Google and like one of the top
- 00:09:00questions is is it spicy does anybody on
- 00:09:02this God forsaken app read a single book
- 00:09:04that isn't just straight up if you've
- 00:09:07been following the online discourse
- 00:09:09surrounding book talk you might already
- 00:09:11know that it's been in the digital
- 00:09:13dogghouse recently PR is at an alltime
- 00:09:18low many readers have expressed
- 00:09:20frustration that romance authors like
- 00:09:22Colleen Hoover have not only begun to
- 00:09:24dominate their algorithm but also the
- 00:09:26display tables at their local Barnes and
- 00:09:29Noble this was the book talk station at
- 00:09:31my local Barnes & Noble I've never read
- 00:09:32a single one of these books but why do I
- 00:09:34have a terrifying feeling that every
- 00:09:35single one includes an extremely
- 00:09:37detailed description of certain
- 00:09:40activities in response to the book talk
- 00:09:42girlies establishing a spice trade route
- 00:09:44to rival the Silk Road of centuries past
- 00:09:47there's been a kind of moral Panic
- 00:09:50across the internet hundreds of users
- 00:09:52are digging the heftiest pearls out of
- 00:09:55their grandmother's booa white knuckling
- 00:09:57them and declaring that pervers women
- 00:09:59are diluting and polluting their
- 00:10:02favorite hobby imagine if a man says
- 00:10:04that he likes movies and that he's kind
- 00:10:05of a cynophile and then you find out
- 00:10:06that all he watches his that's exactly

- 00:11:49spicy books Mother Teresa better be able
- 00:11:52to audit your browser history what's
- 00:11:54that steam Library looking like brother
- 00:11:56I better not see any titilating jiggle

- 00:12:02Marvel Rivals you know which one it just
- 00:12:05seems a little silly to act as if
- 00:12:07reading is this exclusively sacred
- 00:12:10cerebral Pastime that can be
- 00:12:13sullied by some the written word is
- 00:12:15simply a medium the same way that movies
- 00:12:18and TV shows and video games are I don't
- 00:12:20expect a masterpiece when I crack open
- 00:12:22Nanny to the Mafia the same way I don't
- 00:12:25expect Tammy and Amy to be discussing
- 00:12:27the political and economic state of the
- 00:12:29world right now try being my size Amy
- 00:12:32you don't know how it is can I say that
- 00:12:35I'm just happy that people are reading
- 00:12:39at all the national endowments for the
- 00:12:40Arts published a report titled Arts
- 00:12:42participation patterns in 2022 which
- 00:12:45found that less than 50% of the American
- 00:12:48adults surveyed had read a single book
- 00:12:50either physically or electronically in
- 00:12:52the past 12 months immeasurable decline
- 00:12:55since 2012 why are the pages so filled
- 00:12:59with so many words maybe the only way
- 00:13:01Stacy can stay motivated to read is by
- 00:13:04picking up books like I've been
- 00:13:05kidnapped by the fairy King but it's
- 00:13:07okay because he has abs at least Stacy
- 00:13:10is off that damn phone and maybe after
- 00:13:14toweling down the puddle underneath her
- 00:13:16she starts branching out and reading
- 00:13:18more and I know we live in this really
- 00:13:20like oh Pro sex Society but y'all have
- 00:13:23made me Puritan I don't want to be
- 00:13:24reading a book and then realize that I'm
- 00:13:26just reading the author's sick fantasies
- 00:13:29yes because famously men have never done
- 00:13:33that
- 00:13:35ever not even once and don't say the
- 00:13:37economy or Iraq or income inequality I
- 00:13:40cannot tell you the amount of times that
- 00:13:42I have been reading a book by a male
- 00:13:44author and have suddenly been reminded
- 00:13:46that writing is an activity that only
- 00:13:49requires one hand the difference is when
- 00:13:51male authors decide to insert sexual
- 00:13:54content into their work there seems to
- 00:13:57be this implicit man that we as readers
- 00:14:00must still engage with their writing as
- 00:14:03serious art the writer barely disguised
- 00:14:07fish is at most an uncomfortable fo to
- 00:14:10politely
- 00:14:12Overlook as long as the writer is a man
- 00:14:15a common response from book talk is that
- 00:14:16this recent hate train is misogynistic
- 00:14:19the logic being that most of book talk
- 00:14:21and in fact readers in general are women
- 00:14:24I don't agree that critiquing book talk
- 00:14:26is inherently sexist but I do think
- 00:14:29there is an obvious gender bias in the
- 00:14:31way that we're evaluating these spicy
- 00:14:33books Romany titles such as a court of
- 00:14:36thorns and Roses have been lumped into
- 00:14:38this conversation as examples of Filth
- 00:14:41invading the fantasy section so imagine
- 00:14:44my surprise when I found out that aside
- 00:14:46from a couple of eye roll worthy
- 00:14:47descriptions of jawlines and some omega
- 00:14:50verses sniffing scenes don't ask there
- 00:14:53were only about four chapters that
- 00:14:55contained anything explicit at all where
- 00:14:58was the unleash Hedonism corrupting
- 00:15:00Chast female Minds where was the
- 00:15:03debauchery I was promised hello I'd like
- 00:15:06my debauchery please if women are only
- 00:15:08reading these to goon they are being
- 00:15:10incredibly inefficient about it okay
- 00:15:12that's like four goons per 46 chapters
- 00:15:16which we can calculate to be a gooning
- 00:15:18rate of about 8.69 nice 6% why am I
- 00:15:21doing math isn't it funny how a fantasy
- 00:15:24book is no longer a real fantasy book if
- 00:15:26it's written by a woman and has a
- 00:15:28romance subplot in it this isn't
- 00:15:30happening for 100% of the book when
- 00:15:32people are reading a spicy fantasy book
- 00:15:34we are reading a book that has probably
- 00:15:36about 80 to 90% plot character
- 00:15:39development story emotion whatever and
- 00:15:42like maybe 10 or 15% of spicy material
- 00:15:45which is the same that you would get
- 00:15:47from a show on Netflix books on the
- 00:15:49upper end of the spice are being treated
- 00:15:52as if they are far beyond a clench
- 00:15:53before you drench and in the Marana
- 00:15:55trench despite having a comparable
- 00:15:58amount of explicit material to male
- 00:16:00authors of the same genre we can have
- 00:16:02interesting discussions about the
- 00:16:03quality of this book which me but why
- 00:16:07this pressure to dismiss it as frivolity
- 00:16:09unworthy to be sheld next to the Witcher
- 00:16:13series or Game of Thrones am I to
- 00:16:15believe that men only ever have pure
- 00:16:18plot motivated reasons for indulging in
- 00:16:21countless dirty descriptions of the
- 00:16:23damsels that Mr Martin was never
- 00:16:25straight up jorking it why do you think
- 00:16:28Winds of Winter is is taking so long
- 00:16:30from what I can tell the only difference
- 00:16:32is the perspective and target audience
- 00:16:34in the same way that a movie centering
- 00:16:36around men and male experiences is just
- 00:16:38a movie and a movie centering around
- 00:16:41women and female experiences is a chickf
- 00:16:44flick I'm thinking about this cuz I'm
- 00:16:46about to finish Pride and Prejudice I'm
- 00:16:47looking for a new book to read why do
- 00:16:49these guys keep bringing up Pride and
- 00:16:50Prejudice okay now I made the mistake I
- 00:16:52made the mistake of looking up books to
- 00:16:55read on Tik Tok every single book is
- 00:16:59every single book has spice I don't want
- 00:17:01Spice it's weird I saw somebody reading
- 00:17:03it ends with us on the train at 10: in
- 00:17:05the morning it's got to be an addiction
- 00:17:07at that point I want to focus on the
- 00:17:08word Addiction now I'm pretty sure this
- 00:17:10guy is just making a joke but I have
- 00:17:12seen the term addiction used as a
- 00:17:14sincere accusation multiple times during
- 00:17:17this whole book talk debacle many users
- 00:17:20are equating any interest in spicy
- 00:17:22literature to a dependence on the
- 00:17:24hardcore adult content hosted for
- 00:17:26example on a certain black and orange
- 00:17:29site I wouldn't know it's banned in my
- 00:17:31state and also I'm too busy getting laid
- 00:17:33in real life now I'm a big proponent of
- 00:17:36moderation when it comes to this kind of
- 00:17:38thing no matter what form it's in
- 00:17:40especially if you notice it has begun to
- 00:17:42negatively impact your relationships the
- 00:17:44way you perceive other people's bodies
- 00:17:46and the way you perceive your own body
- 00:17:48but let's not pretend that a moist mom
- 00:17:50in Minnesota writing about sexy
- 00:17:52werewolves has anywhere near the scope
- 00:17:55of harm that a billion dooll industry
- 00:17:58preying on on countless men women and
- 00:18:00children for decades has regardless of
- 00:18:04our personal convictions adult content
- 00:18:06is going to exist it's the forbidden
- 00:18:08fruit the masses have the munchies for
- 00:18:11that cat is out of the bag and on
- 00:18:13screens around the world I'm in the
- 00:18:15business of harm reduction and I can't
- 00:18:17think of a more harmless way to consume
- 00:18:19this type of content than text on a page
- 00:18:22it's a form contained in the theater of
- 00:18:24the Mind where no actors are underpaid
- 00:18:27underage or abused in a world of
- 00:18:30restaurants strip clubs in a dangerously
- 00:18:33unregulated adult film industry in a
- 00:18:35world where companies are literally
- 00:18:37putting robot slave girlfriends on the
- 00:18:39market give us a picture of someone and
- 00:18:41we can make that robot customized to you
- 00:18:44it can learn about your product or it
- 00:18:46can be your girlfriend in a world where
- 00:18:48the emergence of AI threatens every
- 00:18:51single person with the possibility of
- 00:18:53being deep faked into any video against
- 00:18:55their will it's gross it's gross and I'm
- 00:18:58sorry I really am th this just seems
- 00:19:01like a weird place to start but enough
- 00:19:03theorizing it was time for me to venture
- 00:19:06out into the real world to do some field
- 00:19:08research about this threat facing our
- 00:19:11bookstores my first stop was Barnes &
- 00:19:13Noble where I immediately noticed the
- 00:19:16strong presence of the Romany category
- 00:19:18especially the imperian series which has
- 00:19:21quickly attracted a devoted fan
- 00:19:24base I I'm looking for a book yep why
- 00:19:28I'm sorry I was on I was literally the
- 00:19:30Rebecca Y yes why I was literally on the
- 00:19:34Target app at 3:00 a.m. no I'm going to
- 00:19:35cry it's not here no we have none none
- 00:19:38none you can tell that was the seventh
- 00:19:40middle-aged white woman that Target
- 00:19:42employee had to talk down from the ledge
- 00:19:44that morning as I had been warned the
- 00:19:46book talk table was almost exclusively
- 00:19:49stacked with Saucy novels however I
- 00:19:52couldn't help but notice the table at
- 00:19:55the very front of the store carried
- 00:19:57several titles that had recently been
- 00:19:59all over my for you page Wednesday's
- 00:20:01Child by Ian Lee my husband by mod
- 00:20:04Ventura and blackouts by Justin Taurus
- 00:20:07Tik tok's influence had also helped to
- 00:20:09push these novels all the way to the
- 00:20:12door even if they weren't labeled that
- 00:20:14way you see this is the book talk I know
- 00:20:17the one that has consistently served me
- 00:20:19literature across a broad range of
- 00:20:21genres while the community has become
- 00:20:23synonymous with sinful reading in the
- 00:20:25public eye I had to actively seek out
- 00:20:28its spicy side but if you've made no
- 00:20:31effort to curate your feed I'm sure
- 00:20:33every book talk tagged video you scroll
- 00:20:35across feels like a visit from the Goon
- 00:20:38Squad social media as a marketing tool
- 00:20:41is here to stay these books about
- 00:20:43hotcakes are selling like hot cakes for
- 00:20:46a reason if you don't like that the most
- 00:20:49effective way you can change that is to
- 00:20:51interact with the countless book talk
- 00:20:53creators talking about books you do like
- 00:20:55or contributing content of your own
- 00:20:58instead of on the internet make the
- 00:21:00internet your pop your for Kafka and may
- 00:21:04the algorithm be ever in your favor I do
- 00:21:06have to admit that Barnes & Noble had
- 00:21:08more spice than I was expecting with an
- 00:21:10entire shelf dedicated to Just Hockey
- 00:21:13romances alone seriously I I do not
- 00:21:16understand this obsession with hockey
- 00:21:18players oh look women are reading Pride
- 00:21:19and Prejudice one hockey romance in
- 00:21:22particular has been receiving a lot of
- 00:21:24attention lately Icebreaker has a much
- 00:21:27higher goon to chap ratio sitting at a
- 00:21:29whopping 22% but its pastel Illustrated
- 00:21:32cover has been accused of being
- 00:21:34misleading and even dangerous for
- 00:21:36children this is the cover of Icebreaker
- 00:21:38if you show this to most parents like if
- 00:21:40a kid walked up to you and was like hey
- 00:21:41Mom can I get this it kind of looks like
- 00:21:43a normal little romance right why does
- 00:21:45this book look like it's written for
- 00:21:46children it's a cartoon this is a
- 00:21:48cartoon Icebreaker a novel this looks
- 00:21:51like it's for kids oh gosh it's almost
- 00:21:54like there's an entire saying about
- 00:21:57judging book covers on it'll it'll come
- 00:21:59to me in a second I don't think any
- 00:22:01normal person likes the idea of a middle
- 00:22:03schooler coming into contact with spicy
- 00:22:06books but I feel like this line of
- 00:22:08argument breaks down pretty quickly
- 00:22:10because I could mention another genre
- 00:22:13with deceptively innocent looking
- 00:22:15cartoon covers but y'all aren't going to
- 00:22:18like it oh thank God my 12-year-old
- 00:22:20didn't pick up Icebreaker and is instead
- 00:22:22perusing this wholesome text do you like
- 00:22:25big girls thick with two C's Edition
- 00:22:30haven't the last couple of generations
- 00:22:32fought so hard to break the stigma here
- 00:22:35in the west That animated media is only
- 00:22:38for children are adult cartoons like
- 00:22:40Rick and Morty Family Guy in South Park
- 00:22:43also on the chopping block what does an
- 00:22:44adult book cover even look like does it
- 00:22:47have to have photo realistic people on
- 00:22:49the front doing number 17 the spread
- 00:22:52eagle I promise I'm not trying to be
- 00:22:54purposefully obtuse I get what these
- 00:22:56people are saying but at the same time
- 00:22:58do you see how difficult it is to start
- 00:23:01drawing these hard ethical boundaries
- 00:23:03parents still need to be parents in
- 00:23:0620125 it takes one Google search to
- 00:23:09protect your kid from reading something
- 00:23:11they shouldn't my Barnes & Noble has a
- 00:23:13very clearly designated ya section and
- 00:23:15so did the target nearby though it
- 00:23:17contained even more dangerous material
- 00:23:20for the spongy adolescent mind than
- 00:23:22hockey players who Puck around I don't
- 00:23:24know why I expected anything from
- 00:23:26Walmart they had Diary of a Wimpy Kid
- 00:23:28right next to Stephen King Percy Jackson
- 00:23:30was just a few inches away from a super
- 00:23:32dirty book did you know a guy gets drunk
- 00:23:34and impregnates his own daughters in
- 00:23:36this one give a warning put these in a
- 00:23:38separate section of Barnes & Noble could
- 00:23:40stores be more responsible with their
- 00:23:42organization and creators more
- 00:23:44transparent with their promotions
- 00:23:47absolutely but this isn't a book talk
- 00:23:49exclusive problem and when we start
- 00:23:51talking about regulations Logistics get
- 00:23:55messy who determines what books are
- 00:23:56inappropriate and where they're allowed
- 00:23:58to be and what criteria do they use to
- 00:24:02be clear you don't have to like
- 00:24:04Icebreaker I didn't it's an unbearable
- 00:24:07approximation of what a woman in her 30s
- 00:24:10thinks young hot people do in college
- 00:24:12the sight of emojis printed upon bound
- 00:24:15paper legitimately knocked the air out
- 00:24:18of my lungs the book wanted to be an
- 00:24:21enemies to lovers story but was so eager
- 00:24:23to jump to the juicy bits it forgot
- 00:24:26about the enemy part there have always
- 00:24:29been books that are not appropriate for
- 00:24:31children this is not a new thing I lived
- 00:24:34at the library growing up I knew the
- 00:24:36exact geolocation of the shelf of bodice
- 00:24:39rippers I had to pass on my way to
- 00:24:42reread the same three dinosaur books
- 00:24:44every Tuesday why are we suddenly
- 00:24:46getting our Collective panties in a
- 00:24:48Twist over a genre your great aunt has
- 00:24:51been flicking through since the 70s
- 00:24:54reading another one of your dirty girl
- 00:24:56books did you think those jacked oiled
- 00:24:59up gentlemen with billowing open shirts
- 00:25:01on the covers were there to politely
- 00:25:04help heroins file their taxes we seem to
- 00:25:07have a very sanitized view of our four
- 00:25:09readers that doesn't seem to match up
- 00:25:12with reality much like the characters in
- 00:25:14these books it's time for us to do some
- 00:25:17busting myth busting that is and as
- 00:25:19everyone knows it's always more fun to
- 00:25:22bust with a
- 00:25:25friend myths that is you may know her
- 00:25:27from her the history series on Tik Tok
- 00:25:30or her book by the same name she's here
- 00:25:33she's queer and she's not afraid to talk
- 00:25:35about rear please welcome a very special
- 00:25:38guest Dr esmo Louise James thank you
- 00:25:42what an intro I am obsessed hi hello so
- 00:25:46lovely to be here can you tell the folks
- 00:25:48at home a little bit more about who you
- 00:25:51are and what you do I'm a sex historian
- 00:25:55um I specialized in the history of
- 00:25:59porographic novels and more broadly I
- 00:26:01look at the history of sex identity and
- 00:26:04gender from the ancient world until now
- 00:26:06let's get down and dirty can you tell us
- 00:26:09how long spicy books have been around
- 00:26:12spicy books have been around for
- 00:26:15hundreds of years so erotic writing
- 00:26:17stayed all the way back to the ancient
- 00:26:18world we have always had a fascination
- 00:26:21with uh putting writing pieces together
- 00:26:24that are meant to be titillating but the
- 00:26:26birth of the novel happens in the 18th
- 00:26:30century so it's like the 1700s so in it
- 00:26:33would be like a bare ankle would get
- 00:26:35like five pepper emojis on Tik Tok right
- 00:26:38is that how that would work it's do you
- 00:26:40know what it's really interesting
- 00:26:41because I think this is one of the most
- 00:26:43dominant conceptions but in reality some
- 00:26:46of theography that was written in the
- 00:26:4918th century is not allowed to be
- 00:26:51published today because it is so
- 00:26:54explicit yes there are some pieces you
- 00:26:57know I'm thinking of is like uh the
- 00:26:59Marquee thead that his Works will not go
- 00:27:01to print today because they are so
- 00:27:04explicit and controversial like all of
- 00:27:06the spicy stuff we have today just
- 00:27:07everyone uh stank a little bit a little
- 00:27:10bit more a little bit more want to talk
- 00:27:13a little bit about um uh something that
- 00:27:16you've said recently you were on a
- 00:27:17podcast called uh the briefing and
- 00:27:20something you said really stuck out to
- 00:27:22me you said uh you said fantasies are
- 00:27:25not a reflection of how we act in real
- 00:27:28life or what we want in real life um I
- 00:27:31think that this becomes very relevant
- 00:27:33when we talk about uh the controversy
- 00:27:36surrounding book talk especially what we
- 00:27:38now refer to as the dark romance subg
- 00:27:41genre the idea behind it is that if you
- 00:27:44engageing novels that talks about you
- 00:27:47know kind of problematic romances the
- 00:27:49worry is there that if we read those and
- 00:27:51consume them then we're going to want to
- 00:27:53act them out in our real life but what
- 00:27:54we know from many St studies into how
- 00:27:57fantasy
- 00:27:58imaginative play in real life works is
- 00:28:01that there's not a correlation between
- 00:28:04those two so when we're talking about
- 00:28:06engaging in you know spicy books in
- 00:28:09particular what we need to talk about is
- 00:28:11ethical ways to engage in them ways that
- 00:28:14we're knowing that this book is a
- 00:28:17fantasy um and not reality in how we do
- 00:28:20that what can actually happen is that if
- 00:28:22we pour ourselves into these novels
- 00:28:24knowing that they might be problematic
- 00:28:26uh representations in real life it's
- 00:28:28quite um almost like a therapeutic
- 00:28:30experience they've seen if you know an
- 00:28:33adult is reading you know dark romance
- 00:28:36say they're reading something about um a
- 00:28:39romance surrounding a stalker right or
- 00:28:41or some other kind of problematic
- 00:28:43Dynamic that doesn't necessarily mean
- 00:28:46that they would be super psyched if a
- 00:28:49stalker showed up on their doorstep in
- 00:28:51real life no and I mean as a logical
- 00:28:54example of this right it will be like
- 00:28:56the the hero the fairy King Pur and he
- 00:28:59said like I'm going to have you now if
- 00:29:02that happened in real life I would have
- 00:29:04ick instantly ick I I slightly changed
- 00:29:08the Hue of the light so you know I'm
- 00:29:11getting serious now it doesn't look as
- 00:29:13cool as I thought it would at this point
- 00:29:16I've been playing the courta appointed
- 00:29:18defense attorney for the girls that goon
- 00:29:21most of the video but dark romance is
- 00:29:23where my job gets a little harder p a 10
- 00:29:28but you call him Uncle Jake he's a 10
- 00:29:31but he Brands you after hunting you down
- 00:29:33in a bridal hunt finds her and then
- 00:29:36takes her on a boat puts her face in
- 00:29:38shark infested waters and then does the
- 00:29:41deed with her there is no reason there
- 00:29:43is no reason that I should be getting
- 00:29:46this unhinged over a man who is stalking
- 00:29:51this poor innocent unassuming girl I'm a
- 00:29:56retired AO3 veteran
- 00:29:58honorably discharged after years of less
- 00:30:01honorable discharge so I tried to take a
- 00:30:04crack at the infamous Haunting of
- 00:30:06Adeline he put a what in her
- 00:30:13what I don't know what I expected safe
- 00:30:16to say not for me dark romance often
- 00:30:18explores scenarios involving dubious
- 00:30:20consent large age gaps and even physical
- 00:30:23abuse there was a portion of book talk
- 00:30:26that enthusiastically reads and
- 00:30:28recommends these books based off of the
- 00:30:31taboos they violate I love taboo
- 00:30:33romances it's my all-time favorite TR
- 00:30:35some more taboo book recommendations
- 00:30:37this sub genre has received especially
- 00:30:40intense scrutiny over this past year as
- 00:30:43certain popular dark romance titles have
- 00:30:46been noticed by people outside of their
- 00:30:48usual reader base at least once a week
- 00:30:51some book from book talk goes crazy
- 00:30:53viral and blows up causing the average
- 00:30:55person to be exposed to it and read it
- 00:30:57and start calling out all the crazy
- 00:30:58stuff happening in it if a book talker
- 00:31:00describes a book as a dark romance
- 00:31:03immediate red flag maybe we just got to
- 00:31:05eradicate this whole thing break it up
- 00:31:06start from scratch I have to point out
- 00:31:09that men have an extensive history of
- 00:31:13prominently and often very poorly
- 00:31:15depicting sexual violence against women
- 00:31:18with the audience's perspective often
- 00:31:20being that of the Voyer or even the
- 00:31:23perpetrator it just seems strange to me
- 00:31:26that when women take owner ownership of
- 00:31:28these stories willingly project onto the
- 00:31:31victim in these situations for their own
- 00:31:34gratification that we suddenly have a
- 00:31:36video essay worthy crisis on our hands
- 00:31:39it is absolutely understandable to find
- 00:31:42dark romance upsetting that is a very
- 00:31:44normal reaction but I'm sure it's also
- 00:31:46upsetting for people whose loved ones
- 00:31:48have been murdered to see the popularity
- 00:31:51of slasher films I'm sure it's also
- 00:31:53upsetting for veterans with PTSD to
- 00:31:56watch the same mediocre military
- 00:31:58simulators pumped out year over year we
- 00:32:01seem to have largely come to the
- 00:32:02consensus that playing Cod or watching a
- 00:32:05horror movie doesn't make you a serial
- 00:32:08killer we insist that male directors
- 00:32:10stripping down 20-some year old
- 00:32:13actresses to simulate acts of brutality
- 00:32:15on them for TV are just in the business
- 00:32:18of realistic storytelling but when it
- 00:32:20comes to dark romance we suddenly are
- 00:32:23unable to trust adult women to
- 00:32:25distinguish between reality and fiction
- 00:32:28this is despite the fact that much of
- 00:32:30the content on book talk clearly
- 00:32:32indicates a level of self-awareness and
- 00:32:35humor about how poorly dark romance
- 00:32:37translates to real life I love me some
- 00:32:39taboo romance in fiction of course real
- 00:32:41life no thank you stalking in real life
- 00:32:43illegal go to ja it's that one your
- 00:32:44honor it's talking in
- 00:32:46fiction is there something wrong with me
- 00:32:48no so he literally stalks her like
- 00:32:49everywhere she goes does she call the
- 00:32:51police no no cuz he counts her freckles
- 00:32:54and makes her waffles in the morning if
- 00:32:55you're someone who struggles to
- 00:32:57understand why any woman would be
- 00:32:58attracted to this type of book that's
- 00:33:00okay I would just highly recommend that
- 00:33:03you check out Contra points video on
- 00:33:05Twilight not only is she capital M
- 00:33:07mother and able to keep me entertained
- 00:33:09for 3 hours straight despite my Kentucky
- 00:33:11Fried detention span but the video is a
- 00:33:13masterful breakdown of the historical
- 00:33:16context of Darker plot lines and romance
- 00:33:18and how they often operate as a reaction
- 00:33:20to Purity culture rather than literal
- 00:33:23wish fulfillment the ravishment of a
- 00:33:25hesitant self-insert character by an
- 00:33:28aggressive male love interest basically
- 00:33:30provides women with an emotional
- 00:33:32loophole where they can safely explore
- 00:33:34their fantasies without guilt
- 00:33:36maintaining control because they can
- 00:33:39always just shut the book but of course
- 00:33:42there are always going to be people who
- 00:33:44push the envelope a little too far
- 00:33:47definitely check content warnings before
- 00:33:48going into them but you know what the
- 00:33:50more trigger warnings the better I want
- 00:33:52all the trigger warnings I want all
- 00:33:55the everything no one likes the guy who
- 00:33:58brags about watching a Serbian film no
- 00:34:01one likes the True Crime girly who sells
- 00:34:04dmer is my daddyy shirts on Etsy in the
- 00:34:07same way I think there are a lot of book
- 00:34:09talk creators who could approach this
- 00:34:12category with a lot more Sensitivity I
- 00:34:15mean do we really need to get tattoos of
- 00:34:17the my step uncle and step cousin snap
- 00:34:21crackled and popped my back like a glow
- 00:34:23stick in the woods book come on y'all
- 00:34:25let's dial it back some every few years
- 00:34:27the general public stops in its tracks
- 00:34:30to examine something that women like and
- 00:34:33then have extended debates on whether or
- 00:34:35not they should be allowed to this
- 00:34:37happened with 50 Shades of Gray before
- 00:34:40that it was Twilight all the way back to
- 00:34:43of all books Pride and Prejudice erotic
- 00:34:46literature when it started was um quite
- 00:34:49Elite well-educated men who often wrote
- 00:34:52uh pretending to be a woman which I find
- 00:34:54fascinating in itself that's you know
- 00:34:56really how the novel starts and what
- 00:34:59always happens is that when women get
- 00:35:00involved in the conversation we see it
- 00:35:02as something that's like really dirty
- 00:35:04and stupid and frivolous weirdly enough
- 00:35:06Jane Austin is almost like the connector
- 00:35:09between these two things uh because when
- 00:35:11Jane Austin comes on the scene and
- 00:35:12writes romances like Pride and Prejudice
- 00:35:15critics believed at the time that at
- 00:35:17best her work was light and frivolous
- 00:35:19and at worst it was a danger to the
- 00:35:22imagination and intellect of women and
- 00:35:25would drive their erotic fantasies crazy
- 00:35:28um and therefore we would have like all
- 00:35:30these women who couldn't control their
- 00:35:31libido cuz they were reading about Mr
- 00:35:33Darcy which they were kind of right they
- 00:35:34were kind of right that hand Flex I've
- 00:35:36seen the edits on Tik Tok the hand hand
- 00:35:39Flex if I can be the friend who's too
- 00:35:42woke for just one second I don't think
- 00:35:45it's a coincidence that we're seeing yet
- 00:35:47another cycle of this intense scrutiny
- 00:35:50towards what women read during a rise of
- 00:35:52conservatism in politics and media
- 00:35:56that's not to say that any and all
- 00:35:57scrutiny towards book talk is motivated
- 00:36:00by conservatism don't get me wrong it's
- 00:36:02entertaining to on book talk
- 00:36:04recommendations a lot of them are badly
- 00:36:07written or rely on shallow tropes and
- 00:36:11probably belong on Wattpad instead of in
- 00:36:13a bookstore but some of y'all are going
- 00:36:15fullon Fahrenheit 451 over some freaky
- 00:36:19fairies and NGL it's kind of scaring me
- 00:36:23a little bit if you're going to read
- 00:36:25something read the room now is not the
- 00:36:28time for all that leave me
- 00:36:30[Music]
- 00:36:32alone
- 00:36:34Aira I think a lot of critics of book
- 00:36:36talk have very Noble intentions but
- 00:36:39right now there are people in power who
- 00:36:41are all too happy to use excuses like we
- 00:36:45need to protect the children and women
- 00:36:47are reading dangerous books to restrict
- 00:36:50access to anything that violates their
- 00:36:53ideological convictions this isn't me
- 00:36:55fear-mongering this isn't me being
- 00:36:58alarmist this has happened before and it
- 00:37:01can happen again when a significant
- 00:37:03portion of the US and its governing body
- 00:37:06view queer identities as automatically
- 00:37:08obscene censorship becomes a slippery
- 00:37:11slope this isn't to discourage anyone
- 00:37:13from thinking critically about what they
- 00:37:15read just be careful that your personal
- 00:37:18discomfort doesn't leave you vulnerable
- 00:37:20to a narrative that justifies bands that
- 00:37:23extend far beyond what those nasty Tick
- 00:37:26Tock girlies get into to like maybe we
- 00:37:28could all just keep our voices down at
- 00:37:30least for like the next four years they
- 00:37:33might hear us yeah well I can hear you
- 00:37:36oh it's 3:00 in the morning this video
- 00:37:39is supposed to go up in like 2 days yeah
- 00:37:41is that why we got stress acne hey now
- 00:37:44watch it we got these Girl Scout cookies
- 00:37:46yesterday you couldn't make it last one
- 00:37:49night oh God forbid I support the you
- 00:37:52yeah Samoa's more like you wish there
- 00:37:54was Samoa in here get out go to that
