Chronologie
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

- 00:00:08hey it's Mr Johns welcome to the second
- 00:00:09presentation for unit one this one we're
- 00:00:12going to cover Idaho traffic laws every
- 00:00:15state has their own laws there are some
- 00:00:17that of course are nationwide but some
- 00:00:20are specific to our state so let's cover
- 00:00:23some of these things today the
- 00:00:25purpose of laws is to make our road
- 00:00:28safer by providing expect expect ations
- 00:00:30and requirements for how drivers and
- 00:00:33other roadway users will act while on
- 00:00:36the
- 00:00:37road just like a lot of laws without
- 00:00:40them it would be chaos and so yeah sure
- 00:00:42it would be great to be able to drive as
- 00:00:44fast as you want and do whatever you
- 00:00:46want on the road it just would not be a
- 00:00:48safe environment for any of us so that's
- 00:00:51the purpose you can find all Idaho
- 00:00:53traffic laws online just for searching
- 00:00:56uh just by searching for aaho tidle 49
- 00:00:59motor vehicle
- 00:01:01vehicles that will take you directly to
- 00:01:03it if you just search for AO traffic
- 00:01:04laws it would probably get you there
- 00:01:05eventually as well um but this is a
- 00:01:07screenshot of what that website looks
- 00:01:10like it's a government website and you
- 00:01:12can click on and download any specific
- 00:01:15category or topic so while this course
- 00:01:18will not go into every detail and even
- 00:01:21the aaho driver's manual or handbook
- 00:01:23doesn't go into every law um they are
- 00:01:27all available right here uh
- 00:01:30on this website the handbook looks like
- 00:01:33this it's updated every year or two and
- 00:01:35the laws and facts that you need to know
- 00:01:37to pass the state test we call it the
- 00:01:40DMV's written exam are all in the latest
- 00:01:43version of this handbook so while this
- 00:01:46class will cover more than what's in
- 00:01:48this handbook we do cover everything
- 00:01:51that's also in the handbook so we give
- 00:01:53you more than that for sure about what
- 00:01:56you need to study to pass the state test
- 00:01:59down the the line here six months after
- 00:02:03finishing driver's training you should
- 00:02:07reread that manual several times to pass
- 00:02:09the test take my word for that um what
- 00:02:15you need to know this short presentation
- 00:02:17will cover the most important traffic
- 00:02:18laws you need to know before you start
- 00:02:21your six hours of driving lessons and
- 00:02:23what you can likely expect to be on the
- 00:02:26state test the written test so let's
- 00:02:28talk about stopping laws
- 00:02:31you must stop before a stop line or
- 00:02:35crosswalk let me explain the difference
- 00:02:37stop lines are bigger wider White Lines
- 00:02:41there's one of them and it's called a
- 00:02:43stop line if there is one you have to
- 00:02:46stop before you touch it with your car
- 00:02:50if there's a crosswalk you need to stop
- 00:02:53before you get into the
- 00:02:56crosswalk uh and there will be two
- 00:02:58that's a crosswalk right so there's two
- 00:03:00thinner white lines where people walk um
- 00:03:04and if there are no lines at all just
- 00:03:06stop before you enter the intersection
- 00:03:08so kind of an imaginary line between the
- 00:03:11sidewalks um left and right um You just
- 00:03:15make sure you don't poke your bumper out
- 00:03:17your front the front of your car out
- 00:03:19into traffic that should make sense um
- 00:03:21but you do have to stop in most
- 00:03:25situations um but be aware stop line
- 00:03:28first
- 00:03:30um crosswalk second um or if there's a
- 00:03:35red light like this one on the screen
- 00:03:37here obviously you would need to stop um
- 00:03:40there as well now here's a little bit of
- 00:03:43uh trivia the stop
- 00:03:47sign does not mean you have to stop at
- 00:03:50the sign that is not what the sign means
- 00:03:53it's an
- 00:03:55indication that you'll be stopping at
- 00:03:57that intersection that's all so
- 00:04:00um when you see a stop sign just know
- 00:04:03that you have to stop at that
- 00:04:05intersection so the next thing you look
- 00:04:06for is a stop line if there isn't one is
- 00:04:09there a crosswalk if there isn't one
- 00:04:12stop before you get into the
- 00:04:15intersection I also think it's important
- 00:04:18not to cross um like where the sidewalks
- 00:04:21if I'm looking left right
- 00:04:23left don't interfere with the sidewalk
- 00:04:26there could be someone especially these
- 00:04:28days with motorized scooters and
- 00:04:30bicycles um they could just come flying
- 00:04:32down there and uh here you are stopped
- 00:04:35in the middle of that sidewalk uh area
- 00:04:38there's no sidewalk there but you know
- 00:04:40what I
- 00:04:40mean in the middle of Where the Sidewalk
- 00:04:43would be as it crosses that street so
- 00:04:47that those would be kind of the steps
- 00:04:49that I would take When approaching is
- 00:04:52there a stop sign yes okay look for a
- 00:04:54stop line next look for a crosswalk next
- 00:04:57look for a sidewalk and and don't stop
- 00:05:01where you would block it right and
- 00:05:04finally just make sure you don't stop in
- 00:05:07the street so that's kind of the
- 00:05:09progression of how that works so you do
- 00:05:10have to stop for any red light or sign
- 00:05:13whether it's flashing or solid for
- 00:05:16pedestrian crosswalk in a marked or
- 00:05:18unmarked crosswalk so what does that
- 00:05:21mean marked or unmarked that's kind of
- 00:05:24interesting um it's interesting
- 00:05:26terminology that's exactly how the law
- 00:05:28is written um obviously a marked
- 00:05:30crosswalk has the two white lines so
- 00:05:33that's obvious an unmarked crosswalk
- 00:05:35it's interesting right there's nothing
- 00:05:38there it's where people cross the street
- 00:05:42between um
- 00:05:44corners of an
- 00:05:47intersection basically pedestrians have
- 00:05:49the right away um and if you keep that
- 00:05:52in mind you'll be safe um you'll be
- 00:05:54doing the right thing so pedestrians
- 00:05:57have the right away and you have to stop
- 00:05:59if you see a pedestrian Crossing you
- 00:06:02have to stop at a railroad crossing when
- 00:06:03a train is coming or when a when train
- 00:06:06signals Gates or signs indicate that
- 00:06:08there is a train
- 00:06:11approaching that obviously is super
- 00:06:13dangerous the you'll never be a train uh
- 00:06:16in a contest or in a crash so you stop
- 00:06:20you stop and so um you just stop they
- 00:06:25are bigger uh heavier and faster than
- 00:06:28they look
- 00:06:29um so you if if if any of those things
- 00:06:33are present um you stop if you see it or
- 00:06:36hear it or there's a signal a gate or a
- 00:06:39sign that says um there's a train
- 00:06:41approaching you stop you also have to
- 00:06:43stop here's interesting fact you have to
- 00:06:45stop when entering a street from an
- 00:06:47Alleyway building driveway or private
- 00:06:49road if you have a long driveway or a
- 00:06:53short driveway you have to stop before
- 00:06:57you enter the street which means you you
- 00:06:59can't just pull out of the garage and
- 00:07:01fly into the street you have to pull out
- 00:07:03stop look and then enter the street so
- 00:07:07same thing for Alleyways um when
- 00:07:10entering a street from a building so
- 00:07:12that would be like there's a parking
- 00:07:14garage or something like that and you're
- 00:07:16entering the street from that
- 00:07:18building all right you here's some other
- 00:07:20things you also have to stop at the
- 00:07:22request of a police officer if they are
- 00:07:24tell showing you stop something's going
- 00:07:26on up ahead for an emergency or police
- 00:07:28vehicle in a siren or flashing red or
- 00:07:31blue lights and you must move over to
- 00:07:33the right side as far as possible and
- 00:07:36stop until they go by so important we do
- 00:07:40that stop for a school bus that is
- 00:07:42loading or unloading students or has its
- 00:07:44stop sign or flashing lights on and you
- 00:07:47are behind it you always have to stop if
- 00:07:50you're behind it if they're doing that
- 00:07:53however and by the way this is a
- 00:07:55question that you'll see not only on my
- 00:07:56final but on the state test make sure
- 00:07:58you understand school bus laws you have
- 00:08:01to stop for a school bus that is loading
- 00:08:03or unloading students or has it stop
- 00:08:05sign out or flashing lights on that's
- 00:08:08just like the previous fact this one is
- 00:08:12on the if you're on the other side of
- 00:08:14the road and you're approaching the bus
- 00:08:17if there are less than two lanes going
- 00:08:19in each Direction you have to
- 00:08:21stop so you have to kind of picture that
- 00:08:24in your mind you have to know what that
- 00:08:26means if it's a four-lane road
- 00:08:29you have two lanes on your side and the
- 00:08:32bus is on the other side with its own
- 00:08:34two lanes you don't have to stop but if
- 00:08:37there's fewer Lanes than that if there
- 00:08:40are three lanes which includes the
- 00:08:42middle turn lane or just a two lane road
- 00:08:45you have to stop no matter what on
- 00:08:46either side make sure you understand
- 00:08:49that four-lane road you don't have to
- 00:08:51stop if you're approaching it three or
- 00:08:54less everybody stops for a school bus
- 00:08:56that's because the school bus drivers
- 00:08:58are trained to let students cross the
- 00:09:01road in either direction if it's a three
- 00:09:05lane or two-lane
- 00:09:08road so it's for safety and if involved
- 00:09:12in a wreck you have to
- 00:09:14stop speed limit laws the basic rule so
- 00:09:17we have something called the basic rule
- 00:09:19the basic rule no matter what the posted
- 00:09:21speed you must judge the situation and
- 00:09:24conditions and adjust your speed
- 00:09:27accordingly even driving to too slow in
- 00:09:30good conditions and holding up traffic
- 00:09:32is breaking the basic rule driving too
- 00:09:35fast in like snowy icy conditions is is
- 00:09:39breaking the basic rule I had a trick
- 00:09:42question on uh a test when I was
- 00:09:46teaching driver's ed in the classroom uh
- 00:09:49and yeah I I did trick questions all the
- 00:09:51time uh really want you guys to think
- 00:09:53not just memorize so the question
- 00:09:56was a driver is going 10 m an hour
- 00:10:01underneath the posted speed limit but
- 00:10:03the roads are
- 00:10:06icy can a police officer give that
- 00:10:08driver a speeding
- 00:10:11ticket the answer is yes they are going
- 00:10:14too fast for the conditions so uh be
- 00:10:19aware of that and sometimes our roads
- 00:10:22are just terrible and the speed limits
- 00:10:24are not uh appropriate at all um
- 00:10:30and the best way to know that by the way
- 00:10:32and we'll cover that when we get into
- 00:10:34talking about weather driving in
- 00:10:35different weather conditions I've told
- 00:10:38taught and told all of my students and
- 00:10:40my own kids first thing you do on an icy
- 00:10:43snowy uh morning if you have to drive to
- 00:10:46school or someplace you get out in your
- 00:10:48neighborhood and kind of Slam on the
- 00:10:49brake step on the brake hard with nobody
- 00:10:52around you you know and test see what
- 00:10:54happens if your car slides uh and you
- 00:10:56can't come to the normal stop then you
- 00:10:58know there's an issue with the road
- 00:11:01conditions and so your speed limit is
- 00:11:03going to have to be lower right your
- 00:11:05speed uh the maximum speed in Idaho is
- 00:11:0875 miles hour on freeways unless
- 00:11:11otherwise posted now that's interesting
- 00:11:14because there are a few locations where
- 00:11:16it is posted 80 but in general if you
- 00:11:19are asked this question anywhere what's
- 00:11:21the maximum speed limit in Idaho it's 75
- 00:11:25with the
- 00:11:27little
- 00:11:29asterisk there are a few places where
- 00:11:32it's posted 80 so that's why it means
- 00:11:34unless otherwise posted vehicles with
- 00:11:37five more axles which we're talking
- 00:11:39about semi- trucks here and over 26,000
- 00:11:41lbs must drive no faster than 10 m hour
- 00:11:43under the posted speed limit so like
- 00:11:45here there's a speed limit sign that
- 00:11:47said 70 all trucks big trucks have to
- 00:11:51drive 60 now do
- 00:11:54they no no by law they have to they have
- 00:11:58to
- 00:11:59right
- 00:12:01um that's a safety thing it takes them
- 00:12:03so much longer to stop and it's a danger
- 00:12:06it's a hazard if they are going the same
- 00:12:09speed that a little tiny convertible or
- 00:12:11any small car is going um it's just a
- 00:12:14different it's physics it's different uh
- 00:12:17minimum speeds there is a minimum speed
- 00:12:19Believe It or Not uh it is illegal to
- 00:12:20drive so slowly that you disrupt the
- 00:12:22flow of traffic so you have to you have
- 00:12:25to drive um
- 00:12:29either the speed limit or close to it uh
- 00:12:33without going over it um honestly if you
- 00:12:37are I mean that's the law so um is are
- 00:12:40you going to get pulled over if you're
- 00:12:41going the speed limit and there's people
- 00:12:43behind you honking and
- 00:12:45tailgating while that's stressful I do
- 00:12:48not think you would get a ticket you are
- 00:12:50going the speed limit you are
- 00:12:52driving as fast as um a person is
- 00:12:57allowed to in that situation ation um
- 00:12:59but the law also says it's illegal to
- 00:13:02drive so slowly that you disrupt the
- 00:13:04normal flow of traffic I would move over
- 00:13:06so I would still move over don't don't
- 00:13:09if you can right if there's multiple
- 00:13:11Lanes move over let people go past you
- 00:13:13just know that people will speed people
- 00:13:15will speed and I grew up in Idaho I've
- 00:13:17been here for a long time and people
- 00:13:19would drive five miles per hour over
- 00:13:22that was kind of the expect not the
- 00:13:24expectation that's the wrong word that's
- 00:13:26this this the standard that's the
- 00:13:29average the people were driving even
- 00:13:31though it's against the law um and as
- 00:13:34people have moved to our state I've
- 00:13:37noticed that it is now definitely closer
- 00:13:39to 10 and sometimes 15 miles an hour
- 00:13:42over the speed limit that is just the
- 00:13:44flow of traffic
- 00:13:46it's it's all I can say is it's illegal
- 00:13:50um and don't get caught up with in it
- 00:13:52you know P just move to the right lane
- 00:13:54um the left lane is for passing move to
- 00:13:56the right side and let those people who
- 00:13:58are are willing to take that risk go by
- 00:14:00you so um you may also not travel in the
- 00:14:04far left lane if you're impeding the
- 00:14:06flow of traffic traveling at a lawful
- 00:14:08speed there's a fine line there right uh
- 00:14:11if you're going the speed limit and
- 00:14:13you're in the left lane that should be
- 00:14:14okay but there's also another law that
- 00:14:16says you have to stay to the right as
- 00:14:19much as possible you know if possible
- 00:14:22Drive in the right lane so let you know
- 00:14:26the left lane is kind of considered the
- 00:14:27passing Lane so if you're you know if
- 00:14:30you've got traffic behind you you should
- 00:14:33move to the
- 00:14:34right racing it is illegal to engag in
- 00:14:37any vehicle race or speed exhibition
- 00:14:39that means you can't spin out burn your
- 00:14:42tires you can't race a you know somebody
- 00:14:45next to you who revs their engine and
- 00:14:47they want to see who has the faster car
- 00:14:49that's against the law uh definitely all
- 00:14:53right R of right of way laws just the
- 00:14:56RightWay means who has the
- 00:14:59the legal right to go first okay right
- 00:15:03of way right of way covers the laws that
- 00:15:05clarify who legally goes first in
- 00:15:07certain traffic situations it's very
- 00:15:10simple and we'll cover a few of the
- 00:15:13things that'll clarify this for you one
- 00:15:15of the things that I was stressed about
- 00:15:17when I Learned to Drive was four-way
- 00:15:18stops I'm so nervous about doing the
- 00:15:21wrong thing I was especially at that age
- 00:15:24that I was so worried I wouldn't know
- 00:15:26what to do and I just sit there and i'
- 00:15:28like am I supposed to to go who else
- 00:15:29goes who goes next who it's not that
- 00:15:31complicated so just take a deep breath
- 00:15:34and by the way you give the right away
- 00:15:35to others you don't take it from them a
- 00:15:37lot of drivers do not know the laws so
- 00:15:40just yield to them if necessary even if
- 00:15:42you know it's your turn but they start
- 00:15:44going why why why fight over it why deal
- 00:15:48with it just let them go
- 00:15:50but
- 00:15:51um that's just the way it is so one sign
- 00:15:54that helps drivers know who has the
- 00:15:55right away is this sign the yield sign
- 00:15:58so if you have the yield sign facing you
- 00:16:01you yield you give the other drivers the
- 00:16:05right of way so you must yield when
- 00:16:07there is a yield sign uh you must yield
- 00:16:09to faster traffic stay to the right when
- 00:16:11possible we just talked about that when
- 00:16:13entering a street from an alley driveway
- 00:16:14or garage after stopping we talked about
- 00:16:16that at a four-way stop we will talk
- 00:16:19about that in a moment at unmarked or
- 00:16:22uncontrolled intersection so unmarked
- 00:16:25just means like a four uh a four-way
- 00:16:27intersection in your neighborhood hood
- 00:16:28that doesn't have any signs and there
- 00:16:31are some neighborhoods there are a lot
- 00:16:32of neighborhoods that way most
- 00:16:34neighborhoods in some cities and towns
- 00:16:37are that way with no stop signs or yield
- 00:16:40signs and so you just yield
- 00:16:43to other people and there are laws for
- 00:16:46that like whoever gets their first goes
- 00:16:48first is kind of the the basic law there
- 00:16:51uh and that makes total sense uh when
- 00:16:53stopped for cross traffic yield to
- 00:16:55others when making a left turn you
- 00:16:57should always yield to oncoming traffic
- 00:17:00so just know you never pull in front of
- 00:17:02traffic if there's two cars one's going
- 00:17:05straight one's turning um let the
- 00:17:07straight typically let the straight car
- 00:17:10goes go first if you pull in front of a
- 00:17:12car that could be uh super bad um yield
- 00:17:17in in school or construction zones and
- 00:17:20yield for emergency vehicles we do have
- 00:17:23a slow down Move Over Law in Idaho um
- 00:17:27we're just trying to protect our First
- 00:17:29Responders um and police force out there
- 00:17:33super important I mean they are working
- 00:17:36the dangerous roads that's their office
- 00:17:39right so the law requires that you move
- 00:17:41over a lane or if you can't Slow Down
- 00:17:45When approaching an emergency vehicle
- 00:17:47that has stopped ahead of you on the
- 00:17:48side of the road so if I see this police
- 00:17:51officer talking to uh a
- 00:17:54vehicle on the side of the road and I
- 00:17:57have the option to stay stay in the lane
- 00:17:59right next to him or do a lane change
- 00:18:02and move over to the left lane the law
- 00:18:06actually requires that I have to move
- 00:18:08over to the left lane if I can now if
- 00:18:11there's a car right next to me I can't
- 00:18:12so I just slow down I actually do kind
- 00:18:14of move a little bit left just out of
- 00:18:16respect to give more room to that
- 00:18:21officer
- 00:18:22pedestrians let's talk about that first
- 00:18:24of all blind pedestrians always have the
- 00:18:27right away they can't
- 00:18:28see um I know in in in boisey there is u
- 00:18:33a a building for uh where it's an office
- 00:18:37I think for like a blind
- 00:18:40um government um
- 00:18:44uh entity I don't know what else to call
- 00:18:47it but and people are trained people are
- 00:18:49people learn to walk from that building
- 00:18:52and practice in downtown boisee um and
- 00:18:55you'll see people with these white canes
- 00:18:57um and they're either going blind or
- 00:18:59they are blind and they're learning how
- 00:19:02to kind of interact with traffic talk
- 00:19:04about frightening you
- 00:19:06know um so drivers our part is to yield
- 00:19:11the right away to any blind pedestrian
- 00:19:14carrying a clearly visible white cane so
- 00:19:17that is kind of the symbol I mean the
- 00:19:18law says it has to be a white cane um or
- 00:19:21if they're accompanied by a guide dog so
- 00:19:23if you see a person like holding on to a
- 00:19:25dog be aware they may they may or may
- 00:19:28not be blind um now a hearing impaired
- 00:19:31person also might be accompanied by a
- 00:19:33hearing aid dog so that's kind of a clue
- 00:19:36if you see someone holding a dog um not
- 00:19:39I mean it's tough right they could be
- 00:19:41just walking a dog but be you know just
- 00:19:43be aware regardless it's a pedestrian so
- 00:19:46if it's just a person walking a dog and
- 00:19:49they're in the crosswalk by the way they
- 00:19:51have the RightWay anyway so this is
- 00:19:53nothing new um or really that different
- 00:19:56it is just our job to be extra aware to
- 00:20:00provide the safety for this population
- 00:20:03of people on the road drivers crossing a
- 00:20:06sidewalk and so this old graphic I've
- 00:20:09been using forever
- 00:20:12um is uh kind of the best example I
- 00:20:15could find um and um it just
- 00:20:19demonstrates that the driver of a
- 00:20:21vehicle crossing a sidewalk has to yield
- 00:20:23the right of way to any
- 00:20:26pedestrian and all other traffic that
- 00:20:28includes skateboarders all those things
- 00:20:31that we talked about um before they
- 00:20:33cross the sidewalk so just be aware that
- 00:20:37streets are for drivers sidewalks are
- 00:20:40for
- 00:20:41pedestrians um and they have the right
- 00:20:44away all right let's talk about the um
- 00:20:47the four rules of four-way stops they're
- 00:20:49not that stressful they're pretty simple
- 00:20:52rules yes you should memorize them yes
- 00:20:55you'll practice them in driver's ed yes
- 00:20:57you'll be going through them for the
- 00:20:58rest of your life so just know what they
- 00:21:00are step one rule one whoever gets there
- 00:21:03first goes first easy whoever gets there
- 00:21:07first goes first so there are times when
- 00:21:09I'm approaching an intersection and I
- 00:21:10can tell I'm going to get there at the
- 00:21:11same time as another car and even though
- 00:21:14I know what the law is and who would go
- 00:21:17first a lot of people don't so what I do
- 00:21:20I don't speed up um I slow down and
- 00:21:23that's just my attitude that's my
- 00:21:25approach to driving it's not a big deal
- 00:21:28it's not a race I don't care I don't
- 00:21:30lose if I'm not first um I let them I
- 00:21:33let them I just break a little bit more
- 00:21:36let them get first get their first and
- 00:21:38by the way that just makes it clear they
- 00:21:40got their first so they go first and
- 00:21:42pretty much everybody knows that so that
- 00:21:44um has really helped my four-way stops
- 00:21:48in my life um but if two vehicles do get
- 00:21:51to the intersection at the same time and
- 00:21:54they're next to each other the car on
- 00:21:57the right has the right of way so just
- 00:21:58remember that word right the car on the
- 00:22:00right has the right of way easy the car
- 00:22:03on the right has the right of way if two
- 00:22:05cars get there at the same time and
- 00:22:07they're facing each other the Turning
- 00:22:09car yields we just talked about that to
- 00:22:12the car going straight there we go
- 00:22:14another simple one if you do get there
- 00:22:17you're straight across from another car
- 00:22:18they have their blinker on but you got
- 00:22:20there at the same time you would go
- 00:22:22first now do they know that maybe not
- 00:22:26so be
- 00:22:29um be prepared be
- 00:22:32cautious um but most people know it it's
- 00:22:36pretty simple last rule if two cars get
- 00:22:38there at the same time facing each other
- 00:22:39and one is turning right and the other
- 00:22:41is turning left the car turning right
- 00:22:44has the right of way if two cars get
- 00:22:46there at the same time facing each other
- 00:22:49okay so that's the same situation that
- 00:22:50we just talked about except for now both
- 00:22:53of them are turning ah what do you do
- 00:22:56well the T the car turning right has the
- 00:22:58right of way the car turning right so
- 00:23:02what that really means is don't pull in
- 00:23:04front of the other car still it still
- 00:23:06means that so if you're going left and
- 00:23:08they're going right you're basically
- 00:23:10turning into the same Lane let the car
- 00:23:12going right go first it's it works out
- 00:23:16believe me it works out I guess there is
- 00:23:18another rule I just like the catchy
- 00:23:20phrase the four rules of four-way stops
- 00:23:23right but everybody always asks okay Mr
- 00:23:27John's what if four cars get there all
- 00:23:31at the same time by the way it happens
- 00:23:35rarely but yes it
- 00:23:37happens uh I've experienced it a dozen
- 00:23:40or two or three times who knows over the
- 00:23:43years what do you do because none of
- 00:23:45these rules apply they everybody got
- 00:23:48there at the same time everybody has
- 00:23:49somebody on the right side on their
- 00:23:51right so um okay here's the rule with
- 00:23:55this that's not so much a a law or a
- 00:23:59rule it's just what you do it's what we
- 00:24:01expect of our good drivers which you
- 00:24:04will become we want you to be the one to
- 00:24:07reach out with your hand to the car and
- 00:24:09it helps by the way if you go to the car
- 00:24:11on your right if you if you if you just
- 00:24:14motion with your hand hey you go go to
- 00:24:18the car on your right what that does is
- 00:24:20it creates a flow so after that car goes
- 00:24:27the car on his right goes the car on her
- 00:24:30right goes and that comes right back to
- 00:24:32you yeah you probably end up going
- 00:24:35last you know it might take 20 more
- 00:24:38seconds or 10 more seconds but you will
- 00:24:41have
- 00:24:42been uh the better driver maybe the
- 00:24:45better person in the situation again
- 00:24:48that's Mr johns's take on the whole
- 00:24:50thing but if no one does it you're going
- 00:24:52to sit at that intersection for the rest
- 00:24:53of your life you're going to get very
- 00:24:55hungry so that's what I recommend
- 00:24:58passing let's talk about passing you
- 00:24:59cannot pass on a hill or curve when you
- 00:25:01cannot see a head you can't pass within
- 00:25:04100 fet of an intersection railroad
- 00:25:06bridge or tunnel now you should be
- 00:25:08writing this stuff down uh to study
- 00:25:10later because yeah these are going to
- 00:25:12show up on a test uh at some point and
- 00:25:15some of these on the state test when
- 00:25:18behind a school bus that is stopped to
- 00:25:19load or unload students when there is a
- 00:25:21solid you can't pass we're talking about
- 00:25:24passing when there is a solid yellow
- 00:25:26line on your side of the road between
- 00:25:29you and oncoming traffic when a vehicle
- 00:25:31is stopped at a crosswalk to let a
- 00:25:33pedestrian cross don't pass
- 00:25:37them when you if you have to go off the
- 00:25:39pavement to pass you can't do that you
- 00:25:42you have to stay on the road so we're
- 00:25:44talking about if you have to go around a
- 00:25:46car you can't do it if your tires even
- 00:25:49two of your tires or one of your tires
- 00:25:52touches the dirt or the gravel and and
- 00:25:55is off the road it's a good way to
- 00:25:57remember it that's the law all right
- 00:25:59speeding this is kind of interesting uh
- 00:26:02a fairly new law in Idaho if you're
- 00:26:04driving a vehicle that's not Towing
- 00:26:06another vehicle you can exceed the
- 00:26:08posted speed limit by up to 15 miles per
- 00:26:11hour while passing another vehicle that
- 00:26:13is traveling below the posted speed
- 00:26:15limit on a two-lane road okay that's a
- 00:26:18lot of words it just means you can speed
- 00:26:21to pass someone else who's going
- 00:26:25slow and the specifics of that you can't
- 00:26:28be towing a car they have to be going
- 00:26:31beneath the speed limit you can only go
- 00:26:34up to 15 M hour miles an hour over the
- 00:26:37speed limit and there's another rule the
- 00:26:40posted speed limit has to be at least 55
- 00:26:43so you're on a highway you're you're in
- 00:26:45a fast situation it's a 55 or higher
- 00:26:48Zone and you're allowed to speed I think
- 00:26:51what this has done is
- 00:26:54um made it so like big heavy trucks
- 00:26:57hauling heavy loads or RVs that can
- 00:27:02barely go the speed limit uh on trips on
- 00:27:05the windy mountain roads of Idaho that
- 00:27:07hold up remember if you hold up three
- 00:27:09cars you have to pull
- 00:27:12over we know that not everybody follows
- 00:27:14the laws so uh and you can't P be you're
- 00:27:17like well I'd like to pass this person
- 00:27:20but I can't because they're going 54 and
- 00:27:23a 55 well I guess that wouldn't work has
- 00:27:25to be at least 55 they're going 5 7 in a
- 00:27:3060 okay
- 00:27:33um you would just have to go behind them
- 00:27:37the whole way for the whole trip now
- 00:27:40with this law in a safe place a passing
- 00:27:44zone where you can see that there's an
- 00:27:47opening for a long
- 00:27:49ways or there's two lanes or's like a
- 00:27:51passing Lane you can punch it a little
- 00:27:54bit and get it up to 15 M an hour over
- 00:27:56the posted speed limit to pass excellent
- 00:27:58you must also return to the right lane
- 00:28:00oh that's a typo return to the right
- 00:28:03lane and reduce your speed back to the
- 00:28:06posted speed limit as soon as
- 00:28:10possible passing on the right passing on
- 00:28:12the right well normally you don't do
- 00:28:15that but you can pass another vehicle on
- 00:28:17the right only if the other vehicle is
- 00:28:20stopped and signaling to turn left
- 00:28:22that's this graphic right here so you
- 00:28:24can see um it's a one I mean this is a
- 00:28:27two lane Main Road this is interesting
- 00:28:29this middle color should probably be
- 00:28:31yellow not white because this would mean
- 00:28:33this is a one-way street so that's
- 00:28:36that's incorrect um I just got this off
- 00:28:38the internet I didn't make it but maybe
- 00:28:40I'll fix it this should be yellow
- 00:28:42because this is a two-lane road we're
- 00:28:43assuming this car a is turning here car
- 00:28:47B is like oh man what if there's a whole
- 00:28:50bunch of cars coming lots and lots and
- 00:28:52lots of cars it's five o'clock traffic
- 00:28:53lots and lots and lots and the car B
- 00:28:55just wants to go around well this is a
- 00:28:58pretty wide Lane uh he can do it that
- 00:29:01driver can do it um if he can do it
- 00:29:05without be driving in the grass remember
- 00:29:08the law says you have to stay on the
- 00:29:09road so this is a great other than these
- 00:29:12lines should be
- 00:29:13yellow that's just me being picky
- 00:29:16driver's ed guy um car B can go around
- 00:29:20even if it was a little bit skinnier the
- 00:29:22lane is skinnier if he can do it without
- 00:29:25getting on the grass or hitting that the
- 00:29:28blue car he can pass on the right by the
- 00:29:32way you can also pass on the right if
- 00:29:33there are multiple Lanes going in the
- 00:29:34direction you're traveling of course you
- 00:29:36can so this circle graphic over here
- 00:29:38just is like okay this is a one-way
- 00:29:40Street um or there's two lanes going the
- 00:29:44same direction and someone's going
- 00:29:47slow uh or turning in front of you you
- 00:29:51just do a lane change so that's obvious
- 00:29:53that's so obvious but this other one
- 00:29:56maybe not so much so keep that in mind
- 00:29:58please slow moving Vehicles we do live
- 00:30:01in Idaho we do see this uh scenario some
- 00:30:05of you much more than
- 00:30:08others as I was looking at this graphic
- 00:30:10I'm like I'm not sure if he's
- 00:30:12legal so it's a little hard to tell in
- 00:30:15the daytime any idea what I'm talking
- 00:30:18about I mean looks like it he's got two
- 00:30:21great slow moving vehicle signs right so
- 00:30:24by the way slow moving vehicle signs are
- 00:30:27triangles with a point up yield signs
- 00:30:31they're flipped and they say yield so um
- 00:30:33keep that keep that straight and also
- 00:30:35the tips are cut off on the red border
- 00:30:38around a slow-moving vehicle sign um a
- 00:30:41regular passenger vehicle slowing down
- 00:30:43three or more cars on a rural road or
- 00:30:46Highway must pull over and let traffic
- 00:30:48pass I just talked about that previously
- 00:30:51magic number is three if you're slowing
- 00:30:54down three or more cars by law you have
- 00:30:57to pull over when you can where you can
- 00:31:00and let cars pass you now with
- 00:31:06tractors vehicles or other vehicles that
- 00:31:08are designated as slow moving Vehicles
- 00:31:11they they move from field to field as
- 00:31:13some of you know um so they do have to
- 00:31:16be on public roads to do that um but
- 00:31:19they also have to follow some some
- 00:31:22laws of being a vehicle on the road so
- 00:31:25they have to have that sign the bright
- 00:31:28orange slow moving vehicle sign they
- 00:31:31have to travel no faster than 25 miles
- 00:31:35per hour so when you see one you know
- 00:31:38they're going 25 or
- 00:31:40less um and they have to have a foot
- 00:31:42break so they can stop uh but they also
- 00:31:46have to have turn signals and that's
- 00:31:47what I was looking at with this tractor
- 00:31:49like
- 00:31:50um hard to tell in the daytime you know
- 00:31:53but you have to have turn signals also
- 00:31:56parking you must part closer than 18 in
- 00:31:59from the curb so that means you have to
- 00:32:02be like this this double-sided Arrow has
- 00:32:05to
- 00:32:06be 18 or less inches 18 or less you
- 00:32:10cannot be out further into the street
- 00:32:12that's all it means I don't like to bump
- 00:32:14the curb it's hard on your tires and
- 00:32:16wheels
- 00:32:18um and so you'll get used to it it it
- 00:32:20takes some practice you know if you
- 00:32:23shoot for a foot about a foot 12 in the
- 00:32:26length the length of a
- 00:32:27ruler you're good you know how do you do
- 00:32:30that well practice that's all it is
- 00:32:33practice but the law says you cannot be
- 00:32:35further than 18 in away or you're too
- 00:32:37far out in the street that basically is
- 00:32:39how they know like how wide to to make
- 00:32:42roads cuz like well if a car is here but
- 00:32:44it's 18 inches from the curb okay and a
- 00:32:46car is on the other side of the street
- 00:32:4818 inches from the curb that leaves you
- 00:32:51know how much room this is how many how
- 00:32:53much traffic we need so that's why
- 00:32:56there's that law let's talk about
- 00:32:58parking on a hill maybe you live on a
- 00:33:02hill um and you don't want your car to
- 00:33:04roll away that's the point the whole
- 00:33:06point of parking on a hill and knowing
- 00:33:08how to do it if you just think
- 00:33:10of how what do I do with my tires so I
- 00:33:13don't my car does not roll away so when
- 00:33:16I come back from or I come out from my
- 00:33:18house or it's parked at the mall and
- 00:33:20they have a steep I don't know I don't
- 00:33:22know I'm trying to think of a situation
- 00:33:25or a scenario um you want to come out
- 00:33:27and go oh where's my car um so let's
- 00:33:30look at the far left side this is
- 00:33:31downhill you are parking downhill so the
- 00:33:34the whole point here if you just
- 00:33:36remember this you don't want your car to
- 00:33:38roll into
- 00:33:41traffic that could hurt somebody kill
- 00:33:43somebody right so this one downhill you
- 00:33:47turn your front wheels right if for some
- 00:33:49reason it pops out of gear or an
- 00:33:51emergency brake isn't working it will
- 00:33:53this right tire will stop against the
- 00:33:56curb hopefully right it'll it'll you can
- 00:33:59actually lock it you can roll into the
- 00:34:01curb before you stop your car um and
- 00:34:05some steering wheels even lock when you
- 00:34:07turn them so this car can't go anywhere
- 00:34:10that's a safety thing okay the car uh
- 00:34:12the picture in the middle uphill so now
- 00:34:15headlights are going up okay so we're
- 00:34:17parking uphill well now we have to do it
- 00:34:19just the opposite turn your wheels to
- 00:34:21the left and then lock it and you can
- 00:34:24actually roll back into the curbs so the
- 00:34:27tire is kind of locked touching the
- 00:34:30cement the curb um and if it pops out of
- 00:34:33gear for whatever
- 00:34:34reason it the T the tire will hold that
- 00:34:38car it's pretty impressive how it works
- 00:34:40but it does work it's just kind of
- 00:34:42locked against that curb so and then
- 00:34:44this third option over here uphill or
- 00:34:47downhill doesn't matter if there's no
- 00:34:49curb you want
- 00:34:52to turn your wheels right so if it does
- 00:34:55pop out of gear It Go goes off the
- 00:34:58road it won't pull won't go into
- 00:35:01oncoming traffic right so that's kind of
- 00:35:03the scenario so think about that and
- 00:35:06these pictures should help you to kind
- 00:35:08of memorize and understand the concept
- 00:35:11uh to keep your car from rolling into
- 00:35:13traffic how would I lock my wheels
- 00:35:16against the curb or which way should I
- 00:35:18turn my wheels to roll away from traffic
- 00:35:21so hope that
- 00:35:23helps all right this slide man these
- 00:35:26numbers may be hard to memorize write
- 00:35:29them down yes you'll see them yes you'll
- 00:35:32see them on the state test which
- 00:35:36ones I can't really tell you they change
- 00:35:39the test once you know from time to time
- 00:35:42if I had to guess I mean my job is to
- 00:35:44help you pass that test um and
- 00:35:47understand the law and know how to drive
- 00:35:49and all that stuff too but I would say
- 00:35:51they're going to ask you the how far
- 00:35:53from a fire hydrant can you park and how
- 00:35:55far from a stop sign
- 00:35:57if I had to guess I've seen that
- 00:35:58question multiple times on tests so let
- 00:36:01me go through these you cannot park in a
- 00:36:03bike lane or on a sidewalk you can't
- 00:36:06park in front of a driveway or on a
- 00:36:08freeway you can't park closer than 15
- 00:36:12feet from a fire hydrant okay just think
- 00:36:15you know fire trucks need to get in
- 00:36:16there to hook up if there's a fire so
- 00:36:19that's why 15 fet 15 ft just remember 15
- 00:36:22fire hydrant 15 for the fire hydrant 20
- 00:36:24ft of a crosswalk 30t of a stop
- 00:36:27sign I got a ticket once for parking
- 00:36:30like 20 ft from a stop
- 00:36:32sign which I thought was a long ways
- 00:36:35away this is downtown boisee and there
- 00:36:38were not very many parking places and
- 00:36:41I'm like oh and then I found a place
- 00:36:43near a corner like I was probably I
- 00:36:46think about 20 ft from a stop sign it
- 00:36:48looked like I could fit three cars there
- 00:36:51um I came back out and had a ticket and
- 00:36:54it said have to be 30 ft I'm like oh I
- 00:36:56should know that 30 feet that's a long
- 00:36:59ways so just remember 30 feet from a
- 00:37:01stop sign wow that's a long ways it's so
- 00:37:04the intersection is visible that's it I
- 00:37:06mean they all have they all have reasons
- 00:37:09that make sense you know did I like
- 00:37:10getting a ticket n not so much uh did I
- 00:37:13learn from it yep 30 feet from a stop
- 00:37:16sign so now you know you don't have to
- 00:37:18go get a ticket to find out don't park
- 00:37:20closer than 30 ft from a stop sign and
- 00:37:22the other one I don't think I've ever
- 00:37:23seen on a test but you know don't hold
- 00:37:25me to that if it's on your test you
- 00:37:28cannot park within 50 ft of a railroad
- 00:37:30crossing that makes
- 00:37:32sense you can't park next to a red or
- 00:37:35blue painted curb those are emergency or
- 00:37:38handicapped curbs you can't park in a
- 00:37:40parking space that says handicapped of
- 00:37:42course not of course not never do that
- 00:37:45turn signals let's talk about signals
- 00:37:48signals you always have to Signal when
- 00:37:50changing lanes always always always the
- 00:37:53driver's ed um methodology ology is uh
- 00:37:58for just about all of us now your
- 00:38:00instructor may do something different
- 00:38:01but we used um when I was in the car um
- 00:38:05and most of the instructors that I know
- 00:38:07talk about
- 00:38:08smog not the dirty filthy sky but smog
- 00:38:13standing for Signal check your mirrors
- 00:38:17look over your look over your
- 00:38:19shoulder right and then go if clear so
- 00:38:23signal s
- 00:38:25signal check your mirrors M look over o
- 00:38:29over your shoulder and g go if clear
- 00:38:34okay and if it's not clear don't go so I
- 00:38:38would use that term all the time I'd say
- 00:38:40let's do a smog to the left I mean I
- 00:38:42just got used to saying that so it's the
- 00:38:44same thing um as a lane change so you
- 00:38:47have to Signal when changing lanes um
- 00:38:50it's not for you it's for the people
- 00:38:51around you you have to Signal when
- 00:38:53passing another vehicle you have to
- 00:38:54Signal when you're turning at an in
- 00:38:56intersection or entrance to something
- 00:38:59you have to Signal when you're pulling
- 00:39:00away from a curb cuz that's really a
- 00:39:02lane change so in driver's ed if you're
- 00:39:04at the curb expect the instructor to ask
- 00:39:07you to Signal before you pull
- 00:39:09away signal when entering or leaving a
- 00:39:12highway or freeway signal one pulling
- 00:39:14over to the side of the road just the
- 00:39:16opposite so you signal slide over and
- 00:39:18stop next to a curb and here's an
- 00:39:22interesting kind of controversial one
- 00:39:24signal when exiting around
- 00:39:28about there's a lot of discussion about
- 00:39:31this um for sure I've been involved in
- 00:39:33some of these uh discussions with
- 00:39:35lawmakers and others I think at one
- 00:39:39point they expected us to Signal when we
- 00:39:41entered and exited and we argued
- 00:39:43roundabout you can only go right so why
- 00:39:46why signal um but the law says you have
- 00:39:49to signal and an intersection and that's
- 00:39:51considered an intersection it's a
- 00:39:52roundabout
- 00:39:54intersection so um It Now does not say
- 00:39:57that um that you have to signal in but
- 00:40:01you do have to Signal out when you're
- 00:40:03exiting the roundabout why is that
- 00:40:05controversial well it's kind of hard
- 00:40:08sometimes when you're going around a
- 00:40:10roundabout and your hands are on the
- 00:40:12Wheel to to reach to to get your turn
- 00:40:15signal um so and the answer of course is
- 00:40:19well it's the law so slow down a little
- 00:40:20bit be able to do it you know so be
- 00:40:22prepared for it have your finger have
- 00:40:24your hands in a place where you can hold
- 00:40:26hold the wheel and reach and just
- 00:40:29quickly you know turn on your right
- 00:40:30signal not quickly you still have to
- 00:40:31signal for 5 seconds which is an by the
- 00:40:34way that's another thing you have to
- 00:40:36signal for 5 seconds but in a roundabout
- 00:40:38you really can't do that so but it's
- 00:40:41still the law so my job is to let you
- 00:40:43know what the law is and yes you should
- 00:40:44signal when you leave roundabout and you
- 00:40:46have to signal for at least 5 seconds or
- 00:40:48100
- 00:40:49feet we used to teach 100 feet but most
- 00:40:52students and teachers wouldn't know what
- 00:40:55that was like what is is 30 what it's
- 00:40:57100t when you're going 35 miles hour or
- 00:41:00when you're going 75 miles an hour um so
- 00:41:03we really have changed that to 5 seconds
- 00:41:05because everybody can count to five so
- 00:41:07we say hey would you turn at the at this
- 00:41:09intersection one you click 1 1,00 2
- 00:41:121,000 3 1000 4 1,000 5 1000 uh and
- 00:41:17everybody can do that and sometimes
- 00:41:19you'll hear the instructor doing that
- 00:41:21and sometimes we ask you to count out
- 00:41:23loud uh so we know that you know and 5
- 00:41:26seconds is is always 5 seconds so if
- 00:41:28you're going 75 M hour or 10 it's 5
- 00:41:31seconds so it doesn't really matter all
- 00:41:33right turning right at a red light at a
- 00:41:35steady red light in Idaho and in Most
- 00:41:37states after you stop and look for cross
- 00:41:41traffic your yield to cross traffic at
- 00:41:44anybody in the in the crosswalk you can
- 00:41:46go after you
- 00:41:48stop I remember when my my wording
- 00:41:51wasn't very clear once in a driver's
- 00:41:53head class and I said you can turn right
- 00:41:55at a red
- 00:41:57I I I assumed that a student knew that I
- 00:42:01meant she had to stop first so she blew
- 00:42:04a red light went flying around the
- 00:42:05corner about 30 miles an hour so broke
- 00:42:09the law uh running a red light it was
- 00:42:11going way too fast um it surprised all
- 00:42:15of us I don't think it surprised her
- 00:42:18because she thought she could go right
- 00:42:19on a red so ever since then I have said
- 00:42:22after you stop and yield to cross
- 00:42:24traffic and pedestrian
- 00:42:27um you can go on a red light if it's
- 00:42:30clear so uh make sure you know that law
- 00:42:34um you can go right can you go left on a
- 00:42:36red light wait a minute you can go left
- 00:42:38on a red light hey you want to
- 00:42:42uh you want to
- 00:42:46uh challenge that's the word you want to
- 00:42:48challenge your parents or challenge
- 00:42:50somebody ask them hey an Idaho can you
- 00:42:53turn left on a red
- 00:42:54light they're going to say no because
- 00:42:57most people don't know this law I just
- 00:42:59looked it up again just to make sure I
- 00:43:01got the wording correct um the the law
- 00:43:04is when turning left from a one-way
- 00:43:07Street onto a oneway street you can go
- 00:43:11left when the lights red after stopping
- 00:43:15and yielding to cross traffic and the
- 00:43:18crosswalk and less otherwise posted it
- 00:43:21may say no no left turns but just so you
- 00:43:24know uh when we do in driver's ed
- 00:43:27Sometimes some instructors will some
- 00:43:28instructors won't I would do it if I
- 00:43:30could because it feels so weird because
- 00:43:34it feels like you're running the red
- 00:43:35light it really does because you go
- 00:43:36through the red light you go under the
- 00:43:38red light and turn left but it's legal
- 00:43:40totally legal I'm sure the people behind
- 00:43:42you think you just ran the red light and
- 00:43:44it says driver's ed on the back of the
- 00:43:45car and they're going what is that
- 00:43:47School teaching these kids it's the law
- 00:43:50we can do it if it's safe and there's no
- 00:43:52cross traffic so another law that's
- 00:43:54interesting uh is the Open Range range
- 00:43:56law when
- 00:43:57posted animals have the right of way
- 00:44:00we're talking about cows you know
- 00:44:03Farmers that raise
- 00:44:06cattle can post or have a sign posted
- 00:44:09that says hey this is open range at some
- 00:44:12point I think it was like ranchers that
- 00:44:14had like a thousand acres there's no way
- 00:44:16they could afford to fence in a th ACR
- 00:44:20of land
- 00:44:24um or even a to put it next to the
- 00:44:27highway so at some point the law
- 00:44:31became hey this is open range and if you
- 00:44:34hit one of my cows you have to pay for
- 00:44:37it if you survive the crash and you have
- 00:44:40to pay for your own car so it's an
- 00:44:42expensive and dangerous situation I've
- 00:44:45always thought um interesting law I've
- 00:44:48always thought but I get it this is
- 00:44:50Idaho it's not New York City um and so
- 00:44:53be aware if you see cattle moving um um
- 00:44:56at all just know that if they walk in
- 00:44:58front of you and you hit it and kill it
- 00:45:00you pay for it and what a mess right
- 00:45:04Idaho's open container
- 00:45:06law it's illegal to drink alcohol while
- 00:45:09driving or even transport an
- 00:45:13unsealed which means it's been
- 00:45:15opened container of alcohol in the
- 00:45:18inside of a vehicle so this picture this
- 00:45:20graphic is a great example if this is
- 00:45:22just on the back floor the floorboard of
- 00:45:24your car uh uh even if no alcohol is
- 00:45:28pouring out of it um it is an open
- 00:45:31container uh it's against the law so
- 00:45:34make sure I mean hopefully that's not
- 00:45:36even a scenario that would be in
- 00:45:40your uh reality um but just
- 00:45:45know um maybe you're riding with a
- 00:45:48friend and they have an old beer bottle
- 00:45:49sitting in the back seat um you could
- 00:45:52get in trouble so you just make sure
- 00:45:54there's no uh un uh uh unsealed bottles
- 00:45:59they can be in the trunk um it says in
- 00:46:02the in in the inside of a vehicle but um
- 00:46:07it just so be aware of that
- 00:46:09law other laws that you should know and
- 00:46:12many of these facts are on the state
- 00:46:14test headlights must be lighted from
- 00:46:17Sunset to Sunrise or when visibility is
- 00:46:20poor and I believe the definition of
- 00:46:22sunset and sunrise is like a 30 minutes
- 00:46:25a half hour before um sunrise and a half
- 00:46:29hour after Sunset that's how they
- 00:46:32interpret that so when the sun is
- 00:46:33actually down you have a half hour on
- 00:46:35either either side of that you have to
- 00:46:37have your headlights on you must now
- 00:46:39here's a question I know is on the state
- 00:46:41test memorize this you must dim your
- 00:46:44brights 500 feet before meeting and 200
- 00:46:48feet before coming up behind another
- 00:46:49vehicle we're talking about your brights
- 00:46:51so your brights that like bright they
- 00:46:53like blind people right and and it's
- 00:46:56pretty easy to remember why but maybe
- 00:46:58not so easy to remember the numbers so
- 00:47:00just remember 500 and 200 500 and 200
- 00:47:03I'm not sure how to remember that but
- 00:47:05500 and 200 the difference is a head-on
- 00:47:09collision is way more dangerous and so
- 00:47:11it's a bigger number so 500 feet before
- 00:47:15coming around a corner and another car
- 00:47:17is coming at you you have to dim go back
- 00:47:20to normal headlights and if you're
- 00:47:22coming around a corner and there's a car
- 00:47:24in front of you going the same direction
- 00:47:25ction make sure you Dim your
- 00:47:27headlights 200 ft or more or more this
- 00:47:31is minimum 200 ft before you come up
- 00:47:34behind them okay uh this one we talked
- 00:47:36about already it's illegal to race
- 00:47:38another car or show any sign of speed um
- 00:47:41next one windows and windshields must be
- 00:47:43kept Clean and Free of stickers signs or
- 00:47:45posters except those required by law
- 00:47:49good to know you can't have like bumper
- 00:47:51stickers and stickers in your on your
- 00:47:53glass in your car except the those
- 00:47:56required by law
- 00:47:58so I've had people ask me well what
- 00:48:00about the little stickers that the oil
- 00:48:01company you like when you oil change
- 00:48:03companies when you go to Jiffy Lube or
- 00:48:04whatever they put a little sticker
- 00:48:07there good question right the law says
- 00:48:11kept Clean and Free of
- 00:48:14stickers do I have a sticker in my car
- 00:48:17um from a oil change company I do up in
- 00:48:21the upper left corner almost all the way
- 00:48:23off to the side as far as possible
- 00:48:26um so that's a tough one that's a tough
- 00:48:29one um but I think if you that's kind of
- 00:48:32understandable and we kind of are
- 00:48:33required I mean to do oil changes at
- 00:48:36some point now you might do your own oil
- 00:48:38changes and not have any stickers like
- 00:48:41that at all fine that's
- 00:48:42great I think they're really I think the
- 00:48:45you know there's the law and then
- 00:48:46there's the intent of the law you've
- 00:48:48heard that I think they just mean don't
- 00:48:50cover your windshield and wind windows
- 00:48:53with a bunch of stickers right with
- 00:48:54stickers not a bunch but stickers you
- 00:48:56can't have stickers put them on your car
- 00:48:58or don't put them on at all so my job is
- 00:49:01to let you know what the law
- 00:49:03is and then you choose um when a load of
- 00:49:06something extends four feet or more out
- 00:49:08the back of your vehicle you have to
- 00:49:10have a red flag tied from the very end
- 00:49:12of that so I always say hey when you're
- 00:49:14going to Lowe's or Home Depot you get a
- 00:49:17uh a long 2x4 and it's 4 feet or longer
- 00:49:21sticking out the back of the truck uh or
- 00:49:24the car you have to um have a red flag
- 00:49:30now I know those
- 00:49:31companies usually have like a little bin
- 00:49:34right out front and a hammer and some
- 00:49:36little tacks with a bunch of plastic
- 00:49:38Flags you can just take a a red plastic
- 00:49:41flag tack it on the end of your 2x4 and
- 00:49:44you're legal and safe the reason is if
- 00:49:48people pull up behind you and they pull
- 00:49:49up like they normally do that 2x4 is
- 00:49:51going to go right through the windshield
- 00:49:53and could really be bad bad news so
- 00:49:56that's why it is illegal to drive
- 00:49:58recklessly or
- 00:49:59inattentively now that law covers a lot
- 00:50:02of
- 00:50:04stuff and it's a good law I'm happy that
- 00:50:06we have that
- 00:50:08law because it covers so much so you
- 00:50:10can't be Reckless and what does that
- 00:50:12mean boy there's a lot too fast not
- 00:50:15driving
- 00:50:16straight um starting and stopping too
- 00:50:20quickly uh you know there's a lot of
- 00:50:24different ways you could be L while
- 00:50:26driving and the other one inattentively
- 00:50:28that's why we we almost didn't need a
- 00:50:30texting and driving bill um because or
- 00:50:34law um because we already had a law that
- 00:50:37said you can't be you can't drive
- 00:50:39inattentively not paying attention but
- 00:50:43texting has become such a dangerous
- 00:50:45deadly thing that um Idaho chose to make
- 00:50:49it a separate clear law to really get
- 00:50:53the point across and I and I and I was
- 00:50:55part of that and I agree with that
- 00:50:58um so you're you know it's covered in
- 00:51:02two different ways one is you can't be
- 00:51:03in
- 00:51:04attentive and two is you can't text you
- 00:51:07can't text while driving period uh and
- 00:51:09the law how it's word it is you can't R
- 00:51:12type or send a text message while
- 00:51:14driving uh and behind the wheel of the
- 00:51:16car that means not at a red light not at
- 00:51:19a stop sign uh if you pull over um fine
- 00:51:23but you can't be like in control of the
- 00:51:26vehicle in a traffic situation start
- 00:51:28driving or stopped can't can't do it so
- 00:51:33speaking of that texting and driving
- 00:51:35since January 1st 2021 it's been illegal
- 00:51:38to use a mobile device or phone while
- 00:51:40driving unless completely voice
- 00:51:44controlled in 2021 distracted driving
- 00:51:47made up 18% of all of the crashes here
- 00:51:49in Idaho and caused 11% of all the
- 00:51:51deaths from traffic crashes these
- 00:51:54distracted d driving crashes cause cost
- 00:51:57us $842 million taxpayers if you have a
- 00:52:02job you pay your taxes go up $842
- 00:52:06million in one year because of
- 00:52:09distracted driving studies show that
- 00:52:11distracted driving can be six times
- 00:52:13deadlier than drunk
- 00:52:15driving and I always will say on the
- 00:52:19road right now there might be depending
- 00:52:21on your area there might be three or
- 00:52:22four drunk people driving around pretty
- 00:52:24scary but how many people are on their
- 00:52:26phone or you know and have a phone right
- 00:52:30there uh just about 100% of them I mean
- 00:52:34they have a phone how many of them are
- 00:52:35texting I don't know but it's more than
- 00:52:37three or four like the drunk drivers
- 00:52:39it's a a lot more so it's so common it's
- 00:52:43so common and it's easy to get sucked
- 00:52:45into it we'll talk about this later in
- 00:52:47the distracted driving unit but it's
- 00:52:49just a habit and you have to break it
- 00:52:51it's hard but you just it's so easy just
- 00:52:54to get caught up in your text because
- 00:52:56your mind goes somewhere else depending
- 00:52:58on what the text
- 00:52:59is and for a second or two or five
- 00:53:03that's all you care about while you're
- 00:53:06driving um Idaho State Patrol Sergeant
- 00:53:09Kurt Sprout says if you're texting or
- 00:53:12using a device while behind the wheel of
- 00:53:13a car you're not
- 00:53:17driving here are some controversial aaho
- 00:53:20laws and we'll and we'll end it here um
- 00:53:23because I think it's interesting to what
- 00:53:25the laws are and some of them I'm not
- 00:53:26sure we agree with but they're still
- 00:53:28laws so that doesn't matter um um you
- 00:53:31can you can still get involved you can
- 00:53:33still write your Congressman you can go
- 00:53:35still go speak about it you there are
- 00:53:37things you can do I shouldn't say
- 00:53:39there's nothing you can do about it just
- 00:53:40really the opposite you can if there's a
- 00:53:42cause that is is worth your uh time and
- 00:53:47effort um I just find these interesting
- 00:53:49or controversial so unbelted passengers
- 00:53:52can ride in the back of a truck like the
- 00:53:53bed of a truck still in in Idaho you can
- 00:53:56have people in the back of your truck
- 00:53:58and drive around at the same time we're
- 00:54:01saying wearing a seat Bel is the safest
- 00:54:03thing you can do do to remain safe in a
- 00:54:08car but throw a bunch of buddies in the
- 00:54:10back of your truck and drive around it's
- 00:54:11fine it's weird it's
- 00:54:13controversial uh it's strange it's a
- 00:54:16strange law second one motorcycle
- 00:54:18helmets are only required for those
- 00:54:20under the age of
- 00:54:2121 it's like what the human skull is is
- 00:54:24is so much stronger after that that it
- 00:54:27it it doesn't matter anymore we know
- 00:54:29that's not true um because of the
- 00:54:33crashes and deaths that happen with
- 00:54:35motorcycle riders who don't wear helmets
- 00:54:37and even those who do it's such a and I
- 00:54:40rode I rode motorcycles for a while um I
- 00:54:42G I just stopped I had some close calls
- 00:54:44and realized um you're so you're so um
- 00:54:50at
- 00:54:51risk but the law says if you're under 21
- 00:54:54you have to wear a helmet
- 00:54:56after after that you can choose uh you
- 00:54:58can't be pulled over and ticketed just
- 00:55:00for not wearing a seat belt even though
- 00:55:01it might be the most important thing you
- 00:55:02can do um it's a $10 ticket for adults
- 00:55:06it's called a secondary law secondary
- 00:55:08ticket um 10 bucks so again it's the
- 00:55:11most important thing you could do wear
- 00:55:13your seat belt and we say that over and
- 00:55:14over again but in Idaho
- 00:55:17it's um it's just a minor ticket so I
- 00:55:21find that interesting and maybe that'll
- 00:55:22change someday but right now if someone
- 00:55:25a police officer sees you not wearing a
- 00:55:27seat belt they can't pull you over
- 00:55:29unless they see something else like your
- 00:55:31blinker not working you you uh you don't
- 00:55:34have a light on your license plate frame
- 00:55:37so they can see your license plate or
- 00:55:40something then they can give you a
- 00:55:42ticket um for that other thing and the
- 00:55:44seat belt you can't drive even one mile
- 00:55:47per hour over the posted speed limit
- 00:55:48because that's
- 00:55:49speeding let alone the 5 10 15 that
- 00:55:52other drivers that many other drivers do
- 00:55:56I'm not sure if that's really
- 00:55:57controversial but if the speed limit is
- 00:55:5935 you have to go 35 or less that's you
- 00:56:01know bicycles don't have to stop at stop
- 00:56:04signs again not sure that's really
- 00:56:06controversial uh and in an open range
- 00:56:09area the driver has to pay to replace a
- 00:56:11Wandering cow he or she hits or
- 00:56:14kills so keep in mind there is no doover
- 00:56:17there is no oops sign poor choices
- 00:56:20including driving too fast distracted
- 00:56:22driving racing not wearing your seat
- 00:56:24belt
- 00:56:25and other things um can be a driver's
- 00:56:28Last Choice so knowing the laws knowing
- 00:56:32how to be a safer driver is what this
- 00:56:35class is all about driving is amazing
- 00:56:38it's it's such a big important part of
- 00:56:41life in my opinion the ability to get up
- 00:56:44and go places in a
- 00:56:47vehicle um I drive a convertible always
- 00:56:50have I take the top down when it's warm
- 00:56:52or even when it's not very warm and I
- 00:56:55just love it I just love it I'm not
- 00:56:57going to ruin that by being stupid and
- 00:57:01killing myself getting in a crash
- 00:57:04hurting someone else or killing someone
- 00:57:05else just follow the laws do do what um
- 00:57:09I need to do to keep safe on the road
- 00:57:13and it's usually just as simple as go
- 00:57:15the right speed pay attention that's it
- 00:57:18and you'll be driving for a long long
- 00:57:20time thanks for joining me for in this
- 00:57:23presentation uh I appreciate talking to
- 00:57:25you and hope this is an exciting thing
- 00:57:29for you as you move closer towards
- 00:57:31getting your driver's license for now
- 00:57:32though Mr John's is
