00:00:00
the truth about root
00:00:02
canals I'm Dr Ellie and in this video
00:00:05
we're going to talk about things that
00:00:07
you may not have been told about root
00:00:09
canals have you been told you need a
00:00:11
root canal maybe you have maybe you know
00:00:14
what it is but so many people sit there
00:00:17
without knowing what a root canal is and
00:00:20
there's a lot of fear these days there
00:00:22
was a documentary that was up on the
00:00:24
internet for a short while I actually
00:00:27
knew the people who were involved in
00:00:29
that and then was a lot of editing that
00:00:31
was a little bit upsetting because it's
00:00:34
very easy to get the wrong impression of
00:00:37
a root canal that's the first thing to
00:00:40
misunderstand the value of having a root
00:00:43
canal if you have a dead tooth the
00:00:45
dangers of a root canal and what are
00:00:47
your other options and compare and
00:00:49
contrast those options it's a very
00:00:52
important decision so I want to run
00:00:54
through it a little bit today so if
00:00:56
you're told you need a root canal what's
00:00:57
happened to your tooth you may not even
00:01:00
have a big cavity in it so what's
00:01:03
occurred inside your tooth are live
00:01:08
Parts there's a live part right in the
00:01:11
center and it runs all the way down the
00:01:14
roots all of this here is full of cells
00:01:18
and blood vessels and nerves and this is
00:01:23
basically the life of your tooth is in
00:01:26
the inside of it now every time a tooth
00:01:29
is damaged and it can be a hit from the
00:01:31
outside that's one way a tooth is
00:01:33
damaged and you don't always see
00:01:36
immediately the fact that your tooth has
00:01:38
died you see when you have an accident
00:01:41
say you're in a car accident this blood
00:01:44
supply that goes down your roots can get
00:01:47
severed it gets cut off and then the
00:01:51
problem is that this tooth won't have a
00:01:54
proper blood supply and the space or the
00:01:57
place where all this live tissue was
00:02:00
actually dies and bacteria can get into
00:02:04
this empty space and make it their home
00:02:07
and all of this procedure the dying of
00:02:09
the tooth the replacement with bad
00:02:11
bacteria that can take up to 10 years
00:02:15
before you have an absolute problem and
00:02:18
the problem is that all this space the
00:02:21
pulp the inside of the tooth has now
00:02:23
become hugely infected and there's
00:02:26
nowhere for the infection to go it's
00:02:28
bubbling it's got liquids it's got bad
00:02:31
bacteria producing toxins the whole of
00:02:34
this thing is on fire that's when your
00:02:36
tooth is painful you bite on it and it
00:02:39
feels painful and that's because there's
00:02:41
so much pressure buildup inside the
00:02:44
tooth and if there's no way for it to
00:02:47
get out it will actually burst like a
00:02:50
volcano into the bone area at the bottom
00:02:54
of your tooth that's why a dead tooth
00:02:57
that forms an abscess
00:03:00
is not only so dangerous but it's so
00:03:03
painful so you go to the dentist and you
00:03:06
say that you have a tooth that you can't
00:03:08
bite on or maybe it didn't burst out it
00:03:11
just has died quietly and without so
00:03:14
much infection then this tooth might
00:03:16
turn a different color it might turn
00:03:18
gray or black completely the whole of
00:03:22
the color of the tooth will become
00:03:24
darkened so your dentist tells you you
00:03:26
need a root canal what is a root canal
00:03:28
well a root canal will be a process that
00:03:31
a dentist who is specialized in this
00:03:34
treatment and I would always recommend
00:03:36
you go to an
00:03:38
endodontist Endo means inside and
00:03:40
dontist and inside dentist they want to
00:03:43
clean out all this inside area and
00:03:47
they'll do it by making a hole in the
00:03:50
top of your tooth and they'll go through
00:03:52
that hole and literally clean out so
00:03:56
that this entire area is now clean
00:04:00
there's no more bacteria there's no more
00:04:02
blood supply there's nothing and your
00:04:05
endodontist will
00:04:07
fill instead of all this being bad this
00:04:11
all will now be clean and your
00:04:13
endodontist will put a filling in this
00:04:16
space on the inside of your tooth in the
00:04:19
1980s regular dentists started doing
00:04:22
root canals it was the beginning of root
00:04:26
canals prior to that very few people
00:04:28
ever did them and the people who did
00:04:30
were usually very expert and they used
00:04:32
silver I have one from when I was at
00:04:34
Dental School uh I put myself in as a
00:04:37
candidate for an examination this the
00:04:40
final exams and this senior actually
00:04:42
failed his exam because he drilled into
00:04:45
the inside of my tooth when that happens
00:04:48
automatically the tooth is going to die
00:04:51
they filled my tooth with silver and
00:04:53
it's still there and it's perfect but in
00:04:56
the 1980s silver was very expensive so
00:05:00
root canals were done with plastic and
00:05:03
very toxic materials and they didn't
00:05:06
have the equipment or the magnification
00:05:08
to know what they were doing and many of
00:05:11
these root canals were poorly done and
00:05:13
it gave root canals a very bad name
00:05:16
there have been so many advances in the
00:05:18
world of
00:05:19
Endodontics and today an endodontist
00:05:22
will be able to go in here do a really
00:05:25
nice cleanup of all the problems inside
00:05:29
the tooth
00:05:30
and then fill it with a really good
00:05:32
filling right to the very end of each
00:05:35
roote and then you can maintain that
00:05:38
tooth and here's the interesting part
00:05:41
this is what I want to teach you about
00:05:43
because it's not understood or well
00:05:45
known see many people will say oh take
00:05:48
out the tooth and put an implant in
00:05:50
there and I would advise you to think
00:05:52
very very carefully before you do that
00:05:54
if you can have a good root canal that
00:05:56
keeps your tooth safe it is dead yes but
00:06:00
it is no more dead than a fingernail
00:06:03
it's still attached to your body it's
00:06:06
attached in fact by All These Little
00:06:08
Fibers all the way around and these
00:06:12
fibers are called the perodontal
00:06:14
ligament and they go from the bone of
00:06:17
the jaw to the side wall of the root of
00:06:21
your tooth everywhere it's not just
00:06:23
two-dimensional think of this it's all
00:06:26
around the roots of all this of the root
00:06:29
roots that are part of this tooth they
00:06:31
often three roots for a Moler maybe even
00:06:34
four all these tiny hairs they are 100th
00:06:38
the width of the hair on your head so
00:06:41
they are tiny tiny little fibers and
00:06:44
they should not be forgotten because it
00:06:46
transpires that as we bite down on a
00:06:49
tooth and we stimulate by biting down
00:06:53
these little
00:06:54
hairs they have a connection to the
00:06:58
nerves in our brain and when the brain
00:07:02
feels the pressure our brain releases
00:07:06
something called orexin and orexin
00:07:09
actually is a a hormone type substance
00:07:12
that helps your thinking your decision
00:07:15
making it's a very important part of
00:07:16
your brain and so we don't want to give
00:07:21
up this ereen unless it's really
00:07:24
necessary this is why I would advise you
00:07:27
to really consider the value
00:07:30
of keeping a well
00:07:32
filled even though it may be dead it's
00:07:35
not like something it's not a a sliver
00:07:37
in your finger this is a
00:07:41
natural way to retain a tooth by getting
00:07:46
rid of the infection and just as you
00:07:49
would get rid of an infection in a
00:07:51
cavity you clean up the area and you put
00:07:54
in a filling the only difference here is
00:07:57
that the endodontist has cleaned up
00:07:59
further into the tooth and put in a
00:08:03
filling there's really very little
00:08:05
difference except that the nerves and
00:08:08
the blood supply were involved but there
00:08:10
were nerves and there were cells
00:08:12
involved in in your filling too uh in
00:08:16
the sense that Denton has cells that are
00:08:20
alive at least parts of cells that are
00:08:22
alive in the Denton so it really is a
00:08:26
filling that goes through the root and
00:08:28
this would allow you to keep this
00:08:30
perodontal ligament and its nervous
00:08:33
attachment as it were to the brain we
00:08:36
know that when people lose all their
00:08:39
teeth particularly women there are
00:08:41
studies to show it can affect cognitive
00:08:44
function so taking out teeth needs to be
00:08:47
done with great concern and thought the
00:08:52
alternative is to put in an implant and
00:08:55
one of the things that people don't
00:08:56
realize is that an implant does not have
00:08:59
the these fibers there is no perodontal
00:09:02
ligament for an implant when the an
00:09:05
implant is basically a screw similar to
00:09:08
the screw in your toolkit and it is
00:09:10
literally screwed into the bone and then
00:09:13
the fake tooth is screwed onto the top
00:09:15
of it it's pure mechanics there is none
00:09:18
of this beautiful natural attachment and
00:09:21
so you will not get any of these signals
00:09:23
sent to your brain and this is where we
00:09:26
need to be assessing this and with
00:09:28
today's big Push by a very lucrative
00:09:31
industry the implant industry I think a
00:09:34
lot of people are not necessarily
00:09:36
considering their options before you
00:09:38
have a tooth extracted think about your
00:09:41
parodontal ligament but then why have I
00:09:44
got all these products here because
00:09:45
keeping your parodontal ligament healthy
00:09:49
is what my complete mouth care system
00:09:51
really addresses it's one of the things
00:09:54
it keeps your whole mouth healthy but
00:09:56
this parodontal ligament is so important
00:09:59
I teach gum massage with the right kind
00:10:01
of toothbrushes I teach this three rinse
00:10:05
system specific mouthwash that I'm not
00:10:08
sponsored by any of these companies that
00:10:11
make these oral care products but I
00:10:14
recommend the use of them in a specific
00:10:16
order because it will prevent plaque
00:10:20
from forming that happens with xylol yes
00:10:23
this is my company zelis but other zotol
00:10:26
if you're in other parts of the world
00:10:28
can work just as well as well and then
00:10:30
the mouthwash system keeps all of the
00:10:34
mouth and around the perodontal area
00:10:37
healthy this is equally important if you
00:10:40
decide to have an implant and maybe even
00:10:43
more important because an implant
00:10:46
doesn't have the same kind of seal
00:10:49
around it that a normal tooth does an
00:10:52
implants are
00:10:54
notorious for developing implantitis
00:10:58
which would be inflammation instead of
00:11:00
these Little Fibers here inflammation
00:11:02
occurs all around the implant and then
00:11:04
it fails it is a very difficult delicate
00:11:10
connection to the liquids in your mouth
00:11:13
and the bacteria in your mouth and that
00:11:15
is why it's so important to have a
00:11:17
healthy mouth ideally before you have an
00:11:21
implant and if you already have one I
00:11:24
would recommend get moving on my
00:11:26
complete mouth care system massage your
00:11:28
gums use the sequence of products twice
00:11:31
a day and throughout the day have enough
00:11:33
salol to keep your mouth plaque free and
00:11:36
full of healthy mouth bacteria
